The day before US Thanksgiving doldrums

Okay, so who here in the States is currently at work where nobody else is because they're all either fighting their way through the airport terminals or just not coming in at all? Half the library staff here seems to have conveniently disappeared.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And me, I'm not going home for Thanksgiving; it's always too much hassle. I've been invited to a friend's place, hurrah.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well we're all here but we're having a big lunch in the kitchen. I brought store-bought potato salad, am I sad or what?

I actually have work to do and am working, in between posting.

We're not going to any family things b/c it's just too much hassle. Thanksgiving is such a half-holiday. We are going to a friend's tomorrow were there will probably be more trees consumed than poultry. ahem.

Other than that a couple of shows are on order, I'm going to try and drag Hank to see Harry Potter and I'm going to clean out the fridge. yay four day weekends! (which means I won't being seeing you bunch till monday. pbb)

Samantha, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just got here, and figured it to be a dull day, however I already have a couple annoying requests...

Sean, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's the big football game tomorrow then?

chris, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is bullshit - our library is quiet, too. I don't know why they just don't close down on Wednesday as well, since most classes are cancelled today. And after all, we need a holiday to prepare for our holiday tomorrow - honestly, how can I work, obsessing as I am about all of the Italian food I'm going to feast on tomorrow? (None of that cranberry bullshit for me...)

Kerry, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn, Kerry, that sounds like a great Thanksgiving! :-) Had I not gotten the invite, I would have floated over to Au Lac, veg Vietnamese cuisine of the gods, and feasted.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am at work and i am DYING. campus is empty, yet here we are open. i should be sleeping. (i practically am.) we did get free pizza today though, but the multiple slices i ate are now contributing to my somnabulence.

jess, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

life can be a rytier. But lets getta attitude ! dude! lets not be so fan ceee. lats thanky wanky!

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm contributing to the general sense of emptiness by ditching class.

turner, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yippee!! The new director (the one who replaced scleroderma woman) came by and said we can all go home at 2 PM! What a rebel!

Kerry, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

argh, I'm stuffed! The work pot luck lunch was a bountiful success. I helped myself to enchiladas, spaghetti and meatballs, fajitas, taco salad, queso, deviled eggs, guacamole, refried beans and even a little of my own pathetic potato salad so it would like someone liked it. For desert I had some cranberry jelly stuff, a tiny slice of apple pie and I'm saving a chocolate and peanut butter chip brownie for an afternoon snack. yum!

okay, nap time.

Samantha, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And you're not sharing this fine bounty with us, Samantha. *cries*

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Crap, I'm probably going to have a boring, cold sandwich.

Sean, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have spent my pre-turket day sleeping in because I am SICK. Wahoo. Dealing with runny noses beats sitting in smoke-infested offices any day of the week (sorta). Here's hoping I stop running before tomorrow, lest I be banned (or, worse yet, ban myself) from any familial functions.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm at a relative's house. We got here yesterday and are leaving Saturday morning on the ten-hour drive. I'm bloated but happy because they've been feeding me nonstop (or at least leaving food on serving plates on all the tables and counters!). Mother, Aunt and I went shopping this morning and I finished buying Christmas presents for my friends (either I'm really fast or I don't have any), so half the day is gone, yay. It's nice to see family, but there's very little to say to them. Perhaps better than being at school, perhaps not.

Maria, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There is no need to drag me to see Harry Potter, unless you feed me any more of those brownies, then we might have to locate a wheelbarrow.

hank, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hank *speaks*! You know, sir, Samantha really LURVES you, she keeps saying so. It therefore must be true. :-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm in Victoria right now with my cousin and her husband (we're taking a break; I'm checking e-mail and ILX; they're watching Westwing)... Nice thing is that this is the first year I'm all out avoiding a U.S. Thanksgiving.. (Canada's Thanksgiving was last month) (STICKIN' IT TO DA TURKEY!)

Brian MacDonald, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

do me a favour and ravage the bookstores on Princess Street ?
oh i how i miss my fair Victoria

anthony, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

seven years pass...

So what are your plans?

Our director is letting us go at noon. I have some work to do today, and I'll me best to get it out. Such a classic phone-it-in day though.

We've already had the family thanksgiving so I'm relishing a long weekend with no obligations. Options on the agenda:

-a tailgate for the Texas/A&M game with fried turkeys and free beer

-writing a paper comparing Oedipus and Death of a Salesman for my boyfriend's English class (okay this is a must, not an option)

-knitting baby sweaters

-writing

-xmas shopping

-trying to drag someone to see Twilight again with me

-would like to put up the tree but a month away seems too early

ILx?

La Push It (Susan), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

I'll be in a small room with no windows til 11pm! WHEEE

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:09 (seventeen years ago)

got to get those pie fixins!

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

x-post

Are you at least getting turkey?

What kind of pies? I'm having xmas at my house for the first time this year (well just my brother and his family. The rest of my family has stopped celebrating any holidays at all.) Bringing out the best: tamales, banana pudding, and fudge.

La Push It (Susan), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:13 (seventeen years ago)

Today I will be mostly writing a 15 page paper due tonight, baking cupcakes for thanksgiving, making a stew for dinner and packing. Ugh.

Lady Gorgorrand (ENBB), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

i think imna make an australian apple pie and maybe a strawberry rubarb or pecan

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

Pecan! It's the worst pie for you but the best tasting.

Lady Gorgorrand (ENBB), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

maybe i will make all three :)

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

good plan

Lady Gorgorrand (ENBB), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

im dreading going to the insaneo supermarket tho - maybe i will save it for the middle of the nite

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:19 (seventeen years ago)

The last two are two of my faves. How is pecan pie the worst?? My mother-in-law has the best recipe. It's pretty much solid pecans rather than a top layer of nut with the rest being soft and treacly.

La Push It (Susan), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:19 (seventeen years ago)

lol do u guys know abt clear pie - its like pecan w/o the pecans - top w/cool whip!

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

Pecan pie is just usually the higest in terms of fat and calories which obv means it's the best and most awesome!

Oh shit the supermarket. I have to go too. Maybe I should shower and go now because it's still early-ish.

Clear pie???

Lady Gorgorrand (ENBB), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

should prob just hit the supermarket right now :/

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

Black Friday anyone? I hate being such a consumer but having four kiddos btw 3-9 to buy for makes me gift crazy. I want to be their Santa Claus. Also there's the grown kid who lives with me and keeps sending me e-mails about who will have various Xbox 360 crap on sale this weekend.

I truly dread hitting the stores this weekend. That might push my limits in terms of tolerating the mass of humanity.

La Push It (Susan), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

No way will I be shopping this weekend. I can't handle the crowds and craziness.

Tomorrow morning we have to drive to Long Island. I hope that most people will travel today and that if we leave early enough it won't be too bad traffic wise.

Lady Gorgorrand (ENBB), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

hmm, not a bad idea. He was just laid-off and srsly my nieces and nephew are my top priority. Maybe we should hold off presents for each other until after xmas. But he has been waiting patiently to receive COD 5 as an xmas gift. I would hate to disappoint.

La Push It (Susan), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

Manchego Bay (G00blar), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

Driving to Michigan tomorrow to my sisters party. She ordered a Turducken which is something new. Will listen to the Lions game on the drive up. I'm bringing my bowling ball so Friday looks like a beer/bowling afternoon with the nephew.

I'm sitting at my desk with my recipes working up a grocery list. Next, I'll work on my list of what I'm doing this evening/tonite. THEN, I'll work on my big game day plan. Lists!

Ai Lien, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

I approve of this use of work time.

I'm in awe of people who pull of the big dinner, especially by themselves. The first xmas after my grandmother passed away my aunt and I attempted to recreate her traditional dinner. It completely kicked our ass and I couldn't believe she managed to do it by herself every year.

My family has never had a together-holiday since. Maybe it's our fault b/c we f'ed up the fruit salad. :(

La Push It (Susan), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

on my way to the CT train. Wish I hadn't awakened at 3:45 a.m. :p

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

Today -- knocking off a slew of winter quarter prep work so I don't have to think about it at all later, taking advantage of another quiet day (as noted when I started this thread!), plus one last Trader Joe's visit for resupplies

Tomorrow -- dinner with friend Stripey and her family

Friday -- work again! (which means I don't have to work any other holidays and can finish up the rest of winter quarter prep work on an even quieter day) Then a party at a friend's place near campus right after work.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:56 (seventeen years ago)

i have to fly later today, which is perhaps my least favorite thing to do.

lauren, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

Writing a brief, then going out to hear some live music with my wife and some friends who just got back into the country from the UK. WOOT!

I am excitedly making my sweet potato costume for a Thanksgiving wedding in Los Angeles where "pilgrim, native american and new world vegetable costumes are encouraged"!

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

Nicole, we're always open the day after Thanksgiving for short hours and since we're open most holidays we have to divvy up coverage. I like taking that day for a slew of reasons -- I don't go home for Thanksgiving anyway, so that frees it up for everyone else if they want/need to travel, it's always TOTALLY dead so it's not really stressful at all, as mentioned it lets me catch up on winter quarter stuff well in advance to knock out a lot of reserves things, and the hours worked turn in to comp time that I apply towards a mandatory three days that has to be taken as vacation during the Xmas break. (Seriously, there are three days that have to be either handled as vacation or comp time. I'll build up the comp time, thanks.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

whoa! xpost @ tuber-man wedding

Manchego Bay (G00blar), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

xxpost, will you have marshmallows?

Our university completely closes down between Dec. 22 - Jan. 5. Which is awesome. Then just a week later we get a three-day weekend for MLK day. Unfortunately, it's a long stretch to Memorial Day after that.

La Push It (Susan), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

We're pretty good with the staff holidays in the first half of the year, we get MLK, President's, Cesar Chavez, Memorial Day.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

Cesar Chavez

! Seriously? Our state is now 40% Hispanic or so and we're totally dissed on this one.

La Push It (Susan), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, it's kinda taken the place of Easter as an official day off. But yeah, state holiday.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

that's pretty cool.

collardio gelatinous, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

i ended up getting a western omelette.

collardio gelatinous, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

Meanwhile UCI shuts down from Dec. 24th to Jan. 1, and as mentioned three of those days off have to be cashed in via vacation or comp. Unfun. But I've built up enough comp time to cash that in, which is allowing me to finish work on Dec. 19th with a half day and then actually use vacation time for vacation by flying up that afternoon to SF, so for the first time in a long time I can be at my sis's birthday directly on the 20th and then just hang around in the Bay Area and Carmel through the 28th. (I was tempted to add on a vacation day for Jan. 2 but I actually want to use that day just to catch up on all the Reserves requests that will have been hanging fire in the meantime...)

I don't really mind going to extended-family Thanksgivings -- I'm driving to my cousin's place in Peoria tomorrow -- but I have to say, I'm increasingly envious of friends who are either not particularly close to their families or whose families are so far away that it's not worth it and who therefore just have a big booze-fueled potluck instead.

jaymc, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 18:32 (seventeen years ago)

We've lived very far from all extended family for so many years now that Thanksgiving has long-since become my family's holiday, rather than a holiday I spend with extended family (e.g. Christmas). For years we've made a tradition of inviting people over who have no place else to go---there are lots of these people in university towns. It's always a blast.

Euler, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 18:45 (seventeen years ago)

Nice. You're doing good work there!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 November 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

I'm at a worksite; everyone emphasizes they're happy to have me here but they can't quite say what I'll be doing as part of this project. What the hell, as long as they sign off on my timesheet....

Dead day today, just finishing up a grad school app and catching up with friends. Might head down to the Zen Center for the evening service. Gotta work tomorrow morning, hopefully get off early to hit the road for Mom's & a late afternoon Thanksgiving lunch & hopefully enough drinking to make me forget the arguments about Obama by morning. They're leaving town Black Friday morning and I've got the day off, so it's back up to ATX with another 36 hours to kill before work. Not sure what I'll do with it yet.

I have a part-time job (so far! I'm applying and interviewing for many others!) and requested time off for Thanksgiving, so I just have no work and no income this week. I am a little depressed that I can't go home for Christmas through New Year's like all of my roommates are doing, because they are mostly students and one person with a good job and tons of vacation. But I have the 30th & 31st off, so I can either invite people or head to NY for New Year's Eve, and that could be exciting.

i wasnt in the doldrums yesterday. i was hunky dory. today im not so good. shitty football on the tv, old friends from highschool calling me wanting to get together (i am avoiding them), and no thanksgiving dinner to boot. my dad had shoulder surgery yesterday and im sitting in his room right now keeping him company. he cant sleep and the pain is too intense, and he doesn't want to be alone. im so anxious i just tried to rearrange my parents cupboards and fridge. i just washed the butter dish and replaced it with a new fresh stick of butter. outside the sky is covered by a blanket of dirty grey.

i cant wait for tomorrow.

At home, sitting around reading ILX / a book and listening to music, kind of wish I was doing something more, but not really wanting to do much more.

Went through final inspection of my new house, but I don't close on it until Monday. I could spend the weekend organizing and sorting through my stuff, but why bother? I have a whole house to unpack it into.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, but we're living abroad this year and so the kids have school. It's a totally normal day here. It's a weird feeling. On the plus side we strolled along Boulevard Haussmann last night and gazed at the grands magasins, all lit up with Christmas displays in place, with people selling roasted chestnuts. It was marvelous. So I think it will just be a different kind of holiday this year.

I'm going to pick up several days' worth of Chinese food in a little while (and still going to family t'giving tomorrow).

Oh, and in 4 minutes I'm quitting my email program.

Lucky me, everyone I support seems to have dug deep last night before splitting for the weekend so that I might enjoy the privilege of scaling To-Do Mountain this morning. THANKS CHUMS.

It's raining, and I have half as many meetings as usual, but none of them are good.

My routine in recent years has been to spend Thanksgiving with my gf's family and then Xmas with my own. My recently-brainwashed aunt (by marriage) brought her Trumpite new husband to the turkey day festivities last year (hosted by my cousin) and apparently has decided, counter to everyone else's preference, that an annual spectacle of instability is the best way to celebrate the holiday. So I'm only vicariously experiencing the doldrums of my otherwise sane family members.

this is the fakest work week

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 November 2019 17:21 (six years ago)

Judging by last year's post and my experience over the last several days, it's a fake week for everybody else who's been whipping all their shit into my inbox just before their mad rush out of town. At least very little new has come through today and I'm just burning off that prior glut.

War Crimes Tribunal of the Network Stars (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 27 November 2019 17:32 (six years ago)

Luckily I am NOT at work today, because today are my 50th birthday. So, pluses and minuses, I guess.

Nothing's worse than employers at a "gig" job who say "Oh, leave early!!" as the supervisor says "and I'll adjust your timesheet." (ie take money away from you)
