Queen for 19,635 days, or so.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 10 November 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

I rather enjoyed that footage of her looking back after being shot at that they showed last night. I mean, it was dramatic, not that I want her to be shot or anything.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 11 November 2005 08:00 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't mind.

Happy Birthday, the Queen!

Henrietta Leavitt and the Cepheid Variables (kate), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:01 (twenty years ago)

Windsor walkabout live on BBC website right about now.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:05 (twenty years ago)

Shit, not till 12.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:06 (twenty years ago)

The Royal Standard being raised over Windsor Castle was introduced this morning as "BREAKING NEWS", followed by some old dears from Tunbridge Wells who'd left home at 4a.m. to make sure they got good flag waving seats saying things like "ooh she's lovely" and "we love the queen" followed by speculation about whether the weather would hold or not. I felt rather unpatriotic for eating Kellogs Fruit & Fibre on such a British morning.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:08 (twenty years ago)

Drop dead you old bag!

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:09 (twenty years ago)

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:10 (twenty years ago)

Because at least he's got a friggin' personality

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:11 (twenty years ago)

> followed by some old dears from Tunbridge Wells who'd left home at 4a.m.

i guess those were the only two people on the seats outside the castle on Breakfast this morning...

(i did wonder about the security of windsor castle this morning when i saw it - there's nothing but a lawn between the road and the castle. then i realised IT'S A CASTLE, how much more secure do you get?)

in 20 years will she send herself a telegram? that would be odd.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:14 (twenty years ago)

in 20 years will she send herself a telegram? that would be odd.

A footman will bring it on a silver platter and she'll say, "Oh, how delightful, one has received a telegram from one"

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:17 (twenty years ago)

she must be a nightmare to buy presents for

mark s (mark s), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Tabloid yesterday, front cover was a picture of the queen and headline "1 OUT OF 5 ASYLUM SEEKERS HEAD TO BRITAIN"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:26 (twenty years ago)

I remember a few years back they interviewed asylum seekers and asked them what the one person they associated the UK with was. The queen came fourth I think, behind Thatcher, the Spice Girls, and Mr Bean.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:29 (twenty years ago)

How are dadaismus and onimo being kept off the booze long enough to post on this thread?

I want her to go on being queen FOREVER!!! I mean, even as her body breaks down, they should replace it with cybernetic parts, until we have a ROBOT QUEEN.

Henrietta Leavitt and the Cepheid Variables (kate), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:43 (twenty years ago)

robotic 12-ft-lizard queen

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:53 (twenty years ago)

Excuse my rudery

but stuff the jubilee!
Princess A to Princess Bea
and all their work for charity
Every royal lion' s head
on every boiled and frying egg
And every sodding polo team
in Hello ! bloody magazine

And if you feel this story lacks
the royal seal on candle wax
Reel to reels of scuzzy facts
of dodgy deal and income tax
String me up from Traitor's Gate
stick my head upon a stake
And if you feel this story sucks
that's probably becauae I made it up
I didn' t really hitch a lift
to Windsor Castle bearing gifts
And I can prove it wasn' t me
I was on a stage in Germany
I'vealways loved the Oueenie Mum
her daughters and her daughter' s sons
From Princess A to Princess Bea
And all the Royal Family

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 21 April 2006 10:40 (twenty years ago)

i've decided that actually i'm not that keen for the queen to die. i couldn't bear the three-week orgy of 'mourning' the nation would be forced to endure, i think she should time it so that when she does die it should coincide with, i dunno, the world cup or something so that it gets overshadowed completely.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 21 April 2006 10:45 (twenty years ago)

Another of the headlines on the papers was about how she definitely would not abdicate, which surprised me because I didn't even know it was being talked about, the last I heard (IE 5 years ago) it was more likely that Chazzer would abdicate in favour of William, tho this was back when the popular view of Camilla was 'horse-faced hag' rather than 'national treasure'.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 21 April 2006 10:48 (twenty years ago)

the whole family shd abdicate in favour of esteban buttez

mark s (mark s), Friday, 21 April 2006 10:51 (twenty years ago)

The old Queen Mum seemed to keep her marbles about her so there's not much chance for Charlie that his maw will be forced to abdicate on the grounds of doolalliness

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 10:53 (twenty years ago)

what on earth are you basing yr marbles claim on dada!?

mark s (mark s), Friday, 21 April 2006 10:56 (twenty years ago)

They played the National Anthem after the 8 o'clock pips on the radio this morning as I was driving to work, and I did fleetingly think I should stop the car somewhere so I could stand up.

C J (C J), Friday, 21 April 2006 11:08 (twenty years ago)

... well you shouldn't really be drink driving you know

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Koogy, the bit by the lawn is squaddies' quarters, so they would bear the brunt of anything untoward. Clever really. The rest of it is fairly impregnable.

What's more, there are loads of CCTV cameras.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 21 April 2006 11:39 (twenty years ago)

i think she should time it so that when she does die it should coincide with, i dunno, the world cup or something so that it gets overshadowed completely.

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 11:51 (twenty years ago)

not this world cup though because of wimbledon! nothing can be allowed to interrupt wimbledon.

maybe when i'm on holiday somewhere.

seriously though how awful and never-ending will the media coverage of queendeath be?!

Since when has being sane been a qualification for kinging an queening?

Ed (dali), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:15 (twenty years ago)

haha i only just worked out the perspective -- those are floorboards not fencing! floorboards -- i tht charles's hat was in mid air above his bum and everyone wz jumping!

do you think the chop has already happened? the neck seems to be a gap yet his head is not fallen

mark s (mark s), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:17 (twenty years ago)

I thought the guy on the right was doing a wee bit of magic trickery and making the hat float

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:20 (twenty years ago)

the chop has happened but the shock of killing the monarch has meant that TIME ITSELF has come to a standstill!

i don't know why his hat is all the way down there though, maybe it caught on a gust of wind?

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:23 (twenty years ago)

i mourn the decline of music hall

mark s (mark s), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:24 (twenty years ago)

King: "Where do I put my hat?"
Executioner: "Oh anywhere will do...no need to stand on ceremony here!"

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:26 (twenty years ago)

i think the non-axe fellow is frisbeeing the hat so that it will land on the head when it comes to rest

mark s (mark s), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:30 (twenty years ago)

At first I thought the spectators were severed heads on spikes on a shelf.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:43 (twenty years ago)

It is decking.

King has just propelled his head off his shoulders by internal combustion to deny chopper his pleasure.

Hovering hat remains a mystery though.

How come everyone else has got choppers? Did they just pick someone out of the crowd?

That bloke holding the axe, he might be from my home village.

I think Richard Brandon was from London but there are some who say it was an Irishman from Galway named Gunning who did it.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Then there's the two blokes who wrote a book about my village, who say it was someone called George Joyce - "Cornet" George Joyce. I can find no evidence to back up their claims though. Nevertheless, it is a belief I cling to.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:58 (twenty years ago)

i think joyce let the troops who arrested charles when the king broke his promise to cromwell (about not kickstarting the civil war)

wasn't he also a leading leveller at the confrontation at putney? if so he wasn't really "in" with the top brass, bein a bit of a rank-and-file radical as regards democracy and stuff

mark s (mark s), Friday, 21 April 2006 13:05 (twenty years ago)

I don't know :-(

Legend has it he dressed up as a lady when he got home post-restoration to escape the attentions of rampaging royalists, but one of them murdered him anyway, across the fields.

You can see why I'm so keen to believe this. It is proper ITV teatime stuff.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 21 April 2006 13:10 (twenty years ago)

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

the issue of the queen's potential longevity came up in conversation yesterday. I wondereif she lived to be 120 or whatever then entered a permanent vegetative state and was being kept alivish on a life-support machine, whose decision would it be whether or not to switch the thing off? Would it require an act of parliament?

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 22 April 2006 10:33 (twenty years ago)

As the procession reached the corner outside Barclays, the Welsh Guards played a version of Procul Harum's Whiter Shade of Pale and Iris began to pack up. The handover of her flowers to the Queen had taken approximately two seconds. Was it worth it? "Oh yes," she said. "It wouldn't have been fair to keep her. And there'll be other opportunities. Just think, only another seven years and it's the diamond jubilee!"

Whiter Shade of Pale? wtf? Is The Guardian being funny here?

caek (caek), Saturday, 22 April 2006 11:17 (twenty years ago)

I think it was just that the writer was ignorant of the tune's classical origins. If they'd played Pachelbel's Canon he'd probably say it was All Together Now.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 22 April 2006 11:22 (twenty years ago)

Christ, that's painful! A perfect example of why I never believe anything I read in the fucking guardian.

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 22 April 2006 12:06 (twenty years ago)

If Charles died suddenly, would Andrew become King next? Or would Camilla become Queen and then William after her?

JTS (JTS), Saturday, 22 April 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I believe the succession is Charles, William, Harry, and then Andrew.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 22 April 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if the whole "heir's wife has to be a virgin" law still applies (because that's why Charles couldn't marry Camilla originally). Diana had to be examined, and yes, she was a virgin in 1981(!). I wouldn't mind Kate Middleton to be Queen, but she probably can't be if she and Wills have already "done it", so to speak.

JTS (JTS), Saturday, 22 April 2006 20:28 (twenty years ago)

It's a handy guide for dating royal heirs, if he fucks you he doesn't want to marry you.

the planes were awesome actually. we were on a 48 bus down Hackney Road and heard/saw the various waves (seemed like ten in total, all around 20 seconds apart) flying overhead including the Red Arrows, that one with the crazy revolving radar dish on top and the tiny jets that really did look like alien invaders.

On Wednesday, Michelle Obama put her hand on the Queen only after the Queen had placed her own hand on the First Lady's back as part of their conversation... (Less explicable was when President George W. Bush winked at the Queen.)

Seriously, I'm enjoying this "Fuckin' With The Queen" routine my nation's leaders keep pulling.

xp last night on HistoryTV (CSPAN 2), a Jefferson scholar mentioned that TJ clashed w Ham in part because the former into early (pre-guillotine) French Revoloo, latter big on Brits, as this from American Diplomacy journal site lays out:

Hamilton’s approach to economic and foreign policy was based on his belief and hope that the United States could emerge as a great empire, rivaling, and someday surpassing, the empire of Great Britain. Indeed, Great Britain was his model for shaping U.S. economic policies and institutions. Hamilton greatly admired the British Empire for its unparalleled financial and commercial power and its preeminent global position. As Treasury Secretary he generously borrowed British financial practices and encouraged trade with our former colonial masters and wartime antagonist. As chief foreign policy advisor to President Washington, he counseled cooperation with Britain, focused on the common security interests of Britain and the United States, and advocated the development of strong U.S. naval power.

In 1795, Hamilton described his country as the “embryo of a great empire.”

Blah-blah, fucking Federalist. But maybe this POV helped US get off ground.

(Then again, sometimes I wonder if America and the world wouldn't have been better off we'd stayed in the Empire-to-Commonwealth, with no American Civil War and room for our own sep. imperialist adventures? Would not eliminate racism, classism etc,, but maybe not so much freakish homegrowth...would still have to deal with French, Spanish possessions in North America, but might have worked out better than it did, again without too much room and resources for US romping all over)

I've a good friend who is a hardcore oldschool punk, very left wing, who declared on twitter they'd be following the 10 day mourning period seriously. I have to say I was really surprised. I dont think theyre a monarchist, just feeling very English? (hving been born in the UK).

I'm apathetically anti-monarchist as any decent Australian should be imnsho, but I decided not to have Opinions online bcs my mother will prob be offended. She's of that era who crammed the streets to glimpse at queenie waving as she went by and all that crap.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 12 September 2022 00:36 (three years ago)

Other than being a monarch, protecting the monarchy, and thus perpetuating the monarchy and all its pathologies, I'm not aware of any particularly egregious sins that can be laid directly at her feet. Sure, had she chosen she could have been a forceful advocate for the well being of her subjects, but she chose instead to be a harmless figurehead feigning a kind of maternal benevolence. I'm not sure that merits hatred of her, so much as mild mockery or complete indifference.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 12 September 2022 02:38 (three years ago)

She paid 12 million pounds to make credible allegations of her son's sexual assault of a minor go away.
She never apologised for atrocities committed in her name in colonial Africa (from where the Crown Jewels were stolen, incidently).
She interfered in the legislative process several times to get laws changed to favour her or her estates.

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 12 September 2022 03:11 (three years ago)

I agree the first of the actions you cited absolutely merits anyone's loathing, contempt and anger. It's enough to cite it alone.

But as for the second and third? They are common as dirt among the wealthy and powerful. Hell, most of them never apologize for crimes they personally committed or directly authorized, let alone those committed "in their name".

It's possible for world leaders to apologise for the wrongs done by their state. Chirac apologised for France's role in the rounding up of Jews in the Second World War. The Australian PM apologised to Aboriginal people who had been forcibly removed from their families. But nary a peep out of Queen Liz about the atrocities of the Mau Mau uprising, about slavery, about anything.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 12 September 2022 08:57 (three years ago)

I’m not making the case for her being some great and unique evil but saying that the monarchy is and was powerless is a lie used to perpetuate its existence.

Benign

Police have been barred from searching the Queen’s private estates for stolen or looted artefacts after ministers granted her a personal exemption from a law that protects the world’s cultural property, the Guardian can reveal.

Buckingham Palace and the government are refusing to say why it was deemed necessary in 2017 to give the Queen an exemption that prevents police from searching Balmoral and Sandringham.

A spokesperson for the Queen dismissed any suggestion that stolen or looted artefacts were being held on the monarch’s private estates.

Powerless

His £1bn Duchy of Cornwall estate was later given special exemptions in the acts that denied residents the legal right to buy their own homes outright.

Under the opaque procedure, the Queen and Prince of Wales were allowed to vet the contents of the bills by government ministers and approve them before they were passed by parliament.

The exemptions have left residents living in homes that have diminishing or no financial value. The residents say they cannot borrow against their homes to pay, for example, for social care fees for themselves and loved ones.

Jane Giddins, who lives in one of the prince’s houses in a Somerset village, said a “feudal and anachronistic” system had unfairly favoured Charles, to her family’s detriment. “When we die, our kids will be left with a property that is very difficult to sell,” she said.

The exemptions enable the prince to preserve the financial value of his estate and brings in income as the tenants have to pay rent to him each year. The residents say they have been unable to find out why and how the heir to the throne was able to secure preferential treatment from the government.

The prince declined to comment when asked whether he or his family had lobbied the government for the exemptions in the three acts.

However, the Guardian has established that Prince Charles and his mother were allowed to approve the contents of the three acts under an arcane parliamentary process known as Queen’s consent.

Etc

The Queen successfully lobbied the government to change a draft law in order to conceal her “embarrassing” private wealth from the public, according to documents discovered by the Guardian.

A series of government memos unearthed in the National Archives reveal that Elizabeth Windsor’s private lawyer put pressure on ministers to alter proposed legislation to prevent her shareholdings from being disclosed to the public.

Following the Queen’s intervention, the government inserted a clause into the law granting itself the power to exempt companies used by “heads of state” from new transparency measures.

The arrangement, which was concocted in the 1970s, was used in effect to create a state-backed shell corporation which is understood to have placed a veil of secrecy over the Queen’s private shareholdings and investments until at least 2011.

The true scale of her wealth has never been disclosed, though it has been estimated to run into the hundreds of millions of pounds.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/16/Kaiser_Wilhelm_II_of_Germany_-_1902%28cropped%29.jpg

Wilhelm II had this stache and when I was studying this guy for leaving cert history, my friend drew him on successive pages of my history book with the moustache curving higher on every page flipbook style - so whenever I hear his name I mentally think (like it’s a sub header): Kaiser Wilhem: Onward and Upward

Osama bin Chinese (gyac), Thursday, 15 September 2022 14:11 (three years ago)

Even by inbred German princeling standards - which all of them are - Wilhelm was outstandingly boorish and thick.

Buckfast At Tiffany's (Tom D.), Thursday, 15 September 2022 14:15 (three years ago)

No less a source than Tatler reports that the Kaiser was considered embarrassing by his own family

On his annual trip to see his British relatives, Wilhelm was reportedly loud and aggressive, with his sense of humour leaving much to be desired. Meanwhile from the other side, it has been speculated that his British relatives mocked his attire, which was not right for the summer-casual aesthetic at Cowes, with its boat shoes and striped blazers.

The kaiser and the future king tried constantly to one-up each other with bigger, faster, flashier boats, with the German nephew desperate to impress his English uncle, who of course was known for his great fleet of naval ships.

In 1896, the kaiser had the biggest yacht yet built, the 121-ft long Meteor II, which he pitted against Edward's Britannia. After it won, the future king retired from racing at Cowes.

In 2008, reports emerged via the descendant of a bystander that the future king had punched his nephew, after he laughed at him for losing in a race. As Henry Brasted, son of local yachting specialist William Brasted, told the Daily Gazette: 'Kaiser Bill jeered King Teddy about the result, where straight away King Teddy hit him in the mouth, knocked him down, then stormed into the club.

It’s kind of funny except when you remember that Onward and Upward’s inferiority complex was partly responsible for the death of millions of normal people.

Osama bin Chinese (gyac), Thursday, 15 September 2022 14:23 (three years ago)

yeah I remember reading about george v on a state visit to germany, and some german politicians were cringing at his behaviour and privately saying to the members of the british delegation "wish our inbred mofo was as smooth operator as yours is"

More people voted Green in England & Wales in the 2019 General Election than are expected to queue and view the Queen’s coffin. It’s a lot of people, but I don’t think it tells us a huge amount about national feeling let alone ideology.

when they're interviewing the people who are queuing to see the coffin, or going to see the proclamations of the new king in their town centre and stuff, particularly when they've brought their kids along with them, they say stuff like "I wanted to bring my kids to see this because it's something they'll remember for the rest of their lives", and I agree that before republicans get to down-hearted they should consider that for a lot of people this is less about any kind of fanatic devotion to the monarchy and more about wanting to be part of an historic moment, the fact that it's been so long since we had a change of monarch makes it seem more like an historic moment, like if Halley's comet was going past you might feel inclined to watch it even if you don't particularly care about comets, but because you knew this would be your only chance to see it. Or how you might want to watch as the odometer on your car turns over to a number with lots of zeros.

soref, Friday, 16 September 2022 10:51 (three years ago)

i was taken into town to see the queen give out maundy money at the abbey in 1971 when i was (does sums) 3 and a half and... i can't remember if i remember it or whether i "remember" it because i've seen photos of it.

koogs, Friday, 16 September 2022 11:15 (three years ago)

xp yes, but even if he lives another 25 years or so his passing is probably not going to have the same once-in-a-lifetime feeling as the Queen's, where there's hardly anyone alive who can clearly remember a time when she *wasn't* the monarch.

I guess even if people queuing to see the coffin are motivated less by a devotion to the crown and more by desire to part of an historic moment, that's still crypto-reactionary because the desire to be part of an historic moment requires the existence and continuation of institutions like the monarchy, requires there not to be a year zero where everything is swept away - the wish to say 'I was there when x happened' is inherently conservative because it requires continuity, that people in the future will still care about x, that it will continue to be relevant?

I'm pretty sure there could be a ticketing system where you book a slot, turn up, shuffle through and go, but there wouldn't be the visual symbol that looks so impressive on the drone footage.

Maybe the app would crash, people wld block-book, i dunno.

Heartfelt words from a local FB group:

A Royal Farewell

Tears rained down and clouds turned black as coal,
As the heavens opened, to receive your noble soul.

A familiar stranger, loved by all throughout the years,
Your image fills so many homes, displayed on souvenirs.

You were always there, a celebrity before the term was coined,
Our nation has lost a mother, and in grief we all are joined.

We remember your devotion, and smile despite the pain,
And relive the grief for others we have lost, and weep again.

As the world marks your final journey, the church bells ring,
We turn our faces to the sun, and cry ‘God save the King’.

I actually went up to the procession in Edinburgh as people I was with wanted to go (that's my excuse), although we arrived so late we only got a spot slightly down an incline off the Royal Mile. I did see a mounted police officer's head bobbing past above the crowd, Nessie style, and everyone in front of me holding their phones up though. So it wasn't a complete waste of time.
Actually it was. I also saw a handcuffed bloke in a leather jacket chatting amiably with a couple of coppers, don't think he was the one who shamefully accused Prince Andrew of being a sex abuser though. Maybe he just looked suspicious?

Hell is Luton airport.

Always a terrible place to have to pass through and completely unfit for purpose, I had the misfortune to be stuck there during the minute of silence for the Queen. An hour before the silence they started making announcements every ten minutes that this was upcoming, and strongly expressed how seriously Luton airport took this and that it “must be complied with”. Five minutes before the silence a woman announcer spoke over the P.A. and gave a totally over the top hagiography ending in a long rambling prayer for “our dearly departed Queen”,. A massed “Amen” from my fellow passengers bellowed through the terminal. It surely went way beyond what was required but she was just warming up…

Then we had the silence. I’d say 90% of people who had been sitting down got to their feet. I was sitting with headphones on and was scowled at by several people. Had I dared say anything I had a strong feeling I’d have faced severe repercussions. A few visiting tourists looked very bewildered and unsettled.

Then the announcer came back on with more prayers and a round of God Save The King. There was a near hysterical, zealous tone to her voice by this point. I found the whole experience deeply unsettling and could not wait to get the eff out of there. My flight was then delayed by 3 hours. The reason given was air traffic issue related to the Queen’s passing. I have zero idea what those issues might have been all but seems like an easy excuse for EasyJet’s failings. A horrible day.

Hold on it's Talk Like a Pirate Day, will they...?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Talk_Like_a_Pirate_Day

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy), of Albany, Oregon,[1] who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate.[2] An observer of this holiday would greet friends not with "Hello, everyone!" but with "Ahoy, maties!" or "Ahoy, me hearties!" The holiday, and its observance, springs from a romanticized view of the Golden Age of Piracy.

Have they planted her yet?

Narada Michael Fagan (Tom D.), Monday, 19 September 2022 17:08 (three years ago)

Today, I walked along the south coast, from the edge of the New Forest up into Christchurch. That whole chunk of coast has been monetised in one way or another, from £60-a-day beach sheds to tweely named and eyewateringly expensive seafood restaurants like the Lucky Lobster or the Oleaginous Oyster or whatever. _Everything_ was shut, each place with its own hand-printed elegy/notice as to why. I couldn't even get the ferry at Mudeford (only running two services, one at 10, the other at 5pm in honour of her maj).

Christchurch is, it turns out, the perfect town for totalitarian mourning. It's one of the most Tory places on earth and has a population all in fear of their lives, all ripe for some tea-towel out-the-window action. It felt like everyone was in competition. All the post boxes were decorated, people had blacked out their windows; each restaurant and cafe had huge signs up saying why they were shut. You could totally imagine anyone showing dissent having their windows caved in. It was a bizarre sight. Pretty much the only sign of life was in the doorway of the vast baroque Conservative Club, where an old lady with a frame and a trifle on her head was openly weeping into the street. The station was deserted and the ticket machine was wrapped in crime scene tape so I didn't buy a train ticket home. That one was on you, Liz.

ffs they still had a minute's applause at the start of Scotland v Ukraine game, how long is this shite going to go on? For those unfamiliar with the concept, a minute's applause is the fallback when the authorities aren't confident a minute's silence is going to be observed, and indeed the applause just about drowned out the boos.

There's a scientific theory that ant nests are ruled not by their queens, but rather by sizeable fungal growths at their base that release behaviour-altering spores. That fungus? Rupert Murdoch. The spores? Take your pick.

QEII died of old age: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/sep/29/queen-elizabeth-died-of-old-age-death-certificate-says

StanM, Friday, 30 September 2022 01:03 (three years ago)

Nobody dies of 'old age', though. No commoner ever has that on their death certificate. My father who died at the age of 83 had about four different things. Even in death, QE2 ends up hiding stuff from those of us who were her subjects, even though the thing that is being hidden is probably completely innocuous, like heart failure or whatever.

And in a way it could really backfire, as now, out will come the conspiracy theorists - "She was murdered!" "She's still alive!" She really is a 9ft lizard!" Take your pick.

Meanwhile, the world's only reigning queen (there are, of course, quite a few consorts) Denmark's Queen Margrethe II, has announced she is stripping four of her grandkids of the title Prince or Princess. It's not all smelling of roses in Scandi-land right now, with several governments lurching to the right in this mainstay of social democracy, most notably Sweden. But clearly, it's not all rotten in the state of Denmark, as the monarchy there demonstrates (once again, for those paying attention) that it is possible to keep a monarchy and do it in a better way than the UK.

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 30 September 2022 10:37 (three years ago)

the pick i take is that she's still alive (bcz she is)

it isn't a conspiracy theory if it's true

mark s, Friday, 30 September 2022 10:49 (three years ago)

Wait, it's not that drastic. They are all kids of the youngest child. The son and heir, Crown Prince Frederik, and his four children, Christian (born 15 October 2005), Isabella (born 21 April 2007) and twins Vincent and Josephine (born 8 January 2011), are unaffected by the change.

It contrasts with here, when even when one prince is a philanderer and paedophile and another says he doesn't want to do the duties anymore, goes to his wife's country "in search of privacy" and yet we hear more about him and his missus than ever before, *they* don't get stripped of their titles. Possibly Chuck will revisit this, I mean, why shouldn't they be Mr Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Mr Harry Mountbatten-Windsor, respectively? What's he got to lose by doing that? But I have heard no rumours to that effect.

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 30 September 2022 10:59 (three years ago)

Nobody dies of 'old age', though.

Could be a Scottish thing. My mother's death certificate said frailty and old age, iirc.

Narada Michael Fagan (Tom D.), Friday, 30 September 2022 11:18 (three years ago)

Guardian link has this:

Old age is acceptable if the doctor certifying death has cared for the patient for a long time, was not aware of any disease or injury that contributed to death and had observed a gradual decline in the person’s general health and functioning.

StanM, Friday, 30 September 2022 11:21 (three years ago)

"failed the ultimate test" as defined by Dr Richard Pryor. I suppose putting common illnesses on the death certificate wasn't considered appropriate for a monarch.
