wouldn't Qatar have to build hella stadiums? and then wouldn't they just lie fallow from that point on, forever? giving them a WC only encourages that sort of reckless expenditure

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Monday, 29 November 2010 19:41 (thirteen years ago) link

the story I heard is their stadiums would be designed to be taken apart and given to less-fortunate areas in need of playing space

fuck that, USAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Australia, though Qatar makes a surprisingly persuasive case in the ads - Zidane pleading for the youth of the middle east to be given its chance, which is obviously how it'd work out irl

Wtf?! Paddy Power are the only bookies running this and they suddenly have Qatar as red hot favourites - last time I looked about a week ago, USA were top, Aus second, Qatar about 8/1 and Japan & Korea nowhere, but now it's:

Qatar - 4/7
Australia - 2/1
USA - 6/1
Japan - 40/1
Good Korea - 40/1

Qatar's odds've shortened again, slightly:

Qatar - 4/6
USA - 7/4
Australia - 9/2
Japan - 40/1
Good Korea - 50/1

Huge swings in US/Aus odds overnight - my conclusion is that no-one gives a toss about 2022, and Qatar's position is entirely down to the arab a hoy hoy getting all nationalistic with his 50 dirhams.

What time will games be played in Qatar in connect w/ European times? If it is at a time better than Aus can provide, they are sorted.

Qatar is only one hour different from South Africa so timing for Europe shouldn't be a problem.

modrić in paradise (blueski), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

although it derives from the greek stadion (στάδιον) it is actually directly from the Roman 3rd declension noun stadium. so it declines:

stadium
stadium
stadium
stadii
stadio
stadio

stadia
stadia
stadia
stadiorum
stadiis
stadiis

of course στάδιον is second declension neuter in ancient greek so has the plural στάδιοᾰ in any case but one has to get these etymological routes right.

an acquaintance of mine, just back from a tour at the USAF base in doha, on qatar:

True, there is no alcohol... men and women can not ride in the same taxi, even if you are married. They have people that walk through their hotels listening at doors to make sure that no one is having sex, they will confiscate the dvd of Beerfest because of the cover art, it is not discrimination exactly but less than 500,000 of their population are "citizens" (out of 1.35 mil) the rest are what you could call minorities of ethnic ambiguity. Ratios are 4-1 men to women... did I mention there is no alcohol?

On the plus side there is little to no crime, they will not make the World Cup itself, they will pay for most everything FIFA wants.

This is going to be the best World Cup ever!

YAY FIFA!

fwiw: lol iirc sb'd u tbqh (dan m), Thursday, 2 December 2010 20:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Australia does everything it can to collude against football in this country (especially broadcasting), most of the people here STILL insist it's called 'soccer' and that various codes of deformed rugby are 'the REAL football' (the code to which this applies is wholly dependent on the state you're in at the time) and the rest of the entire planet is 'wrong', and to top it off we just submitted a bid video featuring PAUL HOGAN. Qatar probably deserved this despite its offensive conservatism/racism/prohibition.

When it comes to bidding for the next tournament, a country with a sense of humour should put together a satirical bid based around park football and jumpers-for-goalposts, but openly promising €10m each to the thirteen corrupt members, and see how far it gets. I'd've proposed Ireland 2026, but fear that may be a financial burden too far.

I'm not sure the headline framing and use of statistics is particularly helpful, tbh, even if the article is a bit more nuanced. Qatar should be held accountable for failure to follow through on its commitments and the recommendations stemming from domestic and international scrutiny but it's pretty much the only country in the region making commitments or opening itself up to that kind of scrutiny in the first place.

Norway failed to beat Latvia at home, so sit in third place on 18 points, behind Turkey on goal difference.

They're heading for the playoffs, even if they win by a single goal now.

No easy games in international football.

Elsewhere, I'm faced with the possibility that Scotland might actually be quite good. However. Even though Adams scored (again) I still think we need a centre forward. We don't have really have any centre backs either but Clarke's main selling point is his skill at organizing defences.

Edmonton is currently in the middle of a snowstorm that could get up to 8 inches by the afternoon.

Kudos to Poland for sticking to their guns. Wonder if FIFA will suddenly grow a backbone?

"We are not interested in participating in this game of appearances. Our stance remains intact: Polish National Team will not play with Russia, no matter what the name of the team is," he said.

Senegal beat them in the inevitable shootout despite missing their first two penalties.

I mean, just look at this. Salah sails his penalty over… and surely anybody would, given the lasers.

just thinking about all of this. it sounds corny to say, but canada qualifying was the best thing that could happen to this country. you can tell the vibe is changing. the team has achieved its main goal. even if we get eliminated in the group stage, this is already a big win for soccer in canada. anything else is just gravy

Xp group A I'd say, contrary to all the confident predictions that Qatar would get Tunisia, the Chagos Islands and Haringey Borough

When I was up in Scotland I saw (ex-Ranger) Chris Burke talking about the World Cup and saying maybe Scotland should just do the decent thing and withdraw and allow Ukraine to go through, which brought the instantaneous response of "Get tae fuck!" in households the length and breadth of the country.

In retrospect, Japan/S.Korea had both hosted World Cup too recently and, frankly, it was never going to go to Australia which left the USA and Qatar. The USA are getting the next tournament.
