I'm going to guess "no" since we footed the bill for protecting your cheese-smelling asses from communism and terrorism.

Are you saying my ass smells of cheese or likes smelling cheese?

Nil, Friday, 29 October 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not a very nice way to go about asking for a loan, Jon.

adam... (nordicskilla), Friday, 29 October 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Also - you'll get screwed by the exchange rate.

adam... (nordicskilla), Friday, 29 October 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Could I have some cheese, please.

Anyway, my question was serious, asside from my pigheadness.

sometimes i like to pretend i am very small and warm (ex machina), Friday, 29 October 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

can i plz have comunism and my money back.

:|, Friday, 29 October 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

or rahter, can the government have my money back.

:|, Friday, 29 October 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, You might want to ask for a refund cos I dont think you protected Poland (for example) from communism between 1945 and 1990 particualarly well, or Spain (or even the UK) from terrorism.

Nil, Friday, 29 October 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, well let us know when you repay the debt of HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF SLAIN AMERICAN BOYS who defended you ponces from Germany.

sometimes i like to pretend i am very small and warm (ex machina), Friday, 29 October 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

our country supported Germany so frankly you're not getting a cent off us.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 October 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

According to that logic, Jon, they owe the defeat of Nazism to Russia. Also, per capita, Britain and France lost more dead in WWII than we did.

Also the French helped us win the American Revolution. So thank a Frenchman, because if it weren't for them we'd all be speaking English today.

Anyone got stats on Allied repayments to the US over the last 50 years? Didnt the US take ownership of some UK assets in America as upfront payment towards arms?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 29 October 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Public debt. This entry records the cumulative total of all government borrowings less repayments that are denominated in a country's home currency. Public debt should not be confused with external debt, which reflects the foreign currency liablities of both the private and public sector and must be financed out of foreign exchange earnings.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 29 October 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, per capita, Britain and France lost more dead in WWII than we did.

Not just per capita - of total dead, Russia (most at 29 million), Poland, Germany, Yugoslavia, Romania, Hungary, France, Italy and Great Britain lost more lives than the US (413,000). I don't think it's rediculous to attribut the allied victory more to the Soviet union than to the USA. (that doesn't devalue any wasted life, of course).

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 29 October 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Jsut curious: does anyone know how the pre-Great War population of Russia (meaning all former USSR countries) compares to the population today? I was thinking after WWI, the Revolution, WWII and Stalin how anyone could be left.
