Halloween - Classic or Dud?

its a complete load of bollocks isnt it? good excuse for a costume party maybe but then why should you need one?

blueski, Monday, 21 October 2002 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

The UK-version of Halloween - "Gissa fiver before we pour petrol through your letterbox" = Dud.

Alfie (Alfie), Monday, 21 October 2002 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

especially dangerous given that, due to its proximity to Bonfire Night, fireworks are easily available in all the shops. (btw bonfire night around our way seems to start mid october and end mid november judging by the explosions.)

was in the supermarket last year around this time and wondered why all the young kids were buying boxes and boxes of eggs. they couldn't all be having omlettes for tea could they?

(who calls it 'tea', not 'dinner' 8)

koogs, Monday, 21 October 2002 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

This being my first year of having my own front door (in the past I've lived in other people's homes or in a big apartment building), I am actually kind of excited about handing out candy. I bought two pumpkins to put outside too.
I love Halloween-themed rock shows, because I like that creepy rock music.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 21 October 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

a slice of PIZZA with an AXE cmon!!

Josh (Josh), Monday, 21 October 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Rubbish - and another reason for shops to make a packet. Does anyone remember mischief night (4th Nov)? It seems to have died out now. Every year we'd have our front gates removed by kids, who'd dump them them in someone else's garden...

Jez (Jez), Monday, 21 October 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Halloween if there is something going on, and if the goings-on are really serious about the theme and the atmosphere (i.e. scary in a serious manner or that of a "rock show" theme as Sarah likes it.) It's just a matter of making an event out of it--I have had many Halloweens that have been a real drag because of squandering.

And yes, it can be commercial bullshit, but it doesn't have to be.

Ashley Andel, Monday, 21 October 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I think its been too comercialized and people have forgotten the real meaning of Halloween. It was the night when true, unadulterated evil was abroad.

Mind you - young children knocking on your door is the closest a lot of us get to pure, unadulterated evil these days.

(Evil > being a bit annoyed).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 21 October 2002 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I had so much fun with fireworks in my youth, halloween is pretty classic. Did everyone elses neighbourhood have one house where the inhabitants took it upon themselves to chase anyone who played any kind of prank on them and thus they attracted every child around. I remember the same house calling the police before, ridiculous stuff.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 October 2002 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Always classic. Even more classic = going somewhere to a party so you can eat candy rather than giving it out.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 October 2002 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Halloween is excellent. If you have a upstairs, that is. Duct tape your letterbox shut, and keep a bucket of water in a room upstairs - preferably above the door. When you hear a knock, go upstairs, and after checking out that it isn't the Fuzz come to see you for throwing water all over unsuspecting children below, throw the water all over the unsuspecting children below. Brilliant.

lol p xx, Monday, 21 October 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, and Halloween is also classic for the Alien Chicken Supreme:

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 October 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

The John Carpenter movie is gd.

Is it an urban myth that 'E.T.' popularised the idea of Trick or Treating in the UK?

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 21 October 2002 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

as i came home on the bus there was a big police wagon, blue light flashing, parked outside the VERY DODGY LOOKING "firworks only" shop that opened overnight on essex road

i am sure they're all law-abiding up the wazoo, but it def looks as if the motto is "yes yes yes we DO sell bomb-clusters banned in all civilised nations to kids as young as five, hurry hurry while stocks last"

mark s (mark s), Monday, 21 October 2002 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

What did you buy?

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 21 October 2002 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think it's very big in Britain. Bit of a dud really.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 21 October 2002 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that *you* in that Alien Chicken costume, Ned?

C J (C J), Monday, 21 October 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope. But it was taken in my house.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 October 2002 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

halloween as the commercial enterprise is dud, so is trick or treating. but i like the real thing of ' all hallows eve' with the evil abroad etc.

donna (donna), Monday, 21 October 2002 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooooo, DUD for the reasons Andy Koogs mentions. I've ranted at least twice on other threads so I'll leave it and try not to strop at Ronan (I mean, not really him personally, just as the person who's come closest to endorsing the "fuckin' ace, an excuse to blag free stuff, trash whatever we want and fire fireworks at anyone who gets in our way" attitude, grr).

Then again I am just a grumpy old curmudgeon, I get pissed off at carolsingers too. [shouts, out of tune] "uh WEWISHYERAMERRYCHRISTMAS fa la la gissafiverthenarright... charity? what, um, nah... I mean yerr, it's for a great charity, oh, ok, no, just for me, innit? know any proper carols, what, like jingle bells? c'mon, only fifty p? tchuh, well, fuck you then..." Oh no! I AM SO OLD AND GRUMPY ALREADY! Aaarghhhh...

Rebecca (reb), Monday, 21 October 2002 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

It's all about the free candy. And dressing up like a witch or a zombie! What's not to love?

Maria (Maria), Monday, 21 October 2002 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

No, but the one on the right is Otis Wheeler, who used to post here. If it wasn't for Otis talking smack on ILM every damn day ILE probably wouldn't even exist.

I saw Stephanie again recently on Canal St, Ally. She looks different.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

But is she acting different?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

No, exactly the same as in the picture - half-asleep and clutching parts of herself. Her butterfly wings must have molted or something though because they're not there anymore. Maybe she is turning back into pupa??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

god, just had our first trick or treaters, little buggers.

north americans really like this "holiday" hey?

actually actively hate fancy dress

harold melvin and the bluetones (jim in vancouver), Monday, 31 October 2016 18:36 (nine years ago)

yes i enjoy drawing pumpkins and witches and such with my niece, so i guess i'm not quite childless in this regard

also i find the notion of a parentally chaperoned mischief night amusing

mark s, Monday, 31 October 2016 18:41 (nine years ago)

Anyone who lets society restrict them to a single day when it's acceptable to dress up like a poop emoji is a damn coward.

seven years pass...

I don't remember snow on Halloween being a thing until recently. But in the last several years I can recall multiple instances (including today) wherein Halloween marked the first snowfall of the year. That's for sure a big fat DUD afaic. JUST WAIT LIKE ONE FRICKIN' DAY, STUPID WINTER.

Material Wetness (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 31 October 2023 13:41 (two years ago)

My first Halloween in Chicago, 1993, it snowed several inches.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 14:22 (two years ago)

Fucking Classic for having an excuse to watch umpteen horror movies.

I watched Rob Zom's Halloween for the first time last night, thought it was pretty good.

Ste, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 14:49 (two years ago)

The last time it snowed here on Halloween, 2019, there was enough that the ground was covered by the time trick or treaters came around.

feeling old because i'm exhausted by this? everyone stop saying 'spooky season'. every store stop putting up halloween displays the day after labor day (i.e. the first monday in september, for non-yanks). liking shitty horror movies is not a personality. LEAVE AUTUMN ALONE

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:33 (one year ago)

There was a pumpkin sitting on the bar, competing for space with the stacked empty glasses. The bartender moved it and said she would replace it. After her shift.

calstars, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:38 (one year ago)

halloween is a thing i just don't care about

he/him hoo-hah (map), Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:39 (one year ago)

I mean autumn is the best season but halloween is like a celebration of everything that rules about autumn including the sad parts
you've got to strike the right balance between Irish halloween traditions and some Samhain stuff and sophomoric yank lunacy

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:40 (one year ago)

i'm fine with giving halloween like, a week!

i resent having the entirety of october and much of september given over to it

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:48 (one year ago)

(and tbf i appreciate that 15 years ago all the little girls could basically only be leia and now they have a lot more options)

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:52 (one year ago)

this is the meteorological calendar I would ideally want:

summer - 10 mos/yr
halloween - 3 mos/yr
sledding - 2 weeks/yr

retail is crazy (plz stop putting out xmas stuff the day after halloween) - September is too early for halloween I agree!
b/c September is for pretending it's still august imo (sorry mookie)

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:54 (one year ago)

I'm half with mookie and I fuckin LOVE Halloween. but Halloween is not the Spirit store opening, or Halloween candy for eating when it's still ninety-plus outside. Halloween deserves the turn of the season, that's part of it. people in shorts & tanks are inherently unspooky except in a very non Halloween way. 10/1 should be the kickoff by law and I'd be cool with pushing that to 10/7. we don't need two months for halloween, it spoils the fun of it

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:58 (one year ago)

calstars, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:58 (one year ago)

yeah that's exactly right

idk I think I need more time for halloween tho

math class - 0 mos/yr

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 28 September 2024 02:03 (one year ago)

having spent almost a decade working in bookstores i at least appreciate that halloween, unlike christmas, doesn't involve six weeks of specialty music

i used to love christmas music and then i got broken

yeah I wanted to do a horror soundtracks ballot poll for October tbh but I'm gonna be way too busy with the coven etc

you liken the transition between seasons to the lifting of a veil - that time is halloween
& that is the thing in the world I most want to celebrate
it's transitory - it has to be - but I wish I could stay there a while longer

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 28 September 2024 02:19 (one year ago)

oh i have a killer halloween playlist -- you're even on it for 'damn these vampires' and 'werewolf gimmick'

but it doesn't involve me having to listen to any vaguely christmassy shit at work for weeks on end. this is a union issue!

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 September 2024 02:25 (one year ago)

one year passes...

I am finally liking Halloween as an adult (I loved it as a kid). I bought a huge amount of candy and sat out on my stoop to observe it all. I had 40 or more trick-or-treaters come to my door, since there is now a block party a couple of blocks away from me. They were almost all about 5 years old or under, some just toddlers, in amazing costumes - princesses, policemen, panda bears, astronauts, k-pop demon hunters etc., and they seemed dazed. It was great. I gave candy to the parents and tourists also.

The themes were fairy lights, tote bags, peanut allergies, and kids who were too young to say trick or treat
