Fine upstanding mid-60s surrealist film from Poland or psychotropic twaddle that's only famous because it was Jerry Garcia's favorite film? I haven't seen it and figure that I'd throw it open to the ILX massive before deciding to burn the bandwidth up in downloading it.

This was Jerry Garcia's favorite supper, in case you want to check that out too. I read his biography Dark Star and it said he usually dined at a San Rafael AM-PM.

I saw the movie in a hotel room in Dallas.. I thought it was pretty entertaining.

It's good fun. Can't say it's the greatest, but clearly it was a big force in 60's cinema that went AWOL after awhile, so good to have it back and accessible. I've wanted to read the novel for a long time; just never had the chance. Apparently he was working on a sequel when he died (Potocki, I mean).

Those were actually some of the most famous actresses in Poland, who were perhaps helped by their period costumes. Two of them also have the main roles in Everything For Sale, the film about the death of Zbigniew Cybulski, the Polish James Dean, who is the star of The Saragossa Manuscript. I've been looking for a copy of "Saragossa Manuscript" director Wojciech Has' "The Hourglass Sanitorium" for close on a decade, and finally chanced on a copy in HMV this afternoon. I'm saving it for the holidays. Released in the UK by Mr. Bongo, who seem to specialise in Brazilian music but have recently diversified into world cinema. (Wonder if they'll ever get round to his version of "Confessions of a Justified Sinner"?)

The Hourglass Sanatorium is my favourite of his. Also saw the Noose, which was very good but quite different from THS and TSM - less surreal, more of a drama, iirc. I thought I'd caught another one at a film fest but none of the others are ringing strong bells, so maybe just those three.

*bump* since I saw this again last night, which makes three times- as many as Buñuel! Annette Insdorf did the introduction, which was interesting and entertaining, although almost all of it can be found in the relevant chapter in her book on Has, which also cites this article
