like dunder mifflin or whatever. i see these all the time but i don't get these. they aren't funny or clever or unique or anything. what do they say about you as a person when you wear them? why do you wear them?

otoh i have trouble justifying wearing almost any t-shirt that has words or images on it so maybe it's just me

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 26 July 2012 18:11 (eleven years ago) link

They say about the same as wearing a t-shirt with the name of the film/programme on, but usually have better logos.

well obv everyone makes choices about what they feel ok providing free advertising to but there's a big difference between a small independent band and a tv show on a major network

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 26 July 2012 18:15 (eleven years ago) link

it's a pretty small diff

Mr. Que, Thursday, 26 July 2012 18:15 (eleven years ago) link

well they basically say that the wearer is not funny or clever. but we're all unique aren't we

one has maybe a few hundred/thousand dollars to spend on marketing and the other has like millions but ok?

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 26 July 2012 18:17 (eleven years ago) link

if you buy a band t at a show, the band gets all the money; if you buy a tv show t shirt the money's probably mostly going to the network with very little of it going to the creative people behind the actual show ... i don't know seems like a big difference to me

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 26 July 2012 18:19 (eleven years ago) link

both are advertising tho

Mr. Que, Thursday, 26 July 2012 18:20 (eleven years ago) link

a better comparison would be wearing a tshirt with the geico gecko on it than wearing a band tshirt

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 26 July 2012 18:20 (eleven years ago) link

I just got over my aversion to wearing shirts with words or images on them this summer. On principle, I hadn't worn anything like that in about 10 years. Now I've got a couple, one of which is this logo:

http://www.theporkchopexpress.com/storage/post-images/ThePorkChopExpress.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1296929157314

Close enough to what you're thinking? People wear all kinds of goddamn t-shirts. I guess it would kinda suck to have a Dunder Mifflin one (is that show still on?).

i don't have a big point other than i think they are dumb and i don't understand the mentality of the people who wear them? not saying anything big about advertising, that was your deal, i think we are all behind the basic undergrad concept of "EVERYTHING IS ADVERTISING" this is an ilx thread, not a thesis

I always assumed those t-shirts with fictional companies from TV shows profited only the t-shirt vendor, since the companies were nonexistant and probably not trademarked. Like I don't think NBC thought to trademark Vandelay Industries, etc.

Tshirts can be more subcultural identifier than anything. Check out all the teefury/woot sites that make an entire industry out of such shirts. It works akin to having a pin/button for a band on your jacket. Cleverness doesn't necessarily enter into it.

For example, would I wear a Weyland-Yutani shirt? Yes. Would I think such a shirt is clever? No.

Copyright extends to a creative work and prohibits unlicensed "derivative works." Usually this includes stuff made based on characters from a fictional work, so I could see it also extending to fictional companies.

I don't have any of these but I did almost buy an Aperture Science t-shirt and I would never wear a t-shirt which actually said Portal or probably any other computer game title/logo.

Why? I confess it probably is partly because I am the kind of desperate corny motherfucker who wants to emblazon across their chest "I know an injoke! Plz be my friend if you get my injoke! ^___^ ". Like plain advertising a product would be distasteful but putting a little signifier out for anyone who already digs the product would be a little secret handshake and self-amusingly meta.

But mainly it is because I like the design better. Most of the fun I had in Portal 2 was looking at the company posters from the different eras rather than actually playing the game like a normal person.

well.... faux promotional t-shirts have been around for well over a decade now, almost two. you know, products designed to reference a business / product / event that doesn't actually exist. e.g. "mary's crab shack" or "aloha mike's tiki bar" or whatever. and yes, part of this was marketing 'cool' on a larger scale, selling a sort of thrift-store authenticity without having to deal with licensing or legal issues.

this sort of product is so commonplace, really, it's not 'cool' anymore. i don't think it's at all surprising that t-shirt sellers fill in references from fictional businesses. the aesthetic is the same, now it just has the added bonus of signalling the shows / movies you watch.

Why? Because I like the idea of someone seeing the shirt and thinking, "That is a thing I like, too!" and I like kinder, I like seeing other people wearing these shirts. So it's connecting with people with similar interests even if we don't actually talk to each other? somebody should make tshirts that just say "I LIKE HP LOVECRAFT" or "I like Star Trek", without any logos or images, just black text on a white shirt.

you used to see those LISTEN TO BLACK SABBATH shirts in the 90s quite a bit, they fitted this description

price lo matalan (DJ Mencap), Friday, 27 July 2012 14:18 (eleven years ago) link

I think the logo/inside joke shirts show off a deeper or more knowing kind of fandom. Like if you're wearing a Greendale Human Beings shirt then you're broadcasting your fandom to a smaller set of people than if you just wore a Community shirt. It's a bit like when I wear my shirt that says UYD: Seatbelts I know most people are not going to know what it means, but if someone says, "Seatbelts!" then there's an immediate connection.

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Friday, 27 July 2012 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

I dunno, I had my fair share of band t shirts when I was younger, but I guess at a certain point the very idea of "constructing your social identity through cultural references" began to seem fraught and no longer as desirable.

Trewster Dare (jaymc), Friday, 27 July 2012 16:12 (eleven years ago) link

I have two - for lack of a less-horrifying terms - 'mash up' kind of shirts, where I construct my social identity using multiple cultural references at once:

http://nerdapproved.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/beach-boys-black-flag-t-shirt.jpg

I suppose, for people who cringe at this kind of thing, the two-for-one shirts must be extra brutal.

I received this shirt as a gift because the gifter knew I was a fan of that book; it was an awkward moment. I wore it a couple times around the house. I get more IA re the kind of person who would MAKE AND SELL a shirt like this than the kind of person who would wear it, though.

In Little Otik, the father wears this plain white tshirt that says "U.S. BURGER" in red and blue. I don't know if that's a real/fake Czech burger chain or not, but I would totally wear it.
