With the odd exception, he has been less funny lately, while the artwork has improved. Still, he always raises a smile so good luck to him.

This one was great.

Paul Kelly (kelly), Friday, 30 September 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

I interviewed him last year, he was the greatest mutha alive to talk to. He is also doing the artwork for SLUM rekkids first compilation.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 30 September 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

:-D LeCoq, you wonderful man, that is an interview I would be proud of until the day I died. Well done.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 September 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

That guy is cool. I wrote to him after the first time I saw PBF, on ilx. I wrote him because I loved the comic, and he came from my city, and worked for my friend I also worked for, who has an animation studio there. He was charming and remembered the friend too. I might run into him in the future, I hope.

ten months pass...
I've read his online collection and I have to say he's giving Larson a run for his money as my favourite comic-strip author. Just awesome. My favourite is probably 'The Shortcut Express' which might be the single bleakest thing, erm, ever. I'd love to meet the guy.

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Saturday, 5 August 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, even when he misses, I love the art. When he hits, he's among my favorites ever.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 5 August 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

One of my student workers was looking through PBF the other day and I complimented him on his good taste -- the other student worker asked about it and knowing she had the right sense of humor (ie, gone, dark and evil) we both referred her to the site. She was appropriately horrified/entertained.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 August 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

It reminds me of a British animated cartoon called Monkey Dust, in its own turn the bleakest TV I have ever seen and my favourite television programme. The PBF mines a similar seam of knowing, despairing, fiendishly intelligent maleovolence.

*remembers The Man With No Penis, smirks, buries head in hands*

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Saturday, 5 August 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

burying your head in your hands is the real-life alternative to the comic strip shooting yourself in the head

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 5 August 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

(you have no penis)

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 5 August 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

The burying head in hands was in sympathy to anyone in a similar plight to TMWNP, that of being tormented by a general pleasure he/she cannot attain.

*realises how dorky the above sentence is, smirks, buries head in hands*

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Saturday, 5 August 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

okay, I thought it was simply because you, too, have no penis

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 5 August 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

Jimmy Mod: THE HANDLESS ORGANIST (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 10 August 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

The Shortcut Express is IMO the portrait of a once-great entertainer (or a lonely man who wishes he was) deserted by his audience and left alone with his cuddly toys, mustering one last act of showmanship before ending his exquisite misery in the most profoundly miserable manner. It's brilliant.

The best ones apart from that are No Survivors, Barb And Rudy, Today I Am Going To Fly, It's My Birthday, Freaking Vortex and Eden. Holy crap they're good.

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Thursday, 10 August 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

It's so great, and the new archive is nice. I think my favorite is still 'Space Laughs', the very first one I read (years ago when a friend scanned some in for his site).

Out of the recent ones, Guntron Alliance Force is kinda brilliant.

1) is definitely The Shortcut Express, that one hits something no other cartoon has ever reached

Also in there are Barb And Rudy, Pyro Billy, The Man With No Penis, Suck Note, Today I Am Going To Fly, Suicide Train, It's My Birthday and of course No Survivors (my 2nd favourite). The other two will take more deliberation.

Did anyone else preorder the book?

I did. Yes, the cover artwork is awful, although I'm sure if you eat a dozen pixie sticks it may make more sense. But, it's only 10 dollars, it's 96 pages, and if each page looks like this:

http://www.pbfcomics.com/images/Book-Open.jpg

that means around 180 little strips.

It's hilarious and sometimes crushingly depressing. I always wondered what he was like in real life. I read some interviews with him from way back and he seems to be a good guy but he kind of battles with his own issues in real life which sometimes manifests itself in the strip. The "No Survivors" one apparently was written after a bad breakup. Ouch.

Now that I look back, he can get confusing at times, like the Edward Gorey and R. Crumb tributes.

jmm, Friday, 19 December 2014 05:17 (eleven years ago)

I think there's more to this joke, like maybe Santa replaced a regular elf with his child and the elf is in the bag, hence the conspiratorial wink.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 19 December 2014 08:06 (eleven years ago)

Or that Santa is running a Fritzl operation up there in the secluded North Pole.

Øystein, Friday, 19 December 2014 09:45 (eleven years ago)

I think there's more to it too, first thought was it's like in the cartoons where say huey due and luey stand on each other's shoulders and wear a big coat to look like a bigger duck. Hence the redness around the elf's jawline from where he wears a false beard. But I've got nothing from there.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Friday, 19 December 2014 12:57 (eleven years ago)

I'm looking at this from the reindeer's perspective:

1st panel: Reindeer sees a 'familiar' face amidst the three children, the child winks at him
2nd panel: Thinking baout things. He ponders if what he thinks is true, that Santa is the father of that elf
3rd panel: Santa gives the same sort of wink, but..

Argh fuck, I've got nothing. Reindeer in 3rd panel is all O_O. No idea on the rest. Yes, Santa maybe knocked up those women, but eh.. so?

a pleasant little psychedelic detour in the elevator (Amory Blaine), Friday, 19 December 2014 13:39 (eleven years ago)

I think maybe part of the funny is that the reindeer doesn't give a fuck/his blank expression?

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Friday, 19 December 2014 13:46 (eleven years ago)

In Finnish folklore at least, Santa has a wife. Presumably the lady elves have husbands too; the other elf kids don't look like Santa, so they must've been sired by male elves. The joke is to contrast the image of Santa as a kid-friendly do-gooder with the idea that he is secretly (hence the wink) an adulterer. This contrast is emphasized by making the one who discovers the truth be one of Santa's reindeer, i.e. someone who's generally (and in this comic strip too) depicted as an innocent animal.

Really, guys, this isn't rocket science!

Tuomas, Friday, 19 December 2014 13:46 (eleven years ago)

Point is, I refuse to believe it isn't rocket science.

a pleasant little psychedelic detour in the elevator (Amory Blaine), Friday, 19 December 2014 13:56 (eleven years ago)

But anyway, speaking of the latest PBF strips, I thought this one was really good, and most reminiscent of the strip's "classic" era:

http://www.pbfcomics.com/archive_b/PBF262-Dreamcatcher.png

the most obvious signifier with the whistle vs clarinet(?) is class or status for sure, i.e. a cheaper maybe more low brow less refined version of the same kind of thing. however the comic is titled Harmony so race would maybe fit the pun better, but the whistle doesn't seem as strong a choice for that.

"In Finnish folklore at least, Santa has a wife."

I was going to ask why Santa having a wife would be a particularly Finnish thing, but it just struck me that American Santa folklore is pretty much Coca Cola ads and a murdering Tim Allen.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 19 December 2014 18:24 (eleven years ago)

I think Tuomas was just speaking from his own culture and not presuming to be an authority on American traditions.

this was the first PBF i ever saw, around '02: http://www.pbfcomics.com/22/

my neighbor showed me a site where he and his friends would post battle rap songs every week, and refreshing the page would show a different PBF comic at the bottom (there were only like five though, and uncredited so i had no idea what it was called).

the thing that makes the santa strip unclear is the elf childs face doesnt resemble santas enough imho

lag∞n, Friday, 19 December 2014 23:49 (eleven years ago)

the preggo elf moms are an admission of this and although theyre intended to highlight the joke they further obscure it through confusing the composition of the final panel

I think that fits well enough with PBF world logic.

Do you feel guilty about your wight western priva (ledge), Thursday, 8 October 2015 12:21 (ten years ago)

I suspect the back row kid was merely being smart. I've never come across a school pop quiz where the answer should be provided with a picture, so most likely he intended the front row kid to write the answer in words based on what sees in the pic. But if the back row kid had actually written the correct answer to question 5 in words, and the teacher had noticed him passing the note and confiscated it, the front row kid would've been accused of cheating, and the back row kid would've be considered his accomplice. However, if the teacher confiscates the penis illustration, all she could blame them for is circulating a dirty picture, which surely is a lesser misdemeanor in the school books than cheating. The front row kid can only blame himself for not realizing the back row kid's clever stratagem.

do you find this unlikely? in the US seems a person would eat about 8 cows on average during a lifetime https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2012/06/27/155527365/visualizing-a-nation-of-meat-eaters

it looks like an xkcd strip. all that's missing is a hilarious alt text box saying something like, "who needs hugs and encouraging words when you can rest in the assurance that your tired, despondent body will always accelerate at 9.81 m/s² before it strikes the boardroom floor?"

it's on his main website, so it's an official strip, but it's a new one. not sure if the store is his. yeah that strip is very xkcd, but his shtick is doing different styles, so I'll allow him one comic like this

also, the son is apparently already familiar with what it looks like when trees have human sex, so it's not so much like the twist is dad saying "actually they're fucking!" as it is the dad correcting him on the kind of fucking they're doing

sprout god (lag∞n), Wednesday, 18 July 2018 16:57 (seven years ago)

does his work regularly appear in playboy? if so, i'd imagine he's at least happy to get a decent paycheck.

it's too bad, in a world that wasn't dumb his first 100 panels or so could just be syndicated in black in white in the cartoon section of hundreds of newspapers and they'd be by far the funniest thing in there every single day. but you're not allowed to have a syndicated cartoon unless you're completely bland and humorless or struck some sort of deal with satan back in the early 1980s.

Her psychiatrist has fixed her problems, but her husband is inevitably going to reverse all the progress they made (she is a toilet clogged with tampons, her husband is a box of tampons) - gentleworms is just a fairly silly take on the separation of soul and body, don't think there is that much to say about it.
