Scourage (Haberdager), Friday, 18 August 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

I am angry at Theo Walcott's girlfriend for taking up all the front page space that should by rights be reserved for attractive Home Counties posh girls hugging each other.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 18 August 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

I was at home with my family when I discovered my results online. Maybe the photographers only invite you to a group hug if you're an attractive young lady. Or if you got seventeen A-levels.

Scourage (Haberdager), Friday, 18 August 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

need more photos of people looking aghast, crushed, despairing...something I can relate to more.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 18 August 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

They could just get attractive home counties girls who were crushed because they only got three As and a B, that'd still be money.

Maybe there's a DVD in this.

The Daily Telegraph of all publications had a picture of a racially diverse group of boys on the front page, possibly to show off how open today's Tory party is to modern Britain and we should all vote for them.

I remember when you could rely on the Tory press to be classist and lecherous. This is all David Cameron's fault.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 21 August 2006 08:21 (nineteen years ago)

uh but anyway, this whole 'getting results online thing' feels kind of sad... wasn't it all about piling down to the pub and whatnot?

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

nah, stayed in, had a beer or two in front of the telly. i didn't live that near to many of my schoolmates, and they were mostly all on holiday anyway. it didn't feel that sad at the time.

it's different, of course, at university. :)

Scourage (Haberdager), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

i think, and this is sad, that my a-levels results day was... the happiest of my life. :((((((((((((((((((

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:33 (nineteen years ago)

is that an ILE thread? 'Happiest day of my life'...hmm, for me, it was probably just an uneventful summer's day upon which I somehow felt truly content for 24 hours straight...

Scourage (Haberdager), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

There's Your last day of school, but that's not quite the same.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

there i seem not to have found it *quite* so great. mind playing trizzicks, or, perhaps, on the whole, these things are hard to be consistent about.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

I got lousy A level results...and this is the 20th anniversary of said occasion. Blimey.

I know we've probably done this to death before, but I never read this in the papers...is it or is it not true that O and A level grades used to be determined on a statistical basis? A population histogram was plotted of all the results for a particular subject/exam board combination, and grades were allocated the top 10%, next 15%, etc. So, if half the people taking the exam got 90% - it wouldn't automatically get you an 'A', but only if you were inside the top 10% of results.

In this way, pass rates and grade rates hardly ever changed, regardless of whether it was an easy paper (JMB Maths O Level 1984 - 90+ for an A) or a hard paper (JMB Chemistry O Level 1982 - I think 45 got you a B or something). You were being measured against your peers, not just a scorechart.

Or am I totally misremembering this? And if I'm not, why doesn't someone just say, "Yeah, we changed the system in 199x - 75% gets you an 'A' in all circumstances now."

(This is not me rattling off excuses for my 1986 A-C-E-O grades; I was just rubbish).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 21 August 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i think it was like that. and i think e.g. the daily mail want a return to them days. it's kind of the opposite problem now, from the universities' pov.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

Bloody hell, it's ten years since *my* A-levels. I can still remember my exact result for Chemistry: 483 points out of a total 600. The A-grade boundary was 480.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 21 August 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know how things are in the UK, but in Dublin the real action occurs when the Inter Cert results come out... these are like equivalents of your GCSEs, and results night sees the city over-run with drunken, out of control teenagers.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't General Studies a random hotchpotch of other subjects half-arsedly thrown together? I remember people saying it was really easy and they did it so they could tell everyone they had four A-Levels.

A-Levels were still the hardest academic challenge I can remember facing, although I blame that almost entirely on MATHS.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 21 August 2006 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

yeah we *had* to do GenStuds. it was bullshit. you couldn't revise for it. but presumably as a sixth-form college you get more money the more subjects you 'teach'.

most universities do not count it as an a-level.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

We didn't have to do it as an exam subject, although we had to do it as an 'extra'. But I did the exam version for the above mentioned 'it's a piece of piss' reasons. (And yes I got an A but I got an A in my other three subjects as well so nerrrrrr).

All I remember is having to fill in boxes very carefully on the exam paper because it was marked by what was probably in those days a very high-tech computer. I don't suppose ability to colour inside the lines was what we were really being examined on though. Oh I also remember writing an essay about the national lottery.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

[i got 'a's in my other three subjects too; i was just trying to get a rise out of the lex!]

Enrique's Fragile Self-esteem (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

my essay concerned trouser width and musical style.

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

we had to do gen studs as an 'extra' but didn't sit the exam because it was 'meaningless' - UNLESS you did four proper a-levels, which i did (and got all As obv), so i didn't do any gen studs at all.

gen studs was divided into things like 'life skills' and 'basic computing', at our school. it is possible that you can tell i didn't do it.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

A very worthy topic.

xpost

Archel (Archel), Monday, 21 August 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, my 'A' was in Gen Studs. There were sections on Spatial Relations, Maths, English, Current Affairs, History, Geography and you had to write a couple of essays. It was remarkable (to me) how many people studying Arts/Humanities A levels, but with a Maths O level in their pocket, struggled with the maths section of the Gen Studs paper. Same with science students and the English section.

I did fantastically well at all of it, of course, which made up for my sorry efforts in the "proper" subjects.

(JMB General Studies A level was the only Gen Studs qualification accepted as a valid grade by some universities at the time; maybe other exam boards just got you to do some colouring in or something).

Bashment Jakes (Enrique), Thursday, 24 August 2006 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

I thought they only brought General Studies in ten years or so ago, but Michael's post suggests otherwise.

As for this, is it really worth making six year olds take a GCSE if they're only going to get a G in it? Presumably they'll retake it a few years later in order to achieve a higher grade?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 24 August 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

This is the best picture. It has that crucial ambiguity - is it joy? Is it despair? Is it both? Is there a less attractive girl not showing any leg who happens to be celebrating six As, just out of shot? That sort of thing.

Matt DC, Thursday, 16 August 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

The two girls from Reuters are the same two girls from the Times, aren't they? How do the UK's photographers know which schools to turn up as? Do their press officers send out covert photos beforehand?

I don't think it's a stretch to assume there are newspaper editors with daughters at posh schools.

Uncomfortable images of Alan Rusbridger or Paul Dacre, in the throes of a midlife crisis, letching all over their daughter's teenage friends every time they turn up at the house.

Matt DC, Friday, 17 August 2007 10:46 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno, but I wouldn't be surprised by that (not that I've ever seen the Cambridge one).

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 14 August 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

Cambridge one is enormous, just checking the web for verification. I've actually heard of the Exeter one before.

Also before Dom storms along in full sub-editor-scorned mode, I appreciate now that there is in fact no apostrophe in Wetherspoons.

Just got offed, Thursday, 14 August 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

I'd say that somewhere like the walkabout on Shepherd's Bush Green has got a bigger internal bar area than Exeter Wetherspoons, but no garden.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 14 August 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

I reckon the Walkabout in Bristol is bigger than the one on Shepherd's Bush Green.

Em suggested that this year all the pictures, instead of being of blonde girls lezzing it up over envelopes, is of spotty bespectacled teenage boys crying at not getting a place because of the government's almighty-15-year-get-everyone-to-university-by-making-A-levels-easier-then-cutting-the-places fuck-up.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 21 August 2009 10:13 (sixteen years ago)

When did the A-level hottie phenomenon actually begin? I'll admit to failure to notice outright hotness of 99.5 per cent of the admittedly attractive girls pictured. Has it always been the case or did it just become something noticed by male ILXors upon the approach of 30?

gossip and complaints (suzy), Friday, 21 August 2009 10:25 (sixteen years ago)

Think Private Eye noted it about a decade ago at least.

Tuncay Stryder (Matt DC), Friday, 21 August 2009 10:30 (sixteen years ago)

it's definitely become more prevalent - would probably date it to the time when girls started outperforming boys in exams so picture editors were let off the leash a bit because it was "the story". but it's always been received wisdom in newspapers that both men and women prefer looking at pictures of women. (not sure how true this is, but publishers obviously believe it.)

joe, Friday, 21 August 2009 10:37 (sixteen years ago)

djmartian, Friday, 21 August 2009 10:55 (sixteen years ago)

Joe, I can get with the idea of the pix appearing just in time to trivialize young women's achievements re: exams - it's an interesting premise, and probably subconscious competition/goalpost-moving in whitemale land - but unless you have something major to share with the group re. your expertise in newspapers, telling me what's 'received wisdom' in the industry is deeeeeeeeply ironic.

I know some of you are concerned that we haven't used any photos of boys. Believe me, we are trying ... literally all the pictures from photo agencies that we use are of girls.

private eye had a couple of pieces in the last few weeks about how the guardian's been sending round memos saying they need to "brighten up" the news pages. taking a leaf from the telegraph. as a result they ran file pics of girls hugging to celebrate their results five days early, which is like when shops put up their christmas decorations in august imo.

in other news, the first pics of twins have just landed on the wires, so presumably they'll be up on the websites soon.

Matt DC, Thursday, 18 August 2011 09:13 (fourteen years ago)

xpost I didn't see that.

It's funny, I've resisted having a 'pop' at MicMac as I'd never seen his act on TV, just bits of him introducing the next comic on stage (and his expert analysis on BGTalent, obv).

And then I did, and it was much the same as his introductions, i.e. nothing to actually remember.

Do kids really still physically go into school and open envelopes with their results printed on pieces of paper? How quaint.

Wish I'd planned ahead a bit further as I'm going out for dinner in Blackheath this evening and the place is going to be *full* of annoying posh kids out on the lash. And also frustrated looking kids who can't go out on the lash because their parents have taken them out for a celebratory dinner and they're looking awkward and wishing they were elsewhere.

Matt DC, Thursday, 18 August 2011 09:32 (fourteen years ago)

I would have thought the reason this crops up year after year is simple - kids graduate every year. They wanna see them and their kind in the papers and get excited. As far as they care its all about them, for that moment. They dont give a shit it's happened for millenia. I know I didnt in year 12.
