people who say this: did you really "forget" to eat? did you make a conscious decision not to eat or to postpone your eating?

food: never forget

shiitake maki (La Lechera), Monday, 15 December 2008 13:37 (seventeen years ago)

I kind of wish I would forget to eat once in a while. As it is, I'm very conscious of mealtimes. I suspect that most people that genuinely forget have irregular schedules.

Surmounter, Monday, 15 December 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

I think people sometimes forget to make time to eat which isn't quite the same thing. Nowadays I make a real point of always eating breakfast and lunch on a work day cos I know my head goes to shit if I don't.

Tony Woodcockfarmer (Noodle Vague), Monday, 15 December 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

I always forget to eat. I hate food. When I was a kid I couldn't wait for the day when we really did eat all our meals in pill form.

burt_stanton, Monday, 15 December 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

i've only ever heard it being used in this manner:

"here's your homework?"

"Sorry I forgot to do it"

"Do you ever forget to eat?"

tron, Monday, 15 December 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

^^ this is proof that people who "forget" to eat have some sort of disordered relationship with food

i asked this b/c last night at work dinner three out of three female coworkers said that they hadn't eaten anything yet that day (it was dinnertime ) and it was because they "forgot"

i, on the other hand, had eaten breakfast, lunch and a snack

shiitake maki (La Lechera), Monday, 15 December 2008 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

that ^^ was xp

shiitake maki (La Lechera), Monday, 15 December 2008 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

if i'm transcribing, i can get deep into it and before i know it, its almost midnight and i haven't had dinner, and may have forgotten lunch.

i do this at least once a week and i don't have a disordered relationship with food. i usually end up making up for it by eating double at night anyway.

My Civ addiction is well-documented but wasting your life playing computer games and snacking like crazy are not exactly strangers to each other.

Tony Woodcockfarmer (Noodle Vague), Monday, 15 December 2008 14:37 (seventeen years ago)

shiitake maki (La Lechera), Monday, 15 December 2008 14:37 (seventeen years ago)

don't these people have blood sugar levels they have to maintain?

shiitake maki (La Lechera), Monday, 15 December 2008 14:38 (seventeen years ago)

yeah like when i start getting hungry i go oh i should eat but let me finish this homework or note taking or whatever and then the time goes by so it's like oops, i forgot and it's dinner time

harbl, Monday, 15 December 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

maybe that is more of an inconvenience thing

harbl, Monday, 15 December 2008 14:41 (seventeen years ago)

so it's the latter

your belly is saying one thing, and you're saying another

(note: this is not forgetting!)

shiitake maki (La Lechera), Monday, 15 December 2008 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

i've had a pretty heavy cold for the last few days, all i've managed to eat has been iboprufen, cough sweets and toast. drank gallons of orange squash, tho.

gonna have to eat something substantial because i feel dizzy and weak, but i just really don't feel like eating at all.

mensrightsguy (internet person), Monday, 15 December 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

the people who "forget to eat" are the same people who bang their head agaisnt the wall in frustration when they can't "decide what to eat"

cutty, Monday, 15 December 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

what is wrong with these people

btw there is an exception for being sick. of course that would affect one's appetite.

shiitake maki (La Lechera), Monday, 15 December 2008 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

i think the only time i have ever forgotten to eat was when i took dayquil b/c of a cold and it was like 3 and i still wasn't hungry. but that was because there's speed in that stuff, not because whoops i forgot to eat (under normal circumstances)

shiitake maki (La Lechera), Monday, 15 December 2008 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

I suspect there's a mentality? personality type? that's more prone to being consumed with an activity or an idea, to the extent that physical demands are only noticed on a really low level and are drowned out by the bigger flow of work.

Most people don't spend very much (if any) time in that mode, though, apart from mad geniuses. And they always seem to end up needing a house-keeper for the everyday stuff, or a friend who stops by and reminds them to bathe.

The rest of us, if we get caught up in something, I suspect are doing exactly what LaLe says: deciding to put off eating til another time.

i forget to eat when i start getting hunger pangs way before an actual meal time, eg 10.30 in the morning, and by the time lunchtime rolls around i've basically gotten used to the hunger. it's more b/c i rarely know what the time is though. i don't ever feel like i'm unable to function if i don't eat.

lex pretend, Monday, 15 December 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

lol other end of the weirdo food delusion spectrum

ice cr?m, Monday, 15 December 2008 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

i think there are two types of people who say they forget to eat:

1. women who don't actually forget, but decide it's better for their figures to not make time for it and don't want to admit that
2. people who play a lot of computer games. after living with three guys who've all simply played through lunch or dinner and only said, "hey, I think I might be hungry" hours later, i really do think they forget. current roommate: "i'm in a lot better mood on weekends now that i've started trying to remember to eat lunch."

Maria, Monday, 15 December 2008 14:58 (seventeen years ago)

I don't understand, jho? Are you saying you don't think blood sugar levels are a consideration in scheduled eating?

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Monday, 15 December 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

oh dear, i am on the "other end" (though i don't know about blood sugar)! i get hungry pretty much every three hours, which is way too often considering the amount & type of food i eat and that i haven't exercised in like two months. it's really annoying at work because i don't have the kind of job where you can take breaks to get coffee or a snack.

Maria, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

cutty, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

ice cr?m, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

how about not forgetting to eat you aspies

cutty, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

I've gone through exceptionally busy days at work where I'll only realize around 4-5pm that I didn't have lunch. This really only happens when I'm dealing with something unexpected - if I know I've got meetings that won't allow me a lunch break I get incredibly hungry.

I'M ACTUALLY FINE (I DIED), Monday, 15 December 2008 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

I sometimes get mega shakey and light-headed if I'm hungry. I guess that's probably the blood sugar thing. Doesn't happen very often though.

harbl, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

I like food but sometimes I just don't have an appetite at all and just drink tea all day. I forget to eat because I don't have an appetite so my body forgets to tell me to eat.

Lately I have a proper meal every two or three days, the other days I'm just having toast or soy milk or cereal.

u s steel, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

If I'm really concentrated on one specific task (most often video games, but sometimes work (c++ programming)), I sometimes just won't notice that I'm hungry.

It's happening less and less as I get older though.

peter in montreal, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

i don't think i've ever forgotten to eat. the only thing that comes close is when i'm doing something absorbing like editing drum tracks on the computer and i realize i'm really hungry, but don't want to stop. then it's an hour later and i'm like "oh shit i better eat something now."

but usually i'm planning my next meal hours in advance.

cutty, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

Well I mean, somewhere in the middle is the fact that most of us eat way more than we need (or way more of some things) so it's not crazy to say that we could prob all eat SMALLER meals or HEALTHIER ones.

But skipping completely is terrible for you in so many ways.

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Monday, 15 December 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

for the most part, aside from the occasional giant burger or whatever, i eat extremely healthy food in normal sized portions.
but I EAT.

shiitake maki (La Lechera), Monday, 15 December 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

so do I (plan the next meal), but there's still been occassions where I truly forgot to eat. Usually it's because I eat work lunches late, and it seems absurd that the human body needs to be stoked so often.

― harbl, Monday, December 15, 2008 9:53 AM Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

^^^ this and this. I "forget to eat" all the time! It's a shorthand way of saying "I was dimly aware that eating would be a good idea, should really put this track/program/project down and go eat in a minute...and TOTALLY DID NOT REALIZE it had been like four hours since that thought first occurred to me." So the forgetting isn't like, you had no concept whatsoever that you were hungry - it's that you made a vague decision to eat and then totally lost that decision in the shuffle. Suspect the computer gamer thing is about the same.

I'm sorry the OP loathes the monstrous, hateful females who diet on the DL, but whatever your opinions on that it's a separate issue I think from what most people on this thread are talking about.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:19 (seventeen years ago)

i eat something when i get up (7:30ish), early lunch (11:00 - 11:30ish), little snack around 3:00, dinner around 6:30-7:00. so yeah, basically every 4 hours.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 15 December 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

i don't either but they are certainly free to do it xp

harbl, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

skipping meals implys that theres actually some set time that yr supposed to eat

There is!! That set time is roughly 3 hours from the LAST time you ate something! Oh, I see cutty has that covered (xp).

The feeling of hunger is really subjective and is caused by certain chemicals getting to your brain from your stomach -- which is why things like exercise and smoking and etc etc can suppress appetite: they break the connecting between body chemistry and how you "feel"/experience that chemistry.

So just because you don't FEEL hungry doesn't mean your cells don't need glucose.

I have:

Genuinely forgotten to eat (this happens more on weekends when lunch is not also a break from working or some week nights when things are just crazy and suddenly it is 9 pm and I realizing I'm starving, grumpy, and kind of shaky or when I go out for drinks right after work and don't make eating something a priority).
Failed to make time to eat.
Opted not to eat a meal because doing so was an inconvenience.

But:
This doesn't happen very often because if I don't eat I will get the shakes/get really grumpy/get confused/cry.
Historically I have a less than healthy relationship with food, so eating regular meals is key to mental happiness.
I like eating. It's fun.

ice cr?m, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

obv i never tried any of it w/super strong discipline tho

ice cr?m, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

Also I'm already happy fattey so I am self-excused from worrying about eating at certain times or in certain ways or certain amounts since my goal is "satisfied and energized" and not like OPTIMAL CALORIC OPTIMIZATION or something.

atty at LOL (Jenny), Monday, 15 December 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

wait, you're supposed to eat every 3 hours?

a typical work day for me is getting up at 7:30, not eating anything until lunch around noon, then not eating anything until supper at 7:30. Occasionally I'll have a snack or something around 4:00. I know I should eat breakfast and I've made some attempts at doing it regularly in the past, but I just don't like eating early in the morning.

peter in montreal, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

eating when yr hungry and actually letting yrself get hungry

Some of my MOST satisfying eating comes after a really big energy expenditure, usually sustained exercise of some kind. Which also suppresses appetite, so if I don't MAKE A POINT of re-fueling, I won't feel "hungry" enough to eat what I need. But it's like as soon as that first bite hits, it tastes AMAZING and my cells go CRAZY putting that energy back out, and my body temperature goes up and I feel human again, whereas before I had no idea how BAD I felt because brain chemistry was covering it up.

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Monday, 15 December 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

The other half forgets to eat all the time. I badger him into eating sometimes because otherwise he gets dizzy/mopey/anxious.

I have forgotten to go to bed because of Civ many a time, but I could never forget to eat (cz I am a fattey and [convince myself] I'm hungry well before every mealtime and generally don't have the willpower to leave it more than half an hour without acting on it).

Also it has been many years since I was sufficiently wrapped up in a pursuit not to be distracted by, say, alt-tabbing every 30 seconds, checking all my email, reading ILX, eating crisps.

I wish neither of these were true, so not gonna comment on meal-forgetters because it's all just envy (meal-skipping is not particularly healthy, but my everyday diet is worse, so...).

i will have eaten my lunch before noon today, you can bet your fucking house on that. i get in to work between 7.30am and 8.00am so my rationalization is that i'm an hour ahead of the day. in the afternoon, if i'm not too busy i will wander out to get a snack. if i am too busy, i'll get a 50c bag of Funyuns on the way home around 5.00pm. it's a good life.

also, Funyuns.

shiitake maki (La Lechera), Monday, 15 December 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

hula hoops are british crisps, in a hoop shape. the beef flavour is the king of the hula hoops. Funyuns are better tho.

Millennium Ducats (Roberto Spiralli), Monday, 15 December 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

Right...effects of food on mood, good to be aware of. I turn into a raging bitch on days when there are 8-9 hours between lunch and dinner and I don't have time to snack at work. I wish my roommates who get home earlier than me on those regularly scheduled days would think "hey maybe it's my turn to cook dinner, so when my hungry roommate gets home she won't bite my head off for not doing my share of cooking and shopping," but somehow that almost never happens. And then we have spaghetti.

ice cr?m, Monday, 15 December 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

for the most part, aside from the occasional giant burger or whatever, i eat extremely healthy food in normal sized portions.
but I EAT.

do you want a medal or something? people who make a big f'ing deal about how they "forgot" to eat 24/7 are obnoxious but you're coming across as a huge pill every time someone's challenged your opinion that this is impossible to actually do and everyone who does so is clearly some kind of anorexic. OMG YOU EAT MORE THAN OTHER PPL -- good job??

also as someone with massive blood sugar problems -- jhosh is totally right. also, if you are truly having some kind of blood sugar episode, in my experience it is better to drink juice than try to shovel food down your gullet (works faster!)

also, everyone is different cutty. if i ate every 3 hours i'd become sick and exhausted.

some of you seriously need to mind your own business.

It's also easy to forget to eat when you are on a very long drive. Somehow driving/passenging in your own little car makes it so you never ever feel hungry. (Thirsty, yes, hungry, not really.) BUT when you get out of the car and eat (ie not fast food, like some situation where you are eating while not driving) damn, you realize you were starving and the food feels so nice.

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Monday, 15 December 2008 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

did i forget about the quiche? yeah. i'd just returned from the only store big enough to sell evaporated milk, which is a 20 minute walk away, so i put the pie crust in the freezer and we used the eggs and vegetables for other meals.

abbott, i've noticed that i don't get hungry when i'm on long drives, too. i guess it's so much more sedentary than normal life, it takes a couple hours longer to digest food. there are always lots of coffee stops, though!

Maria, Monday, 15 December 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think I forget to eat. But I don't have any schedule for eating. So if I miss a few meals in a row, I don't consider it that I've forgotten. I've simply neglected. To forget to eat, it seems to me that you need to have had an intention to eat at a particular time, and then you forgot. If you don't have that intention, you can't forget to do it.

every animal handles foods differently. i am pretty certain though, that most rats can handle many kinds of foods, but when you say funyuns it all depends on how many the rat ate. if after a week there doesn't seem to be a difference in his appetite or his poop (color) there is a big chance he wil be fun

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Monday, 15 December 2008 21:57 (seventeen years ago)

i don't want to forget to eat, but yeah, it's like okay, i know i'm hungry, i should eat, what do i eat, where is the food - and then i'm too rushed or busy to answer those questions and get involved in work or whatever too much and then am basically spun out on low blood sugar, yeah, forgetting to eat. which is awful and basically why i have a box of granola bars in my desk. it's easy to forget abt food when it is really not as interesting as other things.

i am not an idle hunter-gatherer, i am a scientist (rrrobyn), Monday, 15 December 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

Ditto.

Sometimes I literally forget to eat, in the "oh man it's already TEN-THIRTY? when did that happen" kind of way. But mostly I'm just too occupied, too far from food, and not hungry enough to take care of business. I don't think this is disordered -- it possibly just says that you either snack a lot or that your body can go a decent while without a real meal.

nabisco, Monday, 15 December 2008 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

One day last week I "forgot" to eat anything until about 8pm, and even then I only ate dinner because it seemed like something I should do.

nabisco, Monday, 15 December 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

what it says is that i am skinny.

xpost

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 15 December 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

yeah for me it's always just a function of being too busy -- not so much "forgetting" as delaying over and over until it suddenly occurs to me i haven't eaten all day. these days this is usually a function of parenting duties.

tipsy mothra, Monday, 15 December 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

xpost - Yeah, living someplace where I remember to eat has already added an inch to my waist size.

nabisco, Monday, 15 December 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

But honestly I think the "remember" in that sentence is faulty -- it's not remembering, half the time it's eating more and more often than my body really demands. (Also drinking like a half-gallon of grapefruit juice a day, I don't think that's helping.)

nabisco, Monday, 15 December 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

I'm only allowed to take my lunch between 12pm and 3pm, and I tend to lean towards the 3pm side. So, when I get really into something I'm working on I forget to eat lunch. This combined with my conscious decision to sleep through breakfast = multiple "forgettings to eat" per week. The more I do it the more my body gets used to it and it's easier to "forget" in the future.

Everyone is a Jedi (Will M.), Monday, 15 December 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

omg thread so long, me so lazy.

i can be anal-retentive about planning things in advance, so if i know i'm going to be working for a long time on a project, i make sure to eat beforehand, or bring a snack, or schedule a break during project time where i can go have a bite to eat and stretch my legs. even if i'm not hungry, thinking about the logistics of mealtime can be distracting when i need to focus on something else, so i just figure it out beforehand and put it out of my mind.

chattanooga xiu xiu (get bent), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 08:57 (seventeen years ago)

today i guess i "forgot" to eat b/c i had a very early breakfast, got on a plane, fell asleep for most of the ride, landed two hours late but gained three hours because of time difference, waited forever at the baggage claim, rode several miles to drop my stuff off at home, and finally ate again at around 7pm pacific time. i should have planned to bring lunch. but i did make a point of eating breakfast when i knew a long stressful day was ahead.

chattanooga xiu xiu (get bent), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 09:03 (seventeen years ago)

also regarding this, with my ADD i need to take breaks... i can never really woodshed uninterrupted for several hours at a time. i start to burn out. so if i can get up and go have a snickers bar, i'll be raring to go when i get back.

I sometimes forget to eat because I'm not hungry.

"I Like My Hogen-Mogen" (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

Since I started working in a restaurant again I very rarely eat actual meals...I just sort of graze/taste all day at work then snack on things when I'm hungry in my free time. Full-on meals are almost an extravagance right now.

"I Like My Hogen-Mogen" (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

I guess there could be a debate though over whether sandwiches count as meals or snacks.

"I Like My Hogen-Mogen" (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

I can't think of a time where me forgetting to eat has been a conscious decision not to eat; it is always because eating is a lower priority to whatever task I'm currently focusing on. I regularly don't each lunch until around 3:30 because of this.

Ca-hoot na na na oh oh (HI DERE), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

Basically, I don't notice I am hungry until:

a) I have finished whatever I was concentrating on; or
b) I get really fucking hungry.

Until one of those two conditions is met, eating is nowhere near my radar.

Ca-hoot na na na oh oh (HI DERE), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

Trayce, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

i never forget to eat, but i'm a bit of a "couple small meals a day" person. example:

- small bowl of granola w/ milk and a coffee.
- a can of chicken soup
- 1/2 two-slice ham sandwich
- salad and an inordinate number of olives
- approximately 6 beers.

that's a typical day.

My roommates are driving me crazy by clearly not forgetting to eat and "forgetting" to do anything about the dishes they leave behind. If I were living alone, I'd do that too, but I feel like the standards are higher when you live with others and it's turning me into a crazy kitchen vigilante constantly choosing between passivity (doing everyone's dishes), passive aggression (selectively leaving them in the sink as long as I can stand), and aggression (wash your damn dishes, people!).

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 21:17 (seventeen years ago)

Just to throw this out there, I don't "forget to eat" per se. It's just that (say) I'll start the day hungry, maybe grab some lunch when it starts to affect my mood, and then decide whether or not to eat dinner based on how I'm feeling when I get home. On average I eat two meals a day, sometimes it's just one with some snacks throughout.
