maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
yay PROJECT RUNWAY season 2

Robert arrives in Miami = classic

Do I know Diana Eng? I feel like I've met her..

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 8 December 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

After five months without, today I regret for the first time having let my cable lapse.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 8 December 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

daaamn heidi!!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 8 December 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

I bet Diana wins this week, her piece was neat..

Daniel comes across as an actual human being, it's kind of adorable. That guy with the orange tie dye is so gone.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 8 December 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

they better not vote off santino -- the backwork on his dress was gorgeous!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 8 December 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

bald dude = eliminated

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 8 December 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

i mean, i see it coming.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 8 December 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

No, it's going to be either swimsuit lady or flat-affect quasi English menswear designer. The bald dude's dress is really good and he may win the challenge.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 8 December 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

"swimsuit lady"!

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 8 December 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

"Jaclyn Smith, Jr., Esq."?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 8 December 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

serious. Pennsylvania mom's outfit isn't great, nor is Balthazar or the girl from Houston with her own shop..

Swimsuit lady is ugh

Kara from South Africa, Santiago, Diana = tops

I love Diana! I hope she wins the whole thing. And not just because she went to RISD.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 8 December 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

Daniel's second piece is really nice!

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 8 December 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

I don't want Daniel F to go anywhere, because I want to watch hsi hair

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 8 December 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

its totally going to baldo.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 8 December 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

I want Diana to make me clothes, I can't afford Helmut Lang.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 8 December 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

what happened to the season one reunion show they were promoting a week ago, but never wound up on the schedule?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

I don't know! Is it different than the season one reunion they did right before the big NYC fashion week shows? Maybe just a rerun of that?

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

"When you get excited, it takes pictures." I SO want that. Everyone is going to hate Santino by the end because he's got what it takes and the ego to match. I'm glad swimsuit lady is gone. I'm not sad to see "It's cute and pretty, y'all, like me!" go either. So far my favorite character is the gay professor who should have gone to NY instead of LA.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

it must have been the same one daria; they were advertising it last week but maybe it was a mistake

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

lacking cable, i really wish they would show this at a bar, weekly. i would so patronize a bar that promoted project runway night.

carly (carly), Thursday, 8 December 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

Santino v Andrae FIGHT and I am sooooooo there

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 19 December 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

I have a feeling it'll be Santino v Nick in the long run, they should be best friends & are both super talented but Santino is a sore loser with a fierce temper and Nick is a total sweetheart, or so it seems. will nice guys finish first? oh, the drama.

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 19 December 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

"It doesn't pay to be nice"- Kevin, season 1
I love me some Kevin. He's such a passive-aggressive indie boy!

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 19 December 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

except later I read that Kevin is in the market for a Russian mail-order bride, and he's possibly 44 and not 37 like it said on the show, so that kinda tarnished him for me a little :(

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 19 December 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

GO DIANA ENG

joseph (joseph), Monday, 19 December 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

she has the technology!

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 19 December 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

I loved the Barbie episode.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

also how santino went and sat in the corner. oh, drama.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

Daniel Franco OMG!

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 22 December 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

whyyyyyy?

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 22 December 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

Why didn't they get rid of that dead weight Emmet?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 22 December 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

i was totally expecting emmett to go too!

also, pretty much all the lingerie SUCKED. except for the winning team's, but theirs still wasn't that great.

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 22 December 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

place bets now: will diana snap one day and become the new wendy?

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 22 December 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

Most of the drawings looked good, but the execution wasn't good. I liked the concept of the winning team, but on the runway it kinda just looked like Calvin Klein underwear.

What was going on when Daniel and Heidi locked eyes for way too long as he explained his theory of 'lovemaking'?

I liked Daniel's best of all; even though everyone said it looked too old.

I love Diana. What about when Santino claimed that all 3 women on her team had never had sex?

I don't really like this year's new, now the models are in the contest too. I guess they felt they had to raise the stakes for them so that they would actually start to show up.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 22 December 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

What was going on when Daniel and Heidi locked eyes for way too long as he explained his theory of 'lovemaking'?

that was what i was talking about! i think i started exclaiming at the tv. i think it wasn't the only time during the episode.

i'm not sure i'm predisposed to anyone now that daniel f is gone. i found nick super-annoying at the beginning, but his cute dress last week and his classiness in dealing with santino have redeemed him a bit. i like chloe, but not only for the right reasons. daniel v may have potential and i like that while he's obviously sort of set in his mod/rocker personal style, he doesn't seem to take it over-seriously (am i being incoherent here?). the girl whose name i can't remember (on diana and marla's team) seems to be the least-developed personality on the show, but there might be something interesting there ready to come out.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 22 December 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

oh, actually I probably like Emmitt most as a person, but i don't remember anything about his work, for good or bad

i think it wasn't the only time during the episode

that i exclaimed, i meant

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 22 December 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

emmett's sort of a dead weight. he can't sew, right? he probably won't last very long then. (same with marla, thank god). gabbneb OTM abt daniel v. (and the other girl you're thinking of = guadalupe, whose work i don't even remember).

i think i missed this daniel-heidi locking eyes thing. god i'm glad he's gone.

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 22 December 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

GB, how can you like Emmet the most as a person?

I liked Daniel this year. He has an almost Japanese vibe the way he is always nodding his head and bowing at people when he wants to thank them. I think he overdid it a bit with his exit statement re ethics though.

It must be so much pressure to have to all work in that one room. Unless the deadlines aren't as strict as they appear on the show. It also seems like a really easy way for ideas to get "borrowed."

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 22 December 2005 05:57 (twenty years ago)

GB, how can you like Emmet the most as a person?

maybe i'm forgetting something, but he seems like the smartest one there. or maybe he's just the best critic. (a-ha) chloe may be the most adult, though, and i'll bet she has a great shot for that reason alone.

i'm not sure i ever came to like heidi last season. this time around, i'm starting to warm towards her. maybe it's the maternal thing. wild horses and 100 squash blossom necklaces, however, couldn't bring me to say the same about nina garcia.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 22 December 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

guadalupe seems secretly-smart too

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 22 December 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

yeah, at least he didn't andrae-out on everyone. that was just PAINFUL.

i was wondering about that, mary...has any fashion designer worth his/her salt ever had to work with these kinds of seemingly impossible deadlines? possibly silly question but aside from this show and america's next top model i know nothing about the fashion industry or the rates with which couture is pumped out.

ideas for a potential project runway drinking game are more than welcome here, by the way. stuff in a "take a shot every time tim gunn says 'carry on'" stylee plz.

x-post emmett seems to have a good head about him, but i think his designing focus is a bit narrow. the opposite of diana, really.

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 22 December 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

I was bummed that Daniel F. left tonight. I liked his head-bobbing, too. Santino is obviously really talent but a huge bitch and yet I somehow find him endearing, just that he is so ambitious. But I really like, um, Nick! Yeah, he's great. His Barbie dress was wonderful, and I like how he seems to have this developed social life when he talks about his students and his niece. Daniel V. has some potential, and I think I like him partially because he seems like the only straight guy (seems, at least) and so I can relate to him maybe a little bit better from the start. Also, I think Guadalupe seems really cool (OTM xpost). She handled that Kara anxiety mini-fight okay, I thought.

BUT I'm bummed that you all like Diana so much. She irritates me, and I thought her teammates gave valid criticisms of her. I loved the little spat she had with that uptight model, though.

Okay, sorry, I'm just starting to get really into this show. I wish I just had all the episodes on DVD right now so I could stay up all night watching them. Yeah, I really sound like a straight guy, right? Ha ha.

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 22 December 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

otm about santino. i don't like diana much either. i mean she seems a good sort and obviously has ideas, but she's also totally unrealistic about how workable they are, indicative of her somewhat general un-self-awareness.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 22 December 2005 06:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm loving Heidi Klum this year. She's like a pregnant Barbie.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 22 December 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

also, her teeth. xpost.

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 22 December 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

i just realized who Tim Gunn is - he reminds of no one so much as my high school assistant (now head) theater guy, who ended up running/mentoring/negotiating/caretaking pretty much everything within shouting distance

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 22 December 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

actually, I think Zulema is the likeliest sleeper candidate

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 22 December 2005 07:04 (twenty years ago)

her sweater garment was shit though.

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 22 December 2005 07:14 (twenty years ago)

Emmet is such a blank.. I thought last night's episode was pretty shamelessly put together for drama and had nothing to do with the clothes - none of them were that great and the winning team was the worst! The hell? It was just plain black lingerie with shirt collars. Blah.

I love Diana, she is such a geek. Nick is kind of a pushover. I wonder how much of Santino is Santino being smart enough to know how to play to the cameras. I found Daniel Franco kind of endearing, by the end, I realized all that stuff he said that I thought was total LA nonsense on first season.. well, he really believes it. I think he has read too many romance novels.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 22 December 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Tim's take is a treat..

re Daniel V:
I, too, responded well to the sleek silhouettes and minimalism of designs, but there was something about the collection that looked very Playboy Bunny, and that disturbed me. It brought out my inner-feminist!

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Diana has a blog (of course).. She reminds me of my old college roommate, that's what it is.

http://home.comcast.net/~populartransit/poptrans/newframeset.htm

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I thought last night's episode was pretty shamelessly put together for drama and had nothing to do with the clothes - none of them were that great and the winning team was the worst! The hell? It was just plain black lingerie with shirt collars.

It's not just about clothes, of course. And this episode was explicitly about something else, with all of the changed rules, the anti-couture project choice, the client meeting, the group dynamics/timeframe emphasis, and calling out Santino by comparing him to a litany of designers that in any other environment would be a huge compliment.

But if you want a conspiracy theory, here's mine - they wanted to get rid of one of the Daniels to stop with the initial-appendage, and the Daniel F story arc had run its course.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

and add to the list above the fact that the least adventurous team won

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

the "most adventurous" team had the worst lingerie though!

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

gabbneb, sounds good to me. i just figured they thought that daniel f "had his chance" and thus should be the one to go, even though santino quite spectacularly failed this challenge. didn't heidi 'auf wiedersehen' people last season for less? considering that santino both copped out by blaming emmett *and* completely compromised his "vision" to the point where the whole thing was obviously crap, he should have been the one to go in my eyes.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Thursday, 22 December 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm over Santino after last night (and after Tim pointed out in his podcast that Santino was arguing with the judges on the runway for 90 minutes). All I could think when I saw his looks was "Don't be shtupid, be a shmartie, come on, join the Nazi Party!"

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Thursday, 22 December 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

no shit? i gotta check out that podcast...

heywood jablomi (heywood), Thursday, 22 December 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Santino's designs looked like a bottle of Jagermeister had come to life and vomited on some models.

IN UR BASE KILLING ALL UR DUDES (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 22 December 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

yeah not to mention
the huge sucking-up of his
collection's title

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 23 December 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

What the podcast? Where is this Morley? xpost

regular roundups (Dave M), Friday, 23 December 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

90 minutes???!! I thought he was pretty belligerent but that's out of control.

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 23 December 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

Link to TIm Gunn's podcast essential.

I wonder what his agreement with Parsons is; is the publicity for the school a plus enough to override the stigma of faculty starring on a reality show?

Though everyone they have on the show is fairly professional, Nina Garci, Michael Cors, Parker Posey; except for that blank fellow lingerie model last week who sounded as if she had to be fed all of her lines.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 23 December 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)

whoops, it's on http://www.bravotv.com/Project_Runway_2/index.shtml
under "Tim's Take"

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Friday, 23 December 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

this might be better-http://www.bravotv.com/Project_Runway_2/Episodes/Episode_4/Tims_Take/podcast.shtml

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Friday, 23 December 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

So I haven't seen the episode set to air at 10:00. It's new, no?

Maria :D (Maria D.), Thursday, 5 January 2006 02:07 (twenty years ago)

Who else is watching with me?

Maria :D (Maria D.), Thursday, 5 January 2006 02:08 (twenty years ago)

We actually just lost our TV but gained a small loaner. I better check that it works.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Thursday, 5 January 2006 02:09 (twenty years ago)

Are all male fashion designers annoying? The women seem to have good taste, generally pleasant personalities, etc., the dudes are all major drama queens with stupid looking haircuts and facial hair.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Thursday, 5 January 2006 02:14 (twenty years ago)

My fave is still the gay guy. He reminds me of lots of close friends, being the fag hag I am.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Thursday, 5 January 2006 02:19 (twenty years ago)

I think I am in love with Daniel Vosovic. Oh, the dreamy hair!

Petra Ellenshaw, Thursday, 5 January 2006 08:08 (twenty years ago)

What exactly does Marla have to do to get eliminated? Lupe was going to get eliminated at some point no matter what, even though she seemed cool to me, but Marla must have a deal with the devil or something.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 5 January 2006 08:26 (twenty years ago)

Marla is shaping up to be the Jayla of Project Runway, isn't she?

Petra Ellenshaw, Thursday, 5 January 2006 08:34 (twenty years ago)

Jayla had a much better rack.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Thursday, 5 January 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

"the gay guy" = uh, which one?

I totally called this..
Dear Nicky Hilton & the entire cast of Project Runway:

If Santino thinks your cool
Does that mean everything to you?
If you think Santino is cool and you
Think that he thinks that
You're not that cool
Does that mean everything to you?

arrgh! He is painfully cool and cool is annoying the hell out of me lately, and I kind of wish he weren't so talented because he tries so hard to be cool, but he is.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

he's not very cool, he's a whiny baby and his stuff is getting less interesting every week (still very well-made, though), i thought that dress was frightful

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm all about some Daniel V. oh, Lord. Seriously, though, who owes Marla a favor so big that she continues to stay? She straight-up copied that dress and it still sucked (although it could have been the fact that she has the World's Worst Model that made it suck more). At least Lupe's was original, though busy (and I don't understand where she got the idea that it was "Japanese-influenced" because then it would be simple and not have five hundred detachable flowers on it).

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:19 (twenty years ago)

http://www.santinorice.com/

get him to post here!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:36 (twenty years ago)

and what about diana's dress? i thought it was gorgeous, nobody seemed to find it very exciting though.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

"The women seem to have good taste, generally pleasant personalities, etc."

lolololololololololololololololololololol NO.

I GUARONTEE ::cajun voice:: (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

diana's dress was hideous!!! and I LIKE diana, she's cute and mousy, but she's terrible at everything and someone should lop her changwhore hands off.

santino is zod.

http://www.neurobashing.com/blog/images/President-Zod.jpg

I GUARONTEE ::cajun voice:: (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

does anyone doubt that Santino and Chloe will be 2 of the 3?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:53 (twenty years ago)

ha - Tim says Emmett has a "high taste level"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:54 (twenty years ago)

actually the top of diane's dress wasn't that bad, but she didn't really follow through on them shits.

I GUARONTEE ::cajun voice:: (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:54 (twenty years ago)

chloe's probably gonna be top three, but I could see it being a toss-up between her and vosavic (his dress was BONERFIED last night, though maybe it helped that the model had a nice ass). it's definately gonna be a santino/nick showdown (with nick taking it in the end, i think)

I GUARONTEE ::cajun voice:: (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

so to speak

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:01 (twenty years ago)

Diana is too infatuated with her own nerdiness, uh, it could be getting in the way of her talent. drink more! I liked her dress, maybe Isabella Blow or Bjork would wear it.

Yeah Santino is whiny + has zero tact, it's just fascinating that he's got such a big presence and you have to wonder if any of the other designers will get up the nerve to call bullshit on him one of these days.

I don't like Chloe's dresses one bit. I see how she is talented, this is a matter of personal taste. I really hate that shade of blue with jet black! this goes for Nick's dress too.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I agree about the Nick-Santino showdown. Chloe will probably round out the final three. As much as I'd like to see Daniel V. up there (or at least in my bed), I don't think that's going to happen.

What do you guys think about Grace, Chloe's model? With that schnozz, it's hard to believe she's made it this far in the industry, but I find it strangely alluring. In fact, she's the only model I find the least bit memorable.

Petra Ellenshaw, Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

chloe's good-ish, but she's basically made the same dress a couple times in a row now. it's a good dress, but still. i wanna see more before i really decide.

I GUARONTEE ::cajun voice:: (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:10 (twenty years ago)

xpost to petra

no, that's just not true
nick and santino and daniel
have such hot models!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:10 (twenty years ago)

santino's insufferable, but i do like the fact that he argued with the judges for 90 minutes. i liked that he really thought he knew more than them and wasn't afraid to press the issue, instead of the usual chopping block routine of contestants-hanging-head-in-shame-while-garcia-sneers-at-them.

and yeah, this is really the most turdy looking group of models I've seen since... well, this season of ANTM. chloe's birdlady is growing on me a little.

http://www2.uol.com.br/eliana/media/chihiro02_240303_m.jpg

I GUARONTEE ::cajun voice:: (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)

nick's model is amazing. she's from north carolina! my friend kind of knows her. :'(

I GUARONTEE ::cajun voice:: (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

my boyfriend also made the santino/zod connection! weird.

i like chloe usually but the dress she made last night looked almost exactly like her "clothes off your back" dress.

i still like diana though i think at this point it's fairly safe to say at this point that i'm rooting for nick to win all around. santino is starting to bug me but dude's still way talented

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

- one of those "at this point"s

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

My favorite dress of last night was Daniel V's. I really liked the pattern. I wonder what it would have looked like if he didn't screw up and get the brown fabric instead of the black.

I like Chloe as a personality but her dresses leave me a bit cold. They look like things that I could conceivably wear--very clean and simple--and I expect more fantasy from my Project Runaways.

Heidi Klum is the cutest pregnant woman ever. I think this is partly because she sticks to traditional pregnant-lady wear: billowy, flowing tops, rather than the recent in-fashion stomach-hugging styles, but also, she is just damn cute.

The Legend of Tony Balls (Adrian Langston), Friday, 6 January 2006 01:11 (twenty years ago)

Not sure how I feel about Heidi Klum. Maybe I just need to see her lash out at the contestants ala Tyra Banks in ATNM cycle 4. "LEARN FROM THIS!!!"

Petra Ellenshaw, Friday, 6 January 2006 01:13 (twenty years ago)

I should have gone to her H'ween party a few years back when I had the chance

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 6 January 2006 01:14 (twenty years ago)

Damn, the other designer got jobbed in the lingerie episode. I call conspiracy - gotta keep the guy with personality, no matter how fugly his designs and how weak his justification. Then he threw Josh Homme under the bus.

santino's insufferable, but i do like the fact that he argued with the judges for 90 minutes. i liked that he really thought he knew more than them and wasn't afraid to press the issue, instead of the usual chopping block routine of contestants-hanging-head-in-shame-while-garcia-sneers-at-them.

It reminded me of too many critiques where one petulant, frustrated artiste goes off when a professor or student says anything bad. YOU JUST DIDN'T GET MY VISION. Sometimes you have to admit that your work sucked.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 6 January 2006 04:45 (twenty years ago)

Just watched the Nicky Hilton show. It must be depressing for all these people, some of whom have had real fashion jobs, some of whom have real talent, to have to sit there and listen to the socialite ditz critique their work. Too bad she loved Santino's dress, that could have been a great shouting match.

Daniel's dress was the hottest, but it didn't look high-class, more like something a woman could get at an upscale mall (perhaps because it actually seemed wearable, something you could sell, like his lingerie - he's not artsy enough ala Santino to last).

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Sunday, 8 January 2006 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Diana's dress was awesome, and I'm saying this as someone with extra trunk junk. Y'all are just ILM-backlashing her 'cause she didn't know who Stevie Nicks was

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Sunday, 8 January 2006 23:07 (twenty years ago)

I like Diana
better than her clothes I guess.
Who IS Stevie Nicks?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 8 January 2006 23:28 (twenty years ago)

did you guys know that daniel franco is straight?? that shit is rocking my world right now!!!!!!

The Legend of Tony Balls (Adrian Langston), Monday, 9 January 2006 02:22 (twenty years ago)

I was more surprised to read that Emmett is gay. I had him and Daniel V. pegged as the closet heteros.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Monday, 9 January 2006 02:28 (twenty years ago)

"Lovemaking. How is that wrong?"- Daniel F's last words
Only a new age straight guy would say "lovemaking"

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 9 January 2006 02:30 (twenty years ago)

of course Daniel F is straight. he's so female-identified. and I accurately pegged Santino as liking women regardless of any other preference.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 9 January 2006 02:32 (twenty years ago)

I just looked at Santino's website and there is a photo of him wearing a fez, which is possibly more excellent than his custom made 5 inch stiletto heels. but why you have to be so aggro, dude?

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 9 January 2006 03:58 (twenty years ago)

Santino likes girls? Whoa.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 9 January 2006 04:28 (twenty years ago)

i'm watching last week's for the first time. Dirty Diana! well, we knew she was kinda hot.

i think i'm a little disappointed in how muh this season is playing up the personality/business angles. are they focusing less on vision because there's more of it?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 03:46 (twenty years ago)

I missed the first couple of episodes, but thankfully Bravo is rerunning them ad infinitum so I have been able to catch up. I totally missed the previous season. How did I avoid getting sucked into this show before??

Jen (nstop), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 07:24 (twenty years ago)

LOL WHEN DIANA & MARLA WERE WORKING TOGETHER IT LOOKED LIKE TWO RETARDED KIDS LEARNING TO FINGERPAINT

The Legend of Tony Balls (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 12 January 2006 04:06 (twenty years ago)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 12 January 2006 04:09 (twenty years ago)

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 12 January 2006 04:19 (twenty years ago)

OMG NEXT WEEKS EPISODE. its like the convergence of my two lives -- that of a competitive figure skater [and technically, still a teammate of sascha cohen's, the focus of next week's challenge, as i still pay my SCNY membership] and that of an art school student.

OH MY GOD. PROJECT RUNWAY IS IN MY MIND. I APPROVE. AND RIGHT BEFORE IT IS THE PREMEIRE OF "SKATING WITH CELEBRITIES".

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 12 January 2006 04:37 (twenty years ago)

Next week is going to be awesome. They made them wear tacky skating costumes! hooray!!!!

damn, it's in the pay archive, but..

Thursday Styles: Routine Is a 6; Outfit, A Zero

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 12 January 2006 05:01 (twenty years ago)

Just when I thought I couldn't love Daniel V. any more, he went over to Kara and kissed her in her time of need. Sensitive guys are hot.

Loved his outfit, by the way. I would totally wear that.

And what about Andrae's reaction to the window decorating assignment? That expression was priceless.

Petra Ellenshaw, Thursday, 12 January 2006 06:48 (twenty years ago)

Santino and Nick's window display was just terrible. I can't even imagine someone buying that dress at Banana Republic ever, even in 100 years.

Daniel V. is definitely the greatest. He is just so consistent every week, and yet maintains his professionalism.

It's awesome to see how Andre has progressed over the weeks. He's really stabilized things.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 12 January 2006 07:10 (twenty years ago)

they should cross this with starting over and call it project runaway.

literalisp (literalisp), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 01:27 (twenty years ago)

Surely Santino will finally get axed one of these days, right?

What did the judges like about Emmett and Chloe's design? I thought the bunched material over the chest was kind of ugly. Not as bad as Santino's or Marla/Diana's, but still bad.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 03:08 (twenty years ago)

why does everyone suddenly seem like twice as likeable?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 19 January 2006 03:22 (twenty years ago)

also, oh the roffles at costumes

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 19 January 2006 03:25 (twenty years ago)

yeah, santino was may more humble on the runway tonight!

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:37 (twenty years ago)

way

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 19 January 2006 04:37 (twenty years ago)

I, for one, will be very interested to see Zulema's "walk-off challenge" with the models. It never occurred to me that one of the winning contestants might actually use the change-your-waif privilege.

I never really liked Emmett until he said "was it the shirt?" after elimination tonight. Now I feel kind of sad for him.

Petra Ellenshaw, Thursday, 19 January 2006 07:27 (twenty years ago)

He was out of his league. Nice guy, no chance. Maybe he should have lasted another round or two, but it's no big loss.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 January 2006 07:35 (twenty years ago)

Poor Emmett.. yes, out of his league, and you didn't see much of his personality through most of the show.

Zulema's dress was kind of nifty but looked (again!) as if the construction wasn't so hot - kinda awkwardly cut and sewn, yes? I thought Nick should've won.

Santino was lucky Nina Garcia didn't judge that week. I hope he picks a big fight with Jay next week though..

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Sunday, 22 January 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Poor Emmett.. yes, out of his league, and you didn't see much of his personality through most of the show.

He's a pretty well-established designer though - he'll do OK in the end...

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 22 January 2006 23:46 (twenty years ago)

That orchid dress was ridiculous. I'm sorry.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:18 (twenty years ago)

the whole top of that dress was hideous. poofy is not flattering, and certainly not elegant like an orchid. andre should have won.

Juulia (julesbdules), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:42 (twenty years ago)

I thought the orchid ensemble was beautiful, in that haute couture, no one would actually wear this way. I have a feeling it looked amazing in person, too; the contrast between the fabric of the top and the skirt was lovely, but I bet it showed up better if you were right in front of it. Andrae's dress was really pretty, but Daniel's was cooler.

I hate Zulema so I'm glad she's gone, but Kara's dress actually made me think she'd lost her shit. was she kidding? did it take five minutes to make? I hope she's gone next week.

horseshoe, Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:49 (twenty years ago)

To be honest, I hated to orchid ensemble too, but it's just so hard for me to separate my love for Daniel V. from my love for his work. I mean, the pep talk with Nick? The "I love you"? He is the most perfect man, ever!

As for Zulema, I'm glad she's gone too. Anybody else think it's her just desserts for stealing Nick's model? I know it's part of the game and all, but isn't it an unspoken rule that you just don't stir up tension by actually taking another designer's model?

Petra Ellenshaw, Thursday, 26 January 2006 05:16 (twenty years ago)

Anybody else think it's her just desserts for stealing Nick's model?

what a brilliant theory!

I was disappointed in this one. I'll buy taking Zulema over Kara on construction grounds, but this episdoe wasn't about construction. The drama orientation is becoming more and more transparent (liking making Andrae the nutball upfront so it's more dramatic when he makes it to top 3 (?)).

I'm liking Santino more as a dude as he starts to come down to earth. the foreshadowing suggests he's gone next time around.

I thought Daniel's dress was very nice.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 26 January 2006 05:22 (twenty years ago)

Zulema's outfits have always been badly constructed, is the thing. Kara's at least fit.. plus Z's inspiration for the dress was.. a dress.

I couldn't believe Santino picked the Austin fabric. same trajectory as Austin, in a way.

I also couldn't believe how trite lots of people were.. "I like, uh, juxtaposing like, pretty with ugly, right, and like taking something street, and making it couture." Nobody ever thought of THAT before, eh?

Daniel V rightful winner. That dress was great!

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 26 January 2006 05:49 (twenty years ago)

LOL at "Designers... Rock the Casbah"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 26 January 2006 06:30 (twenty years ago)

Ha. I did find Santino endearing this episode. He's so much more likable when he's humble....and I actually like his high-waisted creations.

Petra Ellenshaw, Thursday, 26 January 2006 06:46 (twenty years ago)

dar1a g, those photos!!

I really expected Kara to be gone. I find Andrae insufferable, but his was the only garment I liked. I'm surprised the producers didn't advise the judges to keep Zulema in, for drama. Kara must be gone next week. I loved Daniel's pep talk. It must be great for those dudes to get together with other dudes who are into fashion design. I love that Nick picked himself up. I love that the fact that the model Zulema chose was black (and not "marshmallow") did not come into play at all. I love Santino's impressions of Tim Gunn. I love Daniel, although I didn't like the poofy thing tonight. You know they always pick him first to interrogate or chide because they know he can handle it best. Jay's building-inspired dress from last season was so much better than
Chloe's. Who's going to watch Project Jay?

Maria :D (Maria D.), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:06 (twenty years ago)

Freaky coincidence that Santino picked the same fabric -- I don't think he was influenced by Austin - but he is this season's Austin.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:12 (twenty years ago)

I love how smily everyone always is when Heidi walks out toting her child in utero. It's like an US Weekly Bump Watch to see how her bun is baking. I know it's too obvious, but I wish they would do a maternity wear challenge.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:13 (twenty years ago)

i liked tim gunn's freakout about the model switch. "she's an elongated marshmallow!"

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 26 January 2006 07:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm so pissed that Zulema had to take Tarrah down with her. Tarrah is like easily the most gorgeous model there, and the second best walker( Top 3: 1. Grace 2. Tarrah 3. Rebecca), and I was really rooting for her and Nick. Ugh.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 26 January 2006 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Last night was the first time I've watched. I'm iinto it. I want to sew some weird-ass dresses, too!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 26 January 2006 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Grace is awesome. if I were on there I'd steal her from Chloe immediately.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 26 January 2006 18:41 (twenty years ago)

What do you want to bet Santino has secret goth shame?

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:03 (twenty years ago)

Zulema's dress was cruddy, but Kara's was absolutely horrendous. I can't believe she's made it this far. Apart from her earlier meltdown when she was partnered with Zulema, she's not worth keeping around for drama purposes, even.

It's sweet that Daniel took the time to talk Nick out of his crabby pants. I tend to like Nick's designs the best (except for last night), but Daniel's are a close second. I like Chloe's stuff as well, although I wish she would broaden her color palette a bit.

Chris K (Chris K), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Kara did a very nice dress for the Nicky Hilton episode.. but yeah, I don't see her making it to the top three..

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:14 (twenty years ago)

What do you want to bet Santino has secret goth shame?

Hahaha "secret"????

I liked Kara's dress even if it was boring and had fuck-all to do with the picture she picked. In terms of concept, no one except for Daniel or Andre should have won but in terms of wearability, it was all about Andre and Kara.

Dan (Someone Stab Santino) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:19 (twenty years ago)

grace's pointy shoulders scare me. tarrah was the best model, that sucked

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Daniel V. now has more wins than anyone. I hadn't really liked him because his first few designs were lackluster (and his ratty hipster hair) but he's been consistent. And he's sweet. His audition video is adorable, too.

Chris NTM (near the mark) re: Kara's dress, but I think "absolutley horrendous" understates it. Tired old design, Kara's just wrapped barricade tape randomly about it. She's much less annoying than Zulema but she deserved to go.

Maybe it's me, but I think the designs this year are, overall, less interesting than last year. These last few weeks, anyway.

Fun H8er, Friday, 27 January 2006 01:06 (twenty years ago)

I wish I had gotten in to last season because I'm intrigued by "Austin's Grammy Party Dress" or whatever Jay called it.

Also, am I right in saying that Daniel V. is probably the most all-around well-liked of the bunch...not to mention the most consistent? I think he's got a pretty good chance at winning, so I'm reforming my top three pick: Daniel-Chloe-Nick. Santino's on his last leg.

Is it just me, or is it really hard to find information about season 1 on bravotv.com? Where can I see photos like that?

I got that photo directly from the official season 1 website.

I don't think the season two site actually has links to the first season, I actually stumbled across this while doing an image search.

Fun H8er, Friday, 27 January 2006 06:44 (twenty years ago)

Was Daniel Vosovik adorable tonight or what? I didn't think much of him in the beginning, but he continues to grow on me. He's got such a great personality... he'd be like the perfect boyfriend, I think. *swoons*

I think Chloe's dress was the best, and she deserved immunity if only for the fact that she put the most effort into her garment (people are complaining that it was too "plain," but I think it was nice and simple.. but not too simple, I like how the lavender belt thingy offsetted the main pattern.. added a bit of flare). But Daniel is a sweetheart, so I'm not complaining. Sad to see Andrae go.. surprised with Kara's design.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 2 February 2006 04:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah.. Daniel is so sweet. and I love the dress he made. at this point it's hard to even figure who'll make the last 3. I think Chloe, Daniel, and Nick.. but might be Kara. Not Santino.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 2 February 2006 04:40 (twenty years ago)

Whoa... a week or two ago I never would have imagined that Andrae and Nick would be the last two on the runway. But Nick's was the worst. Andrae's could have been passable if it had been better fitted and a little less bulky.

Wouldn't have shed a tear for Santino, if he'd gone. This was better than the last few weeks but still not attractive.

Kara's was a shock. Reminds me of Wendy from last season. Just when you think someone's awfulness and lack of talent is undeniable, they come out of nowhere with something lovely and special. Her dress was my favorite. The close-up shots of the bodice were spectacular.

All this Daniel V. love on this thread... He seems to be a sweetheart but it's ridiculous that he now has two more wins than anyone else. His first few designs were lame and the day-night dress is the only one of his recent designs worth getting enthused about. Plus he has stupid hair and his model is a gorgon.

Gah, this is a frustrating show.

fun h8er, Thursday, 2 February 2006 07:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm still pissed at trampycakes Zulema for getting the hottest model booted.

Pregnant Heidi Klum looks hideous as all pregnant women in the history of humanity do - pregnancy is fucking repellant and disgusting and I hate babies and I hate new mothers, I hate all mothers but my own and maybe some of my friends mothers and I don't care if this targets certain races or classes, in fact I hope it would. Fuck you.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Thursday, 2 February 2006 09:12 (twenty years ago)

I've been pretty iffy on Vosavic for a while now, I felt that most of the love being directed at him was bcz he's so attractive and pleasant. My first impression of him as a designer was that he was the most consistent, in that he didn't really excel but he didn't bomb either. Except that he IS excelling, far beyond any of the other contestants. Maybe he's not an extraordinary, unique voice, but his instincts are excellent. From a boner-related perspective I appreciate his work a lot as well, as he's the only one who seems to view his (ogreish) model as more than a human clothes rack - his designs are very complimentary to her and in general seem more uh female friendly than a lot of the others.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Thursday, 2 February 2006 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Santino would be 10000000x better as a judge than a contestant.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Thursday, 2 February 2006 09:24 (twenty years ago)

Wow, this episode shocked me...never thought it would be Nick and Andrae in the bottom two. Forgive me, but I actually thought it was Nick's time to go. Andrae's dress last week was amazing. Maybe he had an off-night this week, but Nick's been pretty blah two weeks in a row. If the judges' good graces keep letting Santino slip by (inexplicably), then how can a relatively good designer like Andrae be axed by one challenge?

I thought this was Kara's week to go...in fact, a part of me didn't want to tune in because I thought it was so obvious. But she really surprised me. Her dress was great.

Yes, I do love Daniel Vosovic, but I have to admit I think Chloe should have won this week. Regardless, I'm happy to know he's got immunity...even though considering his record we all knew he'd make it to the top 4 anyway.

Petra Ellenshaw, Thursday, 2 February 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Kara's very talented, I think, just not having the easiest time dealing with some of the challenges?

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 2 February 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

I thought Kara's party dress for Nicky Hilton was spectacular, so yeah.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 2 February 2006 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Andre and Nick both dropped the ball this week, but the competition's concept was ludicrous. How do you eliminate a fashion designer because they don't make an amazing dress out of leaves in one day?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 2 February 2006 17:38 (twenty years ago)

i was kind of annoyed at the judges saying "i expected more flowers". have these people ever been in a garden? if they knew what the fuck they were talking about, they'd know there's more foliage than flowers.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 2 February 2006 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Also, do they realize that flowers cost a lot of money compared to leaves and that the designers have a limited budget?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:08 (twenty years ago)

I loved Chloe's dress. I also liked how Kara helped Chloe: girl power. I don't know how Kara pulled that off--maybe she got some Project Runway secret assistance.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:17 (twenty years ago)

santino was classic in this episode. I finally started to like him again; also, I thought their criticisms that his dress was too shiny were really dumb.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 3 February 2006 23:57 (twenty years ago)

Santino is hilarious. His newfound humbleness suits him well. I was sad to see Andre go, because his facial expressions were weekly highlights of the show.

I would have given Nick the boot. His designs are consistently uninspiring in exactly the way a fashion school teacher's would be. Like he knows how to make a decent design and execute it well, but the designs are totally by the book.

Super Cub (Debito), Saturday, 4 February 2006 00:02 (twenty years ago)

i was kind of annoyed at the judges saying "i expected more flowers"

Me too. And if they did use flowers then Michael Kors would criticize everyone's dresses for looking like a Rose Parade float.

Additionally, they went to a plant store for their materials - not a full-blown flower shop.

available for free at Banana Republic - Project Runway The Magazine, from the publishers of Elle. the current (second, post-episode 6) edition includes, in addition to over-the-top advertising/product placement...

- brief episode recaps and photos of all designs thus far
- a bit of behind the scenes
- why (supposedly) Nina was not present for episode 4
- pics of Heidi's maternity wear, from the house of Kara Saun, and guide to Nina's accessories
- makup tips from Heidi
- some old photos of the designers, including New Romantic Emmett, star shortstop Jay McCarroll and an early Diana halloween costume (priceless)
- 8 designers' POXes (Emmett is both 'tasteful' and has the best taste, Nick is bad-global-dance-snooze, Santino may be the funniest, and Chloe is the most alt and on the cutesy side of hott)
- Heidi's favorite NYC sushi spots and Michael Kors' taste in literature
- the floating head of Tim Gunn

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 4 February 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

and I have changed my mind on some fronts. Nick has fallen out of favor again, and my heart is no longer hardened to Nina. Daniel V is a nice boy, and Chloe a nice girl, and one of them is probably going to win, deservedly, but I am rooting for Santino.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 4 February 2006 21:24 (twenty years ago)

I like Nick as a person but I see how.. well.. he is rather a trend follower and cares waaaaaayyyyy too much about what LA socialites want to wear.

I'm sick of Santino..

dar1a g (daria g), Saturday, 4 February 2006 22:58 (twenty years ago)

I would like to see, just once, a competition where they were each given enough time to finish their piece. Like, give them two days and 500$ just once, just to see what they do with it.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 5 February 2006 04:59 (twenty years ago)

they did that on the cut but they still managed to fuck their pieces up.

tehresa (tehresa), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:01 (twenty years ago)

this is great! Kara rules it. Santino has no idea what's going on.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 9 February 2006 03:37 (twenty years ago)

except...the jumpsuit Santino made for Kara was hideous, right? I mean, I understood the judges' critiques of Nick's suit, but that jumpsuit was so unflattering and awful on her. also, his concept was "sexy jumpsuit"...what the fuck?

horsehoe (horseshoe), Thursday, 9 February 2006 04:41 (twenty years ago)

there is no such thing as a sexy jumpsuit, unless you are julie newmar as catwoman.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 9 February 2006 05:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah, he specifically used the phrase "amazing jumpsuit" when talking to kara about it, and i think that's the first time i have ever heard those two words used together in a sentence.

wtf @ dan v's snarky comments to the judges? i guess the immunity thing did go to his head a little.

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 9 February 2006 06:19 (twenty years ago)

just thin-skinned I think, never done this poorly and doesn't know how to take it

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 9 February 2006 06:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't like the bitchy new Daniel.

Let's not kid ourselves, Santino deserved to go home but Nick didn't exactly do a good job, nor did he the last few weeks.

Also, where the hell did Cara come from? She has really improved since the yellow stripe debacle.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 February 2006 07:11 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was really surprised with Kara's showing too.

About Daniel: I don't think his comments to the judges were necessarily "snarky." I really think, as Haikunym pointed out, that he was trying to be humble but didn't know how to do it. This is, after all, his first really poor showing--what's with Heidi wanting to give him her Auf Wiedersehen? After four wins, and among two designers who have been on thin ice for weeks? Doesn't make sense to me...I'm just glad he had immunity.

Petra Ellenshaw, Thursday, 9 February 2006 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Kara did some nice pieces prior to this, though - the Nicky Hilton dress she made was fantastic. also she is pretty good at working with difficult people (Zulema, Santino).

I didn't think Daniel came off as bitchy.

Nick, though - wtf! that suit was bad in every possible way. nothing worse than a bad suit.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 9 February 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Kara's outfit for Santino would've sucked if it weren't for the fact that Santino totally helped her with it.

p.j. (Henry), Thursday, 9 February 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Nonsense! How can that be?

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 9 February 2006 18:56 (twenty years ago)

was nick's outfit for daniel really that bad? i saw the seam problem, but otherwise it looked great to me. i guess i just don't know men's suits very well, it didn't even strike me as terribly feminine because i'm ignorant. i was sorry to see him go, anyway.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 9 February 2006 18:59 (twenty years ago)

santino was going on about how he picked out the fabrics, suggested the plaid in that way, etc.

but i figured he was just being santino and full of himself, taking more credit than was due.

i didn't think nick's outfit for daniel was that bad either, except for the construction. the seams were puckering all over the place.

Juulia (julesbdules), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Kara is way, way better than you guys are making her out to be.

Dan (Then Again I Liked The Construction Dress) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Daniel looked like like he was in an yaoi manga. (Kara got good all of a sudden--I don't know what happened.) I like how the two girls are cooperative versus snarky.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:04 (twenty years ago)

I didn't *like* the construction dress so much, but the fit was beautiful. The thing about Kara is everything she does is beautifully constructed and fits perfectly & that is so important, she's just not wild and flashy, in general. I bet she will do a brilliant collection if she makes it to fashion week.. I hope they get rid of Santino next week. he is so this season's Austin.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I will admit that I may be biased against Kara's designs because she's such a crazy. I never understand anything that comes out of her mouth. Plus, remember when she said she was going to cut Daniel Franco's "pee-pee" off? Just typing that creeps me out all over again. She's...not right.

horsehoe (horseshoe), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

he is so this season's Austin.

So OTM it hurts.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Who will be in the final 3? Chloe and Daniel V. seem to be locks, unless he fucks up again next week. Seems unlikely, he was just coasting this week because he could. If Santino doesn't break out of this stupor he's been in the last few weeks and Kara does as well as she's done the last two, it'll be Kara! I never would have imagined she'd be top 3. In the first few weeks, it seemed like Nick and Santino would be locks. Ha.

I'm rooting for Chloe to win it all. Daniel V. has done some very nice work, but Chloe has the most cohesive, distinct, and appealing style. But if Santino makes top 3, he could do a lot with all that extra time they have to design their collections.

Father Brian Eno, Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Just about everything Austin did was vaguely annoying, but I've really loved at least a few things Santino's done. I think if he got the chance to do a collection it'd be a lot more interesting than anything Austin would have done.

Father Brian Eno, Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

The main thing that separates Chloe and Daniel for me is that Daniel's model is just a lot more appealing. Daniel's model really sells it well, and I think that gives him a huge edge. I mean, Daniel finished last this week by all accounts and his model was Chloe, who can't walk down the runway to save her life.

I wonder if Cara or Chloe or Santino or Nick would have grabbed Andrae's model if they had a chance.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Whaaa? Daniel's model is terrifying. Evil borg face.

None of designers were very good walkers.

Father Brian Eno, Thursday, 9 February 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Omigod, the Ice Breaker bonus video on the bravo site is so hilarious.

Father Brian Eno, Thursday, 9 February 2006 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Nick should have done that finger-snappy walk he does during the opening credits. That might've distracted the judges from that hobo suit Andre put him in.

p.j. (Henry), Thursday, 9 February 2006 20:11 (twenty years ago)

pj when you say Nick do you mean Daniel? When you say Andre do you mean Nick?

I LOVE Daniel's model.

I think Nick is a great walker, personally. The rest were bad, but Chloe was terrible.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 February 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

I like Chloe's model, Grace. Daniel's model is cool, it's funny, she seems to naturally have that.. uh.. 80's power-bitch look kind of going on, so maybe it helps the guys to have a model like that so they don't have to overcompensate by making power-bitchy kinda clothes. (I don't know why they like this look but they do, it seems.)

About the stuff Kara says, I think she just has a goofy sense of humor & for a long while wasn't taking the show too seriously, is helped by not being invested in this "I'm here to win" thing like so many others. maybe it helps to not be American. I was pretty amused by how she really played Santino's egocentrism to help make that outfit come together, and then was like "umm.. take him with a grain of salt."

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:14 (twenty years ago)

"Then Again I Liked The Construction Dress"

what.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:22 (twenty years ago)

The silhouette of that black dress was gorgeous and it looked like it was well put together as opposed to haphazardly slapped together. The yellow stripe was maybe a little obvious but not a total crime. Really, the big problem with that dress is that it was clearly inspired by another one of the construction photos she took as opposed to the one she showed the judges.

Dan (Also Nothing And No One Was Worse Than Zulema And Marla) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:30 (twenty years ago)

The biggest problem with that dress was that it was just a tube with a yellow stripe on it.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:32 (twenty years ago)

"just"

Dan (Simplicity: Underrated) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:32 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah. disliking Kara does not by any means=defending Zulema or Marla.

the black tube dress was just so...it was like the actual "inspiration" thing never happened in Kara's head. unless inspiration just means copying. both Tim Gunn and Michael Kors were totally right when they said it was too literal-minded.

also, remember when she spent, like, an hour trying to retrieve her barbie hat from behind an elevator? crazy insane.

horsehoe (horseshoe), Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:36 (twenty years ago)

I just don't get you guyz sometimes :'(. danny's model looks like hagar the horrible. also santino is clearly this year's wendy peppers, he'll make it to the final three just to generate drama. i can't wait for next week's ep, when jay AND vosavic bitch him out.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:37 (twenty years ago)

I think Kara's construction-zone dress could have been attractive and not overly-simple while retaining the same essential concept/expression. But the yellow-bar design just didn't have the grace of the silhouette. It reminded me of that old Andre Agassi shirt with the neon orange vertical bars. And it didn't help that her concept was essentially "I don't fit into your big scary fashion world." And yes, Santino clearly picked a good portion of her design out for her. The reason she made much of it was that he picked a theme that played to her sporty/grunge aesthetic.

As wrong as Santino behaved, Nick was the least pleasant one standing.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:43 (twenty years ago)

And yes, Santino clearly picked a good portion of her design out for her

this week, that is

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:43 (twenty years ago)

both Tim Gunn and Michael Kors were totally right when they said it was too literal-minded.

otm. it was galling to me that she actually said it "spoke volumes". that caution dress was simply unacceptable. MAYBE it would fly in a salt n' pepa video, but that's pushing it too (snarf). i love simple possibly more than anything, chloe's got the right idea with her clean line obsession (she can be pretty boring too tho), but this shit was str8 catatonic. if you took away the retarded tape you'd have a dress that you could buy ANYWHERE.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I like the fact that each of the four remaining have very different styles. I think Nick's style and Daniel's style were really similar, in that they shoot for sleek and very feminine, so I'm not sad about Nick being gone. Chloe specializes in more modern, architectural looks, Cara goes for spunky/cute/urban, and Santino is trying (usually unsuccessfully) for something more theoretical (the jumpsuit notwithstanding). I am happy about having the potential for three very different looks on the runway at Fashion Week, whichever three are chosen.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Every now and then I like it when someone on Project Runway produces something that looks like it could be worn in public without inspiring ROFFLES.

Dan (Just Sayin') Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:53 (twenty years ago)

santino, theoretical? i just think of him as the egocentric guy who makes things waaaay overembellished usually. the jumpsuit was much more of a simple design than the other stuff i've seen by him, but FUGLY. i was surprised that he wasn't the one booted, but of course he's an interesting personality to keep around for a reality show.

Juulia (julesbdules), Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:59 (twenty years ago)

i agree with yr point, I seriously just can't imagine anyone wearing that in public WITHOUT being clowned on mercilessly! i suppose it at least can be worn comfortably (if you can live with knowing that your dress makes you look like a dancer from a huey lewis video), unlike anything santino makes.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Maybe Santino could be theoretical if he spent time thinking about anything other than himself.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:05 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) Granted, next to the average Gap dress it would look a little like it fell off of one of those stylized 80s pics that you find on the walls of cheap hair salons (Nagel?), but next to what everyone designed it was clearly the most wearable and the one that looked the most like a finished garment.

Dan (Don't Hate, Y'all) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:06 (twenty years ago)

Even though I haven't like Nick's last couple designs much, I was still sad to see him go. Santino being allowed to stay even while the sleeve was literally falling off the jumpsuit he made was akin to Wendy Pepper staying in despite not bothering to make a bottom for her bikini in the swimsuit challenge in season one. I get the fact that Santino brings a certain amount of obnoxious drama that is a necessary ingredient of reality TV, and knew from the moment he opened his mouth that he would be in the final three, no matter how much I wanted to throttle him. That said, likening him to Austin makes a lot of sense, and perhaps he'll get booted after all. The judges seem pretty fed up with him.

Chloe's design for Nick was right on, I thought. Kara has redeemed herself somewhat, but I can't see her being the winner. I reckon it'll be Chloe or Daniel.

Chris K (Chris K), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:06 (twenty years ago)

hee! that reminds me of my favorite moment from last night.

Santino: Collier could see that I've got a great jawline...

horsehoe (horseshoe), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:07 (twenty years ago)

I picked Chloe as winner from episode 2 (ie the first episode I saw).

Dan (But Don't Hate On Kara) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:09 (twenty years ago)

Chris K otm!

"if you took away the retarded tape you'd have a dress that you could buy ANYWHERE."

now that i think about it, this is probably kara's greatest strength. she's an excellent seamstress, and making sportswear from scratch (let alone sportswear that looked store-bought) is insanely hard. she just happens to be an artistic and creative failure in every sense.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

santino, theoretical?

Absolutely. He's more interested with the visual effects of the textures of his compositions than how the dresses work practically. He's making dresses that are meant to be hung on a wall, not draped on a beautiful woman. He doesn't seem to care at all about fit or clean lines. He's trying to make a Statement.

He does a bad job of it, though, so the sum of his efforts is a big mess walking down the runway on a bummed out model.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:12 (twenty years ago)

santino doesn't make v. woman-friendly clothes, which would maybe be less annoying if he didn't make THE SAME DRESS OVER AND OVER. chloe's stuff is pretty samey too, even though i like her.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:14 (twenty years ago)

The anti-Austin talk upthread is insane.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:55 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone have any information on how much Bob and Harvey have to do with the elimination process? There's that disclaimer about the producers' input and I'm a little suspicious that that Wendy's success last season and maybe Santino's this season have to do with them.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:59 (twenty years ago)

ok, i get your point, polyphonic. i guess i just think of him as a bastard (albeit amusing), and his designs as totally overdone. but theoretical makes sense when it comes to things like that hideous phoenix dress, i think it was the skating dress?

Santino: Collier could see that I've got a great jawline...

hahahaha i forgot about that, it was hilarious.

Juulia (julesbdules), Friday, 10 February 2006 00:06 (twenty years ago)

i cant seem to find any photos/news about fashion week in regards to the PR designers. at this time last year a couple photos were leaked, which is how i knew who the final four were. so frustrating!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 10 February 2006 00:27 (twenty years ago)

With Nick out, that leaves Chloe, Daniel, Kara and Santino. These must be the final four who are showing at fashion week, right? After last year's leak, they're probably doing their best to keep the PR photos out of the press.

Chris K (Chris K), Friday, 10 February 2006 00:55 (twenty years ago)

If you look on the Fashion Week website, all of the Project Runway photos are just black boxes. The thing happened a lot time ago, so it's pretty impressive that it hasn't leaked.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 10 February 2006 01:03 (twenty years ago)

The fashion show is tomorrow, guys. That's why there are black boxes.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 10 February 2006 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Whoa weird, another Fashion Week already? I didn't realize it was twice a year. The Bryant Park feels like it was like two months ago.

(all four remaining did collections so it won't spoil next week - as with last season I presume the last designer eliminated still had to show so no one would know..)

fuck it

Oh, wow, Santino's collection is nice. Better than Chloe's and infinitely better than anything I've seen him do on the show.

Not really feeling Kara's. Her colors are pretty bad.

Daniel V's designs are classy and tasteful, but I think I like Santino's better.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 10 February 2006 23:20 (twenty years ago)

sadly, all photos appear to be from the front. I was hoping to see how Daniel V. framed his primary model's ass this time.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 10 February 2006 23:22 (twenty years ago)

yeah, santino's looks much more wearable than the stuff he did on the few episodes of the show i've seen!

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 10 February 2006 23:32 (twenty years ago)

Chloe's looks incredible.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 10 February 2006 23:39 (twenty years ago)

That red gown from Santino's collection is ace. And that teal (?) gown from Chloe's collection with that crazy back is amazing.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 10 February 2006 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Play, after looking at the pics I'd rank them:

1. Chloe Dao
2. Santino Rice/Kara Janx (tie)
4. Danny V

Surprisingly, Daniel's is very boring. Kara actually has her own disctinct style.. wow. And Santino.. wow!!

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 10 February 2006 23:52 (twenty years ago)

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 10 February 2006 23:54 (twenty years ago)

I like some of Kara's quite a bit. beautiful fit, and I like the colors. it's really hard to tell. some of this stuff might be tons better or worse than it looks from the photographs.

I do not like Santino's collection at all.

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 10 February 2006 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Kara's wasn't bad, but it didn't seem cohesive enough, and was too flashy. Fashion week fashion is crazy, from what I gather, but hers was pretty 'out there' compared to the other three.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 10 February 2006 23:58 (twenty years ago)

It's OK. Definitely the nicest piece there. I just don't get the aesthetic. I hate that peachy mauve palette, somehow, it looks dated to me, not fresh, actually he is very very conservative as a designer. the interesting thing to me about Kara's stuff is, I look at it and think, that looks like so much fun, suddenly I kind of want that look - and normally, I would never think of myself as wanting or wearing that look at all.

dar1a g (daria g), Saturday, 11 February 2006 00:11 (twenty years ago)

cool!

dar1a g (daria g), Saturday, 11 February 2006 00:14 (twenty years ago)

I think Santino is the clear winner (which doesn't mean I think he won)

Chloe has one very nice piece, and one that comes close, but I don't like the style of the collection at all. Very disappointing.

Daniel's collection is rather, well, handsome, and the most Banana Republic of the bunch.

Kara's stuff is often cute, but she doesn't seem to on the same level as the others

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 11 February 2006 01:12 (twenty years ago)

result was a foregone conclusion (xp). I liked the extra judging attention and focus on the work/ideas in this one. And yay for the return of J and KS. I loved Jay's Santino-trash-talking.

I really find Daniel annoying now. So self-serious. And so, well, white-bread. Bring back Andrae, please. At least Kara gets that the Santino shtick is a (pretty explicit) defense mechanism/stress reliever.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 16 February 2006 04:22 (twenty years ago)

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 16 February 2006 04:29 (twenty years ago)

Daniel's snark is gettinga bit annoying, no?

Anyway, it sucks that ever5yone turned on Chloe. But.. you know.. this whole episode left me with a "meh" feeling. My ideal top 3 would have been:

1. Uncle Nick
2. Chloe
3. Andrae

That would have been a truly interesting fashion show. Kara seemed to have lost her individuality while on the show, but I'm glad that she made it to the top 4 and got to show off that delightful collection at Fashion Week. Everyone is hating on Chloe's collection, which totally baffles me because it's easily the best to my eyes (followed my Kara). Daniel and Santino are so one note. I mean, I don't know much about fashion, so perhaps Daniel's designs are "deceptively simple," but it's just so BORING. He'd fit right in with Banana Republic.

Predictions for the winner anyone?

It's become apparent to me that Chloe isn't going to win, so I think it's going to go to Daniel unfortunately. *sighs*

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 16 February 2006 05:14 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i'm kind of mad that the designs were all so uninteresting this week that i had to root for santino's crazy tambourine dress

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 16 February 2006 05:16 (twenty years ago)

I liked the conception of Chloe's dress quite a bit, though the top didn't quite do it for me. I take Santino's "pattern-maker" point, but his style isn't mine, or Chloe's.

my top 3 would have been Santino, Chloe, Andrae

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 16 February 2006 05:21 (twenty years ago)

Yes indeed, the designs were BOOOORRRRINNNGG this week. As was the outcome. As are the actual collections, from what I can tell.* They all seem so tepid- and amateurish (as cheap a shot as that is)- compared to the spring collections of *ahem* real designers.

The way they all turned on my girl Chloe. Chloe in the last two! What a bunch of self-important twits, judges and competitors alike. Daniel V. is so overrated in every respect that I'll be tuning in to the final episode purely in hopes of seeing him get his comeuppance. (Yeah right.)

I'm pissed that I ever cared so much about this show. Boo hiss.

*I haven't looked at them with any degree of thoroughness, I'm trying to preserve some element of surprise.

Father Brian Eno (Father Brian Eno), Thursday, 16 February 2006 09:51 (twenty years ago)

that emmy dress fiasco was horrible.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 24 February 2006 05:27 (twenty years ago)

The Santino-impression sequence, plus Andrae-the-Musical were the (intentionally) funniest things I've seen on tv in a very long time. And Daniel's chilling-out-a-bit plus laughing-at-Santino warmed me to him again.

Project Jay was interesting, but a little underwhelming.

I wondered how they'd play out the finale over two weeks. That's kind of brutal to make them all do another last minute challenge.

OK, uh, I like Santino again. Tell me that guy was never sort of goth or at least hung out a lot with really goth-y people in his teenage years. Daniel V is so.. um.. a little knowledge (or a little praise) is a dangerous thing, now he's learned how to diplomatically tell Tim Gunn "I appreciate what you say" when he clearly doesn't appreciate it and isn't listening at all.

Tim looks at Chloe's stuff and says, ah, Balenciaga.. but.. but.. it's so gold, and so pink! If you took Daniel V's fabrics and Chloe's silhouettes and put them together you might have something super cool.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 2 March 2006 04:23 (twenty years ago)

I've looked at Santino's site before.. I guess it suits him, what a crazy mishmash of stuff on there. Daniel V has a Myspace or something, right? Chloe would have a nice Typepad blog.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 2 March 2006 04:31 (twenty years ago)

phew! that open bold tag was driving me up the wall.

trouble is I still am not so crazy abt Santino's dresses! but I don't like peach, or that silhouette. I couldn't wear any of that. The stuff he wears himself, that, I could.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 2 March 2006 04:36 (twenty years ago)

I don't think he was ever a goth. Then again, I don't come from goth-land (flyover-land, I'm convinced) and he does.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 2 March 2006 04:45 (twenty years ago)

ah, santino has a myspace too!

http://myspace.com/santinosantino

tehresa (tehresa), Thursday, 2 March 2006 04:47 (twenty years ago)

See, exactly, that's my point. If you are weird and art-y in flyover land and people give you a lot of shit for it the odds are good you're at least somewhat goth. Or noize. I guess I'm not talking about makeup and black and PVC so much as the peculiar combination of aggro + insecurity as survival mechanism in flyover land.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 2 March 2006 05:00 (twenty years ago)

the other thing is that there have always been 'goths' but I don't think it ever really became a phenomenon until the last few years when the kids Feiler-Faster-reified everyone into "Abercrombies," etc.

(and ultimately I think Santino is too creative to limit himself that way)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 2 March 2006 05:03 (twenty years ago)

they just had the finalists on the view, but there was really no interview - they just walked out with one of their challenge-winning designs. i would have loved to have the three of them and tim chilling on a view couch chatting with the gals.

tehresa (tehresa), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad Chloe won. She deserved it.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 9 March 2006 04:09 (twenty years ago)

this was like the comedown episode. not enough workroom normalcy and Tim Gunn felt vestigial. nice for chloe, who was my first pick to win, and whose stuff looked a lot better on tv than the web, but santino was still my favorite (maybe i'm getting pulled in by his show), and i still harbor some belief that they turned him down in part because he was never going to be the banana republic dude.

something very strange happened in this show - i finally fell for nina garcia.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 9 March 2006 06:13 (twenty years ago)

Daniel's collection- Asian? Military? WTF? What do those aesthetics have to do with his own, why should they be combined, how could they possibly be fresh? Those influences ended up being barely discernable in the actual collection anyway. Nearly everything seemed wearable, but overall... just blandness.

Santino's, with a few very notable exceptions, managed to be both bland and unwearable. What was he aiming at? He seemed to have lost all of his confidence in his style.

The Brainwasher OTM about Chloe. It all looked rather romantic and lush, especially when compared to the other collections. It was obvious it was hers, too, from all the judges' comments and the look on Daniel's face. She's been my choice since the blue & black dress of the "shirt off your back" challenge.

Not very suspenseful, but satisfying.

Father Brian Eno (Father Brian Eno), Thursday, 9 March 2006 07:48 (twenty years ago)

Nina Garcia needs to do something with her hair, but it was nice of her to throw a bone to Santino.

Father Brian Eno (Father Brian Eno), Thursday, 9 March 2006 07:50 (twenty years ago)

Chloe aside, I really don't understand how the judges picked Daniel over Santino for second place... or at least it was my impression that they liked Daniel's stuff the second best. I didn't like Daniel's stuff at all.

I preferred Santino to Chloe but I can live with her winning. But is it just me or did there seem to be very little excitement when she won? It was like "oh, okay". Last year it was a party when Jay won.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 March 2006 08:41 (twenty years ago)

Okay you poeple are fucking insane. GIVE ME ONE GOOD REASON WHY CHLOE WON. I thought her collection was terrible. Heavy curtain-esque material, SHRUGS? I was utterly BAFFLED when they chose her. I thought Daniel's was a BIT boring but it was soooo banana republic and I thought he was the obvious choice for a winner

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:18 (twenty years ago)

I'll give you one good reason: Chloe's clothes were the only ones that fit the models. Here's another: her collection was the only one that had a unifying philosophy behind it. Daniel is a good short story writer and Santino might be a poet, but Chloe was the only one who wrote a novel. (Oh that was pretentious, sorry.)

I don't think that the judges were necessarily looking for "Oh we need someone who can design for Banana Republic," I think they were looking for "Who presented the best collection."

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)

I lost a little love for Daniel when he acted all pouty that Tim Gunn didn't pee himself in adoration over his collection. Daniel got too used to praise, as if to think that anything he made was good because he made it. His clothes were boring. I would have liked Santino's collection best if it fit better. Heidi Klum's "boobs" remark was OTM. I was surprised by Chloe's monochromatic pieces. They looked like upholstery.

I thought the personalities this season were more entertaining than last season, but I think last season's clothing was more interesting.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:40 (twenty years ago)

okay what exactly was the philosophy besides "ugly evening wear"?!?!

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Thursday, 9 March 2006 16:22 (twenty years ago)

poofy sleeves! (ugggggh)

also, there was one piece of daniel's that really looked like a cross between something at a ren faire and something a dominatrix would wear. or that was my first impression.

Juulia (julesbdules), Thursday, 9 March 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Chloe's dresses shared certain traits (shiny material, seaming themes, the shrug separates) and a unified color scheme. Daniel's "theme" was bullshit (Japanese + military + not following through = why?) and Santino's was "See, I can be careful and safe and boring too!"

But if you found her stuff ugly, then you won't care about that argument. I just think Daniel choked and Santino doesn't really care about women, is all.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 9 March 2006 16:39 (twenty years ago)

The judges' discussion had as much to do with persona as the work. Santino is extremely bright and passionate (not a detail or organization man), Daniel is very tasteful and up-and-coming (too safe and green), but Chloe was the most skilled and business-oriented. Which they knew all along. So given comparable collections, the result was a foregone conclusion, perhaps from the very beginning. Though she (the writers?) probably helped put her over the top with the thing about selling to 15-year-olds and 30-year-olds simultaneously.

I guess I see the fit point abt Santino's collection in retrospect. And he didn't defend against it, so I guess it sticks. But maybe he knew he had as little chance of winning, storyline-wise, as the judges did. And was fit really the point of his collection? I thought his whole show - the piercing eye-makeup, the flowing locks, the stunning models, the big walks, the subtly-stomping track - effectively sold this image that was simultaneously beautiful/glamorous (reflected in the fabulous gowns), a little punk (the raffish, perhaps kara-style, sweater stuff), and retaining a bit of soft femininity (the baby-dollish dresses). Women, yes, but super ones. Body shape is important to Chloe (ahem), but attitude is more important to Santino. Chloe wants to serve/sell to women. Santino wants to idealize/adore them.

So yes, Santino was very much about the show, but I fail to understand the idea that Chloe presented a more cohesive collection than he did. The theme was 'her fantasy'? It definitely reflected her personality/style - sort of crafty-sexy-cutesy - and I'll admit to not liking that style as much. But how does that have more depth than Santino? Is it a novel because it was quasi-Victorian? Yes, she elevated her particular approach (I hesitate to use the word shtick, though I think the judges used 'one-note'), but to a level that Santino had been on far more consistently than she had. And even at her most beautiful and intelligent, it was still pattern-oriented stuff. Hadn't Santino demonstrated greater range?

I thought it was clear that Tim knew Daniel was resting on his laurels and was trying to kick him out of his comfort zone. Which he appeared to have taken to heart in his last piece. Or was that more Nick's influence? On the whole he looked amateurish compared to the others.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 9 March 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Chloe never tried to do a "theme" with a title, she said that up front. But I think Santino didn't follow through on his, and Daniel changed his completely (maybe because he found out that he and Santino were both doing "40s Hollywood glamour"?) and then put together two mini-themes that shouldn't have gone together at all.

Listen, I hear what you are saying about the Santino / Chloe split, and there might be something to it. Also, yeah, Daniel won a lot of the challenges, and was generally flashier than Chloe, at least until he hit the wall 3/4 of the way through the year. But the challenges don't mean anything for the finale, in the same way that the team with the best regular season record doesn't just automatically win the playoffs.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 9 March 2006 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Tim appears to agree with me...

Santino's collection is, in a word, magnificent. I could easily see it at Bergdorf Goodman or Saks Fifth Avenue. Was it the winning collection? Gasp, I hoped not. Huh? Why? Because, were Santino Rice to be declared the winner of Project Runway, then the season three auditions would be subtitled, "Project Freak Show." Step right up ladies and gentlemen. In this tent we have Jay McCarroll and over here we have Santino Rice. I love and respect Santino, but please don't let him win!

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 9 March 2006 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh god, if this is really teh reason the judges voted that way then screw that, that's not fair.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 9 March 2006 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Yes, because fashion designers are known for being not-at-all eccentric. Can't encourage that.

Joe Polniaczek (kenan), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Yes, because this isn't a television show and profit-making enterprise.

I don't think it really matters whether Santino 'won'. I think the show already made his star.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

No, it's not fair, but their interest is really in protecting their professional identity & reputation - I wonder how much of a to-do there was behind the scenes when Jay didn't take the prize after Season 1, opting to break out on his own, and seemingly didn't have a lot of success at it. I'm sure Banana Republic was NOT happy about that.

I'm sure there was a lot of concern that Santino would've fought them over the prize and the strings attached - whereas a Chloe or a Kara Saun would be more willing to compromise and play the game, figuring (probably correctly) that it'll be to their benefit to do so.

Daniel.. didn't really think about his collection, did he? Japanese/military? this could cover so many things as to be nearly meaningless. Of course I didn't have the sense Santino or Chloe thought too much either..

I liked Chloe's babydoll dress with the pockets, maybe Diana's influence made it fun & interesting? Those printed fabrics Chloe used wers some of the most godawful prints I've ever seen in my life.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Chloe's collection was not to my taste, but I see how it could sway some people. Perhaps it could be seen as sort of like that Korean woman (I'm forgetting her name) who does similar stuff. The end of the season seemed really anticlimactic--I think because they finished all of the challenges and then spent a few weeks doing recaps and talk-abouts. I didn't realize that Jay didn't take the BR prize.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

if I wanted to be mean, I'd say Chloe's theme was J. Peterman-meets-ABC Carpet & Home

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

yeah, they should have saved their meta for after 'the show'

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:24 (twenty years ago)

when did Vosavic turn into such a chickenshit? it's like he and Santino traded placez. Top Chef was way more entertaining.

Milhouse is not a meme. But 'Milhouse is not a meme' IS a meme. (Adrian Langston, Thursday, 9 March 2006 19:00 (twenty years ago)

agreed to the notion that season 1's clothes owned season 2.

chloe consistently did it at least technically right. did santino ever live up to the hype? daniel did a few really good bits, but...
