The ZRH terminal's color scheme is blue-grey and slate with a touch of red from the Swiss souvenir shop. I have an unconscious feeling that background music is playing somewhere but in true Enoian spirit I can't discern it. Large windows face the main runway and taxiways and there's just enough sunlight filtering through the clouds to vaguely color everything outside. With the exception of some ugly Americans (the ugliest being a loud guy in a Green Bay Packers sweatshirt who was berating a Swiss shopclerk because he couldn't take a liquid-filled snowglobe on a plane) most everyone here is pretty well dressed - businessmen taking one of the many outgoing flights to France, Germany, and Dubai.

Overall, I feel like I'm in a photo shoot for Nokia advertisments.

It sure is pretty though.

and the chocolate/sweet shop was great.

I so did not think much of Miami's airport the one time I was there, the exception being the Cuban sandwiches (which I'm sure are much better in town and all but compared to most airport food in general are manna from heaven).

Most beautiful airport (for real): Ushuaia in southern Argentina. Small, modern, all wood, huge ceilings.

I should have sought out this one the last time I was there. I had an hour to kill since after loading everyone on the plane and having us fasten the seat belts, they figured out there was a "loose piece of metal" on the bottom of the plane and we'd have to switch planes.

The Anchor Steam Brew Pub in the airport made a nice tuna sandwich that my expense account paid for, though.

I miss the days of being able to just wander around an airport. Each time I go through LAX, I get "locked" inside the international terminal which is basically just one long hallway with a newstand, a duty-free shop, and a Burger King.

LAX does have some of those caged in smoking areas that you can access even after you have been locked down. which is better then most

St Louis has smoking fishbowls, too! They're actually better than usual, b/c they're not completely enclosed so the 4th side is open to the terminal, they must just have really efficient ventilation systems (b/c you can't smell any smoke outside 'em).

The best is still Minneapolis, though -- the smoking section is attached to a honest-to-god BAR, and it's just around the corner and down the hall from the best used bookstore I have ever been in.

I liked Minneapolis with their tiny little escalators.

memphis has a bar you can still smoke in. in terminal c i think, i know it's not in the same terminal as american airlines.

I remember standing outside Oakland's airport, trying to work the machine that gives you a bus ticket to the BART station at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. It ate all my quarters and I just stood there wondering what I was going to do when the bus came. (It finally spit out a ticket saying that I still owed a dollar.)

I got on the bus and sort of spazzed out trying to explain to the driver that I had put in the full fare into the machine, but it had short-changed me.

She responded by saying "It's cool! Relax, man. Have a seat." That was the moment that California won me over.

nah. I was over there for work for the last couple of weeks. Little Rock is OK! I'd never spent any time there, other than passing through going to TX. Perhaps a little on the sleepy side, but they seem to have done a lot of things right that Mem got wrong.

Tomorrow I go from SNA to SEA. The best thing about SNA = the "FAA approved" takeoffs for reduced noise. Basically wind the plane up hard on the tarmac, release the brakes, zoom sharply up to a couple thousand feet, then cut the engines and coast out over the ocean. Eventually the engines get kicked back in and away you go.

yeah it's dumber than shit (as is ours), but at least it's more or less confined to Markham(?) in the downtown mall area. they extended ours (which is embarrassingly empty) off of Main, through the medical district where it finally peters out in Midtown, for no other apparent reason than to completely muck up the traffic flow on Madison. the only thing on this side of security is a starbucks and i think its closed now. i "landed" and got my luggage on airline A, but 12 hours late to catch my flight on airline B. Airline B's ticket desk isn't open till 5:30 AM, and even though they were there when i first got there, they couldn't get me standby for friday travel until friday.

airline A is the one that fucked up, but basically i fucked myself by trying to think this would work.

also, airline B is the expensive flight that work paid for and airline A was the cheap one i bought on my own.

future tip for all fliers: if youre somewhere around a continental "president's lounge" you can get free wireless just by parking near there

i got about 3.5 hours of sleep on a wooden bench.

the ticket desk that wasn't supposed to be open till 5:30 was open at 4:00. its a good thing too, because my situation required i get in a separate line being serviced by only two ticket agents. when i got in line there were only three or four people ahead of me but by the time i was at the front, there was a good 40 people in line behind me. apparently an entire flight to orlando got cancelled.

but i got on standby for the same flight i missed yesterday, and as of 30 mins ago i was the only one on the standby list.

i just had a breakfast bagel and i think i'm going back for another.

also, i'm at a little desk with a stool that looks like it used to have payphones at it as i type this. not slouched on the floor somewhere. life is so much better this side of security!

Checked in, I shall be at the airport tomorrow. Heathrow T4 seems to have the worst bars even of the shit selection at Heathrow. They seem to franchise them out to the worst chain pubs and restaurants in Britain. At least in T1 they have a giraffe franchise and you can get an acceptable bloody mary. T4 has weatherspoons, EST EST EST and Garfunkles.

Will of course be hell tomorrow as half of Britain will be attempting to leave through Heathrow.

Being on standby is the crappiest thing ever. Be thankful you aren't doing it at Gatwick which has the worst security queues ever when they check you onto your flight with 30 minutes to go until the plane pushes back off stance and there's still a two-hour security queue to get through when you're in a party of five, one of whom is elderly and cannot rush anywhere terribly effectively.

When we came back from Tampa earlier this year, there were the five of us on standby and only four standby places left on the plane, so my brother got left there for 24 hours while we just headed on home without him. He then got the only place on the next flight or would have been there for a further 24 hours. Your pain is being felt, gr8080.

(disclaimer: I have no idea what the security queues are like at O'Hare, but they can't be as bad as Gatwick where all domestic and international passengers get herded through the same bottleneck)

O'Hare can be pretty horrific, at least in the international Terminal. However the bar is right by the security queue and you can sit and drink until it dwindles or your flight gets so close that they start pulling people out of the queue.

My brother just approached a friendly looking queue-monitoring dude at the barriers and waved boarding passes at him and explained and the guy said he'd let us through. So my brother waved at me, I gathered up the parents and husband, and we walked down and the guy let us in, one at a time, into the front of different queues. Unfortunately (for them) the people behind us (queuing for a flight due to leave in about three hours or so) thought they'd got in on our wee game of queue-jumping and followed us down only to be told to get back in the queue upon production of their not-terribly-urgent boarding passes. The queue in which they'd now lost their places.

Can you just pretend you've not heard the call though, sit and drink, then go "whoops, silly me" and get let into the front of the queue though? We only did it because the silly mare on the BA check-in desk wouldn't check us in on standby seats until the check-in closed even though there were stacks of empty seats on the flight.

That's a brilliant strategy, and one I may try in future, to the wrath of everyone else in the queue. There is nothing more embarrassing than being the last person on a plane when everyone else is settled though, and everyone glaring at you because they know fine well they'd have got an early take-off slot if you hadn't been fannying around elsewhere.

Ouch that is harsh never seen that before. Of course a lot of airports don't have outlets and you have to search around for the ones the cleaners use.

basically got a high-quality mini-mall/food court in the terminal here and the internet is quick and @ $9.99 for 2 hours it's pretty worth it

they also have country singers that say shit over the PA like "hello, this is X from sugarland. remember, if you see any suspicious baggage throughout the terminal, please immediately notify the appropriate authorities," which is pretty rad

I've never flown Continental before so this is my first experience with LAX's Terminal 6. Not squalid but pretty worn down. On my way to SDF via Houston.

IAH is tremendously ugly. Terminals and passageways shoved together out of necessity with no regard to passenger traffic flow. Grafting TSA security checkpoints only magnifies things. Insult to injury: the first thing I see getting off the plane is the Fox News Store followed by a statue of George H W Bush.

On the plus side the breakfast plate special at Harlon's BBQ (eggs, bacon, grits, & biscuits/gravy) was outstanding and cost less than a single beer at LAX.

Further insult to injury: the Chautauqua (much-maligned CO feeder carrier) TundraJet you'll be on IAH-SDF.

i have 8 hours in the reykjavik airport! it is a decent airport, but not big. i ended up taking a really long walk around the parking lot in circles, pushing my luggage trolley and talking to myself while staring at a weird sculpture on top of a pile of rocks). then i discovered the free wireless. probably could've gone into the city and stored my stuff at the bus station, but i'm preparing for a summer of physical labor with EXTREME SLOTH.

8 hour layover in reijavik airport = trip to the blue lagoon, natural hot springs about half way to the town. You can rent everything, towels etc.

i heard that but i have nowhere to put my luggage, would have to unpack a 21-kilo backpack to find my swimsuit, and don't know where this blue lagoon IS. also, i'm really lazy, and haven't read my archaeological field manual like a good dig volunteer.

For a megasprawl, DEN is pretty nice. There was a bickering couple in the security line who were co-workers it seemed like. Everything they did was augmented with complaints, meeting unpreparedness, misplaced documents, etc. I wanted to shout "would you guys hurry up and have sex already!" at them.

I'm going to be in an airport on Saturday night/Sunday morning, so if as many of you as possible can please also sit in an airport at the same time, I would appreciate it.

My flight to Las Vegas was delayed just long enough to ensure that all of the food options would close just as I was walking up them. Since not even a tiny bag of pretzels or nuts is offered to passengers for free anymore, I'm absolutely starving. Maybe I can find a candy machine somewhere? Las Vegas is a fucking dump. And the free airport internet is reaaaaally slow.

Also, my flight to Philadelphia has been delayed to 1 am.

Now that I'm safe and sound at home, and rested, I can relay the most awkward moment of the trip.

I had in my possession a portable blow-up toilet seat, AKA a neck support ring thingy. I had never used it before, but I've also never been able to sleep on a plane before, so I thought it was worth a shot.

As soon as I got on the Las Vegas>Philly plane and took my window seat, I dug it out of my bag and blew it up, tried it on. It was awkward, uncomfortable, and scratched my neck a little. Plus I looked like an injured dog. So I took it off.

A bit later, a husband and wife team sat down beside me. After about 10 minutes, we had not made eye contact or spoken, so in the interest of civility I decided to offer the lady my toilet seat head supporter. She graciously accepted, and then we had a minute of back-and-forth as I made lame jokes about the likelihood of passing out as you blow up the ring, and about how maybe that's how they really are supposed to work. She played with the ring for a minute and then put into her back-of-the-seat pouch.

About an hour into the flight (delayed, so it ended up being 1am-8am or so), it was lights out and everyone was trying to catch some Zs on seats that adjusted from an "L" shape to maybe a 96 degree angle. Apparently everyone else is really good at this skill, but I am not. I was restless and going crazy in the silence. The lady to my left and her husband were fucking KNOCKED OUT - without wearing the ring. I kept looking at the ring I had offered her. Was it worth another shot? But I had clearly given it to her, and said something like "Don't worry, I'll definitely never use it again, it's all yours." At the same time, she was snoring.

So I reached for it and took it back. As I blew it up as quietly as I could, she suddenly woke up. Then her husband woke up. And then there I was, trying to sleep with the ring on, and failing. I'm pretty sure none of the three of us slept again the rest of the night. I kept adjusting and readjusting, and so did she, but I'm pretty sure I heard some quiet talk about how I had the ring. They also may have been talking about my massive B.O., because I hadn't showered in 3 1/2 days by that point.

I have to go on a bike ride now. The rest of the story is about how I struggled with giving it back or keeping it, and also about how it's possible that the lady never even noticed.

haha that sounds like pretty standard air travel except i'd never offer the ring even if i didn't want to use it at that moment because hey, you never know. i HATE being locked in by ppl sleeping. this is why i prefer aisle seats, even though it's easier to sleep if you can lie your head against the window.

does anyone actually enjoy muzak? does it really have the broadest appeal, or is it used more just because people hate it universally? they don't have to worry about offending one certain group when they can just offend everyone at the same time. this will avoid conflict between waiting passengers because people will be united in their disgust.
