I was about to say he'll lick any kitty to death but that just opens me up for too many jokes.

Maxwell needs a silver hammer chew toy for his life to be complete, but otherwise he's happy. He's 8 weeks old and his hobbies include peeing, sleeping in my hamper, and chewing toes.

The puppy is a Bichon Frisé and they don't usually get taller than a foot or so - this guy's still got a long way to go, but will always be rather small and cute. My boyfriend's parents had a Bichon Frisé before and we really liked him, so we chose to go for the same breed.

He was totally shocked by what he read. I didn't think I'd have to explain the term fisting quite so soon.

Finefinemusic, can your little puppy become THE OFFICIAL ILX PUPPY?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Sunday, 20 January 2008 18:58 (sixteen years ago) link

You gonna keep giving him the puppy cut or the show-style bichon cut, when he needs grooming in the future?

Abbott, Sunday, 20 January 2008 19:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Neither my boyfriend nor I really are down with the typical Bichon cut, no - we'll probably keep a cut similar to what he's got now as he ages.

I asked him if he'd like to be the official ILX Puppy and he gave me a weird look and then tried to bite my arm, which I assume is a "yes" from him. He's in good company, his best dog friends (aka our friends' dogs) are named Arlo and Dylan.

Good timing for the revive. Mrs. Hurting and I think we want to adopt a dog from a shelter, preferably a puppy or young dog. She has dog experience, I have almost none. She's kind of partial to Jack Russells (we've seen a few available at shelters), but I'm concerned about the energy thing (they're especially spunky). I'd be fine with an ugly mutt - my only concern is that you don't always know how big a mutt will get.

Advice on how to proceed? What to look for? How to prepare? I think we've thought over the decision pretty well. We're not heavy travelers and her work schedule is going to be easy enough that she can do extra walks when I'm busy with school. We have a decent-sized apartment so smallish dog is probably better. I feel ready to deal with the commitment even if it means scaling back some social activities (we're home a lot anyway). Maybe there's a thread on this already but searching "dog" is not highly effective.

Hurting 2, Sunday, 23 March 2008 21:26 (sixteen years ago) link

gr8080, what kind of dog is that?

Melissa W, Sunday, 23 March 2008 21:43 (sixteen years ago) link

hurting, do you own furniture, or nice things? if so, are they all kept in a remote storage facility, or in the apartment? if the answers are "yes" and "the apartment," I would advise against a jack russell.

you can get a decent gauge of a mutt puppy's eventual size by looking at their paws. a female will generally provide for less wear and tear around the house than a male. being a smartypants, I recommend desmond morris' "dogwatching" for a decent education on the bastards.

> best opposite sex (?!)

If the best of breed is a boy-dog, the judges also choose the best bitch and verse-visa.

Oilyrags, Monday, 24 March 2008 13:11 (sixteen years ago) link

i would also advise against a jack russell. they're small, sure, but they require an incredible amount of exercise. you're right to be concerned about their energy levels. i'm far from being an expert but i've walked a few at our local shelter, and it's like having a 15lb rocket on a lead. also, they're not necessarily the most easy-going breed. read the "temperament" section on this page:

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/jackrussellterrier.htm

i don't mean to be down on them, because they're supercute and peppy, but you should be aware of possible problems as a first-time dog owner.

lauren, Monday, 24 March 2008 13:57 (sixteen years ago) link

fiancee has got a jack russell who is probably an anomaly cos he's not a total bastard. they have a lot of energy, but because they're so small, they wear out fast, too, if they're doing some high energy shit like running laps around your living room (maybe that's just him, he will seriously run in loop until (a) he gets tired or (b) someone is quick enough to snatch him up). but otherwise he's pretty even-keeled and can actually catch things in his mouth as opposed to letting toys hit him in the face and then looking at you sideways like wtf i can't eat this shit??

her mother's two jack russells are less nice, tho. one of which is just the loudest dog i've heard, srsly, cannot even sleep in that house, 6 am barking at nothing sessions. think the other one is too fat to be annoying. so based on my super scientific sample, 1 out of 3 jack russells are awes.

Yeah, I helped my wife dogsit a jack russell once. It was a great dog but it didn't seem to have an off switch. I swear I must have thrown the chew toy to it over and over again for an hour straight before I just gave up.

Hurting 2, Monday, 24 March 2008 19:47 (sixteen years ago) link

My wife claims its not that different from any other dog, but I think that's just because she grew up with another really difficult dog that needed tons of exercise and play.

listen hurting if you want a lazy ass dog you might have to go big. people are always reject large dogs because they need a lot of room to run around in. its all lies. our great dane sleeps about 20 hours a day and english bull mastiff i had before that slept about that too.

sunny successor, Monday, 24 March 2008 20:56 (sixteen years ago) link

also, when our great dane finishes eating at her bowl she carries back some biscuits to her bed. i suspect its so she doesnt have to go to all the trouble of standing up to eat if she feels hungry later. i mean, her food bowl is 10 whole feet away from her bed.

Stop putting clothes on dogs!

beyond that, it is always terrible how much dogs hate having their baths. A bit like me! Woaaah!

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 14 April 2008 16:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I hate clothes on dogs. The only exception is when a small puppy is little enough to fit in a footie sock, thus turning it into a papoose kind of thing.

suzy, Monday, 14 April 2008 17:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Dogs on clothes isn't so great either. Have you seen my lint brush?

Oilyrags, Monday, 14 April 2008 17:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I have no beef against little dog clothes on shorthair breeds in the dead of winter when they're taken out for a walk, or against bandanas on Pomeranians. Otherwise, no.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 14 April 2008 17:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Pokemanians?

My sister-in-law ordered her dogs each knitted hoodies from ANTHROPOLOGIE. They also have Sherlock Holmes outfits.

Abbott, Monday, 14 April 2008 17:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, in the winter Toronto just went through, clothes on that puppy were a necessity. That's also the reason we let his fur get so long/poofy. It's been really cold this winter, with snowbanks 2-3 feet high! My poor puppy actually shivered noticeably even with the hoodie on. Also, you don't deny your Grandmother without great-grandkids the chance to clothe/bathe someone in affection, even if it doesn't speak English! Buying Max has put off the "I want great grandkids" discussion for another few years...

Oddly the Bichon next to my mom's place is Maxine.

suzy, Thursday, 29 May 2008 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Apparently Max is a very common name for Bichons! *shrug* Who knew? We named him after the Beatles song after compiling a huge list of names - I was actually rooting for "Killer" but the boyfriend would have none of it :P

The picture wasn't midjump though, he's got this weird trick where he just randomly stands on his hind legs for ten seconds at a time and jumps down again. Such a weird dog.

He's doing well post-surgery! They shaved a bit of one of his legs to put the IV in, so his coat looks extra stupid now :P Poor thing.

We've just moved to an apartment in a triplex with a private backyard, so life is about to get a lot more awesome for the little guy!

Sadly I do have movies.. I've become *that* person. I used to videotape drunken singalongs, now I tape amusing fetch sessions. Sigh. Once we're sorted at home I may upload something to Youtube; can't remember if I actually have a video that's interesting in the slightest.

Ailsa, that's the poodle who knows how to lower power windows in my sis' truck when she uses a drive-through car wash. He looks as if he is mid-nefarious plan in the pic.

two months pass...

hi everybody. here's what happened.

last thursday i was driving in a pretty shitty part of LA (east santa ana) when i saw this stray dog running back and forth across a busy five-lane road. i was surprised because it wasn't really a residential area. i went around the block and i saw that as soon as he made it safely across the street he would run back in the other direction. he was literally zigzagging through SUVs.

anyway i pulled over and ran out into traffic and he ran away from me into some bushes. after about 45 minutes and with the help of 5 or 10 passerby, my girlfriend managed to coax him out of the bushes and into her arms.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4099/4928943154_6e2aaf1036_z.jpg

he's a really beautiful dog and he has neither collar nor microchip. the people at the pound and the animal control officers urged us to take him home, so here we are. he seems really depressed so we wonder if he wasn't trapped in some sort of horrible thing like an underground breeding ring (he still has his balls and seems to not have had much socialization). he basically just sits on our laps with that traumatized look for 10 hours a day. he doesn't like to not be touching one of us and when one of us goes in the shower he stands at the door and whines. he won't walk on a leash anywhere that isn't the inside of my warm, safe, apartment because i think he's scared. he literally shivers with fear when he hears barking dogs. so i am basically starting to feel like i've adopted an infant.

but, there's some progress. he finally started wagging his tail like a real dog on sunday and playing with toys yesterday. at this rate we should have him chasing a stick by 2012 and housebroken by 2015.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/4928963888_de599d9d7b.jpg

so, yeah, life happens. sorry i abandoned my project and sorry if it led to a bit of stress. i still have my notes on my four albums and i think i'll just wait for another turn next week or for the conversation to pick up.

winston burchill (suzy), Thursday, 26 August 2010 16:51 (thirteen years ago) link

his name is santiago de chicharron (santiago the fried pork rind).

we want to get him "fixed" (and "(house)broken", funny juxtaposition of terms) but we don't want to pile trauma on top of trauma so we're consulting with vets about if and when to do it. his behavior is still evolving on a day-to-day basis so we want to give him a bit of time ...

sharkless dick stick (Abbbottt), Thursday, 26 August 2010 20:44 (thirteen years ago) link

Housetraining shouldn't be too traumatic for him if it's done the proper way. In fact, it might give him a routine and a sense of stability because it consists of easily learned behaviors. Whenever we have new dogs in the house I use the Dogstar Daily Errorless Housetraining Method, which works really well. The hard part is getting the dog used to being penned or crated.

(I am sorry for telling you this if you already know this.)

crating pups makes me sad.

not trying to open debate on the crating issue but man i've seen a few neglected doggies in crates and it just braeks my <3 ;__;

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 26 August 2010 20:50 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, crating him makes me sad too but i don't have a whole lot of options right now. we're moving this month from an apartment to a house with a secluded, fenced backyard so hopefully he can chill there while we're at work, and then when we're potty trained he can just hang wherever he likes.

he's certainly not neglected when we're not at work. all he wants to do is curl up and chill next to us on the couch or bed. he hasn't barked yet - though he whines a little bit - and he loves to be held like a baby and carried around. he's basically just a little stuffed animal, all he wants is to be loved.

his main problem with potty is that he's so scared of the universe that he refuses to go outside. he will literally hold it outside until he gets inside. part of the problem is that i live in a part of san diego that has a really high concentration of unmarried couples (young and same-sex) so there are a million and one dogs. literally you can't stand outside our place in the afternoon for five minutes without a dog passing by.

anyway the good news is that he's so small that it's not really a big deal when he drops the cosbys inside. there's a maltese poodle in our complex who is about half his size and that's complicating the issue. it's just a little embarrassing because i'm constantly carrying out little piss-soaked towels and bags of poop to bury in the yard in the hopes that he'll start to think it's part of his territory. on the other hand, maybe he'll think it's a big game?

oh, and judging by the teeth it seems like he's a little more than three years old.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 26 August 2010 22:59 (thirteen years ago) link

FWIW my dog is a totally afraid of the world-type dog (we got her from a shelter) and she seems to really love her crate. We only put her in there when we're gone, but she goes in there of her own accord whenever she is feeling freaked out. Maybe she used to live with someone who had her in a crate, I don't know, but it really seems to comfort her when she's scared.

yeah Henry really digs his crate - if you approach it the right way it doesn't have to be a prison or anything, more of a sanctuary really. key part here is to never ever use the crate as a time out or bad dog training substitute, that will fuck it up for sure.

yeah, i mean half the time when we are on the bed the little dude all the way under the down comforter digging in circles and rearranging it to make himself a little cave sit in, which if you think about it, is sort of what a doghouse is, and a crate is basically just a portable doghouse with a lockable door on it. we always put a bunch of toys and snuggly fabric pieces and treats in there with him and i think he just thinks of it as a safe place to chill where he's out of sight of predators or whatnot.

Oh wow, she's lovely. Collie/bassett? Even close?

yeah Henry really digs his crate - if you approach it the right way it doesn't have to be a prison or anything, more of a sanctuary really. key part here is to never ever use the crate as a time out or bad dog training substitute, that will fuck it up for sure.

We had a six-month American Pit Bull here for a week once who was going to a rescue in Sweden, and she was so well crate trained that she took all her meals in her crate, slept in it, and would climb into it by herself when she just wanted to groom herself and get away from it all. This all paid off in spades when I had to bring her to the airport, and while other dogs who weren't used to crates were freaking out around her in the cargo lounge, she just lay down in her crate and went to sleep.

The thing I took away from the toilet training regime described on that site is not so much the crating as the toileting on command. I was amazed that it could actually work.

So happy for moonship's dog now though. He probably never imagined he'd have such a nice place to live (not that I really think dogs are like Oliver or Annie or anything).

trishyb, Friday, 27 August 2010 07:19 (thirteen years ago) link

We think she is border collie and corgi. The vet thought part basset hound, but she never seems interested in *smells* like a hound is. Also she lookjs like other border collie/corgis I have found pics of on the internet, like this one:

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 27 August 2010 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link

i am v glad to be schooled on positive uses of crating bc my perceptions have been negative. for ex, i knew a beautiful keeshond whose owners would use the crate as punishment and the poor thing would just go crazy in there and chew on himself. just awful.

another dog -- whippet/pit mix owned by a friend -- gets horrible separation anxiety and is v destructive if alone & crated, so i always associated the crate to a prison for her misbehaviour. but it's good to know that being in the crate may actually provide a sense of security when she is alone!

tangelo amour (elmo argonaut), Friday, 27 August 2010 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

got up early, took santi outside for potty. santi refused to potty, came inside, with 30 seconds promptly pottied on floor. conversation on drive to work: how we wished he'd hurry up.

got home early from work today. took santi outside for potty, fully expecting no results. santi immediately potties. right where i buried his poop the other night.

we freak out, heap praise on santi. tail wags like nuts. i pick santi up. santi promptly sprouts massive erection and ejaculates on my shirt.

moral of story: be careful what you wish for.

Grew up with a basset hound down the street from me, belonged to a lovely retired ambulance driver...his name was Boof and he was the sweetest dude ever. Poor Boof got old and slow and got hit by a car though, ;_; But I've loved hounds ever since

The one and only drawback of getting a rescue dog is not knowing what the dog looked like in its v wee lil puppy days. I like to tell my dog how hyper and cute she must have been.

Looking Man (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 13:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Some people in another county adopted a dog that we had when it was a very small puppy. They were so happy when we mailed them pictures of him when he was four weeks old. And we were so happy to see how he has grown up.

Meet Teufel, a a 5 month old puppy I adopted today. His mother was a Schnauzer-mix found with a litter of 9 amongst some PVC waste in December.

http://i52.tinypic.com/npg9kw.gif

He's got a lovely (and hopefully non-shedding) brindle wiry coat, already follows me around like a magnet, came housetrained from the rescue group, and hasn't barked or whimpered once. He's a GOOD boy.

light...sweet...crude (Sanpaku), Saturday, 26 March 2011 21:15 (thirteen years ago) link

That's a handsome fella. Any idea how large he's going to get?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 26 March 2011 21:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Teufel's probably going to be 45 lbs, 18 inches at the shoulder. He's already 2/3's there by weight/volume. Medium size. I lived with 3 toy/miniature size dogs, and they couldn't handle walking 3 miles around the neighborhood, much less joining me hiking.

What's remarkable is how gentle he is amongst all the yapping dogs baying for attention when I adopted him. He's figured out the dog doors in about 30 seconds (the miniature dogs took 5 days).

⚓ (gr8080), Sunday, 30 October 2011 03:51 (twelve years ago) link

simon is in hella recovery stage...he's anemic right now b/c he had so many ticks taking his blood, plus he's got a kidney stone which cannot be operated upon until his anemia is gone. thankfully the kidney stone is super tiny and may not even require surgery (best case scenario) but he has to eat specialty food that's low in calcium and high on makes-you-pee. which means other doggy cannot eat this.

this is pissing other doggy off SO MUCH because now we have to do separate feeding sessions instead of free feeding like has been doing and he is freaking the fuck out that he cant have this special food (bc eating it will make him sick). so instead the motherfucker wont eat his own goddamn food. its like, you fucking asshole, you would rather starve to death than deal with a lil gustatory monotony? FUCK YOU.

3 more hours til I see his waggy little tail.

Does any other dog that y'all have do a kind of breathy panting thing when you rub him? Max goes whole hog, it's pretty funny. Hard to describe over text, sadly. But it's so intense and adorable.

my inlaws had a mastiff (he died last year, sad sad sad) but he was about as big as that first photo and I swear a week later he was up to my knee. Those big doggies grow like freaking mushrooms!

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

I'm familiar with the health issues of French bulldogs (along with all other breeds I might consider - but really how many breeds are there that don't have some sort of significant health or other issue?), I'm just curious about what sort of time, money, and energy is needed in actually raising a dog.

EDB, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 22:24 (twelve years ago) link

time = not quite comparable to a child but getting there

money = so, so much money. like $1000/yr or more

energy = actually find dogs give you energy rather than the reverse

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 22:31 (twelve years ago) link

i guess the difference between my dog and a child is i can leave him at home unsupervised, but when i am with him it is like having a toddler around who has no hands.

the money thing might be on the high side, i tend to pay out the nose for medical expenses cause i'm a sucker (it's not good enough to remove weird bumps, i have to get them biopsied too) but then again i don't pay any kennel fees and some of my friends pay like $20/day because they don't want their little buddies sitting bored at home all day by themselves

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 22:34 (twelve years ago) link

see I'm not willing to get a dog til a) at least one of us can be at home with it and b) we have a big enough backyard for running and frollicking. which sounds more and more like a crazy utopian dream

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 22:35 (twelve years ago) link

if you get a little enough dog you don't need a big backyard, but yeah, leaving them at home by themselves is so ;_;

i guess at one extreme there are people who get like chemo and organ transplants and super-expensive doggy day care for their dogs and at the other extreme there's probably people who spend $0 on their dogs, just tie 'em up w/ a rope and feed them leftover human food

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 22:38 (twelve years ago) link

I kinda like a big dog, myself. Tiny dogs don't do it for me. My MIL has a shihtzu and it'll stealth up next to me on the couch and start licking my hand like a little creep. She's cute and all, but just so spazzy and needy and weird. Like an adult baby.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 22:41 (twelve years ago) link

yeah when i say dogs are like toddlers maybe it's because i have a little dog, any time he sees me sit down he automatically runs over to try to get on my lap

but that's what you want a dog for IMO

the late great, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 22:43 (twelve years ago) link

I curse my chosen profession for my doglessness

catbus otm (gbx), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 23:07 (twelve years ago) link

My MIL was such a total pushover when it came to training, I think was what happened to the shihtzu. The dog wouldn't eat out of a bowl as a puppy so now there's a kitchen towel with kibble on it on the floor for her, she won't eat if you standing nearby, she won't eat if it's this food, she won't eat if it's that food, it's just so ridiculous to me...in their old house, in addition to leaving food on the floor, they also used to leave a little pile of kibble for her on the couch, in case she wanted to eat. I felt like a crabby old farmer, RAGH JUST PUT THE FOOD IN A FARKIN BOWL SHE'LL EAT WHEN SHE GETS HUNGRY

My pupster went through about 5 of my pillows and 3 of his dog beds, but he finally stopped evicerating the cushioning hereabouts around his first birthday. k9ballistics makes some pretty chew resistant dog beds, if that's what we're seeing (they discontinued a indoor/outdoor cot that I got).

Every time I see a picture like the one above with the pillows all gored, or see people asking for donations to cover their $10,000 dog surgery, it's like "I can't handle this shit!"

At the same time, it's not like I haven't just started a phd where I'll be on my own schedule and in the same place for the next 6-8 years. And it's not like I haven't just moved into an apartment with a backyard and an unused room connected to mine, and which is 2 minutes from a dog park.

The more serious I get, the more I get cold feet.

Originating on the continent of Africa,[13] basenji-like dogs have lived with humans for thousands of years. Dogs resembling modern Basenjis can be seen on stelae in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs, sitting at the feet of their masters, looking just as they do today, with pricked ears and tightly curled tails. Dogs of this type were originally kept for hunting small game by coursing.

Seriously. When I inform people that Ken is 15, they look around anxiously like we're just sitting here, waiting for the dog ambulance because he shakes like most sighthounds do, takes a daily pill for dog arthritis - but is in really good shape. He could be nearer 16, because his age was estimated at 12-18 months when he was adopted as a rescue in late '98.

He is unusually amenable to being photographed, and has the most gorgeous, long paws:

Awesome! more new(ish) husky owners, she looks great, how old?

tsrobodo, Monday, 12 August 2013 22:12 (ten years ago) link

I know right??? She still has dog breath tho but I love to bury my face in the angora scruff on the back of her neck and inhale xp

The rescue group (n0rsled) thinks she is 1.5-2yrs? She is our first husky...and our first dog! But she seems to have unusually good manners and has between so well behaved the last 2 days we spent alone with her (she is being kenneled by n0rsled bc we haven't signed our pet lease yet).

just1n3, Monday, 12 August 2013 22:15 (ten years ago) link

Her original owner almost beat her to death (broken back, broken ribs, punctured lungs, broken teeth, fractured jaw, to name a few of the injuries), n0rsled rehabbed her and rehomed get but it only lasted 6mths - she was left unattended with their elderly small dog and she pretty brutally attacked it, so they surrendered her back to n0rsled.

Her name is neko btw

Frustrating to think how many stupendously shitty dog owners there are in this world.
1.5 looks about right though I probably would have guessed younger. Wish I was brave enough to go for a rescue for my first dog, and really hope things go well with Neko. Max came from a breeder across the street from my dads. Used to play with her original breeding pair when we were kids.

His parents both have a fair bit of brown but he only really has it on the ears, they're known to change colour though he hasn't really got any darker so far.

tsrobodo, Monday, 12 August 2013 23:33 (ten years ago) link

Shedding has begun but the furminator has been a lifesaver. Only real issue is the way his fur sticks in my nappy ass hair.

tsrobodo, Monday, 12 August 2013 23:38 (ten years ago) link

Oh and the inexplicable peeing on my bed. knows not to go anywhere in the house but if I leave my room for 10 seconds he will be up on there murdering my mattress.

tsrobodo, Monday, 12 August 2013 23:40 (ten years ago) link

I read (last week, when my dog peed in my bed) that they do that because they're scared & want to bury their scent with yours. In my Doug's case, he's become too attached to me being home all the time and then I took him to grandma's house for a week and she & I went out, leaving him there for a few hours. Got back to a smelly bed. :(

I love Neko :)

Yeah that makes sense seeing as he's also done it in one of my shoes, trying to get a bit of a headstart on separation anxiety before he's older but he still hows like a werewolf on helium when alone.

tsrobodo, Monday, 12 August 2013 23:56 (ten years ago) link

I was wondering about the furminator - a guy at the adoption didn't recommend it, but I know that it gets rave reviews.

For us, there was never any other option than rescue - it's just something we both feel really strongly about - and we are fortunate that there are so many breed-specific rescue groups in the bay area. We knew we def wanted either a malamute, husky or mix.

Neko has brown eyes, really big paws and a bushy tail so probably a bit of malamute in there, I would guess.

estela, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 00:35 (ten years ago) link

Vet said it's fine as long as it's not used on knotted or wet fur.

Yeah I completely get that and still wonder if I did the right thing. But then I think about how nervy the first two weeks were and don't think I'd be willing to try again if something had gone wrong with a rescue

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 01:17 (ten years ago) link

We weren't keen on going through a shelter or pound bc we would have been too nervous as well - in that environment it's hard for the staff to really know the true personality of the dog (we saw this play out with my in-laws but it all worked out for them in the end).

Because this is our first dog, because we rent, and because we wanted a breed that happens to be known for being quite stubborn and a bit of a handful, it was important for us to go through a rescue group who fosters the dogs out so their personalities come out and they can really match the dog to the right owner.

Right now they have a husky called solo who is SO ADORABLE but omg - so naughty! We were at an adoption fair and we watched this dog,.annoyed she wasnt getting enough attention, slowly and deliberately grab the corner of the tablecloth on the merch table and yank the whole thing off. I almost cried laughing so hard, but can you imagine how much work she is??

just1n3, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 01:34 (ten years ago) link

That makes a lot of sense, hadn't even realise that there were such fostering schemes but looking back my knowledge of rescue centres was pretty rudimentary up until recently.

Solo sounds awesome but then I think that stubbornness and mischief making is one of the more endearing things about huskies. Of course you want to weed out destructive behaviour but I like the idea of a dog that has its own ideas about how things should be done, that way convincing em to do what you want becomes a kind of game where you have to keep thinking of new ways to outsmart them (If we were keeping score I'd probably be losing badly).

Have you given any thought to whether or not you'll let her off lead?

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 02:18 (ten years ago) link

the off-leash thing is something we'll need to figure out. we have plans to put her/ourselves through a local training school that has a really good rep with nordic breeds. i know that some people believe huskies should never be off-leash in unfenced areas bc their instinct to wander is so strong. i don't think it's something we'll even consider till we've gone through the classes and had her at least a few months, and then we'll discuss it with the n0rsled people (they run a regular husky club meetup which is gonna be a great resource for us). neko's safety is my number one concern, and i don't want to risk her wandering off and getting lost or stolen or hit by a car - or attacking someone's small dog while they're out walking.

just1n3, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 03:13 (ten years ago) link

solo IS awesome - but definitely not the right dog for a first-time husky owner, let alone a first-time dog owner.

just1n3, Tuesday, 13 August 2013 03:16 (ten years ago) link

fwiw have definitely had some terrifying never-gonna-see-that-dog-again moments involving a beloved husky and the great outdoors. dude always came back eventually but it was def on his clock and like "hey guys what's up boy you sure were shouting a lot huh?"

resulting post (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 13 August 2013 03:21 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I'm trying to canvass as much opinion as possible to get a general idea of why people decide either way. A few owners I met have said never, the behavioural specialist at the vet has two huskies and an Akita that are completely fine off the leash but she's practically a drill sergeant with them and I don't think I can (or would even want to) emulate that. The trainer I'm in contact with said he's never come across a husky that was incapable of being trained to always respond to recall, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

But then I guess the horror stories always ring the loudest in your head and the dogs safety is paramount. Norsled sounds like a really great organisation so I doubt they'd lead you astray in that regard.

estela, Sunday, 18 August 2013 06:11 (ten years ago) link

yes i AM taking some satisfaction in knowing that getting new tenants is going to be way more stressful for her than just downloading and printing off a fucking pet lease agreement for us to sign (fyi we have been here about 3 years and never caused a problem). we made a tough call tonight after much discussion about what's best for us and also best for neko - we called our person at n0rsled and informed her of the situation, and said that we think she should start showing neko to other families, just in case we can't come through with a new place in the next month. she REALLY wants neko to go to us, even though this is the most adoptable dog ever (young, great manners, never ever barks), so she wants this to work out for us and is willing to help as much as possible.

fingers crossed we find something in the next week or two :/

We finally got neko, but despite being house trained she keeps shitting & pissing at my work - always in the same spot (concrete, if it matters), even though I keep bleaching it AND I keep taking her out regularly. :/

just1n3, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 21:34 (ten years ago) link

Weird, I wonder if she got used to going on concrete when she first started training? I know my dog was trained on snow, and had a hell of a time when spring came around. Maybe she thinks concrete = "outside" :(

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 23:03 (ten years ago) link

You could try keeping a bell near your door at home, and ringing it when you take her outside. I don't know if Your work setup would allow, but maybe you could also set up a bell at the door, or keep one in your pocket? That way, after a few trips, she will equate the bell with the act of going outside and it may help her understand?

Got a strict no getting on beds policy with Max which is a shame but ultimately unavoidable(the only way I can be sure he wont pee on them, don't know why he still does this), was told Huskies can be very obstinate when it comes to beds if they develop attachments to them so that makes sense.

tsrobodo, Saturday, 12 October 2013 19:23 (ten years ago) link

yeah she has a weird relationship to beds - before we brought her home, when we would spend weekends with her, we once brought her back to our old place and she was totally chill till she saw the bed then she went NUTS. it was the first time and it totally freaked me out!!

now i know it's playful dominance (her tail always wags but there's def a vibe of "look who's boss" going on). we have a night time routine where she is led in quietly at bedtime and she goes straight to her own bed, and never tries to get in with us during the night, but once she knows we're awake in the morning...

*warning: i'm going to talk about poop a lot*

yeah, the training process has been a rollercoaster. we got her about 3 weeks ago from a shelter, so she's not housetrained. we weren't able to take her outside for the first week that we had her because she hadn't had all of her vaccinations, but she was really good at using the puppy pads. i was amazed at how quickly she picked it up - only a few accidents elsewhere in the apartment. the transition to going outside started with some promise. within 2 days she was taking a piss outside within a few minutes of going outside, and on the 3rd day - similar in spiritual power to jesus being resurrected - she took a giant dump outside. i was so proud. she was still using the puppy pads in the apartment, but generally the trend was in the right direction.

then this week happened. she just stopped refusing to piss or shit outside. i would take her back in within 10 minutes, assuming that she didn't have to go, and then as soon as she got inside she'd go on the pad. grrrrrrr. OR, especially when i knew she had to go, i would wait fucking forever, like 30-40 minutes, for her to go. she would get really feisty and start straining at her leash to run inside, and then finally go when she couldn't wait a second longer. this has been going on all week, getting worse and worse.

i can understand the difficulty of the transition, but i don't get why she was able to get it immediately the first week, and then suddenly reverted back to refusing to go to the bathroom outside. whenever she successfully did it during the first week, we showered with her praise and tons of treats, everything you're supposed to do. i dunno. i guess in the grand scheme of things it's only been a few weeks and i'm sure she'll get it within a few months. but it's really frustrating right now, and plus i wanted to take this opportunity to write a really long post about pooping.

Karl Malone, Friday, 17 October 2014 00:43 (nine years ago) link

Bird is adorable!

About your situation, though--I dunno. I'd always go for positive reinforcement over negative (rubbing her nose in the mess and shouting "What's this?!"), but it sounds like you've done everything you're supposed to re: positive. Like you said, though, she's still new to your family, so give it time.

MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Friday, 17 October 2014 00:55 (nine years ago) link

re: reinforcement - yeah, we're trying to just do positive and not do the shaming thing too much, although when on occasion she takes a giant piss in the bedroom it's hard not to be like "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS BIRD? ONLY I AM ALLOWED TO PISS ALL OVER MY BEDROOM!!"

i guess one really annoying thing is that we live on the 6th floor and typically use an elevator which takes forever, so "going outside" is typically a really long process as compared to the suburban thing of letting your dog out the back door into your yard or whatever. when you do all of that and then wait outside for 30 minutes and then take her in and she immediately shits on a pad, it's really frustrating.

Karl Malone, Friday, 17 October 2014 00:59 (nine years ago) link

anyway i complain because i'm a complainer and also because she's 99% a perfect pup, so the housetraining journey sticks out. love her so much.

Karl Malone, Friday, 17 October 2014 01:00 (nine years ago) link

eh don't stress about it. neko was 2 yo when we got her and house-trained. never peed in our apartment. then i took her work and she would just pee and shit on the concrete floor. pretty soon i figured out the times she likes to go out (she lets me know now anyway, but when we first got her, she wouldn't). a few months went by, she was all good, then she just decides to start pissing on the floor at work again! it stopped, thankfully. probably just her way of making sure that i know who's really the boss.

and if birdie is going on a pee pad, that's still pretty good. and dog pee is mostly odorless. there is also a spray you can get to encourage them to go while they're outside, but it didn't really work for us (neither did the repellent spray, either).

Don't know what the weather's doing in Karl's part of the world, but sometime pups that pick up being house-trained fast have a big lapse if the weather turns cold or wet--they want to be obedient, but not as much as they want to stay warm and dry.

We had several possible names lined up, and Em was lobbying heavily for Beau. She's tried every trick in the book with Nora, but Nora is insistent on Freddie. You can't overrule a 2 year old. It'd be like the Blue Peter cats fiasco.

Lots of Fred pics on my instagram, but this update is not what anyone wanted; tomorrow we're rehoming him, sadly.

Em's due our second child in approx 6 weeks, and it's been a much more difficult pregnancy than last time, compounded by having a lovely, but slightly stubborn, pup in the house to manage alongside a just-turned-three-year-old.

So after much deliberation and many tears we've decided to take him back to the breeder so she can rehome him. We're gutted, and it caused a big bust-up with my father-in-law because he laid a massive guilt-trip on (when we already felt guilty, right before xmas, when his daughter's heavily pregnant).

Fred's a lovely dog - basically E's dream dog - but it's just not the right time for us.

So this is me saying goodbye to Fred.

Douglas had a very rough week. Two days of explosive diarrhea, vomiting, severe dehydration and then major surgery to have a sock removed from his small intestine. I was in tears on tuesday night, seriously thought he was fading away. My local private vets were fucking shit and actually ruled out a blockage on monday, maybe just trying to monetize his agony and charge me for another consultation rather than gaf about his life. Anyway Bradford PDSA delivered and I've donated £150 to them for being so fucking awesome and saving his life.

the labrador appetite is a thing to behold

We fostered a young black lab for a few months, and he managed to eat the best part of a 12 kg bag of dog food. Like, he just rammed that stuff down his gullet double-quick until he was completely misshapen. We had a trip to the vets at 11pm on a bank holiday. He was so stuffed with food, she was afraid it would rot inside him before he could break it down. So she knocked him out and manually worked that food through his system. Liquid paraffin poured in one end, literal punching of his stomach to work it into the food, then out the other end it came. It took an hour to clear him. We had to sleep in the living room with the back door open so he could continue the process.

Next morning, he was STARVING. You never met such a hungry dog in your life.

trishyb, Saturday, 23 February 2019 10:08 (five years ago) link

not really funny for the dog .. but lool! There is something quite comic about their grim obsession with food. My last Lab used to plot raids on the bin. He'd always be watching what went in and mount a knock the bin over and grab and run raid later. Obv this decreased in frequency as he got older, but the old dog still had a few tricks in him.

i took this one a lot harder. partly because i thought we had more time with him and had far less time to prepare for his passing than the other one. partly because i picked him out when we first got him and spent the lion's share of time with him. he could be a difficult dog at times; he was a shelter rescue and he was big on chewing stuff he wasn't supposed to and pissing in the house all the time when we weren't home. but he was also very loving and protective.

he's a bit depressed with the new low sock access regime, the intestine recovery rations he's on, lack of off the lead action and the elizabethan head-piece is inflicting psychological duress. I'd like to think the brush with death has instilled a new sense of maturity in him, but as soon as the stitches come out on wednesday he'll be back to his best/worst in no time I reckon, but thank god tbh.

Doug is so beautiful. Black labs are my favourite. Does he like to greet people by putting their arms in his mouth? We had a black lab who did that. Not everyone likes that, we discovered.

Labs are such easy dogs to have if you are under stress. When I had anxiety my lab mix used to lie down next to me so I could feel how calm he was. Only problem with them is that they WILL eat anything, including - ick - a tray of pasta in the alley that has maggots. They're smart dogs so it just must be hard-wired into them to put any and all food into their mouths.

" Black labs are my favourite. Does he like to greet people by putting their arms in his mouth? We had a black lab who did that. Not everyone likes that, we discovered."

yep, not biting but excitedly getting hands, arms, sleeves of coats in his mouth in his excitement, and he repeatedly jumps up at people - which is not good when he is covered in mud or the unfortunate person has recently had a hip replacement or just doesn't like that type of thing! He is calming down a bit and getting more wary about strangers, but still often starts hyperventilating when he meets other dogs or people sometimes, get's crazy excited. He will literally eat anything hence the need for a muzzle off the lead. I've stopped going to to one local park because some twisted psychopath from the rugby has been putting poisoned food around the pitch again

global tetrahedron, Monday, 14 October 2019 17:15 (four years ago) link

I'd recommend getting some pressed rawhide bones, they can chew them for hours and it might help him chill if he's showing anxiety and prevent other things getting chewed.

xp to trish

just remembered the day my postman, who is a fan of Douglas came to say hello and ended up with his hand in a big cavernous labbie mouth, and when get got his hand back there was a huge globule of saliva dangling off his wrist..

calzino, Monday, 14 October 2019 17:43 (four years ago) link

No! Not rawhide! The rawhide doesn’t digest, is often made by bleaching said rawhide and comes from very unethical places. Plus I see a rawhide veterinary horror story just about every day online. You’re best off getting raw bones from a butcher (I get beef rib bones for Wilf when he stays).

coup de twat (suzy), Monday, 14 October 2019 17:46 (four years ago) link

shit I didn't realise there were so many blockages caused by rawhide bones. The ones I get are quite expensive and from a reputable online seller, and I thought they were just basically very chewy protein. oh well!

xp to Calzino: Those things can splinter if the dog crunches too hard on them, so they're not great for very chompy dogs. We're fine because we've got two weak-mouthed dogs and one Jack Russell who is mighty and strong but small.

Yes, an old housemate of mine used to call our labrador Lord Crustynosebridge because he always had a big dried flob across his muzzle. So debonair!

trishyb, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:38 (four years ago) link

I've just been reading that you should avoid white rawhide dog chews because they are the ones that are likely to have had extensive chemical treatment. The ones I get are a yellow ochre colour and don't stink like crap, so I feel a little bit better now. But the choke hazard is obv not good.

calzino, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:41 (four years ago) link

xp and when they shake that head - duck and cover!

calzino, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:43 (four years ago) link

I had a 70 lb boxer and he did pretty well on bully sticks, but he also had little dolphin teeth. He would just snap almost everything else in bits and then swallow them whole so never touched rawhide.

Yerac, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:48 (four years ago) link

Bones from an actual butcher. If they’re not giving them away outright, they will cost pennies, and not be origin-suspect like those from Poundland (also: raw every time). Get a bunch and lob them in the freezer. That’ll do for any germs and your dog will be BUSY for at least three hours.

god, those first few months with my puppy Bird were so hectic. she was afraid to go in the hallway, let alone down the elevator and down to the loud streets. so were on puppy pads in the corner by the front door for waaaaay too long

Karl Malone, Thursday, 1 July 2021 17:47 (two years ago) link

My two labs both housetrained rather quickly. I don't know if I got just lucky, or if its just something they pick up quickly when they have easy access to the outdoors (an apartment would understandably be different).

edited for dog profanity (cryptosicko), Thursday, 1 July 2021 17:51 (two years ago) link

my favorite part was this one terrible night when Bird had diarrhea and had to go several times, every hour or so. each time, we had to press the button for the elevator and wait an excruciating minute as she whined loudly in the apartment building's hallways, then fight her fears to get outside, and then she'd immediately take a crazy messy dump all over the sidewalk right in front of this one guy who was always there, always smoking a cigarette, and always looking incredibly angry at me. i saw him like 3 times that night

Karl Malone, Thursday, 1 July 2021 17:57 (two years ago) link

He's been about 50/50 with the washroom so far. It's exasperating when I've got him outside for 20-30 minutes, then he decides to go the second we get in. He's been pretty good in the car for short trips, though (the aforementioned family dog could not handle the car), and I've even been able to leave him in there for a minute or two--no longer--while I run in to get something. When I've gotten back, he's still sitting calmly.

clemenza, Thursday, 1 July 2021 18:48 (two years ago) link

sometimes when your dog has got the squits it's as hard work as bringing up baby, as in getting awaken every couple of hours and dealing with lots of messy stuff. Only changing nappies is a hell of a lot easier than scooping up diarrhoea. Although a few times if there is no-one about I've carried on walking and say to myself in a Wenger accent: I did not get a clear view of zis incident so I cannot possibly comment on it!

calzino, Thursday, 1 July 2021 18:48 (two years ago) link

god, those first few months

Months? Months? I've been thinking in terms of two-three weeks...profoundly off the mark, I take it.

clemenza, Thursday, 1 July 2021 18:52 (two years ago) link

It varies. Lucinda, my oldest lab, got comfortable with our schedule within a matter of weeks, in terms of sleeping when we did and things like that. Molly, who we got five years later, would regularly refuse to sleep through the night for maybe up to a month. I should note, perhaps encouragingly, that we were operating with a far more flexible work/life schedule when we got Lucinda, whereas with Molly we were both at work or school for long periods of time and thus had less time to spend on training and socializing. Given that, I'm assuming, your current situation affords you a lot of time to spend with Fredo, you might have an easier time with getting him adjusted.

This may not be an option at the moment, but have you considered signing up for puppy training at Petsmart or one of those places? It really helped with us in terms of housetraining, getting them to behave (somewhat) on walks, etc. It also helps them become more comfortable around other dogs.

edited for dog profanity (cryptosicko), Thursday, 1 July 2021 19:02 (two years ago) link

I'm already enrolled for a session on July 10. One disadvantage I think I have that you and KM didn't is that I'm on my own. It really does become kind of an extended Whatever Happened to Baby Jane mind game...I'm over-dramatizing. Zillions of people have done this; anyone with any knowledge would look at my first day and say I had it pretty easy. The problem is me--I'm the one with the daunting adjustment.

clemenza, Thursday, 1 July 2021 19:10 (two years ago) link

xp ok maybe more like 2 months? maybe even 7 weeks or so...I'm not sure, i lost my mind somewhere back in those piled up puppy pads. so much of it was just dealing with her fear issues around the time - she was a shelter pup and pretty much any noise at all would scare the crap out of her, and we lived brooklyn, so.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 1 July 2021 19:24 (two years ago) link

Widget is now eight months old and finds new and innovative ways to destroy things. Today’s fun was digging up two massive, newly planted herb pots on my balcony. His specialty is gnawing the corner of a throw pillow cover just enough that it can’t be repaired. Woe betide you if you resort to spraying apple cider vinegar on an object as whiplet repellent - he advances, barking, because he hates it. He can now reach the countertops in the kitchen so everything has to be put away (no bad thing). Whippet puppies have a reputation for being dickheads until they’re two, which he definitely can be, but he has been easy to housetrain, loves riding the Tube and bus, is well-mannered with people and other dogs and his default setting is asleep right next to me.

calzino, Thursday, 1 July 2021 22:29 (two years ago) link

The problem is me--I'm the one with the daunting adjustment.

It's tough to have dogs if you're a loner, because you either have to jump in at the deep end and get them socialized with other dogs and kids and all the things they could possibly have a negative reaction to, or you have to keep them away from those things FOREVER, which is then an absolute pain for anyone else who might ever have to look after them.

I used to know a guy who had a giant schnauzer. He never, ever spent a night away from this dog, in six years. He never let anyone else walk it. He never let the dog out of his sight. Then he slipped a disc and couldn't walk or move off the sofa for two weeks, and the poor dog nearly went crazy because it was too scared to let anyone else take it out or do anything with it.

trishyb, Friday, 2 July 2021 08:41 (two years ago) link

That's exactly the situation I want to avoid; I want him socialized around other people and other dogs, and I want him to be comfortable with others watching him when need be.

I'm alone but definitely not (probably everyone says this) a loner. A bit more so since I moved out of the city in late 2019, but I'm always out and about. That's the adjustment: not being able to just head out. Pre-pandemic, I'd go see one-three movies a week. I constantly just head out to browse book or record or thrift stores. Going out to have coffee and read. Going back to the city to see friends (a two-hour drive). All of it breaks up the day, being retired. Right now, the day is 60 hours long, and I can't, till he's okay with alone time, do any of that. And then, come September, I'm supposed to go back to occasional substitute teaching, 50 days over the school year.

I know: "You didn't think of this ahead of time?" I did--I figured if I got it first day of the summer break, after a few weeks he'd be fine. I'm probably just prematurely over-worrying.

clemenza, Friday, 2 July 2021 12:41 (two years ago) link

Sounds like you're doing the most important thing, which is getting him used to the car.

Have you heard of the magic blanket technique for getting dogs to settle? It seems to be the hot thing in dog training at the moment, and might be useful for you if you have to leave him in other places like a sitter's house, or if you take him with you to a cafe or restaurant and just want him to hang out and be happy without your constant attention.
