Vegemite: banned in the U.S.A.

The accompanying picture is worth it alone.

It goes without saying at this point, but this is the stupidest ban ever.

But this will end up being the thing that will turn Americans on to Vegemite, since it's now illegal.

I had vegemite on toast earlier this year in Melbourne during breakfast across the hostel. Quite a bit of it. It's just brewed soy sauce paste, basically. Shrug.

Ban fucking Big Macs first.

I guess they're probably outlawing it on the premise that someone could somehow overdose on folic acid, but considering all of the legitimately unhealthy food out there this seems pretty stupid.

surely it's more um natural to get one's folic acid from yeast/brewing by-product than a tablet though? am i mising something about folic acid here? it's a good thing right? or do they giv eit to pregnant ladies cos they hate them? look, now i'm going to have to google "sources of folic acid" to find out WHAT ELSE those crazy septics are going to ban...

A little vegemite in a roast beef gravy is a *great* flavour boost, akin to adding worcestreshire sauce. Goes nice similarly in soups too.

channel ten was reporting it as well today, including the doubt over the veracity of the rumour. they said it was definitely true but people could still bring it in to the US because customs have never been required to search bags for it. who knows how credible channel ten is though. i don't care too much because there is no ban here!

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 06:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah Ive since read a retuers that said there always has been some kind of import restriction (this isnt the same thing as a sudden new ban of course) but people can bring stuff in anyway. Dunno which is right but I bet there hasnt been some recent full on ban specifically because "it has folate in it".

two months pass...
This looks like it's the only Vegemite thread, so I'll pretend it's a CLASSIC OR DUD thread:

CLASSIC.

Aimee introduced me to it, and I've mostly been having it on toast with butter, but my favorite use for it by far is on a cheeseburger, preferably with some sort of spice (habanero Cheddar, for instance, or hot sauce in addition to the Vegemite and cheese). Also good on roasted potatoes, and I've just had a bowl of glass noodles with roast pork, roasted asparagus, Vegemite, and a little demiglace to thin it out.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

You are the only person I know who would ever even think of that.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 18 January 2007 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I was reading a blog entry about someone eating noodles with Maggi in Malaysia, and Maggi's in that class of Thick Brown Umami Condiments with Marmite/Vegemite/etc, so I figured what the hell.

Dinner tonight: pimento cheese-stuffed burger with Vegemite.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 00:29 (nineteen years ago)

Kraft need to hire you for a new ad campaign man.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 January 2007 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

I've never stuff cheese or anything into a hamburger. What is the method?

do i have to draw you a diaphragm (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 18 January 2007 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

I keep looking for the reply button.

Vegemite is really an ideal burger condiment, because it's compatible with the existing traditional burger condiments -- so unlike teriyaki sauce or something, it gives you an expanded palette rather than an alternate one, something that doesn't happen as often. (Of course ketchup itself is an example of this happening -- in fact, an example of it happening twice.)

Cheese-stuffed burger: I pressed a layer of ground beef on a plate that was thin enough that the resulting burger wouldn't be massive, but thick enough that things wouldn't leak through; spooned some pimento cheese onto it, leaving a wide margin just in case; and then pressed more ground beef on top of it. This burger happens to be rectangular because I'm out of buns and am using a sub roll, but that shouldn't matter.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I wasn't sure if you did that or rolled a meatball, thumbed a hole, pushed the cheese in and pressed the whole thing flat.

do i have to draw you a diaphragm (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 18 January 2007 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

I wouldn't want to do that with pimento cheese, but I think you could with something more solid -- Cheddar, roasted peppers, etc.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

”They told us they wanted a Vegemite that doesn't require combining with butter and one that's easier to spread,” Mr Talbot said.

Wait, whaaaat. The whole point is the melted butter. I dont want the butter BUILT IN. I tried those vegemite flavoured Kraft Singles and they were complete ass. DONT MESS WITH MY MITE.

the other thread title was a big fat lie.

estela, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 23:45 (fifteen years ago)

marmite precedes vegemite historically I think but an Aussie told me marmite was a "pale English imitation" and he said it with such conviction that I agree no matter what the facts of the matter are

Marmite is awesome, you fools. But I fear this is an argument that may cause permanent war between Australia and the UK.

look you guys let me break it down for you what quality snacking is all about. get some crackers. then get you some nice sharp cheddar cheese. slice the cheese into cracker-sized pieces. spread vegemite on one cracker, place slice of cheese atop vegemite, top with other cracker to form the immortal cheddar cracker vegemite sandwich of destiny. snack and be happy. have a cooper's if you are still thin enough to be drinking beer and have a club soda if you have had to bid a sad farewell to beers.

get your bucket of free wings (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Thursday, 1 July 2010 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

^^^ Would definitely agree if Vege- was replaced with Mar-.

Although if your waistline can't take beers I'm not sure what it's doing with cheddar.

emil.y, Thursday, 1 July 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

I am unlikely, after eating a cheddar cheese cracker or two, to feel compelled to drink 8 16-oz bottles filled with cheddar cheese, and indeed unable to resist the temptation to do so, all the while insisting that those around me join in -- my treat!

key difference

Could one compare the flavour of vegemite to Guiness, at all? I'm trying to think how to describe it, when you grow up eating the stuff it just isnt alien at all.

Nothing goes better with matzot than thinly spread Vegemite

moley, Monday, 18 April 2011 06:01 (fifteen years ago)

Hook turns are easy, you just go into the left lane when you see a tram line, stop in front of a load of cars, wait for the light on the perpendicular road to turn either red, amber or green depending on which rule book you have read, which junction you're at and what year it is, wait for the traffic behind you to fail to stop and then simply continue through unless the oncoming cars aren't paying attention and plough ahead killing you and your family. I fail to see how this is difficult to understand.

iirc Kraft ran a competition for the public to name a new version of Vegemite that's mixed with cheese. Some feller submitted "iSnack 2.0" and WON, and they actually launched this thing and stacked shelves across the country with it. Within weeks the damage wrought to the brand was so pure that Kraft ditched it and renamed it Cheesybite.

Marmite tries to hard.

moley, Tuesday, 19 April 2011 05:14 (fifteen years ago)

xp I didn't go to the shops last night, I had a haircut instead (less tasty on toast, I'm sure) so no marmite xo report today. I promise i'll be on it tonight tho.

Yossarian's sense of humour (NotEnough), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 07:28 (fifteen years ago)

Marmite XO was a disappointment, tbh. I had some one slice of toast with XO and one with regular marmite, spreading it equally thinly/thickly on each, and I had a cup of strong coffee to cleanse the palette after each bite (also to wake me up). I would describe XO the way that people who don't like regular Marmite describe it, sort of leathery and cloying; I guess that's the super-yeast. I'm not sure its particularly pleasant, but that might be just me not being used to it. I'll give it another go tomorrow and see what happens.

Yossarian's sense of humour (NotEnough), Thursday, 21 April 2011 06:36 (fifteen years ago)

I'm sure it tastes like melted vinyl...I mean, I'm sure aged Vegemite would taste equally as horrid.

"hey we have this product with a very strong acquired taste...I know, let's make it so strong it becomes an industrial adhesive!!!!"

VegemiteGrrl, Thursday, 21 April 2011 06:38 (fifteen years ago)

I have never tasted the stuff, but based on what I know by reading (your posts) I think I would probably like the stuff. I hate sweets and really go for the savory. I will go to the food imported store and bravely purchase a jar of Vegemite and get some crackers, thus will probably gain 10 lbs in a 48 hour period, but it's worth it, (right?????) for the whole introduction of Vegemite to the USA thing.

Wiggywoo, Thursday, 21 April 2011 06:55 (fifteen years ago)

Waht, I have Vegemite on Vita-Weat all the time, not fattening at all.

it always seems to have dick smith in it (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 21 April 2011 06:56 (fifteen years ago)

golden rule: USE IT SPARINGLY

A light smear with a little butter on a cracker you will be fine

Do not spread that shit like peanut butter or it will be your downfall!!!

VegemiteGrrl, Thursday, 21 April 2011 06:59 (fifteen years ago)

they make hitler parody videos about people who take too much vegemite

freaks of nature

VegemiteGrrl, Thursday, 21 April 2011 07:16 (fifteen years ago)

I don't want to get used to Marmite XO then unable to go back to normal marmite because I can't taste it, and I get locked into paying an extra quid for Extra Old.

Its an hour later and I can still taste the XO after after another 2 cups of coffee. Bleugh!

Yossarian's sense of humour (NotEnough), Thursday, 21 April 2011 07:39 (fifteen years ago)

I have some things to say but I guess I am not saying them fast enough - twice ILX keeps timing out (shit) so whatever, I will now abbreviate and say I will try the V stuff and buffer with some butter and advise back, if ILX's new server will give me a chance to post!!!! xoxo Wiggy.
Thanks VegemiteGrrl and Autumn Almanac for instructions. I'd be lost without you both!

Actually I could kinda get with a lower salt one if it was full of flavour. I should give it a go.

I got some of this, it's not actually much stronger than normal Marmite, and thus not really worth the extra money, but it does taste fucking good on a buttered crumpet.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 14 May 2011 10:46 (fifteen years ago)

^^^ yeah my dad got this, you can deffo tell the difference, tho. nice.

i'd say the trick for beginners is to lightly grill some toast, but lots of butter on and then a just a little bit of marmite. before long you'll be slathering it on. (toast, that is)

http://i56.tinypic.com/xnsu1g.gif (max arrrrrgh), Sunday, 15 May 2011 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

also, stir a little bit in as you're frying mince beef: WELL FIT.

I didn't really like Vegemite as a kid. But when I was living in France I developed this real craving for it and used to go on a pilgrimage to the only shop I knew in Paris, somewhere on the Left Bank, where you could buy it. Now, it's about the only thing I like to put on toast. The mysteries of Vegemite!
