Is Home Movies the one with the football coach and the permanently bemused mom? I like that one very much, maybe even more than Brak. I've only seen two episodes but they were both gems.

Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law

God, I don't know where to start with that. I'm usually laughing so hard at the premise alone that I miss 33.333% of the show.

Space Ghost recently went to Braks house to arrest him for crimes he commits later in life. But it was later in life in his (SG's) old 60's show so it was really in the past. Man that was confusing.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'll say Home Movies cuz it's the only one not completely based in the 'look it's dada!' ethos of most of the other Adult Swim shows (which I do love, just they can get a little repetitive and formulaic); plus I miss Dr. Katz. Space Ghost Coast to Coast is in a league of it's own still. The Aqua Teen Hunger ep with the pop-up ads was probably my single favorite Adult Swim ep that wasn't a Space Ghost.

http://www.animationinsider.net/forums/showthread.php?t=18702

The Boondocks, Cartoon Network's witty, controversial series, won't return this year as expected, says show creator Aaron McGruder.

The second season of the animated series, based on The Boondocks' comic strip, was given a late 2006/winter 2007 date to return to Cartoon Network's late-night block, Adult Swim, after its hugely successful first season (it was the highest-rated series premiere in Cartoon Network history).

Network execs, in fact, bumped the number of The Boondocks' episodes up from 15 to 20 - which seems to have contributed to the delay.

"Our production schedule is really, really long," says McGruder, who's publicizing the first-season DVD.

"We're halfway through the writing and just getting under way with the animation."

McGruder now says fans should look for the series to return in March.

[ . . . ]

"It's really hard," [McGruder] says. "We're working more and more with artists overseas. We now have a Japanese anime studio named Madhouse to help us out.

"I was happy with a lot of season one, but I thought a lot of it could look better. We're really passionate artists.

"The people working with me on the show are phenomenal, phenomenal artists and they really care about getting it right."

voodoo brown (Stevie D), Sunday, 22 March 2009 16:34 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think Frisky Dingo was nec. too smart for TV - it's actually more accessible than a lot of Adult Swim shows. In a way I felt like it was the logical conclusion to what the adult swim people have been working at for a long time.

It did share Arrested Development's problem in another way - a linear plot and jokes that built on each other episode to episode. So if someone started watching at episode 8 or whatever, they a. won't have any idea what's going on or who the fuck that muscular monster dude is b. aren't gonna find the funniest jokes funny.

Horrible, horrible model for attracting new viewers but at the same time Frisky Dingo without those things would prolly suck.

iatee, Sunday, 22 March 2009 17:38 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, that's probably a better way of putting it - both shows are accumulative and require dedication, which is more than quite a lot of people are willing to give. agreed it was more accessible than other Adult Swim stuff - it's basically their huge juggernaut animated sitcom spectacular, where the experimentalism and iconoclasm of their more nuggety stuff gets fleshed out into a genuine narrative

Finally got around to watching the first season of Frisky Dingo on DVD. A lot of pretty funny stuff, and way more ambitious than Sealab - I tried watching when it was on the air, but caught random eps and the show's plot/characterizations are already kinda confusing without watching them out or order.

I have to wonder though - between all the obnoxious Chinese stereotypes in this and the godawful Dickesode and "Shake turns black" episodes of ATHF when did adult swim go from hilarious surreal comedy to crutching on sub-Mencia-level racist "humor"? Really kept taking me out of it. Even the third episode of Archer that just aired was one of those bog-standard, obviously-written-by-lame-white-dudes "diversity in the workplace" plots. It's enough for me to not bother going to the second season of FD.

Nhex, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 06:28 (fourteen years ago) link

I dunno, I never took frisky dingo's humor to be racist - self-aware references to racial stereotypes isn't off-limits imo

It sometimes felt like they wanted to have their cake and eat it too (like the ugh dry cleaner - turning out to be a white guy after all - but then he's not! lulz.) but by the time they got to the rabbit fighting shit in Chinatown and the goddamn sweatshops it was really ruining it for me.

Nhex, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 06:50 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah but the jokes don't come from laughing AT sweatshop/chinatown/whatever, just using them for the absurdist situation?

iatee, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 06:55 (fourteen years ago) link

the little dingo i've seen has this family guy element (the Walt Disney JEEEEEWWWWWW!!! sequence in particular) where it stops being "jokes that comment on racism" and starts being "jokes that draw attention to racism." A lot of it seems like wanting to tell a racist joke, but putting a vague veil of "cultural commentary" on it to get away with it

My favorite use of that type of bit, though, is probably the "Cash Stall" bit in "Jon Benjamin Has a Van." Still cracks me up.

i'm a big fan of that early ATHF/Sealab/Brak Show/VB era. but the humor started getting even more "out there" / weird for weirdness sake (later Aqua Teen, Squidbillies, Tim and Eric) and when they started doing live-action stuff that was kind of the beginning of the end. i remember sitting down and trying to watch some puppet show about Dracula or something and thinking what the hell happened to this block

obviously a large part of this is my lifelong fondness for cartoons and being less appreciative of the Land of the Lost/low budget 80s video/public access style they started going with with all their stuff. i guess i couldn't handle the new empires of irony

pplains, Monday, 10 November 2014 14:39 (nine years ago) link

The oft-overlooked thing that makes Adult Swim great is that their stuff is pretty pointedly not for everyone, and even people who generally dig what they do aren't going to necessarily dig everything they do. A lot of AS stuff leaves me kinda cold, TBH, but Tim & Eric and most of the AS/Comedy Central shows handled by their production company (e.g. Eric Andre, Nathan For You, Review) often hits just the right note in my personal brain. I felt like Too Many Cooks! definitely had some similarity to that stuff, less because of the VHS aesthetic than because of its willingness to follow the premise down a dark and very weird road (sorta like the currently-airing Tim & Eric's Bedtime Stories, a show which would likely appeal to people who disliked their earlier stuff but which those people are probably hugely disinclined to check out).

We used most of it because we shot this in pretty much two days. I’m going to give you little aside: We shot in two days and we used extras because we didn’t have a lot of money. They were very excited they were going to get a screen credit. But, yeah, there were two things I’ll tell you. At the very end, when they’re all on the couch we had a flaming juggler, but we decided that was too wacky — although obviously the whole thing is wacky. And, during the ending credits, I had a stay tuned for “Two in the Bush” and I had a little soundbite of a different type of show, but we decided it was funnier just to get out very quickly.

Most of this Too Many Cooks thing didn't really do it for me but I liked the Lars Von Trier bit best.

Watching this blow up is pretty interesting. This thing is like, almost a decade after Wonder Showzen, Xavier: Renegade Angel, and Tim and Eric's Awesome Show, all which tread pretty similar ground, but were way more inventive and wild imo. Too Many Cooks is like a watered down, dumbed down version of those shows ... it's like watching a bell curve in action--shift the creative, intelligent "out there" shit closer to the middle of the curve, and you start to hit a sweet spot with the masses.

Copy/pasting what I wrote about this on Letterboxd: "Delightfully perverse, and, for once, a worthy viral sensation, but the turn towards all-out horror in the final minutes might put too fine a point on the whole thing. Aren't the patronizing racial politics, family-friendly smut and the overall tone of squeaky-cleanliness all sinister enough without letting a slasher on the loose?"

Actually that was some of the most excruciating violence I've seen since Inside. But I didn't think Adult Swim would regularly have the sort of gory rampage of Too Many Cooks.

Isn't Adult Swim mostly aimed at teens?

I know the 80s was quite a long while ago but it's kind of amazing to me how this sort of content could land people in jail back then and in that Video Nasties documentary you see this old politician who still believes today these cheesy films were actual snuff films, and Walking Dead, Game Of Thrones and Adult Swim shows violence more extreme (than most of those films) to a much wider audience.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 10 November 2014 20:49 (nine years ago) link

the farakhan of gg (DJP), Monday, 10 November 2014 21:10 (nine years ago) link

The serial killer part is probably my biggest problem with Too Many Cooks, and the fact that everyone is all "I love it!" made me think I inhabit some other divide re: taste. I mean, it's just pure, gory sadism and torture of people, like a snuff film or something. T&E can be pretty sadistic, but it's a sadism directed at the audience, ideas, and institutions generally, same with Wonder Showzen, etc. At its worst those shows exhibited shithead hipster attitudes, which at least had the benefit of making you examine your own prejudices and shithead attitudes (which would be cool if that was intentional). TMC was just a guy hacking people up with a machete with way too much detail for me to stomach and not much point to it, either. It was extreme violence for pleasure, which makes me a little uneasy.

The guy who made this also made Squidbillies which also revels in the same sort-of sadism and violence (see how's life's comment above), so maybe it's just not my thing. Same goes with stuff like Superjail. I like some pretty bizarre shit, and I think violence can be used intelligently in a work, but not so much watching people get their heads sliced off for laffs. Faces of Death: The Comedy Edition! Laugh yourself to death at someone else's death. I guess I just don't get it.

moneyma$e, Monday, 10 November 2014 21:12 (nine years ago) link

the first year or two of adult swim was pretty random. the commercials were a mixture of kid-oriented toy ads mixed in with infomercial-style crap as the time crept past midnight. I remember one of the first ads they'd obviously booked for the AS demographic was for Target and featured Michelle Branch promoting her album

however, they still had their commercials underbooked so you heard fifteen seconds of the same song, followed by "buy her new album, today at Target" two or three times per commercial break

jenny holzer, ilxor (mh), Monday, 10 November 2014 21:13 (nine years ago) link

idk, the serial killer guy seems more like a send-up of cheap 80s horror movie trash than anything. some creepy-looking guy chasing people around with a machete is kind of the epitome of cheap

jenny holzer, ilxor (mh), Monday, 10 November 2014 21:15 (nine years ago) link

I could way too easily go off on some Odenkirk-esque tangent about how and why all of the elements are amazing but it's really just down to what you dig and find funny at the end of the day. I thought Machete Man was one of the most amazing parts of this, FWIW, but not because of anything salacious or sadistic (an interpretation that feels like it's missing the point a bit but whatevs).

i only wanted freidn (Old Lunch), Monday, 10 November 2014 21:19 (nine years ago) link

I'm surprised that Too Many Cooks did it for me too, when I normally despise Tim and Eric. It's hard to put my finger on exactly why; maybe Tim and Eric feels to me like the condescension and cynicism IS the joke, rather than just the form.
Like that "Toes" short was decently directed for T&E but still didn't really amount to anything besides a few shots of gore humor. And it didn't piss me off the way their normal terribad VHS stuff does.

I think it was elsewhere on ilx that convinced me that half the T&E-style sketches are incredibly accurate recreations of the sort of stuff that'd appear on local access talent shows, or other weird local stuff that doesn't really exist in that form anymore
The problem is this just makes it a more obscure version of what everyone criticizes shows like Family Guy for - if there's no actual joke/scenario/plot/story (take your pick), it's just a bunch of smug idiots pointing their fingers and haw-hawing it up. Just referencing something goofy in the past isn't inherently funny; even worse is forcing the audience to watch slow, terrible acting, editing, etc. in the name of the "joke"... then stringing together about a dozen of them for an episode block.

That said T&E does, once in a blue moon, make something I find funny, but most of the time it's a dud for me
I hate Squidbillies too for what it's worth (nothin')

Nhex, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 19:25 (nine years ago) link

Tim & Eric's prevailing interest seems to be in examining how weird human behavior is (like, just run of the mill stuff we all unthinkingly do on a daily basis), and more specifically how we express that weirdness via entertainment. There's absolutely a prevailing point of view that lifts their stuff above crap like Family Guy. That viewpoint and the nightmarish, Lynchian stuff (which has always been present in their work but seems to be becoming more prevalent) are why I love them.

Tim and Eric had a lot of good bits but they have tested my faith over the last few years. I still love Check It Out! though.

I turned off The Comedy and the T&E movie pretty quickly.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 20:23 (nine years ago) link

The Comedy's pretty pointedly not a comedy, more of a critique of irony drenched, hyper cynical, privileged hipster shithead attitudes. Unpleasant viewing but kinda interesting, for a while at least. Not sure it really went anywhere or added up to much.

imago, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 21:21 (nine years ago) link

Maybe I'm just way the hell out of touch with what codes as 'privileged hipster shithead' these days (entirely possible) but I've never gotten the impression that their stuff was informed by those attitudes. The fact that they've done next-to-no straight press probably hasn't done them many favors with people who aren't inclined to meet them halfway, but what biographical info I do know about them suggests that they're pretty decent and normal dudes who people really enjoy working with.

I think the episode of WTF with both of them was the closest I've heard them come to "straight" press, though even then it was couched in a Maron's stand-offish attitude and a few "standard" T&E detours into absurdity. I think your last line though nails what I kinda took away from the interview.

i dunno man. if it'd been just the first 4 minutes, or if it carried on the basic premise with no twist for 11 minutes, it'd be a lot less interesting/noteworthy/funny, and probably wouldn't have been deemed worth doing. at least not as a standalone program, maybe it would've been done as part of an episode of a series and nobody would've cared.

Q: Sending up TV credits is one thing; where did the idea of throwing a Jason-like killer with a machete into the mix come from?

A: Well, you have to remember: These things are 11 minutes long. It sounds short, but when you have to fill that time slot and keep the attention of people who are usually watching TV at four in the morning...it's long. So I thought, I need to throw every notion I've got into this. Even when you start switching genres, and it turns into, say, a cop show — that joke may be funny for a few extra minutes and then that's going to wear off. And as soon as people get tired of that, I have to hit them with something else. That's where the idea of the killer came from.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 00:06 (nine years ago) link

Tim and Eric's sense of humor is more complex and multi-layered than it might seem at first glance ... it's great if you like jokes that have multiple levels to them, and like really stupid stuff, too. It's like the Simpsons, some of their best jokes have at least three different levels to them, and T&E's best stuff plays with that like an art. Not to mention their great absurd and surreal material, satire of things not commonly satirized, etc.

The serial killer thing in TMC did feel a little like a crutch plus a play at the lowest common denominator, which I guess hit my snob reflex. Also, the premise was already done by MadTV over a decade ago, which took away that novelty for me, too. Basically I couldn't find anything catching to it b/t the now-ancient T&E and PFFR aesthetic, cheap and gory serial killer thing, and the premise already having been done even longer ago. I guess I just demand novelty out of my stupid pastimes, and there's still so much ground to cover.

the problem is this stuff isn't about concept, its about execution, and the aesthetic is about certain sorts of characteristic period details, which is where this stuff shines.

also 2 minutes isn't long enough for the gag to work.

everybody loves lana del raymond (s.clover), Wednesday, 12 November 2014 04:06 (nine years ago) link

That Mad TV sketch does way more with its 2 minutes than the entire 11 minutes of TMC. It captures the characteristic period details, plays around with sitcom archetypes, takes them in funny new directions, and turns it into a total laugh package with a nice absurd ending. You don't need a jammed-in serial killer/sci-fi sub plot to make that joke. Plus it has the benefit of not plagiarizing its source material. I also think the actors and characters they created for that sketch were funnier ... the funniest in TMC being the nerd and the topless girl. Doesn't touch the black-clad manhunter, incestuous? twins eating a foot long hotdog, grumpy kingpin popping the kid's balloon, insane mercenary, etc.

If you want to see period aesthetic done right, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is good, it captures that syndicated 80s sci-fi/horror serial look and does some really funny stuff with it. And that's a decade old, too. Thumbs down. I should probably get back to work.

MadTV's celebrity sketches always made me laugh. One of the guys did a spot-on Dane Cook impersonation that I still think about from time to time, it's really great. That said I didn't like any of their recurring characters and they often went way too far in an unfunny direction. I think Key & Peele talked about this to some extent because they were on the show in its final seasons, that it was difficult to really do anything too adventurous as their audience was mostly teenagers. Probably still better than most concurrent SNLs!

The popularity of "Too Many Cooks" seems linked to the nostalgic touchstones (Roseanne, GI Joe, etc) it employs up until the serial killer stuff starts happening. Really the only explanation I can think of for it's mass appeal.

The Newbridge infomercial was fantastic, but very niche in a lot of it's humor. Felt like I was watching Tom Goes to the Mayor again (a good thing)

It's A Living! (Old Lunch), Thursday, 13 November 2014 19:17 (nine years ago) link

the element of surprise was a big part of the 'success' of it, that it was just a standalone thing that wasn't advertised ahead of time and featured no known stars. compare that to something like "The Greatest Event in Television History," another Adult Swim one-off lampooning '80s TV opening credits that featured famous people and had an ironically aggrandizing title and was advertised ahead of time but wasn't actually very entertaining at all.

Def feel like Too Many Cooks just doesn't commit hard enough to what it's supposed to be -- should be longer, should be more even in tone, lose the serial killer and hero gags.

FWIW in the version I had in my mind the movement was less linear, like there wouldn't be an obvious relationship between one character and the next, location might jump around, etc. Of course this could be very expensive and complicated to shoot.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 13 November 2014 19:41 (nine years ago) link

The Newbridge spot also suffers somewhat because Jon Wurster is one of the funniest human beings alive on the radio but his presence in the infomercial is like actors who made the awkward transition from silents to the talkies. Something is lost in translation because he doesn't work the medium with the same magic.

I love the rest of the Best Show but could never get jazzed about the S&W stuff. I guess I just don't find Wurster that funny? A few of them I enjoyed but usually I found them kind of tedious. Maybe it helps to be fluent in Philly/Jersey things.

I always looked forward to Seven Second Delay WAY more than Best Show when I listened to a lot of FMU. It was good sometimes but I didn't feel the strong attachment to it a lot of people did.

There are definitely some shining star moments that would work for the uninitiated, but The Best Show definitely rewarded the superfans. So many of the Wurster calls in later years were all about the worldbuilding and ridiculously stupid callbacks. But I totally get that it isn't for everybody. Aside from a few choice calls here and there, I don't think I've sold a single person on it yet.

after one episode, big time hollywood fl kinda sucked

also OMG at all those new shows that all sound fucking horrible

BAD GUYS – Design. Marketing. Looking fresh to death. These are things that are lost on modern-day terrorists, but one man is going to change the game forever. Bad Guys is a quarter-hour animated series about a bombastic, megalomaniac terrorist and his upstart terrorist organization; and their quest for global domination. World Governments and Fashionistas your days are numbered. Created by Paul Scheer (Fresh Off the Boat, The League) and Nick Giovannetti, produced by Bento Box.
UNTITLED MILLION DOLLAR EXTREME PROJECT – A live-action quarter-hour sketch show in an almostpresentday postapocalyptic nightmare world. Created by Million Dollar Extreme.
NEIGHBOR’S HOUSE – Mr. Neighbor’s House is a children’s show hosted by Brian Huskey (Childrens Hospital, Veep). He’s like any other host of kids programming, except that he is barely able to contain the suppressed rage boiling underneath his quiet demeanor. From the safe confines of his home, he throws to various “educational” vignettes: puppets, animation, stop motion, spoken word and mixed medium elements that all blend together into one 15 minute show… that is NOT for kids. Created by Huskey, Jason Mantzoukas (Childrens Hospital, The League), and Jesse Falcon, who also serve as executive producers with Rob Corddry (Childrens Hospital, Hot Tub Time Machine).
BALLMASTRZ 9669 – Thousands of years in the future no one cares about traditional sports anymore. The only game that matters is THE GAME, and the new breed of heroes that play it: BALLMASTRZ. Inside giant battle arenas the size of a small city, teams of Ballmastrz face off against each other using their own hyper-creative artificially intelligent combat weapons to attack, defend, and score. These are the BALLS. Obstacles and challenges test the physical, mental, and psychological limits of the players while entertaining the masses. The player or team that masters their Ball will master The Game in the most spectacular action sport ever played. This quarter-hour animated series is created by Christy Karacas (Superjail!) and produced by Titmouse.
APOLLO GAUNTLET – Trapped in another world, a cop from Earth can finally fight crime the way he wants after acquiring talking magical gauntlets. Animated quarter-hour pilot created by Myles Langlois and produced by Six Point Harness.
BUBBLEGOOSE AND JUICE – Two best friends, a neurotic “Bubblegoose” and slacker “Juice” sharing a tiny no bedroom apartment as they try to maneuver through an unpredictable, supernatural, bizarro world, while still keeping up with the latest kicks. This quarter-hour animated pilot is created by Carl Jones (Black Dynamite).
HOT STREETS – FBI Agent Mark Branski and his partner David French investigate supernatural phenomena, secretly aided by his niece and her cowardly dog, Chubbie Webbers. There will be alien invasions, government conspiracies, monster infestations, and more. This quarter-hour animated pilot is created by Brian Wysol, with Seth Green, Matt Senreich, John Harvatine IV, and Eric Towner (Robot Chicken), Justin Roiland (Rick and Morty) and Wysol serving as executive producers. Produced by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios.
CREATACEOUS CALIGULA – Los Angeles has been crushed by a title wave of radiated water. From the depths of the La Brea tar pits comes out a gang of dinosaur freaks led by a T-Rex Caligula. They want to take over mutant Gross Angeles and destroy anything in their way. This quarter-hour animated pilot is created by JJ Villard (King Star King) and produced by Titmouse.
DOBLE FRIED – Doble Fried is a 6-pack of carnival freaks who run a low-rent amusement park smack drab on the border of Mexico and Not-Mexico. Whether it’s 4:20, beer-thirty, or crazy clown time, these dudes are constantly trying to scam money and score lady lizard honey. It’s a rickety roller coaster ride from the deep fried, clogged heartland of our failure. This quarter-hour animated pilot is created by Matt Furie and produced by PFFR.
FISTHEAD – The relationship between two brothers is put to the test, as one, a loose-cannon action hero with a fist for a head, indiscriminately destroys not only villains, but his normal brother’s life as well. This quarter-hour animated series is created by Sean Glaze and Chris Prynoski, and produced by Titmouse.
OMG! EARTH – OMG! Earth is a quarter-hour stop-motion animated comedy series featuring small plastic action figures going on larger-than-life adventures in the real world. The show takes place against a backdrop of all the classic adventure environments, including the old west, the deep blue sea, and even the final frontier! The pilot is created by John Harvatine IV and Eric Towner, Ashley Arechiga, and Bradley Schaffer, with Harvatine and Towner as executive producers with Seth Green and Matt Senreich (Robot Chicken), Arechiga, and Schaffer as co-executive producers. Produced by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios.
THE POUND HOLE – The Pound Hole is Adult Swim’s first ever late night dance party; a contemporary Soul Train. Think The Grind meets Project X, where DJ Douggpound (played by Doug Lussenhop) remixes both the audio and visuals of this club into surreal, and sometimes violent, but always danceable situations. The Pound Hole is a live-action quarter-hour pilot created by Daniel Weidenfeld (China, IL), developed by Weidenfeld and Lussenhop (Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Portlandia), and directed by The Daniels, the VMA award-winning directing duo of DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s Turn Town For What video.

There's a Parasyte anime in 2015?
The animation itself is a bit lackluster, but they updated it a little bit to match the times - the main kid is listening to music on his phone, he uses the internet to try to figure out what the parasyte is, etc. Unfortunately, this also means DUBSTEP ACTION MUZAK for the first fight scene.

Aqua Teen or Tom Goes to the Mayor... easy to forget how truly fucking bizarre TGTTM was in 2004, clouded by Tim & Eric's success and immense influence on the last decade in comedy, their style has been imitated and aped so much that it's not as unsettling or jarring as it was pre-Awesome Show... Aqua Teen is just a great cartoon.

flappy bird, Thursday, 9 November 2017 19:10 (six years ago) link

Re "ban adult cartoons" I have this vague sense that there might be some kind of fucking culture wars going on over whether you like the pickle cartoon or the horse cartoon and I hope I never find out whether my instinct is correct

fwiw I enjoy both of those adult cartoons and am not going to click on the ilx thread for either but R&M is basically empty calories & so doesn't even approach South Park ito being politically rancid yet seems to have earned the ire of South Park fans for lacking a moral centre or something, BH I see all these earnest posts on fb about a show about depression and but my main takeaway is Jesus fucking Christ guys stop showing the dog fucking the woman

Again they're both good imo. As DJP said, king of the hill is even better. I'm not actually sure what the adult cartoons post has to do with rape culture, which lets agree is bigger than that

Watching clips of the more gruesome cartoons like King Star King, Superjail, JJ Villard's Fairy Tales and I've been really inspired by how gruesome and nasty they are (although in King Star King the mostly voicelessness of the sex workers, the bunny grinding a woman's face into the ground and Molestro was testing me a bit*) and I like that blink n' you'll miss it stuff and how often some of it flies in the face of the idea of a very fixed character model and doesn't worry about characters looking daft or ugly.

Was kind of pleased to see that Allison Schulnik and Hellen Jo are fans of Villard. I hadn't seen their work in a while and I think Schulnik is one of the best artists alive today.

*not surprising when I was checking out Villard and all those awesomely gross cartoonists on instagram that Johnny Ryan is friends with them all.
