Because I now have the jingle for “Sid’s Pants” in my head and can’t get it out.

Vaguely feel like JBRL may have posted that on social media.

Nope.

Did just find this personal ad in the Sep 20, 1982 issue of New York Magazine:

Barry • I'll Always remember the begin-
ning in "Sid's Pants." I loved you then
and more so now. Lisa

One thing about the Million Dollar Movie- thanks for posting that - is that back in the day I believe it was less common for television channels to show movies so the MMM would show all kinds of good stuff that young Marty Scorsese would watch like Powell and Pressburger’s The Red Shoes, but later they seemed to just be showing stuff the other stations didn’t want over and over again, such as Mighty Joe Young.

Theorbo Goes Wild (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 March 2019 03:07 (five years ago) link

MDM not MMM

Theorbo Goes Wild (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 March 2019 11:03 (five years ago) link

Okay, seems like they used to show the same movie twice a week or maybe even twice a day. Their mainstay studio source was RKO (Radio) Pictures, home of both Citizen Kane and Mighty Joe Young. Not sure now if this is where Young Marty S saw his first P&P pictures, even if Michael Powell called his autobiography Million Dollar Movie.

In New York, there was a television show called the Million Dollar Movie, which would show a film twice a night for a week. And so one week it would be Citizen Kane. Edited. With commercials. And with the "News on the March" sequence missing. Ha! That was the first time I'd ever seen it! Then, you know, you'd get The Third Man, with half the film cut out. But one of the films they showed was Powell and Pressburger's The Tales of Hoffmann. And it was cut down to about an hour and 40 minutes or so, black-and-white, with commercials. And it had a quality like The Red Shoes – a darkness, and a humour

I couldn't find a video that seemed canonical, either.

Watching those extended blocks of commercials is some serious La jetée-level time travel stuff.

RIP Sy Sperling.

I never actually went there but were Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom commercials aired a lot? I remember those and the Action Park ones.

I’m still stuck on the Dagostino one. I remember as a kid on Long Island thinking that it was such a real city supermarket. Years later I transferred to NYU and was housed in a midtown hotel during my first semester. The day I moved in my mom took me to a Dagostino to get groceries and I remember thinking - Wow I really live in the city now! Lol.

Feel like I was even more likely to hear the radio commercials when I was upstate.

There was a pretty good Steve Coogan Alan Partridge joke involving this beverage which surprised me at the time because I for some reason thought it was Tri-State- or at most US-only.

This is interesting:
https://www.nytimes.com/1976/08/24/archives/advertising-rca-shifts-color-tv-strategy.html

Many spokesmen on radio and TV commercials have become celebrities, particularly when they are the principal owners of the businesses they talk about. If you don't believe it, catch the “Midday Live!” program on Channel 5 today at 11:30 A.M.

For in addition to what may be considered typical talk show guests—such as Rita Moreno and Jerry Stiller of the new film, “The Ritz”—five “stars” of the world of commercials are slated to appear. They are Frank Perdue of Perdue Inc., Tom Carvel of the Carvel Corporation, Sam Goody of the recordstore chain bearing his name, Leo Wiser of the Automobile Club of America and Sy Syms of Syrns clothiers.

What's the story?
