Hello there. I'm LBZC stalwart and ILX bigdog Dom Passantino, and I will be your invigilator for the 2008 "ILX'S 100 BEST VIDEO GAMES OF ALL TIME". Below is the list of games nominated. No other games can be voted for.
How do you vote? Well... I've decided that 30 seems a decent number of games to vote for. Pick your 30 favourite games from the following list. Arrange them into a 1-30 order, one being your fave, 30 being your, yes, 30th fave. E-mail me at juror 8 @ gmail dot com with your list, stating who you post on ILX as (to save ballot stuffing, although if you'd attempt to stuff an ILX video games poll you need saving), and, heck, if you wanna drop some wisdom on any of the games you voted for feel free.
That is all. Any questions raise them here. Here is your list...

fuck i forgot to nominate darklands! oh well, i'd be the only one voting for it probly

No Ecco, no vote.
― Laurel, Monday, 31 March 2008 21:27 (eighteen years ago)
Not even the other 30, with a respectful blank spot for number 1?
― Z S, Monday, 31 March 2008 21:34 (eighteen years ago)
i have my ballot together but i'm waiting for a definite answer on this street fighter issue.
― Jordan, Monday, 31 March 2008 21:35 (eighteen years ago)
btw Dom, I'd be willing to write a blurb or two when it comes down to the results.
― Z S, Monday, 31 March 2008 21:35 (eighteen years ago)
Oh, I'm pretty sure I can't name 29 video games. I just really like Ecco.
― Laurel, Monday, 31 March 2008 21:35 (eighteen years ago)
No iteration of Street Fighter was nominated.
― HI DERE, Monday, 31 March 2008 21:36 (eighteen years ago)
fuuuuuck, i was faked out by jon's non-nomination:

is Mappy like Qix? that was a classic concept - my idea was to combine that with Tron Cycles
― blueski, Monday, 31 March 2008 21:52 (eighteen years ago)
Mappy involves a police mouse bouncing across colored trampolines while trying to save the Mona Lisa.
― Pleasant Plains, Monday, 31 March 2008 21:59 (eighteen years ago)
my nomination of Lego Star Wars 2 is missing
― blueski, Monday, 31 March 2008 22:04 (eighteen years ago)
Combining pretty much any idea with Tron Cycles would probably be a good idea.

Thanks for doing this, Dom - despite my kvetching about the nomination restrictions (I could easily come up with fifteen missing 80s and 90s games, zero missing 00s ones), this should be fun.
Heads-up - Mario 64 is double-listed with Super Mario 64...
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 31 March 2008 22:18 (eighteen years ago)
One thing that'll make this interesting is voting (or NOT voting) from individual games that represent a larger series or genre of non-nominated things. Ie, I didn't play all that much Turtles In Time, but generally speaking a huge amount of my youth was spent on nearly identical beat-em-ups of the same generation: the double-screen arcade X-Men, Knights of the Round, the Turtles arcade game for that matter, etc etc.
Also: my vote for "King's Quest" includes every King's Quest I-VI, hell, every Space Quest I-V, Quest For Glory I-III, and about twelve other Sierra games. This will probably skew results unfairly (King's Quest I, by itself, would never deserve a slot in my Top 30) but such is the nature of these things...
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 31 March 2008 22:22 (eighteen years ago)
er, voting or not voting FOR individual games. I'm not concerned with the cartridges themselves stuffing the ballots...
nice one Dom, how long we got ?
― Ste, Monday, 31 March 2008 22:23 (eighteen years ago)
king's quest i is impossible.
― Jordan, Monday, 31 March 2008 22:25 (eighteen years ago)
King's Quest I is impossible, and was not tremendously fun then, let alone now. II is sorta interesting if thin - but III is, bullshit climbing challenges aside, a delight. It was in fact the first computer game I remember my Dad bringin home from the store, so I probably am sort of inflating its majesty, but it really was a cool game. IV was also good, probably richer in some ways. V brought in VGA graphics and the mouse and got kind of clunky as a result. VI is worth it mainly for the CD-ROM voices, especially the guy that whines "Old lamps for new!" and the jovial shopkeeper ("Helloooooo, Prince Alex!"). All of these games, along with Monkey Island etc, are WAY WAY WAY more fun, based on my experience, when you play them as a team with your roommate.
(I'd also like to make an early prediction for TETRIS as the winner, not because it's the best game on here, but because its appeal cuts across all categories of gamers and non-gamers alike, ensuring it will be in any honest person's top spread...)
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 31 March 2008 22:28 (eighteen years ago)
i started a thread on ILG.
― Jordan, Monday, 31 March 2008 22:30 (eighteen years ago)
I HAVE VOTED! WOO!!! I guess I'll save exegesis for the blurb thread, but if anyone else wants to join me in bogosifying this, here are some more recommended fudgings: count "Majora's Mask" under "Ocarina of Time," "Sonic The Hedgehog 2" under "Sonic The Hedgehog," and all shareware platformers ever under "Commander Keen" (or at least, Commander Keen 4-6). I know we were supposed to keep sequels as separate noms, but I suspect given the rules for nomination that later posters might have held off on adding, say, Sonic 2, when there was still the pressing need to cover everything else made in the 90s.
The entire enterprise does remind me of that nice little thread, The Greatest (Console) Generation...
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 31 March 2008 23:27 (eighteen years ago)
Dr. Robotniks Bean Machine was a worthy sega competitor to Dr. Mario and Tetris.
But yeah, king's quest should be all of them and same for quest for glory. Monkey's Island 1-4 together also.
Thanks for including my picks, and the idea of choosing 30 games in order is a very good idea.
― CaptainLorax, Monday, 31 March 2008 23:39 (eighteen years ago)
I'm down to 40. Obviously these selections are completely arbitrary, bollocks to appealing to history.
― Noodle Vague, Monday, 31 March 2008 23:41 (eighteen years ago)
Also, check out this site for VGA remakes of the first 2 King's Quest games! http://www.agdinteractive.com/KQ1.php
― CaptainLorax, Monday, 31 March 2008 23:43 (eighteen years ago)
They do a pretty ace job aping the look of those VGA Sierra games - bravo. Those backgrounds must have taken a while.
I do think KQII seems strangely devoid of the little life it possessed without the freakish, acidic look to everything. Wasn't there a purple sky? Or am I making that up?
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 00:06 (eighteen years ago)
IT IS DONE.
― Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 00:12 (eighteen years ago)
I've narrowed mine down to 30, but ranking them is hard.
Only having the first Sonic game is kind of screwed up, it's easily the worst of the first 3 + Sonic CD + & Knuckles.

Hahaha yes!
That pink blob at the bottom of the ladder is two cats that Mappy has distracted with a sprig of catnip. TACTICS.

Jesus, that sinister boss cat got your pixilated television set, and all Mappy can do is mouthbreathe over his fatty cop shoulder.
― Abbott, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 01:57 (eighteen years ago)
I remember renting Mappyland as a kid and being totally perplexed by it - it felt like it was a franchise entry from a nonexistent franchise, like I was supposed to already be familiar with these characters in order to excuse their crappy game. Was I right?
I've decided, unilaterally, that you can kind of count them all as one game under the "sports games don't count as sequels" rule - basically the same exact engine, released in very short intervals, and despite gradual feature creep, essentially the same game. The leap from Sonic to Sonic 2 is pretty big, admittedly. But there's a case to be made for it.
Just noticed another sad omission: Mario Kart 64. :(
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 02:26 (eighteen years ago)
No, the first Mappy game is just as baffling! But Mappyland, yes, it would be like making Burger Time World 3 or something.
― Abbott, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 02:29 (eighteen years ago)
Worse, really - you need a crappier game and a less prominent entry in the series. Like, the equivalent of Mario Golf or Sonic Spinball, but it's, you know, the guy from Spelunker, Deadly Towers, 3-D World-Runner, or Elevator Action.
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

Sad about the Tiger Woods series absence, too. Those things have eaten up at least 1000 hours of my life.

OMG we FORGOT KICK OFF 2!
― Ste, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 08:53 (eighteen years ago)
Mario Kart 64 can be filed under Super Mario Kart. That's where I'm polling it anyway.
― The Wayward Johnny B, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 09:06 (eighteen years ago)
Diddy Kong Racing was better...
― Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 09:10 (eighteen years ago)
I think I'm down to the mid 40's in my choices, hard decisions need to be made...
I see there's some title duplication in the list. I guess you're going to count votes for Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 as being for the same game? What happens if someone votes for both? Does that count as one or two votes? What about when there's a series nomination like say, Monkey Island, and also an individual game from the series nominated as Monkey Island II is? Do they get collated or are they individual votes?
― treefell, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 09:17 (eighteen years ago)
I am going to join the chorus of people who have voted and now feel entitled to complain about the quality of ballot options

Voted for this v.high. Maybe the first video game I ever got properly, "shit three hours have just passed", lost in.
I also regret omitting a certain trackball-operated game that I shovelled shitloads of student grant money into in the late 80s.
It was in my top 15, for reals.

Spindizzy's good, and has way more levels. But each turn, each obstacle, and each required pause in the 6 levels of Marble Madness is ingrained in my mind.

There's no DOOM and you're worried about Quake? I wish there were an easy way to intuitively type/communicate the "Blueaagggh" noises the guys made in DOOM, to convince you of the wrongness of this.

i am done, i will email you soon dom
― Ste, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 14:42 (eighteen years ago)
I think it's just an age thing - Doom was awesome but it was just single player, for me? Whereas Quake was the school computer room - I've never had 12 player deathmatches against people i actually know since...
I can still remember that PC GAMER top 50 list where they put Quake at #2 despite it only existing as a multiplayer demo at the time, they made a really big deal of how **SHOCKWAVES** they were being which i massively bought into at the time. Is there an archive of those top 50 lists anywhere? Mad nostalgia.
― Gravel Puzzleworth, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 15:07 (eighteen years ago)
"zarch/virus zelda" should have a line break before zelda. zarch was an an archimedes game where you controlled a 3D hover ship shoot em up game with 'real gravity' physics with the mouse. Virus was the version that was released on amiga/st maybe pc?
― treefell, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 15:12 (eighteen years ago)
Zarch/Virus: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zarch
― Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 15:13 (eighteen years ago)
I can understand the multiplayer thing totally. For me that would be Duke 3D (also sadly missed on the list), playing in the basement on three PCs with my brother and sister. I even played once with some random person from a BBS, across town on local area code dialup. It was a really different time.
Doom was just such a landmark game in so many ways. I mean, Wolf-3D essentially invented everything we take for granted now in FPSes; right down to Halo, the basic template is in those shareware games. Doom just perfected the formula by opening up the 3D environments considerably, upping the atmosphere, introducing a more clearly "grownup" flavor, adding rocket launchers, etc. It was the first gmae I played that actually spooked me a little. My parents were convinced it was related to anger management problems I was having at school etc, and banned it for a while. It was a big deal.
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 15:16 (eighteen years ago)
Oh I've played Zarch! It wasn't as fun as lander really :(
I think mid 90s FPS kinda suffered in this poll from how other genres threw themselves over a cliff in the mid 90s and they didn't? Loads of people had spare noughties votes for Halo/Half Life/Portal etc.
― Gravel Puzzleworth, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 15:33 (eighteen years ago)
was the trackball game Marble Madness?
Fraid not. I've just realised 720 wasn't a trackball but a weirdy rotational joystick, so I lied to you. I think I only played MM in its Spectrum iteration and I wasn't that into it on that.
― Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

Look, write-ins would have markedly changed my ballot (WoW, Starcraft, Windows Minesweeper, Windows Hearts, Darkstalkers 2: Night Warriors, Soul Calibur II, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Figher 5, Mortal Kombat II, Street Fighter II Turbo, Captain America and the Avengers, Gauntlet, Joust, Dig Dug, Robotron 2084, Donkey Kong Jr, Samba de Amigo, Space Channel 5, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, LOOM, and Golden Axe all would have stood a very good shot of getting mentioned) but they weren't options. I dealt; so can you.

it's not so much games becoming more like films, but more the mechanics of most genres of games changing completely if you remove the 2D movement restriction. This is not always an improvement. e.g. imho, Zelda III > Ocarina of Time.
― caek, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 18:17 (eighteen years ago)
so make a new a ballot! xp
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 18:18 (eighteen years ago)
noms process should really just be a way to get brainstorming and provide a list of stuff ppl like. there is no earthly reason why we should be bound by it; it's completely arbitrary.
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 18:19 (eighteen years ago)
i'm doing write-ins. a very special episode of Full House taught me to always be true to my heart. "bigdog" can strip 'em out if he doesn't like it.

One actual legitimate risk with write-ins is unknowing vote-splitting...right now those who feel that Sonic, generally, needs to be in there, and find no objection to Sonic 1, are going to rally around Sonic The Hedgehog. With write-ins, that energy might be diffused across five different games and no Sonic makes the Top 100.
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 18:24 (eighteen years ago)
Write-ins make the returning officers job much harder.

the question is if SF2 or whatever was such a good game how come no-one nominated it this time?

No one nominated it because JW fucked up his ballot.
― HI DERE, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 19:33 (eighteen years ago)
And because there are more classic games from the late 80s and early 90s than any other era (PROVEN FACT) so all of us had to make really tough decisions for our single 90s nom while making casual coin-tosses for the 00s.

Can we get clarification on "Bust A Move"? There are two games with that name - it's the US name for Taito's Puzzle Bobble, but it's also the Japanese (and European) name for Enix's Bust a Groove. Which is on the list?

I've got my list down to 63, but narrowing further might take me a while. What's a bit scary is the thought that each one of those 63 is a game I've spent at least 2 hours (and sometimes as much as 60, 70...hell, HUNDREDS when it comes to Goldeneye) of my life on.

nonono, drag it out!!!! four posts an hour = coming back to my desk at the end of the day and finding the whole thing already over. :-( It's the equivalent of thinking you've killed all the enemies, going to get a coke, and coming back to find that someone respawned and killed you.

Two questions: When is voting deadline (I'm sure it's in the thread somewhere but not first post), and is it okay I vote for 15 instead of 30?
― emil.y, Saturday, 19 April 2008 18:07 (eighteen years ago)
Deadline is the end of the month, and of course it's OK to submit a shorter than 30 ballot.
― Dom Passantino, Saturday, 19 April 2008 18:10 (eighteen years ago)
Well, I managed to come up with 30 that I'd played and thought at least warranted a few points. It's a bit of an odd list, particularly things like voting for We Love Katamari and not Katamari Damacy, as I have only played the former.

To vote or before the results start?
― Noodle Vague, Saturday, 3 May 2008 08:50 (eighteen years ago)
I didn't vote because my taste in video games is really limited/specific, but here's what my ballot would have been:
1. Super Mario Bros Legend of Zelda Mega Man 2 Metroid Super Mario World Pac Man Baseball Stars Contra Shadow of the Colossus 10. Super Mario Brothers 3 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past Ninja Gaiden Rock Band Guitar Hero Madden NFL series Portal Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Worms Armageddon 20. Katamari Damacy RBI Baseball Skate Half-Life 2 Super Mario Brothers 2 River City Ransom Resident Evil 4 Super Puzzle Fighter Alpha II Turbo Metal Gear Bionic Commando 30. Bubble Bobble
