You FOOL, this will be at 3000 before nightfall.

question--i am looking for a bar where i can play settlers of catan. where is somewhere

a) in manhattan (somewhere between, lets say houston and, like, 42nd st--trying to meet up w/ people from the ues and morningside heights; i live in bk)
b) not really crowded or loud after work
c) pretty cheap
d) they wont care if we play a board game and have some beers (i imagine this is most bars but you never know)

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Monday, 30 March 2009 17:08 (fifteen years ago) link

You want Hell's Kitchen, then, probably? When I briefly dated someone over there, he drank almost exclusively at the Gaf and Conker Hill. I prefer the Gaf but it's a little short of tables, so prob Conker would be better cos it has a few booths. Plus, Max, it's on the West Side so it's good for you and the UWS people.

That's all I got at the mo....

ACTUALLY I take that back -- the Gaf has a whole basement full of tables, IF the construction/plumbing is done by now. Haven't been since December. You could call and ask if basement is open? That would make it perfect.

max i'm not sure if you have ppl to play w/already but monday nights there's a settlers night at a bar on the uws - cosi's.

maybe common ground i have no idea how inconvient thatll be tho

Point being, I hate all of you. (Lamp), Monday, 30 March 2009 18:18 (fifteen years ago) link

wtf @ there already being a settlers of cazan NIGHT at a bar

catan oops

also i would recommend mona's on 13th & b for this purpose, tho god knows why i'm telling board game players to go to one of my default manhattan bars.

i have ppl to play with + i sort of imagine settlers "night" would be a little intense for my group

also fuck if im going all the way up the west side

it's hardly even a walk to get to mona's or 11th st bar...? i mean it is like 2 blocks from the l train and just a few more over from union square.

i miss mona's. does richie still own it? i recall that he was trying to sell it a year or so ago.

yeah that didn't happen afaik

OK, you're right. You know I'm lazy.

i loved the attempt to spruce that place up - several years ago there was a what appeared to be an oriental rug, long and narrow like a runner, hung on the wall above the bar. awesome.

Althought elements of this expansion were available separately from 2004 to 2007, this pack did not release in English until 2008. It combines elements of fishing, events, expanded trading, barbarian attacks, camel trains, and much more to make a more well-rounded playing experience.

one month passes...

is this place open yet?

Der Schwarze Kölner Manchester, England, native and former Cologne resident Dale Hall, along with his girlfriend, Randi Lockemann, gives Fort Greene its first German beer garden. Eighteen Deutsch brews will be on tap, along with another 20 by the bottle. In keeping with Hall’s Cologne pedigree, three breweries from that city will represent. In addition to the beers, the space—which features communal tables indoors and both sidewalk and garden seating—will serve traditional foods. Cold items like wurst and cheese plates will be coming first, and hot dishes, including schnitzel and even more sausage, a couple months later. 710 Fulton St at South Oxford St, Fort Greene, Brooklyn (no phone yet)

I went there recently. It's Irishy. Also there's liable to be music a lot of nights, since that place is "the home of Irish music in NYC." Which is a draw for me, but not for all.

how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Monday, 23 April 2012 16:15 (twelve years ago) link

like what streets in Midtown East? I'm at 44th around Grand Central and most everything around here blows. generic Irish bars with $8 pints. best one is probably O'Neill's at 45th and 3rd, decent happy hour. Perfect Pint around the corner on 45th is ok, multi-level with an open air roof bar, always mobbed though. those are my usual picks if I go out after work around here but like I said the prices are ridic. I'm hoping someone has a good answer for you actually.

there's also a relatively new german beer garden upstairs on 3rd Ave but I haven't tried it yet. Hofbrau Bierhaus.

I (sorta) regret to inform you that my bar HiFi will be closing at the end of this calendar month, ending my 23 year tenure at 169 Avenue A. All parties booked before the end of the month will happen as planned. The story? Quite simply, the renovations we undertook a few years ago to reinvigorate the business were not successful in putting us back on a good financial footing. The generation of people who inhabit this neighborhood on weekends remain mostly indifferent to the place. HiFi seems to occupy a place square in the middle between “dive bar” and “mixologist paradise” — and while I hoped that would help us have a broad appeal to the newbies, it turns out that it translated as utilitarian (aka boring) to their tastes.

Can someone familiar with the current state of NYC bardom explain to me what he's talking about? What kind of bar do the people who live in the Brownies/HiFi neighborhood (or "inhabit it on weekends" -- are those different people?) now want? What does it mean for a bar to be "utilitarian" and why is that bad?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 5 January 2018 20:51 (six years ago) link

I think he means they either want $13 cocktails or to be drinking with grandpas.

$30 cocktails

, Friday, 5 January 2018 21:16 (six years ago) link

I went to hi fi once in the past two years or so and despite the renovations(?) it still had the vibe of an old neighborhood place (which it was) and not really the kind of joint where 20 somethings would hang out given the multitude of options on Ave A, where there are more bars per block than almost anywhere else in manhattan.

It did have a really cool, intimate space for music in the back.

White Horse tavern sold

Villagers have heard that “exactly as it is” pledge before about such historic places as the Waverly Inn and the Minetta Tavern, which were then turned into playpens for the rich and the vacuous. However, since the buildings contain 17 market-rate apartments it appears this deal is not so much to acquire a historic pub, but more a real estate transaction....

Author and radio host Malachy McCourt told me that he was prepared to lead a wake at the White Horse. When I asked him if he was serious he emailed me, “Yes I am serious about the gig. Peter Carlaftes of Three Rooms Press asked me to do it. He lives in the Village and is appalled at the destruction of the artistic life. So the answer is of course Yes! So Thursday, 21st March at 4 pm and only the God-guy knows what will happen, but let’s go for it!”
