huh

call all destroyer, Friday, 29 June 2012 22:45 (eleven years ago) link

5 best imo

iron giant
together
lilya
primer
rules of attraction

worst

rescue dawn
wristcutters
safe men
smiley face
layer cake

johnny crunch, Friday, 29 June 2012 22:45 (eleven years ago) link

How are we supposed to vote for them if we've never seen them. Answer me THAT, Entertainment Weekly.

emil.y, Friday, 29 June 2012 22:46 (eleven years ago) link

primer is great. 24 hr. party ppl is p. good. rescue dawn is good.

call all destroyer, Friday, 29 June 2012 22:46 (eleven years ago) link

Iron Giant.

Marwencol is pretty great too, though, ad probably much better fits this lists stated purpose.

to welcome jer.fairall, pie is served. (jer.fairall), Friday, 29 June 2012 22:52 (eleven years ago) link

I... don't like most of these films but Perfect Blue is pretty OTM

manditory fun. day (Ówen P.), Friday, 29 June 2012 22:52 (eleven years ago) link

Kinda hate Primer, actually. A dull, needlessly convoluted and dramatically inert rendering of potentially interesting material.

to welcome jer.fairall, pie is served. (jer.fairall), Friday, 29 June 2012 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

the magdalene sisters the best of these that i've seen

Mordy, Friday, 29 June 2012 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

i'm so allergic to entertainment weekly i might as well be a jonathan rosenbaum-level dick. or dr. morbius. peter travers *rolls eyes down the street, onto the freeway, six hours later my eyes are in las vegas at the mandalay bay buffet*

Misc. Carnivora (Matt P), Friday, 29 June 2012 22:55 (eleven years ago) link

I'd watch any of these again:

24 hour party people
cold comfort farm
eve's bayou
ghost dog
the iron giant
marwencal
the ref
the rules of attraction

EZ Snappin, Friday, 29 June 2012 22:59 (eleven years ago) link

of the ones i've seen they're 50/50 great/shitty.

da croupier, Friday, 29 June 2012 23:00 (eleven years ago) link

murderball was 50/50 great/shitty in the same movie.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 29 June 2012 23:00 (eleven years ago) link

i liked rules of attraction in college but when i tried to watch it again recently it was reaaaall rough

da croupier, Friday, 29 June 2012 23:01 (eleven years ago) link

faves are probably 24 hour party people, DIG!, The Ref and maybe wendy and lucy

da croupier, Friday, 29 June 2012 23:03 (eleven years ago) link

to their credit, the half of the movies I haven't seen I do feel like I should

da croupier, Friday, 29 June 2012 23:04 (eleven years ago) link

even if i know i'll hate half

da croupier, Friday, 29 June 2012 23:04 (eleven years ago) link

Lilya 4-Ever is one of my favourite films. Pick of the rest, Perfect Blue and
Together.

Temporarily Famous In The Czech Republic (ShariVari), Friday, 29 June 2012 23:05 (eleven years ago) link

I did really enjoy Rare Exports, out of the ones that haven't been repped for so far.

emil.y, Friday, 29 June 2012 23:09 (eleven years ago) link

I am always confused by The Iron Giant, because it's from 1999, but I remember a film *just like it* from when I was a little kid.

emil.y, Friday, 29 June 2012 23:10 (eleven years ago) link

i also like 'fish tank' quite a bit

johnny crunch, Friday, 29 June 2012 23:11 (eleven years ago) link

One of these three:

enter the void (2009)
ghost dog: the way of the samurai (1999)
the iron giant (1999)

Of the ones I don't like, I think Rescue Dawn is right up there with the worst.

old people are made of poop (Eric H.), Friday, 29 June 2012 23:29 (eleven years ago) link

murderball was 50/50 great/shitty in the same movie.

Feel that way about Idiocracy.

lag∞n, Friday, 29 June 2012 23:44 (eleven years ago) link

Idiocracy was racist even when it wasn't racist. But Fuddruckers --> Buttfuckers is XD

old people are made of poop (Eric H.), Saturday, 30 June 2012 00:47 (eleven years ago) link

Century of the Self was pretty great, surprised to see it on the list actually

Chris S, Saturday, 30 June 2012 00:58 (eleven years ago) link

why this is a list of good movies

lag∞n, Saturday, 30 June 2012 01:01 (eleven years ago) link

just the whole anti-consumerism/anti-marketing theme not really being your usual entertainment weekly material

Chris S, Saturday, 30 June 2012 01:11 (eleven years ago) link

Marwencol, Memories of Murder, Rescue Daw, Wendy and Lucy all great, most of the rest is hopelessly random. Went for Marwencol.

Simon H., Saturday, 30 June 2012 01:44 (eleven years ago) link

ah shit, didn't see Wendy and Lucy on there. gave a vote to Ghost Dog instead. dogs, man.

I've seen and liked

24 hr party people
backbeat
bubba ho-tep
cold comfort farm
the daytrippers
DIG!
next stop wonderland
murderball
the ref
rules of attraction
walking and talking

Voting 24 hr pp.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Saturday, 30 June 2012 02:26 (eleven years ago) link

Like some others, the paradoxical nature of this poll jumped out at me...Wendy and Lisa, followed by The Daytrippers. I saw The Rules of Attraction a few weeks ago. Loved the "Colours" sequence, liked it on the whole, found parts a little flashy. Roger Avary spoke before and after. God, does he ramble.

clemenza, Saturday, 30 June 2012 02:34 (eleven years ago) link

Wendy and Lucy--and I was concentrating on not making that very mistake.

clemenza, Saturday, 30 June 2012 02:36 (eleven years ago) link

That would be a very different movie.

Electro-Shock Rory (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 30 June 2012 04:21 (eleven years ago) link

Decided to go with Cold Comfort Farm because I saw something nasty in the wood shed.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 30 June 2012 04:54 (eleven years ago) link

disowning all ilxors who don't vote Ghost Dog

mh, Saturday, 30 June 2012 04:57 (eleven years ago) link

The Iron Giant

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 30 June 2012 05:27 (eleven years ago) link

I like a bunch of these, but will vote George Washington out of nostalgia for a time when David Gordon Green was going to be an important and interesting dude.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 30 June 2012 11:42 (eleven years ago) link

And special shout-out to Box of Moonlight for being filmed in/around Knoxville.

memories of murder.

me so fat (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 30 June 2012 12:43 (eleven years ago) link

then probably 24 hr pp, ghost dog, iron giant, and perfect blue.

me so fat (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 30 June 2012 12:45 (eleven years ago) link

torn between 'the daytrippers' and 'together'

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Saturday, 30 June 2012 12:53 (eleven years ago) link

looooove Walking and Talking, which does what the title says.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 30 June 2012 12:58 (eleven years ago) link

iron giant won my vote, though i strongly considered ghost dog, 24 hour party people and marwencol.

kurwa mać (Polish for "long life") (Eisbaer), Saturday, 30 June 2012 13:44 (eleven years ago) link

Hate a few of those, but these are all good:

Iron Giant
Devil's Playground
Fly Away Home
Together
Orphanage
Eve's Bayou
Layer Cake
Rescue Dawn
24 Hour Party People
Rare Exports
Memories of Murder
Moon

Idiocracy is sort of brilliant despite being messed with by the studio disaster.

Anyway, what a stupid random EW list.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 30 June 2012 13:55 (eleven years ago) link

Wait is Rules of Attraction that awful Brett Easton Ellis thing? That was awful.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Saturday, 30 June 2012 14:05 (eleven years ago) link

Backbeat haha.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Saturday, 30 June 2012 14:05 (eleven years ago) link

Some good movies on this list (lots and lots of Sam Rockwell hah). Memories of Murder probably the best of the bunch, but there is a bunch of stuff I wouldn't have any issue with watching again.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Saturday, 30 June 2012 14:09 (eleven years ago) link

i don't keep up w/ box-office receipts and shit, but i always kind of thought that layer cake and moon did OK when they were in the cinemas or as rentals. they didn't pull down harry potter-type money or get twilight levels of hype, but neither are they one of those movies that no-one but hard-core film nerds have ever heard of.

kurwa mać (Polish for "long life") (Eisbaer), Saturday, 30 June 2012 14:17 (eleven years ago) link

It's weird to me that Lilya-4-Ever made the list, but 'Show Me Love' didn't, and I think that is 10 times over the best film.

uncondensed milky way (remy bean), Saturday, 30 June 2012 14:19 (eleven years ago) link

Faith in Humanity: Restored (dayo), Saturday, 30 June 2012 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

Is bubba ho-tep actually any good? It's always seemed lol Bruce Campbl as Elvis to me.

uncondensed milky way (remy bean), Saturday, 30 June 2012 14:24 (eleven years ago) link

That's pretty much what it is, but that's not really a bad thing.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Saturday, 30 June 2012 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

Rules of attraction is great.

Bubba ho-tep is fun, yeah.

i never saw lilya 4-ever cuz i heard there was a scene in it that would make me cry

george washington is good, primer too

lag∞n, Saturday, 30 June 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

I liked Lilya 4-Ever but the end kind of ruined it for me, to be honest. Don't want to discuss it too much, because spoilers.

emil.y, Saturday, 30 June 2012 14:59 (eleven years ago) link

i never saw lilya 4-ever cuz i heard there was a scene in it that would make me cry

The whole thing will make you cry. A number of people had to be physically helped from the cinema when i saw it. It's horrific but enormously powerful. It's also completely different to Fucking Amal.

Temporarily Famous In The Czech Republic (ShariVari), Saturday, 30 June 2012 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

I saw Ghost Dog in France. I found a screening with English subtitles, and it turns out I pick the one movie that happened to have a funny scene half in French, which of course was not subtitled.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 30 June 2012 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

chuck and buck has not aged well imo

Grimy Little Pimp (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 30 June 2012 16:08 (eleven years ago) link

but like is Iron Giant even in this discussion? If you're the type of person who would be interested in an article like this Iron Giant is practically Star Wars

two family house!! i loved that movie when it came out. it really spoke to me. michael rispoli's such an underrated actor. i actually had a dream with him in it a few weeks ago - i told him he was really underrated and he thanked me and invited me to eat a spaghetti dinner with his family, which i accepted

Black_vegeta (Hungry4Ass), Saturday, 30 June 2012 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

Lilja 4-ever was amazing to me when it came out too but i find it really corny now.

You could probably go on forever suggesting omissions/additions, so I'll limit myself to one: The Heart of the Game, which according to IMDB had taken in $444,687 a few months after release. So some people did see it--maybe 45,000?

primer ahead of moon ahead of 24 party people

Ну, там твое место, там сабе будь! (darraghmac), Saturday, 30 June 2012 19:41 (eleven years ago) link

top 5:

ghost dog: the way of the samurai (1999)
memories of murder (2005)
primer (2004)
the ref (1994)
together (2000)

omar little, Saturday, 30 June 2012 20:29 (eleven years ago) link

finally! this is why i love ilx! more or less consensus on the top 5 or so, of which i know of and agree on 3 of, the other 2 i've never even heard of and am downl<<<<<purchasing as i type this. also, i get to be contrarian and say that idiocracy is *easily* in my top 5, along with ghost dog, 24 hour party people, moon, and... fuck it. i'll just stop at 4. bubba ho tep was a perfectly fine evening's entertainment, but not really worthy of entering a list.

idiocracy was not meant to be taken seriously, obviously. and i'm sorry but anyone who thinks it's racist is clearly a) overthinking shit and b) too slow/kneejerk to realize that president camacho is clearly the smartest person in the movie if you pay any attention whatsoever

Lloyd: You know what I'm going to get you next Christmas, Mom? A big wooden cross, so that every time you feel unappreciated for your sacrifices, you can climb on up and nail yourself to it.

In hindsight, that's a pretty easy joke but I still love the delivery of it. One big problem i had with American Beauty is that I thought Kevin Spacey had already done that downtrodden cuckold meltdown thing so much better in The Ref (and Judy Davis >> Annette Bening).

Crackle Box, Monday, 2 July 2012 15:22 (eleven years ago) link

Have seen...
24 hour party people (2002): Verrrry good.
backbeat (1994): Meh at the time and can't imagine it's aged well.
bubba ho-tep (2002): I liked it, in spite of English Major Syndrome striking while watching.
cold comfort farm (1995): Liked it a lot, but it was only marginally hipper than the average "Masterpiece Theatre" production.
the daytrippers (1996): I saw it, and that's about all I remember.
fish tank (2010): A solid production; hope the director does more.
ive loved you so long (2008): The film that asks the question "What's French for soap opera/women's picture?"
last night (2010): A pretty piece of plutography, and that's the ONLY thing I can say in its favor.
layer cake (2005): On the one hand, a preview of Craig's Bond. OTOH, getting killed over Sienna Miller? Weak.
moon (2009): Uhhhh....
next stop wonderland (1998): Uhhhh....

i like slash and i vote (j.lu), Monday, 2 July 2012 17:03 (eleven years ago) link

Also, the film soundtrack uses a Jimmy Lyons/Jeanne Lee/Andrew Cyrille track brilliantly. By a wide margin, the most surprising choice I've ever heard on a movie soundtrack.

Enjoyed all of these:

24 hour party people (2002)
backbeat (1994)
the century of self (2005)
chuck & buck (2000)
DIG! (2004)
fish tank (2010)
ghost dog: the way of the samurai (1999)
idiocracy (2006)
the iron giant (1999)
moon (2009)
together (2000)
walking and talking (1996)
wristcutters: a love story (2006)

24 Hour vs DIG! vs Fish Tank vs Together

Get wolves (DL), Monday, 2 July 2012 17:12 (eleven years ago) link

Have seen:

chuck & buck (2000)
Haven't seen it since it was new. Posted above that I remember it being interesting but so visually ugly as to be distracting. Somehow, I wholly believe whoever it was who posted above that it hasn't aged well.

devil's playground (2002)
This is the Amish kids documentary, right. If so, eh.

fish tank (2010)
Liked this, but wouldn't consider it one of the most essential obscure films made in the last 20 years.

happy accidents (2000)
Another one I haven't seen since it was new, but I remember liking it a lot. Sorta like Donnie Darko with adults.

idiocracy (2006)
Discussed above. Gets in some good satirical digs in its first 2/3 but then succumbs to convention. Ends up defending what it purports to hate.

the iron giant (1999)
My fave movie on the list that I've seen. Still not sure how obscure it is, though.

marwencol (2010)
Would've been my #2 choice. Fascinating, sympathetic and odd. The ending feels strangely triumphant.

moon (2009)
Liked, not loved, but still. The problem with doing a riff on 2001 is that its not, in the end, 2001. Spacey as HAL is genius casting, though.

next stop wonderland (1998)
Saw it when it was first out and remember it being...cute.

prime (2005)
I said it before and I'll say it again...WTF?

primer (2004)
Talked about it above. Way overrated. Thinks its too good to be entertaining; my least favourite kind of genre film.

the ref (1994)
Haven't seen it in years, but funny. Remembering that this was pitched as Denis Leary's big screen vehicle, its kind of amazing the cast they snagged for this film.

rescue dawn (2007)
A storm knocked out the power halfway through the screening of this that I attended and we all had to get our money refunded. Movie was gone less than a week later and I didn't even get to see Christian Bale eat bugs (remember Herzog talking about this on NPR; he reasoned Bale into it by telling him bugs were full of protean and, you know, you Hollywood guys are all into that healthy stuff. Do I even need to tell you how much I love this man?). Was liking but not loving it up to that point, but haven't yet gone back to watch the rest. Have seen Little Dieter Needs To Fly, though, so any suspense is already kind of ruined, if that is the point.

the rules of attraction (2002)
Surprisingly good for a movie primarily hyped, at the time, as Dawson does drugs and has promiscuous bi-sex. Nasty and funny and has a great soundtrack.

together (2000)
Saw it when new, liked it, but it apparently made too little of an impression at the time for me to remember much about it now. Would watch again if I ever came across it.

walking and talking (1996)
I like Holofcener, but--if you leave Friends With Money out of her filmography--I think she kept getting better as she went on. This is good, but Lovely & Amazing and Please Give are stronger.

Wendy and Lucy (2008), Fly Away Home (1996), and Memories of Murder (2005) are all great. DIG! (2004) is very good.

The Daytrippers (1996) and Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999) are indie-entertainment bedrock, though I barely remember a moment. Same with 24 Hour Party People (2002).

I'm fond of what little I remember from Idiocracy (2006). The Ref (1994) I avoided for so long, but it turned out to be okay.

Moon (2009) and Primer (2004) are eminently rentable low-budget sci-fi, a small but honorable category.

Backbeat (1994) is worth a look for Beatles fans. Layer Cake (2005) is a passable but routine Daniel Craig gangster picture.

I either hated or couldn't make it through Happy Accidents (2000), Broken English (2007), Walking and Talking (1996), Next Stop Wonderland (1998), and Last Night (2010).

Of the couple dozen I haven't seen, I'd bet on the docs and avoid the relationship comedies, but I have nothing against good romcom on principle--is Prime bad or what?

george washington (2000)
- i remember when "directed by david gordon green" was a promising credit

ghost dog: the way of the samurai (1999)

I'll never understand the love that people have for The Incredibles. It's a fine, fun movie but it doesn't even come close to The Iron Giant. Nothing Brad Bird's done since has

Number None, Thursday, 5 July 2012 08:59 (eleven years ago) link

well, certainly not MI4 anyway. i dunno, they all have their merits, but i though iron giant was... a little too obvious? the humor wasn't as sophisticated? just a little slower, not as polished as, say, ratatouille?

iron giant is probably "deeper" than the pixar flicks, i'll give you that. also, a+ for bambi reference

anyway, also.... um, look, this is probably gonna just devolve into namecalling and snark, but... why is idiocracy racist? the black dude is president, he's smarter than every other character in a world full of straight up stupid characters (including the only middlingly dumb lead), he saves the day... i mean, ok, there's some pimpology going on and stuff, but given that basically the whole movie is making fun of a) white trash idjuts and b) the dorky white upper middle class dorks they outbreed off the face of the earth.... i just don't see it.

but, i'm open to hearing why i might be wrong, so: please explain the racism in idiocracy.

some dude otm. the only real social difference between this "stupid" future and our own present day is the heavy presence of hispanic names and faces at every level of society. i just don't understand why judge thought this was necessary or funny.

contenderizer, Thursday, 5 July 2012 15:03 (eleven years ago) link

ok, i see this has been discussed to death by two camps on another thread. i'll call it a tie - i get what the racist camp saying, but i don't really see mike judge as some sort of kkk sympathizer or anything. comedy, sometimes it pushes buttons i guess. i still think it was funny as hell - all the awesome quotes on the other thread made me want to watch it again

messiahwannabe, Thursday, 5 July 2012 15:58 (eleven years ago) link

i mean i can give him the benefit of the doubt that being from Texas he just thought of the ubiquity of hispanic names as the norm and factored in that it's a growing population in general, but not putting two and two together how that would come across in a movie about society getting dumber would be pretty naive/wreckless

this and the lack of any acknowledgement of class (who designs these machines for idiots?), plus having a lead be a squirming luke wilson who just frowns at everything undercut the occasional good bit (like dr. justin long). that he followed this film with The Goode Family and a movie about the misery of owning a factory full of lazy workers hasn't made me want to be any kinder to it.

i feel like there is another movie with an "emigrating to western europe" plot that was in some ways similar, but i'm forgetting ... i recall a memorable sequence where they were arguing in a trailer park by the freeway and everything was beige or this nasty drizzly grey daylight color, somewhere like belgium or the netherlands.

this and the lack of any acknowledgement of class (who designs these machines for idiots?)

computers designed and manufactured in days of yore, i think? ones that break easily and no one can fix? not sure it's important to the enjoyment of the film, i think it's pretty clear from the get go one has to suspend a bit of disbelief here. "just repeat to yourself it's just a show, i should really just relax" etc etc

on the other hand, people on lix are starting to quote messages in their responses! this is excellent, i've been lobbying for this for years! it almost makes me want to agree with you!

One thing I will give 24 Hour Party People is that, as I recall, it's one of the few movies besides Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me that really captures what a loud club is like. The sound was amazing, but also the atmosphere, everything. I remember feeling unsatisfied with the ending, but maybe that's part of music history so suffer.

DIG! was an interesting movie but i'd have liked it better if i liked the bands at *all*. all that talk about crazy dude's staggering genius and i'm thinking "it's just a mediocre indie take on 60's kitch, why does anybody even care!?!?" i remember being completely underwhelmed with them in the 90's or whenever they came out as well but i suppose they must have had their fans. still, interesting enough flick.

so, what should i watch next? i've now seen (in order of most enjoyment):
