Point Break: A Beautiful Film

Quite remarkably, the purest action film of all time. We can guage American culture pre or post-Point Break.

"Radical son-of-a-bitch" answers here.

Ex-Tennis Star, Thursday, 19 December 2002 02:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

I always thought the scenes where Keanu gets hypnotized by Patrick Swayse's eyes were kinda gay. Not that Patrick doesn't have dreamy eyes. Or when they grab each other in mid-air.

Some choice quotes from Imdb.

Ben Harp: You're a real blue flame special, aren't you, son? Young, dumb and full of come, I know. What I don't know is how you got assigned here. Guess we must just have ourselves an asshole shortage, huh?
Johhny Utah: [quietly] Not so far.

[Johnny Utah and Bodhi just beat the hell out of 4 surfers]
Bodhi: This is stimulating, but we're out of here.

[Angelo Pappas is aiming the gun at a surfer]
Pappas: Speak into the microphone, squid brain!

[After a long discussion about which parachute Johnny Utah should use]
Johnny Utah: You gonna jump or jerk off?

"100% Pure Adrenaline!" - still makes me cringe. it's pretty much the nu-metal of movies.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bodhi also sports one of coolest mullets in the history of cinema.

Ex-Tennis Star, Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Spencer Chow, your comment is a very "post-Point Break" thing to say.

Ex-Tennis Star, Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

Remember when casting people would look at Lori Petty and think "female lead"? How weird. Female lead in a hot homoerotic surf movie, maybe. I love Point Break. Doesn't Anthony Kiedis get his ass kicked at some point? Yeah!

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Doesn't Anthony Kiedis get his ass kicked at some point? Yeah!
see, it IS the nu-metal movie!!!

and Ex-Tennis Star, we're living in a post-Point Break world.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 December 2002 03:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Anthony Kiedis and Warchild and Co. get their asses handed to them by Johnny Utah and the Bodhi-Satva. Then, Anthony later shoots his dumbass in the foot but he did survive the FBI raid at Warchild's house. Warchild and Co. never really understood the "spiritual" side of surfing.

Spencer Chow, yes we do.

Ex-Tennis Star, Thursday, 19 December 2002 04:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'd nail Lori Petty! I'd rip the crotch out of that Body Glove wetsuit.

Ex-Tennis Star, Thursday, 19 December 2002 04:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Whatever happened to the days when plain-jane-types Elizabeth Perkins & Debra Winger & Margot Kidder were cast as romantic leads instead of the Wiser Best Friend or Worldly Co-Worker or Older Mother Figure (or Crazy Loon, in Ms. Kidder's case)? They're casting the same guys as they did back then (sorta) (well, not really) (OK, never mind) - show the ladies some love, damn it!

I ask because I have a crush on Bonnie Hunt right now. Back off - she's mine!

This really doesn't have much to do w/ the Mary Stuart Masterson / Lori Petty / Ally Sheedy tomboy/Peppermint-Patty-as-hetero-love-interest thing, but I just wanted to mention it. Yeah.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 19 December 2002 05:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Demi Moore ruined it with G.I. Jane.

Ex-Tennis Star, Thursday, 19 December 2002 07:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

i love this film. so many quality moments.

Utah on tailing Bodhi:
"he stops off at tower records, buys some CDs, has lunch as Patrick's Roadhouse" (hawhaw!)

Pappas on meatball sandwiches:
"Johnny! Get me two!"

Nixon:
"I am not a crook"

RHCP:
"that would be... a waste of time"
"we're just gonna fuck you up"

other quality moments:
Pappas the wax expert
"one fucking hair"
"who packed my chute?" scene
"i... am an F...B...I... agent!"

i could go on forever...

"sorry jonny, looks like you don't get to be president"

(yes, i have seen this film an unhealthy number of times)

Point Break vs. Top Gun????

Hmm, this is a tough choice for me.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Point Break, for sure. Would Tom Cruise or Val Kilmer actually do their own skydiving scenes like Patrick Swayze. Don't forget Gary Busey's Angelo. He is way cooler than Anthony Edwards as a sidekick. Top Gun has some classic one-liners but you could turn some scenes in Point Break into songs. Edge: Point Break.

Where is Keanu these days? He's a bad actor, but in a way I find completely inoffensive. He's also so very cute. No matter how buff he gets, he still seems all sweet and submissive. And such pretty eyes. *swoons*

on tv again last night. of course i watched it. I still can't get over the fact that Utah doesn't shoot The Swayze after he chases him down that waterway thingy when he's got him in his sights and stuck on the fence. I mean is it whats underneath the mask? That wet poodle Swayze wears on his head throughout the film? I mean Utah, this guy used to fuck your girlfriend and now he wants to kill her. Shoot the fucking guy.

I'd never seen this until last night, when I specifically rented it because I was so ashamed at this missing link in my knowledge of the world. And it did not disappoint. When I saw John McGinley and James LeGros in the opening credits I knew I was in good hands. Thumbs up to all the aforementioned lines, the smart casting of Lori Petty as Love Interest, hott bromance. And maybe I've just been ruined by today's editing, but I found all the action sequences really coherent and exciting, esp. the foot chase where teh Swayze just runs through peoples' houses all Ferris-style, picking up dogs and throwing them at Keanu, leaping fences, whatever it takes.

Still, it's hilariously easy to spot the exact moments where Adam Carolla or somebody would go off on eviscerating how stupid this movie gets.

Sequel?

When Billy Dalton, military special ops and star surfer, is disqualified from the pro-surfing tour, he takes off for the coast of Bali looking for the perfect wave. While there hes recruited by a private security force who are trying to find a gang known as The Bush Administration, surfing outlaws and modern day pirates who work like The Ex-Presidents, a bank robbing crew from Malibu twenty years ago.

I'm guessing this might not be quite such a beautiful film.

the directors name is "Ericson Core"!

and the screenwriter (who also wrote the "Total Recall" remake) looks like this:

surely this will be a masterpiece.

for all the exxxtreme-to-the-maxxxx action on display in this trailer i bet there's nothing as exciting as the sequence in the original where keanu chases swayze on foot over fences and thru alleys and houses, which remains fucking amazing

also this luke bracey guy does an amazing job of sucking the life from the screen every time he appears on it

as i recall that chase just goes on forever and it's great.

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Thursday, 28 May 2015 03:33 (eight years ago) link

watched this tonight, man I forgot how stupid the second half is. it's about on par with a 70s doctor who episode in terms of plot.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Thursday, 28 May 2015 03:42 (eight years ago) link

that was a first-rate chase

and yes it is deeply stupid, but not pernicious

(unless yer a Buddhist perhaps)

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 May 2015 04:26 (eight years ago) link

some of the dialogue is kind of pernicious. it's pretty much an exercise in exuberance and style, and everything else is just wasted motion.

scheduled to be released on December 25

this remake looks like shit but 20 y.o. me would have loved spending Christmas watching the original

is going to the cinema on Christmas Day a thing in the US? i think they're maybe closed for the day in the UK

read today that the rock wants to star in a remake of big trouble in little china, confirming my suspicions that hollywood is attempting to fuck with all the movies i loved as a 15-year-old

bizarro gazzara, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 14:20 (eight years ago) link

Christmas is still a massive movie-going day in the US, as is Thanksgiving. A great way to pass a couple hours with family; nobody is allowed to talk.

First movie I ever saw when I was high. Freaked out inside when Utah almost got his head shoved in the lawnmower.

I just googled when it was released on VHS and one of the questions google suggested was, "is Point Break based on a true story?"

I just caught the second half of this last night. Loling at the part where the Ex-Presidents are so radical that when it comes time to make a bonfire, they don't open the container of lighter fluid, but stick a butterfly knife in it. Seems like a terrible bonfire/great way to set yourself on fire.
