Voting is NOW OPEN for the ILX 2019 film poll: anything that had its first theatrical screening in your area during 2019 is eligible.
Annoyed that we’re rolling now, when you still have too many films to catch up on from last year that are now on home viewing formats, or haven't been released in your country yet? Hey, what better chance than the next three weeks if you’re quarantined, or socially isolating outside of work hours, due to the plague. (And anything you can’t squeeze in now, you can be motivated to catch up on in time for the 2010s poll later in the year. If we don’t die and internet still exists.)
Send ballots to i l x polls ter [at] g ma il [dot] c o m by April 3rd.
MAXIMUM 35 votesMINIMUM 10 votes
Votes are weighted. Please send your lists with your TOP choice at the TOP, but do not number your choices. (It's very annoying for formatting.) If you're voting for a non-English-speaking film that has a commonly-accepted English title, by all means include the original title in brackets, but type the English title first. (This is also to help with tallying, and does not otherwise reflect the pollrunner's preferences.)
SIDE POLL:
You can also vote for up to FIVE worst new-release-somewhere films from 2019. This is not mandatory.

I'll have a hard time getting to 10--didn't see as many new films last year, felt like I didn't like as many, and catching up (in theaters, at least) looks like a non-starter. I guess I'll just fill out the second half of the list with things I saw and thought were okay (i.e., another vote for The Irishman!).

unbalanced year with 2 movies I'll cherish for the rest of my life (once upon a time & the image book), 2 fucking killer movie (uncut gems & the lighthouse), 2 compelling reactionary movies (joker & richard jewell) some more very good ones (beach bum, family, pain and glory, parasite, the farewell), and then tons of movies I admired but didn't respond to... little women, portrait of a lady on fire, midsommar (sort of)... and then a lot of just solid stuff like ad astra, knives out, booksmart, hustlers, honey boy, honeyland, detective pikachu...
I thought her smell, high life, the last black man in san francisco, bombshell, and us were the biggest disappointments. oh and the new assayas (like bad 2010s woody allen, in a way it filled a void)

If they showed in your area in 2019, or if you didn't vote for them last year but still want to, go for it. But yeah, they are 2018 movies in my book. Still, I won't complain if they show up on the list instead of, like, Ford v Ferrari :)

I simplified the eligibility criteria too much: if something didn't screen theatrically in your area but was available to you (eg High Flying Bird had a festival screening, Dolemite Is My Name had a limited release, I Heard You Paint Houses had festival showings and single-chain unlimited release), it still counts. Basically if you think it has a chance of anyone else voting for it, it's eligible!

does mubi rotate through just 30 different films a month with frequent expirations? I’ve been looking for a way to see Bait as well as Bacurau, but when I look at what’s showing there I don’t see either of them
― Dan S, Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:25 (four years ago) link
It had it's world premiere in 2019, it's absolutely a 2019 film. But did anyone here see it in 2019? How many has seen it yet? For strategic reasons, it's probably better to save it for next year?
― Frederik B, Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:28 (four years ago) link
Bacurau has only just gone up on Mubi. Bait requires a BFI subscription, which, having served its purpose, I may cancel, after ascertaining what else is available

We saw that the other night. Was a horribly-written dull mess for 70 minutes but the final hour redeemed it somewhat. Director is still young and clearly has ideas, and it was beautiful to look at throughout.

Long Day’s Journey Into Night has a very enigmatic story. It feels similar to Kaili Blues with but additional dimensions. It is surprisingly romantic.

For people who are having trouble getting to an enthusiastic ten:
Break your ballot into the would-be-numbered section
Then after a para break, fill it out with a B-features section of things you liked but don't consider top-ten material, and I'll give these ten points each
And if you really want to throw some bones around, go ahead and include a C-tier for one-pointers.

I'll vote for what others vote for, and a lot of ilxors are from the US, but can we drop the idea that the US release date matters? It's a South Korean director, and his films always premiere in Europe.

If it didn't matter everyone would consider Sorry We Missed You which just got digitally released in the US, and which is absolutely and obviously a 2019 world/uk release. But it does, and the US ilxors will consider it for 2020.

Films can be voted for in multiple years, as evidenced by the fact that films keep placing in multiple years. This is a) fine and b) fun.
― Dollarmite Is My Name (sic), Tuesday, 31 March 2020 09:04 (four years ago) link
I don't think it's that 'fun' that non-US film systematically places lower on these lists due to the parochialism of US ilxors.

Fred, I get what you're saying, but no matter where you draw the lines there will be people who don't have access to films you want to vote for. Non-US films don't always march in date-solidarity either! Every ILX poll process puts great films on my radar. Surely that's the point, and not what outranks what.
― Cherish, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 14:36 (four years ago) link
That's not what I'm talking about! To be clear, I don't begrudge anyone voting for anything they have seen. I'm just tired of the US parochial bullshit where if it didn't premiere in the US, then it didn't count. We do this a few months into the next year, so there's plenty of time for 2019 films to get a 2020 US release, and if a voter is too narrow-minded to then check them out and vote for them, then fuck them.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 15:03 (four years ago) link
Works both ways though. Plenty of 2018 films didn’t get a UK release until well into 2019, no doubt some of these will get votes.

I plan on watching Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which got a 2020 US release, now that it is available for streaming. Other 2019 films that had a 2020 US release - Sorry We Missed You, The Whistlers, Bacurau, I Was at Home But, The Wild Goose Lake, Beanpole, Corpus Christi, Bait, Zombi Child - are harder to get, and at least for me they require new subscriptions or downloading new apps on my TV. Had to look that up--got something similar in my e-mail. Make sure you get it right, everyone.

We're doing some last-minute watching today - hopefully it'll still be fine to submit this evening. Please advise if otherwise and we'll hasten

I've managed to list 34 films, so I'm nearly there.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 15:35 (four years ago) link
gonna send a ballot now

That was a reply to Whiney's already-answered question - your note was just a gentle tease about yr late profession.
All votes received should have confirmation emails now.

I just voted :) My lists are so weird every year. I don't know why it's so much harder for me to make a film list than an album list. Hoping to see my #1 on the list, though it's a longshot.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 19:09 (four years ago) link
(xpost) That's good--I actually almost said "There will be a quiz" in my post, and was also going to mention that I should get extra credit for handing in my assignment early.
― clemenza, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 19:19 (four years ago) link
We had 32 voters for 2018, 28 last year, and 25 received so far this year. If the imagent household only files further ballots today, thta's pretty good attrition.
― donald failson (sic), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 19:42 (four years ago) link
I was thinking of submitting a ballot, but went through the rym list and had only seen these films
Miles Davis: Birth of the CoolToy Story 4The Lego Movie 2: The Second PartJokerLeaving NeverlandPokémon: Detective Pikachu
I fear my short ballot would only make the list worse, but will be following the rollout to get some recommendations of better things I should be watching.

Just accepted that Color Out Of Space and Bacurau are 2020 so I'm sorry if you voted for those things, I do love them though and they were high up my ballot before I cut them

It's a 2019 release but whatever. I didn't see it and vote for it either
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 21:53 (four years ago) link
Wild Goose Lake just not among my top 35. Great colors, though. Fun use of umbrella.

I recently watched Uniform and Black Coal, Thin Ice, and am interested in seeing The Wild Goose Lake
― Dan S, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 22:42 (four years ago) link
How is Uniform?
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 22:50 (four years ago) link
it was very low budget production but I liked the story of a laundry worker using an unclaimed uniform to impersonate a police officer.
― Dan S, Tuesday, 7 April 2020 23:00 (four years ago) link
thought Black Coal, Thin Ice was really good
