To all My Fellow New Dads and New-Dads-On-Deck!

Happy Father's Day.

May You All Diligently Do your Dadly Duties!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 20 June 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Rah the Dads! I'll be calling mine here later this afternoon...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 June 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

We don't believe in Father's Day here.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 20 June 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I completely forgot about it, not that I'd be doing anything special anyway.

Dads aren't really into this shit, are they?

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Sunday, 20 June 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My dad is interesting in it to the extent that whilst he doesn't celebrate it, the failure by me or our kid to note it through cards and a gift would be hurtful to him.

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 20 June 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Dads are awkward cunts.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 20 June 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I no longer speak to my father, but I'm trying to right his countless wrongs by being a doting dad.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 20 June 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

That's beautiful, Alex! And Happy Father's Day! Woot woot!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 20 June 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It's slightly weird - if it didn't exist, he wouldn't give a shit. But since it does, it would be noticeable if I didn't 'observe' it. That's the insidiousness of the whole thing. Ho hum.

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 20 June 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I love my dad, btw. Maybe I'll call him to tell him.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 20 June 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I would. I enjoyed talking to my Dad today. We had good football chat and family larfs. I'm really pleased with my relationship with my parents.

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 20 June 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

How much do people actually tell their dads that they love them? I've told my dad that I love him a few times, mostly when he was having neurosurgery, because, y'know, that was a big deal. But it was always met with an awkward silence and a quick goodbye and so I just don't bother trying anymore.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Sunday, 20 June 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

We don't tell each other we love each other in our family.

Ricardo (RickyT), Sunday, 20 June 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

it sounds uncomfortable.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 20 June 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I awoke this morning to a hug and a kiss, a card that said "I Love You" and breakfast, complete with milk spilled from the kitcken all the way to the bedroom. It is truly a wonderful day. Any other single dads out there?

rxreed (rxreed), Sunday, 20 June 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never hugged my father, I don't think.

He got shafted on a Father's Day present this year because it's impossible to buy him books or DVDs and have no clue what else to get.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 20 June 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

We always tell each other and hug too. We all take after my mum; my dad didn't, but my mum made him ;-)

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 20 June 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

How come fathers' day is the same date in the US and UK but mothers' day is different?

Madchen: Happy farvers day
Dad: Thanks. It's a load of commercial old rubbish, isn't it?
Madchen: Did my card arrive in time?
Dad: Uh, no.

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 20 June 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

My stepfather gets a little upset when his stepson doesn't remember, so I try to find him a card, but it's so hard to find an appropriate one. I also made him a pair of socks which went over very well.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 20 June 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I got my dad Cowboy Bebop but I don't think he is very pleased. (I had reason to think it is consistent with his taste. I swear.)

Father's Day History

rxreed (rxreed), Sunday, 20 June 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not saying that's made up, but it reads like it. Good ole' America!

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 20 June 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say Father's Day is right on. Just as Mother's Day. My dad's gone, but it made me think of him a little. I sometimes wonder what he was like, compared with me, at certain times in life.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz (gaz), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I called my dad and he was watching "Passion of the Christ" on his new Father's Day requisite DVD-player thingummy. I made my excuses and left

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

...he was watching his thoroughly bootlegged copy of said film on his DVD player? SO IMMORAL.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 June 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

quite un-Christlike, I must agree

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, unless he was nailing himself up in sympathy. Which would be a bit bold, admittedly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be happy to do that for him

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Monday, 21 June 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I got my dad an Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk CD.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I took my dad out to lunch with his wife and her mother. My father looked like a cuban drug lord. Some sort of Cabana Shirt, with silk slacks and white shoes. He's taking this Tony Soprano thing to new heights. The plan was for him to come over to our house for a fathers day BBQ, but he decided that I owed it to him to take him out to eat. Owed him a lunch for all the years of being an asshole?

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 21 June 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven months pass...
Dad Likes Music, Right?
You bet he does. What better way to show how much you appreciate him than with the gift of sound? Regardless of what your dad is into, we have something for him in Rock, Jazz, Classical, Folk, Country, World, Vocals, or Box Sets.

mope, Thursday, 26 May 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Just wanted to wish all the daddies -- Alex, n'licious, Douglas, etc. -- a happy day.

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

is it today? guess i'd better call my dad.

jody l'anti-vierge (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

It is indeed today. Tried calling mine but nobody's home.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

my dad called me this afternoon, which made me feel very guilty. in fairness: i was going to ring him in the evening. the impatient sod ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Happy father's day, fuckwit, in your hovel.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Erm, should I ask?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

i sent my dad an e-card. i was afraid that if i called him he'd start lecturing me about something.

jody l'anti-vierge (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

its not father's day here. september.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Sunday, 19 June 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Unfun, Jody. :-/

Called my dad and he was in fine spirits and enjoyed his card. Got him a belated gift or two today he will enjoy. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 June 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

I visited Dad's gravesite with Mom on Father's Day. We were able to score two beautiful bunches of flowers at Wal-Mart for $3.69 each, which meant plenty of flowers for my dad and her dad, i.e. Grandpa, who is buried in the same area that Dad's buried in (they even share the same tombstone). Oh, and we also took our little puppydogbabby along. We all spent like 5 - 10 minutes at the gravesite, then picked up a pie and a soft pretzel at the Sam's Club close to the house -- the pie so that we could take something to a barbecue we were invited to later on that day and the pretzel so we could snack on something. Both were insanely good, BTW.

So, yeah, Father's Day was enjoyable overall. With the exception of the "God, it's so incredibly SUNNY!" weather, which you guys will probably already know causes me to grumble.

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 20 June 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

we went to a garage sale, fathers day is really difficult, because i dont like him and we have been really raw with him

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 20 June 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

its not father's day here. september.

yeh, here neither. not on june 20th it isn't.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Yesterday we managed to pull my father away from whatever MMORPG he's playing these days long enough to eat a huge meal of roast beast and sauted spinach and drop biscuits and stuff, then he took me and Lukas for a ride in the back of a truck, Taliban style. Then we went and caught like 4 small-mouth bass.

And Lukas made me this thing at his day camp out of a picture of himself and popsicle sticks that said "HAPPY FATHER'S DAY DUDE".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

That does sound marvellous, m'licious!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

Happy Father's Day to all my fellow dads, as it says at the beginning of the thread (I haven't read the rest): new dads like Pleasant Plains, classic dads like Alex in NYC, Rock Hardy, lovebug and nickalicious, I've-got-a-surfeit-of-dadness dads like Haikunym, britishes and UK dads like Tom, Noodle Vague, Onimo and Grout, and all the other dads I've forgotten to mention.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 17 June 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

Although this doesn't seem like the Father's Day thread that I remember, the one where Beth P. told me to mow the @#!&%*!-ing lawn!

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 17 June 2007 02:37 (eighteen years ago)

Which somehow reminds me that I forgot to that other new dad, crossword Matt.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 17 June 2007 02:38 (eighteen years ago)

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 17 June 2007 02:38 (eighteen years ago)

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 17 June 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

and, god bless him, xhuxk

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 17 June 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

thanks, k.

Pleasant Plains, Sunday, 17 June 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

You're quite welcome.

Sorry that I also forgot Michael Jones, PJ Miller and, on this side of the Atlantic, gypsy mothra.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 17 June 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

I want to be a dad someday. Have a good day dudes!!!!

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 17 June 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks Ken, I got a great present when the kiddo went to London, had a fantastic time for a month, then came home safe. Getting breakfast in bed tomorrow will be nice too, though.

Happy Solidarity Day to the ILXor dads out there. Hit one golf ball or something.

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 17 June 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

bbq dudes

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 17 June 2007 03:22 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm, yeah, maybe I'll grill something, but fuck, it's hard to get out there and fan burning charcoal when it's already 94 degrees.

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 17 June 2007 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

Happy fathers day to all you dads and dads-to-be!

Maria :D, Sunday, 17 June 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks everybody! I hope all your days has been as cool as mine.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 17 June 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

To all My Fellow New Dads and New-Dads-On-Deck!

{checks calendar - confirms state of daddyhood for past 21 years - mopes}

Aimless, Sunday, 17 June 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

LOOT:

I got
* book from mother-in-law
* new Converse sneakers
* card from Beeps that begins with "Although we've only known each other for a few months..."
* hardcover bound book of Beeps' first three months, as told in pictures.

I could sleep on the futon in the nursery for the next year for stuff like that.

Pleasant Plains, Sunday, 17 June 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

Awwwwww!

happy father's day to all you dadly ILXors!

Jaq, Sunday, 17 June 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

I got John Peel's auto/biography, a lap desk for late night reading/sudoku-ing in bed, and the most amazing, wonderful card I could ever imagine from the kiddo. I'm not much of a cryer, but this had me on the wibbling edge. Mostly too personal to share, except for "Thank you for your crazy music, even the stuff that makes my ears ring." What a great kid.

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 17 June 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

When I went into the 'Ling's room this morning, there was a bag on the floor with an envelope on it marked "Daddy." Inside the bag were a new PS2 game, a really nice shirt, and a card asking what kind of stone-fruit tree I'd like in the back yard. I picked the envelope up, and asked him "Hey, what does this say?" He stared thoughtfully at it for a moment, then said "...Daddy." (Note: he is 27 months old.) I was filled with pride.

Douglas, Sunday, 17 June 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

I got a cake from which the sweeties on top had already been eaten, a card and a home made money box - also pancakes in bed for breakfast. Hurrah!

Ned Trifle II, Sunday, 17 June 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

aw my hubby got a punch in the nuts.

teeny, Sunday, 17 June 2007 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

I was just messing with you, Hazmatt.

Sorry, Aimless, I almost mentioned you in my post but I couldn't quite remember so I erred on the side of caution.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 18 June 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

My dad lent me some books and the boy fixed my plate for me at lunch which was cute. Today I discovered that mayonnaise on hot dogs tastes awful, llama spit tastes awful, and that shaved pomeranians look like tiny bears.

nickalicious, Monday, 18 June 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

aw my hubby got a punch in the nuts.

One way of keeping him a one kid daddy. ;-)

I forgot all about it. :-( Didn't even realize it.

nathalie, Monday, 18 June 2007 07:37 (eighteen years ago)

i was told to shut up, and was called a fucking dick and a fucking jerk (by my wife, not the baby). happy first father's day! I'm sure that once the kid starts talking he'll be saying similar.

akm, Monday, 18 June 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

He'll probably just post about it on a message board somewhere.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

eleven months pass...

Reviving this a bit early not only to wish all the dads on here well -- and all those wishing their dads well in general -- but to say that if you could spare my dad some good thoughts it'll be appreciated: he's going in for emergency hip replacement surgery in a few hours. Like the link says, I'm sure he'll be fine but I hope it's not too surprising I'm feeling a little jumpy right this second! Please do feel free to leave him any well wishes on that blog entry and he'll read them when he gets a chance.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 14 June 2008 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

Aw, Nedders, here's some sympathetic pats on the shoulder for you. *pat, pat*

Abbott, Saturday, 14 June 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)

Happy Father's Day, everybody. Best wishes to Ned's dad.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 14 June 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

sunny successor, Sunday, 15 June 2008 02:29 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sure he'll be fine, Ned. My dad's walking around on his fourth left hip joint -- the one he was born with and three replacements. He never slows down and keeps wearing 'em out!

xpost -- obviously they hate your guts! It's probably the funny accent.

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 15 June 2008 02:31 (seventeen years ago)

sunny successor, Sunday, 15 June 2008 02:33 (seventeen years ago)

sunny successor, Sunday, 15 June 2008 02:47 (seventeen years ago)

No, there's no active thread anymore. Something happened, something terrible.

brownie, Sunday, 15 June 2008 02:55 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks all. The surgery was scheduled for 4 pm my time, and I'm a touch on edge in that I've heard nothing yet, but perhaps this is for the best. No matter.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 15 June 2008 03:00 (seventeen years ago)

Mom called, everything fine. Yay. :-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 15 June 2008 03:54 (seventeen years ago)

That's good news Ned, I'm glad it went well. Wishing him a quick and strong recuperation.

Also, happy Father's Day to all you ILX dads!

Jaq, Sunday, 15 June 2008 04:51 (seventeen years ago)

I just spotted this thread (as I spend my Father's Day on emergency projects at the office; It's horrible being here today instead of with my family, but I have little choice). Ned, I'm very glad to hear your father's surgery went well. And Happy Father's Day to all the other ILX'or dads.

so much jazz when i was a kid. he didn't have any jazz friends in connecticut to go to NYC with. he just wanted company. i always made sure he promised that we could go to record stores/comic book stores/book stores in the village if i went and saw chico freeman or george coleman or cecil mcbee with him. i loved the taste of coca cola in jazz clubs. always tasted swankier for some reason.

I see James Redd et al. has started a minor tradition of giving me a shout out. I feel honored to accept it and would like to pass on my best wishes for the happiness to ilx and ilx-adjacent fathers everywhere.

I can't remember if I told you when my father died in 2008. I probably did, if I wasn't on one of my years-long breaks from here.

Yes, also happy Father's Day in memory of fathers no longer with us. (I'm fortunate to still have mine, talking to him in just a few minutes.)

Yeah, my wife's dad died in 2002, mine died in 2014. We may no longer have fathers, but I like being a father. This pretty much sums it up:

I know this one has its extra-special challenges for you. No need for you to comment if you don’t want to.

when i came downstairs this morning my dad told me i was a good father. he lives with me. it wasn't like a fathers day surprise or anything. i knew he'd be there. but still. felt nice. he just turned 88.
