Is it worth renting one of those steamers if you have really serious stains on the carpet?
Also, general carpet advice for tenants

I had a Stanley-Steamer type outfit (thought not actually Stanley-Steamer) clean my WHITE carpet upon which the OG quincie (the cat) vomited nuclear-orange Meow Mix on the reg. Worked a charm.
Haven't tried the rental units from Home Depot, etc.

stains include: casting resin (probably stuck with that one), jam, and dirt

Dirt will be nbd, jam shouldn't be a problem, but I can't help you on casting resin! What is casting resin?

This stuff works really well for those little dark spots that carpeting seems to always pick up over time. It's also sold as pre-soaked towelettes. Obviously for major cleaning jobs something more is required though.

as for the one you can hire, im sure they'll get the dirt and jam out but theyre a bitch on your back because you have to bend over for the entire process.
a few weeks ago i spilled some water on the floor of my room and a foul odour was the result - i dunno what was on the carpet or in the floorboards, but it began to smell really bad, it was getting worse and worse and a series of options competed in my head, rip up the carpet, phone the landlord, rip up the carpet and phone the landlord. no amount of scented candles would get rid of it, i began to worry about how i'd explain my room stinking of rancid damp, so i went on amazon and bought two industrial strength "neutral smell" carpet cleaners, having read the reviews, one of which was written by a man from yorkshire who described himself as a big metal music loving man and proceeded to note how unusual it was for him, as a big metal music loving man from yorkshire, to be posting about a cleaning product which presumably he felt was something for the concern of women or smaller men who don't like metal.
anyway by the time the two huge bottles of cleaner had arrived the smell had gone - no matter how hard i sniffed i couldn't find it. i was still not entirely convinced it was completely gone, so i sprayed the patch of carpet repeatedly to get rid of it.
all in all i'm glad the episode is over now.
ten months pass...
