(also the campaigning thread)
We're back with the FIFTH generation console games poll! Time to cast your ballot! Games were nominated from the Sony Playstation, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Color, and 3DO. Sorry, PC-Fx/Neo Geo Pocket/Virtual Boy, you were snubbed again.
Because why not, instead of a 20-game max ballot, I've upped it to 40!!! THIS ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT MEAN YOU NEED 40 GAMES. If you only wanna do 5 or 3 or 1 even, that's great! WE NEVER GET MANY BALLOTS FOR VIDEO GAME STUFF so anything I can do to encourage you to cast one, I will do. What do you need? Tell me!!!
I'm using a similar system to last time, you can make a weighted, unweighted or hybrid ballot...
- Weighted. You can vote for up to 40 games, in order, and they will receive 80, 78, 76... 6, 4, 2 points respectively.- Unweighted. You can vote for up to 40 games, in any order, and they will all receive 42 points.- Hybrid. The first games will receive weighted points (80, 78, 76...) and anything after the "weighted" section will receive the remaining points, split equally. Don't worry, the spreadsheet handles this.
The spreadsheet for ballot-making! Select File -> Make a Copy to have your very own.
Consoles are not listed on the ballot, but you can check this separate spreadsheet to see what it's listed as (comment here or in the spreadsheet if i've screwed something up and I'll fix it. Lots of those PS1/Saturn games are listed as one console when they're probably on both.)
Once you have your ballot, send it to ps2ilx at gmail (I prefer you just copy-paste the ballot text! sending google sheets is annoying and complicated) and I'll start adding them up! Deadline set for November 8th which will almost certainly end up getting pushed but if MOST of you can hit this deadline it'll make my life MUCH EASIER. There's already stuff in the ballot to show how it works, just erase that and do yours.

honestly, i had a bit of an *tim rogers deep voice* _emotional experience_ while making my ballot. i went to wikipedia and sorted the PS1 and N64 releases by date of release in NA. and with the PS1, especially, it was like being teleported back to 1996. somehow i got my dad to buy me a playstation soon after it came out, when it was like fucking $500!! i remember asking him, with guilt, to buy me the $19.99 memory card on top of everything else, so i could save the game. he did it. as much as he is not cool at all, he was always ok with buying me games, i gotta give him that.
anyway, because i was 12 or 13 and i had subscriptions to gamepro and pc gamer, i was very much connected to the playstation scene and the game pipeline, from the beginning. i recognized almost all the games for first several dozen rows of releases, and rented many of them at movie gallery.
i know this experience isn't unique, but for me it whisked me straight back into that time, and all the other shitty stuff that was going on around me at the time, and what the town was like, and also being 13 and like 4'10 still, and getting driven around by your mom, all that stuff. it felt like an instant timewarp, it was almost disorienting, and almost painful.
then i realized i was only looking at the A-M list of ps1 games, and did the whole thing again with the N-Z list, reliving the history, remembering a game like Loaded, which i had completely forgotten about, but yet played a TON somehow
― president of my cat (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:16 (three years ago) link
sorry, Loaded was a bad example to give right there, as it was in the A-M list of course. but i just mean in general it was very weird to remember a game like Loaded and imagine sitting in that damp basement with the silverfish always crawling down the walls, playing fucking Loaded

I did mine. Surprising #1.
Two write-ins: The New Tetris, and Sin And Punishment
Funny: I was in Japan in 2005 and I was balefully eyeing the extremely expensive copy of Radiant Silvergun in a game store there, and they had Sin And Punishment right next to it (same developer) and the clerk convinced me it was a great game, worth buying, I'd never heard of it, I took it home, took a hot knife to the "don't play this outside of Japan" cartridge tabs and yeah that game is amazing

My extremely basic ballot is almost entirely N64-slanted. Not to say I had no experience with contemporaneous PS1 games; I have fond memories of hanging with my best junior high bud watching him play through FFVIII (yes, 8), and trying my hand at the occasional Jet Moto or Bushido Blade match, but I never had any deep, first-hand experiences with PS1 games that weren't ported to other consoles; your Residents Evil and Tonys Hawk, etc. I often wonder if my tastes these days would be very different had we been a PS household.

I did a bunch of PS1 games at the time, and enjoyed them-- weird things like Siphon Filter and Driver were enjoyable. Going back in present-day to PS1 is less rewarding than N64, though... I still really enjoy, say, Banjo-Kazooie but have no idea where I had the patience for FF7 and Metal Gear Solid when I was young

so my experience with this gen was my first three years or so of college and one of my roomies at the time was a guy from Thailand who shipped over something like 5 or 6 hundred bootleg Playstation and Saturn discs so we played A LOT of random games. BUT! I never had an N64 so I'm completely shut out there.

can we do custom rankings, as long as we stay within:- 1680 or less total ballot points- 40 or less individual games- 80 or less maximum weight for any game(s)?
like could i submit a ballot with 10 games only and give them all 80, or 5 80s and 3 50s and 2 10s or whatever? or does this make it harder for tallying?
― chihuahuau, Sunday, 25 October 2020 10:39 (three years ago) link
important note, fgti had three write-ins, not two -- the other is einhander. i am noting this because einhander is awesome and i can't believe we forgot it and i might need to change my ballot now that i have remembered it!
also i will note that i replayed mgs not that long ago (i replayed 1, 2, 3, 4 and PW before 5 came out because i live like that) and it held up imo! is gamecube emulation up to snuff these days? i've wanted to try twin snakes for a while...

i'd like there to only be one game at 80 because i don't wanna do split first-place votes, but i think i'd be okay with doing "tiers" after that. but if you have less than 40 games you'd have less than 1640 points, if that makes sense? sorry my brain hasnt caught up today (or for the past week lol).

Neo Geo games were stupid expensive. I think $250 a pop! They were essentially just standup cabinet boards. Mostly they seem to have retained or increased in value.https://videogamecritic.com/neogeoinfo.htm

i never bought any 3DO games beyond the five that came with my hand-me-down (the four i mentioned and myst) so idk. famously of course the console itself was Stupid expensive.
obviously star control 2 was the highlight. in the 1990s, if you had described star control 2 to me, i would have immediately given you all the money i had (eight dollars).
― difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 27 October 2020 03:34 (three years ago) link
i wish i'd had star control 2 at like age 13 with no other fresh games in my hand - just like a summer to completely sink into understanding it and exploring it. woulda been real satisfying and imagination-filling i think. but by the time i played it i was in my 20s, it was an abandonware type download, i got real into it for a couple weeks or something but never drilled in to get good at it or really get the plot to come together. sigh...this generation has a weird divide for me in that way, cause the big N64 launch titles i got to know in the mid-90s thru one of those teenaged summers - my brother had an n64 and he was home between college and grad school, and he and my sister and I played a TON of mario kart and star fox multiplayer, just an absolute blast, some of our funnest times together. and on my own i had mario 64 to really tackle cause my brother had already played most of it i think.whereas the playstation games i really know, i got to know like 3 or 4 or 5 years later - late high school and college. plenty of time for great attachments to form and i logged a LOT of SOTN, Soul Reaver and Tony Hawk time in the dorms. they're awesome and they'll rank high in my ballot. but my relationship to games was just very different already at 18 than it was at say 7 through 15. my fondness for Bust-A-Groove stems from one weekend closer to 16, spent at my out of state nerd buddy's place - playing that, watching Pulp Fiction for the first time, and also experiencing SOTN also, lol. havin a blast.

i'm kinda rambling here. there was still lots of great gaming and social gaming in my college years, and in bursts later on. but there's just nothing quite like being crazy into a console game (or anything) as a kid with free time, and the N64 is the last system i really encountered as an asterisk-free Kid

to be sure, SC2 has a huge amount of empty space in it and most of the actual button-pushing gameplay isn't what you would necessarily call fun. (i definitely played a lot of multiplayer "super melee!" with neighborhood kids and it ruled, or did once we'd agreed to outlaw the Chmrr, but fighting the twitchy deadeye AI for the right to not have to reload a save almost never ruled.) it's just a dialogue-based adventure game with a very slow interface, like a sierra that kills you even more. but the writing and character art is real joyous.
― difficult listening hour, Tuesday, 27 October 2020 05:34 (three years ago) link
a sustained-exclusive-attention game though definitely. you need to take pages of notes. you need to draw a map of "quasi-space".
star fox 64 on the other hand will never stop being fun; it takes 45 minutes to play and you get to put your initials in at the end. that's what should run you neo geo prices.

fgti recently posted on the thread "favorite space game" about SC2:
The 5th Gen poll reminded me of the game Star Control 2 and I had a huge rush of long-unaccessed memories flood into my brain. It has to be in my top 5 of all time... the music, the melee, the genuinely funny plot, I still feel creepy feelings about the VUX (and the mysterious Androsynth genocide), the Druuge and their slave trade, and the bizarre Mycon. My first play through was mildly stressful, watching the Pkunk try and reunite with the Yehat once, twice and then finally a third time and I was deprived of my favourite melee ship and had to restartThe second time was enormously stressful... I was a diligent miner and took my time until the Kzer-Za sphere of influence suddenly started waning and winked out and the Kohr-Ah began their cleansing-- again, a restartI definitely needed a walkthrough and definitely used a "here are where the good planets are" guide... there are few games that have enthralled me as so deeply as this one― flamboyant goon tie included, Saturday, October 24, 2020 2:28 PM bookmarkflaglink

for sure means something that this rhapsodic post describes being twice forced to restart many hours in. also that-- at least in the 3DO version-- the "here are where the good planets are" guide was in the back of the manual, as if it would have been indecent for even a 90s video game developer to try and charge you for that information.
i too still think about the androsynth.

Bah I would type for hours about how eerie the disappearance of the Androsynth was, it's like having the Romulans suddenly go missing and there is no explanation
But yeah the thing I liked most about SC2 was the music. The game came out in 1992, when video game music was just making the transition from CMF (Adlib-created FM-synth polyphony) to MOD (digital lo-res sampling over four tracks). MODs were generally (at the time) confined to demos from the Finnish scene, but SC2 had an entire MOD score which was wild. MODs were such a revelation. The inventiveness of the composers of this music still blows my nerd heart to pieces:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlOxf9a2Eik
^ the composer of this track (18 years old in 1991) would later go on to form Poets Of The Fall, a Finnish band that apparently has six #1 albums in that country over the past twenty years
― flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 30 October 2020 20:05 (three years ago) link
Yeah anyway the music for SC2, entirely created in this format, is just... great. It's great!

I'm probably more invested in this than the next one, despite having every major console from then that I didn't despise. I think it just hit me right - I moved up to the city and into a flat with three friends in late 1996, and we got a PlayStation because they were cool and could do cool things.
It's probably the last time in my life that I uncritically accepted something as So Cool (checks release date for Pulp Fiction - yeah, we're good). And of course it helped that it wasn't the first generation of games for it - we got Tekken 2, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy VII, Tomb Raider, WipeOut 2097 (not just 100 years ahead, but 101! And licensed tunes! And Red Bull!). It genuinely felt like every month some new future of games was being opened up.

fgti otm about the sc2 music: the eerie interplanetary navigation, all that time spent groovin in hyperspace. the various alien species' motifs.
played some colony wars, v fun but caught in a hinterland i think, kept equidistant from the arcade splashiness of starfox64 (by the limitations of the ps1's grafix) and the hardcore shield-allocation joys of wing commander/xwing/tie fighter (by there just not being enough buttons on the controller lol). didn't play much tho.

― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 19:03 (three years ago) link
you could also use them as part of a FMV that takes 45 seconds to load and 10 seconds to watch
― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 19:04 (three years ago) link
i wish i could recall the exact moment such FMVs went from gorgeous, rare and delicious treasures to absolute annoyances. sort of a repeat of what previously happened with snippets of digitized speech in the late floppy-disk era.i remember them still feeling special in Tomb Raider, and i'm pretty sure i knew a guy who taped all the Final Fantasy VII ones onto VHS to more easily appreciate them...
― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 19:26 (three years ago) link
honestly, i think for me that moment was somewhere in the middle of playing FFVII, the first time around. at school my friends would be like "have you seen the freaking knights of the round summon???", and even though i hadn't seen it yet, i knew that i'd end up seeing one trillion times and would get sick of it
― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 19:31 (three years ago) link
lol yeah that's so indulgent and ridiculous. not on my friend's tape though - that was specifically the prerendered plot-point cutscenes iirc.
― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 19:50 (three years ago) link
oh of course, that's right. the summons weren't FMV, they were rendered. in that case, i do not remember the moment that FMVs became bad! because i was totally into those pre-rendered cutscenes, haha
― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 19:55 (three years ago) link
God I hate cut scenes usually
― big man on scampus (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 19:59 (three years ago) link
MGS2 was the first time my response to a cut scene was "come on tae fuck"
― Politically homely (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:02 (three years ago) link
i'm wondering if i ever really did burn out on them, or if i just stopped playing new games around 2001! ha. they definitely stopped feeling like special must-haves in the mid-90s though... like i had almost no urge to check out games like Wing Commander III/IV which were very much sold on their "cinematic" offerings.
but then again, Final Fantasy IX is on my ballot based on my experiences getting halfway through it circa 2011, and is there almost entirely for the cutscenes and the prerendered backdrops. the game eventually pissed me off enough that i quit, but i remember it as a really lovely, satisfying set of environments to be in.
― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:02 (three years ago) link
in the ps1 final fantasy days we had a lot more patience for... everything. i have strong memories of hanging out with my friend while he ran in little circles on a tiny island in ffvii because the monsters there gave good materia xp
― TRANCED INTO RADIOACTIVE PUREE (Will M.), Wednesday, 4 November 2020 20:06 (three years ago) link

exactly -- if you played civ 2 on the console go for it, but computer games are just so tricky to place on the timeline fairly that it'll have to be another poll in like 2044 or something
