i'm glad a new record store still places value on good older vinyl and isn't just a wall of bins of $30 animal collective reissues or whatever.

i am also going to six organs of admittance on the 27th, the pop group on march 10th, and faith no more in april. anyone going to that sparks valentine's day show? or babes in toyland at the roxy? (i see that babes are also doing a set at pappy & harriet's; there are still tix for that and they're only $20, if anyone wants to offer up their car for a road trip.)

Would normally be at Sparks but I'm up in the Bay Area next weekend. And will have to mix Six Organs, sadly! Timing, it happens.

Is it possible to drive mulholland drive to Malibu? Last time she tried my sis says she ended up on a dirt road. What do we do at that point?

Virginia Plain, Friday, 20 February 2015 20:34 (nine years ago) link

There's a section that's unpaved between the 405 and Topanga Canyon. Go to Topanga and catch Mulholland west from there.

hey so how does one find an apartment (/room) in this city

tender is the late-night daypart (schlump), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 00:47 (eight years ago) link

Craigslist is probably the most common way. Westside Rentals is an agency you pay that is widespread, but I've heard mixed reports about them.

Another way is to go to the neighborhood in which you want to live and walk around, looking for "For Rent" signs. I've had luck with this approach more than once.

ALL THE INSTRUMENTS AGREE: an exhibition or a concert is a two-day program of back-to-back live performances by over 25 local, national, and international sound artists, music collectives, art bands, and visual artists whose practices extend into the production of sound. Conceived as an exhibition in the form of a concert, the continuous program of performances will alternate between two outdoor stages in the Hammer courtyard from noon to 10 p.m. each day.

if your kids like trains, check out the train rides at Griffith Park. I don't know how old your kids are obv but:

http://www.griffithparktrainrides.com

Also, the California Science Center down by USC is cheap and they have the Space Shuttle Endeavour there. I recommend Super Bowl Sunday (assuming you're not watching the game); we just went this past Sunday and it wasn't a big crowd, I suspect bc of the playoff games.

http://californiasciencecenter.org

I can recommend a few family friend joints to eat at too, finding places that are good with kids can be hit or miss. This ain't Chicago or Portland.

nomar, Wednesday, 27 January 2016 18:52 (eight years ago) link

The kids are 5 and 1. The little one won't know what's going on for the most part.

We're doing Disney Land one day while we're there, I wonder if there will be fewer people there on Super Bowl Sunday or if a weekday would still be better.

Hi Los Angeles people. I'll be there on vacation all next week. Would love to meet people if feasible. Would also love any recommendations on food or shopping or other fun, easy activities. I've been out there various times, but feel like I've only ever scratched the surface. I suspect there's a lot that I'm missing I'm staying in Long Beach, so things convenient to that area would be great, but I'll have a car and am willing to drive around too.

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Thursday, 11 August 2016 15:51 (seven years ago) link

imo the most beautiful place in la and surrounding areas is the point vicente lighthouse in palos verdes. if you go this saturday, you can get a tour but i'm not sure how good it is: http://www.palosverdes.com/pvlight/

i just love walking around there to relax and get away from all the madness. the times i've been there it's been quite peaceful

there's a couple caves if you do a bit of walking past terranea resort

for another pretty mellow walk check out the lake shrine gardens in pacific palisades -- more of a eastern religion/buddhist place but lots of different people walk in the gardens

what type of food do you like?

i can recommend some easy hiking trails if you want, but i wouldn't recommend it unless you don't mind scorching hot weather (next week is going to be really hot)

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 11 August 2016 16:36 (seven years ago) link

i'm assuming you've done all the popular stuff like the getty in brentwood and the newest museum the broad downtown, which you need really advanced tickets for

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 11 August 2016 16:39 (seven years ago) link

Nope, I think I'm going to the broad this time. But a lot of the typical stuff I haven't done and don't necessarily have on my radar.

As far as food, I'd be interested in trying out good Asian options in particular, but would really be open to anything good and fairly affordable. Not planning on doing fine dining.

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Thursday, 11 August 2016 16:45 (seven years ago) link

korean food:

seongbukdong (my personal fave -- been here plenty of times but not recently)
beverly soon tofu restaurant (fave place to get soondubu)
ahgassi gopchang (best intestines in ktown/la i've heard, i quite like it)
kang ho dong (super popular kbbq place owned by this famous korean dude)

annnd if you like bingsoo, i highly recommend sul and beans

in terms of japanese...nothing of note (spoiled by eating in japan)

best ramen:

daikokuya in downtown la (not sawtelle)
followed closely by tsujita ANNEX (on sawtelle)

honestly i don't eat sushi in la, but if you really want to, try sushi gen but see if you're willing to put up with the prices

a lot of the better japanese places in la are fine dining. you can find a couple decent ramen places in torrance. been to a few but i don't recall their names right now.

if you're in torrance i would hit up kula, which is conveyor belt sushi. they're a small chain, but i'm told this location is the better one

and if you're into craft beer, sunset beer co in echo park!

the echo has free shows every monday night. i don't recall if it's after a specific time, but i would get there around 10pm

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 11 August 2016 21:00 (seven years ago) link

i think moby owns a vegan joint around there (maybe silver lake, not sure) that my friend went to and said was underwhelming, too. i guess taix are doing more than just classic French country cuisine, but i've tried the mussels, endive salad, snails and i can vouch for the French fare being excellently prepared fwiw

Bandol soleil for the St. Tropez tan (outdoor_miner), Thursday, 11 August 2016 21:08 (seven years ago) link

i fucking love taix. so romantic.

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 11 August 2016 21:10 (seven years ago) link

moby's got his vegan place little pine in silver lake, not to be confused with pine and crane, which is taiwanese iirc. the latter is really good, the former i hear the same mixed things.

taix is a good place to hang out, it's a bit more chill than you'd imagine and the bar area is nice too. tam o'shanter is a similarly old school and fun spot. there's a newish british-style pub in echo park called the lost knight, which is sort of the medieval times of british pubs imo. like a lot of newer spots around these parts it feels pretty transitory.

in terms of LB-adjacent stuff: i went to point fermin park in san pedro last weekend, which is beautiful - the lighthouse tour was fun and free (they do it three times a day, in the afternoons). a really cool thing near there is the sunken city, which is the ruins of an evacuated beachside city that was decimated in a landslide in the 1920s (you have to sneak around a gate to get there since it's technically not open to the public but it's totally worth it). you can also check out the korean friendship bell while you're there. angels gate cultural center is around there too, a former military barracks converted into arts studios (similar to the headlands up in marin) - they have art shows and the like. we ate at a *great* lebanese joint in SP called nazelie's. lots of v. old-school dive bars around there but couldn't tell you anything about any of them. LB's got tons of gay bars clustered around one strip if that's something yr into. i've only been to LB a few times but i really dig it, it's a lot cooler (temp-wise) and relaxed compared to LA.

i love taix but don't really go there very often. i really like masa and guisados (the latter is now essentially a chain - they started in boyle heights and now have branches in echo park, DTLA and west hollywood). prado wine bar in echo park is nice if you go there during non-peak hours - i don't really like going out drinking there. also be warned that with dodgers games happening that parking in echo park is sometimes next to impossible.

donna rouge, Thursday, 11 August 2016 22:04 (seven years ago) link

whoops, "i don't really like going out drinking there" = i meant in echo park, generally. but i like prado.

donna rouge, Thursday, 11 August 2016 22:05 (seven years ago) link

food-wise: will second pine & crane (i was underwhelmed by it the first time i went there but liked it a lot more on my second visit many months later). there's an upscale-ish thai street food place near there called night + market song that's great, and a newish burmese place called daw yee just opened a little further east on sunset - the tea leaf salad is crazy good

donna rouge, Thursday, 11 August 2016 22:14 (seven years ago) link

as far as mexican food in that area, i think el condor is the only sit-down joint i really like. mexico city on hillhurst isn't really that bad, i guess. just went there for the first time. better than i anticipated.

Couple of important food areas near Long Beach... Going to Westminster/Garden Grove for Vietnamese food is pretty much mandatory. Brodard on Westminster Ave. and Thanh Mai on Bolsa Ave. are my faves, Quan Long Hoa and Pho Quang Trung would be my next choice. Thanh Mai is open until 1:30am - I've become a regular.

Long Beach has a small Cambodian community with some great restaurants - Phnom Penh Noodle Shack on Cherry is the first place to go. Hak Heang on Anaheim is also very good and occasionally has a live band playing Cambodian pop classics.

There's at least a dozen or so Indian restaurants along Pioneer Blvd. in Artesia. I haven't kept up as the scene is always changing there but I usually go with whichever place has the most polarizing Yelp/Chowhound reviews.

Gardena has a couple of great ramen places. My go-to is Shin-Sen-Gumi Hakata on Redondo Beach Blvd. May just be my favorite ramen place in the Sprawl.

Jonathan Gold's essential 101 is a good place to start: http://ballots.latimes.com/lists/101-best-restaurants-jonathan-gold/

The 13-year-old was arrested on suspicion of battery and making criminal threats, and a 15-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault and battery

WTF! such bullshit

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 23 February 2017 18:43 (seven years ago) link

Tuesday’s confrontation began over what Anaheim police described as “ongoing issues” with the juveniles walking across the officer’s property. During the argument, police said, a 13-year-old threatened to shoot the off-duty officer, prompting him to attempt to detain the teen.

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 23 February 2017 18:52 (seven years ago) link

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 23 February 2017 18:56 (seven years ago) link

details are nebulous but it sounds like the boy was on the off-duty police officer's lawn and he told him to stay away. the kid threatens to shoot him. the off-duty police officer attempts a citizen's arrest

what is he going to sue him for?

off-duty police officer should get some type of punishment for taking out his gun and shooting it though

is it worth giving the la times my bank account info for a 6 month subscription so i can figure out what restaurants we should hit up? what are people's favorite dispensaries?

i lived around the block from there for several years and it is indeed a good neighborhood joint. or if you want to hit up hillhurst at a different time of day, the mustard seed cafe a block or two away is one of my favorite breakfast/lunch spots in la.

at any time of day, it's worth your time to walk 10 minutes from there to check out skylight books on vermont ave. there are a bunch of good food options on those couple blocks of vermont, too, such as figarot.

Public transit into Angeles National Forest being planned for first time in 130 years

For the first time in 130 years, forest lovers might once again ride public transit into the Angeles National Forest, a vast area of mountains, hiking trails, creeks and pine-shaded picnic grounds that make up almost three-quarters of Los Angeles County’s open space.

Because the only way to reach the 700,176-acre green space towering above Los Angeles is by car. Access is denied to underserved county residents who don’t own a car or have no access to a private vehicle.

To change that, U.S. Rep. Judy Chu, D-Pasadena, presented the nonprofit Nature For All a check for $995,000 on Aug. 28 to begin planning and building the Mount Wilson Express Shuttle, a van or bus service starting from the Metro L Line (Gold) Memorial Park Station in Old Pasadena and connecting to western forest locations.

It is the most money received by the nonprofit in a single grant. Chu also placed a request for $750,000 in the 2023 House of Representatives appropriations bill, which would raise the shuttle program’s funding to $1,745,000, if approved.

Early plans call for a regular, weekend shuttle that will take passengers on the 210 Freeway to Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2), with forest stops at the Mt. Wilson Observatory, the Haramokngna American Indian Cultural Center at Red Box, Clear Creek Information Center, and trailheads at Eaton Saddle, Colby Canyon and Gould Mesa, explained Bryan Matsumoto, program manager for Nature For All.

BrokenBookSellers on IG names Vroman's/Booksoup as #1 of the 10 worst bookstores of 2022.

Congrats to Dolores Bauer for all her hard work making Vroman's our other #1. Dolores, you win nothing.

We received more stories from Vroman's former and current employees than from any other store, some we could not publish for fear of retaliation. Almost all whistleblowers told us some of the worst bookstore stories in this page's history, many inventive in their cruelty and heartlessness. Bauer hunts her employees like sport. TW: A few of these stories in the panels to come discuss sexual harassment.

Where do we start? Where do we end? We spent half the day sorting through the stories to make these graphics and it broke our hearts all over again to read.

Had an event at Redcat on Saturday so I officially tried out one of the new metro stations: Grand Avenue/Bunker Hill. The station is just *right there* across Hope St. The new alignment for the Gold A Line makes it a one-line shot. It's eerie when big public infrastructure just works.

FWIW, there weren't any spontaneous games of Thunderdome on the A line. I haven't ridden frequently enough to notice trends, but things seem ... less intense? My home station is still weird at night though.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 3 July 2023 13:54 (nine months ago) link

haven’t gotten the chance to explore all the new stops yet, except for the new little tokyo station which looks great.

the weekend the regional connector opened i took the former gold line train, which stops near my place in highland park, all the way down to long beach without having to transfer trains - on the way down it took less than 75 minutes, no interruptions. could not say the same about the way back, unfortunately - there was an electrical issue at one of the north LB stops which added almost an extra hour (!) to the trip.

also i take the former gold line to the former red line to get to work and i much prefer transferring at 7th over union station for my commute - just having to go up/down one flight of stairs to transfer at the former beats that 5-minute schlep between trains at the latter.

donna rouge, Monday, 3 July 2023 14:58 (nine months ago) link

Crossroads / The Exploding Digital Inevitable
July 30, 2023 - 7:00 pm
Billy Wilder Theater

Admission is free. No advance reservations. Your seat will be assigned to you when you pick up your ticket at the box office. Seats are assigned on a first come, first served basis. The box office opens one hour before the event.

In 1976, groundbreaking collagist, sculptor and filmmaker Bruce Conner released his magnum opus, a 36-minute assemblage of U.S. government footage of the iconic Bikini Atoll atomic bomb test. If Conner invented the modern found footage film with A Movie in 1958, he re-invented it with Crossroads. His editing of the film's brilliant "dual" score — by seminal minimalist composer Terry Riley and synthesizer pioneer Patrick Gleeson — evokes a surreal beauty latent in the devastating images that comprises one of the most profound meditations on the nuclear era extant.

The Exploding Digital Inevitable is a live documentary essay by Ross Lipman, who oversaw the restoration of Crossroads in 2012. Integrating an array of movie and audio clips, still photographs and rare archival documents, Lipman tells the story of Crossroads' unique production, as well as the massive cultural spectacle of the original Bikini Atoll tests themselves. It also chronicles the extraordinary collaboration of Conner with Riley and Gleeson, including original interviews with both composers. As part of this program, The Exploding Digital Inevitable will be presented jointly with Crossroads for a total run time of 90 minutes.

(Crossroads is considered to be a a big obvious influence on Episode 8 of Twin Peaks - The Return. never seen it before!)

Tropical Storm Hilary formed Wednesday morning along Mexico’s western coast and is forecast to bring intense rain to Southern California early next week. If it makes landfall, it would become only the fourth storm of at least tropical storm strength to hit the area.

i have read some articles speculating this system would bring 2-3 years worth of precipitation to some areas. i take that kind of speculation with a big grain of salt, but after the shockingly intense deluges we had earlier this year, i'm also not necessarily dismissing it out of hand.

(I know nothing about LA but remember the recent drought being in the news)

The lakes will benefit, but so much precipitation just runs off into the ocean.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 18 August 2023 17:17 (eight months ago) link

The reservoirs are largely full now, so no help on that front. Tulare Lake may get even bigger, which is good for the aquifers but bad for farmers.

nickn, Friday, 18 August 2023 17:18 (eight months ago) link

apparently the rotation means east of the mountains is going to get it much worse.

Regardless of intensity, the most dangerous aspect of #Hilary will be the rainfall, and that will be most severe in the deserts east of the Peninsular Ranges. Many areas there will see 4-8 inches of rain, with local amounts of a foot or more. That's 2-3 years worth of rain! #CAwx pic.twitter.com/DuuG4MWxb1

Model average + NWS forecast has 4" of rain in Imperial, CA over the next 3-4 days.

That'd be more rain than Imperial's seen in the last 4 years combined (3.59"). #CAwx #Hilary pic.twitter.com/Q6Kb5kVKG8

Some good analysis as of right now: https://weatherwest.com/archives/29462

Basically, anywhere along route 86 along the west side of the Salton Sea seems like a very bad place to be. There's cool places in Imperial County, though I grimly think of that water tank in El Centro that has "Sea Level" like 80 feet over your head. Fingers crossed for the folks out in Slab City.

I keep thinking of that chapter in Kim Stanley Robinson's The Ministry Of The Future, where a megastorm washes all of Sierra Madre over the 210 and into the LA basin. OTOH, we got 7" of rain here in the heaviest of the January storms. Our prep = charging everything up, putting whatever cardboard boxes we have on the garage floor either on a table or stacked in a plastic bin to keep the moisture out, and getting an extra bag of charcoal for the grill.

I was in Baja California (~750 miles south of San Diego) for Hurricane Odile and that sucked. Similar energy as this one. 4-6" of rain and 100+mph winds.

5 deaths, total damage amounted to MXN$16.6 billion (US$1.25 billion)

The house we were staying at (and evacuated from) was heavily damaged, as was the airport which made getting home a bit of a challenge. The Red Cross helped us with evacuations as roads were flooded/washed out, <3 to those folks.

my understanding is they were chasing this guy on the freeway and if anyone is familiar w/that stretch, it's extremely busy at that time.

Background to all this from Sept. 2021: https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2021-09-26/california-fire-insurance-moratorium-expire

A California moratorium guaranteeing insurance in wildfire-threatened areas lapsed Saturday, putting 347,000 homes in Pasadena and other Los Angeles foothills communities at the mercy of the market.

As many as 2.4 million homes are at risk of losing protection in 2021 as yearlong grace periods expire — though new disasters may extend their shields. In all, 18% of the state’s households could effectively lose protection, the largest single group since the moratorium law took effect three years ago.

“We’re going to pay the bill for climate change one way or the other, and it’s just a question of how we divvy up that cost,” said David Russell, co-director of the Center for Risk Management and Insurance at Cal State Northridge. “What California politicians are trying to do is tinker with how we do that. They’re buying time, hoping they get a break.”

Climate change has been rough on the world’s fifth-biggest economy: Wildfires torched nearly 4 million acres last year and more than 2 million so far this year; the Dixie and Caldor fires, two of the biggest, still aren’t entirely contained.

Fires in 2017 and 2018 alone wiped out more than a quarter-century of underwriting profits for the California insurance market, according to Milliman Inc., a risk assessment company. As insurers rushed to recalibrate risks, consumers were shocked by canceled policies and soaring rates.

In 2018, after the Camp fire destroyed more than 18,000 buildings, lawmakers in Sacramento prevented insurance companies from canceling homeowner policies in or adjacent to wildfire areas for 12 months after the day of an emergency declaration. The idea was to protect consumers after traumatic episodes and to give them time to make their homes more fire resistant. That, ideally, would prevent higher rates or cancellations.

“Even when these moratoriums end, they have given people time to make their homes safer,” California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, said in a statement to Bloomberg, an argument he has made on numerous occasions. “I expect insurance companies to take that into account.”

It’s hard to tell whether this is wishful thinking or effective policy. Even before the law was enacted, California’s highly regulated market was seeing insurers quit the state or refuse to write new policies. In 2019, the last period for which information was available, the state saw a 31% uptick in non-renewals. Over the same period there was a 36% increase in homeowners using the California FAIR Plan, the state’s bare-bones alternative for those who can’t get insurance in the traditional market.

ugh. for what it's worth, i owned an extremely difficult-to-insure LA house until a couple years ago, and i got my insurance through a small local brokerage, prodigy insurance, who were incredibly easy to work with and who went above and beyond repeatedly on my behalf, and i'd recommend them highly to anyone.

fact checking cuz, Sunday, 10 December 2023 20:07 (four months ago) link

I wonder how many homes have been destroyed in California over, say, the past decade?

I suppose wildfires have been prevalent enough that a) our friend's aunt died in the Camp Fire, b) a wonderful Airbnb farm we stayed at was destroyed and all the animals lost, and c) a restaurant we went to on our honeymoon was destroyed.

omar little, Sunday, 10 December 2023 20:20 (four months ago) link

Adding up the yearly statistics at https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/ I get 57,751 structures destroyed since 2013.

A college friend who used to live in the hills above Santa Cruz told me that instead of resolutions, he and his wife began every new year by asking themselves "is this the year our house is going to burn down and destroy everything we own?" Eventually that did happen when the CZU Complex fire not just burned down their house but most of their town too. They got out with what they could throw in their car.

Maybe move

calstars, Sunday, 10 December 2023 20:56 (four months ago) link

The ironic punch line to this is that California isn't even in the top ten of most expensive states to insure a house. It's mostly all the tornado alley states + Florida.

(an acquaintance who moved to Texas for the usual "Southern California is too expensive, shitty, etc. etc." reasons arrived in Texas just in time for the 2021 deep freeze that wrecked their house's plumbing. their home insurance is four times what they were paying in SoCal and now they're having regrets from moving in the first place)

i think what a lot of people who aren't from California don't quite get is the sense of overwhelming bleakness that can be found in some parts of the state, and the sense of lawlessness.

the above murders were enough to make Borderland Beat as a news story -- they almost exclusively cover what's been occurring in Mexico w/r/t drug violence but this could have ties to a larger cartel though nothing was concrete or pinpointed.

not really related, i'm a bit astonished by crime around here and how it's covered sometimes, when i witnessed a drive-by shooting near downtown L.A. i never even found out if the guy survived, nor was it ever reported by a single news source. LAPD didn't tell me a single thing when i called them up. it never even appeared on the official crime map.

a murder that occurred one block away from me a couple years before that was reported by The Eastsider LA and seemingly just buried elsewhere (all i could determine is the guy was a drug dealer.) it makes me wonder what we never ever hear about.
