I want this day to END goddammit.

Go! Talk bollocks here!

(To be revived every Friday until the end of time)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Post links to good shockwave games here also.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I still have an hour and a quarter to go :(

robster (robster), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god, it's only 11:15 am here! I have timezone envy.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm also stuck here for another hour and don't want to do any "work", so here goes...

EAT SOME PASTE!

Where are you Matt? it's only 10:14 a.m. here.

Huck Me Gently (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

www.candystand.com has good games.

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i have distracting things, but they're all attachments, so i don't think they'd work. and they aren't that interesting anyway.

so just talk about interesting things. what are people doing this weekend?

bah to all you people with friday afternoons and weekends

Ed (dali), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It is still Friday morning here, and I am desperately trying to search to find out if Hotel 17 has towels in their rooms. (They have shared bathrooms so they may not!) Perhaps I can get Stevem to call ahead and find out...

The River Kate (kate), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

OH CRAP well just look at this then:
http://www.geocities.com/Augusta/1660/anralph.gif

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

This weekend I'm doing absolutely nothing, and I can't wait. No gigs, no going out plans. It's like the one weekend for months on either side that I can just lie around, clean, pay bills, do some insurance stuff I've been putting off, etc. Fun, eh?

(have to get through work first though, 6 1/2 hours to go).

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

what a great idea for a thread! I was just trying to think of something to post about and failing cos I've drunk so much coffee that all my thoughts keep falling out of my head. Now I don't have to! I don't have any links to any shockwave games that have not been posted here already I'm afraid.

x-post: I am going to see Elephant at the cinema tonight. Tomorrow I am going to buy a new suit, shirt, tie and shoes then I am moving flat. I will thus be rewarding my moving assitants with beer and curry. Sunday I will be settling in. I am most excited about all of this.

hmmm, Friday, 30 January 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Tonight, I am going out for drinks with my favourite person and her mum (!) who is coming down for the weekend.

Then I am off out for my friend's birthday in the evening, which will involve trawling round several Anna-friendly Soho bars. That's about it for now... could be a quiet one, could be very messy indeed. I have no idea.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

MY FRIDAY HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN.

God, I need coffee

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

How come I seem to be leaving this place with *less* luggage than I arrived with? Or is it cause I'm trying to space out one suitcase worth of stuff into two suitcases?

The River Kate (kate), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm going for a meal and then watching the new sex and the city, then maybe dancing at GAY. tomorrow i'll hopefully learn to knit, then go to dinner and a party with my guy. i can't remember what i'm doing on sunday...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I am now the proud recipient of beer and cake courtesy of my work.

:))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

hmmm, Friday, 30 January 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

This is great...I thought today was Thursday until I read this thread. I was out sick yesterday and spent the entire day thinking it was Wednesday, so I must have lost a day somewhere at the start of the week. I guess I need a calendar.

Yay Friday...

mmmmsalt (Graeme), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm going to see oneida tonight, bbq fap tomorrow as well as a birthday dance party, then hopefully to see "you got served" on sunday. these are the fun things.
unfun things: i need to figure out where i hid my passport when i came back to nyc in october. i also need to do a major clean before i leave as i hate returning from a trip to a disgusting house.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

God, so many BOXES!!! Here is the answer. I ended up putting more stuff into storage at my mum's house than I ended getting out, and now I have hundreds of boxes which I have to stack on top of each other. :-(

The River Kate (kate), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah, my day has just started. Adaml and I mock your aimless angst.

I need to get off the internet and start packing. Or maybe even take the dog for one last walk. Ach, I'm nearly packed and I don't want to move boxes, so one last dogwalk it is. You will probably be down the pub by the time I get back!

The River Kate (kate), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Today I have been given some cloutie dumpling and some marmalade. Everyone in the office is stuffing envelopes for a big mailing, which is the perfect, mindless Friday afternoon job. Tonight is National Pop League and hopefully no slipping on ice and whacking my arse off the pavement. Tomorrow I'm going to sow my sweet peas.

Here's something for the bored: http://www.yook.de/tetris/

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Kingfish Funyun (Kingfish), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Have a great time in NY K!

Hooray I've only got 30 mins to go before I am outta here! I should have got paid today (woo hoo) but someone messed up & we arent getting paid til monday, which kind of messes up my plans to spend, spend, spend this w/e! Ah well. Still am planning to get drunk tonight though! yay!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the message board for senselessy frittering away the long hours of a life less ordinary.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i just put on some nice hand creme and lip balm, that took up 45 seconds. and writing about it took at least another 30...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

45 minutes to go before running the gauntlet of Paddington and taking the first train out to the countryside. I can hardly wait to hear the barrage of monotone PA apologies, excuses and the old favourite "this train has been cancelled due toafault on this train which cannot be rectified."

a shotgun, Friday, 30 January 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The Daily Mail headline thingy has made me spit coffee with laughter.

robster (robster), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish i had this option for senselessly frittering the other day. instead i passed the time by ordering some perfume, overpriced hand cream, and a toaster oven online. wtf? at least i didn't order an ab-wheel.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

My god play this one if you are safe from epileptic fits...

That's beautiful on so many levels.

ow, sarah, my eyes!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope they don't make me stick around any longer here and waste my time. It's Friday goddammit. I can't even check my email thanks to MyDoom.B and there is nothing else for us to do. I want to leave! I need to get on a train to NYC! Aaaargh.

TOMBOT, Friday, 30 January 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I imagine this to be "PLUR"!

Sarah (starry), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Doom.B sounds a bit like....

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I should instead be spending my time trying to catch the author of the MyDoom virus as Microsoft and SCO are each offering a quarter million to whomever nabs him. It's like the old west, except it's snowing and I'm stuck at work and have no idea where to start.

TOMBOT, Friday, 30 January 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha yes Ed I saw that article. It made me hate my job a lot.

TOMBOT, Friday, 30 January 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Try the Ukraine.

x-post

Ed (dali), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! this is when I feel very smug and superior and know that I made the right choice in getting a Powerbook. I was a sys admin when the ILOVEYOU bug struck. I never used Outlook again.

I am still herding cats, but it looks like most of the cats are in corrals now, and I am so excited about the weekend, I get to meet all kinds of ILXors, I get to see my bestest friend in NYC, and I get to see the hott ex-boyfriend (who made a point of telling me about his pageboy haircut! woo!). I just have to remember that I am old and married and boring now (and I think he's married, too, now, or pretty close) and Stevem's hair will get jealous.

The River Kate (kate), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been waiting 2 hours for my boss who is 'en route,' just so he can come tell us to go home. I hate everything.

TOMBOT, Friday, 30 January 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

We got finished with our training at 11:15 and cleaned out the classroom by 11:30. It's now 2pm and nobody can figure out what to do with us. So we wait.

I want to see a human being on fire running around screaming. I mean in person. Not on a screen.

TOMBOT, Friday, 30 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

my perfume just arrived courtesy of ups. it smells like an extremely wealthy middle-aged woman. boo.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 30 January 2004 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

We just got a Fedex shipment of LL Bean goodies. Which my mum tried to give to me. I'M SORRY BUT I REALLY DON'T NEED ANY! MORE! SHOES!!! It was my New Years Resolution to stay out of shoe shops.

The River Kate (kate), Friday, 30 January 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Well bosso finally showed up, determined that there was no good reason for those of us remaining to actually be at work any longer, and I took off for home.

All the trains are sold out until the Express at 5pm, which costs twice as much but what am I complaining for.

TOMBOT, Friday, 30 January 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but express trains make up for being EXPENSIVE by being FAST!!! Rock on.

I just went out for one more souvenier run, picked up Monterey Jack for Suzy and some maple type products for HSA's mum.

101 Dumbest Moments in Business, 2003

TOMBOT, Friday, 30 January 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck fast, I could arrive earlier on a much less expensive train if I had been able to leave work when we got finished instead of waiting around for 2 1/2 hours.

TOMBOT, Friday, 30 January 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Grrr, that is frustrating. Hey, at least you have your choice of trains. Did I mention the fact that there is ONE Greyhound from Bennington to NYC a day?

The River Kate (kate), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No, you didn't. Haha I have so many reasons for hating buses, I'm sorry.

TOMBOT, Friday, 30 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Traffic? This is Vermont. Oh whoops, sorry, we have to stop the bus, there are some cows in the road.

The River Kate (kate), Friday, 30 January 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

::suddenly realises that a bus from New England has to go through the bottleneck of hell that is Connecticut::

I hope they let ya off early M, so's you can kick back and relax a bit.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 15 October 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

You should walk from the bathroom to your door on your knees next time, for giggles.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 15 October 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

OK.
When I got back to the door to my office, I realized I had left my keys in my bag (within the office) so I had to knock on the door until someone let me back in. This would probably be even more embarassing if I were on my knees.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 October 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I am waiting to take my lunch so the second my boss walks back in the dorr so that I don't have to look at his stupid face.

I'd like to eat a fritter right now. An apple one, maybe.

I am still "at work".

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

My sister worked to register voters in Wisconsin and she told me about how W came to speak and had a photo op at some diner place and he ordered two apple fritters, and when they came out they were each like the size of a dinner plate and it was funny because it was our president with TWO GIANT APPLE FRITTERS.

MEN AT WORK WITHOUT HATS.

I have actually done work today, which is unusual, but I am still freaking out about a deadline that is three weeks away.

Of course, starting in about an hour I will be a relaxed musician for the rest of the weekend.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd die for some vegetable fritters from Strelka!
!

planescapin' 'til dawn (Homosexual II), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

TWO GIANT APPLE FRITTERS.

That figures, it was in Wausau. Although it could have been in Janesville.

Some co-workers of mine were in Wausau around the same time doing work in a hospital, and they brought in THE WHITE PHONE, i.e. the hotline to the White House just in case Dubya choked on his fritters.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 November 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen you fritter away
slow as a glacier makes its way down to the Rhine

three months pass...
I'm bored. What is ILE doing at the weekend, then?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Half-hour, 6 hours - what's the difference?

This weekend = Wes Craven werewolves (I think) & medium well cow flesh.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

20 minutes...i've done nothing but listen to dead meadow albums today and my head is spinning.

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

10 minutes to go. I'm off to a birthday party tonight. Woo!

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Six hours to go. This weekend: cleaning the apartment and watching horror movies w/girlfriend (Uzumaki, White Zombie, etc.).

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 25 February 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Going to the theatre tonight, watching some rugby. That's it.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 25 February 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to Hounslow.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 25 February 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

4 hours 5 min. to go: Going out for burgers & beer, then going bowling (which I am horrible at) before my friend moves to Japan for 2 years.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 25 February 2005 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I just senselessly frittered away 20 mins playing online poker staggeringly well, albeit with pretend money. I now have a ridiculously high opinion of my skeelz, which will no doubt result in BIG LAFFS next time I try to play the game for ca$h.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 25 February 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to move this weekend. I am looking forward to it, yet not. It's going to be a lot of work.

I have fritttered away most of the morning already.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 25 February 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had enough of work for this week. I need to find a way to look busy for the next 50 minutes.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 25 February 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Longest 15mins of my life...

I am going to the pub tonight and then DJing later, and watching Spurs bomb out of the FA Cup on Sunday. Apart from that this weekend is a joyously uneventful blank slate full of epic adventures waiting to happen. Yerselves?

N_RQ, Friday, 11 March 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to splice beats for a couple of hours after work, then drop my girlfriend off somewhere so she can get drunk with her co-workers, then meet a friend and his girlfriend and try not to get too drunk myself.

I also have six hours left of work. You bastards.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I may get the dust-off for the computer this pm in order to kill some time at work. Then I'm going home to watch "Ghost World" and attempt to eat some food containing protein.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaah, temping. The time you spend filling in your time sheet and getting it signed is worth about £1.50 I think.

I've filled in the timesheet, am talking to you guys, waiting for one of my best friends to ring so I can find out if she's in London yet and wondering when my mother's gonna drag me to Marleybone to pick up sis and if she's coming back before 10 or 11 so I can go to Club Seal after all (doubt it, sadly, she'z off to the ballet, which does inspire envy).

I get my own login next week. Looks like the chain they put at my desk is here to stay.

BARMS, Friday, 11 March 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Poker this weekend, anyone?

(myabe I should revive that thread instead)

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It will technically be afternoon in two minutes

My timesheet is so complicated that I literally fill in 30min of admin overhead each week for it. It's an Extensity product that runs in yr web browser, and launches some bizarre external java app, you can't put in job numbers directly but rather have to "search" for them, even though you know what they are already..

looks like i've started 2 min early

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't that what people talk about in their last frittering hour of work? how much they are going to guzzle in the pm?

maybe it's just me.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm having "cocktails" at someone's design-firm party thing. This means I'll get drunk and proclaim everything in sight as "butt ass ugly as fuck." Cheers.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 18 March 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

By sheer coincidence, I've just made the same decision! Woohoo!

(today has been crap, crap, crap so far - if I just sit at my desk and surf the web all afternoon I might just regain my sanity)

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 18 March 2005 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi! I've basically decided to do bugger all work this afternoon and not feel guilty about it. Entertain me plz!
I have been doing this all week, so now I really, REALLY do have a load of work that needs to be done. :-( (As you can see I am being conscientious & getting on with it!) *sigh*

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Friday, 18 March 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It's so nice out there. Haven't sat outside at Zilli cafe since last summer so it felt good today. Now I need to do some work with a belly full of pasta.

Hehe Beanz, if you were out there at 1.15 I probably walked past you!

I just got an email with the word "sub-committee" in it. Back to slacking, I think. Really I want to play online poker, but there's no way I could get away with it.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 18 March 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

You probably did then! I wouldn't have seen you though, cos the sun was in my eyes. I still feel a bit squinty.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 18 March 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm anxiously listening to the Gold Cup (more for workmates who have placed bets tahn myself, who hasn't) in the last half hour or so. I've also just discovered Diamond Mine on Yahoo Games, so that'll keep me entertained for a bit.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 18 March 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

American Idol on itv2 tonight, woo. Pub vs Idol... hmm.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 18 March 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Bah, as soon as I last posted my phone rang: "there's a nasty problem with one of the servers". Of course there is. It's a Friday afternoon, so *something* has to go horribly wrong.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 18 March 2005 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Que, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

^yes to that.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

Handy, that.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

oh you can't do that! after work naps are DEADLY. you have to set an alarm for like, twenty minutes later.

elmo argonaut, Friday, 25 May 2007 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

Once in the pub we were coming up with rude names for cheeses, along the "brie = wee hahaha" line of things. "Primula" turned into "Quimula", and shall we just say that something in my head stopped working that day. I was never going to try it ANYWAY but now I staunchy believe it must be destroyed.

Perhaps you could also play the "rude names and cheeses" game! Or are we just happy naming things we've never eaten?

I am trying to think of a fruit I've never eaten. Does DURIAN count as a fruit?! I don't think I *want* to try it...

Sarah, Friday, 25 May 2007 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

Perhaps the game is no good when you are sober.

Sarah, Friday, 25 May 2007 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

I know I'm not. And I have to be sober for the next two weeks!

Sarah, Friday, 25 May 2007 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

Hello. I think I've barely posted on this thread since started it. I am ILL and therefore SULKING at the possibility of continuing to be so all weekend. I am also drinking red wine in the office and hoping it has medicinal effects.

Matt DC, Friday, 25 May 2007 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

Do you have really bad headaches Matt? Cos that is how it started with me and I was off for three days in a bit of a mess (hott and feverish for at least 2 of them).

I haven't drunk any of the booze in my house for ages, and now I *can't* I think I might actually have to hide the ginger wine (it is calling to me).

I HATE MY JOB. Why do assholes suddenly need urgent shit shipped after 4pm on a friday when the couriers no longer collect? ITS BEEN QUIET ALL WEEK.

So stressed.

Trayce, Friday, 22 June 2007 06:26 (eighteen years ago)

some snippets from the college I went to's facebook group:

1. Topic: What are chicks good for?

Not much, but still more useful than rogan.

Cleaning, blowjobs, massage, admin work, cleaning my toenails, sex, driving me around, having babies so i can make my own rugby team, washing laundry, sympathy when i trip over when drunk

Heres more! Marketing, but not finance, PR but not HR, nursing but not med, company sectetary but not CEO. Ha.

Drooone, Friday, 22 June 2007 06:28 (eighteen years ago)

2.

what night do you boys play rugby? friday? i'm coming into town for a whirlwind tour before heading back to aspen. wouldnt mind catching up.

yeah hoops. friday night games... i've been meaning to put our games up as "events", but just been a slack cunt. i'll keep it updated. catch ya soon mate

Don't be a pussy hoops slap some boots on!

mate, i've gotta keep this face pretty for all those aspen sugar mummas!

Touche - i've only got fat english slappers here

Drooone, Friday, 22 June 2007 06:28 (eighteen years ago)

3. Topic: rogan is a bell end...

it told me to start a discussion point... i figured this was as good a point as any to throw it off....

I Would agree with this entirely. That bugger still going to O Week events and informals. Last time i checked he had a girlfriend, wonder if shes figured him out yet?

if the relationship has been any less then 5 years she still might not know what end to talk to

Drooone, Friday, 29 June 2007 06:44 (eighteen years ago)

Trayce, Friday, 6 July 2007 06:16 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know. the ones I'd be fairly sure about would be Japan, Indonesia, China.
Korea and Saudi Arabia are both pretty decent aren't they?

I don't really know much. at all.

Drooone, Friday, 6 July 2007 06:17 (eighteen years ago)

Sounds good to me, I'll take 'em. Beggars that have NFI can't be choosers with 11 minutes to get the tips in.
No drinking for hours yet, have to drive 200 odd km first. But then I will be partaking in:

Thailand v Iraq
Viet Nam v UAE
Japan v Qatar
Indonesia v Bahrain
Malaysia v China
Iran v Uzbekistan
Korea v Saudi Arabia
Oman v Thailand
Qatar v Viet Nam

I think. The Korea match depends on which Korea. South then them, North then Saudi.

kv_nol, Friday, 6 July 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, HLA, how did those tips end up with teh Asian cup??

Drooone, Friday, 13 July 2007 04:34 (eighteen years ago)

I ended up 2 from 10, but that was thanks to all the draws. It's 2 more than what I would have got if I had picked them myself. It didn't help that I missed picking the Iran v Uzbekistan game altogether and submitted it as "Soccer Game 7". I am just about to put in this week's tips, so I will take the kindly suggestions from the mongrel thread.

Hard like armour, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:00 (eighteen years ago)

Whoa, that sucks. ;_;

Maybe put every game as a draw.

Drooone, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

I think they've barred that option this year because lots of people did that last year with the World Cup. So I would say everyone else went shithouse in the first round too.

Hard like armour, Friday, 13 July 2007 05:04 (eighteen years ago)

cool.

I'm going to have a slow weekend I think avoid b00ze. I might try and work out this nu camera I've got. I have no real idea about it yet, except for pointin' & shootin'.

Also, I've been talking up climbing Mount Warning again for ages, could hit that, round some dueds up.

I already wanna go home though hot damn, the only thing keeping me here today is the free "xmas in july" lunch we're about to have in half an hour. If it turns out to be cold ham and salads, I will kill someone with my bare hands (and possibly eat them).

Trayce, Friday, 27 July 2007 02:02 (eighteen years ago)

brilliant. from URB's review of Caribou's Andorra:

"he chose the new name while hung out on LSD, apparently, and Andorra’s vibe suggests Snaith has been in the sky with diamonds in recent months, too."

Drooone, Friday, 27 July 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

Urb was the magazine the dude in that thread was from btw.

It looks a fine publication.

Drooone, Friday, 27 July 2007 02:38 (eighteen years ago)

Hey Droone,
Did you end up climbing Mt Warning the other weekend? I take you must reside somewhere in it's vicinity if you were thinking of climbing it?

Forgot My Pencil, Friday, 27 July 2007 02:54 (eighteen years ago)

hey yep I'm @ tweeed heads. And no, super low fitness level ruled me out of the climb. And lack of co-conspirators.

Drooone, Friday, 27 July 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure YachtMan With Two Abs would have been up for it. Did you ask him? I hear you on the fitness though...pretty hill but hiking is a bit too much hard work

Forgot My Pencil, Friday, 27 July 2007 03:15 (eighteen years ago)

shhhiiiiiiiiiit. I was all set for an afternoon of bludging. But now I has a meeting at 4. ):):

But I am drinckin tonight. :):)

Drooone, Friday, 27 July 2007 05:22 (eighteen years ago)

blueski, Friday, 27 July 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

LONDON (Reuters) - Businesses are losing more than 50 million pounds a year because of employees leaving work early on Friday, according to a survey published on Friday.

The top excuses for starting the weekend early are a long lunch, doctor's appointment and an out-of-office meeting near to home.

"Our evidence suggests that more and more workers are seeing Friday afternoon as an unofficial holiday," said Pam Rogerson, head of personnel at Employersafe.

"We have estimated that this is costing British business just over 50 million pounds a year, which all goes to form part of the overall 13 billion pound cost of workplace absenteeism."

The company has developed a software system which detects patterns of absence and recommends appropriate disciplinary action.

Employersafe also said the "Friday Feeling" trend has been reinforced by motoring organisations which report that the Friday rush hour now starts around noon.

Research by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) suggested earlier this year that managers believe one in eight of all workplace absences are due to staff faking illness - and the favourite days to do so are Fridays or Mondays.

Mark C, Friday, 3 August 2007 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

Your not going to get many replies to this, Mark - everyone's buggered off home.

Guilty_Boksen, Friday, 3 August 2007 12:54 (eighteen years ago)

Long (ie all afternoon) lunches used to be positively encouraged in my office but that era is kind of over now.

Matt DC, Friday, 3 August 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

I have spent SOO much money on baking stuff!

2 x deep sandwich tins!
2 x packs silicone muffin cases in multicolours!
1 x pink! silicone spatula!
1 x "Good Housekeeping" deep cake/muffin tray!
oh and...
1 x pack of freezer bags which is arguably less exciting :)

YAY! Tonight is going to be ginger and lemon sponge night! I will bring Elaine Paige the laptop into the kitchen and watch JEKYLL whilst I whisk. Thankfully I have got over fear of flour going all over the keys by now! Mwahaha. So impressed with the muffin cases! They are not only good for baking but for seperating out food in my lunchbox!

Easily impressed, yes yes.

MDC - I so hear you!

Sarah, Friday, 3 August 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

POETS DAY

ledge, Friday, 3 August 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

You've called your laptop 'Elaine Paige'?

braveclub, Friday, 3 August 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

Well I am hardly going to call her Barbara Dickson!

(An explanation for this is that I was watching Harry Hill whilst I was setting it up)

Sarah, Friday, 3 August 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

I think you lot should all find cake recipes that you want to make but can't be bothered etc, and then I will make a big list of them, and I shall make them!

Then you can come over to my house and eat them if you want. We are soon to have a big telly! I am so excited! It is 32" widescreen! My current telly is the one I've had since I wz 15 or so and is about 7" I imagine (the INDIE TELLY). Still don't know whether I can bear to get rid of it. It is covered in Smash Hits! stickers...

Sarah, Friday, 3 August 2007 13:05 (eighteen years ago)

Wow Sarah! Such baking treats! I too am baking this weekend, but am undecided as to what...

Also, i'm drinking tonight. And we found a new place :D
not moving in for a few weeks though.

W4LTER, Friday, 7 September 2007 06:39 (eighteen years ago)

wau, i'm listening to this new band of horsies album at work, it's a bit terrible..

W4LTER, Friday, 7 September 2007 06:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'm in Melbourne, and in 30 seconds I'm outta here!

badg, Friday, 7 September 2007 06:58 (eighteen years ago)

4 hours and 36 minutes.

Help me.

luna, Friday, 7 September 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

hour and three minutes. Close enough.

Oilyrags, Friday, 7 September 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

Do you guys know what? Hey, hey, guess what. My chemistry class is never going to fucking start. Not for a half a man hour. THAT IS A LONG TIME ON A FRIDAY MY FRIENDS. I could be at home with a vodka tonic or totally walking my dog. I KNOW ABOUT PHASES OF MATTER DO NOT WNAT ATTEND 96 TEARS.

Abbott, Friday, 7 September 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

I...

Want...

STEW.

Abbott, Friday, 7 September 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

It is 2:55. In 17 years, it will be 4:00.

Oilyrags, Friday, 21 September 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

in 17 years i will drink beer

carne asada, Friday, 21 September 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

So, God willing, will I.

Michael White, Friday, 21 September 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

That is certainly on the agenda for me.

Oilyrags, Friday, 21 September 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm, end of work. (Actually tomorrow and Sunday night are the party days, tonight is chilling and seeing if a storm actually DOES come.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 September 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

oh noes! storm watch in Socal

carne asada, Friday, 21 September 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

A WHOLE QUARTER INCH OF RAIN!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 September 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

it must be ALL over the news

carne asada, Friday, 21 September 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

There are few things I can imagine less wishing to do than drive in LA again when it's raining.

Michael White, Friday, 21 September 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

8 or 9 hours until I see Bonde Do Role!

KitCat, Friday, 21 September 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

I KNOW ABOUT PHASES OF MATTER DO NOT WNAT ATTEND 96 TEARS.

Is it ok with you if I start saying '96 tears' when something is poopy? I like it.

You know, the original title was "69 Tears," but the record company made them change it.

kenan, Friday, 21 September 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

Did not know that

KitCat, Friday, 21 September 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

Come on! Let's FRITTER!
http://www.hungrymag.com/wp-content/images/fritter1.jpg

KitCat, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

GOT TO GO MAKE THE DO-NUTS.

:(

Abbott, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

I would say that whenever I had to go make the donuts at my donut-making job. I would say that in a Lenny from "Of Mice & Men" voice.

Little bits that fall off the fritter in the fryer and then go through the glaze = nomnomnom. They should just sell those, little baby fritter meteorites.

Abbott, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

I find food photography to be one of the least appetizing things on the PLANET, I just thought I'd mention. Whenever I see "food photography" it makes me NOT want to eat, and not in the "it's so pretty I can't eat it" way, but in the "it's shiny and sticky like a placenta" way.

Will M., Friday, 21 September 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

That fritter isn't so gross though.

KitCat, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i like the fritter. I hold nothing against the fritter.

kenan, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

Why couldn't I have had a donut-making job instead of, say, my first job at a steakhouse?

KitCat, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

The best free food job I ever had though was working at this artsy little movie theater, because I'm a popcorn addict.

KitCat, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

But Will M, that's exactly why breaded placenta is so easy.

Michael White, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

I learned from Zillions, Consumer Reports for Kids, that the milk in photos of cereal is usually Elmer's glue. God, Zillions was my fave magazine as a kid, but I was one smug little priss constantly reciting its factoids. It was like being a prepubescent Adbusters douchebag.

Abbott, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

Milk always looks gross.

KitCat, Friday, 21 September 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

i have bad heartburn. yeeuch.

darraghmac, Friday, 5 October 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

Oh rats, now I want a pastry. Preferably an apple fritter.

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

Getting an early start I see!

Jesse, Friday, 5 October 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

darraghmac, Friday, 5 October 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

Oh. I have 6 hours.

Jesse, Friday, 5 October 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

darraghmac, Friday, 5 October 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

It's 4:00 somewhere!

Jesse, Friday, 5 October 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

darraghmac, Friday, 5 October 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

i'm supposed to go to after work dinner/drinks with people here. dreading it!

carne asada, Friday, 5 October 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Politics of Post-Work Drinks

darraghmac, Friday, 5 October 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

carne asada, Friday, 5 October 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

Hello all!

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

I tried to get a fritter, but everywhere around work only has faux-French pastries, like five kinds of croissant, but NO cake doughtnuts, no fritters, no bearclaws, no coffee cake. THE TERRORISTS ARE WINNING, WHAR IS THE AMERICAN BAKED GOOD??

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

I don't eat croissants except when walking, due to crumbs.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

Hi!
My toe is sore.

I got quite drunk last night and accidentally smashed my foot into my flatemate's underwater camera box type thing, my middle toe hurts so much right now. And i don't kno whether I fucked the box thing or not :/
And I am bored.

W4LTER, Friday, 12 October 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

But the Defence Department researchers are experimenting with putting computer chips into moth pupae - the intermediate stage between a caterpillar and a flying adult - and hatching them into healthy "cyborg moths".

&^%^%#%$#$%# so many levels of fucked up.

Trayce, Friday, 12 October 2007 04:38 (eighteen years ago)

if you're bored, play this

kingfish, Friday, 12 October 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

W4LTER, Friday, 12 October 2007 04:48 (eighteen years ago)

I want it to end and I'm not even there yet.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 October 2007 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

It is just on 3pm here and I am distracted to the shit with everything else I want to do this weekend. Its the ex's birthday party tomorrow so I just want to go home and make cakes and roast eggplant and alcoholic jelly shots... and I just want to get drunk and talk to my current crush who is probably going to end up being bf shortly shhhh dont tell anyone.

Trayce, Friday, 12 October 2007 04:56 (eighteen years ago)

W4LTER, Friday, 12 October 2007 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

W4LTER, Friday, 12 October 2007 06:35 (eighteen years ago)

Trayce, Friday, 12 October 2007 06:37 (eighteen years ago)

On Wednesday my car got hailed when I was work, then that night it got hailed on again. I didn't notice any damage tho.

W4LTER, Friday, 12 October 2007 06:38 (eighteen years ago)

excuse me, how is "cyborg moths" ever possibly a bad thing?

kingfish, Friday, 12 October 2007 06:40 (eighteen years ago)

W4LTER, Friday, 12 October 2007 06:43 (eighteen years ago)

I fear The Fluttering.

Trayce, Friday, 12 October 2007 06:52 (eighteen years ago)

no-one's gonna know if i do anymore work or not for the next 1/2 hour but i seem to have run out of effortless entertainment sources. to work or not to work?

Upt0eleven, Friday, 7 December 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

Aren't you the guy who wanted a reference :)

Mark C, Friday, 7 December 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

i do indeed recognize the irony. (but shush, as far as anyone knows i'm both diligent and efficient)

i just don't like to start something if i can't finish it and having just made it too the end of a task anything I start now would take me longer than i have left in the day to complete.

p.s. did my employer ever contact you asking for one?

Upt0eleven, Friday, 7 December 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

Someone did. I was fulsome, possibly over the top, in my praise.

Mark C, Friday, 7 December 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

Dr Morbius, Friday, 21 December 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

Today work has consisted of making a 3rd cup of coffee, taking a shower at 10:30 and putting my feet up on my desk. Exhausting.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 21 December 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

A few last little things on my end but otherwise I'm easing out gently. As it should be. My final hour at the desk will be a total snooze.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 December 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

spent today playing poker with guy who's retiring after 40 years service. he cleaned me the fuck out, thirty bucks i won't see again. he twinkled the whole time, it was a pleasure. lunch after that, then we had a raffle from which everyone in office got at least three items (i got a bottle of german clear strong drink, will report later, a hip flask that's hellah cool and a box of sweets). in at ten, home at three.

Oilyrags, Friday, 4 April 2008 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

Hurting 2, Friday, 4 April 2008 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

i need my fucking server working or i should just go home.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 4 April 2008 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

i feel kind of wacky right now. maybe blood sugar is low. i need to spend my last hour trying to find a snack.

carne asada, Friday, 4 April 2008 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

frittering time w/ snacks VS. snacking time w/ fritters

elmo argonaut, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

I am going to eat a slice of pizza from *Capone's* when I get out of here.

Hurting 2, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

new england clam cakes are fritters, i guess? you should eat those because they are the doughnuts of the sea

elmo argonaut, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

ideally they should come in a white paper bag that is translucent from alla grease

elmo argonaut, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

omg hungry

elmo argonaut, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

I made do with a bagga doritos and a bottla coke.

$2.35!

Oilyrags, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

i have apples and lupine beans on hand. FIBROUS.

elmo argonaut, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

> lupine beans

AWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Oilyrags, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

i already ate some kidney beans (in veggie chili) and green beans (w/ feta & lemon, nom nom) at lunch. if i eat the lupine beans it will make for a beany trifecta and i do not know if that is wise.

elmo argonaut, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

in fact, i know it to be unwise.

elmo argonaut, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

AWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPFFFFFFFFFFT!

Oilyrags, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

eating them anyway.

elmo argonaut, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

I had a Starbucks veggie crunchwrap for lunch today. The bounty of NJ highwayland.

Hurting 2, Friday, 4 April 2008 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

I've been at work for 24 minutes. Is it too early to bump this thread?

Upt0eleven, Friday, 18 April 2008 08:57 (eighteen years ago)

I've been here for two minutes, so certainly not.

Øystein, Friday, 18 April 2008 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

Screw this, I'm going out again to buy myself a sugarbomb bun and a cuppa hot chocolate. Being an adult is brilliant!

Øystein, Friday, 18 April 2008 09:17 (eighteen years ago)

It's not bad. Also not bad is the fact that no-one here seems to be interested in what work I'm doing, or if i'm doing any at all. They've introduced performance-based bonuses to my package but they're not as motivating as one might expect. I start looking for a new job tomorrow now.

Upt0eleven, Friday, 18 April 2008 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

What is the job, Nick?

Mark C, Friday, 18 April 2008 10:41 (eighteen years ago)

The one I'm doing? It's internet marketing, of a kind. I've learned quite a lot and gained some valuable SEO experience but it was never the ideal job and when I took it 6 months ago I was in no position to be choosy - debts to sort out, rent to pay and no other offers on the table. I don't have those hanging over me anymore.

I've been here six months, which seems to be just about long enough, and the whole thing is seriously grating at this point. The commute is too long and too expensive, the work is beyond tedious and not as well paid as an equivalent position nearer to home, my colleagues, although not bad people, drive me round the bend on a daily basis.

I'm gonna contact the company that very nearly employed me before but decided to go for someone with more web 2.0 experience - which I now have - before I start properly shopping around.

I know work is work and I shouldn't be so moany but I'm not looking for a dream job - just a marginal improvement.

Upt0eleven, Friday, 18 April 2008 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

only 40 minutes left. SAVE ME!

Oilyrags, Friday, 9 May 2008 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

Dude what the hell time is it there? It is 1:51 p.m. here. Texas. Oh god.

Abbott, Friday, 9 May 2008 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

It's 3pm. But I come in at seven and 'work' til 3:30 with a half hour lunch, so 3:30 makes eight hours.

Oilyrags, Friday, 9 May 2008 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

only 40 minutes left. SAVE ME!

Uh, why should I? If it were 8 AM then maybe...

stevienixed, Friday, 9 May 2008 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, so you'd save the guy on the shore who hasn't gone swimming yet, but the dude who's almost drowned already get's a 'why should I?'?

Thanks a LOT.

Oilyrags, Friday, 9 May 2008 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

I CAN FEEL IT

I need to get my SNES back from the buddies' house so I can contine my Mario 2 action.

B.L.A.M., Friday, 9 May 2008 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yikes, I read that as "my bosses need to stop beating each other off."

BigLurks, Friday, 9 May 2008 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

got some beerz for the train ride home!

carne asada, Friday, 23 May 2008 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

It's not afternoon here just but I've already mentally checked out. Ho hum. SO BORED!

ENBB, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

Last day at this temp assignment. Day after my birthday and mildly hung over on scotch.

Yeah, I'm gonna be REAL productive.

Oilyrags, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

Your birthday was yesterday?? Happy birthday!

ENBB, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. I am 39, now. Only 364 days left to delude myself that I'm not REALLY middle-aged.

Oilyrags, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Is 40 still considered middle-aged?

ENBB, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, it's considered genuinely old now, is it?

Oilyrags, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Hey - you know what I meant!!

ENBB, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

haha, yeah, I just can't help but kick the shit out of myself.

Oilyrags, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

Alright, here's the question of the day:

I can think of nothing more enticing for me today than buying a 22 oz beer, putting it in some opaque container, and having it as a road soda on the way home. Mind you, I live in LA, have a 22 mile drive to get home, and it will be Friday afternoon traffic.

Seriously - one beer. Not three or five, but one.

Should I do this - yes or no?

B.L.A.M., Friday, 30 May 2008 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

nah just have five and then get a taxi home.

ken c, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

That would be more expensive than flying from LAX to Burbank!

B.L.A.M., Friday, 30 May 2008 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

oh in that case do that!!

ken c, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

1 oz. per mile sounds auspicious

elmo argonaut, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

How about riding dirty with an open container of alkeehawl?

B.L.A.M., Friday, 30 May 2008 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

B.L.A.M., is there any reason you might have for getting pulled over? Tail light out? Expired registration, etc?

Michael White, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

How much time does it actually take to get home?

Bimble, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know - it sounds risky to me even though you'd probably be fine. I've always been very cautious with drinking and driving stuff.

So, if I type what's in my head it comes out more like.

I still feel kinda dumb and doubt I'll ever pass the exam but I have more confidence than when I was 18. Then I KNEW I was too dumb to drive a car. Now I am delusional and think I have a shot. heh

stevienixed, Friday, 22 August 2008 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

I think with manual transmission cars, the goal is to make sure that
(a) there is power going to the wheels at all times
or
(b) you are out of gear

The longer you have the clutch engaged, the worse you are driving. Seriously.

Damnit, I want to go home, but I find the stuff I just got assigned REALLY interesting.

I think we've finally reached that point of the year where it's technically always a Friday afternoon at work. Soooooo many other things I could be doing right now if I didn't have to pretend to be "working" (i.e. stretching 1.5 hours of work to fit the contours of an eight-hour work day).

Not if you peace out right now!

I didn’t know they had American Labor Day in Canada.

faculty w1fe (silby), Friday, 31 August 2018 22:07 (seven years ago)

historically they're linked and not just in the canada apes the u.s. style

wikipedia:

Labour Day (French: Fête du Travail) has been celebrated in Canada on the first Monday in September since the 1880s. The origins of Labour Day in Canada can be traced back to December 1872 when a parade was staged in support of the Toronto Typographical Union's strike for a 58-hour work-week,[7] almost a full decade before a similar event in New York City by the American Knights of Labor, a late 19th-century U.S. labor federation, launched the movement towards the American Labor Day holiday.[8] The Toronto Trades Assembly (TTA) called its 27 unions to demonstrate in support of the Typographical Union who had been on strike since 25 March.[7] George Brown, Canadian politician and editor of the Toronto Globe hit back at his striking employees, pressing police to charge the Typographical Union with "conspiracy."[7] Although the laws criminalising union activity were outdated and had already been abolished in Great Britain, they were still on the books in Canada and police arrested 24 leaders of the Typographical Union. Labour leaders decided to call another similar demonstration on 3 September to protest the arrests. Seven unions marched in Ottawa, prompting a promise by Canadian Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald to repeal the "barbarous" anti-union laws.[7] Parliament passed the Trade Union Act on 14 June the following year, and soon all unions were seeking a 54-hour work-week.

The Toronto Trades and Labour Council (successor to the TTA) held similar celebrations every spring. American Peter J. McGuire, co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was asked to speak at a labour festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on 22 July 1882. Returning to the United States, McGuire and the Knights of Labor organised a similar parade based on the Canadian event on 5 September 1882 in New York City, USA. On 23 July 1894, Canadian Prime Minister John Thompson and his government made Labour Day, to be held in September, an official holiday. In the United States, the New York parade became an annual event that year, and in 1894 was adopted by American president Grover Cleveland to compete with International Workers' Day (May Day).

Speaking of 'fritter': I think if you were to monitor the number of times food is mentioned across an eight-hour stretch of Food Network programming, my workplace might honestly give them a run for their money. I'm working tomorrow but I get to leave at midday.

We had one of those insane “please don’t reply all” clusters that I thought were a thing of the past earlier in the afternoon, hundreds of emails, people leaning hard into absurdism and jokes and philosophy, which elicited ferocious laughter from everyone

Clever Message Board User Name (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 23 December 2025 20:15 (five months ago)

love a good old fashioned reply all nightmare. absurdism the only called-for response to mandated bullshit 40 hours a week tbh.

map, Tuesday, 23 December 2025 20:19 (five months ago)

We had one of those a few years ago, which escalated to include things like 'ransom note' GIFs, until a senior manager cut in with the message 'Please let's put a stop to this now. It's not professional/'

Got a rad bombshell from our CEO today... we all get two paid days off each month next year, which doesn't come out of PTO. They don't accrue, use 'em or lose 'em.. I'll definitely be using them. Hiking mondays twice a month!

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 23 December 2025 20:27 (five months ago)

what kinda psycho wouldn't use them.

map, Tuesday, 23 December 2025 20:28 (five months ago)

That’s fantastic!

We found the one good CEO.

I am frittering away two hours before happy hour with friends in town -- Festivus, they call it.

Well the full thing is that we're struggling and can't afford pay raises! but it's a nonprofit, so that's par for the course.. but a couple free days a month is better than a poke in the eye
