It's not hot enough.

More Tongue Feldman (noodle vague), Monday, 17 July 2006 06:59 (nineteen years ago)

Sounds like routine summer weather here.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'm in LA for a few days and it's just thought-destroyingly hot right now. I can't take this shit. Somebody needs to cool this city down, for real.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:07 (nineteen years ago)

heat index of 40 here later today

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:09 (nineteen years ago)

ahh.

I wear t-shirts in the wintertime.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:31 (nineteen years ago)

Try being pregnant right now :(

Archel (Archel), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:34 (nineteen years ago)

I'd love to, really I would. But I think the Daily Mail would object to the necessary medical procedures.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:35 (nineteen years ago)

i have heat stroke, i think.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:35 (nineteen years ago)

The worst thing is, I love hot weather normally. Maybe going for a swim in the sea tonight will make me appreciate it again.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:40 (nineteen years ago)

Classic: Making babies in June, so the lady is warm as toast through winter.

Dud: We did this both times, and now all our birthdays are in the same week (early march)

(It's not dud really)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:44 (nineteen years ago)

That's not a dud! You have a birthday season! We have one of those in my family, though it's a bit extended--all five of us are between my mom's birthday at the end of August, and my dad's at the beginning of November.

gooblar (gooblar), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:49 (nineteen years ago)

Growing up, my parents would put up a big 'Happy Birthday' banner in the kitchen in August and just leave it up for the next two and a half months.

gooblar (gooblar), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:51 (nineteen years ago)

Birthday season is right:

3rd, Alice
9th, Me, Dawn.
10th Amber
25th My sister.

Also, Dawn's best friend had a baby last year on Amber's birthday.

It's all go...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:53 (nineteen years ago)

My wife and I also share the same birthday (as each other).

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:59 (nineteen years ago)

i love it this hot. it could even be hotter.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 17 July 2006 08:07 (nineteen years ago)

I hate it :( Makes me want to move to Sweden or something. I'm not suited for hot weather. It's the humidity that really sucks, I spent the summer in LA a couple of years ago and it was actually slightly more bearable than London. The fact that Californians have heard of air conditioning helps, of course.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 17 July 2006 08:14 (nineteen years ago)

Tell you what, working in a room where 37 computers are whirring away in close proximity 24/7 doesn't help either.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 17 July 2006 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

You know what's weird? The hot-weather sniffles. I've got 'em.

gooblar (gooblar), Monday, 17 July 2006 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

does anybody have an mp3 of "heatwave"? my email is red bull dozers at gmail dot com

ken c (ken c), Monday, 17 July 2006 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

nah that's not weird, isn't that when the temperature changes and all the bacteria that only really kick off when it's above a certain temp get moving? thought that was why everyone's always sick when the season changes.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 17 July 2006 08:26 (nineteen years ago)

I have Shonen Knife's cover of it at home, Ken.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 17 July 2006 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

Yesterday, it was "Attack of the Flying Ants" day...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 17 July 2006 08:29 (nineteen years ago)

it's been in my head all morning.

i am loving this hot summer btw, it's been amazing, i have never been going to parks and things this often ever. (i can appreciate that being in the office is a bit rubbish now if there's no air con) i wish i had taken some time off work though so I can just wander about, get out of the office and into the sunshine or something.

xxpost if i can have a copy that would be the most lovely!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 17 July 2006 08:29 (nineteen years ago)

I'm housesitting in West London and this flat is not air-conditioned but it is a lovely temperature due to the airflow/shade tree placement. Thirty-five degrees today REALLLY?

Only bad feeling about heatwaves: hot, dirty feet. Bleurgh.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 17 July 2006 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

a couple of weeks of it being fine but just 23 celsius would be nice.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 17 July 2006 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

35 is tomorrow.

As what's her face said on the telly this morning - "remember, that's in the shade, if you're in the sunshine it'll be warmer".

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 17 July 2006 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

the best place to be is at work, as the long as the air-con works. might come in at 7am and leave at midnight.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 17 July 2006 09:30 (nineteen years ago)

I hope this is a short thread. Right now Ottawa is hotter than MIAMI, allegedly, and today we're supposed to break a 40-year-old record. Aargh. I hate heat. I honestly start getting depressed as the summer solstice approaches.

It is awful. I think I have some kind of reverse SAD - everything has been making me miserable since this heat started (no, no, not This Heat, gahhh).

If I could have a copy of Shonen Knife's version too then it might perk me up. *begx0rz*

Not just charity shop workers but anyone who works for a charity it seems (no air-con at Alix work).

I'm in LA for a few days and it's just thought-destroyingly hot right now.

There's a reason I live nearish to the coast (sea breezes, y'see -- cue Roxy Music).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 July 2006 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

I swear there used to be air con in my building, but no more, it seems.

Kaet (kate), Monday, 17 July 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

The air con here is working fine (for a change), but it lures me into a false sense of security that it's not too hot, but of course then I go and leave the building...

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Monday, 17 July 2006 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

37c/98f today here, and hotter as the week progresses. Humid as shit too, 66% right now. I've got to go out to the store too, no more putting it off. Although for five bucks I could have groceries delivered tomorrow....

No air con here...

Archel (Archel), Monday, 17 July 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

Yesterday was horrible, 102F. We took the dogs to the lake/park as usual and although we got there around 8am it was already way too hot. I can't take direct sun/extended periods of being outside in the heat.

archel, I feel for you. I greatly fear ever being pregnant during a TX summer.

Ms. Misery TX (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:00 (nineteen years ago)

it was 100-105F all weekend. i went into work yesterday, not a soul in the building except for me, and the air con was roarin' like a mothabitch. i had to sleep in front of my a/c unit last night.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

I hate the hot weather. I feel nauseous. As a child I'd always get massive headaches and would throw up.

Try being pregnant right now :(

:-( Poor thing. My mother was pregnant with me during the summer of 1973 which experienced a MAJOR heatwave.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

As I predicted earlier in the year, a really shitty cold overlong winter has meant we're getting a proper summer for once. It's been great - I really appreciate living right next to a very large expanse of grass right now :)

I don't feel the desire to leave London at all at the moment.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

i think it's time buses install air con. that's the only bit that's bad.

london would be perfect just now if it were by the seaside.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

The busses just need to get LARGER WINDOWS that actually open.

Kaet (kate), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

oh don't get me wrong, I'm glad it's hot and sunny.

The year I was made redundant early summer, I thought "well, at least I'll get some sun" but there was no summer that year (2 years ago)...

Mm, could you turn it down just a little? That's lovely.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

i think it's time buses install air con. that's the only bit that's bad.

our busses are icy-cold. mmmm. it makes up for the long, boiling walks to the stops.

Ms. Misery TX (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

a really shitty cold overlong winter

i don't remember it being that bad. and there was that week in January where it was about 18 degrees outside or seemed like it. we had the office windows open!

i want to know how the floor-side heaters on the left side of buses work i.e. do they run as long as the engine runs? the 48 was a horrific furnace yesterday.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

I love summer. Even on the worst dog-days I NEVER wish it was winter. Just take lots of showers, and if you can't, wet down as much of your body as you can. Head, back of neck, arms. It helps. Lowers your core temperature.
And hydrate constantly, otherwise, like Nathalie said upthread, nausea and headache.
I don't drink those sport-drink things. Full of sugar. I figure water is fine. You probably get enough sodium and potassium from your diet if you're eating enough fresh fruit. And summer=fresh fruit! PEACHES. This is the only time for them! They will cure you!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

OTM. drinking water, eating fruit, being happy. all you need.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

and swimming! omg.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

it's even nicer outside london, though, matt!

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

ugh. give me super strong air conditioning and a coke any day. actually, just give me winter.

ive been taking 3 or 4 cold showers a day lately (our air conditioning isnt working so great) and saying 'i need to lower my core temperature!' but i thought i made that up. those showers are rocking my world right now.

i do heart peaches, btw. pineapple is preferrable though.

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

I'm worried now that I'm thinking of a completely different song to the rest of you.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

holy CRAP toronto is gross and hot... 35 already this morning... supposedly 44 today with the 'humidex'. that is crazy hot. oh joy.

my house has central a/c, but my roommate (the houseowner) is not turning it on, because he feels it is some sort of personal challenge that he can "make it all the way" to the end of summer without ever using it (he's worried about the cost moreso than the environment, but that too). i mean, i'm all for saving money and not blasting AC all the time, but COME ON. i'm sweatin' like a rapist in the place, so turn the damn thing on for chrissakes! it's coming on tonight one way or the other...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

is it really 40C in NYC today and tomorrow? holy shiit

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

Poor Anna. She must be melting.

But they have, like AC everywhere there.

Kaet (kate), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, even the trains are air conditioned in NYC. GOD I MISS AIR CONDITIONING!!!

Kaet (kate), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

the AC is the main reason i came into work today, otherwise i was contemplating a day off...

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

no i suppose not. hotter than Cairo and Calcutta tho.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

it would be out of the ordinary in SF

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

the air con on the new Southern trains totally rocks at least. made up for the horrible bus journeys yesterday.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

I think it might be a few summers since we hit 100, but we had multiple 90-degree days last (?) summer

Rev. PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie 2), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

Archel (Archel), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

Hm, I can't decide whether the lovely cool of swimming in the sea would be worth the accompanying torture of the shadeless beach this evening.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

but it'll be the evening! you won't need the shade surely

ken c (ken c), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

Actually this morning has been cool and overcast, hurrah marine layer! There was even a bit of rain. Then again, we'll see how long this lasts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

i've been in the sea pretty much all weekend which was fab, i was only on the shadeless beach for a few minutes. take a big brolly?

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, it's pretty hot right now. I caught a cold from living in A/C world over the weekend, and now I'm trying to get some humidity in my throat by having the windows open.

def zep (calstars), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

It'll be about 6.30pm which is still bright sunlight and boiling hot at the moment ken!

Maybe brolly is the way to go.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

It seems like summer is really becoming less of a season and more just the way things are. Over the past few years it sounds like cities that don't normally see many 90F+ days are getting them (and suffering since they aren't prepared.) Here winter is becoming extinct (I only wore my coat once this winter.) and summer stretches exhaustingly from March through October. I tried to find some charts are something that showed the average temperatures over the past couple of decades to see if this true but I couldn't find any. Anyone know where something like that is?

I did find current yearly info for Austin-average of 111 days above 90°F (32°C) and 198 days above 80°F (27°C). That's almost the whole year! I would like to see if this differs from averages in the 1980s though.

In the UK I expect people are already comparing this Summer to the 'scorcher' of '76 (I think it was that year). Perhaps it will surpass that even. At least we're thwarting that third Ice Age.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 17 July 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

Allah Frog, are you still in the tri-cities? Has this heat got to your brane yet?

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 17 July 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

Seattle weather is always so miserable... NOT! (granted, things look a bit scary towards the end of the week, but still a picnic in comparison to the rest)

San Diva Gyna (and a Masala DOsaNUT on the side) (donut), Monday, 17 July 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

Still in the TCs indeed, for the moment, but I may be moving to LA springish. Heat has yet to cook my brain like an egg, but it did manage to burn my hands today, thanks to superheated metal.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Monday, 17 July 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

i passed one of those bank signs with the temperature the other day and it said it was 122 degrees!! my own thermometer said only 110, but it's in the shade...

okay
twin cities = mpls-stpaul
quad cities = something in iowa
tri-cities = ?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 17 July 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

Masala DOsaNut, you are so so cruel! But keep those temps around for August, when I will actually be there to enjoy them.

AF, we should FAP after we both have moved away from this place, to revel in the nostalgia for heat/dust/radioactive and chemical waste.

tri-cities = richland, pasco, kennewick washington (location of the Hanford nuclear reservation).

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 17 July 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

thanks! is there a tri-cities minor or junior hockey team or something?

The Americans

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 17 July 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, really I can't wait to get the hell out of here. Nothing to do with the summer weather though, which is a treat generally. Moreso the general boringness of the area, plus all the crazyass extreme Christians/Mormons. Where're you looking at moving to, Jaq?

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Monday, 17 July 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

35C in Bozeman, MT right now, at nearly 6pm.

Get me back to Seattle.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 17 July 2006 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

39C or so here, plus high winds and dust storm just blew through. Should be well over 40C by the weekend.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 17 July 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

Why don't national chains adapt to regional weather patterns? I walked through the mall last week and shops are already starting to hawk winter/back-to-school clothes that no one could conceivably wear for four months. It's like that every year and I assume it has to hurt sales.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 17 July 2006 22:57 (nineteen years ago)

but at least i'm not in charlotte!

OUCH!

pleased to mitya (mitya), Monday, 17 July 2006 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

The JW's no longer bother me, after the last two to come a calling ended up buried in the back yard. Thought about just moving to Seattle myself, but I get kind of crazy when it is overcast and gloomy too many days in a row.

Upside of loving such heat: When the rest of you have been burnt to cinders by global warming, I and my reptilian friends shall be princes of the earth, lazing on our rocky thrones and soaking up the sun's glorious rays.

denver has cooled off to a balmy 83F with scattered showers.

it gets really hot here for like 3 weeks in the summer, but most of the time its 80-85F. which is bearable. and no humidity, which is really what makes heat fucking awful.

*yawns* So the high reached 95-plus F (35-plus C) degrees. So what? WELCOME TO SUMMER. Summer is supposed to be stifling hot with blinding sunshine and nary a cloud to protect you. Actually, what I really wanted to say is "welcome to my world and the reason why I'm so grumpy throughout summer". Oh, and air conditioning doesn't solve everything, particularly when you live in a split level and/or when your car's been out in the sun so long that the a/c system doesn't begin to be effective until you're nearly at your destination. I've given up on fighting the heat, anyway. You just have to accept it, get used to stewing in it, and hope that winter will make up for it all.

I found myself doing housework at 1am as it was the only time that it felt bearable to be moving about. I made the mistake of opening the windows at night and found myself chasing huge moths round the house. Does citronella work on them? I tried burning lavender oil but it didn't seem to have any effect.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

You must have a hole in one of your window screens. Wad a piece of duct tape on it.

The price of gas has me keeping the AC off and opening the windows. I don't really like all that wind and noise, but most of my driving is short hops. I can stand it.

I'm going to haul many bags of pine-bark mini-nuggets up a steep hill today, and the perverse thing is that I'm looking forward to it. Donkey work! I'll get started as soon as I can tear myself away from ILE.

Air conditioning is struggling to keep up today. Still feels hot in the office. I really can't stand this heat!!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently dried lemon peel is good for deterring moths.

I am quite fond of the moths compared to the other bugs that have invaded in this heat - flying ants and big red spiders.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

We just have a million house spiders. If we got rid of them we'd probably be buried in whatever smaller bugs they're subsisting on, or so I justify my casual vacuuming.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

We don't have window screens in the UK.

Well this would explain the moth problem. Get some!

Ms. Misery TX (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

I mailordered some screens for our living room windows, but that was to keep the cats from getting OUT. It does help a bit with moths, but they get in anyway through the kitchen window, which isn't suitable for screens (opens outwards). That's all we get really, moths and occasionally wasps or daddy long legs.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

another charity without air conditioning here, it's actually too hot for me. i must admit that i was surprised that big departments stores (selfridges and debenhams) don't have it either, and are just too hot to shop in!

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

Our old office had air conditioning that our office manager insisted on having on ALL YEAR ROUND. Brilliant for the three days it was actually hot enough to warrant it, horrible the rest of the time.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

I'll try the dried lemon peel. I've got tilt and turn windows so screens would be no good even if the tiny scottish summer justified getting them. I remember seeing curtains made out of fine chains that were supposed to deter insects, they look pretty cool as well.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

We're getting a break here today - only 33 C predicted for the high. The sun was intense on my walk to work, but the breeze was cool. Supposed to hit 41 C on Friday though, and stick there for several days. This is our typical summer weather, and I chose to move here, so I shouldn't complain, but it is such a relief when it's over.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

our heatwaves don't usually last that long and the Summer is cooler generally so window screens would be un-necessary most of the time i guess.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Whatever, you people are all nuts. Even when it's not a HEATWAVE OH NOES you might still want to open your windows for a little air and not have the entire local population of insects circling your bedside reading lamp!

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

Window screens are for buggies! You can see out of them, they are basically just metal mesh in a frame that goes on the outside of the window, so you can open your window and get the breeze but not the bugs. That and A/C are pretty much the only reasons the southern US is habitable.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

But all our years of temperate climate means we are not going to do very well in the End Times, I suspect.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

All this UK problematic and screenless windows talk is explaining maybe why my UK-born mother-in-law refuses to open their house windows over here. Let in the cool cool breeze! Air out that nasty stale smoke! This is why the god of architects gave us windows! And screens? They keep the bugs out, whatever the season. We have our windows open the 3 seasons of the year the A/C doesn't run. (xposts)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

Archie, screens look kind of like this, from the outside:

http://www.crystalclearwindows.com/windowscreens/window%20screen1.jpg

From the inside you can see through them perfectly -- some kinds of screen are silvery metallic (woven of fine wire) and some are woven of nylon thread or something and look vaguely black, but at most they cause a slight blurring or color shift to your outside view. The weave is fine enough that from more than a few feet back, you don't even notice.

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

Seattle is similar in that there just aren't that many flying bugs about normally. The seabreezes or something blows them all inland.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, no moths. BEES?? What about stinging things: wasps, hornets, bees? Or ladybugs (or those false Japanese beetles here that just LOOK like ladybugs and then hatch throughout your house in late winter)? Or flying ants? Srsly, you don't have a mosquito problem??

We have a mild, wet climate with only a couple of months for the bugs to enjoy themselves, and sometimes it does get a nuisance - for example, there is one day every July when the flying ants swarm and that can be quite unpleasant! But we don't have many big bugs beyond moths, we don't have a lot of mosquitoes - insects in general are vastly less common over here, that's all there really is to it.

Once when I was in Italy, reading in bed with the ceiling light on, I put the book down, looked up and the ceiling was BLACK with mosquitoes. Holy fuck.

I don't have a window screen in my bedroom, but that's my landlord's fault and I've been too lazy to call him about it.

Meanwhile, I am overjoyed that it is only 82F today. Last night we had to call off band practice after an hour and a half, because we practice in a house where all the windows are boarded up so that noise doesn't escape. It was pretty miserable, obv.

Onimo, it may be cloudy, but it is also warm and sticky and you can get burned through clouds (as I found out on Sunday).

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

We had one summer when there were loads of mozzies around, we ended up buying a mozzie net for the bed. But we've hardly had to use it since, I think it's because they started dredging the pond in the park at the back of the house every winter, so there weren't as many dormant eggs or whatever.

Scotland has a bad midge problem. On the face of it not as bad as mozzies, but in reality much worse. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midge_%28insect%29

Up until now this summer I've been moaning about the aircon at work, because if you dress for the tube and outside then you freeze all day in the office - I've got a pair of tights in my drawer to put on when I get in, but I will complain no more, it's heaven...

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Walthamstow Flying Ant Day was about a week ago.

I lived in Pisa just by the river and there were mosquitoes everywhere nearly all year round. They were absolute bastards - really cunning. They would wait until you turned around and then try to silently float down onto you, but if you saw them hovered back up out of reach. After a while I started to develop a sixth sense: constantly looking for tiny shifting shadows out of the corner of my eye (the downside of this is that when I got back to England I looked like a jumpy paranoid madman living in fear of shadow monsters). I had to use some dodgy chemical electric-vapour thing called 'Vape' every night, but it wasn't much use in the summer because it was still 25C at night and really humid so you had to leave the windows open.

Teh littlest HoBBo (the pirate king), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

Onimo, it may be cloudy, but it is also warm and sticky and you can get burned through clouds (as I found out on Sunday).

Agreed, but it still didn't live up to the pre-burn hype. It was a hot day but nothing like the BARBECUE IN HELL we were promised.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

I am amused by jel's use of 'jiggy'.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

BARBECUE IN HELL day is tomorrow, btw, Onimo. Fancy an outdoor pint?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

The thing I really can’t stand about the heat at the moment is when I’ve just got out of the shower in the mornings, and my drippy hair starts somehow making my forehead and the back of my neck sweat. I get really overheated in the morning, which makes me hurry to get out of the house. I am surprisingly early every day for work when its really hot outside!

Anyway what’s really annoying me is how its not THAT hot outside, but its still boiling in my apartment. My kitty must be dying.

Also I am shocked and appalled at no screens in the UK. We have screens here but we probably don’t need ‘em. We don’t have bugs, either. BUT I do have a pair of KILLER SQUIRRELS who like to prance across my windowsill. If it weren’t for screen, they could DASH inside and give me rabies.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

Poor Anna. She must be melting.

I am. I am covered in factor 50+ and (please no) our office air con is being a little unreliable. Still, it's a joy to discover that NYC has air conditioned subways and I do conceede the grid system makes naviagtion easier. Just don't get me on to the "Is Dizzy Rascal hip hop?" conversation. (If you're reading this Matos...)

>> BUT I do have a pair of KILLER SQUIRRELS who like to prance across my windowsill. If it weren’t for screen, they could DASH inside and give me rabies.

Ah well, see there's no rabies in the UK thanks to our overzealous quarantine system. That's why we don't have screens!

Argh - 100. Due to irritating circumstances, I had to walk to find some lunch today. Nothing close sounded good (Arbys, greasy Chinese, Thai place I eat at once a week anyway, competing Thai place), so SINCE IT'S COOLER TODAY I walked one unshaded blistering mile to our town's single sushi purveyor (also a sub shop). Stupid to forget you have to walk BACK. And, while it's cooler than yesterday, it's still 97 F!!!

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

I moved a woodpile and hauled 22 bags of bark mulch today, drinking hot coffee all the while.
I think hot weather energizes me. I must move to Fiji.

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 01:42 (nineteen years ago)

Beth, you are a strange, strange person. I think Fiji would be too cold for you -- perhaps try Ecuador or Libya. And Jaq? Walking is plenty of physical exertion.

I thought there was a bird dying from the heat in my back yard today...turned out it was just a fledgling waiting for mama to come show it how to drink from a birdbath.

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 02:38 (nineteen years ago)

Air conditioned subways... I had forgotten... aaaaahhhhh (however the stations aren't, bah).

If you think the grid system's easy, Anna, wait until you try the Queens "Grid" system. Mwah hah hah.

Today the fans have been reshuffled so that all of them move, but all they're doing is moving hot air around. I wish they'd turn off the lights and open the windows.

Kaet (kate), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 08:20 (nineteen years ago)

Mmmm dormant eggs.

I have never seen a dragonfly in a house.

Quite pleasant in my office, for once.

I worry about going out for lunch though.

kilburn flying ant day was last wednesday. i don't really mind them... they're just ants.

I've been having problems with the open window/room full of moths at night conundrum for the last few days. Not noticed any mosquitos but then again I generally don't as they're not a problem for me. My housemate is bitten to buggery though.

Blackheath Flying Ant Day was last week, although strangely they hadn't actually started flying. I was all set to start the Defend The Indefensible: Flying Ants thread when they all mysteriously vanished as suddenly as they appeared. Why does this happen?

Are we all looking forward to the hottest day ever in London today?

Do all NY trains have air con now? I got on at least one older train (maybe the L) that didn't the first time I visited.

Are we all looking forward to the hottest day ever in London today?

Have to spend most of it in the nice cool office so...er, yes

Supposedly going to the cinema later as well although that could turn out to be folly if they don't have AC in there.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 08:49 (nineteen years ago)

cinema last night had loverly AC, if they didn't have that i think i would've walked out.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 08:50 (nineteen years ago)

i was late(r) for work this morning due to pausing to watch the dragonfly on ravenscourt park pond, can't imagine them inside given that they are probably the biggest insects we have here in the uk. am kinda jealous. maybe more jealous of the obvious size of mark's living room than the fact he has dragonflies in it 8)

hammersmith flying ant day was last week, yes. gloucestershire's was sunday given my mum's complaining when she phoned.

that adjustable screen is only adjustable in one direction.

> but all they're doing is moving hot air around

if fans aren't blowing ON you and allowing your sweating body to do what it is meant to do then the fans are pointless, yes.

even sainsbury's frozen aisle isn't very cold today, it's weird. usually i can't spend more than a few minutes there but it only seemed a little cooler.

i've somehow missed this flying ant day thing, since i have no idea what it is.

the lobby of this office, the bit where the fewest peoplehours people spend, seems to be the coldest bit of the whole building. it is quite retarded.

although it's nice to walk in from the outside and suddenly cool right down, like some kind of decompression airlock, but for heat

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

i've somehow missed this flying ant day thing, since i have no idea what it is.

They're sort of horrendous large ants with wings, that swarm everywhere for about 24 hours, maybe a bit more, every summer, then mysteriously disappear. They kind of get everywhere. Millions of them invaded Scotland a couple of years ago. I like how people were urged "not to panic".

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 09:33 (nineteen years ago)

my office is not really a/c'd. we have these a/c unit things with big pipes that we stick out of the windows. it's ok really, it's the bus that's the kicker.

A big red admiral butterfly came in my window and got stuck yesterday! There's yer british insect that's bigger than a moth and stupid enough to fly indoors and not find its way out again.

Today I'm supposed to be carting stuff to the recycling tip, which is a really clever idea when I feel sweaty and horrible just from shifting in my seat.

NY subways most definitely have A/C and the L trains have actually (all?) been converted to the newer stock, so it was likely that particular car's system that had conked out.

I have been told that TfL has a standing cash prize offer to anyone who can figure out how to install A/C units in the trains themselves without making the ceiling unfeasibly low, is this true?? Cause if so we should just start a thread about it and we'd probably have an answer in no time

Yeah, those outrageous bus temps take into account sitting on the sunny side. The shady side is slightly cooler. Only slightly, mind you.

I know that TfL *had* a contest to design air conditioning for the tube, because I've seen some of the entries and there were some delightfully wacky ones.

Kaet (kate), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

the car will have WINDOWS ffs. using a/c in a car in the uk is fucking indefensible.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, it uses less petrol on a highway to use the AC than opening windows because windows open at high speeds creates drag which makes the car far less efficient.

Kaet (kate), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

Where are these places where it's turning windy? Hardly a breath of air here in Oxford right now.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

Emsk, there was another thread where we discussed the threshold of when having the A/C on become more efficient than having the windows open - it was about 50mph I think.

I've been stuck in enough traffic jams in the UK in the summer to know that A/C can make a MASSIVE difference at times. If you're near stationary on a hot day the windows being open does nothing but let more sun through.

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

Kaet (kate), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

31% chance of a thunderstorm tonght, London!

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

I was going to say.

I was stationary in traffic a few times yesterday. But I was on a tour round a couple of branch offices; it wouldn't have been doable either by public transport (no service) or on a bike (120 mile round trip).

I had the aircon on all the way, too. But most of the time I was travelling at 70mph, so used less fuel running the aircon than if the windows had been open. Plus, as Ed pointed out, if you're going at low speed then having the windows open doesn't make any difference.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

If you're gonna have heating in a car you might as well allow it to blow out cool air as well. that said i would rather have the windows open anyway.

nothing is worse than getting into a car with all it's windows closed on a day like today.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

The cafe at my work has window screens! I have walked through the doors many times, but only today, with this thread in my mind, did I notice. Thank you, ILX, for opening my eyes to the world around me.

emsk, the point of being in a car is to get there at all, which makes cars great if you don't have the luxury of living in a city with 24/7 transport.

I put the cold blowers on in my car today and they blew out warm air. That's how hot it was.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

The point of being in a car is to get to places you can't get to by other means.

Besides which, as I said, yesterday I drove for about 120 miles, mostly at 70mph. I spent about 10 minutes stationary in traffic, in total. Does that 10 minutes mean I shouldn't have taken the car?

it was 27 degrees outside at 10.30 last night, and it was 22 degrees at 6am this morning. I hope it rains today, it's completely cloudy at the minute, which means if it doesn't rain it's going to be insufferably muggy. I was on public transport for 3 hours yesterday getting back from Henley, without air-con, it was pretty horrible.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 20 July 2006 04:24 (nineteen years ago)

It's 6.30am, and it's cool and grey outside.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 20 July 2006 04:36 (nineteen years ago)

Henly must have been nice though.

Walking to the station was very hot - I had some Lucozade half way! - and the train was just horrible. It was too uncomfortable to sit still, but of course there was no choice but to sit still, on the horrible, sticky, manky seats.

It was noticeably cooler in Maidenhead. Then again, it was an hour later.

Seems much nicer today.

If it does get even hotter next week, I am going to have a hissy fit.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 20 July 2006 07:05 (nineteen years ago)

ok, it's forecasting a record high three days in a row, but their record high of 45 degrees is only 3 degrees more than the average high temp for July which is 43 degrees. And I'd imagine another three degrees when you're used to living with temps that high doesn't make that much of a difference....

it's slightly menacingly grey in glasgow today; the forecast is for "thundery showers". i've been loving this hot weather, which is most unlike me: normally i moan about it being too warm. perhaps it's because our office air-conditioning has ACTUALLY BEEN WORKING for once.

My little part of north east Edinburgh seemed to have its own weird microclimate yesterday, the haar off the forth cleared for about half an hour at lunchtime but apart from then it was foggy and really quite chilly. When i went to visit my mum in the evening the sun seemed to come out when i got past Leith and it was pretty balmy but nowhere near the 34 degrees that was forecast.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

i took a thermometer out of work yesterday and stuck it with blutack to a phone box over the road. it was 43! in liverpool! at 5.50pm! (although, thinking about it the heat accumulated by said phone box over the course of the day may have skewed the result slightly?)

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 20 July 2006 10:21 (nineteen years ago)

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

I know what you guys upthread mean about the invigoration. Tuesday I voluntarily moved a big pile of rotten firewood. I'm terracing a hillside and am always looking for junk to shore up the ledge I've created. I also carried 22 bags of pinebark up the hill and dumped it on the edge. I'm fine as long as I have water. And a hat.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

i have stopped complaining about the 'pointless' air con for the moment.

have been in 44 degree heat before, Palm Desert, CA (and that was a month or two before the yearly peak). felt just like is does when you open the oven door to take out pizza but without the possibility of closing said oven door to make it stop.

koogy wonderland (koogs), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

But inside the oven it is gas mark six!

What is today's temperature in gas marks - the only temperature scale I understand?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

The lowest gas mark is still about 140 degrees C so today's temperature would not even be on the scale.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

The hottest I've been in was 112 degrees in the Mojave desert in June 2003, but I was only actually outside in it for 5 mins at a time so it was more a curiosity than anything else.

Peej, today's temperature in gas marks is gas mark 0 because you don't actually need to turn the over to accomplish room temperature.

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

I have been in something around 110 degrees before, in the Sierra Nevada in high summer. It was actually OK, being very dry heat, but there was also a warm desert wind blowing, which made it feel slightly unreal. It was more like standing in front of a hot-air vent rather than being outside in warm weather, and it was bearable (though my tendency to turn pink after three minutes in an average Scottish summer meant I went and hid in the shade anyway). It's mugginess and humidity I can't stand.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

That British summer of '76:

The temperature reached 80°F (26.7°C) every day between 22 June and 16 July. The truly remarkable heat wave was in late June and early July. For 15 consecutive days from 23 June to 7 July inclusive, temperatures reached 90°F (32.2°C) somewhere in England on each of these 15 days. Furthermore, five days saw temperatures exceed 95°F (35°C).

We've got a long way to go to beat that. Furthermore, I am no longer eight years old, so it won't seem like an Everlasting Summer anyway.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

Try taking a warm shower (or coolish, but definitely not cold) right before you get into bed, but don't dry off, let the water evaporate to cool you down as you fall asleep. Or, wet and wring out a sheet then layer it on top of the sheet that covers you - that way it can cool you down as it evaporates dry but you don't get soaked. Have a fan running so it points over you but also hits a wall to diffuse the air and keep things circulating.

Earwig oh! (Mark C), Friday, 21 July 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

Another good one is to wrap an ice cube in a paper towel and apply it to pulse points of inner wrist and inner elbow-bend. If I have been writing I like to also use bottle coolers as cuffs.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

When I lived in DC with no AC I used to sleep with wet towels draped over my body. AND take about six showers a day. A friend of mine who has lived in both places says that DC heat is worse than Vietnam.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

I think the deal with the cold shower is that it feels great when you are in it, but once you get out your body decides you are too cold and makes all the effort to warm you back up, which you don't need. So it's more counterproductive than a slightly warmer shower, especially if you are jumping into bed right after.

Forecast for this week in London: Tuesday 32C, Wednesday 34C. It's not going away, is it? Air-con is not likely to be fixed at work either; temp where the condensers are on the roof was apparently 55C last week, so they're just tripping out.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 22 July 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

It's 109°F here. Of course I'm very grateful to have it, but the air conditioning isn't helping very much. I'm sweatin' like a bastard and my stomach is killing me. I've never had heat make me sick before. Ugh. This sucks. I had tickets to see the Raconteurs play at the Warfield tonight. I was really looking forward to this show (especially after the BS Gnarls Barkley pulled at the Fillmore Tuesday night—grrr!), but there's no way I'm going. I just can't. :(

Our New England heat wave seems to be over. I actually got chilled at work today, weeding a pea-stone driveway in scanty clothing while it rained on me. Ran the heat in the car on my way home.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Saturday, 22 July 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

The temp has dropped a bit, here, but the continuing rain only serves to increase humidity. GROSS.

if you guys just had a/c it would be so much easier. That summer of 76' sounds like an average April or September here!

You live where I live. (Actually, isn't that the way it's been over the past two winters?)

I would sacrifice all manner of objects to whomever to have a summer where the temperature is 80 degrees F every day, with only a few days of 90-degree weather. Over here, the high has reached 100-plus so many times during the summer that it's an anomaly to not experience at least a week's worth of same. I believe the hottest day I ever lived through was one where the high went up to about 45.5 degrees C (114 degrees F). Couple that with our sunshine, which is so potent in strength the rays can actually cause pain, and constantly measurable humidity levels of ~ 35 - 40% and -- yup, it's party time.

You rest of the worlders? Welcome to the reason why a lot of people don't particularly look forward to this whole summer thing.

Phoenix Dancing (krushsister), Sunday, 23 July 2006 04:14 (nineteen years ago)

I live in HELL!

No, you don't, Ned. Jennie and I do. Today in Hell, it reached 112 degrees F or 45 C. The humidity was about 30-35%. Tomorrow's forecast is 113 F. As of 12:58 am PST (after midnight, bitchez) it was 97 F/36 C.

Went for a swim twice today. But it was not refreshing as it usually is. The pool water was warm like bath water. I'm guessing the water temp was around 85-88 degrees. It was probably not 90 degrees because we kept running fresh cold water into the pool.

Last week I tried to drink some bottled water I left in the car. I figured even though it's going to be warm water, it's better than nothing when thirsty. But I ended up burning my tongue trying to take a sip. Yowzah!

Berlin continues its heatwave, with temperatures forecast to climb to 38C by Friday... record July temperature for July 37C... heatwave on two continents... "this will be a short thread"... well, apparently not... should mods change it to "Rolling "I CAN'T STAND IT THIS HOT" thread"?

Despite being hot as all fuck, I don't think TX has been disproportionately bad this year.

Maybe it's a combination of spending more time in the heat over the past couple of years plus the non-existent winter (45 ramping up to 100 is hell, 80 ramping up to 100 is just annoying), but I'm bothered less by the heat than ever.

I reserve the right to bitch constantly if it keeps peaking in the upper-90s/triple-digits come September.

speaking of texas

Lubbock, Texas, plans to pray for rain

LUBBOCK, Texas, July 24 (UPI) -- Public officials in Lubbock, Texas, are organizing a day to pray for rain.

"Nobody is going to tell God what to do and what not to do, but we are in a serious drought in West Texas and since he is the man who controls the rain clouds, we're asking him for his mercy and his help," Mayor David Miller told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

The City Council and the Lubbock County commissioners are expected to adopt resolutions this week asking local residents to both pray and fast for rain this Sunday.

So far this year, Lubbock has received about half of its normal 10 inches. In the weeks since June 1, the growing season for cotton, rainfall has been a scant .75 inches, far less than the normal 4.43 inches.

Officials have tried prayers before and say they were answered. In January 2004, after a year of drought, the city and county set aside a Sunday to pray for rain and got the second-wettest year since records have been kept.

C J (C J), Thursday, 27 July 2006 08:05 (nineteen years ago)

It is awful. I think I have some kind of reverse SAD - everything has been making me miserable since this heat started (no, no, not This Heat, gahhh).

I think this may be the case with me too. For the last three or four summers I've found myself becoming inconsolably at odds with myself, snappy, insomniac and depressed despite nothing being terribly wrong with my life. I love the outdoors and the sunshine and even the heat is more welcome than winter weather but something about the summer months just agitates me. I don't like it as I'm not the same person during these times as in the winter and even when I used to go on holidays with my parents as a kid I'd turn into a whiney snivelling little oik.
It's only this year that I've noticed a pattern. What is going on?!

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 27 July 2006 08:11 (nineteen years ago)

Lots of lovely fork lightning over Streatham way (probably much further SW than that, actually, considering I couldn't hear the thunder) around midnight last night but it never came near SE19.

We leave the patio doors open all day to get some air flow in the house and gradually collect all manner of bugs as a result, all of whom gather around the lamps, the TV and the laptop in the evening. If they're not mosquitoes they certainly sound like 'em.

Air-con fixed in the office - yay!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 27 July 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

it think they mean before you leave them in the sink and/or before putting them in the dishwasher?

the only problem with preshredded cheese is that its too thick. i like to shred thin so it melts nicely on/in hot food. its better chunkier on salads though, yes.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 27 July 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

Archel, before I launch into that non-rinsing thread, I just want to say that at my mother's house I have had food that tasted like soap because of her haphazard dishwashing practices.
Maybe American dish liquid is harder to rinse off because it has so much lotiony greasy stuff. It doesn't clean as well as dishwashing-machine soap for that reason. And STILL gives me dermatitis. It's a misbegotten notion that ANYTHING can strip grease AND not dry out/irritate skin.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 27 July 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

I rinse and I wish we had screens, but then I'm heavily US-influenced.

Heat a contributory factor to the rollin' blackouts in Soho/West End today which left my office without power from 2pm. Went home at 3:45pm. Partially "yay" but also partially "oh god no" because the workload doesn't go away just cos I can't turn my PC on. More "scheduled" blackouts tomorrow too. Fanx, EDF.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 27 July 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, bus window design is stupid - it's the buses you should complain about though, not the glorious sunshine! i was out in the rain on thursday, heading into town from brixton. that was good too. i like weather. i like seasons.

so much colder today, "weather is shit in this country!" etc etc

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

Am I the only one who hasn't found it that much cooler? I know that the temperature has dropped a bit, but it's still about 25 degrees in our bedroom overnight, with the windows wide open. When I was out getting lunch the breeze was nice, but it was warm, people were walking to work this morning with jackets on, I think they're all nuts. And we haven't really had proper rain in Walthamstow, despite many promises.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 31 July 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

It's still warmish here (high 90s/30s), but so so dry it's heavenly after the sticky mugginess of the cooler Toronto area. Gloriously cool on the way into work in the mornings, but too hot to walk home. So we got bikes yesterday on the theory of a) not staying out in the hot for so long is better and b) you have to work, but you make your own breeze and this is good. Do I have to start thinking of myself as an athletic sort and consider the insectoid lycra advertising-laden special padded clothes?

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

Special Weather Statement!

...HOT AND HUMID THIS WEEK ACROSS THE FOOTHILLS AND PIEDMONT OF THE CAROLINAS AND NORTHEAST GEORGIA...

HIGH PRESSURE AT THE SURFACE AND ALOFT...WILL PRODUCE GENERALLY FAIR WEATHER OVER OUR REGION THROUGH WEDNESDAY. BUT...TEMPERATURES WILL WARM TO SOME OF THEIR HIGHEST LEVELS SO FAR THIS YEAR.

MANY FOOTHILL AND PIEDMONT LOCATIONS CAN EXPECT MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES IN THE MIDDLE TO UPPER 90S...WITH THE MERCURY ONLY EXPECTED TO DROP TO NEAR 70 AT NIGHT. ONLY ISOLATED SHOWERS OR THUNDERSTORMS ARE ANTICIPATED TO PROVIDE NATURAL COOLING AND MUCH- NEEDED RAIN.

THE AIR MASS WILL ALSO BECOME INCREASINGLY HUMID THIS WEEK. THE HEAT INDEX...THE COMBINATION OF TEMPERATURES AND HUMIDITY AND THEIR EFFECTS ON THE BODY/S ABILITY TO COOL ITSELF...WILL CREEP OVER THE 100 DEGREE MARK AND POSSIBLY APPROACH ADVISORY CRITERIA TUESDAY OR WEDNESDAY.

So yeah if I stop posting I probably died.

Yes, it's looking peachy this week in London - 23-25C, occasional shower, breezy. Smashing. When I walked up the hill to the X68 bus stop this morning it was about 18C and a little damp; I like seasons as much as the next major dude but, if we were going to be stuck with anything, it would be that early October freshness I experienced this morning.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

I closed up the bedroom last night to make the most of the window unit. I slept half the night on top of the covers with the air blowing directly on me, and that kept me just cool enough. I did make the mistake, though, of leaving the windows closed in the living room, and this morning it was an oven -- it may have actually been 90 degrees in there. I put on the pant that had been hanging on the back of a chair in the living room, and they felt toasty, like they were fresh out of the dryer. Which usually feels nice, but not this time.

My bottled water in the car could have been used to brew tea. Drank it anyway, to avoid heat stress. I worked for four hours, planted a couple of rosebushes in horrendous hardpan soil. I practically needed a pick-ax to break it up. Many bags of compost hauled and dug in, much dousing of self with the hose. I am crazy, I guess.

There were only two girls working in the garden center. They had sent all the rest of the people home, forgetting that a truck delivery was coming. When I left they were both reclining on carts in the dusty parking lot, slathered with sweat and baby oil, soaking up rays, waiting for the truck. They are crazy, too, I guess.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 3 August 2006 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

Yesterday I cut the grass using a push mower. My riding mower was at the shop. The sweat was incredible. When I finished I took a nice cool bath, but before I started running the water, while I was getting outta my shorts, I looked up into the mirror above the sink and I had totally steamed it up as if someone had just taken a hot shower. This is new to me and I don't think it's a good thing.

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 3 August 2006 00:32 (nineteen years ago)

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't been using my car A/C because of the gas$$$$. Windows open. My hair is a mess, but I'm hoping the effect is ravishing rather than crazy-lady.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

I actually drive an oven instead of a car, so unfortunately windows open just blows around hot air without ever making anything cooler. I do get to be all sweaty though.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

Don't they say though, Beth, that running the car AC with windows up burns less gas than driving with windows down, because of the increased wind resistance caused by open windows?

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

Monday morning is always the worst because they've had the AC off all weekend and don't turn it back on until 9 am (even though the building opens at 7:30) so it's got that stale, humid, nasty feeling instead of that stale, crisp, air conditioned feeling. I know when my upper lip starts sweating while I'm sitting at my desk typing that I'm in for a real bullshit morning.

Fuck me, I remember the summer of '06 (in teh britain), it was scorching till the end of july, then august arrived and... it was fucking autumn. Like cloudy every fucking day. Don't even remember it raining overmuch, just relentless off white cloud cover. I associate it with the beginning of a major depressive episode, but it would be a stretch to say it caused it, as such. Lets say, it was not helpful, at that time. The weather did not come through for me when I could have done with at least a handful of sunny days.

Neuer write off the germans (Bananaman Begins), Friday, 29 June 2018 22:33 (seven years ago)

Sunday my block was so quiet it was eerie. Everyone either at the beach or indoors, apparently--it's usually noisy and extremely social with kids, ppl walking, gardening, parking, going to the store, etc, but on Sunday there was no sound at all, barely even any traffic noise. Which if you know Brooklyn is a shocking state of affairs.

On the other hand I took a cab (don't ask) down Atlantic yesterday and drove right past a car ON FIRE on Franklin Avenue, with various loud "WHOMP!" explosive sounds coming from it periodically. So that was exciting.

it is no wonder that those in the village of Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, India, have been bottling the scent of rain for thousands of years. In a recent article of the Atlantic, Cynthia Barnett describes how the post-monsoon earth are collected, steam-distilled for six to seven hours, and fixed in sandalwood oil in order to produce mitti attar — Earth’s perfume.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Friday, 27 July 2018 16:10 (seven years ago)

looking forward to Earth's perfume tonight---37 today in Paris but storms rolling in tonight.

the Paris métro people explained that they're not going to add AC because the exhaust is hot air and it would just heat the tunnels & quais in place of the trains. Are metros in other major cities air conditioned, and if so, how do they deal with this?

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 27 July 2018 16:15 (seven years ago)

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Friday, 27 July 2018 16:19 (seven years ago)

A couple of tube lines are air conditioned but most of it isn’t - I’m not sure if it’s even possible to do for all lines?

There was widespread derision at the central line twitter (central line is one of the hotter ones) saying this the other day:

Hi, we're aware of the heating issues. We've made improvements to the ventilation systems on the current fleet. New trains are coming in early 2030, under the Deep Tube Upgrade Program which will be delivered with full air cooling systems. Thanks, Sol

— Central line (@centralline) July 23, 2018

gyac, Friday, 27 July 2018 16:20 (seven years ago)

This is a rare opportunity for the UK and US members of Ilxor to suffer together, because here in the UK the temperatures are approaching thirty degrees centigrade! That's eighty-six degrees in Fahrenheit. And when I say "here in the UK" I mean "in London and the South of England".

And also Bournemouth. Whenever there's a burst of heat the Daily Mail sends a photographer to Bournemouth to photograph attractive people in their swimwear. Or they pick images from the news agencies of attractive people in their swimwear, in Bournemouth. I've been to Bournemouth in real life and I always associate it with heroin, not attractive people.

Because that's where I go to buy heroin! No, I'm joking. I was actually channelling Mark Prindle a little bit there. Apologies to Mark Prindle. In my life I've visited Seville and Hong Kong in similar temperatures and the only practical advice I can give - beyond the fact that you get used to it - is keep you hands out of your pockets with your fingers spread. Hang them by your side, like miniature radiators. It probably doesn't help much but it can't hurt.

Ashley Pomeroy, Monday, 11 July 2022 17:38 (three years ago)

I am in the southeastern U.S. (Atlanta, Georgia to be specific), and we've had pretty standard heat this summer--mid 80s to mid 90s Farenheit (roughly 29-35 Celsius), high humidity. We do seem to be getting more rain than usual.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Monday, 11 July 2022 17:43 (three years ago)

One thing that separates us is electricity. We don't have air conditioning in the UK so the only thing that eats electricity is the refrigerator. It's not a huge factor. In the US everybody has air conditioning. The same was true in Hong Kong. I remember getting the bus to Victoria Peak partially to see Hong Kong but also because the buses are air-conditioned. Shops are air-conditioned in such a way that there's a blast of cold air on the pavement when you walk past them. Perhaps it's meant to entice you in. I remember seeing a film at the cinema and the temperature was uncomfortably cold.

I also remember thinking "is it like this in Singapore and Japan and all across China and India etc, and if so what impact is that going to have on the environment?" I grew up with science fiction so the idea of living on a metal planet covered in skyscrapers with a giant heatsink that spews hot air into orbit isn't so bad, but how are we going to evacuate heat into space? Vacuums aren't conductive.

Seville on the other hand had narrow, tall streets, made of stone, with shades:
https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/b/seville-spain-sept-th-shadow-curtains-street-protecting-tourists-harsh-sun-heat-which-common-summer-southern-158938631.jpg

On the surface its cute, but it raises the question of whether it would be more practical to cover the streets with a second layer of streets, as in The Caves of Steel.

Ashley Pomeroy, Monday, 11 July 2022 17:43 (three years ago)

It's even hot up here in Edinburgh! Admittedly with a stiff breeze howling off the Firth of Forth to keep things sensible.
