Jackass: the movie

Who is excited and waiting for this to come out?
(I think it's Oct. 25th in America, and Jan 24th in the UK.)

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 14 October 2002 03:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jesus, no-one, I would hope. Jackass is the Sex Pistols of stupid, with the added advantage that some of the people who go "Yeah! I could do that!" will end up dead.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 14 October 2002 08:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Andrew = on crack!!

I can't bloody wait, in fact I've got a mate in Thailand ready to send me a pirate dvd as soon as they hit the stalls in Bangkok.

The trailers look fantastic.

chris (chris), Monday, 14 October 2002 08:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Okay then, defend it. Explain what is worthwhile about people damaging themselves on camera. Pay particular attention to the distinction between it and You've Been Framed/America's Funniest Home Videos.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

see the thread I started ages ago. Everyone needs some mindless fun in their lives and Jackass is it for me. Admittedly I'm not a big fan of the clips where they con or make fun of hapless passers-by, there it steps into the realm of trigger-happy tv etc which you speak of but when they do the stunts etc it can be exhilarating, for example Tony Hawk and Matt Hoffman on the loop the loop jump into the lake, absolutely awesome.

chris (chris), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

that other thread:
Jackass c or d

chris (chris), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

I actually like the ones with the passers by. I hated when Dom Joly did the sketches with old people though, easy targets and also they all seemed quite taken in.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

curses, Chris had spotted my secret Cool Thing I Saw On Jackass (the loop the loop)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 14 October 2002 10:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

has anyone seen the CKY movies?

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 14 October 2002 10:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

you can't argue with the Loop, dude.

and on that, Bam was damaging himself, yes. But only because he wanted to do the thing so goddamn much.

an infrequently mentioned classic has to be the iceblock sledding, so simple, so much fun!!

not seen cky yet, although when solvent again I will be getting a few.

chris (chris), Monday, 14 October 2002 10:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Andrew WK is on the soundtrack Andrew with his bestest song yet!!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 14 October 2002 10:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

ah, the CKYs are really great. they're doing another movie called 'Haggard', or so i hear. with actual plot & stuff. hmmmm. not sure if there's gonna be a CKY4. anyone know?

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 14 October 2002 10:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, I read about Haggard on one of the fansites. Rake Yohn (long haired bloke who gets antiqued and doesn't like it) is the main character from what I remember.

I did hear about Stevo being arrested for public indecency recently after stapling his scrotum to his thigh in a nightclub.

chris (chris), Monday, 14 October 2002 10:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

i think steve-o's stapling thing was for his own video, imaginatively titled "the steve-o video" i believe. i didn't know Rake Yohn was in it lots, but i heard it was based on Ryan Dunn's (guy with er, shit on his lip) weird love-life. but what do i know?

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 14 October 2002 10:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

hmm, I may be mistooken, but Tony Hawk definitely place a cop

chris (chris), Monday, 14 October 2002 10:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

I love Jackass, I didn't know they were doing a movie. I won't be able to see it at the cinema though because it makes me laugh too much and then I have coughing fits and I don't want to lose all dignity in public, even if is dark public. It takes me about 5 days to recover from watching each episode.

i'd never really watched the x-files - has it always been so comedy?!

i've never understood that, either. it must be pretty awful. especially people who watch it, but then look away/cover their face during the painful/gross out bits.
why are you watching it at all!?
i watched that episode where they sit there drinking a gallon of milk because i knew they'd spew it up again, not because i like watching people drink milk.

a rapper singing about hos and bitches and money (Enrique), Friday, 8 September 2006 14:58 (seventeen years ago) link

i always thought it really funny that the Onion AV Club sent their only female critic to review the flick, who had absolutely no idea how to process it. It's like the editors realized that the movie was critic-proof, so they figured they have a bit of fun by sending the chick reviewer to see it.

The difference between Jackass and Dirty Sanchez is that the only "entertainment" value in DS comes from them hurting themselves, it's like a skateboarding video writ large. In Jackass, the stuff is funny even if they don't get injured. I'd give examples but, y'know.

Just about the only thing that could make this movie any gayer would be cameos from John Waters and Rip Taylor and a closing Busby Berkley-style musical production number. Oh wait, it's got those too.

When Waters gazes over the American landscape and sees what his revolution in bad taste has wrought—vast armies of suburban teens lining up to see grown men drink horse sperm, do sadistic things with dildos, and vomit profusely—he must feel awfully proud.

Homoeroticism does have a long history in suburban skateboarder culture(where all these guys come from). hell, my best friend from high school would talk about the weird shit at skateboard camp.

I did not see the first one in the theater as I had yet to have my jackass-guys-are-hot eureka moment. So I'm very much looking forward to it tomorrow. Also we are seeing it at the Alamo Drafthouse which means food + beer with movie. yay.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Friday, 22 September 2006 19:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Easily the funniest thing I've seen all year, BUT:

1. Not enough Johnny Knoxville. Bam and Steve-O get more screentime, and the other players get even more than them. I don't mind Steve-O and a couple of the bit-players, but Bam is a bitch for the most part.

2. The Spike Jonze bits suck.

3. Much more mean-spirited and sadistic than the first movie or the TV show. The first one was defensible as physical comedy, pure and simple - I could recommend it to my parents and they loved the movie. This one, not so much, it's got a much harder edge, more gross-outs, and you have to get off (to some degree) on watching people be miserable.

4. Bodily fluids AHOY

milo z (mlp), Friday, 22 September 2006 21:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm glad I hadn't read a review that spoiled the Berkley ending.

I think I might join the chorus of gay gays going "mmmmm...homoerotic!" if I didn't faintly suspect some of Jackass crew weren't the victims of sexual abuse as children.

Actually, I'm not sure I really believe this but I kinda do like saying it for the buzzkill.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 24 September 2006 20:18 (seventeen years ago) link

that doesn't make any sense.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Sunday, 24 September 2006 20:21 (seventeen years ago) link

My understanding is that self-injury is one later manifestation of sexual (and other kinds of) abuse; whether it is in fact in a league with things like cutting, bulemia, etc. is something I know nothing about.

One key difference between what happens in Jackass and things like cutting is that people who self-mutilate tend to do it in private.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 24 September 2006 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, I would keep your broad generalizations to yourself.

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Sunday, 24 September 2006 20:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not sure what broad generalization I've just made other than "people who self-mutilate tend to do it in private," which actually undercuts whatever argument I've made.

OK, the thing about gay men approving of Jackass is also something of a broad generalization but it's one played out in my small cirlce of friends and...other places.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 24 September 2006 20:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Although you admitted that you were trying to be a buzzkill assuming that the jackass guys must have been abused children b/c of what they do now is making some pretty broad assumptions and just a generally sucky thing to say. Is every adolescent who skates handrails an abuse victim? You think you can pick out people with fucked up pasts so easily?

Sam: Screwed and Chopped (Molly Jones), Sunday, 24 September 2006 20:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually, I kinda do think that violence directed towards the self really does strongly suggest past trauma, even if it's not a universal or a given (nb: I said "faintly suspect" earlier).

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 24 September 2006 21:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually, I think I'm gonna drop the subject because I fear this all could get rather heavy in the wrong way rather fast.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 24 September 2006 21:11 (seventeen years ago) link

To summarize my feelings I shall very poorly paraprahse a Dave Chappelle stand-up bit:

Dave orders chicken in some deep south restaurant. The man says he knew that's what Dave was going to order. "How did you know that?" Dave asks, surprised. "Because everybody knows black people and chicken go together." Dave says, "I was very upset. I was not ready to hear that. Here I was, thinking I liked chicken because it tasted delicious. Turns out it's because I'm genetically disposed to like chicken. Now I'm afraid to eat it in public. 'Look at him. He sure loves that chicken'"

From wiki:

One of the stunts Bam Margera stated he intended to film was entitled "The Worst Wake-up in the World" in which himself and Ryan Dunn would wake up Bam's fellow friend Brandon Novak with "Defibrillator's, then urinate onto his face, throw flour on him to cake the urine, punch him in each eye, and then release six vampire bats into the room, and lock the door".

I would've watched #2 a lot sooner if I knew how much succulent Bam ass was in it.

Def sicker and meaner than #1, I flinched and cowered more. Partial to "Fart Mask."

ah it looks so stupid i cannot wait :D

i watched the shark week thing they did on discovery, it was kinda forced & stupid as hell as expected but i kinda loved it

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 July 2021 17:09 (two years ago) link

There was no shark bite follow-up?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 July 2021 17:11 (two years ago) link

they kinda follow up within the episode? he shows back up with his forearm in a kind of soft cast thing and they do a straight forward dive after the bite segment to show that sharks wont bite you if you dont cannonball into their hood

it was basically “all’s well that ends well dont do dumb shit around sharks”

I would so love to watch this with my soon to be 7 year old but realize that would probably make me a terrible parent. But man would it be hilarious.

no, terrible parent, you’re right lol

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 21 July 2021 00:42 (two years ago) link

The whole series and all the movies should be in the Criterion Collection. In packaging at least as fancy as their Godzilla set.

i watched all of these recently and while the fellas are physically running out of gas by 3 it's all still up there with my favorite cinema of all-time

Clay, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 01:10 (two years ago) link

i think it has a lot to do with how much they genuinely like each other & the inherent youthfulness in the stupid joy they give each other & the audience. i think that makes it weirdly eternal

also nut shots

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Wednesday, 21 July 2021 02:19 (two years ago) link

One thing I also love about Jackass is that they nearly always pull pranks on each other rather than random people, and it has a remarkably KIP vibe for what could easily get ugly

I tried to rewatch one of Bam's CKY movies recently and had to turn it off. The vibe is gross, lots of slurs, mean pranks on strangers. Even though it has a bunch of the elements I like about Jackass

Vinnie, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 23:31 (two years ago) link

Vinnie, Thursday, 22 July 2021 00:23 (two years ago) link

I've showed my kids a couple of clips here and there and they just don't really get it. I've gotta assume a steady diet of tik tok et al has innured them to some of it's charms. At the same time, there are some Jackass gross eating gags I just don't think I can stomach anymore. Downing freshly expressed horse semen? Eating a vomit omelette? I dunno, man ...

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 July 2021 12:16 (two years ago) link

I don't remember if they're from the show or the movies but I can't watch the fishhook or paper cut sketches

Vinnie, Thursday, 22 July 2021 13:05 (two years ago) link

yeah the paper cut bit is by far the most upsetting one for me, have never been able to watch it.

thats interesting about your kids josh. never thought of it that way but i guess that raw skate video clip look that felt so fresh and exciting at the time (no host, no sets, not plot, no point) is the dominant format of online video now & must not look special at all to young eyes.

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Thursday, 22 July 2021 13:23 (two years ago) link

first time I saw the first movie was in high school with like 15 other people, literally no one could watch the papercut scene. its annoying but I guess that's part of their thing, it's not Jackass if they can't freak out the entire audience

frogbs, Thursday, 22 July 2021 13:53 (two years ago) link

Mentioned before, but a hunk of the Jackass crew was maybe two years younger than me at my high school. Lots of the show and movies feature destruction of/at sites in and around my home town. Couple of the jackasses bullied my younger sister so bad (I was gone by then, iirc) she left school early.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 July 2021 13:59 (two years ago) link

first time I saw the first movie was in high school with like 15 other people, literally no one could watch the papercut scene.

Because it's a lot more relatable than some of the other stuff. Croquet ball in the nuts? A rare experience. Savage paper cut from a manila envelope? We've all felt that pain.

I am so excited for this movie. Hope Wee Man gets a decent amount of screen time. I rewatched two of these recently and honestly I think my favourite scene was him not getting that the chair was electric and that he was convinced they had a secret card throwing machine.
