Cypress Hill, Tha Dogg Pound, The Egyptian Lover, Kid Frost, King T, Mellow Man Ace, Public Enemy, Sir Jinx are getting together to play a FREE show for a cause. "Occupy Skid Row" has been put together by Skid Row activist General Jeff and Chuck D going down on Sunday, Jan. 15 on Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles from 1:30pm - 5:30pm according to AllHipHop.com.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

Also I know there were vague plans for something this weekend but I'll have to bow out; my good friend Y has just come home from major heart surgery and Ms. S and I, being her nearest neighbors, are pitching in to help her and husband as we can.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 January 2012 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

the vague plans are so vague it's likely not gonna happen. it's so hard to get people together in one place in los angeles! especially with all these damn grownup responsibilities. i have such a love/hate relationship with this town.

I would love to come back, but gf is in school here for 6+ years more, and I can't afford a vacatino right now. maybe this summer. i was really happy for the first four years i lived there; only the last one sucked

i want to come back and visit. i love l a. my bf thinks it's all freeways and hollywood and wants to move to portland which is just not an actual city imo.

i've had a couple friends from nyc come out here and visit me and i think they all had that same initial characterization of "ehh you have to drive all the time and LA ppl are super obnoxious." but i'm 95% certain everyone i've hosted here has had a really good time. (the trick = stuffing people with all the amazing food options here)

donna rouge, Friday, 13 January 2012 00:38 (twelve years ago) link

also it helps to remind them that people in nyc are pretty horrible in their own ways. (he says with love)

donna rouge, Friday, 13 January 2012 00:40 (twelve years ago) link

everybody's horrible everywhere.

my copy has boobs (get bent), Friday, 13 January 2012 01:08 (twelve years ago) link

I've only lived here for a few years but it doesn't really strike me as a city you should really visit

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 13 January 2012 01:13 (twelve years ago) link

really

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 13 January 2012 01:13 (twelve years ago) link

it's intimidating. you have to have good organizational and navigational skill. and not try to do the whole area at once -- pick a part of town and stay with it, save the stuff that's 20 miles away for another visit or another time.

my copy has boobs (get bent), Friday, 13 January 2012 01:17 (twelve years ago) link

i love love LOVE los angeles!!!! tbh i was totally prepared to hate it, but i was blown away by my first visit. probably helps that every time i visit, i am in the company of someone who lived there for almost 10 yrs and loves the shit out of it.

just1n3, Friday, 13 January 2012 01:19 (twelve years ago) link

i'm a corny hipster fuck but to me northeast l.a. (and the upper hollywood/los feliz/franklin hills area just west of it) is some really great natural/architectural beauty and i'd take tourist friends there if i wanted l.a. to blow them away. the view from the gold line around mt. washington is like woah.

my copy has boobs (get bent), Friday, 13 January 2012 01:25 (twelve years ago) link

l.a. takes awhile to love, i know few people who came here and loved it right away (and most of them burned out on it kinda quickly.) i have a love/hate relationship w/it myself, maybe b/c i lived in nyc and chicago and miss them both.

omar little, Friday, 13 January 2012 01:31 (twelve years ago) link

i took 6 months to love it, but i never looked back. boston is great and all, but food is too expensive and there's not enough of it that's good.

rocognise gnome (remy bean), Friday, 13 January 2012 01:34 (twelve years ago) link

the "car culture" part (along with the sheer sprawling size of the place) is the only real barrier to true love. it's not just a pain in the ass, it's cognitive dissonance -- i come from a really different place.

my copy has boobs (get bent), Friday, 13 January 2012 01:48 (twelve years ago) link

the traffic has gotten markedly worse since when i moved here in 1999(!), slowly but in a retrospectively alarming fashion.

omar little, Friday, 13 January 2012 02:16 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah it's easily reaching tipping points at many spots. At a certain point freeway expansion won't cut it and you'll either see people going "Okay, fine, mass transit for real" or sheer insanity on top of the already present cognitive dissonance. Speaking especially of OC here.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 January 2012 02:20 (twelve years ago) link

it used to be "oh nice i'm leaving work at 1 PM, no traffic" and now that's not the case. 1 HR from santa monica to silver lake. not to mention random horrible traffic jams on weeknights at 11 PM and almost constant jams on the freeways on weekend afternoons.

omar little, Friday, 13 January 2012 02:22 (twelve years ago) link

fuck 1am traffic jams

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 13 January 2012 02:25 (twelve years ago) link

On the plus side, even with all these extra cars the air is much cleaner than it used to be.

nickn, Friday, 13 January 2012 02:41 (twelve years ago) link

my own experience is that i lived here for a month on an internship in 2009 (first time ever in LA) and then moved back 'permanently' last september. during that time in between, finishing up school in nyc and then moving back home for a spell, i honestly thought about one day moving back to LA rather often. and then i did! and i am mostly very glad i did. i still miss things about nyc (mostly my friends who are still there) but the idea of moving back there at this point seems totally unreal to me.

I really liked the food at Palate, and actually thought it was kind of awesome that it was on Auto Row in Glendale. Pretty old, bourgie crowd though.

Speaking of which - we have this new-ish Italian place Maximiliano in Highland Park and it seems to attract the strangest people. I do see Marc Maron there a lot, though. It is Andre Guerrero (Oinkster) and the food is good, a little too homestyle at times but tasty. But the people are WEIRD.

It's pretty good ramen if you don't want to torture yourself. Buncha friends and a couple people around me all did the challenge last time I was there and ended up incapacitated or throwing up, coming back out of the restroom, and blear-eyed-ly shouting "it hurts more coming back up than going down"

Alt Proj looking good:

http://www.cinefamily.org/films/alternative-projections-experimental-film-in-los-angeles-1945-1980/

I can report that I found Mayura to be acceptable but unremarkable Indian food. I might go if it was closer and I had a craving, but driving to Culver City for that? No way.

Also, I finally saw Pina and it was good. I reckon I'd be a good German dancer. Also it was my first "twenty-first century" 3D movie! I enjoyed that.

When I am driving along the 110 thru Highland Park into South Pasadena, I can see people running and cycling along the bed of the Arroyo Seco. I wanna ride my bike down there, does anyone know how/where you get in???

Also - any good recs. bike routes in Northeast/Eastside LA would be most welcome.

LOS ANGELES (January 18, 2012) - Coming up next week, SCI-Arc hosts the Los Angeles showing of the Kaleidoscope of Pacific Standard Time (K-PST)’s RE:COMPOSITION, a two-city thematic program of four new performances dedicated to the liberating spirit of California-native John Cage, in honor of his centenary in 2012.

Conceived and produced by independent curator Julie Lazar, RE:COMPOSITION considers how current compositional practices are enabling artists in a variety of disciplines to re-conceive and reconstitute aspects of their art production.

RE:COMPOSITION will run in Los Angeles for two nights only, with the same program presented on Friday, Jan 27 and Saturday, Jan 28 from 8-10pm.

this is happening...

The Danish collective SUPERFLEX built a life-size McDonald's replica, then flooded it to foreshadow capitalism's doom for the 21-minute film it made in 2009. The collective's new exhibition, right across from LACMA at 1301 PE, has a much subtler feel than the McDonald's flood, with framed posters downstairs and tastefully designed black "safety" lamps hung upstairs. But the quiet, slow-moving film that plays out on an upstairs wall is actually fairly aggressive. Entitled Modern Times, Forever -- at 240 hours long, it's the longest film ever made, the collective claims -- it simulates the demolition of Stora Enso, a massive modernist office building in Helsinki. Originally, the film played for its 10-day duration on the street in front of its subject, so you could see modernism persisting and disintegrating at the same time. 6150 Wilshire Blvd.; through March 3. Since the mid 1990s, Palms has seen an upturn in its fortunes, with the revival of Culver City's adjacent downtown adding new life to the area. The district's diversity, affordability, and central location have made it an appealing center for young professionals seeking alternatives to traffic-choked Westwood and Santa Monica, but still wanting to live in a diverse urban setting in a neighborhood relatively close to the beach.

buzza, Sunday, 5 February 2012 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

West LA seems like all "hipsters" to me whenever I go, just that weird dayglo classically "LA" kind of hipster. But I don't go there enough to have much opinion. I go for movie theater or beach or to buy clothes. I would go more if I could ride metro, for sure.

I think of "I don't go west of Fairfax" as "I don't go South of Embankment".

this is happening:

http://welcometolace.org/exhibitions/view/staalplaat-soundsystem/

LACE will host Dutch sound artist collective Staalplaat Soundsystem for a 10 day residency 20 Feb. – 1 March 2012. Within the current mood of worshipping the latest technology in media art, Staalplaat Soundsystem provides a breath of fresh air, reminding us of the 100-year tradition of noise-making machines, in which “mad” inventors and various kinds of artists operating in the margins of the art world meet. During their residency Staalplaat members Geert-Jan Hobijn and Carlo Crovato will construct a site specific, interactive sound installation that will also serve as the focal point for a participatory sound performance. They will also lead a two-day youth workshop, culminating in a concert.

Using “everyday electronic junk” scavenged from thrift stores and donations, Hobijn and Crovato will fashion new “sound machines” that will be controllable by the audience via smartphones. As the residency proceeds the artists will create and add more machines to an ever-growing installation in LACE’s main gallery space. In the final phase of the residency they will re-locate the installation to the storefront space and set it up so that LACE visitors and the general public can conduct the “orchestra” via their mobile phone both inside and outside from the Walk of Fame.

ABOUT STAALPLAAT SOUNDSYSTEM

Since its inception in 2000, Staalplaat Soundsystem has started creating a multitude of “machine installations” using all manner of consumer electronics, such as a dozen floor polishers (Sweet Sissy and the Ballroom Hiss), and Avantilator, a composition for one hundred electric office fans. At the heart of this work is a low-tech philosophy: to make installations appear simple, revealing rather than concealing how they are made.

Artists participating in the LACE residency include Staalplaat Soundsystem founder Geert-Jan Hobijn and Carlo Crovato. On a gentler note to the LACE show, Machine Project is having an infantcore show Saturday.

What?

After our friend Sally brought her baby Otto to play Nate Page’s Storefront Plaza we realized that we had a perfect baby vivarium on our hands, and if we were going to invite a bunch of babies to crawl around for an afternoon, why not put them to work as variables in a algorithmic sound composition?

How does that work?

Scott Cazan has written some software for the occasion that uses a camera and a computer to track the movement of the babies and convert that information into different sounds.

Hit up an In-n-Out burger, drove around Hollywood, stopped by an old friend from Ann Arbor's vintage guitar & record shop over in Chinatown, wandering thru the mercado by there, had french dip at Philippes, and took a lot of photos.

"marvellously inoffensive" (Eazy), Monday, 12 March 2012 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

The 1914 flood caused $10 million in damages throughout the developing basin and brought a public outcry for action to address the recurrent flooding problems. The following year, the Los Angeles County Flood Control District was formed. Early flood control efforts included some channelization and the need for reservoirs. Taxpayers approved bond issues in 1917 and 1924 to build the initial major dams. However, taxpayers were not willing to provide enough funds for substantial infrastructure downstream of the dams. After two more destructive floods in the 1930s, Federal assistance was requested and the Army Corps of Engineers took a lead role in channelizing the River. Channelization began in 1938, and by 1960, the project was completed to form a fifty-one mile engineered waterway.

Before channelization of the River, flood control projects and utilization of the River as a source of water changed the system of streams, wetlands, and swamps of the natural lands. Channelization provided flood control for the increasingly developed region and a consistent path for the River course. Today, the banks of the River are almost fully lined along its entire length. Only three portions of the channel bottom remain unpaved: through the Sepulveda Flood Control Basin in the San Fernando Valley, near Griffith Park through Elysian Valley where ground water levels prevent it from being paved, and at the River estuary in Long Beach where the River empties into the Pacific Ocean.

downtown Artwalk devolving into a cops vs Occupy L.A. near-riot right now at 5th and Spring, with Occupy deciding to step in after past Artwalks where people were busted for writing on the sidewalks in chalk. Which is stupid but this feels like an RIP artwalk event.

The cop cars had their doors open and like 5-6 cops were standing behind the doors like a barricade, all of them w/ their gun drawn, it was a p crazy thing for me to pass, I've seen some police shit but like, never a line of cops w/ guns out

my decidedly less exciting going-out-in-LA report tonight: there was an electrical outage near the crazy five-way intersection at sunset/hollywood/hillhurst/virgil earlier. i was gonna meet up with friends at el chavo but the power was out and they were only serving beer and shots because the freezer wasn't working (so no ice). power's back on now but the intersection's traffic lights are still just blinking red so it's a bit of a free-for-all around there atm

My sis is likely moving to l.a. to take a job working downtown. She is considering living (for ease of commute) in silver lake, Los Feliz, or downtown. Any suggestions for her? Part of her wants to live in a little house in silver lake, but another part of her wants to live in a loft downtown (so she can be close to work).

She's moving from San Francisco, where she has a beautiful old Victorian apartment with lots of character and built-ins. Is there anywhere in l.a. where she could find an apartment like that?

Virginia Plain, Sunday, 26 August 2012 00:06 (eleven years ago) link

she's not going to find victorians in l.a., but she should look at silver lake or los feliz for craftsman-style bungalows.

choom gangnam style (get bent), Sunday, 26 August 2012 00:09 (eleven years ago) link

downtown is great, but it's close to skid row and has a very large homeless presence -- a lot of drugs and mental illness. not the safest place for a woman to be alone after dark.

Angelino Heights is right next to downtown and has Victorians but it's very small and more houses than rentals but I feel I have seen a few apartment listings. You would need a car imo because it is sort of isolated.

buzza, Sunday, 26 August 2012 01:32 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks for the advice ... I most see her in a little house in silver lake or Los Feliz, but she seems to think that living downtown for a year while getting the lay of the land might be a good idea. Is echo park safe(r) than downtown? She seems to think it might be a bit dicey?

If it was up to me, I think I would live in an old 1920s era Spanish/Moorish-style apartment court in Hollywood. You know, like, the Garden of Allah.

Virginia Plain, Sunday, 26 August 2012 02:09 (eleven years ago) link

How about Mt. Washington/Lincoln Heights/South Pasadena area? Basically anything along the Gold LIne that makes her commute easier.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 26 August 2012 02:55 (eleven years ago) link

Of course the big question here is how much is she willing to spend on rent.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 26 August 2012 02:55 (eleven years ago) link

I wouldn't say echo park is less safe than downtown sorta varies block to block in both areas though the skid row area is truly scary

buzza, Sunday, 26 August 2012 04:34 (eleven years ago) link

silverlake los feliz and downtown aren't far enough from one another where it'll make a difference living in one over the other for the first year, so she should just take whatever place she likes the most, and considering what she's willing to pay on rent she'll have a lot of choices. I mean downtown imo has completely changed, even within the last 6 months, so like, just dont bring a tent and put it up in skid row and you'll be fine

I don't know Tam O' Shanters. I'm sure I've said this before but I like Musso, Bounty, Taix, Colombo's for old school. I also like drinking at the Prince in K-town, maybe the weirdest bar in LA. I got - True Story Of Abner Jay-Abner Jay, Pure Phase-Spiritualized (!), KA-Excepter new and Get Yer Ya Yas Out -Stones, Jammin With Edward, Almost Blue-Elvis Costello, Flat Earth - Thomas Dolby used. The used ones were all $2-4 and in great condition. It was great. They also had that Michael Chapman thing on Light In The Attic which I walked around with sweaty-palmed for about 20 mins until I talked myself into putting it down. It probably still has my sweat on it, but it was shrinkwrapped.

Oh and Calvin was like 2 hours late so I didn't hang around and went to see Killer Joe instead, which was good.

This really depends on where she falls along the hipster - bourgie spectrum. It sounds like she has the means to pick and choose from any of the better options. Here are my suggestions:

- Silverlake - this area is best for bourgie hipsters. Lots of bars, some good restaurants. Very pleasant
- Fairfax - best for young people in the industry or those with less concern about being a hipster (consciously or not). Lots of amazing restaurants
- Echo Park - close to Silverlake but cheaper and still with a slight edge
- Los Feliz - close to Silverlake but mellower and somewhat more upscale.
- Atwater, Mt Washington, Highland Park, Pasadena - These are mostly for married couples and families - lower middle class to upper middle class to straight up rich in certain parts.
- Downtown - is still a weird place. There are things to do, but it still doesn't seem like a neighborhood - just kind of random people. Some nice places, but noisy during the week and desolate on the weekends. I used to live there and enjoyed it but found it isolating (sometimes a good thing, sometimes not).
- Santa Monica, Venice - if you're into the beach.
- Beverly Hills, West Hollywood - these places are expensive but can be fun if you're not hipster at all.
- Culver City - is incredibly central, but is mainly for families.
- there's a whole medium density west side desert which has lots of apartments which is fine if you have a nice apartment, but is never really here nor there.

I'd say that the commute to downtown in a car is pretty easy from any of these places. except for the far west side and Santa Monica/Venice.

yes!!! the reality of LA was so different to my imagining of it. i've never spent more than a couple days at a time in the city, mostly eaten up by visiting friends/specific events, would love to have a week of just exploring. a friend of mine is in the running for an arts grant, and if she wins it i'll be spending a week in LA some time after the new year, helping her sew up a bunch of books and hopefully doing some actual exploring.

i do like the kitchen @ fountain and sunset. you know what's good albeit in echo park is 'the park'. dusty's is really good. local is as well, plus vv friendly service. some people like the mustard seed cafe, some do not, i'm in-between leaning towards the former.

Echo Park you can go record shopping at Origami or you can go to the vegan ice cream place or you can browse Stories and sit out back w/ a beverage and you can get a taco. hi l.a. folks, can i bother you for a couple recs for my v. quick trip to your city comprising tomorrow and saturday?

interested in excellent mexican places, and any places that are fun and low-key for wine or cocktails. staying in studio city. also any interesting events or things happening during daytime. thanking u!

call all destroyer, Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:33 (eleven years ago) link

the best mexican in studio city is loteria. for cocktails you might wanna check out bow and truss in north hollywood -- they're a spanish restaurant with an interesting beverage program.

sriracha bishop (get bent), Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:36 (eleven years ago) link

i had a couple of nice cocktails at this good asian fusion spot called (lol) take a bao, on ventura blvd. great draft beers too. not too pricey iirc. haven't been but i've heard good to great things about black market liquor bar, also on ventura blvd. both are just east of laurel canyon.

mexican: there's a location of loteria grill in studio city. very good. i haven't been in ten years but i thought mexicali was ok. for old school, check out casa vega in sherman oaks. been there since the '50s, good times can be had there (if not "great" food.)

re: that bar - the chimneysweep lounge on woodman

The Chimneysweep in Sherman Oaks, which was opened in 1960, isn't themed, but like the Firefox, it has gold-veined mirrors and lots of wood paneling. It also has ghosts, says bartender Millie Bunch, who has been serving up sweetness and double whiskeys to an adoring crowd for 20 years.

"They sit in the corner," Bunch told the Enabler over an amply poured glass of Glenlivet. "They have uniforms on. I don't know what war they were in, but they want to be here."

"Trip the Light Fantastic: A Tribute to Robert Abel & Associates"
November 10, 2012 - 7:30 pm
Billy Wilder Theater, UCLA

Producer-director Robert Abel may not be a household name but his production company, Robert Abel & Associates (RA&A), helped to define the look of an era and to change the future of moving-imagemaking forever. A UCLA alumnus who started out working for computer graphics pioneer, John Whitney, Abel pioneered the application of CGI in commercials, broadcast television and film. In 1971, he co-founded RA&A with Con Pederson (Co-Visual Effects Supervisor, 2001: A Space Odyssey) and assembled a team of artists who combined an intuitive understanding of technology, from the optical to the digital, with an innovative—some might say hallucinogenic—sense of style. RA&A’s fusion of art and technology earned it 33 Clio Awards for its iconic work, including spots for 7UP, Levi Strauss, TRW, Benson & Hedges and the Canned Food Information Council. RA&A’s motion graphics for network television transformed the entire look of the medium. In the late 1970s, the company expanded into music videos and movies, contributing ground-breaking effects and animation work on Star Trek – The Motion Picture (1979), Tron (1982) and the video for The Jacksons' “Can You Feel It” (1980). The UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Visual Effects Society are pleased to celebrate RA&A’s work and legacy with an evening of clips and conversation with some of the company’s key artists and producers."
