So, I can't promise ghoulish puns like I did with the horror poll, but after discussion on the Hitchcock POX thread, this is our next ILX movie poll topic! Nominate away. (No timeline yet for when the voting period opens. Just moving the discussion for now.)

What about creators who mostly worked together? E.g. do we vote for "Michael Powell" and "Emeric Pressburger" or is there an option to vote for "Powell & Pressburger"? I'm actually mainly asking this because I want to vote for Jane Arden but she mostly only worked in conjunction with Jack Bond so I'm not sure whether to just nominate her or to nominate "Arden & Bond".

Unless the point was the juxtaposition, not seeing any first-unit director credits here.

Although his stunt and second unit credits are way more plentiful, Baxley does have 33 1st unit director credits on imdb (mostly tv and DTV), but the reason I listed him is from 1988 to 1991, he directed three of my favorite action movies ever: Action Jackson, I Come in Peace, and Stone Cold.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Friday, 10 November 2017 15:02 (six years ago) link

Question that goes around in circles forever: I assume "greatest" means your personal favourites, as opposed to some dispassionate attempt to weigh film history (in which case, you may as well just reprint TSPDT's list).

Tougher for me will be whether to vote for who are my favourite right now, or to step back and take a longer view. Specifically, I'm talking about Scorsese, Coppola, De Palma, and other American '70s directors. They made a few films long ago that profoundly affected me, followed by three decades of almost uninterrupted disappointment (to the degree that I stopped being disappointed at some point).

I can. Clair Denis may be my favorite currently working director but I wouldn't call her the greatest. Haneke is truly great for me but inexplicably hated on ILX while being seen as one of the greats or thee great outside of this bubble. \

or maybe I'm reinforcing your point.

xp morbs, has barbara kopple ever again made a great film after Harlan County? She has nothing listed on imdb between 1976 and 1990... I had the impression that HCUSA was kindof it for her.

plax (ico), Thursday, 16 November 2017 18:24 (six years ago) link

She was part of the collective that made Winter Soldier in '72, one of the best Vietnam War-themed docs, and won a second Oscar for American Dream, which I've never seen. I quite like her Woody Allen portrait Wild Man Blues, particularly the nightmarish scene near the end with WA's 90something parents.

But there are dozens of people in this list who didn't make one great film.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 21:32 (six years ago) link

I don't think more than 50 is a good idea if we're trying to pick la creme (also some voters would struggle to name 50 non-Marvel directors).

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 17 November 2017 21:46 (six years ago) link

Oh, I think more than 50 slots would be a fucking awful idea. I'd be more into like 25 or so? But as I tend to say on every nomination thread, I like nominations to be comprehensive so that I have a list I can refer to and go "oh yeah, forgot about that one!" Basically, my memory sucks and I need help.

I am pretty worried that this list is just going to be a crappy retread of other best director lists, and I'm also already having high anxiety about voting for Polanski, which I am definitely going to do but I feel 100% shitty about. To be fair to him I'll probably vote for other shitbags who happen to be less notorious too.

emil.y, Saturday, 18 November 2017 02:34 (six years ago) link

Polanski is likely to be in my top 10. Just a fact.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Saturday, 18 November 2017 14:04 (six years ago) link

I'll vote for Polanski only if he happens to die by the time I get around to sending my ballot.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 18 November 2017 14:49 (six years ago) link

I won't think for a second about what kind of person I'm voting for. I don't know if Polanski (who may or may not be on my list--the old peak value vs. career value question) would be the only one where that's even an issue; most of the people I won't know anything anyway, and I hadn't planned on a James Toback vote. I could see grappling with that if it involved flying someone in to receive a state honour, like the Legion of France, but not with a message-board poll.
