went 'duplicity'

'state of play' is kind of ok, though man is ben affleck ever awful

michael clayton isnt the best movie on the list, but its the best tony gilroy movie on the list, so that

I couldn't get 10 minutes into Duplicity, going with Michael Clayton because I kinda can't remember which Bourne movie is which sometimes

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 18:45 (twelve years ago) link

for some reason i thought doug liman wrote bourne identity. i think that one is a cut above. no one seems to agree though.

i kind of love dolores claiborne but maybe i've been able to preserve that feeling only by not having seen it in ten years.

ban drake (the rapper) (max), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 18:45 (twelve years ago) link

i think the other two bournes are better than identity! though identity might have the best script? regardless scripting isnt really what makes those movies, imo

duplicity was good but i was distracted by the horrible horrible clothes clive owen was wearing the whole time. if you are going to make a stylish spy thriller it needs to be STYLISH

gilroy kind of looks like a suit model himself. asshole.

goole, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

I have a soft spot for The Devil's Advocate even tho I know it's not the best here

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

Does Duplicity get better than the opening Mike Nicholsy suits-fighting-in-slo-mo and Roberts/Owen being smug? Or is that basically it?

dolores claiborne and devil's advocate are pretty watchable as far as ridiculous crap goes. Thought I've been meaning to watch Extreme Measures on Instant but it turns out I've been meaning to watch Desperate Measures.

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 May 2011 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

duplicity's alright. denis o'hare & carrie preston get some good scenes in it, but julia roberts is pretty

at this point

for some reason i thought doug liman wrote bourne identity. i think that one is a cut above. no one seems to agree though.

i think bourne sup is p close but basically i agree

i love "Look at this. Look at what they make you give." but that might be the delivery as much as the line. think the Bournes are a wee bit overrated, sort of tempted to go for Devil's Advocate which is pretty hilarious and if they'd got a better Satan than dickhead-era Pacino, might have really been something

Duplicity's trailer looked so promising.

I don't know what kind of bowdlerizing Gilroy did to Robert Ludlum in the Bourne movies – did he improve them? I think so, right? If not, then Michael Clayton is his best "project," I guess. From the list of credits he's a hack who got lucky – in the best sense.

ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

Plot

The plot of the movie consists of Adam Sandler playing two parts, a girl and boy twin. Al Pacino plays himself madly in love with the girl twin of the two.

State of Play is an adap of an infinitely better TV series. Have see no Bournes or Clayton. DoloresC decent, Devil's Advocate kinda awful.

Never actually saw The C Edge but I may still know most of the words to all the Newsies song. I LOVED that movie because, well, young Christian Bale.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:17 (twelve years ago) link

Yup. Sis also loved Swing Kids. Since none of these movies were box office hits, how the hell did she learn about them? Was there a Bale network on CompuServe?

ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

i was going to mention swing kids. christian bale and robert sean leonard. definitely part of the preteen girl hot boy movie canon.

x-post lol horseshoe :D

lol idk but I'm pretty sure I saw Swing Kids the weekend it opened. Christian Bale AND Robert Sean Leonard. IN SUITS. C'mon. I found a notebook from around then while I was cleaning out my parents' house and it had "Swing Kids" doodled in script on the inside. *hangs head in shame* I mean, I guess it could have been worse. I could have written "Swing Heil! Swing Heil!".

ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

Shocked and angry, Peter shouts, "You're turning into a Nazi!" to which Thomas bluntly responds, "So what if I am?". Arvid suddenly realizes that there is no future for him in Germany and no hope of escape. He goes home and commits suicide in the bathtub, slitting his wrists with a broken record.

ginny thomas and tonic (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 May 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

omg frank whaley was so tragic in it! this movie was responsible for me learning who django reinhardt was btw and i will forever associate him with frank whaley.

I remember having like 1st generation German guilt for finding Bale so hot in that movie too and making sure to emphasize to myself that I found him hottest before he became a Nazi.
