I have a Bit Torrent question, though. I'm using Azureus on a Mac and it's giving two problems: When I download the torrent (not the file itself), somehow the full-size of the file appears, before I've even begun downloading it. And if, for whatever reason, I have to force quit or reboot, the files will start from zero %, even though the total received might be nearly %100. Any hints as to what might be up? I've been using the straight ahead Bit Torrent client for months now and wanted something with a bit more control. Azureus seems to work, save for these annoying glitches.

* how do i configure things? i'm on mac os x, using internet connection sharing thru an ethernet cable in order to get my connection (the primary computer uses a shitty USB dsl modem to connect)
1) in Azureus do i set incoming TCP listen port to some random number, or use the default 6881?
2) in "enable tracker on http port" in the tracker server prefs, do i set to 6969, or some random number?
3) in my sharing preference pane, in the firewall section, do i make an exception for both these port numbers?
if i do these things right i ought to be "connectable," yet relatively safe, right?

this 'trackers' thing and how it workswhy i never get a green circle (only yellow) despite port forwarding thru my router configif there's a way to queue up torrents automatically?seeding after/if you've closed the client window
― Sven Bastard (blueski), Saturday, 12 March 2005 15:53 (nineteen years ago) link
The configuration stuff and everything, I'm no good at fixing -- I just kind of tinkered with my settings randomly until it worked, and as soon as I tried using a different client, it stopped working except at a snail's pace.
A lot of clients ought to let you queue up automatically -- BitComet is what I use despite some security concerns (but like I said, when I switched clients, it barely worked), and you can either run a crapload of torrents at once, or set a maximum number of downloads of three, let's say, and once it finishes one it'll move on to the next.
I don't think you can seed if you close the client, but I could be wrong about that.

The aforementioned Th3B0x is terrific. Lots of documentaries turn up on mvgr0up too.
To be fair though, USENET binary traffic has been exploding now with some of the larger torrent sites going offline. I pretty much grab everything from there now.

I think I pretty much only use torrents to compensate for my lack of cable television these days. 3ztv.it for American TV, th3b0x.bz for British TV, my$pl33n.cc for comedy/animation. t0rr3ntz.com is the best search engine at the moment.

Yeah, I've switched over to Torrentz. DO waffles and what still exist? I still to this day haven't found a suitable OiNK replacement, other than slsk which I don't love.
And demonoid's not gone, apparently! It's just on a looooong hiatus.

"since Comcast started sandvining I can't really torrent anymore, it kills the internet connection for the whole house if I run one."
Comcast doesn't sandvine anymore, but that isn't the problem you are having anyways. Your client has too many connections open and your router can't handle it. Try lowering the number to about 150-200 or so. You also need to set your upload limit to about 75-80 percent of your max upload. That way others in your house can use the internet.

rapidshare and its various cousins are def growing in popularity - but they just seem too shitty to ever get really big
― ice cr?m, Sunday, 6 December 2009 21:44 (fourteen years ago) link
being limited to downloading one thing at a time from rapidshare is the biggest drawback alongside the slow slow speed

Searching for filedumps is terrible. But if you find the right sites/forums (many of which are googleable) for these filedumps and scene releases, that + jdownloader are all you need - the program even autoupdates every week or so in a tug of war with the filesharing sites as it kills its captchas. Damned if I'm gonna pay for a rapidshare "premium account" or some such though. Might as well go the Usenet route then.

tehparadox dot com is a good community for the rapidshare style things. you have to join, which is very easy to do. lots of good applications, games, movies, even comics. Just be wary of posted files from dubious as you would torrents. they moderate it thoroughly too. It's the best site for mac warez that requires no invitation that i've found. just have to tolerate waiting a while because of the rapidshare/hotfile/megaupload services.

― let's bitch about our stupid, annoying co-ilxors (darraghmac), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 21:33 (eleven years ago) link
I would purely hypothetically conjecture that someone like myself might never have had any luck with "enter the last word on the 5th line of this dodgy website" passwords actually working even if they foolishly decided to go to the dodgy site in question.
They also may not have had any luck with the RAR password cracker they might possibly have tried on a few occasions, because the password is probably not actually a word but e.g. ~~~d0dgy-webs!tez.com~~~ and it'd need to try every combination of between 1 and 48 characters to find it, which would take... a very, very long time.
That hypothetical person would probably suggest looking for a different copy elsewhere tbh.

― Miami weisse (WmC), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 13:17 (four years ago) link
I'm sure the "best" sites require accounts and invitations, but I have no idea what the "best" sites are these days. I just know I have yet to be stumped looking for something on the broader internet, and I really have no fear that, like, a documentary about dub music or Bill Frisell or even, for example, some Hitchcock film will be a vector for a malicious virus or whatever. (That said, if there was an invite site that is full of stuff I'm missing out on ... ).

― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 March 2020 20:30 (four years ago) link
Coaltown doesn't seem to be available on any of the private trackers so yes, it's probably never been released.
In general though, if you're interested in anything vaguely obscure or underground you're not going to find it on public torrent sites. Those interested in Shinsuke Ogawa, for example, aren't going to get hold of his films anywhere except on KG or PTP.
― the grateful dead can dance (anagram), Thursday, 26 March 2020 20:34 (four years ago) link
I miss the W sites and was not cool enough/missed my chance to be on their successors, but tbh 95% of my listening these days is NTS radio and I should spend more on bandcamp (and then there's also spotify and 20 years of accumulated mp3s and 30 years of accumulated CDs), so what do I actually want to download GBs more music I'll never listen to for
― a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 26 March 2020 20:53 (four years ago) link
ogawa's a good example, there's so much cultural bias (anglophone in particular) implicit in what hits public torrent sites and what doesn't. i see the unavailability of certain works as a cultural barrier to be overcome, and the people on the private trackers behave more like it's a form of currency to be accumulated.
well, i'm not here to fix the world's problems, i don't even have time to watch narrative media these days, but i'll always find time to bitch and moan about things on the internet!
― Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 26 March 2020 21:03 (four years ago) link
But it's only the people who are seeding Ogawa's films on private trackers who are overcoming that cultural barrier by making them available to other members. It's nothing to with "currency to be accumulated". I've built a healthy ratio on private trackers but I don't have a seedbox and never have.
