GBX, that is about three miles from my mom's (we go to either Jerry's in Edina or the Byerly's with the chandeliers to buy ours, they're closer). I make my mom buy at least two packs whenever I go home for Xmas and wonder why I (temporarily) gain 10lbs over the vacation. My uncle used to buy a whole box of them wholesale to grill for the Izaak Walton League picnic he threw every summer (they lived on Minnehaha Creek and were into conservation).

This would be fairer if it were sausages vs. tacos, 'cause I love hot dogs but there are so many different kinds of tacos; various meats, fish, shrimp, crispy, soft, w/pico de gallo or w/green salsa, etc. However if you factored in all sausages and all the various breads and condiments that went with them...

Tacos by a million miles.

First of all...I'm not always so good with the wheat, and tacos are gluten free! Usually.

And I ate at Hot Doug's in Chicago yesterday. It was pretty great, but wasn't as good as the cemita I had at Cemitas Puebla, and that wasn't even a taco, but I reckon if you put the contents of that pastor cemita in a corn tortilla instead of on an awesome crusty sesame bun you'd have a hell of a taco.

yes because surely liking hot dogs more than tacos is an ethical decision.

I picked hot dogs, though i am using a somewhat broad definition i.e. "encased meat in a bun," therefore all of the glories of hot dougs would be included.

It could be my pining away for all things northeast again (see: bagels); and while I haven't had an amazing h-dog in a while, a taco just doesn't bring me to that omega-point of pleasure. There's something about stuffing that last third of a hot dog in your mouth that's uniquely satisfying.

pj, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:34 (fourteen years ago) link

Difficult one except when I think about it I always get Kielbasa from the hot-dog cart. Tacos then because they are good for every meal and so versatile.

dan you ever try a taco arabe from there?

No, just the pastor cemita. Being on vacation and hitting some food spots, and yet to hit Hot Dougs, I really didn't want to overdo it. Fact is, we had flown in and due to weather and being re-routed to Grand Rapids, ended up having a 7 hour flight from NY to Chi, so when we arrived friday we were starved and went straight to the Red Apple, polish all you can eat buffet, and the rest of the trip involved walking a difficult line between wanting to pig out midwestern style and wanting to not be totally sick and miserable the entire time!

We had seen Cemitas Puebla on Diners Dives and Drive-ins and it looked like the real deal and it was really great.

And even if I think of hot dog as meaning ANY kind of encased meat topped with anything on any kind of bun, Tacos still win. Now, I REALLY love processed meat, but the purity of a good pork taco, with it's crunchy bits and soft bits and fatty bits and juicy bits and questionable bits, all the textures, is just a wonderful thing.

I think they featured their taco arabe on DD&D, too. Further evidence of the taco's versatility: tacos arabe have a unique taste, and i find myself craving one once a month or so. (usually i get a cemita AND a taco arabe, and don't have to eat for the rest of the day. or weekend)

New Orleans isn't the greatest taco town, but all the C. American laborers after the storm brought in a big influx of taco/pupusa places. I probably eat tacos twice as often as hot dogs, too. The hot dog is just a higher high. What can I say, I'm a mystery meat kinda guy.

pj, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:46 (fourteen years ago) link

for instance, u need some freshly made tortillas for a truly pimpin taco experience; a poppy seed bun is about as fancy as u need 2 get w/a hot dog, and even then it still doesnt really matter as long as u got ur mustard and a frank.

I put cheese and ketchup on my hot dogs alla times, if I can get it. Don't rly see the point in eating a dog that is not a cheese or chili & cheese dog. A serious sausage like kielbasa or something, then yes, it haz a taste that is worth tasting. But a standard dog does not.

this is why you get 2-3 DIFFERENT tacos. one hot dog wouldn't fill me up and ugh do not want to eat more than that. but i could eat 80 tacos from just one taco place and each could be very noticeably different.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 16:53 (fourteen years ago) link

besides being more versatile, tacos are also more credible as actual food. hot dogs are a lovable novelty item for baseball games and family reunions, like the crap beer you drink them with.

Went with the basic grilled dog with everything on it, so I could have my proper chicago do, which I forgot is a messy pain in the ass to eat, and a polish dog with kraut and relish. I did not put ketchup on either, as all the signs say, but will secretly fess to being a ketchup on dog fan. With relish.

I have to go with hot dogs because I've never had a good veggie taco

This is totally weird to me! I kept thinking as I was reading this thread that the reason I immediately chose tacos is because I don't meat. Veggie hot dogs can be decent (when I'm at Hot Doug's, I get a veggie dog with some of the more exotic condiments), but they're always a substitute for the real thing. Whereas you can get a great taco with just beans, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and avocado.

True re veggie tacos, but I was thinking of a taco with TVP in it (or something along those lines) which I've never seen anywhere.

no, this is fallacious logic. for example, what if a city only had 1,000 mexicans but they were all experts at making awesome tacos, while another city had 1 million mexicans but they were all shitty taco-makers. also i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that at this point there may be some non-mexicans who are capable of making awesome tacos.

Not second city. That doesn't include border states. Cities with more Mexicans then chicago:

San Antonio
Los Angeles
Santa Ana
San Diego
El Paso

thing is, chicago has more of a variety of mexicans (ie mexicans from various states/regions within Mexico) than all cities in the American Southwest. Which is why you'll get deliciousness like taco arabe in Chicago in addition to the litany of "standard" tacos.

Ergo, the two best taco towns are in Occupied Mexico.

first, chicago has the best pizza? C'mon, but we don't need this to turn into a NYC pizza thread.

But I'd like to talk more about NYC Mexican. It's true that for a long time all you had were mission-style imposters, cheap-o joints and other non-authentic stuff, but the last few years has seen an explosion of mexican food, just in time for me to move to Queens. Not to mention Red Hook Huaraches...

Chicago Tribune

Let's have some proof of that. (Not saying it couldn't happen.)

Hard to find data. This is all I could find in brief research:

CHICAGO — As the Chicago area’s Mexican community has grown, so too has the variety of Mexican fare at the city’s restaurants. Looking at regional dishes on local menus is often a best indicator of where Mexican immigrants hail from. Still, through a Web site operated by the Institute of Mexicans Abroad, we learned that Michoacan, Guerrero, Puebla, Veracruz, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Aguascalientes, the State of Mexico and Oaxaca all contribute a high percentage of their emigrants to Chicago.

^the site that references is in Spanish and not very well laid out.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:09 (fourteen years ago) link

To more directly address the thread question: hot dogs are fucking nasty, and who cares if you put ketchup of mustard or relish or the precious sweaty dewdrops from the breasts of the Goddess of Pork and Beef Byproducts on it, hot dogs are still just nasty. New York style... some other style... shove it in your hole and then shut it because what just went in there is totally disgusting.

Also, Chicago-style pizza isn't pizza and should be disqualified entirely, thus ending the debate.

So amazingly otm. I'd never even dealt with the possibility before I moved to a big city with a lot of hole-in-the-wall food places, but never eat food from a place that serves two kinds of ethnic cuisine. Pizza, for these purposes, counts as ethnic. Do not eat pizza from a place that also serves Mexican food, or Mexican food from a place that also serves Chinese food, or Thai food from a place that also serves pizza, or bagels from a place with Chinese characters on the awning, or tamales from a place that also serves fried chicken, and if you eat pizza from a place that also serves Mexican food and is run by Chinese people, you should be ashamed of yourself for making your parents fly up to visit you in the hospital.

Re Chin DIAN, why is that a stretch? Because if you combine those two cuisines that's approximately what Burmese food tastes like. There's only one Burmese place of note here in London and it is damned good. I just googled for a Mpls one and surprisingly, no Burmese restaurant there.

See also Uighur lamb skewers highly flavoured with anise/cumin/chili/garlic. Some of China is so near various Stans the food is skewerspilaffstew as a result.

In London: Pizza/Kebab split is not badly offensive to me, besides it is the mobile drunk food of a nation, and I go batshit if there's too much Cantonese on a Viet take-away menu.

bad hijab (suzy), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 22:44 (fourteen years ago) link

Chinese-Indian food is a huge style of food all on it's own and is utterly and totally awesome. Look for the words Tangra or Mirch and you're halfway there.

I mean, some fusion is great. Pastor tacos comes from a doner kebob/schwarma influence for instance.

But trying to please everyone is no good. My area is filled with ethnic eateries that add all kinds of italian and american delights in an effort to please the locals but fail everybody, while the places that stay authentic get the foodie love.

I'm looking at you Amsterdam Cafe with your tacos and pizza and burgers but when I finally went inside discovered a pretty awesome Dominican steam table.

I still mourn the cafe by my old flat that did this; 2/3 of customers were having felafel or their other perennial fave, chicken escalope in wrap with salad/garlic/chili.

Houston has better tacos than someone up there is giving credit for. Pastor , chopped onions and cilantro on corn tortillas at Ruchi's Taqueria. cheap and late.

Houston also has more Mexicans than Chicago. Wiki's numbers don't add up.

Per the 2000 census data, Chicago had ~530,000 and Houston had ~527,000. It's entirely possible that Houston's now #2.

torta with hot dog in it

Have you seen this?

Yeah, I feel like it's usually called "torta la loca" or something and has a breaded cutlet, some ham or something, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes, crema, queso fresco, jalapenos, and then a split hot dog or two. When you're eating it you don't really sense the hot dog qua hot dog so much, it's just kind of a big disgusting awesomeness that comes at you whole.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 3 July 2009 00:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Tried to have Chicago Dogs for the supper tonight but just couldn't pull it together. No sport peppers, out of relish, underripe tomato, foolishly decided to toast and then accidentally overtoasted the "wheat" buns. At least I had the all-beef frank and Plochmann's mustard. Still basically a travesty and I feel shame for having eaten them.

Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in this history of mankind.

Mankind -- that word should have new meaning for all of us today.

We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore.

We will be united in our common interests.

Perhaps its fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution -- but from annihilation.

We're fighting for our right to live, to exist.

And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice:

"We will not go quietly into the night!

We will not vanish without a fight!

We're going to live on!

We're going to survive!"

Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!

i made tacos last week on my family vacation. we did blue corn hard shells and white corn soft. used refried beans for main filling, lettuce, corn, rice, + a chipotle lime hot sauce that turned out pretty good

mark cl, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 16:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Had tacos for lunch yesterday from here, and they do this thing where they put a corn tortilla on the grill, and stick another corn tortilla to the first one USING CHEESE, and then put all the taco stuffins, including more cheese, on top and I was almost bouncing up and down I was so happy to see this happening in front of me.

i lived in chile for a semester. it's called a 'completo' right?

mark cl, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 12:53 (fourteen years ago) link

The completo is a type of hot dog eaten in Chile. It is usually served with ingredients such as avocado, diced tomato and mayonnaise. In this form it may be known as an "italiano" (Italian Completo) or Tomate-Palta-Mayo (TPM). With the common addition of sauerkraut, known locally as chucrut, it may be called "classic completo". Ketchup, mustard and Aji chileno are the typical condiments.

bordain went to chile on his show monday night. haven't watched it yet, but I'm thinking there's gonna be some hot dogs like that.

there's a place in Jackson Heights called Xtasis Megahamburger that I think sells various weird south american hamburgers and hot dogs. Walked by the other night and noticed a burger with shrimp on it.

Here's their menu:

I'm guessing "Perros" means hot dogs.

Man, cochinita pibil may be the most overrated labor-intensive regional Mexican cuisine. It's no shock they only eat it in the Yucatan.

Al pastor, fresh from the spit, ftw.

Mazzy Tsar (PBKR), Saturday, 30 November 2019 14:21 (four years ago) link

Conceptually I like tacos better than hot dogs, but I've had more substandard tacos than bad hot dogs. Tough call, but consistency has to count for something.
