OMG

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 01:18 (twenty years ago) link

Oh yeah, I've been looking forward to this. Is it starting soon?

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 01:19 (twenty years ago) link

Millar you should totally try to be on this show.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 01:21 (twenty years ago) link

But I already have a macintosh

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 01:24 (twenty years ago) link

But you need the Clay Aiken hairdo! You know you want to...

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 01:25 (twenty years ago) link

but do you have a mackintosh? a nice burberry plaid one?

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 01:26 (twenty years ago) link

Is it hosted by this guy? oh goodie

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 01:54 (twenty years ago) link

gay people talk like THIS

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 01:58 (twenty years ago) link

That's brilliant. I am dying to be on. I knew there was a reason I don't like pleats... instincts.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 02:01 (twenty years ago) link

Seriously though, how is this any different from this? Positive stereotypes are still stereotypes, etc.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 02:03 (twenty years ago) link

(on another note, I can't stop laughing at "complete with that 'new man' smell")

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 02:05 (twenty years ago) link

I like fashion, I like makeover shows, and I like people who are comfortable in their own skin. These gay men couldn't possibly be more camp than Joan Rivers.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 02:05 (twenty years ago) link

donut bitch wins

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 02:07 (twenty years ago) link

I saw a preview of this -- they make over this burly bearded guy. But they only had him trim the beard, they did not make him remove it! I seethed over the injustice of it all.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 02:09 (twenty years ago) link

that is so gay

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 02:14 (twenty years ago) link

two weeks pass...
Hey, who watched this! I'm partway through it on tivo right now. The opening credits are really priceless. Good production values.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:16 (twenty years ago) link

The ladies at my work were all talking about it this morning. They loved it. Which means I would hate it.

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:20 (twenty years ago) link

Straight men are SO SLOPPY. TEEHEE

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:22 (twenty years ago) link

[insert living-in-Seattle joke here]

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:29 (twenty years ago) link

OK, I actually watched this cos my mom begged me to watch that and Cupid because apparently I "am totally Laura" whatever the fuck that means (I couldn't figure out who Laura was but I wasn't paying attention much). It was ridiculous. I mean, the whole scene about working the product in from the back just pissed me off.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:39 (twenty years ago) link

I tuned in last night, totally prepared for this to suck, but I ended up laughing my head off: the straight male has to be secure as hell to allow a stranger to hug all over you. [The episode with "Butch" the artist was priceless: Carson (the blond guy) was thisclose to copping a feel.]

Now, if they could rerun the episodes I miss on the weekend, that's good with a bag of crisps.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:35 (twenty years ago) link

they rerun it all the time. Here's the schedule:
http://www.bravotv.com/Schedule/search.bravo?keyword=Queer%20Eye

Also, how about this? I heard something about how the main guy in the show is now saying that is was horrible and mean or something like that.
http://www.bravotv.com/Boy_Meets_Boy/

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:40 (twenty years ago) link

I think I'm going to see where to apply. I need a makeover. The jeans+workshirt+Docs-or-Chuck Taylors look just isn't doing it anymore.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:42 (twenty years ago) link

Does anyone else remember this?

Prude (Prude), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

Note to self: more sassy, less curmudgeon.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:42 (twenty years ago) link

Watched the first episode (subject: "Butch" the painter) last night. Seems like a hodge-podgey hybrid of "What Not to Wear," "Changing Rooms" and the like....only cattier. It seemed a bit rushed, but still damn funny. Carson the Fashion Queen is easily the most entertaining (and invariably the star-elect of the show). Couldn't stay awake for the second one (the living room with all the lawn toys in it). The theme of the show should be "Gay Bar" by the Electric Six.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:54 (twenty years ago) link

I really love this show. The b/f loves it too, it's the funniest thing. I'm a little afraid it's giving him image issues ("Should I be waxing my eyebrows?")

teeny (teeny), Monday, 21 July 2003 14:46 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I actually watched this the other night when I was really fucking tired from a day of water park excursions and it was better than expected. Pretty funny, and the guy did end up looking considerably better (it was the Butch artis guy episode).

NA the Billion Dollar Hobo (Nick A.), Monday, 21 July 2003 14:54 (twenty years ago) link

The funny thing about Butch is they just made him look like every other style-conscious NYC guy, whereas pre-makeover he looked different and interesting. He did clean up pretty good though.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 21 July 2003 15:01 (twenty years ago) link

I loved how his Yanni-esque long dark-haired friend was freaking out that he would be forced to lose his long luxurious lockes too!

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 21 July 2003 15:11 (twenty years ago) link

yeah WTF was up with his peer group; they were like a pack of Jesuses roaming the streets of Manhattan.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 21 July 2003 15:15 (twenty years ago) link

!!! Teeny's image is a beautiful thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 July 2003 15:33 (twenty years ago) link

one month passes...
And actually, given the last line in this story, maybe Teeny was strangely prescient.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 18:51 (twenty years ago) link

hurrah! That's a nice story too.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 18:57 (twenty years ago) link

Kressley admits he couldn't have imagined "in 2 million years" that the show would strike the cultural nerve that it has. "It's happened because we have no political agenda. We're all just about having a good time and making people feel better about themselves ... I'm also pretty amazed at how much we're able to get away with on this show. An awful lot gets left in. And I have the restraining orders to prove it."

May I say how much I adore this guy? Thankyouvery much:>

Since QE debuted on Bravo, I've been glued to my set every Tuesday night. Imagine gay guys that actually have fashion sense;>

Teeny: If you thought Butch was funny, just wait til they show you the Staten Island cop with the hot model girlfriend(!) that has to be taught to show her a good time....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:02 (twenty years ago) link

yeah WTF was up with his peer group; they were like a pack of Jesuses roaming the streets of Manhattan.

True, but when was the last time you saw Jesus clad in Prada?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:04 (twenty years ago) link

apparently my college friend Josh Diaz will be on tonight's episode.

hstencil, Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:05 (twenty years ago) link

Oh Nichole, I totally have every episode! I've been looking forward to hstencil's friend as well. Although last week with the fabio guy and his greek momma, that'll be so hard to beat. "I fell like I made five new friends today." Awwww.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:07 (twenty years ago) link

TELL me about it! I so wanted to hug him---even though he could have easily crushed me

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:09 (twenty years ago) link

the funny thing is Josh isn't nearly as much of a slob now as he was in college. If the show was on back then, they would've needed like a three-parter episode just to clean his room.

hstencil, Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:09 (twenty years ago) link

(did you see the QE males on the VMA's (MTV) last week? Pauvre Jimmy Fallon---though he well fit in.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:11 (twenty years ago) link

i hate this show and i've never even seen it! it just sounds like a bunch of "Boys in the Band" stereotypes, no?? one's a hairdresser and another one's an interior design expert, etc. gay guys as cute little pets/servants/culture know-it-alls. we've come a long way, baby!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:22 (twenty years ago) link

Tracer, to me, this show plays with the stereotypes: "Sure I know the part I'm playing, but I do it with a bit of a wink." Who better to poke fun at you, than you?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:26 (twenty years ago) link

sorry, wrong thread - racist/sexist/whatever jokes told "ironically"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:28 (twenty years ago) link

It's less about any supposed gayness than it is about fetishising consumer culture. I'm all about that. Girlfriend.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:31 (twenty years ago) link

Sure I know the part I'm playing, but I do it with a bit of a wink.

just is not good enough. Tracer is OTM - just about every gay guy i know falls into the category Tracer suggests and to add inslut to injury they talk/ dress/think the same. listen to the same Music etc. it's depressing. Maybe i just dont know the right ones but i have LOOKED HARD for a long time.

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:34 (twenty years ago) link

Tracer, what do you mean "we?"

hstencil, Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:34 (twenty years ago) link

yes, i know you're not gay, hstencil, i mean just look at your shoes!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:37 (twenty years ago) link

bbbut I'm wearing flip flops!

hstencil, Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:38 (twenty years ago) link

just about every gay guy i know falls into the category Tracer suggests and to add inslut to injury they talk/ dress/think the same. listen to the same

I respect your opinion (and your Freudian slip), but how can you assume every gay guy acts the same---unless you surveyed the entire nation?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:39 (twenty years ago) link

Tracer, you should read this article

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:40 (twenty years ago) link

btw I think the show would be better if one of the guys was a bear.

hstencil, Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:41 (twenty years ago) link

God, I really can't stand Carson though. I think it's my irrational hate for blondes who look like baby birds (see Kate Hudson and Carolyn Besette Kennedy).

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:42 (twenty years ago) link

i agree with tracer, down to the part about not having seen it.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:44 (twenty years ago) link

I wonder which stereotype I am.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:49 (twenty years ago) link

Nicole - i am gay -- thats the depressing thing about it! and not EVERY gay guy - just every one i know (bar 2) i exaggerated for effect y'know. but seriously gay guys on the whole dress so badly ...and i suppose i'd rather have the guys that dress badly cos they just dont give a shit rather than the ones who pluck, shave chests, dye hair fake tan etc. and end up looking much more idiotic than the sruffy stright guys they are tring to make over.

jed_e_3 (jed_e_3), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 19:55 (twenty years ago) link

Your statement presupposes there are only two options to pick from (dont give a shit/shaved plucked). But I hear your point.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 20:17 (twenty years ago) link

bits of this keep getting shown on english breakfast tv, namely RISE. looks horrible.

odd how nobody on english tv has picked up on the fact that we had a version of this that started a week or two before the american version started called 'Brian's Boyfriends', especially odd as one of the people who hasn't noticed is also a fellow big brither winner. english version is very cheap and goes out after in wee small hours.

Hello.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 21:41 (twenty years ago) link

This show is unbearable, I couldn't make it through the one episode I saw. Those horrible MOR queens and their predictable blab. "Don't you just love the gays? Aren't they just the cutest? Daddy, I waaaaannnt one!" Tracer's so right.

I wish they'd all go away, especially that Carson guy. I mean, they're everywhere now. No, wait, the food guy's OK.

Trish! The Bear! (Arthur), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 02:14 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't get to see the episode with my friend tonight because my cable is inexplicably out.

hstencil, Wednesday, 3 September 2003 02:24 (twenty years ago) link

i did like how they ripped on the guy & his date.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 02:29 (twenty years ago) link

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 3 September 2003 03:07 (twenty years ago) link

so thanks to tokyo rosemary, I saw the episode. It was good. It was the first time I've ever seen this friend of mine wear anything with color. Plus, a few other friends were on the episode too.

hstencil, Thursday, 4 September 2003 23:00 (twenty years ago) link

The funny thing about Butch is they just made him look like every other style-conscious NYC guy, whereas pre-makeover he looked different and interesting.

So they're doing Oprah-style makeovers then? Do they also now look ten years older than they looked before the makeovers?

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Friday, 5 September 2003 00:40 (twenty years ago) link

hello chris - are you hear to save me? Too much hateration earlier from me - i must have been going thru one of my very frequent bouts of loathing.

I just watched the first two episodes last night, and have resigned myself to saying "Sssssuper! Thanks for asking!" all chipper like to the first person who asks how I am.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 5 September 2003 15:15 (twenty years ago) link

I watch an unseemly amount of television and have still managed to miss this entirely.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 5 September 2003 15:16 (twenty years ago) link

I think I've seen all the episodes, hstencil. Does your friend have curly black hair?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 5 September 2003 15:20 (twenty years ago) link

Sarah, he was the one with a fire hydrant in his apartment.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 5 September 2003 15:22 (twenty years ago) link

How long until the debut of Straight Guy For The Queer Eye (30 mins of attractive straight men gazing into the camera)?

No, it'll be straight guys teaching gay men how to play football or whatever.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:27 (twenty years ago) link

according to one ILXor, gay men already know how to play football, Michael.

hstencil, Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:41 (twenty years ago) link

This could mean only one thing: I'm not gay.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:53 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think I'm qualified enough to make that determination.

hstencil, Sunday, 7 September 2003 20:58 (twenty years ago) link

I thought the whole premise of Queer Eye was that attractive straight men don't exist!

Any thoughts on the new season?

I think it's interesting that they now show the fab five interacting with the kids in the household, which they didn't before. Also they obv have a bigger budget, which is kinda neat but kinda dud because it's just that much more unrealistic.

Kingfish Beatbox (Kingfish), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 01:40 (twenty years ago) link

A friend of mine has been obsessed with this program since it practically began, so of course naturally she would drop me a few hints here and there that I needed to check it out. Well, last week I decided to give it a go and OH MY GOD it's my newest obsession! I LOVE Carson, certainly, and Jai is a wonderful doll, and Ted needs his own Food Network show STAT, and MY GOD KYAN IS GORGEOUS, but... wow... Thom. Thom. Wow. Thom. Wow. WOW.

I love this show. I'm more than happy to ignore the hataz and watch this show as many times as I possibly can. Not just for Thom, mind. ;)

OH YES, AND SOUNDTRACK ALERT! SOUNDTRACK ALERT! Not ONLY does it include a remix of a brand new song by my Beloved Boys From Birmingham (which I think is ALMOST as good as the original), it also includes an amazing mashup featuring Fischerspooner and Billy Squier.

Apparently Aus was going to have a local version of QEFTSG too, but it never seemed to materialise. Which is probably a good thing - I dont mind the original show but somehow an ocker version would be kinda wrong, somehow. I dont know why. I just dont see it working.

They finally showed this on UK terrestrial TV last night. Can NYCers confirm to me that in your crazy topsy-turvy world Carson's outfit befits a 'fashion guru'? I mean ongoing 80s revival yadda yadda, but not like that. He looked like a coke dealer from Miami Vice!

And they were encouraging Butch to double denim!

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 19 June 2004 13:57 (nineteen years ago) link

This is a very amusing programme . I have loved it since it has been on Lifestyle TV - though the UK version sucks, it is just a cheap way for UK middle class guys to get their wedding outfits on the cheap - nonetheless it has made my boyf shave his back and for that alone I am very grateful.

It's no more stereotypical than Trinny and Susannah are. Which is to say it IS, but screeching TV bitchy media fashion harpies are the same whether they are boys or girls. And rah rah for them in this context of fab telly, so WTF, who cares.

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Saturday, 19 June 2004 20:28 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought it was pretty awful. They hadn't even bothered to edit it for UK TV so there were repeated scenes at US ad break moments. It wasn't nearly as entertaining as Fairy Godfathers. I mean, who would you rather see made over, an artist or a PIG FARMER?

Madchen (Madchen), Sunday, 20 June 2004 18:26 (nineteen years ago) link

i thought it was terrific although N is right about the double denim-ing. if anything it should all match no? anyway - i thought carson was genuinely hilarious and that this guy http://www.bravotv.com/images/Queer_Eye_for_the_Straight_Guy/Photos/kyan14.jpg was totally hott.

That guy seemed more like he was perhaps on the spectrum? I dunno, I think Antoni was the only one of all of them who was like, 'um this isn't going to be as straightfoward as you think guys'

Jonathan took me a bit to warm up to, that first episode YAAAASSS YAAAASSS YAAAASS YAAAAAS was like LaGanja all over again minus the bad attitude. But he’s such a sweetheart that it didnt take me long

Karamo & the Superman firefighter in the final episode was everything, so funny

And oooh when the sweet gay guy walked out shirtless in his harness and they’re all O_O jaws on the floor and Antoni’s like “does anyone else need a drink?” hilarious

Yeah, the below average joe episode was confusing. Something weird was going on with him.

Yerac, Thursday, 1 March 2018 22:00 (six years ago) link

My immediate feeling when they decided to move him to the basement was that the parents don't want him in the basement, because they reckon they will never get rid of him if he's not trapped in his childhood bedroom right next door to them.

In fairness though, I did get this theory from a storyline on Gilmore Girls, so it might not be correct.

I had to lol at Tan recommending yet another rolled up sleeve to the first dude he took to the menswear store.

Idk, I'm not feeling this season as much as the first. The novelty has worn off and now it seems quite formulaic and designed to wring as much emotion as possible out of almost every scene. It's almost banal at times and full of platitudes. Jonathan will say "yasssss" about 100x an episode. Karamo will say "you got this" to motivate some timid schlub. Tan will give bad, basic fashion advice. Bobby will put some tacky Live Laugh Love art up and make the house look like a million other reno shows, and Antoni will zhuzh up a toasted sandwich or w/e. They put up a series of inspirational meme quotes including Buddha and Rumi, rmde.

The worst was on s1 tho when Bobby whacked up several inspirational quote prints in the new place for the dweeb comedian, and then I noticed they'd used the same one in one of the apartments that was hanging up in the Fab 5 apartment. Like maybe try a litle harder and mix it up a bit instead of having these terrible empty Walmart prints shouting affirmations at people.

vanjie wail (qiqing), Monday, 18 June 2018 00:37 (five years ago) link

Antoni is whatever, he's hot and nice. Karamo moves stuff along. I think Bobby, Tan and JVN have done amazing work and I don't get tired of their shtick ( I think I only saw 1-2 things that I didn't like about of what Tan recommended). These subjects are so dire that they kind of make me a little mad sometimes; I accidentally feel like I understand what Jordan Peterson is so aggro about with guys needing to clean their rooms.

Jonathan will say "yasssss" about 100x an episode.

If I have any problem with season two, it's that there is not enough of this, not that there is too much. One of my favourite episodes from last season was the one with the really big family who clearly didn't have much money, and watching Jonathan goof around in Target with them, buying little cases for all their hairbrushes, and seeing how much they just loved his shtick, was great fun. This season is a bit too issue-y for me. Too much crying and hugging, not enough firemen being forced to learn to dance.

trishyb, Monday, 18 June 2018 09:25 (five years ago) link

That was an endearing scene, but apart from that there's just something cringey about recycling a catchphrase that's already a little unfashionable. Aren't they supposed to be ahead of the curve or something? It makes me think of Broad City, the way Ilana says it ad nauseam. Apparently Jonathan explains to a straight guy later in the season that "yas queen" is a "major slogan for the gays". I think he means basic gays? There's something about how it's been taken out of the drag world and normalised, but also presented in this trite sort of way. I guess it's still fresh for normies so it's easier for him to get away with it.

I know I'm coming across like the bitchy BFFs from that episode of High Maintenance, but it still bugs me. I know Eureka says it a lot on the current season of RuPaul too, and it's like yes girl we get it you learned a catchphrase now pls stfu.

vanjie wail (qiqing), Monday, 18 June 2018 21:27 (five years ago) link

Yas queen isn't that common yet. It's not like hot mess or fierce which became common a decade ago?

Yerac, Monday, 18 June 2018 21:50 (five years ago) link

I don't know, living in major cities I always try to really keep perspective that most of the country is not up to date on design blogs or queer slang.

Yerac, Monday, 18 June 2018 21:52 (five years ago) link

Pray tell what cutting edge queer catchphrases the show could have included and helped mainstream faster.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Monday, 18 June 2018 21:54 (five years ago) link

I am assuming that is for qiqing.

Yerac, Monday, 18 June 2018 21:57 (five years ago) link

I'm not saying they need to use up to date catchphrases, asshole, it's that the one Jonathan is using is embarrassingly overused, kind of falling out of fashion, and comes across as trite. So I'd prefer no catchphrases than one which has already had its moment. xpost

And I get that for many people this may be an unfamiliar phrase, however we're hearing it pretty much every episode, multiple times. It's one of those catchphrases that's effective when used sparingly, but if you're using it over and over again, when it's that conspicuous, it's going to get annoying pretty fast.

vanjie wail (qiqing), Monday, 18 June 2018 22:14 (five years ago) link

I'm not saying they need to use up to date catchphrases, asshole

Ooh, thank you! I wasn't aware that the vanguard queers had coined "asshole" as what relics like me are still calling "the new hotness."

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Monday, 18 June 2018 22:16 (five years ago) link

vanjie wail (qiqing), Monday, 18 June 2018 22:25 (five years ago) link

fyi I also dislike the self satisfied milking of Vanjie on RuPaul. Even that has almost had its moment, and I didn't think Ru got it as much as some other people or mined it very effectively. It was an internet thing and then Ru ran with that and then kind of pandered to people that thought the mere mention of Vanjie was hilarious, when it was all about the delivery and peculiarity of the moment. Ru tried to mimic it and claim some of the glory and it fell flat. It actually wouldn't surprise me if it showed up on Queer Eye next season.

vanjie wail (qiqing), Monday, 18 June 2018 22:39 (five years ago) link

it’s ok if stuff annoys you but also:

i think a lot what seems overused & behind the times or even basic/provincial to you & more urbane viewers may be totally cutting edge to another portion of viewers ie lots of normcore ppl watch the show too i think

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 18 June 2018 22:47 (five years ago) link

xpost I dunno, the show is trying to appeal to a broad/mainstream to include conservative audience without hiding that queerness runs a spectrum of personalities. I think it's successful. I do agree there are a lot more possibly forced tears this season but I think the clothes, renovations and grooming have been on point. Basic but nice and modern, easily likeable.

Yerac, Monday, 18 June 2018 22:48 (five years ago) link

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Monday, 18 June 2018 22:52 (five years ago) link

I'm being somewhat wilfully dickish yes, but that's kind of how these cultural signposts work. Nearly every other line in any ep of RPDR is a direct steal from Paris is Burning, nearly 30 years later.

Also, the original Queer Eye did this all the time too. I still remember, with a cringe, when Carson talked about how women have to shave their chochas.

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 03:10 (five years ago) link

otm

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 03:20 (five years ago) link

Yeah and I get that too about RPDR. I understand he's supposedly paying homage and don't even really mind shameless copying, but that gets a bit tired too. I think Paris is Burning is well known enough in mainstream culture that people recognise when he's lifting from it, but sometimes I think he leans too heavily on it for someone that emphasises the importance of uniqueness.

I agree, Carey. I think the clothes and grooming have improved to suit the people's styles. Not so sure about the renovation. I think they're nice enough but there's still something a little bit too design mag or design store catalogue about them. I'm kind of quibbling though, they're pretty much always improvements on what people had. I guess I just fundamentally disagree with some of the choices Bobby makes.

i don't think so. i honestly don't even think the stupider contestants on RPDR even know what paris is burning is so i doubt the wider public do. actually RPDR needs to just burn, at this point.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 13:37 (five years ago) link

I can see where you think the renovations are a little too one dimensional. People tend to still really like motivational words in frames or on walls though (I blame Keep Calm and Carry On for all of that). Plus it's cheap. RPDR has gone downhill right? I stopped after Sasha Velour won but have been thinking about catching another season. I think people recognize that a movie called Paris is Burning exists (especially because of Madonna) but I don't think a lot of people have watched it in the most recent decade. I am honestly surprised how little so many contestants prepare for the show. Take a sewing class at Joanne's. c'mon.

I love Tan. Especially after reading that he really, really didn't want to do the show and he seems so vital to it now.

I've had some issues with RPDR but it also probably comes from me watching all past seasons only this year (so all of the terminology for femininity, like serving fish, fishiness, tilapia, whatever is annoying). I am glad Tan acknowledged that under the umbrella of LGBTQ, there is a lot that each group does not know about each other. weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 14:51 (five years ago) link

On a few occasions I've thought the show opened up some topics that maybe could have been unpacked more but were interesting anyway. Like in the Mama Tammye ep, where Bobby won't go in the church and Karamo keeps insisting that the church is a supportive, nurturing place for him...yes, because one of you is a person of color who has experienced church communities serving & prioritizing different needs and identities. So in Karamo's experience, the Black church holds space and represents safety and community for its members even when their other identities complicate the relationship, and in Bobby's, the church is the abuser who traumatizes.

The ex-evangelical fb group I lurk on was not having the "all is forgiven" angle on this ep--they've collectively experienced too much trauma. Many of them have been ostracized, shunned, etc, and mistrust the feel-good line about being "loved" but not "affirmed." ("Affirmed" meaning, having LGBTQ life spiritually & theologically supported and not just tolerated among the congregants.) The ex-vies didn't want Tammye's son to go back at all.

Another good point was how at-risk a lot of the cast feel when they leave the metropolitan area and go out into more "red state" rural areas, and they all observed that Antoni can be more comfortable there because he's more straight-passing as opposed to "Big Gay Jesus" (lol Jonathan). The show kept it moving and didn't talk about this more but I liked that it was acknowledged.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 15:16 (five years ago) link

yah Laurel I agree it's interesting however it can seem pretty facile when it's in the service of achieving these neat feel good resolutions. Like yay you're accepted now, all is well, except I couldn't help scanning the congregation's faces for signs of reluctance or disapproval. Don't think I spotted many sideeyes or frowns or raised eyebrows, but some of them didn't seem too happy about it and I always wonder what happens once the cameras stop rolling and they resume their normal lives.

Why do they insist on having these neat resolutions anyway? I know it makes for more acceptable viewing but it contradicts some of what they say about how long it has taken them to find acceptance or confidence to be themselves or true catharsis. I would have thought they might have been more supportive of people finding their tribe or w/e, so they can give the finger to people that wouldn't have them before and probably aren't going to change their views once they're out of the spotlight. I kind of like how some of the participants (probably unintentionally) subvert the show by not following aspects of their advice, so you get these awkward, very real moments. I'd like to see an episode where you get enough of those moments that it leads to disaster or someone just gets rejected, but I can't see that happening because it would require the Fab Five to be cool with their advice being more or less rejected too.

Burner dude ep was maybe more low-key subtle in terms of resolutions but I thought it was kind of nice & i liked that him & the lady got together

Gamer guy ep: while I wanted to kick him more often than look at him, there’s something about the way they use a very mild “tough love” to shake them but dont spend too much time letting them wallow in their depressive situations. I do like that they point out the high level of expectation that comes with their specific heritage/family situations, to understand how you get from there to here. (Thinking about the Kim Thayil looking dude from s1, same kinda deal.)

Like, the Fabs cant turn these dudes into unkickable winners in a week, but the fact that they try & they dont mollycoddle them a lot is good. imo. Marginal gains.

Sean reminded me of one of my good friends from high school. he had much older parents, elderly really compared to ours, and all of his brothers & sisters were grown up & had moved out long ago. his personality, his dress, was 20 years older than he was & he had such a hard time in school. he was the loveliest guy though. it’s like you get preserved in amber & it can be very hard to break out of that if you don’t have outside help.

Playing devil's advocate for a moment, was it really that bad? Yeah he was a typical entitled, inconsiderate gamer slob, but they actually did a decent job of calling out his lies and forcing him to admit at least some responsibility, which for that kind of 24(?) year old dude is some achievement. Also he seemed quite appreciative of what they had done for him. I think he was just very insecure and avoidant, which isn't surprising for someone of that age, and because he's able to easily hide from people for most of the day and probably only has superficial interactions at clubs and bars, he never really has anyone confronting him, and appears to be hanging out with a crowd of bros, whom would probably subscribe to "no drama", "chill bro" principles, despite their own disappointments which they only indirectly expressed through the show. He ignored Tan's advice about dressing, which Tan strongly disapproved of, but he's hardly the first to do that, and if you go back to Tom from S1, wasn't he basically dressed in an unbuttoned shirt over a t-shirt, looking about 40 years too old for those clothes? I know a more formal dinner should require a more formal shirt, but would you and should you expect someone of that age to follow all of their advice? Especially in that more casual sort of crowd. He definitely has some growing up to do but I think he took at least a few steps, and he also has the advantage of watching the show to be able to see how he comes across and what might be endorsed or disapproved of by others.

What’s also remarkable about Buddy is how he’s a counterweight to the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy vision of homosexuality.
Please, don’t … ugh.

Those depictions have historically communicated that being gay means a million different stereotypical things having to do with fashion and decorating and lisps and all that bullshit. But, in reality, the only definitional aspect of being gay is attraction to men. In an infuriating irony, that sexual impulse is the one thing those kinds of characters aren’t allowed to talk about.
Totally. And it castrates us. Queer Eye for the Straight Guy was part of the castration of gay males in the last 20, 30 years. In order for us to be accepted, we had to give up our dicks. You can dress it up all you like, but deep down, that’s what being gay is about: fucking. Even our move towards gay marriage is a weird trade-off. When people said, “Love wins!” it’s like, no — sex wins. Love did not win. Fucking won. You’ve always been allowed to love whoever you want. You have not been allowed to fuck who you want. I’m going to get in trouble for saying that, but that’s the truth.

i'm glad we've reached this point because i think the tension between gay and queer identities/roles/stereotypes and the extent of mainstream acceptance and approval of those identities/roles/stereotypes is worth discussing or arguing over. Queer Eye is not really the show to do that though. it's simplistic, it goes for neat resolutions, it's conformist while making slightly risque comments and references to gay practices that make it seem more transgressive than it is. it's for safe gays, it's for gays that still go to church, it's for the gays that revere authority and want to forgive arseholes for being arseholes, the ones that look down on activists and shun them for being too gay or vocal or abnormal and act as gatekeepers for the community. it's for platitudinous gays that like tacky inspirational quotes that sentimentalise everything, it's for gays that are eager to please. and yet it's still enjoyable and has the odd good insight.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 26 June 2018 00:15 (five years ago) link

I feel ambivalent/cognitively dissonant about this because I'm finding myself agreeing with some of what Shakey posted but also leaning more toward your perspective, Jed. I'm looking at what I wrote and wondering whether I'm being a massive hypocrite or projecting my insecurities about my own sexuality and the sexuality and expression of others. Whether I'm wanting to view a more normalised, sanitised representation that covers up or glosses over or stereotypically only winks or jokes about anything resembling same sex desire, that's pretending to be more sophisticated, that isn't acknowledging base desires or just being matter of fact about homo fucking. Something that revels in certain stereotypes but almost refuses to admit others. Sometimes i watch something like Queer Eye and it seems positive in its self confidence, but then I can't help but be critical of it and its version of gayness, of what kind of messages it's putting out. Part of me doesn't gaf about them being gay when they're pushing quotes by Rumi etc. That's just a certain kind of sentimentalist.

I agree it has broadened too, Veg.

vanjie wail (qiqing), Tuesday, 26 June 2018 00:17 (five years ago) link

i didn't think it was hypocritical at all, sorry for my flippant response to your good post(s). i'll respond properly when i'm sober.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Tuesday, 26 June 2018 00:22 (five years ago) link

No what I mean is I'm looking at what I'm criticising about Queer Eye and whether I've been more or less the same in some respects, I mean with passivity or tacit condoning of people rejecting other people for not being normal enough or whatever. But then I also wonder whether it's always about sexuality. Sometimes it's about them being truly cringeworthy and annoying Amanda Palmer kind of personality types. And they will make it about about sexuality and you'll maybe believe it is, when it's really more about their stupid and annoying traits.

I finally watched the mayor of Clarkston episode. I really liked the guy and his mayoress.

ok, wtf was Tan playing at in the clothing store? he puts the guy in a light jean with the faked pre-fades that he pairs with a blazer and a black oxford shoe? that is a very bad combo on the lower half particularly. he really has to stop with this "french tuck" too. i have never in my life seen somone with the front of their shirt tucked in but the back hanging out.

his bear was bad, as was noted above, but he really suited a beard (although not that swedish death metal beard/twits beard) and he would have looked better with a properly kempt short beard rather than unshaven. I did not like his haircut, it was better before.

style star of the show was actually the female consul from sierra leone who came for dinner and the older man with the transparent shirt was good as well.

as eric noted above bobby is again doing the "heavy lifting" here.

really lovely couple though!

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 00:27 (five years ago) link

I agree with this. I identify as "gay" and would get laughed out of the room if I identified as "queer," so

The reason I chucked "queer" in there was because I didn't want to make it all about gay men, when this is a show called "Queer Eye" and has broadened to include makeovers of at least one person that might identify as "queer". That said I basically went on to only talk about gays.

I will also ask on the gay thread but I would like to know whether or not it is OK in 2018 for straight people to use the term queer? Growing up I was taught (by straight ppl) that this was a derogatory term, like the f word, and not OK for me (cis straight) to use any more than the n word (I'm white).

Quincie, I think the answer is some people are ok with it, but some people strongly resent and resist it, for numerous reasons. One being its associations with a certain kind of preciously radical type, like some people might acknowledge that they're different but being brought under the same umbrella as a person with quite different political views and expression, some people don't want to be categorised like that. Another being that some people don't want other people thinking there's something wrong with their sexuality, since even though it's synonymous with "unconventional" and "odd", it's also synonymous with "deviant", "dubious" and "creepy" which obvs have less pleasant connotations. Some people choose to own it, like "yay I'm queer as in freaky and not boring normal", and good for them reclaiming something and using it for empowerment, but it's not necessarily going to sit comfortably for those that struggle to divorce it from other meanings. If you go back to say, b&w noir films, you'll probably hear the word used negatively, as in "there's something queer going on here", like "there's something dodgy and shady and NOT RIGHT going on here", and even though the word is far less commonly used these days to describe something odd or suss, especially by younger people, it's still around, still tied to another use that darkens its meaning. I know "queer" is supposed to be inclusive and celebratory of difference, but sometimes it also comes across as trendy and representative of only a certain section of homosexuality, imo.

Totally agree, Jed! I started regretting saying the clothing had improved. It really hadn't though. I thought initially he was doing ok but then that episode in particular stuck out. I don't think it's very fair to criticise Tan's style as staid. I mean it is, but these aren't usually the most adventurous people, and he's making them more presentable. However, I will agree he does seem to have ignored some of their personal style. The too short trousers on the mayor was nagl. That's a late teen/early 20s look imo, and even then it can look too fashiony. He also should have just had his beard trimmed slightly, because he ended up looking a bit gaunter. He had luscious locks before too! Tan made him look a little bit neo-Nazi, yes, but also kind of 50s or 60s military-preppy. It definitely made him look more severe, but then maybe that's what they were aiming for, so he would get more respect from his councillors, which is kind of what he wanted.

vanjie wail (qiqing), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 02:47 (five years ago) link

The rolled up sleeve thing is just hilarious because he does it every time, without fail.

It looks ok on some guys but can be a little conspicuous on others. I don't think Tan pays much attention to whether it's going to look more conspicuous on a certain kind of man. I think it's something that on its own is usually fine, but if there's another little fashiony ProTip going on, or some other prominent item of clothing that screams fash, then you're going to look as if you're trying a little too hard.

Lol at all the guys that did this before Tan recommended it and may now feel self-conscious about other people thinking they're aping his style.

vanjie wail (qiqing), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 03:08 (five years ago) link

I think what I want to say to Quincie, to better answer that question, is yes I think it's more or less ok in 2018 to use the term "queer" as a straight person. It has become more normalised, and is generally seen as a catchall term to describe people of different sexualities, without being an offensive term to the majority of people that identify as non-straight.

God I feel as if I'm mansplaining here, sorry!

However, I would probably be careful about the context in which it's used, and I wouldn't necessarily refer to someone as "a queer" or "queer" if you weren't sure whether they were comfortable with being referred to that way. And don't necessarily assume that the person is being precious because they don't want to accept being termed "queer". There is already a lot of policing and gatekeeping going on about what is and isn't "queer" in the gay community, so people can easily feel alienated by that too.

Oh yeah, the mayor. That was the only clothes that I was against because of the weird trousers for such a tall guy. I don't know if he was going for a Thom Brown look? It just didn't work. And he had a nazi haircut before and after, just shorter. I actually said aloud "he has a nazi haircut, i mean it's a good haircut in general, but yeah..." I like a french tuck. I didn't know it had a name until this show. A lot of shirts are too long and cut off at the bottom too boxy, but tucking it in fully makes you look squat and constanza-y if you don't have the best body.

Yerac, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 06:38 (five years ago) link

Fair point. I don't mean to be a judgey dick about it. I don't actually have much of an opinion about how it looks, it's more that Tan has turned it into a thing.

Do you really think he looked like a Nazi with his original hairstyle? I'm not seeing it. Maybe in a slightly Michael Pitt sort of way.

vanjie wail (qiqing), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 07:00 (five years ago) link

It was the undercut and floppy/long top. I stopped cutting my spouse's hair like that because of all the shit in the world. I am googling to see if Beckham is still wearing fash hair. So many articles on this haircut. But yeah the french tuck is good for belly chub without making you seem totally sloppy.

Yerac, Wednesday, 27 June 2018 07:34 (five years ago) link

Thank you for the thoughtful response(s), qq. You weren't mansplaining; I asked because I really wanted an update on current usage parameters! I think that unless I know that a gay person prefers "queer," I would stick with "gay" (for example: a girlfriend meets a coworker and says "oh wow he's cute and nice, is he single? Me: "yes to all, but he's gay" vs. "he's queer").

Which makes me curious as to why the showrunners chose "Queer Eye" and not "Gay Eye," as the Fab Five refer to themselves on camera as "gay guys," not "queer guys."

I like this show for something light and cheerful when my brain is tired. I would kiw each and every one of those guys, they seem like genuinely kind and fun people. Their banter in the truck is my favorite part of the show.

yeah, I was fretting that they were gonna take his whole beard off - as well as suiting him, I thought that as a wee baby attempting to build respect in his community as mayor, a solid but shaped beard would probably help give him some authority amongst older sceptics and non-voters.

Shakey how many gay Scottish comedians are you citing as authorities on this or anything?

(tbf I don't think anyone would take Larry Dean as fashion maven, least of all himself)

i have never actively bought clothes for mr veg before and tbh idk if i would do it again
feels a bit weird?

if you like the results then I recommend trying again? esp if you say "hey I really like you in that shirt" a few times before saying "if yr cool with it I could buy or suggest some others?" and if he's weird about it too then you can both settle into shared discomfort, nbd.

I know who he is now from podcasts, have never seen an episode of Kids In The Hall, which AFAIK never aired in Australia. watched Larry Sanders dedicatedly, but didn't have any wider context for "the guy who played Hank's assistant after Darlene"

(Larry Dean is the only gay Glaswegian comedian I can think of, because I've seen him do spots in Sydney.)

kelp, clam and carrion (sic), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 20:12 (five years ago) link

I would stick with "gay" (for example: a girlfriend meets a coworker and says "oh wow he's cute and nice, is he single? Me: "yes to all, but he's gay" vs. "he's queer")

I don't want to dictate your use of terms like queer when you're just having a conversation with a girlfriend. I think it's just something to be mindful of around gay people, as in when you're addressing them directly, but I suppose if you said to someone else, "he's queer", they could then go "oh yeah quincie said you're queer", which apart from them being like "that bitch quincie!", they might feel a bit weird being referred to as queer. Sometimes it's their own insecurity that they're not comfortable with any of these descriptive terms, but sometimes it's for valid reasons that they don't want to be known as eg queer. I guess you could say the same about "gay" but there's a slight difference in historical usage, imo. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If in doubt and you know someone's gay, you could just ask them what they're comfortable with, if that's even necessary.

idk far be it from me to be a captain save-an-antoni but like, in the episodes where he teaches people who never cook to make something VERY simple (like, guacamole level–simple or whatever), i think there's a benefit to that, because even a little bit of work like that in the kitchen is the same level of self-care as moisturizing or a french tuck. it's not even about it being good (the tuck or the meal), it's about including routines and rituals in your life that remind you to do a little more than just continue living, and perhaps more importantly, remind you of that time when 5 people made you feel seen and loved.

Antoni is the most attractive to me personally, but also, as acknowledged in the first season, he's the most "straight-passing" of the bunch. (I think this was addressed in re to going to rural places and how it worried some of the others but not him and he was like "Yeah but they just think I'm straight.") Seems like it would be a) dumb and b) against the whole ethos of the show for him to be pressured to be more performative than he genuinely feels? He and Bobby are kinda the antidote to Tan and jvn's big big personalities.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Monday, 25 March 2019 16:46 (five years ago) link

Antoni is clearly doing as much as he can (or else the show's producers are) to downplay his privilege. Tho if it's the producers, at least even they knew they had to leave in that bit about Antoni going to a riding camp and Karamo retoring, "We were poor."

yeah, karamo setting up the meeting between wesley and the guy who shot him was incredible

In an email to Men's Health, Karamo said that up until five minutes before walking into the restaurant for their face-to-face meeting, Wesley and Maurice were both about to walk away. "I was navigating both of their fears and telling them to trust me," Karamo wrote. "The conversation they had lasted almost two-and-a-half hours. But in the end they were able to shed light on the violence epidemic that is facing so many communities, while also finding healing and closure."

wesley, man, what a fuckin’ hero that guy is

I love this program.

It was Wanda who really broke my heart. For her to develop a tough, no-frills life and let nothing in, presumably in order to protect herself and her girls, and then to find out that they are actually scared of her and that she didn't do as good a job as she thought she did... that was hard to watch. She genuinely did not seem to understand what was happening. I hope she and her daughters get some further help.

trishyb, Sunday, 21 July 2019 10:23 (four years ago) link

I loved Wanda but she seemed to need something much deeper than they could give her in a week - I got the feeling that her stepping back from her job was more lip service than anything? Yerac, Monday, 22 July 2019 13:52 (four years ago) link

the whole wanda episode left a bit of a bad taste - the usual method for creating a good episode just seemed to go wrong in all kinds of unexpected ways and i ended up feeling kinda worried for the relationship between her and her daughters, she just seemed so shocked that her perception of them being three inseparable buddies was just not how they saw it at all

lmao at karamo just flat-out refusing to engage with / being horrified by rural life in farmer matt’s episode

thought Wesley's shooter could've at least said something like "I felt justified at the time doing what I did, but man seeing that you're still in a wheelchair from something I did in heat of the moment gives me pause". That Wesley still got closure from that encounter...props to him.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 23 July 2019 02:39 (four years ago) link

maybe that's the defense you build up to deal with what you did to someone. "I didn't want to do it but he left me no choice" or whatever his rationale was.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 23 July 2019 02:40 (four years ago) link

WOW. Okay. I got a very strong "anger" read off Wanda during that confrontation with her daughters. I could FEEL the defensive shutters slamming closed. Also, Antoni is my fave and I love him but he was not ready for that kitchen scene with her. He wasn't just pushing her--he was in his own feelings.

And then her almost violent renunciation of the drill team at the end, which hadn't been discussed with her assistant directors? That's not a transition plan. That's just plain rude and selfish--and I think still coming from anger.

All in all, a strange episode.

I was just thinking about this while watching Kae's episode. When Tan talked about showing off her body more, I worried that he was going to put her in something figure-hugging, but no. Still pretty baggy and loose, but just more stylish than she wore before. It was a really sympathetic makeover.

Some ppl really took the advice to heart and ran with it, some thought it was bullshit and they knew better than Gordon, some wanted to make the changes but just couldn't for various reasons.

two weeks pass...

what a horrible life those two were living in that hellish apartment though. i hope it works out for them but i have my doubts.

I felt this way by the end of the episode. It seemed like they were giving each other assurances of love because they knew that was what was expected of them by the end of the programme, but in fact they didn't seem any closer than before. Of course, this could be me misinterpreting Japanese body language.

I had my doubts too but happy to report that they appear to be doing well - Makoto even put out a new EP that his wife sings on: https://www.bustle.com/p/makoto-yasuko-from-queer-eye-are-still-together-theyre-making-new-music-19291424

Love the way his instagram went from sad drawings of him visiting onsens by himself to much happier art + so many new photos of Yasuko: https://www.instagram.com/chibamakoto/

The Fab Five are literal angels at this point.

one year passes...

First episode of the new season was pretty odd. It seemed to me that the person they were trying to help had some serious chemical issues going on in her head. She clearly did some cleaning up of her life in-between the visit from the fab five and the follow-up. Maybe there are medical privacy issues that prevented them from discussing some of what happened?

they did seem to cut something during the daughter's talk w kuramo that felt important/like it would've given clearer context

I don't think I've ever seen someone who looks more like a 'Terri', like if I was asked to give an association for that name it would be p much her

I loved her collection of horse prints in the hallway, should've kept those in the redesign

Wonder where all her trinkets are now. there was a lot of stuff!

me too, and I liked that even though Antonio seemingly did nothing but watch ppl bake she felt so validated by that. cake looked good, would eat

salsa shark, Tuesday, 4 January 2022 08:48 (two years ago) link

Antoni! dumb autocorrect

salsa shark, Tuesday, 4 January 2022 08:52 (two years ago) link

Fair play to them, though, that they saw that the validation was more important than a cooking lesson.
I absolutely hated that horsehoe arch they put in, though. All I could see was people trying not to bang their elbows off it. What an awkward feature to put into someone's house.

i thought the Ranger guy episode was just ok - seemed pretty clear she nominated him as marketing for the ranch more than anything

but i did see a comment “East Texas Nick Miller” which made me lol and is very otm

the whole shipping container over the feed storage setup was fucking crazy O_o

I agree that the Ranger episode seemed like a setup. Again, it seemed like there was some backstory missing. He mumbled out something about "looking at other women," but why were they together in the first place if he was such a hot mess? I don't love the idea of "let's fix this guy so he can get a girl back" for this show.

The trans powerlifter woman was a lovely person. Talk about leaning into every trans panic fear, though!

i loved that episode - Angel is very aptly named <3

sidebar only slightly related: my sister in law used to powerlift & loved it. after a year or two of lifting she had to go to the chiropractor for something. he asked her to push against him with her feet as hard as she could, and she was like “are u sure” & he said “i can take it” & she nearly put him through a wall lmao

Weirdly, I felt the same way about the animal rescue people. It seemed like they really wanted a free barn going into the process, but then she definitely seemed to get a lot more out of it than she thought she would. I felt like she had a weird energy, like she was a serotonin addict who had gotten in way over her head.

I absolutely loved Chris and his complete lack of knowledge about the show or the lads or any part of it, and his lovely song at the end.

trishyb, Thursday, 6 January 2022 18:44 (two years ago) link

the rescue lady’s vibe was intense and unsettling to me— and she has that thing where she has made her career her personality & only knows how to make other people feel good/seen and thats kind of supplanted any normal way of communicating

like gun to her head she would never tell anyone her actual opinions?

i have known ppl like this and i just find it creepy bc you never really ~know~ them

chris was great, and his story about his substance abuse & his mom was so awful & sad

I'm just up to the prom episode.

Greatly enjoyed the Fab Five constantly dunking on the Ranger guy, who was basically a walking stereotype of toxic gender norms. cackled when Antoni dramatically threw his head back and went "oh, masculinity!" when the dude was like "I just eat steak most days, I only eat chicken when no one's looking" lmao

was very moved by Angel and her relationship with her dad

oh the prom episode was so lovely, those kids & teachers were so awesome
