j/k lol simmons (history mayne), Monday, 5 July 2010 18:00 (thirteen years ago) link

xp yeah I went with my first instinct, otherwise I'd be contemplating this all week.

sofatruck, Monday, 5 July 2010 18:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I think it's Guttenberg for me too -- but so many strong ones. from S2E4 and onward it was basically a perfect show. i wasn't in love with Not On Your Wife Opening Night the first time I saw it, but that episode actually repays repeated viewings a lot. it's a really densely constructed ep.

Mordy, Monday, 5 July 2010 18:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Ricky Sargulesh is probably my favorite overall. Everything about that one was pitch-perfect, from the murder plot to the Henry/Girlfriend dynamic to being Constance's send-off episode (at least until S02E10).

Johnny Fever, Monday, 5 July 2010 18:23 (thirteen years ago) link

gotta be one of these:

S1E8: "Celebrate Ricky Sargulesh"
S1E9: "James Rolf High School Twentieth Reunion"

I'll vote the latter because it's an amazing Ron episode

S1E3: "Pepper McMasters Singles Seminar"

^ pretty dope too

have to say, i think s1 rules over s2, if only for jane lynch. i like megan mullaly too but lynch is like next-lev genius

fraps rule everything around me (s1ocki), Monday, 5 July 2010 22:55 (thirteen years ago) link

i agree with slocki -- also jane lynch's replacement in s1 >>>> megan mullaly

the boy boy young messi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 01:13 (thirteen years ago) link

mullaly's character was kind of inherently unfunny... altho i think she brought some more lols towards the end of the season when they had her playing the airhead role ("what is the flank on a human? vagina?") as opposed to the stage mom role

the boy boy young messi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 01:14 (thirteen years ago) link

she was funny but like... it got a bit samey... and she just couldn't compete with shit like "slingin' some dervs"

symsymsym, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 03:23 (thirteen years ago) link

i think one thing that the show really lost w/out constance was the AMAZING kyle/constance dynamic

max, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 03:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I voted the reunion episode because that's the one where the show really reaches full steam as a funny-but-actually-kinda-sad show in the vein of The Office (the British version). I actually think the show owes a fair amount to The Office.

i have to re-screen season one as well, but since this poll will be closed before i am able, i'll give it to the one that made me realize i was watching a great show: the Sin Say Shun Awards After Party

richie aprile (rockapads), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 06:16 (thirteen years ago) link

agree that lynch > mullaly. always felt like she was on a slightly different wavelength than the rest of the cast. otoh that can definitely be what it's like for the new hires at any job...

i felt like kyle and roman came into their own more as characters in season 2. i haven't rewatched any season 1 eps for a while though. <3 ron so much throughout both seasons. another favorite scene is him with henry in orgy ep, sitting on the curb, drinking whiskey, talking about their gfs... then uda calls and they look at each other and start cracking up. so perfect!

wrt party down & sports coverage

the boy boy young messi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 19:40 (thirteen years ago) link

torn between:

S1E5: "Sin Say Shun Awards After Party"
loved this one because it was the first time they really showed they weren't gonna pull punches w/ Roman so he could be the lovable nerd

S1E6: "Taylor Stiltskin Sweet Sixteen"
J.K. Simmons, nuff said

S2E5: "Steve Guttenberg's Birthday"
should rewatch s2 but this is definitely the standout

S1E4: "Investors Dinner"
loved how they got to solve a mystery Scooby Doo-style in this one but it still had a very typical anticlimactic story arc. also I think this is the one with the scene w/ Kyle quietly blowing off a guy for making fun of Constance, weirdly the most heartwarming moment of the whole series for me.

S1E8: "Celebrate Ricky Sargulesh"
unfuckwithable, obviously

S1E9: "James Rolf High School Twentieth Reunion"
WS Molly Parker

Davey Mo Coulier (some dude), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 19:42 (thirteen years ago) link

for me the hokey bum note in the show was the super predictable nerd-fawns-over-Star-Trek-cast-member plot in the S1 finale

for me the hokey bum note in the show was the super predictable nerd-fawns-over-Star-Trek-cast-member plot in the S1 finale

true but it was redeemed for me by "it's the...talking" in the bathroom scene. especially when in a later episode roman gets all self-conscious when someone else is trying to talk to him while he's trying to piss.

kenan, Friday, 9 July 2010 05:03 (thirteen years ago) link

sixteen episodes in & it will take some srs reflection for me to properly vote in this poll. Dunno if it is my overall fave so far, but I just watched "Not On Your Wife Opening Night" & I thought all of the intricately overlapping cases of mistaken identity were brilliantly handled - that sort of slapstick usually leaves a bad taste w/ me, but they totes pulled it off.

was it the gay wedding one where ron is in the back of the van drunk and blubbering? thats prob. the best scene in the whole series.

Could be. Two things: Ron's plea to Henry to promise him that it's all worth something, and Henry shooing Casey away, and her saying, "I wanna watch!"

kenan, Friday, 9 July 2010 05:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Also a sloppy-drunk Ron throwing it in Henry's face that he gave up, which is harsh enough, but then immediately turning it on himself because people still like Henry and nobody likes Ron, which is harsh plus deeply pathetic. Pathetic in the common meaning, and also the Greek one. Yeah, that scene is the center of the series.

does anyone else love the company picnic ep? i like uda even more since i started watching veronica mars. also like how what finally brings them together as as team is wanting to beat valhalla. kyle and roman paling it up for the caterer obstacle course prank was cute. would read party down slash :x

lots of good lines too - "you're a wizard at making women uncomfortable"

also watched sin say shun again... definitely one of the best. has pretty much all of my favorite parts of the show -- sad and cringe-inducing ron, fun but ultimately disappointing henry/casey dynamics, drugs, roman and kyle competition, hollywood weirdness -- but almost no constance! like i wanted to see her counseling casey after her e trip went wrong or something. and the last scene might be my favorite henry moment. which one is the surprise?? it bugs him so much!

not much constance in the great sin say shun ep, but her response to being asked about E is one of my all time favorite moments

symsymsym, Monday, 12 July 2010 02:27 (thirteen years ago) link

My fave moment in the Sin show is actually the little agitated lonely dance Henry is left doing in the deserted club.

I love this show, but I can't tell if it's because of or despite the fact that it's basically just a half hour of people ripping on each other. Particularly Ron, who is a big David Brent punching bag, though along those lines thank god this isn't another fake documentary.

that guy who plays the rapper, i don't remember his name, but some kids at the college where I work were watching some comedy video of him going up to people in Wal-Mart and trying to get people to buy his DVD, and it was weird because I only knew him from the few episodes of "Undeclared" he was in a long time ago and from this one Party Down episode, had no idea he was a guy that college kids like I guess?

the 1st ep is def one of the weakest in the run -- i think there's something sorta played-seeming about the 'im the regular dude amongst the crazies' set-up, but it pays off for the rest of the show

think that the opening scene of the investor's dinner in S1 might be the funniest scene in the entire show

- constance's elaborate explanation of the "character" she played in "baretta" who was actually just a hooker

- this exchange:

roman: i'm a writer like einsten was a patent clerk, you asshole"
kyle: uh, pretty sure einsten was never in the army.

Watching it with a sense of what it's supposed to set up and how the structure of the episode itself is supposed to pay off, the first ep is actually really well constructed. Maybe not as funny as other ones, or with any really great standout moments (although Enrico Colantoni's freakout in the pool is pretty awesome), but there's so much tension built up over almost-recognizing Henry among other things -- still stand up imho.
