Any word on this new McBride show, The Righteous Gemstones? I only literally this moment learned of its existence from a random website ad.

I watched the first episode, it continues very much in the same vein as his previous two HBO shows - same type of characters, same type of dialogue, same type of conflicts/themes. First ep alternated between mildly amusing and artfully crafted disturbing.

Second episode was pretty damn good tho I thought Walter Goggles was going to be in it. Edi Patterson is great and Keefe (the ex-Satanist guy) is just about perfect.

some serious Scorsese/Casino vibes with that opening cash-flow montage in the last ep

nah, (so far) this has a huge serious core topic that is just a hook to hang tomfoolery upon; Vice Principals treated a very tiny unimportant position as massively important, for greater fundamental comic effect.
also more & better Goggins.

Never made it all the way through vice principals, but i’m enjoying gemstones a lot. i’m not finding it particularly laugh-out-loud funny though, especially compared to eastbound and down. the most consistently funny characters are judy and keefe, but even they are more smirk-inducing than anything

I didn't see Vice Principals, but this new show is one of the most tonally strange things I've ever seen. We're on episode 4, I think, and often it feels like watching a show set in some alternate universe of gangster preachers, stuntmen and raving Satanists. Which ... I guess it is? But it's so ott cartoonish without being funny like a cartoon. Or maybe silly without silly-show laughs, because it's interrupted by violent showdowns and gun waving in place of slapstick? I dunno, it's weird. I think we like it, though sometimes I have to ask myself what the fuck I'm watching.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, September 21, 2019 2:20 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink
some of it is cartoonish, but have you been following the Falwells lately?
― untuned mass damper (mh), Saturday, September 21, 2019 4:21 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink
For sure! But violently feuding with rival preachers isn't cartoonish, it's dark, especially as depicted here, which doesn't seem comedic, or even satirical. Now, preachers as actual crime families *is* perfectly satirical, and I do like the show, but like I said, the tone is all over the place. I don't know what to call it, even though black comedy maybe comes closest?
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, September 21, 2019 4:28 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, September 21, 2019 4:45 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

― Tart Prepper (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, September 21, 2019 9:53 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink
xpost Holy shit!
Anyway, my broader point was not any lack of realism, it's that the dramatic stuff is (and is played) more serious than the comedy stuff is funny, which makes everything kind of discordant. In episode 4, for example, you've got the wife on her assault weapons course, which is ridiculous but not terribly funny, or particularly played for laughs. Or in the previous episode, I think, you've got McBride's crew, who are inherently funny, but the scene with McBride threatening the guy with the stiletto knife to his throat is ... not funny, even of the situation is similarly ridiculous. Or in this most recent one, McBride and his wife in the car chase, also silly, also not funny, or played for many laughs. Tonally crazy.
― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, September 22, 2019 4:31 AM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink
I guess I remember Eastbound being more overlty funny, but I suppose from Pineapple Express to Halloween, this awkward tonal mix has sort of been McBride's and David Gordon Green's jam.

Violently feuding high school teachers also isnt terribly realistic, and some of the shit those 2 did to the other principal was HORRIBLE and dark. Thats the point of the stuff McBride does, right? Yer on board with it or not, I guess.

Just to reiterate, I like this new show! Just hard to get a handle on. Dark crime family drama heist comedy satire?
BTW, I know he's getting older, and playing a character, and has lost a lot of weight, but Goodman just seems so kind of last-role tired in this. Like, literally tired. Hope he's ok.

It’s called acting
― untuned mass damper (mh), Sunday, September 22, 2019 7:36 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink
I think, outside of making everything over the top, what the McBride/Hill shows do is a caricature of excess that is ridiculous on its face rather than crafting an intricate plot about white collar crime or an intrigue about minutiae. And then they smash all the caricatures together. Do megachurches do things to lure people away to their own congregation to the point of sabotage and rumor? Sure, but that’s not nearly as obvious in screen as just smashing things, or as ridiculous and funny
The theory posited elsewhere that their shows have a deeply Protestant feel, that all sins are forgiven if you repent (or repeatedly have to repent) or that you’re one of the chosen because you’re moneyed, works for me. It’s like a guy in a hole who isn’t getting any closer to the surface but occasionally runs into a gold nugget as he burrows deeper. You can’t be both successful and wrong.

a deeply Protestant feel, that all sins are forgiven if you repent
surely this is more a Catholic point of view?
Luther believed that redemption was already baked into humanity. Jesus died on the cross FOR you. Calvin believed in predestination. doesn't matter how much you repent.
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, September 23, 2019 2:57 AM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink
I do like the idea of ott caricatures doing regular things. Usually in shows and movies it's regular people doing silly stuff. In this it's silly people doing serious stuff. Like, McBride is innately funny and funny-looking and his arrogant line readings are funny, so when you see him waving a gun you expect it to be funny, too, but it's not, not really. Same with Goggins, a kind of goofy looking dude on a good day magnified to 100 in this, but then his behavior, while still ridiculous, is nowhere near as ridiculous as the way he looks. Or Kelvin, that character is such a cartoon, but he's (so far) almost the most sincere of all of them, and Keefe (!), for being a big weirdo, is at least something of a real success story in this preacher world.
And yet even beyond that the show has no problem with good old dumb humor, too, like making fun of Mrs. Baby Billy's teeth, which is a real Farrelly Brothers thing to do.
Re: religion, this world is straight up prosperity gospel, right? Which is Protestant.
(Back to Goodman, btw. Yeah, acting. I hope! Because when he was overweight and breathing heavy in every scene, that sure wasn't acting.)
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, September 23, 2019 5:03 AM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink
xp I think it's more that the "repenting" involves public self-flagellation and has absolutely nothing to do with personal moral clarity. Catholic repentance is between you and God, with a priest as a mediator in confession. The more evangelical position is that you have to do it in front of everyone.

I know it's the McBride/Hill/Green stock in trade, but by the end I had trouble sticking with the radical tonal shifts back and forth from melodrama to silly to bizarre. I did like how it all wrapped up, but it's just so odd to watch these outright lunatics and weirdos in a "real world" story of redemption and family. I mean, when Kelvin goes full Danzig? That's amusing, but also totally ridiculous, just like the return to the ott sex club goth dance party dungeon rave to rescue Keefe, though that did contain my favorite joke, when Kelvin talks to the head goth and threatens him with his "seven years of Taekwondo" and the guy immediately backs down, intimidated. Lots of great moments like that throughout the whole show, of course, just felt like broad sketch characters dropped into the real world. My wife loved the whole show, though.
And xpost omg That *was* Scotty in the Breaking Bad movie. Acting!

Edi Patterson is ooc!!shes not from the US but loves some OG ‘prestige’ tv (sopranos, deadwood) as they can serve as a sort of quick and dirty cliffs notes to the US Project. . damned if the McBride trilogy doesn’t fill in the gaps

Definitely some funny moments last night, though I'm really not sure I like the storyline getting set up for Eli this season. We'll see.
My wife thought it was funny that they cast such a good looking guy for a young John Goodman, but such a, well, unique, looking guy for a young Eric Roberts, when you'd expect the opposite.

First episode was pretty funny, felt a bit Coen Bros. at times in its operatic ott-ness. Forgot Eric Andre was in this. Could probably watch 45 minutes of the siblings insulting each other, which tbf is what this show often feels like.

― kurt schwitterz, Tuesday, 11 January 2022 17:20 (two years ago) link
im with josh in that i wouldnt have missed this if it went away but happy its back.
my fear with streaming comedies like this is always that they'll get too plotty and think that i'm actually invested in the epic story of this family or w/e when all i want is laffs. but the fact that i remember almost nothing that happened in the first season is helping me in that respect to make it feel fresh. if they just deliver at least 1 or 2 good sibling schoolyard-insult bickering matches i'll be a satisfied viewer.
― nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 11 January 2022 17:22 (two years ago) link
Jesse trying to get ahead of his siblings is very Falwell-esque, judging from some of the articles I’ve readThey’ve thrown in so many threads from different evangelical figures

I think the interview (maybe linked here?) had McBride mentioning he hasn’t watched Succession but who knows
― mh, Tuesday, 11 January 2022 18:19 (two years ago) link
I mean, I don't think it's really similar to Succession all that much. Only Jesse is striving to take over for his dad, the other two kids just seem to be fighting for his attention more than anything else. And Eli has been pretty definitive, repeatedly, about the "I'm not going anywhere" and isn't like dangling the job over his kids' heads so they can fight over it.
― a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 11 January 2022 18:22 (two years ago) link
yeah its a pretty obvious plot element to explore for a show about a powerful patriarch and his ambitious children. i cant imagine that when they set up the universe & all the characters in season 1 that they were thinking about succession, a show that had just premiered
― nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 11 January 2022 18:37 (two years ago) link
First, I think this season may be funnier than the first. Second, at the same time it's really leaning into violence and gore (which has been a DGG/MCBride mainstay since at least Pineapple Express). Three, in the middle of the long God Squad segment, my wife, who likes this show more than I do, nonetheless muttered "I think the writers are having just a little too much fun," and then when the episode was over kind of grumbled "what a weird show."

The difference in Eli’s reaction to BJ’s family and the way his kids reacted feels like it captured a generational difference pretty well. Eli’s kind of passive-aggressive about “oh, you’re secular, sure, we’re here if you need us” while Judy and her siblings act like saying “we’re secular” is an affront to their very existence.
Not that BJ’s family is completely normal, kind of dweeby (his sister is KJ!). But this nice family, with a loving stepdad, seem to genuinely work well together and their support for their son, mild riffing on how weird the whole baptism celebration is, was an excellent reminder of how far off the norm the Gemstones are. And the Gemstones reacting was o_O
― mh, Monday, 24 January 2022 16:02 (two years ago) link
Edi Patterson and Tim Baltz both absolutely killed it in this episode, just a joy to watch. This show usually has a pretty good soundtrack but last night's was particularly killer.

I havent thought much abt the show since 2019 and honestly forgot most of S1, so this season a few times I've found myself watching the characters and assuming that deep down they're not actually religious, since I'm so used to seeing characters like this eventually get exposed as fully nonreligious grifters. And then I'll catch myself feeling surprised when we're reminded that the Gemstones, or at least Eli, are believers who take what they imagine to be their religion seriously, even if they are also objectively amoral monsters. Like Eli is a hypocrite and grifter, but would still totally have been thrilled if BJs family ever decided to get baptized.

ok just finished S1, one thing that was kind of bothersome/funny is that Jesse never figures out who is blackmailing him. you keep expecting him to have that Breaking Bad Hank sitting on the toilet moment but he doesn't get it until it's literally told to his face. its especially weird when they show the actual scene and it's clear that there's only ONE PERSON who could've actually filmed him...otoh the central theme of this show is that all of the characters (save for Eli) are pretty dumb

Wow at finding that mini McBride.
I realize that watching this show for the plot is missing the point, but at the same time, they keep throwing plot at us, and knowing this is the same team behind (among other things) the most recent shitty and sloppy and stupid Halloween movies, I have no faith the dangling threads and detours will lead to anything. For example, the brutal murder of the journalist and all the other people at that house, sure, it's possible or likely we'll get more on that. At the same time, that kind of carnage would make headline national news for weeks on end. Or Gideon Gemstone, he was more or the less the entire focus of season one, but he's barely been in this season. I realize we are seeing this show more or less through the self-obsessed eyes of the Gemstones, but still. And then again, I guess we did find out why he kept riding that rollercoaster.
Unrelated, I love Walton Goggins, but anyone else notice how sweaty he is in all his scenes? Not intentional sweat, either (which would suit the character), just inconsistent speckles of sweat on his face in half his scenes that either the make-up people have missed or maybe just can't keep up with? Could it be a choice? Perhaps, but it's so subtle and inconsistent I doubt it. Sets can be hot, and he's a pretty physical performer. But so's everyone in this show.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 February 2022 13:13 (two years ago) link
i'm....almost definitely sure we are going to see the journalist/house murders tie back. I am fairly sure that was Junior's doing in an attempt to take down the Gemstones in some kind of massive framejob or something
― he's very big in the region of my butthole (Neanderthal), Thursday, 3 February 2022 14:27 (two years ago) link
the journalist might also have been lying about why he was investigating the Gemstones. Aimee-Leigh was "rude to staff"? seems a rather thin reason for a hit piece.
possible that Junior gave Thaniel a tip that Gemstone might have killed his dad and Thaniel lied about the reason for wanting to interview Eli so that he'd agree to be interviewed.
― he's very big in the region of my butthole (Neanderthal), Thursday, 3 February 2022 14:29 (two years ago) link
pretty sure the main plot arc of the season is: 1. where did the money come from 2. what is Eli hiding3. who killed the journalist because he might have found out about 1 & 2
that guy that started out as Eli's accountant seems like a very wholesome man
― mh, Thursday, 3 February 2022 14:42 (two years ago) link

was disappointed at the short length of this one, pretty shocking ending, but as soon as Eli got in the car, I knew what was coming.
it's pretty obvious that Junior had nothing to do with the hit, because even he couldn't coordinate a retaliatory hit that fast, and he seemed more perplexed than anything as to why he was visited, and with the Lissons gone so long, I tend to agree with upthread that it's a Godfather/Virgil Sollozzo styled hit lead by them to get to the money.

Good memory! Also, would kind of justify Gideon being all but AWOL this season; I think his siblings have had more lines than he has.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 February 2022 18:11 (two years ago) link
Gideon is interesting, but it's hard to piece together a motive for killing Eli. He is mad about getting the Grandaddy Roy house? He didn't seem that upset about it, and it would likely fall on Jesse. I suppose he may now be too loyal to Jesse and his mother, killing Eli to help them out? It seems likely that he'd love his own Grandfather. Perhaps he's discovered something about Eli's past and views it as hypocritical and/or revealing his own inner mean streak.

and throwing star in BJ's head, lol.
fwiw I feel like if you were on a moving motorcycle and started firing an automatic weapon like that the recoil would throw you off the bike pretty much instantaneously
lotta plot threads to wrap up in these final two episodes, seems clear that the bikers were sent by the Lissons and that Junior probably knows Eli likely had something to do with his Dad's disappearance but its still pretty unclear what happened to Schwartzman's character. thinking one of these eps is going to show that whole scene

This was some quality ridiculously awesomely bad (so, awesome) television. All the barfing, the well telegraphed glory hole telescope to the eye, the ninja star in the head, the cattle prod holster ... basically next level fucking around what-the -fuckery.
They did have that close-up (misdirect?) of a long-haired blonde guy in the audience at their sermon, then you see long blonde hair sticking out of a guy's helmet. The only long haired blonde guy I recall (besides Keef) is the wrestler that was sent to threaten Eli. But this show ... none of that shit really matters. This show is the kind of goof-off where you can clearly see a guy's long blonde hair sticking out from under a helmet, but when they go to unmask him it'll turn out to be Eric Andre. There's got to be something liberating about introducing a plot-heavy melodrama that has no interest in logic or reason or anything, just a hilariously indulgent goof, including all the stuff that's not funny. In that sense it kind of reminds me of "Arrested Development," and if "AD" hadn't done it first (?) "Gemstones" is the kind of show that I could have seen ending each episode with a "next week" preview of stuff that never happens.

― Chris L, Monday, 21 February 2022 14:58 (two years ago) link
it still doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me since Eli was supposed to be on that bus and unless I'm forgetting something Amber didn't seem to put up much of a fight getting on it herself. also the Lissons are definitely involved, didn't they mention early on that they ran some charity for troubled teens or something? so that's who the cycle ninjas were. the idea that they would go through all this for just a $10m investment is kinda nuts so there's likely a bit more to the story. and it's still unclear what happened to the reporter and the two other people at his place. obviously the implication is that Junior did it but it kinda seems that he's just a low level goon? were any of those guys ever shown actually killing anyone?

― a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 22 February 2022 17:21 (two years ago) link
I don't think that was anything, just poking around to see if Eli would reveal anything. Junior did say that he came by to talk to him so I'm guessing the story was actually about Eli's wrestling goon past
I don't think Eli murdered anyone but I would guess that next week we're gonna find out that the story about why he had blood on his pants was not exactly true
― frogbs, Tuesday, 22 February 2022 17:37 (two years ago) link
yeah I think the dirt on Eli's wife was basically the reporter trying to 'relieve' Eli into thinking he didn't know anything about the REAL shit he was up to in his past, and that he'd be more willing to give a softball interview about his wife's rudeness and as a side benefit, could show he didn't duck teh reporter. but Eli don't roll that way.

right Amber willingly stepping into a bus she knew Eli was going to be murdered in doesn't make sense BUT I did think the Gemstones maybe had their own drivers so the motorcycle crew knowing where they'd be was kind of odd. idk this show stretches reality quite a bit so I'm expecting something crazy
that said the one thing that really bothers me is that "Eli Gemstone" is his actual name, even when he was a goon slumming it in Memphis.
and yeah Macaulay Culkin was great, perfect casting

i just attributed Kelvin's feat to cinematic adrenaline, similar to how there have been IRL anecdotes of people of average build lifting a car or doing other impossible feats of strength in times of danger.
i am coming around to Amber doing it, in a way. esp since they didn't reveal the Lissons AND, Eli's dad comes around to giving them the money for the Lissons, but he only tells Jesse and not Amber, and Amber is still frustrated that he's not been elevated to his position.
perhaps she thought the heroism would ward Eli off if he heard his own kid got shot at.
idk

― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 17:58 (two years ago) link
well Baby Billy did have an NDE and in the last episode its revealed that he believes himself to be communicating with Aimee-Leigh from beyond the grave
Amber's involvement does make sense but I still don't feel she would willingly get on the bus if she knew Eli was gonna get murdered in it. either way it seems like the goal is beyond that $10,000,000 investment now
― frogbs, Wednesday, 23 February 2022 18:13 (two years ago) link
my brother pointed out that Amber knew that Eli was being moved from the hospital, so idk the benefit of willingly sending the gang to the wrong place.
re: the bus, if she set it up, then she told them to miss intentionally. it does seem hard to believe semi-automatic weapons at that distance spraying that area didn't even nick them.

I liked that the Lissons were shown to be just as inept as the Gemstones. They were basically exactly the characters that you assumed Jesse & Amber were. And Lyle really did want to be friends with Jesse! He thought he was doing him a favor! Yeah it's dumb as hell but it's neat when the criminal masterminds turn out to NOT be four steps ahead of everyone else at all times, and that in fact most of the twists are just them fucking up

funniest moment for me was Jesse trying to panic hide the body

I think a big thread of next year will be an investigation into Zion's Landing, because there's no way the prominent investors could completely disappear not only from the investment, but from their megachurch/etc without people (like Joe Jonas) sniffing around, wondering what happened. like I'm sure some government officials might be interested in how the Gemstones suddenly acquired the entire project.

We've been cruising through the current season not least because my wife *loves* this show, but honestly I've been struggling a bit with the relentless assholery of everyone (albeit mitigated by the pervasive puerile weirdness of the whole enterprise). It's kind of just a trashy(er) "Succession," though again, soooooooo weird.

Finished this season. This show is so bizarre I can't believe it's on the air, let alone chugging through multiple seasons. It's like HBO gave a bunch of precocious home schooled 15-year olds and their dads a blank check to just explore their general batshit ideas and crusade for on-screen dick depiction.

xp
It's not like this is the first successful Jody Hill/Danny McBride joint on HBO. Clearly it's a thing people like.

It's funny, my wife *hates* his other shows, she just likes this one.

and perhaps uncoincidentally contains some very high-level Goggins

Vice Principals is a riot
when you see early Goggins in The Shield you don't much of a sense, or at least I didn't - that he had the potential to be so fucking funny

the people they casted as young Jesse, Judy, and Amber are so insanely spot on it's kind of freaky

also I gotta say I appreciate the way this show makes each season its own separate plotline where there aren't any real cliffhangers during the season finales. as much as I like great longform dramas like Better Call Saul and Succession it is pretty irritating to have to wait 18+ months between seasons by which point you've forgotten a lot of what's happened in the last one

such a weird show all over the place in tone and genre like some weirdo korean movie, but the real attraction is shithead dialog, i prefer eastbound and down cause its totally focused on danny mcbride taking shit but i gotta say edi patterson is on his level, judy gemstone amazing work

xpyeah the actor who plays young Jesse is uncannily good at mimicking McBride's delivery (Judy less so, imo, but that's a tall order for a young actor), it's kind of mesmerizing.
I like how the flashbacks show how scripted the show is. The characters seem like they stem from the actors so much, I would have assumed there was a lot of improv.

frogs otm - I feel like there is an actual term for it and I can't remember what it is, but it came up specifically around the early seasons of Sons of Anarchy, where every year there'd be a huge cliffhanger that would set the tone for the following season, but things would always eventually wind up status quo anyway by the end of the season, and lots of prestige shows would do that and it drove me nuts.
I like that Gemstones usually resolves theirs by final episode because the fun of the show is just how bizarre it is, the weird, abrupt tonal shifts between hilarious and serious-as-a-car-crash, the one-liners, the constant sibling rivalry, Goodman's constantly fluctuating accent, etc.

yeah there's definitely something very odd about it - outside of McBride's other shows what it most reminds me of is Arrested Development, both in that it's about a family of spoiled adult children and in how dense and incredible the comedy writing is. like there are jokes all over the place in this show, and they're often all over the frame too - if you rewatch an episode you'll catch a lot of stuff you missed the first time because there's so much there and they don't try to draw your attention to every funny thing the way a lot of bad comedies do. and most of the characters are so inherently funny that you could laugh at nearly any line they say, like there are 30 quotable bits in every single episode, and even the little reaction shots are hilarious. but then suddenly the show will switch into a high-stakes drama, or an action movie with very expensive-looking car chase scenes, or like a Ryan Murphy show where it goes so over-the-top you don't know how to react, and it all comes off strange because it's primarily written like a comedy. There's a lot more attention to detail in the funny bits than there is the plots it seems - I like the plots but they do often telegraph exactly what's going to happen, only to switch it up with a plot twist that would be impossible to see coming, the sort of thing that the dramas it tries to imitate sometimes wouldn't really be able to get away with. but I love the show anyway, if nothing else I appreciate the willingness to make something so bonkers out of what must be a pretty huge budget.

S3 finale was, by the way, one of the most bonkers episodes of TV I think I've ever seen, it's so crazy that when Peter apparently survives a massive explosion with nothing but a missing leg your only reaction is "well this show is a little fast n' loose with reality sometimes"
