I am here for 3 months and it is awesome! Sure, I'm sharing a house with about 25 people and eating pasta all the time because student housing's fucking expensive...but it's just great how everyone speaks English (I came from Turkey) and there's lots of museums and bookstores and music and nightlife. It's good times. So what do you like and hate in Dublin?

Maria, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 19:16 (sixteen years ago) link

i spent a month there in 1999 when i was 20. i liked the touristy shit! i took a bus across to galway and the cliffs and all that, too. Oirland!!

oh and i drank a lot.

gff, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 19:21 (sixteen years ago) link

uh so see the book of kells. and i dimly remember lots of literary type walking tours you can do, joyce, yeats, synge, etc. the guiness brewery tour was not really worth it, you don't even get to see the vats!

gff, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 19:25 (sixteen years ago) link

best parts- genuinely good city for culture and things to do. good night life, pub life.

worst parts- price of everything, the locals.

i'm a bit biased against the dubs, this is documented in other, older threads about ireland.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 12:52 (sixteen years ago) link

you posted a thread asking for advice a few months ago, didn't you? glad to hear you got somewhere ok.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 12:54 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, i did post a thread, but it didn't show up in my search for some reason so i started a new one.
and i did end up living in awful overcrowded expensive student housing! don't mind so much, though.

2. Bruxelles/McDaids conveniently across from each other
3. Dawson St

Porterhouse otm. The food's good too.

Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 12:51 (twelve years ago) link

Porterhouse is quite good, but it seems to be always full and has a lot of lamer music on in it. I think basically that the one on Parliament Street is a bit too much for tourists (not that I have anything against tourists etc.).

Against the Grain is a pleasant spot - nice beer, nice food.

The Hop House on Parnell Street is great for Korean and (possibly) Japanese food.

For me, its classic status probably has much to do w/ the fact that it was a neighborhood spot & thus my primary craic house. See also: Slattery in Rathmines

One neat gimmick w/ McSorley's is that it doubles as museum of 19th Century pharmacy - appropriate for boozing!

moo-town slackers (Pillbox), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

Is Porterhouse a multi-level brewpub w/ a number of nookish taprooms, not far from Temple Bar iirc? If so, yeah that place is great!

porterhouse a touch for the yanks alright

It is basically an American-style microbrew outpost, but they elude novelty status by doing a very good job of it! (at least they did circa-2001)

Porterhouse has a number of branches now, there's one in Phibsboro and another off Nassau Street. The amount of choice tends to interfere with my simple desire to get drunk though

Number None, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 23:49 (twelve years ago) link

There's even a Porterhouse in London. The original is in Bray, beloved town of my school years.

fun drive (seandalai), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 23:55 (twelve years ago) link

I thought one of these Porterhouses, where I went with the Vicar years ago, was more like Pearse Street

what's special about Dawson Street?

The Vicar showed me a coffee place that looked bland on the outside but did a tremendous cappucino

Good thing about Dublin: Joyce's commonplace book c. 1902 digitally readable at NLI exhibit, 2011

another: the Swiss Embassy which is on a street of embassies, near Ballsbridge, that I never knew existed till the Vicar and I arrived there in a taxi one clear early evening this summer

places I have not been:

Phoenix Park
Chapelizod
Heuston Station
Castleknock
the Famine Ship exhibit (seems a bit spooky tbh) and other things east down the modernized Liffey

otherwise I have been to quite a lot of places, in Dublin.

Porterhouse to which i refer is at the west end of temple bar area.

There's a great run of embassies around wellington rd in ballsbridge

Phoenix park is nice, and enormous

Heuston is like a railed port for famine ships bringin the hopeless back west, you'll always meet a fella there you know 'from before'

If I had to make a top three:

- Running in the Phoenix Park
- Grogan's on Castle Street (not a regular haunt of mine but quite special)
- TCD Front Square late at night (so peaceful it barely feels like you're in a city at all) and at dawn

bar-wise i'm fairly out of the loop but georges street has many of the best imo, or if you go further south from there there are some good pubs a lot of the way along.

Best part of living in Dublin for me, as someone who goes to a lot of gigs, is simply having access to a wider variety of live music. Like i lived in Galway for years and it was always immensely frustrating having to travel to Dublin or miss out. Galway has actually gotten a lot better in that respect in recent years though, basically since i left

Number None, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 01:43 (twelve years ago) link

pub wise I have had some of my best times in the Lord Edward

also the Stag's Head
O'Neill's, granted it's a sprawl
and Nealon's which was once the Vicar's local
in fact that pub on or near Camden Street which was the Vicar's local later on was also good

went to Guinness Brewery with Lara Byrne once, that was a good time

the pinefox, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 14:29 (twelve years ago) link

All those pubs are solid choices. To be honest, when I lived in Dublin I went to Doyle's more than anywhere else (lol student) so I still have a lot of affection for there even if it's pretty unexceptional.

still possibly the pub I go to the most, as SF book club always ends up there.

in fact that pub on or near Camden Street which was the Vicar's local later on was also good

this is Devitts, a nice old man / local pub (ie not for hipsters, except to extent that I am a hipster). I don't go there much now as it is not so near me (and sad old vicar does not go to pubs so much anymore either).

Rathmines really is a desert for decent pubs.

Just read the new answers now. Glad to see the ILX hivemind subconsciously directed me to the Porterhouse last night (staying directly opposite). Good food and beer. Just walking back from the gaol now - definitely worth a trip. Is the Guinness Storehouse any cop? A bit put off by the fact it's not actually a brewery tour. Oh, if anyone's up for a pint Sunday, or indeed tonight, I'm in town.

Honourable mention for the Chester Beatty Library, by far my favourite museum in Dublin (since they closed the crazy Victorian-science Natural History Museum anyway).

The Natural History Museum (aka the Dead Animal Zoo) is open again, huzzah.

Yeah, the Chester Beatty is a gem. I wuv the cafe there.

Mr Kappa - Guinness Storehouse is a huge building and you get a great view of Dublin from the top. I've never done the tour but I was there for an event once. If you like views and industrial architecture it is worth visiting. If you were living the tourist dream you could do it as the first part of a triple header followed by the Irish Museum of Modern Art (in the olde Royal Hospital Kilmainham) and Kilmainham Gaol (where our dead patriots were killed by the evil foreigner).

The gaol tour was worth doing. It's the prison from The Italian Job! The storehouse was pretty shite though, interesting how they set it up, but the whole thing was just a giant advert. Decent view but it was already dark. The screens where you can watch the vintage Guinness TV ads were good though.

Franz Kappa (S-), Wednesday, 16 November 2011 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

I think a lot of film scenes were done in Kilmainham, probably because it is one of few oldschool jail-like buildings that are not in use as a jail.

mmm, slightly less films than I thought, but they include THE FACE OF FU MANCHU: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilmainham_Jail#Films

The reason is that the guys wanting to restore the gaol had no money and hiring it out to film crews was the only way they could raise the cash!

dmac in dublin is 'a thing'

aside from becoming an urbanite wretch of the highest and totally selling out my heretofore begrudging stony grey soil of mayo disavowal of all things east of tarmonbarry, i'm quite looking fwd to a few years amongst the enemy.

Aside from evening courses, five a side at ucd, boardsdeals-funded meals out, long and brisk walks around muggers and heroin-users along the canal, and three hours on the 16a from the centre to terenure, any clues from the locals as to what to expect?

Bear in mind that i'm in the bottom 5% of ilxors as rated by culture, though as to whether that's been environmentally-stymied thus far or not is open to (short and bad-natured) debate.

Is daft.ie the best way to find accommodation, or should we register with a few agencies? Bear in mind that we're not going to be able to come up with much in the way of references, having lived 'at home' for the past few years.

Any clues/advice as to area? Kilmainham/inchicore seem like a winner in terms of the price/transport/decent accommodation available balance.

I can get to work from anywhere but ms mac is stuck out at eastpoint (near clontarf) which is a bit of a pain.

I'd say you'd be able to get somewhere with a garden etc. in Kilmainham/Inchicore for a similar price to what you'd pay for something pokier in Stoneybatter. But if you like hipster street parties and the like then go for it. I live in Drimnagh, so i can vouch for that end of town but i rent from a friend so i never ran into any problems with references or anything.

if you want hipster food go to bear or crackbird, google away. if you want guinness go to keogh's on south anne street. if you want music i'd say maybe twisted pepper (good lineups but venue is okayish at best) or bernard shaw (loads of children but a decent pub with good beers relative to dublin in general)

not sure about good high end restaurants, it's been too long for me and my friends don't seem to know. winding stair was the last one that people rated and still seem to.

starfish entryprize (darraghmac), Sunday, 15 July 2012 14:12 (eleven years ago) link

What kind of things do you like, Cozen?

Some cultural/historical things to consider:
- Kilmainham Jail (where the Brit bastards killed our independence heroes)
- Chester Beatty Library (fascinating boutique museum of orientalist stuff bequeathed to the state by rich collector guy)
- National Museum on Kildare Street (you want bog bodies, we got bog bodies; also things made of gold and an Egyptian mummy, stuff, etc.)
- Literary Pub Crawl (out of work actors tell you literary anecdotes and bring you to pubs)
- 1916 Rising Walking Tour (you get brought around to sites of exciting uprising action)

My pub recommendations:
- Lord Edward (old school; make sure you go to the upstairs lounge; if in the mood for expensive fish food try their restaurant on 2nd Floor)
- The Brazen Head (popular with tourists, though don't let that put you off. Also, you are a tourist. And it does really nice Guinness and is official oldest pub in Dublin)
- Palace in Fleet Street (not to be confused with Palace on Camden Street, a hellhole; Palace on Fleet Street is appealing old school pub with literary connections but is always full)

Hi DMac, didn't realise you'd moved up. Story?

As an aside for tourist spot suggestions I was in Glasnevin today for the first time. Very interesting even if you're not Irish.

Great things about Dublin:
1) You can meet groups of friends out all round town that are a walk to get to rather than a bus/train/taxi ride away.
2) The quirkiness is coming back that had been a bit drowned out for few years.
3) The Screen, The Lighthouse & The IFI.
4) The parks. Especially Phoenix Park.
5) View from Capel Street down towards Parliament Street.
6) The increase in non-Diageo beers in more and more pubs.
7) Dead zoo (even if you can't go upstairs into the galleries).

Bad things:

1) There are none. Haters be hating.

Lies obviously. Dublin bus (even with the new app), actually just the public transport in general is pretty poor. Run down buildings that have only been around for 10 years. The abandoned Anglo Irish building.

i can't claim any northside cred at all yeah, though i do think even malahide or howth, posh as they are, breeds a diff type of person to actual southside. posh southside has a more urban insular quality, malahide is a bit of a backwater, county dublin etc.

i did go to belvedere tho so there you go. yet again, a sort of difference from its southside counterparts but kinda the same.

what does fucking infuriate me is a few years in london of nobody understanding my voice on the phone has given me a nasal voice that suddenly makes any irish person think i'm from blackrock. this never happened until the last year or two. not that i had a huge north accent before but it's defo a swing based on having had to work in bbc.

Well if you're darting it to Malahide they have another place near Connolly. Or is that the one on Dorset Street? They've kind of done a Porterhouse on it.

I agree with DMac, Howth is spiritually Southside. Sutton as well.

I too shall move soon to leafy Northside. Also Clontarf area. This is all most strange.

Has there been a Dublin FAP recently or was the one a few years ago the last one?

Dare it even be suggested? Is this the most passive aggressive FAP suggestion of all time? I don't care, not bothered, etc.

Oh yeah DV spot on re. Lord Edward. I also like Bull & Castle for draught Metalman.

Well if you're darting it to Malahide they have another place near Connolly.

yeah, people keep saying it is good. But I am developing a slight reaction against the AtG/Black Sheep/OtherOne empire - the beer might be nice, but some of Dublin's oldschool pubs are nicer.

was delayed 10hrs by ryanair on our flight out so lost a day. had some americans in tow so did a lot of touristy stuff: merrion sq, national gallery, the guinness storehouse. pints & the dublin game at the duke off dawson st., food at elephant & castle in temple bar was OK.

will say dublin is very pretty in places; the georgian townhouses are gorgeous

Not sure if this is the best place to post this but:

I live in Northern California (flying out of SF, Sacramento or Oakland) and have traveled to Europe twice in the last 2 years, planning a third and no matter how widely I search, going on 3 years, flying into Dublin is the cheapest in western Europe by a margin of about $300. I never really hear anyone else mention this, though, irl or online...I feel like most transatlantic travelers don't share my experience in finding Dublin flights so cheap? I love Dublin, but would love to see a new city en route to my ultimate destination, Valencia, Spain. Any tips, other places to search, insights into this huge price gap would be greatly appreciated.

in Dublin Airport for a short-ish layover today & unlike my last flight on Aer Lingus a few years back, the flight staff spoke no Irish today/last night. but I notice lots of signs in both English and Irish. is this just for tourists or is there a substantial community of people here who prefer to read Irish? is there a real move toward bilingualism here?

Euler, Monday, 2 June 2014 09:52 (nine years ago) link

Irish is the official language. All official documentation/signage is in both languages.

gyac, Monday, 2 June 2014 10:21 (nine years ago) link

fair q

the answer will depend on who you ask

I'm from a Gaeltacht myself but haven't got great Irish. we had a few houses that the mandated inspector knew to visit to be able to stamp the forms to allow the nod/wink of culture claim and cash flow to the area from the approving Dublin middle class, who speak Irish (having the resources to teach it and send their kids off to the strange and foreign west to learn it each summer). where I'm from, we were much more worried about getting practical subjects so we could hopefully get jobs or bring jobs locally someday.

that never came about, obv. we'd have been better learning our gaeilge, how to weave baskets and act as if life out west hasn't changed since our grandfathers' time. that's p much the only industry coming to the gaeltachts any time soon, aping past poverty for tourists and hobbying dubs.

ito the language, there's a huge scam driven by a range of cabals attempting to sell the pretends of Irish as a living tongue, using a gamed census form and spin to radically overstate the extent to which people use or can use it in everyday life. throwing it on signs, insisting on tramlnslation of all forms/services, EU docs, legislation, making it compulsory to study it until leaving school, the whole thing is a cod and a farce driven by a tiny group of actual gaeilgeoirs from the Gaeltacht (most of whom speak better English), hobby gaeilgeoirs from elsewhere that have a fetish for a famines west, and a few literary scholars who need to drum up work.

I don't have a chip on my shoulder about this at all btw

dn/ac (darraghmac), Monday, 2 June 2014 10:26 (nine years ago) link

huh, interesting. I wonder if there are other nations with an official language that isn't dominant in the communication of most of that nation's people. the examples that I'd consider would all be former European colonies where the official language is a European language but most people speak an indigenous language. but that's not the case in Ireland.

-- Do you understand what he says? Stephen asked her.

-- Is it French you are talking, sir? the old woman said to Haines.

Haines spoke to her again a longer speech, confidently.

-- Irish, Buck Mulligan said. Is there Gaelic on you?

-- I thought it was Irish, she said, by the sound of it. Are you from west, sir?

-- I am an Englishman, Haines answered.

-- He's English, Buck Mulligan said, and he thinks we ought to speak Irish in Ireland.

-- Sure we ought to, the old woman said, and I'm ashamed I don't speak the language myself. I'm told it's a grand language by them that knows.

Innumerable persons with whom I had conversed had represented to me that spiritous liquors and intoxicants generally had an adverse effect on the senses and body and that those who became addicted to stimulants in youth were unhappy throughout their lives and met with death at the end by a drunkard's fall, expiring ingloriously at the stair-bottom in a welter of blood and puke.

Such reasoning only appears to hold water on occasion because there is strength in numbers. Don't believe their lies. The crowd is untruth.

it’s an interesting documentary. several good anecdotal scenes - the quite congenial sounding interrogation at Dublin airport for instance.

that interview with the academic who sent the reference to the judge is bizarre. You know the people of Dublin might not be in a position to properly appreciate documents of that sort, right? best sell them on the private market where they can be better appreciated.

I would like to have known what the change in the culture of trust involves. As someone says, the position of cataloguing represents an enormous amount of trust. You get to say what does and doesn’t exist. I will ask a librarian friend how they manage it.

it would have been interesting to know more about the timeline of events and decisions James made but i guess without his participation that’s difficult.

Fizzles, Sunday, 30 December 2018 08:14 (five years ago) link

good documentary strand generally that as well.

three months pass...

Me and my wife are planning of possibly visiting Dublin in the first week of July... Neither of us have ever been Dublin, so any tips on what's happening there in July, and what sites/places to visit in general, are welcome.

We haven't a book a hotel yet or anything, so I'd also appreciate recommendations on where to stay. We can afford a hotel but nothing too pricey or fancy.

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 April 2019 08:03 (five years ago) link

will be back later with recs. might have to tease out yr idea of what pricey and fancy are!

fremme nette his simplicitte (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 April 2019 08:31 (five years ago) link

Suggested itinerary:

Arrive in Dublin
Leave Dublin immediately

ah jaysus

fremme nette his simplicitte (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 April 2019 08:55 (five years ago) link

ah no, it depends what you're into of course

Number None, Thursday, 11 April 2019 08:57 (five years ago) link

All the obvious ones:

- Chester Beatty Library
- national art gallery
- the national museums
- get on the dart and go up the coast to somewhere like howth
- go to the gpo and other obvious places

gyac, Thursday, 11 April 2019 09:01 (five years ago) link

I was going to recommend the Jackson court hotel where we stayed over ten years ago but fuck’s sake, it’s like €734 for four nights in a double room that week!

gyac, Thursday, 11 April 2019 09:04 (five years ago) link

I've been there only once, but apart from all the things to do in the city, we had a really great day buying a cheap day pass on the DART train (like €10 for unlimited rides) that runs up and down the coast outside Dublin. We climbed the hill at Bray, visited the Martello Tower at Sandycove that's in the opening of Ulysses, and had great seafood at Howth (a village with an insane amount of seafood places).

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 11 April 2019 09:08 (five years ago) link

I'd say Airbnb would be your best bet accommodation-wise tbh

hotels in Dublin are absurdly expensive

Number None, Thursday, 11 April 2019 09:08 (five years ago) link

Isn’t air bnb in Dublin fucking tons of local people over though?

gyac, Thursday, 11 April 2019 09:14 (five years ago) link

yeah, me included

but I use it in other cities so can't really complain...

Number None, Thursday, 11 April 2019 09:27 (five years ago) link

On the food front, if you want to sample some Irish produce I'd recommend:

Klaw (oysters)

Fish Shop (fish!)

Forest & Marcy (modern takes on classic Irish dishes)

Delahunt (Beautiful old building with a nice cocktail bar upstairs)

Hatch & Sons (good spot for a simple lunch if you're around the city centre)

If you're splashing out:

The Greenhouse (Probably the best lunch in town. And it's got a Finnish chef)

Number None, Thursday, 11 April 2019 09:28 (five years ago) link

Thanks for the recommendations. I'd definitely be up for taking the train and seeing the coast. I guess this Howth is worth a visit, since two people mentioned it already?

As for restaurants, I don't eat meat or fish, but my wife does, and she loves seafood. So we'll have to settle for places with at least one vegetarian option on the menu. How easy/difficult is Dublin in general for vegetarian? (I'm lacto-ovo, not vegan.)

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 April 2019 09:47 (five years ago) link

hmmm, most of the fine dining-ish places are not very vegetarian-friendly....

let me have another think

Number None, Thursday, 11 April 2019 09:49 (five years ago) link

Also, we're both into literature, visual arts, comics, stand-up, pop music, so anything along those lines would be of interest.

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 April 2019 09:50 (five years ago) link

Well there's the World Science Fiction Convention in Dublin Aug 15-19th, if you want to delay your trip - I did look in to going, but for the same sort of outlay I could have had a week in New York - so sorry Dublin.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 11 April 2019 09:55 (five years ago) link

id have said town is pretty good vegetarian option wise tbh

fremme nette his simplicitte (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 April 2019 11:29 (five years ago) link

the usual hotel aggregators and Airbnb are the options for accommodation. i think we can note that without reference to the accommodation crisis like

fremme nette his simplicitte (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 April 2019 11:30 (five years ago) link

Oh there are vegetarian options for sure, but a lot of the fancier places are still just stuck on one starter/one main

Number None, Thursday, 11 April 2019 11:32 (five years ago) link

xp fairly sure that the usual options are obvious, but fuck airbnb

gyac, Thursday, 11 April 2019 11:34 (five years ago) link

I don't think we would go to fancier places anyway, we're not that wealthy, and both of us are used to travelling on a budget.

I'm not the biggest fan of Airbnb either.. Do you have an idea what would be average price per night for 2 in a three star hotel, for example?

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 April 2019 11:38 (five years ago) link

xp agreed agreed

but i mean like nn i use em too so shrugs whatta woild etc

i uh

look i mean sorry i wouldnt know about three star hotels sorry

fremme nette his simplicitte (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 April 2019 11:39 (five years ago) link

booking.com are my go-to for hotels i dunno if im teaching granny to suck eggs here tuomas but they alow you to group by type, star rating, amenities, distance, budget and rating by different groups (eg young couples) so thatll give you agood indicator

fremme nette his simplicitte (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 April 2019 11:40 (five years ago) link

gyac and eyeball kicks recs are a very good selection i second all that

fremme nette his simplicitte (darraghmac), Thursday, 11 April 2019 11:41 (five years ago) link

Looking at the hotel prices for July, and I guess Number None is right, they are pretty steep, way more expensive than in Helsinki for example. So I guess we'll have to settle to for an Airbnb, if we wanna come. I found one that seems quite nice and with a decent price, it's located in the corner of Infirmary Rd. and Aberdeen St. Would that be a bad location for moving around town?

Tuomas, Friday, 12 April 2019 07:15 (five years ago) link

no, location wise. the town is very walkable, if walking is something you can bear. thats right at the phoenix park, two mins from heuston station for buses and the luas, probably about 25 mins walk directly to oconnell st.

i dont know anything much about that street tho ito would i stay there, others may advise

fremme nette his simplicitte (darraghmac), Friday, 12 April 2019 07:27 (five years ago) link

That's a grand part of town. You won't run into any bother

darragh, not quite sure exactly what me and my very drunk baby are gonna be up to quite yet but it’d be great to say hi if you’re around late afternoon tomorrow or weds? no worries if not, it’s pretty short notice after all

i wouldn't recommend portmarnock but then i'm a malahide man so it's basically shelbyville.

it isn't v nice tho really? like it is pleasant suburbia but the town is fairly depressed apart from the beach i guess, when there aren't pitched battles between roving gangs. i would rep for malahide if you want beach plus town. or howth maybe above either.

i don't think i've ever set foot in dun laoghaire. i often think if i lived in dublin again i would see more of it.
