"The O.C.": C/D

The T.V. show, not the place. It debuted on Fox this week. It stars Peter Gallagher's eyebrows and a very attractive actress with very sharp teeth who the IMDB tells me is named Mischa Barton. It was created by McG and the pilot was directed by Doug Liman. It's about a kid from the wrong side of the tracks (and with a v. bad haircut) who ends up being taken in by a rich family from the O.C. Melodrama ensues.

I figure the reports will be far better than actually watching the show itself, so post away. Let me know if they ever try and talk about a local record store or restaurant in particular.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 15:58 (twenty years ago) link

Classic, if only for the "Welcome to the O.C., bitch!"...

Ended up watching part of this on Tuesday and it ended up being far more enjoyable than I imagined. The lead seems way too old to be playing a teenager, but I guess that is the way of all great teen dramas (everyone on 90201 looked 37).

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:01 (twenty years ago) link

from the ads I've seen (don't watch anything else! when shows come on I flip around looking for ads. shows're too long!) it looks like crap.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:03 (twenty years ago) link

this was advertised during nearly every break for a month before it started and had, what?, coldplay and phantom planet songs playing over and nonsense/just crap dialogue in and stupid taglines [e.g. 'the O.C. is thousands of miles away...but closer than you think']. I hate it. even though I have never seen an episode and hope never to.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:04 (twenty years ago) link

I agree with Nicole. All I could think of was Ned in a drunken rage one night in a fight over which MBV album was the best. "Welcome to the O.C. bitch!" AS he uses his hair as an ancient ninja weapon.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:11 (twenty years ago) link

A Paul Weller poster? *thinks*...well there's a subset of Anglophile around here that would have that, I'll grant.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:18 (twenty years ago) link

peter gallagher's eyebrows look like two catterpillers doing a particularly tricky mating dance.

i sat through this whole thing (more people in the house = more votes to outweigh you in what gets put on the teevee) and felt psychically raped afterwards.

(okay, so it wasn't that bad, but the hosanna's this thing is receiving from "the critics" really makes me wonder how much worse tv has gotten since i stopped being able to watch it about a year ago.)

the lead looks disturbingly like russel crowe. mostly i just wanted to slap the "teenage" female lead for being such a pathetically toothy gamine stereotype.

"apparently in the 'o.c.' there are blonde ingenues standing on every corner waiting for trouble."

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:25 (twenty years ago) link

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 16:25 (twenty years ago) link

Jess I think the "teenage" female lead is actually, like, 17. And the word is "toothsome." Also: crack in TWAIN. in TWAIN.

Just peeked at the thread cause the show's coming on in a minute and I was curious if I should flip or put music on. Amateurist, I want you to do a commentary track for Short Cuts or something. "So, in this scene, I think what Peter Gallagher's eyebrows were going for was some way of conveying the events emotionally..."

I shun the show for it is not a WB creation. However, I have just been informed that Gilmore Girl's Dave Rygalsky is Seth. What of Lane's budding relationship? Or are they just going to cut her out of the show altogether? They may as well, seeing as little use they make of her wonderful character. And when does Jess's new show start? Venice Beach, here we come? Or have they thought better of themselves and nipped that idea in the bud?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 14 August 2003 18:55 (twenty years ago) link

Barton's gait distinctly evokes Gwyneth Paltrow's, but she also looks like a young Paulina Porizkova, and suspiciously like a runway alumna, though she started as a child stage actress. She's good. Her efforts to maintain her top-shelf high-school popularity even as she falls in with Ryan—greeting the old crowd, taking their cell calls, telling them all how much she loves them—seem right on. Her conversion from best girl to gun moll isn't happening overnight, and she clearly doesn't want to forfeit the prerogatives of insincerity too soon. Barton expresses this bet-hedging elegantly, without hamming it up.

See, a really good actress.

Undeclared was ace. Last night the waif girl wanted to sleep with runaway hobo wife beater t-shirt guy. He even had on Jeff Buckley. He gave her scary eyes and she cried and left, all the while Billy Zabka sat in his pick up truck with the other guys from Kobra Kai dojo and watched her leave and wife beater t-shirt chased her. Billy Zabka got pissed and kicked some wife beater ass and then they burnt down a giant mansion. wierdo skateboarders mom wants to fuck the neighbor, its costing her one hundred thousand dollars for his financial planner penis. eventually peter gallaghers eyebrows get worked into the mix in an eyebrow and hair pie menage a trois.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 19 August 2003 16:09 (twenty years ago) link

wife beater t-shirt spent the night in prison, a tatooed gent wanted to fuck him and skateboard kids mom when they came to visit. wife beater stepped up to tattoo and they fought. Hesitant perky tit skateboard kids mom decided to take wife beater home, for the 18th time. when they got home wife beaters REAL mother was there, looking like a 70's porno star. Peter Gallaghers eyebrows were also there. They decided to have porno mom stay with them for the night, clean her up and she goes to Vegas Night with the whole family. Tells wife beater t-shirt that she is not drinking anymore. When they get to Vegas night, waif girls SLUTTY camel toe mother is trying to find some cock. High comedy as porno mom gets drunk on 7/7 and falls down. Show ends with Turin Brakes playing, porno mom leaving, wife beater t-shirt making more scary eyes and a wave goodbye. Perky tits decided he can stay for good. Only took half the season already for this to be decided.

saw it at the london int'l film fest in like, '96; it got a very limited release in the US. please, please do not be put off by the picture on the video rental box, kathleen quinlan's barely in it.

This show is very good at the little things, warm humorous moments where the Gallagher family sits around the breakfast table and makes fun of each other. Where it falters is in its need to introduce at least one, often more than one, melodramatic plot twist into each episode. Seth is proving to be a much more charming leading man than the other kid -- I don't really see why they need the other kid at all. If this show was on the WB it might have the ooportunity to achieve greatness -- to develop slowly and find its stride. As it is, Fox network will likely suck every last blast of inspiration from it and it will be cancelled by next year. Also, it really simplifies things by having such a dimwitted female girl cast. The audience's sympathy cannot stray from Seth and the other boy.

I missed Drunk Mom -- though the ladeez at 'arobilates' coudn't stop talking about her. These particular parents really aren't so bad, as far as TV parents go, they may be the tops. I'll have to think about this some more. But Mom was looking a bit more haggard than usual, at first I thought it was just the hangover, but it seemed to last throughout the episode. Seth was such a cutie-pie on Gilmore Girls -- I just bet Lane will never get a boyfriend again. Also, he seemed to have his wrist/hand motions in check last episode.

I think this show jumped the shark last night, and you know it pains me to even use that phrase. But really: two, *two* Members Only jackets, gratuitous irony, over use of already played out on the web "young women like the Golden Girls" meme from like four months ago, and generic cheese faux indie band featuring a Coppola as the main "event". Even Mr. Slopey-Haired Oliver seems flown in from a John Hughes film. The solution to this is more stories about the adults (and I am probably only saying this because I am OLD).

some fun facts: the role of ryan on the o.c. was first offered to chad michael murray, who passed to be lucas on one tree hill because he thought it was more well-written. also, the role of solid, working-class uncle keith on the latter show is played by craig sheffer, who many years ago was the rich kid villain hardy jenns in some kind of wonderful.
brooke is terrible, but perhaps not quite as irritating as summer.

These parallels are muy interesting. I can't believe CMM passed on the O.C. He will be floundering in WB-obsuritie foreva. My mom say the O.C. version of CMM on a talk show--said he was cuter on the show that on the O.C. From VA I think, C'ville? One Tree Hill grows. The cinematography is very good. I don't think they know what they are doing lately so ever episode is like, storm, near-death, hurricane, car crash, near-death, etc. If I had to choose between Brooke and Summer I think I would choose summer. Looks like CMM lost out again. Maybe Bertolucci will keep him in mind for his next movie. Bertolluci should direct a WB–series.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:40 (twenty years ago) link

I've started watching One Tree Hill almost religiously because Peyton is a dead ringer for my girlfriend, which makes the show kind of creepy and surreal.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:48 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, i think that's freaky. as i mentioned upthread, the last time i remember seeing craig sheffer he was terrorizing the nerdy kids in teen movies so his new role is a bit strange to me.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 26 February 2004 20:03 (twenty years ago) link

Definitely, give One Tree Hill a try. I think G.G. should come up with some new challenges for Lorelai besides the money thing. We all know that her parents will bail her out in the end, even if it was Luke who did the loaning this time. (From Page 6) Luke may not return:

ONE of the hot young actors on Fox's "The O.C." might not be back next year. Chris Carmack, who plays Luke Ward, declined to sign a contract with the series - not due to money concerns, as some people were saying, but because producers refused to guarantee him airtime in the upcoming year. "It's not about money," Carmack's rep, Jerry Shandrew, said. "They gave him a generous raise. They just refused to give him a guarantee. He's bummed people would think he would leave the show because of money. Chris has a lot going on. He couldn't sign a contract without a guarantee. He is doing a movie with Dennis Hopper for USA, 'The Last Ride,' and has some other things on the table. Chris decided to keep on working without a contract and pursue other roles." Other actors on the series, including Benjamin McKenzie, Mischa Barton, Peter Gallagher and Adam Brody, are said to already have signed contracts that do give them guaranteed airtime.

I kind of thought this show jumped the shark with the Rooney episode but it's regained it's footing by focusing on the adults more. Oh how I wish Marissa would choke on something though.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 6 May 2004 06:02 (twenty years ago) link

Hem hem, can a moderator put SPOILERS!!! in the thread title for us Brits who are only on episode 5 please?

I do not think one single girl on this show is good looking, but it doesn't matter because my heart spends each episode having a rowdy punch-up with itself over whether it prefers Ryan or Seth. I think Seth clinches it at the moment. ROWR. Sparrow shoulders should run off with lantern jaw and good riddance to them, I say.

Fans of Camera Obscura might like to listen out for one of their songs, which I hear will be used in an episode some time soon.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 6 May 2004 09:35 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, they played Iron and Wine and I almost threw up. I love the show but dont do this to me.

Does Seth really intend to sail to Tahiti on a catamaran? They'll probably spin off the show into Castaway 2. Seth and Captain Oats get stuck on a island and eat Death Cab cd's for 2 years.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 6 May 2004 09:50 (twenty years ago) link

LESSONS LEARNED, SEASON 1 OF OC:

yes, this thread is lacking in comment on the eyebrows. where have they been all season?

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:32 (twenty years ago) link

They should have Fox-debuted "Irish Blood, English Heart" as Seth left home to chase after Ryan.

Mom was doing some serious crying--I felt moved.

Props for shadowing Dawson's Creek, but they can't top Season's 3 climactic Pacey/Joey boat trip.

What happened between Seth and Summer? (I haven't watched for a while.)

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:28 (twenty years ago) link

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 6 May 2004 15:30 (twenty years ago) link

This episode sucked. I wanted a big, rollicking wedding smash-up!

I liked the Jem song, strangely.

I'm finding the adults much, MUCH more interesting than the kids at this point. I hope the next season is mainly about them.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:13 (twenty years ago) link

Okay, so I watched this last night and WOW did it suck gigantic moose nuts! Why is the "tough guy" the wimpiest thing on television since Wimpy? Why is his romantic interest an escaped animatronic doll from "It's A Small World After All"? Why is the "girl" he knocked up played by a 45-year-old drag queen? Why is Peter Gallagher played by a 65-year-old drag queen? Is there anyone on the show who shouldn't get beaten with bricks?

I am never watching this again (until the reruns start).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:17 (twenty years ago) link

Okay, so I watched this last night and WOW did it suck gigantic moose nuts!

For reals. What a gross let-down. And the end scene of Seth Cohen sailing away on his dinghy into the sunset??? What the fuck? It was Dynasty bad.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 6 May 2004 18:41 (twenty years ago) link

For a second it looked like he was on a windsurfer; just how far does he plan to get on "Endless Summer."

And he really dissed Summer when he told her that she wouldn't be enough for him if farmboy wasn't around. She was trying to be supportive, "we'll get through this," and he was all, "I just need to be alone right now."

It will serve him right if they go DC style and she takes up photography when he's gone and makes a new life for herself with the ones who were left behind.

Why does Marissa have to live with Mommie now? She actually looked a tiny but closer to normal last episode--I think it was the low shoes and dorky cropped pants they had on her.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago) link

Watched this just once last month. The debutante ep where Marissa's dad gets punched out by Irate Money-Owed-To Guy. Thought it was mondo average, reckoned they should crossover with Dawson. Or Gilmore Girls.

The worst part is Mischa helped make Lawn Dogs one of my most cherished movies of the last decade. But this is not right.

nonono, see they did a really smart thing here: they managed to introduce two characters even more annoying and difficult to look at than marissa, thus making here seem more watchable/less likely to induce nausea.

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

This week was actually good. Characters with personality, closing up pointless storylines, humor! Punk-grrl stops being a caricature and starts to approach being a real person (and they've dumped some of her truckload of makeup and the harsh lighting).

Maybe the writers finally noticed that this season was going badly and decided to change things.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 28 February 2005 07:11 (nineteen years ago) link

I was very amused that out of the "The O.C." soundtrack cds (three so far!), there are a number of bands that some friends follow. In fact, it could be argued that there's a significant subset of bands between their record collections and what's played on the show. There was some article in the NY Times where the show creator/writer guy gave some tips on what new albums to watch out for.

I really want to pretend to be the amazon recommendations by going to their apartment, looking at their music, and recommending "The O.C. Season 1" on dvd.

A fluke good episode a couple of weeks ago and then back downhill. The Alex-Marissa breakup was terrible, Seth is just annoying. Ryan getting excited about the possibility of fighting a grrl was funny, though. Julie Cooper does porn - also good.

all the break-ups on this show are so forgiving. the dumpee is always like, yes, "go be with that other guy because you belong together. i'm not sad because it's more important that there be true love." this show needs more bitterness.

The Aryan Dean is so busted.

Has ILE abandoned the OC? Do we not find Julie Cooper's poverty compelling? Ryan dropping out to work in the man's world (again) compelling? Where's the love people?

This season's shaping up good. The only dud is the Jeri Ryan scam subplot, but everything else is working (not enough Sandy, of course), and I figure Ryan dropping out will be resolved as soon as the Aryan Dean is caught mid-nookie with his jailbait.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 30 September 2005 04:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, almost all the episodes in Season 3 so far have been better than anything in Season 2.

well, i missed last week but im assuming the following happened: julie found out caleb was broke, jimmy made a run for it, kirsten came home, marissa and ryan got booted from private school.

im not loving this whole rehab scam buisness at all. id be more interested in a kirsten relapse. is everyone in the OC going to be poor now? i like looking at pretty things. although julie looked hot collapsing on the seedy motel bed wearing two double strand diamond tennis bracelets + leaking crazy eyes.

i dont know about the whole freaks and geeks direction marissa is taking either. summer w/ white and pink flowers in her hair had better save the day, but not before marissa cures all the public school kids hate with an under the sea themed dance.

ho-hum ep last night. still, i guess we know how the writers are getting Seth out of going to Brown.

when are marissa and seth going to drunkenly boff so ryan has an excuse to go steal a car in chino and summer gets to be bad girl again?

i still dont get what happened with the AA chick and with the reappearance and disappearance of marissa's dad.

if mischa barton wasn't so delightful to look at and the julie character didnt rule, i might have abandoned this show at the beginning of the season.

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 20 January 2006 15:58 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought yesterday's ep was almost a return to form! But, yeah, not quite there - but Caitlyn (is that Marissa's sister's name?) looks promising as a character. They should've kept on with the Summer's Dad + Bitchy Mom dating and extended the money-stealing bit - which would also mean more Julie Cooper-Nichol! I guess they have something figured out for "drama" for the rest of the season? Maybe Marissa's dad will come back again once Julie's with Summer's dad and happy? I'd be fine if they all went off to university and most of the show took place in the summer and during breaks, hey why not.

you heard that tequila bottle smash on the rocks, man! plus all the teary, no makeup, fetal position marissa scenes in the promo for next week and OMG! she doesnt want to do anything for valentines day! he must be dead! either way, that operation was a waste of non-jewish fake bar miztvah money, goddammit!

OC forecast:

i can feel a seth + marissa romp-a-roo on the horizon. marissa and whathisface are on thin ice as it is. now johnny is deadybones (probably), marissa will boohoo for an episode and whathisface will try to help but, man, he cant understand her pain! meanwhile, seth is getting high all the time and summer thinks thats 'ew'. chance meeting between seth and marissa on the pier = sex on the beach and more teen angst than you can shake a surfboard at.

OC wish scene:

johnny's mom blames OC crew for johnny's demise and subsequently gets all stabby with an uninvolved character. probably kirsten.

Two Questions:

how many eps left?

have ryan and marissa, or for that matter seth and summer, had sex since the first season? what the hell?

Yeah, I think that some of the writers must've quit or just gotten bored or into coke&hollywood or something. I can think of several simple ways the pot issue could've been dealt with in a more entertaining (second-season) way. This show has lost its pacing really, and I'm kind of sad about it.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 3 February 2006 23:42 (eighteen years ago) link

did you guys notice the "I'm not listening to them anymore" comment with regards to death cab for cutie after they played them on the valley(the fictional tv show that the oc characthers watch). surely that was them poking fun at people who say those kind of things when after their favorite indie bands play on the oc.

and i'm getting so fucking tired of ryan and marissa constantly having fights, and they're always so stupid! i really want them to be happy together :)

Lovelace (Lovelace), Sunday, 12 February 2006 00:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I think they should spend less time making self-conscious pokes at their position in the pop-culture landscape and more time writing plots and characters that don't suck.

It was great how all the parents didn't seem too concerned that their children had watched a boy fall off a cliff to his death.

reddening (reddening), Sunday, 12 February 2006 03:15 (eighteen years ago) link

And how quickly Ryan was ready to get it on. Marissa was OTM for the first time ever with the "You're glad he's dead! And now you're horny!" line - which just sent Ryan into the arms of the hot artsy girl. With any luck they'll stick to the path of trashiness, I'm tired of all the po-faced stuff lately.

I'm glad the Marissa's younger sister is gone - how did no one comment on the creep-factor of the high-school senior surfer making out with a 14-year old?

I think the woman from Serenity has gotten a nose job or just lost a bunch of weight, neither of which was a good decision.

They cast him well - he just looks dislikable. Sadie's definitely a step up from Marissa, but you know that it's going to come back to some kind of Ryan/Marissa drama in the end.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 10 March 2006 22:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Ryan/Marissa drama is so dumb - there has never been a spark, only brooding and eck. okay okay, and as silly as this show is, I think it does show some interesting teenage-like relationship developments - mostly in how Ryan gets along with girls - it's kind of different that.

Marissa totally deserves to get hot and heavy with tiger-cub guy who's already lamenting his lost youth at 19. They can be all Drama Together.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Saturday, 11 March 2006 20:33 (eighteen years ago) link

How is this doing in the ratings? It still seems popular but is no longer the "hot" show that everyone seemed to watch.

Cunga (Cunga), Saturday, 11 March 2006 21:46 (eighteen years ago) link

7.44 million people tuned in, which is pretty crap when you consider that it came on right after American Idol BUT it is an improvement for this season though cause the ratings have been around 5 million until the last episode.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Saturday, 11 March 2006 21:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Boy does this show suck. I hope they fire Ryan and Marissa next season. Just make the show Seth, Summer and Taylor, with more time for Sandy and the drunk.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 24 March 2006 04:33 (eighteen years ago) link

i really liked last nights episode. i want them to find out sandy's boy partner has been shooting coke all this time.
im also intrigued by the line from that guy who keeps following marissa around. something like 'if you want to take a break from whats going on in your head, ive got something'. i really loved when he was outside he trailer and she came home and did that almost closed the door then pushed it wide open move like 'fuck it, lets fuck.' best acting from mischa yet.
seth and summer, sadie and ryan. eh.

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 24 March 2006 13:43 (eighteen years ago) link

yes, the open trailer door was the best part. and that it's a trailer.

the whole thing with Ryan and Jess, the blonde girl, was boring and predictable though. And holy crap, do teenage couples really ever in real life lose their sex drive??? I MEAN O COME ON. Find one better idea for plotline, srsly. (okay, some might, I understand that anything is possible, but still... IT"S TV>)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:32 (eighteen years ago) link

i hadnt seen any of these people have sex since the first season until last night. suddenly everyone was boffing.

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:38 (eighteen years ago) link

haha, yes, it was the boffing episode! like the writers/producers suddenly realized "holy shit, this is a show about teenagers (mostly) and they haven't been having sex and they even live in California omg wtf what the HELL were we thinking?? how will we redeem ourselves??" Hence, this. I get the feeling that producer guy was maybe going through a dry spell, luv-wise. And now he's back on the horse. good for him.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:44 (eighteen years ago) link

it would have been great if marissa boffed sandy's lackey AND her stalker in one episode.

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:47 (eighteen years ago) link

OHGOD that would've been the best! Why is this show trying to be PC this season (and, well, some of last season too, i suppose), that's what I want to know. btwn the pot-smoking ohnoes and the no sex and ryan not wanting to fite anymore and people going off to brown, it's become a show written by PARENTS. Not good, LA, not good.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:51 (eighteen years ago) link

i hadn't paid much attention to this show since the beginning of the season, this jess thing is fucking dumb, my god, they are really struggling for storylines aren't they? where is julie cooper?

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 24 March 2006 17:32 (eighteen years ago) link

a show around julie i could see. even caleb. but sandy and blondie. zzzzzzzzzz. maybe they'll start introducing younger characters. the next harbor high junior class or something.

and, yeah, I can just picture that intense production meeting where they're analyzing the recent ratings plunge and someone suddenly jumps up and says 'OH MY GOD! WE FORGOT SEX!!'

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 24 March 2006 17:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Friday, 31 March 2006 16:02 (eighteen years ago) link

That was a good episode! I mean, the "dates" that Ryan and Sadie kept having were hilarious in their distance from reality, with her inexplicably running off after 5 minutes and Ryan, yes, being SO dumb, but I don't look to this show for reality. + Julie back in a mansion AND insulting the staff, Marissa back on the sauce AND doing "bumps"!! haha, keep it up, The O.C.

oh hes stupid alright. actually, since ryan hasnt stopped boffing and/or trying to boff that oregon girl for the past two episodes, my respect for him is edging upward.

also: what was up with matt getting beat up? who did that?

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 31 March 2006 16:36 (eighteen years ago) link

I assume that was orchestrated by the hospital admin guy (doctor?) or whoever he is who Sandy questioned earlier and mentioned that Matt had "dirt" on. The O.C. is a dangerzone!

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 31 March 2006 16:44 (eighteen years ago) link

oh! is that why they asked sandy to fire him?

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 31 March 2006 16:55 (eighteen years ago) link

The writing on this show is so lazy. Yeah, yeah, soap opera, etc., but why didn't Sandy just add on two sentences ("It wasn't me." + "I'm trying to punish the guy who did it.") and solve everything? Why did Cohen do the dumbest thing possible? Cheap drama is boring.

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Friday, 7 April 2006 02:40 (eighteen years ago) link

i have no idea whats going on with sandy and matt right now. ive been watching but i think my mind is just blanking out those parts. all i can tell is that sandy is doing something semi-shady and kirstens pissed because he is turning into her father. i dont know why matt is beat up or why the girly matt was chasing just disappeared. is that her father Sandy is threatening to sic the DA onto?
the seth thing, i dont know. i guess they have to stretch the drama out til the end of the season. obviously, he'll confess to summer and his parents and summer will be all 'oh cohen, you lied for me again! youre such a sweet goofball!' and sandy will be all 'yay now you can go to berkeley!' and summer will be all 'im going whereever youre going cohen you sweet goofball!' and then marissa and ryan will be all 'hey! what a coincidence! we're going to berkeley too!' see you in september.

i think im going to miss taylor.

most classically lame quote of the episode: 'Oh, by the way, I lied. Your forehand sucks!' Burn!

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:58 (eighteen years ago) link

The Sandy and Matt plotline is thus: Matt was dating Maya, the daughter of the business guy with the inadequate forehand. But Sandy pressured Maya to talk to her father about their hospital proposal. She did, and they got the hospital, and she broke up with Matt for "using" her. The father was so irate at Matt for hurting his precious baby girl that he told Sandy to fire Matt or the hospital deal was off. Sandy fired Matt, Matt threatened to blow the whistle on both Sandy and the other business guy, and Sandy unwisely went to the business guy and said "Hey, Matt says you're awash in criminal activities, that's not true, is it?" Guy says no, of course not, let me take care of silly misguided Matt. Cue Matt getting his face and big-screen TV smashed in by goons.

I hate myself for knowing all this.

I wonder if the kids are even going to get as far as Berkeley before the producers yank them back and send them to a local college. Otherwise how are they going to keep Julie/Sandy/Kirsten involved?

reddening (reddening), Friday, 7 April 2006 20:35 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, ive been wondering about that but as summers daddy said berkeley is only a short motorbike ride away.

the matt/maya thing: there was a scene before kirsten and julies first big hook up ball where kirsten took maya to lunch to try to get her to go. she admitted matt was after her for the hospital and maya said she didnt care, that she had had a crush on him forever and was going to take him anyway she could get him. flipflopper!

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 7 April 2006 20:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't think Kirsten ever openly said that Matt was just after the hospital. Maya was mad about something else - and then it all came to a head when Sandy pushed the hospital on a double date with Matt/Maya. (Oh, the shame of knowing this.)

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 7 April 2006 20:55 (eighteen years ago) link

I just watched this week's: I'm curious as to how they're going to keep the team alive as well when they all go off to college. I'm guessing they're ALL going to go to Berkeley. And what, much of the show will exist only during vacations home? They should change the name to The O.C.B. I do find myself wanting too see more of Sandy's move to the dark side of O.C. real-estate/mob life. Kirsten looked like she was going out for a DRINK.

The sweatshirt party was indeed LAME. But also very HIGHSCHOOL.

roffleboff.

Tonight's ep was pretty boring. I don't know, maybe I was distracted. Okay, but it made me be distracted. Except for the stupid Seth-breaking-Summer's-Heart part. THAT MAKES NO SENSE. And was sad(ish). Marissa was good at saving the drugged girl and then going home and thus ending That Phase. And not enough Julie. Though she did say "cardiobar" at one point.

I think the best thing was the preview at the end for that new movie about GYMNASTICS - "Stick It" - YES.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 14 April 2006 04:07 (eighteen years ago) link

"its not called gymNICEtics"

ryan is turning into such a boy slut. its great. im finally gaining a little respect for his character.

i dont know why seth's biggest worry is summer. has he forgotten his parents still think he got into brown??

and what about that list he wrote on the cocktail napkin a few weeks back? the list of everything bad he has done that his parents dont know about. wasn't the deal that summer could give it to his parents if he ever lied again?

kirsten sure caves to the alcohol easily. ooo! im alone for two nights in a row. better get drunk! i like how ryans mom called her kerr-sten.

also, i liked marissa's gray shortsleeve over black longsleeve party get up. so much hotter than those paris hilton dresses she usually wears.

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 14 April 2006 17:01 (eighteen years ago) link

alright. so i guess we know how everyone is staying in newport now:

seth will get into his art school but not til next year

marissa will take a year off because shes not ready

summer will find out about seth not getting in to brown and trying to get in to brown and getting in to art achool instead. she will put off brown for a year so she can do the whole 4 year with him in RI.

i thought ryan was going to stay to be theresa's baby's daddy but he isnt theresa's baby's daddy. maybe they'll hook up again and he'll stay with them for a year. how does anyone go from destitute to affording a fulltime live in nanny that quickly?

im still not sure why kirsten is so mad at sandy. is it mostly because he's not around much? i think if he says 'hospital' one more time it might be acceptable motivation for spousal homicide.

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:47 (eighteen years ago) link

it's because omg he's turning into her dad by becoming all tied up in work and kind of ignoring her, as well as possibly getting into not-so-honest dealings with work.

i was surprised about teresa's nanny too....maybe she won the lottery?

this show isn't as entertaining as it used to be, but i keep on watching it anyway...

from tv without pity:

The kids finally graduate from Harbor, and even Dawn Atwood gets to see it. She's so proud of Ryan that she gives him a car to celebrate. But you know what they say -- if a car appears in the first act, it will be in a tragic accident in the third. But more on that later. Kaitlin comes back to town to see her sister graduate, as well as announce her plans to stay in Newport and rule over Harbor High in her sister's place. Then she plays some rap music and throws posters of men's abs on the walls and makes it almost impossible to like her or look forward to her return in any way. The kids cement their future plans, with Seth (whose arrest for arson last week leads nowhere and is quickly dealt with and forgotten about) getting accepted into the Rhode Island School of Design for its spring semester, Summer is still going to Brown, and Ryan to Berkeley, and Marissa forgoing college for the thrill of the open seas, working as part of the crew on the boat her father is captaining. Unfortunately for her, Crazy Volchok will do anything to get her back -- including driving his new car and running her and Ryan off the road. Despite his section of the car being completely smushed, Ryan survives the crash with nary an injury, making him well able to carry Marissa's body out of the car before it dramatically explodes. And wow, it looks just like all those other times he's had to carry her body around, as we see in a montage celebrating this show's love of repetition instead of creativity. And as a barely-awake Imogean Heap sings "Hallelujah" over and over again, Marissa DIES. She dies! And even more pointlessly than she lived.

Did Mischa Barton want off the show? If not, I have a sneaking suspicion that she undie in the fall to rise Buffylike from the ashes.

I don't love Marissa but she's easy on the eye--there's no reason they had to kill her. Unless she is to difficult/costly to maintain.

"Did Mischa Barton want off the show?"

I can't think of any other scenario. She's the most high profile/popular actor on the show, why would they want to get rid of her?

I hate them for killing her. Why couldn't she just go to Greece to be with her dad? :( I'm seriously annoyed with this! Everything this show does have to be over the top. But...this was actually one of the few episodes where Mischa Barton's performance didn't suck. Atleast I think so...

Did Mischa Barton want off the show?

More to the point, I think the show wanted her off. Barton has been somewhat vocal about wanting to be off the show to do other things and I think everyone involved was just tired of the whole thing. c.f. Shannon Doherty and 90210.

As I was watching last night's episode I was wondering how they were going to get rid of her until the "oh, duh" realization about the Land Cruiser. As it was run off the road, I was "OK, this is how they're going to get rid of her" and then when it caught on fire I though "wow, they REALLY want to get rid of her."

three weeks pass...
i bought season one and two on ebay last week. Ive only watched 5 episodes but heres what i have noticed so far:

trey is played by a different actor in the first scene (than in the second season). hes blonde and rough looking.

caitlin is about 10 years old.

julie is really critical about marissa's appearance. 'wear this dress. its much more forgiving' 'i thought we agreed you would wear your hair down. it softens your angles (??)'

mischa barton is cute as all get out in the early episodes. all golden brown hair and a whole lot of freckles. adorable!

summer? nowhere near as cute as she is now.

they seemed to be trying to create some hip youth phases since some weird one keep getting repeated 'i didnt mean to salt your game' and 'hes mad dogging me!' wtf?

sandy is a much more appealing character in the early episodes. sarcastic in a happy way. caleb is fun too.

I put it in my Netflix queue last week, still waiting for the first discs to arrive. Part of the cuteness discrepancy is lighting. Summer and Julie were semi-villains for the first half of the season, I guess, so they get bad lighting. You left out the best part of S1 - Anna.

Watched the second season from BitTorrent, up until the last ten episodes it really wasn't bad. The lesbian love triangle was better than I remembered, or maybe the third season was just terrible.

Heh, it's embarrassing that I know this, but that's an old shot: my sister had a poster of the four "teens" in that exact same pose, with Marissa to Ryan's left. 24 episodes in to season 1 now. More stuff I've noticed:

sandy is clearly the star of this show in the first season. a much more humorous sandy than the season 3 perpetually pissed off sandy. dialogue between sandy and seth and sandy and caleb is unfailingly gold.

they sure talk about death cab for cutie A LOT

i had forgotten how goofy the luke character became following the whole school finding out his dad is gay. like goofy to the point where everyone is embarrassed by him.

the whole oliver ordeal was a bore.

kirstens drinking was already being made a point of early in the first season. when did she end up going to rehab? the end of season 2?

it seems they are using some kind of hook em in device which involves two characters repeating a, generally offhand, exchange word for word that two other characters had 5+ episodes before. i wonder if it was noticeable when watched weekly.

if this was early 2004 I'd be saying please get rid of jimmy and hailey but since its mid 2006 i already know that they did. thanks!

in the few moments that ryan isnt running around either punching people or saving them, he is actually really likable.

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:45 (seventeen years ago) link

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 21:04 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, he's a bore. plus this whole high morality road he takes when julie boffs the richest guy in town or her daughters ex-boyfriend. noone seems to be particularly offended that he embezzled a bunch of money. i did enjoy calebs 'ha ha you sure know how to piss people off, jimmy!' reaction though.

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:18 (seventeen years ago) link

it was totally good! could've been a bit darker - it'd only been 5 months since marissa's death after all - but it was sufficiently dark. ryan changed his mind re: coming back to pool house a bit too quickly really. but made up for that by agreeing to julie's revenge plot. julie cooper-nichol-roberts still awesome.

Volcek ran them off the road.

rrrobyn OTM about Ryan changing his mind. Why do they resolve issues so quickly? They did the same thing last year with Ryan's brother; he left town at the end of the season premiere. For such a melodramatic show, there's almost no tension because you know exactly what will be resolved each week. The writers need to learn how to work a cliffhanger.

lindseykai (lindseykai), Friday, 3 November 2006 16:48 (seventeen years ago) link

right, Volcek - i was thinking Bolcek or Bolduk or something for some reason.

those patent leather buckled kneehigh boots marissa's sister was putting on were crazy for a 14 yr old. wait, is that how old she is? this show...

ok, i finally watched this. listen, why does ryan always run back to chino every time something goes wrong? julie is from the hood too but she opts for pills and landscaping like any normal person would. and that whole thunderdome scene. i dont know. kinda gay.

and i just cant see a scenario in my mind where miss 'eww!' summer would suddenly care about caged chickens. obviously its not going to stick, but still.

rrrobyn, I don't want to make things worse, but there were actually 8 seasons of charmed. There really is no justice in the world.

Really annoyed they cancelled the O.C. since this season has been amazing.

sunny successor agrees: gay dad always trumps slutty mom (katharine), Friday, 2 February 2007 13:12 (seventeen years ago) link

i was hoping they would just get increasingly more ludicrous week by week but they haven't, really. they are rushing through the storylines awfully quickly though (like, when did julie and frank even have a relationship? they were revealed to have been seeing each other, then he was gone next episode, now they're practically married). but earthquake = good

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 2 February 2007 18:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't know, that whole "Look! A psychic!" bit was pretty ludicrous. And last week when Taylor spied on Ryan in a giant groundhog costume. And the week before that when Seth went on that spirit journey and talked to his inner otter.

I like that, for Julie, turning down a genial racist billionaire in favor of a former child abuser represents character growth. I get that they didn't have a lot of time to set up Frank and Julie, but still, WTF?

rrrobyn, breeze blown meadow of cheeriness (rrrobyn), Saturday, 3 February 2007 16:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, maybe Bullit's not a racist, but he's definitely got that charming casual bigotry going on. Remember when he invited himself to dinner with Sandy and Kirsten and Julie and regaled them with his opinions on the Great Jewish Media Conspiracy? "Hold on, He-bro!"

Anyway, I still like him for being so great with Kaitlin. I like Kaitlin way more than I thought I would this season.

I figured I would hate her. I bout gave up on it all last season when Kaitlin said that shit about "ruling Harbour". She's been good, though.

Bullitt is adorabley clueless. "He-Bro" was probably my favourite moment of the season. All very sweet, though. Which is nice.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I started watching the show a couple months ago and am now almost done with season 3. (I have been reading this thread piecemeal along the way.) I think the show reached a high point early in season 2: it was funny and self-aware and I appreciated how the two power couples (Ryan/Marissa and Seth/Summer) spent most of that season apart from each other, since it made for more interesting tension than the stupid conflicts they had when they got back together. The downfall probably began with Kirsten's alcoholism: when season 3 begins, with her away in rehab, things just feel sort of off. Can't wait for Marissa to die!

jaymc, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:42 (sixteen years ago) link

milo z, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 19:06 (sixteen years ago) link

I never really watched the OC but it seems to me the show was considered good when it was a spoof of crappy teen dramas and went downhill when it actually became a lousy teen drama. Is that right?

Cunga, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 19:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Look, they shouldn't have killed Marissa. Thats it.

(OC on every afternoon on the Soap Channel, BTW)

milo z, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 19:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think it was ever a spoof per se, just very self-aware (cf. references to The Valley). One problem is the way the show began to make its sensational elements boringly tragic rather than breezily fun.

jaymc, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 19:18 (sixteen years ago) link

oh they always had tragic stuff - marissa oding in tj etc

I think maybe "boringly" is the key word in my post there. Marissa ODing in TJ was kind of hilarious.

four weeks pass...

After three months, I'm done with the show. Watched the finale last night.

I don't know what you people saw in Season 4. Kaitlin was awesome, but I couldn't bring myself to care about Taylor or her and Ryan's relationship at all. I guess I just missed Marissa drama. :(

Also, the finale was pretty silly with the exception of Ryan walking around the empty Cohen mansion, all Kirk Cameron in the Growing Pains finale, which totally made me tear up.

jaymc, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 19:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I had stopped watching it by the time Marissa died, but wasn't it really weird to kill her off?

I know, right?, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 19:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I suppose. I never really understood if Mischa Barton wanted off the show, or what.

jaymc, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 19:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I suppose. I never really understood if Mischa Barton wanted off the show, or what.

She was being a pain in the ass to work with. Showing up to filming late, partying, commenting "uh, I don't know if I want to keep doing the show", etc. No great surprise that when they got around to dealing with her, they didn't just send her character away but killed her off. (my reacting to when the car exploded: man, they really want to kill her)

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 21:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, definite shades of McLean Stevenson. Also, TV's not shy about killing off characters in general these days.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 21:32 (sixteen years ago) link

No great surprise that when they got around to dealing with her, they didn't just send her character away but killed her off.

Yeah, they could easily have sent her off with Jimmy so she wouldn't have to appear in Season 4, anyway. I kind of liked how the first few episodes of Season 4 were all about Ryan and Summer and Julie dealing with the aftermath, and taking their time doing so. It was only when Taylor became one of the core characters, someone we were supposed to care about instead of a goofy guest star, did the season start sucking.

jaymc, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 21:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Am I the only person that keeps reading this as "The OCD"?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 21:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, Che stuck around a few episodes too long, too. He was fine as the impetus for Summer's activist streak at Brown, but his arc should've ended when he got Summer kicked out of school. There was no absolutely no need for him to come to Newport and go on stupid adventures with Seth. And his appearances in Ryan/Taylor's coma dream and as Summer's champagne-fueled hallucination could've been fun if they didn't scream "9-episode contract."

jaymc, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

kaitlin really was the best character during the last season, with julie and, yes, ryan coming in a close second and third
