Hmm, he said, having seen the first episode. I like it, don't mind the tonal shift in general, but this was definitely a laying-the-grounds episode first and foremost.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 January 2020 02:42 (four years ago) link

Agreed, though I was more let down with the second half of the episode. It felt like it was trying to cram in as many callbacks to TNG as it could to establish its Trek bona fides, so it was mired in the past (even if it's meant to be the leitmotif).

I wonder about Data's poker hand, though.

I always thought it was strange that Picard with his French history and English accent would require to specify that the tea was "hot", like if he didn't say so, the computer would respond "do you mean hot tea... or iced tea" in a thick American drawl

Should I watch this? All I heard was that the first episode greatly resembled a certain early S4 episode

Montegays and Capulez (flamboyant goon tie included), Sunday, 26 January 2020 15:47 (four years ago) link

how well do you have to remember TNG?

My understanding is that Picard takes place in the Kelvin timeline of the J.J. Abrams/Alex Kurtzman films and ST:Discovery. Real life licencing legal battles have severed the Kelvin timeline from the E/OG/TNG/DS9/V timeline. So none of the events of 1965-2003 Star Trek occurred in Picard, at least not in the same way.

Picard is perhaps an examination of how different histories change character. Or a vanity project about Patrick Stewart's real life political concerns produced to maintain Viacom's IP.

Darth Bambi (Sanpaku), Sunday, 26 January 2020 16:46 (four years ago) link

My understanding is that Picard takes place in the Kelvin timeline of the J.J. Abrams/Alex Kurtzman films and ST:Discovery.

Wait, aren't these two different timelines entirely?

Kelvin timeline starts with a movie where OG Spock comes in from the 'real' timeline, following the destruction of Romulus. I was under the impression said 'real' timeline is both the timeline of Discovery and Picard, while the Kelvin timeline is just the three nu-Trek movies and any directly associated spinoff media.

I always figured since the replicator fabricates a cup of tea that never needed steeping, it’d give you the most instantly drinkable temperature by default. By specifying “hot,” Picard wants the experience of fresh-steeped tea that must be carefully sipped.

babu frik fan account (mh), Sunday, 26 January 2020 18:29 (four years ago) link

Yeah I guess that makes sense. I just got in my head an idea for a Hitchhiker/TNG spin-off. “Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.” “Share and enjoy!” Data reads Vogon poetry to Spot. Fenchurch teaches Worf to fly and they have an aerial affair. Zaphod becomes assimilated. Deep Thought revises its answer to “Kill Wesley”, with tragic results

mookieproof, Sunday, 26 January 2020 20:54 (four years ago) link

This was pretty ok!

I like the vibe so far - kind of Raymond Chandler in space, with Picard as the dishevelled ‘tec, stumbling from encounter to encounter, endangering his friends and getting lightly beaten up in the process.

I like Pill. The twin and the weirdly accented handsome on the cube ship were... less good.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 27 January 2020 01:14 (four years ago) link

This was okay, I liked that it had the more relaxed tempo of the '80s/'90s series instead of the more modern/actiony vibe of Discovery. I still think it was silly that they had to bring back Brent Spiner for fanservice though, as even the digital manipulation and choice of angles couldn't hide the fact he'd become chubbier and his face had changed with age. I guess his two scenes being dreams made it a bit easier to digest, but still... IIRC it was Spiner himself who wanted Data to die in the TNG movies, as it was obvious he couldn't be playing an ageless android for decades. Well, this episode proves he was right, and his presence here was really superfluous, they could've done the same plot with using only footage from TNG or something.

Tuomas, Monday, 27 January 2020 07:56 (four years ago) link

Also, the references to "The Offpsring" here made me at first excited and then disappointed. Because after seeing that episode, I always wondered why Data wouldn't try to create another daughter after Lal... Obviously losing her was traumatic to him, but in real life people still have kids after losing one, and you'd think traumatic loss wouldn't affect Data to the same extent as with humans? So when they first implied Dahj was his daughter, I was like, cool, he did build another child after all! But then it was revealed Dahj/Soji were only made after Data's death, so the question of why he never wanted another offspring remains. I get it that they didn't want to tie this series too much into old episodes of TNG, but on the other hand, the Picard wouldn't even exist if people weren't nostalgic for that series. So I do hope the following episodes will have some deeper connections to the lore than just fanservicey appearances of TNG actors.

Tuomas, Monday, 27 January 2020 08:06 (four years ago) link

deeper connections to the lore

i see what u did

mookieproof, Monday, 27 January 2020 09:12 (four years ago) link

Haha, that was actually unintentional!

They did seem to refer to Data/Lore with Allison Pill's weird comment about how androids are always made in pairs... Which I don't recall ever being a thing in TNG, IIRC the Soongs built Data to improve on Lore, not because there was some weird rule that you have to build two?

Tuomas, Monday, 27 January 2020 09:45 (four years ago) link

pill seemed to be implying that there was a biological reason for having to grow/build two at once, the ones in question being indistinguishable from human beings down to some level or something

j., Monday, 27 January 2020 10:01 (four years ago) link

Maybe yeah, but it was still a weird comment, because she didn't explain what the reason for building them in pairs was, she just stated it like it was an obvious thing.

Tuomas, Monday, 27 January 2020 10:05 (four years ago) link

if i cared enough, maybe i'd go back and see if it made sense how pill started with 'short answer, impossible; long answer, still impossible' and ended up with 'hey, maybe there's two of them'. also seems bad that a dozen romulan assassins can beam onto the roof of starfleet hq undetected, and the mom's ~slip-up~ mentioning picard was really ham-handed. it's fine, still liked it

mookieproof, Monday, 27 January 2020 15:55 (four years ago) link

Also, the references to "The Offpsring" here made me at first excited and then disappointed. Obviously losing her was traumatic to him, but in real life people still have kids after losing one, and you'd think traumatic loss wouldn't affect Data to the same extent as with humans?

Data got into serious trouble with SF for creating Lal and only avoided punishment because of what ultimately happened to her. And he probably felt that unless he was able to create another android with better odds of survival, he wasn't going to try again.

Also, there's a quick line where Dr. Jurati surmises that the twins were created by Maddox. Don't know if that's meant to throw us off the trail, though.

I really enjoyed this even though 'you can't make new androids without Data/but just a single neuron would do/oh they come in pairs' was all rather convenient - I know TNG was all about the handwavey pseudoscience but unlike Discovery it never fully jettisoned logic just to tell a cool story bro. I hope this doesn't end up going that route.

I think just having a sassy, overqualified Romulan housekeeper question Picard about having all his marbles is all I need to be happy. Though more seriously, it's nice to see that things aren't going to be easy for JL and that other characters are allowed to have their own agendas and personalities.

I'm sure that Starfleet is thrilled about that living arrangement -- and I kind of wonder if some SF intelligence officer thinks that Picard's Romulan friends have turned him.

Also I really liked the Vulcan(?) Commodore.

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Saturday, 1 February 2020 22:35 (four years ago) link

I was a bit confused, was she supposed to be Vulcan or Romulan? Because her mannerisms and the fact that she's running the Federation's secret police (presumably built on the foundation of Section 31?) implied she's Romulan, but OTOH there's no indication the Romulan Free State (or whatever it's called) has joined the Federation.

Tuomas, Sunday, 2 February 2020 11:38 (four years ago) link

One, i think she's more specifically intelligence, not Section 31, since she wears gold (ops/security).

Two, I think she's meant to be or pass as Vulcan, since the first thing we see of her is a box with the IDIC insignia, and her stilted speech sounded more Vulcan to me.

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Sunday, 2 February 2020 16:52 (four years ago) link

Even-numbered episode theory still holding!

It's basically holodeck technology outside of a holodeck.

Best GOT pun I've seen so far is Romulannisters.

The dog fight at the end was confusing because I wasn't sure which was Rios's ship!

rmde @ JL castigating Elrond for killing that Romulan when JL was the one provoking a fight.

Yeah I was enjoying this but that last episode was arse.
The guy Vajayzle (lol) butchered - that was the kid from last season Voyager, right? The other rescued borg kid?
- why didnt they use the same actor for him?
- ditto Bruce Maddox?
- why is this storyline so disjointed? I am struggling to follow it, there are competing motivations flying all over the place and somehow it makes it feel too rapid-paced and yet getting nowhere all at once.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 00:37 (four years ago) link

Poor Marina Sirtis, after nearly 30 years she still can't get dialogue that isn't cringeworthy.

Picard's characterization is really weird! Maybe it's a function of being out of circulation for so long but in his TNG days he would never resort to mockery and sarcasm with someone who was suffering from severe self-doubt, not for cheap lolz. And of course his clapping after Raffi's performance was sooo corny, and not in a TNG way.

Caught up with the last two episodes last night...I mean, I'm all about hanging out in rustic California locations because that's where most of the series have filmed on location anyway, but would chill over pizza anytime with that crew. There's definitely an odd choppiness in the editing, though; I almost wonder if they wouldn't've been better off just having the other stuff be at the start and end of the episode and otherwise just relaxed on Nepenthe. Actress who played the daughter (Kestra?) pretty solid, that's classic awkward/friendly stuff.

Building off of that Tolkien name tweet, BIG subplot all about subcreation, conlang etc. there with the dead son's interests.

Yeah, I've been mostly happy with Picard in that it hasn't reverted to pandering to people nostalgic for TNG (I'm a fan of it too, but couldn't care less about this kind of fanservice), but they finally caved in and did a full episode of it. If it wasn't for Troi and Riker's kid, who was pretty awesome, and her interactions with Soji, this episode would've been completely pointless. Let's just hope this was the last bit of fanservice they had in store and now they can focus on the actual main plot of the series, which still seems pretty interesting, as slow-moving as it is.

not too clear on how our heroes suddenly and magically realized the entire plot, but i guess some stuff happened

I was a bit confused about this too, but then I remembered that in the previous episode, when we saw the stuff Commodore Oh mind-melded into Dr. Jurati's brain, it included visions of the Zhat Vash members going crazy because of the Admonition. So apparently she transferred the whole story of the Zhat Vash into Jurati's brain, not just the ancient warning about synthetic life, and the heroes somehow got her to explain it despite the psychic block Oh placed in her mind. How they got past the block wasn't explained, though.

Tuomas, Sunday, 15 March 2020 11:00 (four years ago) link

But yeah, agree that this was a good episode, a nicely paced "right before the storm" story that revealed the stakes and put all the pieces in motion for the two-parter finale.

Tuomas, Sunday, 15 March 2020 11:03 (four years ago) link

The only thing I didn't like is the revelation that Captain Rios has a history with the androids and the Zhat Vash conspiracy too, even though he was supposedly just a random pilot Musiker happened to know. I get it that they wanted him to have a personal stake in the conflict too, but they could've come up with some other way of doing that, something that wasn't such ridiculous coincidence.

I've read some fan theories that this all ties to the Control plot of Discovery's season 2, and the prophecy seen there of Control destroying organic life in the entire galaxy is what this "someone bad" wants to avoid... I can't imagine they'd want to tie this series so closely to Discovery though, especially since (AFAIK) the plot was being written before Discovery's second season even came out. Apparently Michael Chabon wasn't even allowed to make overt references to DS9's Dominion War, so that it wouldn't confuse viewers not familiar with that series, even though that war is (according to Chabon) the biggest reason why the Federation has become more paranoid and isolationist.

Archaeopteryx Morgan M.D. (Leee), Tuesday, 17 March 2020 14:56 (four years ago) link

Pretty much yeah, except replace Sisko with Odo, and maybe also Martok with Dax.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 17 March 2020 15:35 (four years ago) link

But Kira, Garak, Nog, yeah, those three are such compelling characters and they're given such great arcs that I can't really think anything comparable in other ST series... Maybe Data in TNG.

The scene where Nog stands up to Sisko in his office made me cry more than anything Star Trek related ever has. It's awesome how the DS9 managed to save the Ferengi from TNG's joke species into something so much more.

This felt more like a TNG episode than any of the previous ones. Our team enters a planet where the inhabitants are living in a communal utopia in small location wearing space togas and doing gymnastics on the town square, but turns out one of the leaders is corrupting them, Picard tries to steer them away from the leader with a Picard speech, appealing to their decency, but the evil leader counters him... I mean, it must be an intentional TNG homage, right? No way would the showmakers have had them wear those togas if it wasn't.

So it was 'someone shows up' after all. I like my idea better. I doubt TNG actually featured more of that kind of existential threat than plain vanilla big baddies, but it feels like it might have done.

I doubt TNG actually featured more of that kind of existential threat than plain vanilla big baddies, but it feels like it might have done.

The longest plot arc in TNG, which began in the very first episode and ended in the very last, was that humanity has evolved so far that the Q continuum has come to judge it and see if it's fit to go on.

It was okay, and I loved that they found a nonviolent solution to the conflict in the spirit of TNG... But it still felt like every plot beat you expected to happen did: of course Starfleet will ride in as the cavalry, of course Picard's illness is gonna kick in right at the moment of climax, and of course they're gonna download him inside the android body they conveniently introduced last episode. The one thing I didn't expect was Data still being "alive", but OTOH the scene with him felt like total fanservice, just repeating the same points they already made when he died in Nemesis.

The fight between Seven of Nine and the Zhat Vash was completely extraneous and pointless, like did they really have to go for action movie of "good guys' tough girl fights the bad guys' tough girl in the end"? They could've just had SoN shoot her and still get the same ending for her.

Tuomas, Friday, 27 March 2020 15:15 (four years ago) link

Also, why the heck did all the Starfleet ships leave as soon as the Romulans left? Shouldn't one or two of them stayed behind just to oversee the situation, and to make sure some less diplomatically inclined Romulans wouldn't still try a sneak attack on the androids?

trishyb, Saturday, 28 March 2020 23:25 (four years ago) link

Agree with the Borg disappointment. Since the theme of the season was synthetic life, and the Borg themselves are semi-synthetic, I was expecting that to tie in with the main plot, but it never did. The whole thing with Hugh and the XB's and Seven of Nine was pretty much irrelevant in the end. They didn't event get to use the Borg cube for anything, so what was the point of bringing it to the android planet?

COVID and the Gang (jim in vancouver), Sunday, 29 March 2020 07:30 (four years ago) link

I disagree, because I like Discovery. Even if it did go off the boil towards the end of the second season.

I just can't get over how they threw the Borg away like that. How was Jean-Luc's tumour nothing to do with his Borg implant, when it so easily could have been a shadow of that? How was the scary entity that crosses dimensions when it learns of a group of high-functioning synthetic beings not the Borg? That is absolutely a thing they would do. How is Jean-Luc Picard totally fine with having his consciousness put into a non-human body without his permission? Surely that would be one of his great nightmares? I would expect it to be in his will! "No pissing about with my consciousness after my body dies." And why wouldn't you make his synthetic body younger? I know there are production reasons for that, but it makes no sense in context.

Mind you, the special effects in this were very impressive. I especially liked the space orchids. I also liked the fact that neither terrible Romulan boyfriend nor Rios appear to have bothered getting super-swole for their tank-top scenes. I mean, I'm sure they hit the gym that week, but it wasn't an all-out gun show.

trishyb, Sunday, 29 March 2020 08:30 (four years ago) link

This was bad. I got very annoyed with it after a few episodes. Just as with Discovery the show tries to be too many things at once without doing any of them particularly well.

Ok bloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 29 March 2020 11:01 (four years ago) link

How was Jean-Luc's tumour nothing to do with his Borg implant, when it so easily could have been a shadow of that?

TBF, Picard's brain disease was already introduced in the potential future seen in the last episode of TNG, and no Borg connection was mentioned there... But you're right, they still could've easily retconned it so that there is such a connection.

Tuomas, Monday, 30 March 2020 06:46 (four years ago) link

i liked that the borg were sidelined in this, that the ideological differences between them and the extra-dimensional ancient synths that were stuck in the romulan brains literally disabled the cube like a virus.
what i didn't like was that the big bad guys ended up being third rate flying spaghetti monsters.

they could have also let picard spend some of next season goofing off in the black lodge having tea with other killed-off characters before resurrecting him.

i am almost done with a complete star trek watch/rewatch and i went back to picard just after i finished tng—i had stopped a couple episodes in because it seemed kinda unnngh

but it turned out alright after that! on a par with discovery.

i liked how the narrative ended up reviving the idyllic-colonists/natives storyline repeated ad nauseam in tos and tng but centered it on the synthetics. it was kind of lol though that after all that the romulans just gave up. it was like their core belief! tested with its worst possible scenario!

presumably the possibility of going on means that they have a lot of borg stuff in their pocket to use in a second season.

Fun episode BUT this is really a mirror universe story, not a Back to the Future part II story. They are having it both ways with nature/nurture -- it is in the characters' genes that they become great people, but their morals are dictated by the reality they live in. This isn't a problem in Mirror Universe stories because they are in a bizarro universe, where some things are backwards and you shouldn't think about it too hard.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 14 March 2022 09:27 (two years ago) link

interesting connection, there
The crew on this show is headed back to Los Angeles, 2024. That year sounded familiar so I double-checked. The Gabriel Bell riots that DS9 time travelled to? San Francisco, 2024

mh, Monday, 14 March 2022 12:58 (two years ago) link

Yeah that had been discussed a bit in the runup elsewhere -- actual continuity, who knew!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 14 March 2022 14:20 (two years ago) link

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 14 March 2022 14:20 (two years ago) link

I did wonder if the date was relevant to an older ep or one of the movies!

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 14 March 2022 22:17 (two years ago) link

So is this (or Q's doing of this) implying this world is the end result of the riots not having been "fixed" by Sisko?

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 14 March 2022 22:19 (two years ago) link

Actually as an aside. I dont think I understood what Q was getting at when he was basically menacingly saying "you need to do penance. YOU KNOW WHY." is this notyet established or am I missing something cos I dont know what hes referring to, aside from the overall "trial" which ... ffs come on.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 14 March 2022 22:20 (two years ago) link

The big drop that keeps getting foreshadowed is that Picard has some sin or misfortune in his past that’s not been addressed. Guinan kind of prods him and implies it might be about personal relationships, Raffi rightfully gives him shit for the holes in his personal outlook, he has that weird flashback with his mom (?)… who knows! They’re leading to something

I do like the implication that the world going to shit in 2024 isn’t inevitable for… reasons.

mh, Monday, 14 March 2022 22:41 (two years ago) link

My early prediction Picards mom is the borg queen there I said it.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 14 March 2022 22:42 (two years ago) link

I think that the reference to the Bell Riots is a red herring, since they're supposed to be headed to LA and not SF, or maybe it's a double reverse red herring in that they deliberately ID'ed LA instead to throw us off the scent, but as for "YOU KNOW WHY," I think it's meant to be a mystery to viewers (if not *ahem* JL himself).

Vladimir Poutine (Leee), Monday, 14 March 2022 22:45 (two years ago) link

xp that was one of my three guesses, but I think
Picard is going to come clean about his past/mom to the crew, and one of them (maybe the tall female one?!) is it, and that is why the line from the nightmare/flashback happens

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 17 March 2022 18:19 (two years ago) link

I watched the first 10 mins of season 2 and was, like, Ok! He's back on the farm, so I guess nothing big happened, also the theme tune is bad now.

I just don't want to see any of the new crew, ever, except Orla Brady. Unless they're ok now?

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 17 March 2022 18:21 (two years ago) link

I don't think you really need to have seen the s1 finale for s2 so far -- might be worth reading a synopsis and then immediately facepalming.

Nu-crue:

  • Raffi has only called "JL" once by my count (of the two eps that I've seen), so she's only mildly annoying.
  • Elnor's actor is really limited and so he's being used as comic relief, which IMO makes him a little more bearable.
  • Agnes actually carried the second episode for me
Everyone else kind of merits a w/e.

mh, Sunday, 20 March 2022 01:15 (two years ago) link

I don't think this season is reinventing any warp drives but so far it's been 3/3.

  • Sorry mark no paintings this episode.
  • The millennial who's writing Jurati's dialogue deserves a Q-damned promotion.
  • Really liked the the psychological horror vibes in the Jurati/Queen scene even though it makes absolutely no sci-fi sense.
  • I wonder if they're going to pay off the white lady privilege stuff with Seven (although it's really nice to see Jeri Ryan show charisma on a Trek show) (same goes with Rios, both with his charisma and with almost getting away with bluffing ICE because he was a dude being authoritative).
  • I'm a little on the fence with this iteration of the Queen -- Alice Krige was vampy, Susanna Thompson was ethereal and spooky, but I'm not sure I have a strong read on Annie Wersching's yet (although admittedly she's only had half an episode to be lucid).

Justice League: Picard (Leee), Sunday, 20 March 2022 01:21 (two years ago) link

  • easily the best alison pill episode
  • absurd to let her do that without seven's supervision
  • easily the best santiago cabrera episode
  • borg queen has resting smirk face, and it's good

Trayce: yeah, I wondered about how Guinan didn't recognize Picard even though they'd met earlier, but timey wimey/alternate timeline shenanigans could be a convenient out. Also she doesn't look the same now as she did a century before (though I guess the throwaway line about being able to change her appearance at will is meant to handwave that away).

Despite that potential inconsistency, I dug all the little easter eggs (10 Forward as mentioned, but also why Picard sounds like a Brit).

Also, Marty McFly's mom directed the episode!

hah -- i saw who the director was but assumed it was a different person

mookieproof, Saturday, 26 March 2022 22:27 (two years ago) link

I like the idea of a timeline where
Guinan has been around earth during one of its worst periods, seen things move back and forth and then arrived at this 2024 bleak version, but without that tempering influence of having met Picard and crew back in the 1880s to know that things are going to rebound in a great way.

I recently rewatched the TNG episode where Ro Laren is initially sent to the Enterprise and Guinan sits her down and says, hey, I’m not here to be your friend, but here’s what I need to tell you. It’s a great moment because you can’t dictate what someone should do, but you can speak to them on their own terms.

I think there’s kind of a questionable writers room thing in ST with that, though, because as good as plays, the ST: First Contact movie also has a “black woman tells Picard to wake the fuck up” moment. I found it on youtube, but it cuts off before the great “..you broke your little toys..” line

mh, Saturday, 26 March 2022 23:58 (two years ago) link

Yeah if you accept that the timey wimey fuckery means theyre in a past/present where *everything* they were and did just Never Happened, things make more sense. Its a bit of a deus ex machina, but its also very Trek, so.

I just watched two early, generic DS9 eps in a row — one where Dax trains a floppy-haired 90s Trill with Chandler Bing’s voice, and one where Quark’s old Cardassian girlfriend turns up — and the characters have such soul and depth and wit. I miss that! That dissonance - that’s always been there - between the depth of feeling and the corniness of the presentation - seems even more pronounced, watching them now alongside the new shows.

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 9 April 2022 16:05 (two years ago) link

a major problem i have with this show is that @sirpatstew's solution to playing picard-when-old is being @OLDsirpatstew and just playing picard and i don't think it works

Nice twisty little nugget was Dr. Jemison being paged, who is almost surely Mae Jemison, real-life astronaut inspired to become one by TOS and later had a cameo on TNG.

Also, Seven has had experiences with Q(s).

mookieproof, Friday, 22 April 2022 17:37 (two years ago) link

I don’t MIND her but her whole vibe is Ray Winstone’s character from the fourth Indiana Jones movie, the alleged friend and colleague of many years with a dynamic that forces that issue instead of reflecting it.

I will finish it but yeah that episode inside Picard's head urrrrgh

Now I'll admit I've only seen stray TNG but not only does an emotionally repressed Men Would Rather Explore Space Than Go To Therapy Picard feel out of character, surely medical advances would have been sufficient by the time of Picard's childhood that his mum wouldn't have to be kept in some gothic basement because of her depression like it's the 19th century? The show's insistence on portraying Picard's childhood as being the early 20th century drives me up the wall.

The entire concept of the borg and fighting them sometimes feels like such a boondoggle given the Q's could just zap them out of existence. I guess this also explains why Q never shows up in Disco - hes dead by then (who knows wether they knew that a few years back though?)

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 7 May 2022 09:09 (one year ago) link

Oh one fleeting thing I am not sure I heard properly - when Q says to JL "even gods have favourites and you happen to be mine", for a moment I swear it looked like Picard was starting to say "wait, youre a go..."

Did I imagine that?

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 7 May 2022 09:11 (one year ago) link

was anything picard actually did say fleeting? my answer here is no

mark s, Saturday, 7 May 2022 10:29 (one year ago) link

Everyone on this thread OTM. Finale kind of rallied despite the mid-season slide into silly mediocrity. The desire to not die alone was actually kind of nice and would've been better had that scene not dragged on so long.

For a moment I wondered if the spatial anomaly was Q's corpse finally dissolving after centuries and releasing massive amounts of energy, and that THAT was his surprise gift, not Elnor.

Also also since Picard is housed inside a Soong-bot, I'm assuming he's fully functional.

I guess this also explains why Q never shows up in Disco - hes dead by then (who knows wether they knew that a few years back though?)

There are still other Q, presumably!

Oh one fleeting thing I am not sure I heard properly - when Q says to JL "even gods have favourites and you happen to be mine", for a moment I swear it looked like Picard was starting to say "wait, youre a go..."

Did I imagine that?

I rewatched this scene, and JL only sez, "Q..." before Q cuts him off. Given that the Q/god thing was touched on in "Tapestry," I think it was more poetic license than anything else (though given that he and the Continuum are basically omnipotent, potato/tomato).

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Saturday, 18 February 2023 22:44 (one year ago) link

This was fine as kind of dumb action stuff but several things are bugging me about this qua Star Trek.

Starfleet and the people in it are so inept in Picard and Disco -- I know the added drama of TRUST NO ONE and CONSPIRACY OMG, threaded through with TNG-era Starfleet's reputation for bureaucracy, but the number of times these series require circumventing and/or suborning Starfleet officers, all of which happens pathetically easily ("Captain Shaw won't let us go save Beverley, oh I know, let's wait till he falls asleep before we change course, great plan!"), is so trite and lazy. It's the reason why I think Lower Decks/SNW are easily the best of the current crop of shows, because they show Starfleet as actually good at their jobs.
Crusherson speaking with a French Brit accent is supposed to make us think he's JL's, but that's the least interesting/bothersome part of this story. I'm annoyed of characterizing Bev as being this cornered gung ho mom -- can't she be her own character with her own motivations? Subordinating her to her caretaking role is disappointing (but, unfortunately, also very Trek) -- and then she also kills two people? Yeah sure self-defense and MUST PROTECT MY SON whatever, but that also felt like lazy storytelling.
Raffi's handler == Worf, surely? He couldn't resist calling her a warrior.
Mark: How do you feel about them getting the ugly painting out of the way in episode 1?

Of course, this is just one episode, but the fact that it features so many of bugbears (with more yet to come) kind of makes me wary.

ancient combadges have galaxy-wide reception, and happily this one just happened to be nearby. couldn't possibly purchase/hire a spaceship -- too dangerous! -- so instead we had to half-assedly suborn a starfleet flagship that apparently lacked a transporter or tractor beam when we stole its shuttle. raffi is always terrible, but never moreso than when standing in a dark corner of a target zone and yelling into her tricorder that she's a starfleet spy. obviously her 'handler' is worf but why does she have an anonymous handler who shits on her for being an ex-junkie instead of a supportive superior officer? these dudes went seven seasons with a fluorescently lit bridge and a faux-wooden railing and now every fucking ship thinks it's in a submarine battle? i use dark mode too, but come on. titan captain, who presumably saw his family flayed alive at wolf 359 or something, was just absurd (while also being right). no matter how corrupt we are meant to assume starfleet is (gene rod rolling in his grave, no doubt), there are no captains anywhere with that attitude. and of course we have a callback to captain rachel garrett of the enterprise-c with absolutely no explanation why she's been painted red.

oh did you notice how that one planet is named after the showrunner? how precious!

this shit is like someone threw the memory-alpha source code at a wall and filmed it

I get that they’re trying to set up all kinds of wild plot devices in one episode, but this was a bit much

I didn’t quite follow the “don’t trust starfleet!” warning leading to Picard deciding the best course of action would be to trick a starfleet captain into taking him close enough to the coordinates. He and Riker were going to be part of the celebration and they didn’t want to mysteriously not show up for that so… yeah, I missed something

It's like a man child playing with his still-boxed TNG action figures, all mint.

Also did we ever hear Riker playing or listening to bebop? I only remember trad jazz.

I seem to reveal that an earlier draft of "All Good Things" where the old TNG crew steal the Enterprise to go on Picard's mission but the writers dropped it for being a dopey idea, too bad Q is dead now or else he could've sent someone in time to persuade this show's writers from making the same mistake.

Insurrection was the TNG movie that I flat-out didn’t like, but it did bring up the idea that factions within the Federation were up to some shady shit. The execution was just insanely corny.

Insurrection was not well-executed but introduced actual changes in the status quo (Troi and Riker get married, Riker leaves to command his own ship at the end, Data’s dead) and the Picard writers have been leaning on those plot points

mh, Saturday, 25 February 2023 14:18 (one year ago) link

Philip Nunez, Friday, 3 March 2023 22:08 (one year ago) link

I think it's going to be much more banal, similar to how they made the Borg boring. Like, oh great, yet another rogue faction that wants to kill humans, which completely throws away the uncanniness of the Great Link. Whatever happened to "the drop becomes the ocean, and the ocean becomes the drop"? All my clamoring for the rest of Trek top acknowledge the stuff that happened in DS9 and this is what we get? Maybe they'll pull something interesting out of this thread but I doubt it.

Starting to think Bev warned against trusting SF not because she suspected a mole but because they're now staffed by incompetents. All that time they spent in the nebula and they didn't even try to come up with a decent plan. Can't believe this show is making me miss deus ex machina technobabble!

Shartreuse (Leee), Sunday, 5 March 2023 05:17 (one year ago) link

can't argue with that at all

a) i don't care about the kid
b) i don't care that he's picard's kid
c) i don't care that bev has hidden (this 33yo actor) from picard
d) might be rude to yield the kid to amanda plummer in an effort to save the other 500 people on the titan, but also i don't care
e) i resent shaw being written as an incredible asshole when he was correct
f) i resent picard being written as manic attack guy just to create conflict with riker, who was correct
g) i don't care about rafi, or the resurfacing of rafi's addictive nature as a plot point. although if worf keeps calling her rafaela i will inevitably cave
h) oh no a ~biological~ gravity well! certainly no one has ever encountered that before!

never got a good look at amanda plummer's crew, but they certainly *sound* like the insectoid xindi from enterprise. that's no doubt a bit much to cram in whilst honoring every other possible tangent tho

mookieproof, Sunday, 5 March 2023 07:11 (one year ago) link

They must be stretching out the plot again because vintage Trek would've used the biological gravity well this episode instead of what I'm guessing will be the next to make their escape.

Nu Trek largely seems content on cherry-picking only the high level lore established in previous series (the Dominion War), and ignoring the finer details that made the world alive (the Bajoran officer saying God instead of the Prophets).

Shartreuse (Leee), Sunday, 5 March 2023 15:48 (one year ago) link

Shartreuse (Leee), Thursday, 9 March 2023 22:08 (one year ago) link

Some of the old TNG magic came back when they had actors retelling dramatic events rather than clumsily showing it, which was directly contrasted to them clumsily showing dramatic events in the same episode.

Wow we almost got a CRAZY deep cut...but I have always wondered:

https://gizmodo.com/star-trek-picard-season-3-changelings-conspiracy-tng-1850214543

But while the Changelings were an early part of Matalas’ plans for season 3, for a brief moment they were almost replaced by another hidden Star Trek villain, this time directly from Picard’s roots in TNG—the parasitic bugs from the infamous season 1 episode “Conspiracy.” In that episode, Picard and Riker uncover a plot by a race of alien bugs to infiltrate Starfleet command, burrowing into their unfortunate hosts and killing them, puppeting them in secret. Which was, for Matalas, the problem with bringing them back.

“I do like the conspiracy bugs, I did consider for a hot minute, the conspiracy bugs,” Matalas continued. “The issue with the conspiracy bugs is they kill their host. So that would mean anyone that you saw with a bug in them was dead, and you wouldn’t be able to do the paranoia thriller that you wanted to do if it was somebody you loved, that meant they were dead. So there (were) about three storylines I couldn’t do without killing legacy characters.”

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 11 March 2023 18:20 (one year ago) link

did I, for a moment, wonder during the interrogation of that guy at the hands of Worf and Raffi if that was going to be the reveal? maaaaybe

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Saturday, 11 March 2023 22:04 (one year ago) link

Having only just finished watching DS9 in toto I found it helped. But I dont think its neccesary.

The pot thing bugged me though. That always seemed like an Odo-specific item, I dont see why another rogue changeling (I assume, one of the ones released like Odo was years earlier to "explore"?) would have the same kind of pot, given they all usually live in the Link, and the outliers... dont even know what they are initially if DS9's anything to go on?

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 12 March 2023 06:37 (one year ago) link

indeed. and even odo -- who didn't know what he was, and therefore couldn't have known to create a special pot -- could at a pinch, liquidate himself in the . . . embrace of a friendly betazoid

mookieproof, Sunday, 12 March 2023 06:53 (one year ago) link

i realize that i'm complaining a lot and i don't really *mean* to do that

but!

if these producers are masterful enough to pull out changelings plus the rumored moriarty and/or lore, they should be better about the other, perhaps 'smaller' things that seem off

mookieproof, Sunday, 12 March 2023 07:18 (one year ago) link

surely when Odo went back to the great link he shared his knowledge of the specific model of small bucket that serves as the perfect changeling resting vessel and they’re all replicating it when they visit the federation

mh, Sunday, 12 March 2023 14:23 (one year ago) link

Agreed that this was a good episode but it took a lot of exasperation to set the characters up on the chessboard in a way to make the story work, the most anti-Trek example of which is making Shaw an anti-Borg bigot who thinks little of dead naming 7. I'm not a "no conflict in Starfleet, ever" purist but you can make a jerk Trek captain (Jellico 4ever) without making him a stupid goon.

H in Addis, Saturday, 18 March 2023 08:07 (one year ago) link

they're not making it easy for themselves having to compress 20 years of backstory of what happened to Ro in 30 seconds of dialogue but amnesty for any maquis left after getting butchered in the dominion war who are willing to use guerrilla tactics against the Cardassian-Founder axis under some black ops section 31 shenanigans seems plausible enough but the writing doesn't really sell it, being 3/4 baked (which is still an improvement over how half-baked most of the earlier seasons were).

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 18 March 2023 22:00 (one year ago) link

Yes that was my only issue - i guess we're still spoilerizing this are we Picard makes it clear he has Had It with Ro, she's dead to him because of what she did, he seems quite bitter about it in fact (and I have to be honest I don't recall her leaving TNG being THAT acrimonious?). Then she turns him around completely in one quick conversation? I get they had to speed things along but it was a little wham-bam.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Saturday, 18 March 2023 23:16 (one year ago) link

oh, i don't doubt that starfleet might ultimately take ro back -- i mean two seasons ago a romulan spy was their chief of intelligence; their security is historically awful. i just don't think *she* would do it, particularly when a free bajor needed rebuilding

the whole interaction was necessarily speedy, but i do buy the general sense of it. he really liked and respected (at least??) her in TNG and was torn up when she defected. it's kind of funny how riker, who actually hooked up with her and later sympathized with her defection, was left out of it, but i guess the show isn't called 'riker'. (also beggars belief that these starfleet legends were unaware of her return while she built her career back up to commander, but whatevs)

mookieproof, Saturday, 18 March 2023 23:37 (one year ago) link

Despite myself and the narrative whiplash and what is imo still kind of a boilerplate story, I agree that this was a genuinely good episode. They even made Worf an interesting character! To Mookie's last point, she said that she even went to the media, yet somehow Picard and Riker were still blindsided by her resilience.

Shartreuse (Leee), Sunday, 19 March 2023 06:36 (one year ago) link

Also, I'm really torn about how quickly Ro got reintroduced and disposed of, like was Michelle Forbes' availability limited to a one episode guest shot? In which case the slack dithering of the first 3-4 episodes feels a lot more egregious.

Shartreuse (Leee), Sunday, 19 March 2023 22:35 (one year ago) link

i def agree w that, it felt like too good of a “get” to be one and done.

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 19 March 2023 22:37 (one year ago) link

I don’t know if I’ll continue to enjoy it if it stretches further, but the “revelation” that Picard was never this stoic figure, that he was very emotionally involved in his crew and his relationship to them, plays pretty well. Old man in his dotage, maybe. I thought for a minute that Picard and ~spoiler character~ were being implied as having a deeper bond offscreen, but I think it’s shown in the TNG episodes that he felt tested!

It’s not really revisionist per se, but just showing us what it meant to be Captain Jean-Luc Picard. They had to stick to the character and only show brief cracks or absolutely break him (see: Locutus) to make him fallible, and now we’re just getting all cracks

So episode 6 is another memberberry festival, like s3e1. Moriarty turned out to be another unexplained callback instead of a main villain.

I think Worf has said he's a pacifist in every episode he's been in. You'd think at least one writer would notice that the word isn't being used correctly.

There's something gross and unsettling about Picard's casual way of strip-mining fan nostalgia when
they literally have Kirk's corpse on display in a CIA Section 31 museum and if it ends up being actually intentional self-hating meta-commentary from the writer's room, I am down with it!

Also digging Plummer's power move in refusing to pronounce Picard anglo-style.

Ha yeah that made me giggle. "Picarrrrr"

Some thoughts:
- Moriarty was basically just a security key aka fanservice cameo? Were we meant to think Sec31 set him up or he just decided to protecc the archive himself, like why would he use a melody only Riker would know?
- I kept thinking that I didn't like how the changelings goo looks now (lol not that it looked good in DS9), but it occurs to me now that it looks bad because it looks... diseased. On Reddit someone speculated that maybe they never quite cured everyone, and the disease mutated so they effectively banished the incurable from the greater Link, and its those changelings who are bitter and want revenge. Who knows, but its a theory I like!
- on this note, might we see the return of the breen? I doubt the Vorta will reappear. Though lol - good excuse for an Iggy cameo.
- the ref to a hangar where Geordie cuts his daughter off, is speculated thats the Ent-D being repaired, and that'll come into play because now clearly they need a ship that isnt networked to the compromised fleet.
- Expected Spiner to put on the schizopersonality thing, and we were clearly informed - TWICE - that the bot has "all the personalites unintegrated in there". So it was annoying when he shifted to a clearly Lore expression and said "I'm Lore!" ffs

- "We will not be prey. We will be ... friendly energy."

"I don't understand the world anymore."

Thought parts of the latest were too crammed with so-so zings, which compounds the wonky pacing of this season. I wish they spent more time fleshing out Sydney's character more before this episode because she's kind of been a plot device before now and her actor still seems a little tentative.

I remembered that the whistling clip had been used before. Had to look up that it was in Shades of Grey. It was also mentioned in one of the movies. Kind of weird that this season is so focused on season 1 of TNG, then skips ahead to the DS9 stories.

Episode 7: Was it coincidence that Jack got telepathic powers right after Troi was kidnapped? Also, kind of silly that the changelings just figured out that they can pretend to be a floor, something Odo did all the time on DS9.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 13 April 2023 23:23 (one year ago) link

They're packing a lot in each episode but also wasting a lot of minutes reiterating to the audience what we were shown in exactly the previous scene.
At the same time, if they're going to tie in last season's socially awkward rogue borg alliance as a deus ex they're being pretty negligent in not setting that up, almost conspicuously so.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 13 April 2023 23:32 (one year ago) link

I'm struggling to recall last season - Jurati became a (not THE?) queen, and then what happened? was that just all an alt timeline that doesnt count cos it was a Q fuckup and they fixed it?

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 13 April 2023 23:35 (one year ago) link

Last season did seem like a setup for a future resolution but it's bizarrely unclear whether this supposed final season of Picard is part of it.

Also, they're really casually killing characters off left and right at a real finger-snapping pace. At this rate, they'll probably kill Data off two or three times during the finale.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 13 April 2023 23:39 (one year ago) link

I want to say yes bcs it feels like S3 is a bit seperate, more fanservicey too. But there is some stuff in S1-2 that happens that S3 will be confusing if you dont know.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 13 April 2023 23:52 (one year ago) link

Even though a lot of the show is written as if it's really inconvenient to them that S1 & S2 happened, if there are any good 5 minute season-summary videos, I would recommend watching those before S3.
Also, if you haven't seen DS9, a brief summary of that might be in order as well.

A lot of prereqs for this course!

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 13 April 2023 23:53 (one year ago) link

Oh right Voyager as well. I'd lay 2:1 odds we get a Janeway appearance, something that they actually did take the trouble to leave multiple breadcrumbs for.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 14 April 2023 00:01 (one year ago) link

I haven't seen S1 or S2 either, but jumped into S3 easily with a few minutes of Memory Alpha reading.

You would think that Starfleet would have given up on all-encompassing control systems after the M-5 incident... Section 31 naming their black site after M-5's creator is perverse, even for them.

formerly abanana (dat), Friday, 14 April 2023 02:42 (one year ago) link

I was expecting the Borg bcs I could swear we'd discussed that here but I must've seen that on Reddit I guess. I'm still a little unclear on the changelings/Vadiks role here. Organic borgs they were saying? If they'd been able to infect everyone under 25 who used a transporter (lol what a deus ex) then what was the point of the changelings? given everything else this season was TNG, that now feels out of place. Perhaps I missed something in all that exposition.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Friday, 14 April 2023 03:37 (one year ago) link

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Friday, 14 April 2023 03:39 (one year ago) link

A lot of the fanservice winks are a little too ham-handed (and I echo Philip's sentiment), but seeing the bridge and hearing Majel Barrett's voice gave an actual thrill.

That said, I was hoping that the red door thing WASN'T Borg-related, because post-BOBW Borg stories, especially those involving the Queen, have generally resulted in middling Trek, and Picard's writers are bad at Trek, and as it turns out two wrongs do not make a right. Also, is Jack the Borg Prince?

I have the same questions as Trayce. If it turns out that the motivation was just petty vengeance, MEH. Also, is Vadik's boss a reconstituted Borg Queen?

Another thing that bothers me about this season's spate of cameos is that they just bring characters back to kill them off, which is really kind of selfish and I dunno, lazy? Selfish because now they're effectively off-limits to other series )(unless there are more secret Soongs with synth bodies that they could get downloaded into), while we have Data killed off three times and Picard once. Lazy because they're barely integrated into the plot beyond, "Hey, here's someone who was on the show 30 years ago, love it, nerds." Shelby could've been anyone, aside from the one line that does a LOT of heavy lifting to remark on how out-of-character the whole dumb plan was. Also not a great look that the ones who've been killed have been women, assuming that Shelby is indeed dead.

Yeah, Borg stories hopefully are put to bed now because this, like every story following "I, Borg," has made them such stock villains that have almost none of their original alienness -- how banal it was that Queenie (and Vadic) were simply motivated by revenge.

Health and Wellness Worf is still a treasure. Philip, I kind of wonder if Klingon redundant physiology explains why he was able to shake off the phaser blasts.

I did completely hate Will's decision to keep Picard company, dressed up as loyalty but really just a cheap way of amplifying the stakes, in a way that doesn't make sense. He and Troi still have a daughter, or did she get conveniently forgotten?!

I enjoyed the last ep overall as a nicely final-feeling bit of action TV with lots of fanservice. But.

As others already said, wither Jurati? What was the point of her borgifying if they just dropped that story?

If Q is able to recombobulate or whatever explanation befits, he could have done the decent thing and stepped in and stopped the borg thing. Just rude.

Cannot get past Jack and Picard being able to just rip out their borg cabling. ESPECIALLY since the queen specifically said, several minutes earlier, that doing so would destroy their minds. What is the POINT of assimilation if you can fight it that casually. And yeah did Picard just jam the port into his skin? Huh?

On a related note Worf seemed to cope with being shot twice right in the arm/shoulder by a powerful weapon thats been shown to kill people instantly on many occasions. He didnt even seem hurt. OK whatever. I did like the sword/phaser joke though.

I suppose this is where I show my old age because the Treaty of Algernon is complete bullshit and should never have been signed with that provision intact. Section 31 sucks for not bothering to reverse-engineer cloaking tech anyway and Star Fleet sucks for not demanding that Section 31 does - even if it means installing an "in case of emergency, invoke Section 31" button on every NCC-* bridge (surprise, by doing so - you're now a Section 31 ship!) That alone would be a more interesting plot than - oh no, another page or two of script burned on the fucking cloaking device instead of something interesting.

I'm annoyed with how this all wrapped up because the first half was just good enough to encourage my own runaway imagination to expect something better than another Borg story (story made even lazier because now there's a kid). The fact that we're all talking about better spin-off fantasy shows whether it's Star Trek: Enterprise-G with Captain Seven or Star Trek: Kung Fu with Worf just magnifies how inert Picard is - even with all the end of the world stuff going on outside the viewscreen, the show (and him) seem strangely reactive. This isn't the first time this has happened with Star Trek or any other heritage IP bogged down by the weight of its own nostalgia. See also: the Obi-Wan series, most dalek episodes of nuWho.

I remember that Stewart went through a "refers to self in third person" phase in the late 90s or early 00s, maybe this was a deeply buried tic that resurfaced.
