I've only ever used suprnova.org, really.

I'd second Delerium Vault.

I have a Bit Torrent question, though. I'm using Azureus on a Mac and it's giving two problems: When I download the torrent (not the file itself), somehow the full-size of the file appears, before I've even begun downloading it. And if, for whatever reason, I have to force quit or reboot, the files will start from zero %, even though the total received might be nearly %100. Any hints as to what might be up? I've been using the straight ahead Bit Torrent client for months now and wanted something with a bit more control. Azureus seems to work, save for these annoying glitches.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Sunday, 7 November 2004 21:50 (nineteen years ago) link

seems delerium vault is not taking new registrations, any idea when it might start again?

p-t, Sunday, 7 November 2004 22:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Wow, Delirium looks really cool. I wish they were open for registrations. Jack Battery-Pack, would you mind asking in the forums for us when/if they're accepting more, or if we can get registrations?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I use Tomato Torrent on a mac, Guymauve.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Audiofarm is great for all kinds of music production programs. Sequencers, VSTs, sample discs, even electronic versions of Sound on Sound. They have mac stuff and PC stuff. Don't be put off by the German on the intro page. It's almost all English inside.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:26 (nineteen years ago) link

delirium looks like an exclusive club

of cocks.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha, I'm a meber of Delirium-Vault - lots of interesting stuff, even if it does come across as a bit elitist. Someone put the Merzbox up early on...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:31 (nineteen years ago) link

I hate those kinds of things. The guys at Mutant Liberation Front are the worst for that kind of shit. They like to pretend their private tracker doesn't exist and ban anyone that even mentions it. It's like, bitches I don't want to be a part of your geeky fucking "community" in order to get comics and share mine with you!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:33 (nineteen years ago) link

You guys that have memberships at Delirium, did you join any time recently? Any idea if memberships are closed for good, or is it temporary?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:35 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm also bemused by people who think that the authors of the things they are sharing should have no control over their distribution, but ban people who post their torrents on Suprnova - What right do you have to these things, if their creators have none?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:36 (nineteen years ago) link

in a world gone mad it's hard to think right

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 7 November 2004 23:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I got into Delerium at point where they'd open the floodgates, so it seems. I'm not happy about the attitude of many people in the community there. However, it's a good source for films, videos, etc., that are not so easy to find in Finland, or elsewhere for that matter. And I actually use some of these in my lectures (the Debord film, for example). So I'll take the crunchy with the smooth, in this case.

Honour among thieves, indeed.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Monday, 8 November 2004 06:23 (nineteen years ago) link

And Alba, sorry, I'll try Tomato torrent. This Azureus thing is a, ahem, bit maddening.

Delerium were taking registrations up until two days ago...

They probably hit their user limit and need to purge some dead users before opening the gates again (my guess).. Most trackers seem to do this from time to time..

ok folks:

* how do i configure things? i'm on mac os x, using internet connection sharing thru an ethernet cable in order to get my connection (the primary computer uses a shitty USB dsl modem to connect)

1) in Azureus do i set incoming TCP listen port to some random number, or use the default 6881?

2) in "enable tracker on http port" in the tracker server prefs, do i set to 6969, or some random number?

3) in my sharing preference pane, in the firewall section, do i make an exception for both these port numbers?

if i do these things right i ought to be "connectable," yet relatively safe, right?

Port forwarding is a headache.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 13 November 2004 22:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't even figure out how to *use* bittorrent!

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 13 November 2004 22:23 (nineteen years ago) link

It's, uh, pretty easy. You open the file, and the program starts downloading whatever you're trying to grab (if there is anyone "seeding" it).

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 13 November 2004 22:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe no one was seeding, because nothing happened.

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 13 November 2004 22:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, if it wasn't that, then it was something annoying that involves firewalls and port forwarding. That is a headache.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 13 November 2004 22:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Milo, the next best thing is that Crazy Mazey's place linked to at the top. It's mostly horror, but there's lots of other stuff too. I got a Bunuel movie and a Jodorowski movie there.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 14 November 2004 07:01 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think "port forwarding" is my problem, because even with all my ports open (on both my computer and the one I'm sharing my connection with), I get the same behavior.

Unless somehow my ISP has a firewall set up? I don't think that's possible.

Thanks anyway folks.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Sunday, 14 November 2004 11:56 (nineteen years ago) link

gah, fucking azureus worked great until it did a self update, now, it no longer gives an option of where to save torrents, it just dumps them into it's own folder. What kind of stupid idea was that?

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Saturday, 12 March 2005 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Nine times out of ten, if you can't get it to work, it seems to be a firewall/ports problem, if that helps any. (With me on my old computer, it was also a processor/RAM problem, but upgrading to a modern computer solved that.)

I'd also love to find a sports site, pref baseball -- last year I couldn't even find any World Series games, which I thought would be, you know, everywhere.

suprnova used to occasionally have football games, Steve, but I don't know whose tracker they were on -- it may still be out there.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 12 March 2005 15:29 (nineteen years ago) link

stuff i still don't fully understand:

this 'trackers' thing and how it works
why i never get a green circle (only yellow) despite port forwarding thru my router config
if there's a way to queue up torrents automatically?
seeding after/if you've closed the client window

Sven Bastard (blueski), Saturday, 12 March 2005 15:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Trackers are the things that moderate the transfers -- the torrent is registered on such-and-such a tracker, various people run the torrent on their machines, and chat up the tracker to see who else is out there with what they need.

The configuration stuff and everything, I'm no good at fixing -- I just kind of tinkered with my settings randomly until it worked, and as soon as I tried using a different client, it stopped working except at a snail's pace.

A lot of clients ought to let you queue up automatically -- BitComet is what I use despite some security concerns (but like I said, when I switched clients, it barely worked), and you can either run a crapload of torrents at once, or set a maximum number of downloads of three, let's say, and once it finishes one it'll move on to the next.

I don't think you can seed if you close the client, but I could be wrong about that.

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 12 March 2005 16:06 (nineteen years ago) link

couldn't there be a slsk-style app that lists available torrents either hosted online and on users machines, and it's able to search for multiple sources of the torrent as you download it, as BT does - but i find the BT clients themselves not very well designed. will try and suss Azureus more tho i think.

Bitcomet is very good and takes up relatively little memory.

it seems to take up less resources. also it has support for distributed trackers which is where bittorent is probably going to go soon (making it more p2p and less website-hosted tracker dependent). but installing the update made it crash immediately.

torrents are quicker?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 14 July 2005 00:36 (eighteen years ago) link

not always.

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 14 July 2005 00:38 (eighteen years ago) link

torrents are generally quicker for me, also you don't get someone buggering off halfway through a download & leaving you hanging ie i can leave my computer to do its thing & go do something else. having said that slsk kills all just for the sheer scope - one of my favourite things is just putting in random words & seeing what songs come out, discovered loads of interesting things that way.

zappi (joni), Thursday, 14 July 2005 00:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 01:55 (eighteen years ago) link

also you don't get someone buggering off halfway through a download & leaving you hanging

depends how many people are seeding (if any). sometimes there'll just be one seeder and he'll go offline for days. it also depends on both of your connection/transfer speeds.

president carter loves repetition (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 14 July 2005 02:00 (eighteen years ago) link

it's the same with slsk: sometimes your download is 0.5 kbps and sometimes it's 60.

i'm a bit concerned that my downloads and (to a lesser extent) uploads seem a lot slower than they used to. i've recently installed SP2 - could this be the problem? something to do with firewalls?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 2 September 2005 07:19 (eighteen years ago) link

SP2 limits the amount of outgoing connections you can make to 10, or something like that. I found it didn't significantly affect my d/l speeds, but if your problems started after you installed sp2, that's probably it. You can pretty easily google up some utilities that'll hack your system back into allowing more connections, but I've heard they might fuck with your stability and shit.

"since Comcast started sandvining I can't really torrent anymore, it kills the internet connection for the whole house if I run one."

Comcast doesn't sandvine anymore, but that isn't the problem you are having anyways. Your client has too many connections open and your router can't handle it. Try lowering the number to about 150-200 or so. You also need to set your upload limit to about 75-80 percent of your max upload. That way others in your house can use the internet.

Searching for filedumps is terrible. But if you find the right sites/forums (many of which are googleable) for these filedumps and scene releases, that + jdownloader are all you need - the program even autoupdates every week or so in a tug of war with the filesharing sites as it kills its captchas. Damned if I'm gonna pay for a rapidshare "premium account" or some such though. Might as well go the Usenet route then.

tehparadox dot com is a good community for the rapidshare style things. you have to join, which is very easy to do. lots of good applications, games, movies, even comics. Just be wary of posted files from dubious as you would torrents. they moderate it thoroughly too. It's the best site for mac warez that requires no invitation that i've found. just have to tolerate waiting a while because of the rapidshare/hotfile/megaupload services.

I would purely hypothetically conjecture that someone like myself might never have had any luck with "enter the last word on the 5th line of this dodgy website" passwords actually working even if they foolishly decided to go to the dodgy site in question.

They also may not have had any luck with the RAR password cracker they might possibly have tried on a few occasions, because the password is probably not actually a word but e.g. ~~~d0dgy-webs!tez.com~~~ and it'd need to try every combination of between 1 and 48 characters to find it, which would take... a very, very long time.

That hypothetical person would probably suggest looking for a different copy elsewhere tbh.

Like it's just so huge no human could ever comprehend owning a humungous 50 inch TV!!! Gosh, I didn't even know they made TVs that big. "Hey everybody, look at me! I got a 50-inch LCD. Jealous much?" So ridiculous.

such an iconic and well curated site of the early torrent period and often had unique and rare content. None the wiser to what happened to Deimos, but it certainly sounds like a sudden and unexpected event that killed him - RIP.

Do the best sites require accounts? Do I need an invitation? Can I get a witness?

Miami weisse (WmC), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 13:17 (four years ago) link

I'm sure the "best" sites require accounts and invitations, but I have no idea what the "best" sites are these days. I just know I have yet to be stumped looking for something on the broader internet, and I really have no fear that, like, a documentary about dub music or Bill Frisell or even, for example, some Hitchcock film will be a vector for a malicious virus or whatever. (That said, if there was an invite site that is full of stuff I'm missing out on ... ).

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 24 March 2020 13:22 (four years ago) link

Zooqle is worth checking out, although my pc is probably bitmining for Putin since I've downloaded about a hundred movies from there. I can send you an invite for a members site if you want WMC.

calzino, Tuesday, 24 March 2020 13:31 (four years ago) link

Fwiw it's not a particularly good members site, but it is a relatively safe one!

calzino, Tuesday, 24 March 2020 13:33 (four years ago) link

Thanks -- I may hold off for the moment. I found what had been eluding me this morning.

im still using l1metorrent with fair reliability

ole uncle tiktok (darraghmac), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 14:37 (four years ago) link

That's what I've been using too, but kept getting frustrated earlier by a bad gateway error.

Miami weisse (WmC), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 14:54 (four years ago) link

the ytmnd or yify variations were good for a while but similarly frustrating after a short time each

i have one i used last week of that ilk that seemed ok, will post later when home

ole uncle tiktok (darraghmac), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 14:57 (four years ago) link

wait, i thought ytmnd was for sean connery memes, not torrents

i'll occassionally pop in through a tpb proxy, there are a billion of them about

btn for general TV
red for music
ptp for general films
kg for arthouse films

all are elite private trackers, next to impossible to get invites for

the grateful dead can dance (anagram), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 19:49 (four years ago) link

i'm over it, ok? i'm fucking over it. the bbs scene when i was 13 was fucking scene rats trading games that weren't any good and that nobody had time to play anyhow, and all these private prestige trackers, same shit different day. fuck digital capital, give me digital potlaches. what's the point of digging up some incredibly rare digital transfer if it's only available to an "elite" cadre of seedboxers whose primary concern in life is their ratio? the ones who hoard what they have are worse than the ones who steal everything that aren't nailed down and give nothing in return. upload it to youtube, or fuck, even just fucking sell it, ok?

Kate (rushomancy), Wednesday, 25 March 2020 01:19 (four years ago) link

i ain't promising i'll buy it mind you but if i don't, that's my own damn problem.

Kate (rushomancy), Wednesday, 25 March 2020 01:20 (four years ago) link

Like I said, I've had no trouble finding high-quality rips in the open web/torrents of literally anything I've ever wanted to see.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 01:31 (four years ago) link

well, if you don't want to see yahoo serious' first film, a documentary about the effects of the coal mining industry on australia, that's your problem

if on the other hand you have found a high-quality rip of "coal town" out in the open i would love a link

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 26 March 2020 20:13 (four years ago) link

Just doing some deep googling, and ... is there a chance that it has never even been released on home video in any format? I can barely even find mention of its existence, period.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 March 2020 20:28 (four years ago) link

(btw, I totally saw Young Einstein in the theaters.)

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 March 2020 20:30 (four years ago) link

Coaltown doesn't seem to be available on any of the private trackers so yes, it's probably never been released.

In general though, if you're interested in anything vaguely obscure or underground you're not going to find it on public torrent sites. Those interested in Shinsuke Ogawa, for example, aren't going to get hold of his films anywhere except on KG or PTP.

the grateful dead can dance (anagram), Thursday, 26 March 2020 20:34 (four years ago) link

I miss the W sites and was not cool enough/missed my chance to be on their successors, but tbh 95% of my listening these days is NTS radio and I should spend more on bandcamp (and then there's also spotify and 20 years of accumulated mp3s and 30 years of accumulated CDs), so what do I actually want to download GBs more music I'll never listen to for

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 26 March 2020 20:53 (four years ago) link

ogawa's a good example, there's so much cultural bias (anglophone in particular) implicit in what hits public torrent sites and what doesn't. i see the unavailability of certain works as a cultural barrier to be overcome, and the people on the private trackers behave more like it's a form of currency to be accumulated.

well, i'm not here to fix the world's problems, i don't even have time to watch narrative media these days, but i'll always find time to bitch and moan about things on the internet!

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 26 March 2020 21:03 (four years ago) link

But it's only the people who are seeding Ogawa's films on private trackers who are overcoming that cultural barrier by making them available to other members. It's nothing to with "currency to be accumulated". I've built a healthy ratio on private trackers but I don't have a seedbox and never have.
