The Saragossa Manuscript C/D?

Fine upstanding mid-60s surrealist film from Poland or psychotropic twaddle that's only famous because it was Jerry Garcia's favorite film? I haven't seen it and figure that I'd throw it open to the ILX massive before deciding to burn the bandwidth up in downloading it.

it's three hours long, mind. Story inside a story inside a story inside a story inside a story inside a story inside a story inside a story.

Yeah, I've almost seen it twice. But god, what amazing poster art! I love the old Polish popular-arts style!

Classic, but so long that it is easier to commit to watching it in a theater than at home with a DVD.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

don't smoke pot or you will lose the plot.
the casting director apparently favored big tits.

Penderecki score! Set in Spain!

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a film of the proto-magic realist book "The Manuscript Found in Saragossa"? I've got to see this, I didn't even know it existed!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't seen the film but the book it's based on is flat out great. Well worth the reading.

This was Jerry Garcia's favorite supper, in case you want to check that out too. I read his biography Dark Star and it said he usually dined at a San Rafael AM-PM.

I saw the movie in a hotel room in Dallas.. I thought it was pretty entertaining.

It's good fun. Can't say it's the greatest, but clearly it was a big force in 60's cinema that went AWOL after awhile, so good to have it back and accessible. I've wanted to read the novel for a long time; just never had the chance. Apparently he was working on a sequel when he died (Potocki, I mean).

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 16 March 2005 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

When he died? Isn't the story that he melted down a teapot and then used it as ammo to put a silver bullet through his brain?

xpost to the Argunaut:
Those were actually some of the most famous actresses in Poland, who were perhaps helped by their period costumes. Two of them also have the main roles in Everything For Sale, the film about the death of Zbigniew Cybulski, the Polish James Dean, who is the star of The Saragossa Manuscript. But you are perhaps not altogether incorrect in your assessment: when in Warsaw.,,

gotta see this sometime.

I like how everyone on ILX knows everything about everything. I own this DVD, but it was not what I'd hoped. One day, it might be nice to read the book.

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the book itself (written by a crazy exiled polish nobleman named jan potocki) ain't half-bad, either. kinda like tristram shandy and the decameron rolled into one.

i love 18th century literature!

three years pass...

I've been looking for a copy of "Saragossa Manuscript" director Wojciech Has' "The Hourglass Sanitorium" for close on a decade, and finally chanced on a copy in HMV this afternoon. I'm saving it for the holidays. Released in the UK by Mr. Bongo, who seem to specialise in Brazilian music but have recently diversified into world cinema. (Wonder if they'll ever get round to his version of "Confessions of a Justified Sinner"?)

The Hourglass Sanatorium is my favourite of his. Also saw the Noose, which was very good but quite different from THS and TSM - less surreal, more of a drama, iirc. I thought I'd caught another one at a film fest but none of the others are ringing strong bells, so maybe just those three.

emil.y, Thursday, 15 October 2015 21:02 (ten years ago)

thanks! hoping to stay awake for Sanatorium tomw night.

I don't have it to hand, but in the latest Sight and Sound (del Toro cover) there's a review of new Hourglass/Saragossa Blu-Rays that also mentions other Has films of interest, fwiw

eight years pass...

*bump* since I saw this again last night, which makes three times- as many as Buñuel! Annette Insdorf did the introduction, which was interesting and entertaining, although almost all of it can be found in the relevant chapter in her book on Has, which also cites this article
https://www.sensesofcinema.com/2012/cteq/the-saragossa-manuscript/

Hoping I can go back to see a few more in the complete retrospective.

Get to hear a lot of The Dead at this festival because of the Jerry Garcia fandom

Keep thinking of the guy who spoke on the final night talking about some static between Has and Cybulski.

Thrapple from the Apple (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 19 July 2024 00:58 (one year ago)

There was a point were Has thought Cybulski wasn’t coming back so he got some nonentity named Andre Clair to play the part for a while
