We weren't allowed to see A Christmas Story when I was little. We watched a few minute of it and my dad turned it off saying, "What is this trash?!" When I eventually saw the movie, I realized it was just about a family being dysfunctional at Christmas time - so much like my own was! I guess it was a little too realistic...

I want to try and watch a Christmas movie every day in december, like an advent thing.

Anyone recommend some obscure ones? Don't mind if they're not entirely based around Christmas, at least set at the same time will do.

Ste, Friday, 24 November 2017 16:34 (eight years ago)

I see no-one's mentioned Britcom Nativity! yet in this thread. Not obscure exactly, but well worth watching. Probably my second favourite Christmas film after Elf, in fact.

heaven parker (anagram), Friday, 24 November 2017 16:44 (eight years ago)

Someone on Letterboxd has compiled an exhaustive list of Christmas movies that is currently 1512 titles long.

Just looking at the 112 films on the list that I have apparently seen, some of these are really iffy--like, I'm sure there actually are Christmas-set scenes in The Godfather, Annie Hall, Metropolitan, Clueless and Grand Illusion, but a) damned if I can remember most of them, and b) you'd hardly call them Christmas movies on the basis of these scenes.

Anyway, my recommendation (on this list, and not yet mentioned here) would be Mon Oncle Antoine, a lovely Quebecois coming-of-age film from 1971. My assumption would be that it is not as well regarded elsewhere as it is here in Canada, but it is in the Criterion Collection and in Roger Ebert's "The Great Movies" series. Set entirely around Christmas--the main action climaxes on Christmas Eve, as I recall--and even if its not a Christmas Movie in the It's a Wonderful Life/Christmas Vacation sense, it has a very distinctly wintery vibe that should fit the bill.

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Friday, 24 November 2017 17:21 (eight years ago)

My personal favorite Christmas-adjacent movies and TV: The Thin Man, Scrooged, Bad Santa (destroy with extreme prejudice Bad Santa 2), and Hogfather.

I've got a DVD compiling several silent-era Christmas shorts, but I put it on in the background the last time I hosted Christmas, rather than watch it. That day I was amused, or something, to find the Applegate Bacon Yule Log playing on my cable provider's public access channel.

GetTV used to rerun Johnny Staccato; I'd like to see the episode "The Unwise Men" again.

Okay, but we're going to need a definite decision on TV series episodes, music videos, and online original content.

Anne Hedonia (j.lu), Friday, 4 October 2019 14:59 (six years ago)

I have a cousin whose house we would visit every Christmas Eve when he and I and would retire to the basement during the lull in family time to watch things he had been discovering like Dolemite movies -this is basically his job nowadays-so in some way I have an expanded view of what an Xmas movie is which I will try not to foist upon the thread.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 4 October 2019 18:13 (six years ago)

Channel 50 on freeview is already showing 24/7 Christmas movies and have been for 3 weeks. But they are nothing you've ever heard of but are mostly cheap American TV movies. Christmas Oranges. Santa's Boot Camp. Twelve Dogs Of Christmas. Elf-man.

koogs, Friday, 4 October 2019 18:24 (six years ago)

I like the idea of making TV specials eligible. The Rankin/Bass Rudolph and Frosty specials are as canonical at this point as It's a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street. Individual Christmas episodes of TV series might be a bit trickier, but I'll be interested to see what people will nominate (trying to think of great Christmas episodes of shows right now and I'm not coming up with much; I suppose the original Simpsons Christmas special is important, but I don't think its a particularly great episode of the show).

Other visual media? Not sure what else is popular. Maybe the Bowie/Crosby music video?

Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Friday, 4 October 2019 18:35 (six years ago)

yeah tv specials & tv movies should count
i dunno about music videos tho, that might muddy the waters

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 4 October 2019 19:11 (six years ago)

Maybe the Bowie/Crosby music video?

Strictly speaking, that's an excerpt from a TV special. But delving into the many covers of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," for example, could be daunting.

Another question likely to arise: How strictly are we defining "Christmas" (and would the Star Wars Holiday Special be eligible)?

And some very good movies (Meet John Doe and It Happened on 5th Avenue) that have been advertised as xmas movies but were mostly only tangentially so.

Oh, also saw Curse if the Cat People for the first time! Also magnificent!

Rep. Cobra Commander (R-TX) (Old Lunch), Thursday, 23 December 2021 17:38 (four years ago)

Wait wait wait, between its absence from these new lists and the results of the holiday movie poll, I'm wondering...do y'all not rate Remember the Night? Preston Sturges! Stanwyck and MacMurray! Beulah Bondi! It's genuinely affecting! And really really good!

Rep. Cobra Commander (R-TX) (Old Lunch), Thursday, 23 December 2021 17:44 (four years ago)

Solid!

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 December 2021 17:46 (four years ago)

I watched that for the first time this year too & was similarly blown away, it went right into my top tier of xmas movies. almost certain i remember morbs speaking kindly of it once or twice over the years.

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Thursday, 23 December 2021 17:48 (four years ago)

I'll probably watch it but who knows

Is Blast of Silence an Xmas movie, have yet to see it. I loved Christmas in Connecticut when I first discovered it, then was disappointed to be unable to find anyone that rated it apart from Morrissey. Trying to remember the name of the New Orleans noir with Gene Kelly and Deanna Durbin, maybe I already posted upthread.

I see that I went and saw because Dr. Morbius tipped me off: Film noir: your favourites.

Set in NYC during the holidays. Your definition of "Xmas movie" may vary.

I saw Christmas Evil a few weeks ago. what a fantastic yet fucked up Xmas horror

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Thursday, 23 December 2021 21:28 (four years ago)

i was expecting it to be good ol' slasher-kitsch fun like Silent Night Deadly Night (which I love), but its sooo much weirder than that

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Thursday, 23 December 2021 21:33 (four years ago)

I might give that one a little watch tomorrow evening after my hubs goes to bed.

I'm not a stickler for this because people eating turkey in a formal setting is exceedingly strange to me.

What about eating sushi on the toilet?

Ernst Lubitsch's The Shop Around The Corner is a romantic comedy/christmas movie 4 life.

I didn't realize until I watched it for the first time last night, but the conclusion of Pandora's Box takes place on Christmas Eve. I'm not a particular fan of silent movies but I recommend this if you're living destitute in an attic with broken windows and snow coming in, and you need some cheer.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 24 December 2021 17:19 (four years ago)

watched Last Christmas which was on BBC2 a couple of days ago and it was ok. nice shots of christmassy london but perhaps a too much Wham on the soundtrack.

interestingly the script was by emma thompson and bryony kimmings.

koogs, Friday, 24 December 2021 17:25 (four years ago)

It's supposed to be a George Michael jukebox musical tho I agree that aspect kinda goes under the radar for much of it.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 24 December 2021 17:34 (four years ago)

music seemed unconnected to the action, felt more like they'd licenced the title track and got a job lot of others thrown in.

“most of these are towels”

johnny crunch, Saturday, 25 December 2021 02:24 (four years ago)

what the hell

David Johansen's New York Dolls bandmate Arthur Kane was sent into a jealous rage after seeing Johansen's prominent role in Scrooged. Kane reacted by beating his wife, and attempting suicide by jumping from a third-story window

johnny crunch, Saturday, 25 December 2021 02:55 (four years ago)

wth, indeed. Had he missed the previous half decade's inexplicable love affair with Buster Poindexter?

But yes, holds up very well. We try to watch it every year.

daughter has decided that our Christmas Day movie this year will be As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty. guessing there may be Christmas content somewhere in the 288 minute runtime.

i never watched Christmas Vacation all the way through until this year! loved vacation (still do) but this always seemed like a shadow of that

first part always annoyed me & i’d turn it off bc it was just clark getting hit with ladders & floorboards

but once they do xmas eve dinner it definitely got WAY more enjoyable for me
i had a good time!

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 23 December 2022 22:37 (three years ago)

one year passes...

NUTCRACKER on Hulu is kinda nice imo?

Directed by David Gordon Green, stars Ben Stiller & four irl kid brothers (who feel like alternate universe Hanson brothers)

Has the vibes of an old DGG indie, like Undertow & George Washington, but put through a lighter feelgood filter - and Stiller does what he does best - uptight guy in a weird setting trying to pretend his uptightness is fine

idk i was pleasantly surprised by how not-terrible it was & the kids are cool
