Germany coach Joachim Low is concerned that next week's UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier against Turkey in Berlin could be an away game for his side given the amount of Turks living in the German capital.

That should be a terrific match - those are two fabulous attacking sides.

a 4-2-3-1 is intriguing, tho I don't know if they can play like that yet

dan m, Friday, 1 October 2010 16:25 (thirteen years ago) link

would be good to try and get more midfielders out there, our 1 strong suit

Ives had a 4-3-2-1 xmas tree posted with Jones, Bradley, and Edu as the 3... just call that one "the bone-cruncher"

lineup
4-5-1 w/ edu at centerback huh

Howard;
Cherundolo, Onyewu, Edu, Bocanegra;
Jones, Bradley, Holden, Dempsey, Feilhaber;
Altidore.

i'll be curious to see how high dempsey plays. and gooch is really ready for this, is he? wanna see lichaj at some point

they looked like a team with a bunch of guys who don't quite know how to play together yet, and I still am not sure if 4-5-1 is something they can pull off. jones/holden were fun to watch tho.

avinha, Monday, 11 October 2010 12:10 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm still trying to learn how to watch the game. i want to understand a midfielder's most common passing locations. i want to see passing lanes before they develop. this was jones' first game with us. does the visual representation match what i saw on tv? what doesn't the chart tell me (in this case, about his physicality) ? if i look at enough of these what patterns will i see? i have so much trouble comparing two players against two different teams, could this help?

avinha, Monday, 11 October 2010 12:24 (thirteen years ago) link

where, how, and who did he link up with? (have to reach to remember the who) what was his average pass length?

i'm american, i love stats and charts, this chart may not tell me much but can we be so sure that the tenth or hundreth chart won't reveal something? we never know where tactical breakthroughs are going to come, who will see the game differently. i will stick to national type and hope it's us lol

avinha, Monday, 11 October 2010 12:31 (thirteen years ago) link

^ could totally get behind this level of analysis for spurs, tbh. the analysis of what players do that works during a game. i bet mourinho is up to his neck in this shit.

easy mistake to make, that

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Monday, 11 October 2010 13:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm not knocking the concept either btw - if there's going to be some revolutionary development in the game (there only appears to ever have been two so far as I can tell) then I'm pretty persuaded that it'll come from some kind of synthesis of this and set-plays. I'm sure not going to be able to spot it though.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 11 October 2010 13:41 (thirteen years ago) link

i think it's fair to speculate that improvement on a systemic level can come from the analysis of repeated actions

442, sam allardyce

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Monday, 11 October 2010 14:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I've written about them before, but basically:

(i) the Scottish passing game taking over from kick-and-rush around the 1880s; and
(ii) the whole pressing/offside trap/possession system of Ajax in the 1960s.

We're basically still exploring the world invented by (ii). There's a terrific book (Inverting the Pyramid by Jonathan Wilson) looking at the development of tactics through the ages, not sure if it'll've reached your shores Jibe. There are lots of interesting innovations discussed in it, but those two seem to be the big ones. The others usually mostly happen every few years when one guy stands in a slightly different position, and everyone else gets confused

avinha, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 17:39 (thirteen years ago) link

we are mediocre huh. lucky for us colombia is so far too

i love edu's composure on the ball. he doesn't make me start drumming my fingers nervously in possession.
it seems like holden out wide takes away a lot of what's best about him: getting involved, cutting into passing lanes. you'd think the idea would be he'd send in crosses from out wide, but i don't think he's had a cross yet.

EJ for jozy? lichaj for spector (hey, he was only burned twice! not bad). any other changes?

avinha, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 01:16 (thirteen years ago) link

lichaj looked good
ummm, other positives?

(we need to put it down on record that our first shot on goal was in the 55th minute)

avinha, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 02:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I was at the Fire/KC game so I missed this. Doesn't sound like much of note. From the descriptions I've read/heard it sounded like a 4-3-3? Last time I saw that Costa Rica kicked their ass.

dan m, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 03:58 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i guess it was a 4-3-3, in the first half. jozy was so marooned and alone i'm tempted to call it 4-3-2-1. but i'm bad with formations. brek shea looked okay, not totally outclassed at this level with his first cap, so that's something. EJ came in at HT and edu went out (i think, i missed some) so the formation changed but i'm not sure how. the second half was better, dempsey with some spark, but yeah, you didn't miss much.

avinha, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 05:58 (thirteen years ago) link

the pronunciation of Lichaj's name sounds exactly the same a "lihai" (厉害) which is a common slang word in Chinese that means "awesome."

worthwhile stats
The average number of caps on the roster is barely eight. Only four members of the side – Guzan, Jonathan Bornstein, Clarence Goodson and Jonathan Spector – can claim more than 15 appearances in an American jersey. Aside from the six potential debutants, another five guys have fewer than eight caps to their names.

sam acre, Friday, 12 November 2010 06:15 (thirteen years ago) link

missed this 'cause of MLS but saw some highlights, this agudelo kid better not be another freddie/jozy who takes off for yurp at the first opportunity and then stagnates on benches or in turkey

the paraguay game should be a good one for a nice quiet night in, hope to see some new blood out there

Frightening, but full of facts that are difficult to argue with. (dan m), Monday, 28 March 2011 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link

jozy looked OK, i thought

agudelo was like a fuckin ball magnet, though, and to my eyes looked like a player not-yet-seen in america. dunno if it was youth or what, but the dude seemed to ~want~ it more than a lot of the rest of the team, imo. way more aggressive.

kinda got the impression that the midfield and the D (esp) were pretty reluctant to really press the argies because they were afraid they would get juked one-on-one and that lil man would skip up to the goal and score. which seems...rational.

really like that nike US soccer logo, btw---would kinda like that style of ammurican sass to be reclaimed from the tea party

yes, ream and demerit

I thought ream was good otherwise, as was bradley. unfortunately the game as a whole was boring as shit.

yeah, crappy game. sometimes ream with those pinpoint passes upfield...just wow, we don't have another defender like him. i was filling a friend in on the game, trying to find a positive, and that's what i ended up with.

seems to me the problem w us youth soccer is as much a scouting ish as it is a talent problem. we're a huge country and I would wager that as many or more kids here grow up playing soccer as, say, in England (before anyone spits anything on any keyboards, recall that we have six times as many ppl...it's not outlandish to think that for every six English ten year olds playing there's one American).

the diff is that no one is paying close attention to young American players. moreover, they don't know how.

just occurred to me that the best/fastest way to pull up young players isn't by trying to pimp the MLS or promise riches in Europe---it's university involvement. if the college game improves/gets a rep as an incubator for talent (like every single other major sport except for baseball...which has a system remarkably like European systems), then maybe we'll see some changes.

it actually makes sense, economically---soccer teams are cheaper to train and equip than football teams, and good uni scouting has to be cheaper than trying to create from scratch a youth system like you'd find at a major euro club. those things didn't happen over night.

g++ (gbx), Saturday, 30 July 2011 00:18 (twelve years ago) link

isn't there an age problem w/ that tho?

iatee, Saturday, 30 July 2011 00:24 (twelve years ago) link

yah i'm not sure how the college system can accomodate the sort of exceptional players you are hoping for

even jozy altidore, who was a promising but hardly prodigious sort, left for villareal at about 19

MY WEEDS STRONG BLUD.mp3 (nakhchivan), Saturday, 30 July 2011 00:32 (twelve years ago) link

no different from the age problem in, like, bball or hockey or w/e

competition for ~scholarships~ (that is, a college education) is what drives a lot of youth development. most kids know that they'll never be pros, but they could get into a school they might not otherwise be able to afford.

g++ (gbx), Saturday, 30 July 2011 00:35 (twelve years ago) link

aren't there already college soccer scholarships?

iatee, Saturday, 30 July 2011 00:36 (twelve years ago) link

not sure college soccer makes enough money for athletic departments to justify a ton of scouting

mookieproof, Saturday, 30 July 2011 00:38 (twelve years ago) link

the difference is that european teams aren't going to stop paying college age kids huge sums of money

MY WEEDS STRONG BLUD.mp3 (nakhchivan), Saturday, 30 July 2011 00:46 (twelve years ago) link

yah i'm not sure how the college system can accomodate the sort of exceptional players you are hoping for

even jozy altidore, who was a promising but hardly prodigious sort, left for villareal at about 19

who cares

we have youth systems in place that produce amazing athletes already. why try and create feeder systems for less than 20 crappy American clubs when you can harness what's already in place. college sports fans obv care more about certain sports than others, but if a big state uni got a killer always-wins soccer team, ppl would support it because ppl love college sports (and go NUTS over them in a way that more closely resembles intl soccer fandom than any of our pro sports).

we have 3000+ univs. start telling kids they can get a BA/laid if they're good at soccer and you'll see results. right now the only hope young players have is the MLS (pays less than the job you ~might~ get with an education) or abroad (fat chance, you suck).

enough phenoms will bubble to the top to fill out our natl team

g++ (gbx), Saturday, 30 July 2011 00:47 (twelve years ago) link

not sure college soccer makes enough money for athletic departments to justify a ton of scouting

of course they don't. but if we're talking about targets to strengthen the game in the US, I think college ball will be more sensitive than...better kids leagues? no need to reinvent the wheel here

g++ (gbx), Saturday, 30 July 2011 00:51 (twelve years ago) link

are those incentives going to work with 7yr old kids? cuz unlike nfl/nba where there are players who didn't begin training til mid teens, elite ~soccer~ players have practised inane amounts from very young ages (xp)

MY WEEDS STRONG BLUD.mp3 (nakhchivan), Saturday, 30 July 2011 00:51 (twelve years ago) link

lol, insane

MY WEEDS STRONG BLUD.mp3 (nakhchivan), Saturday, 30 July 2011 00:54 (twelve years ago) link

the current crop of american players isn't any sort of disaster, they've been steadily improving and producing solid european top tier players like howard, bradley, dempsey.....there's a lack of really exceptional talents but sooner or later they will arrive

these sort of state-of-the-nation discussions about youth coaching are more apt for countries like england which have history/infrastructure/culture and still fail to develop players the equal of comparable nations

MY WEEDS STRONG BLUD.mp3 (nakhchivan), Saturday, 30 July 2011 00:59 (twelve years ago) link

really talented bball players have been developing skills from childhood, maybe just not as 'formally' as some young soccer players

it just seems silly to me to assume that the best thing for the long-term health of american soccer is plucking really young kids out and, what, shipping them abroad to train with foreigners, where they will prosper in total isolation from the people that will eventually be their "fans"?

you mentioned that 19yo jozy went abroad---where do talented 19yo hockey players (who, incidentally, also start really really early...like 4-5yo) go? COLLEGE. if we focused on getting people interested in the college game, it could serve as the same sort of finishing school as it does for our other sports. if we focus more on developing young kids and putting them into farm systems either domestic or foreign that ~no one cares about or watches~ then we're developing players at the expense of developing the actual sport

g++ (gbx), Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:04 (twelve years ago) link

*really* talented 19yo hockey players are in the nhl (but sure)

mookieproof, Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:07 (twelve years ago) link

it's a chicken egg problem, of course, because as mookie said, no one watches college ball right now. i'm not sure what US Soccer could do to actually ~help~ improve the quality/profile of university teams, but i'm sure someone clever could think of something. and it would be way easier, cheaper, and more "american" than the alternative.

like, for real, if the NCAA soccer championships were televised and played in a biggish stadium, might that not attract interest in an "if you build it they will come" sorta way?

xp you know what i mean, dude

g++ (gbx), Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:08 (twelve years ago) link

and again, the scholarship thing can't be stressed enough: there's loads of kids out there who are trying they're asses off to get improve their game because it might mean school---they already know they're not gonna be pro hockey players, but they might get some glory and a decent job afterwards

g++ (gbx), Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:09 (twelve years ago) link

the scholarships already exist tho!

iatee, Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:09 (twelve years ago) link

and it's sorta hard to justify any more athletic scholarships, for anything, when put in context of how our universities work

I think your argument hinges more on 'get people to care about college soccer' than anything else

iatee, Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:10 (twelve years ago) link

that formulation is virtually ex-nihilo (xps)....even if the other conditions exist to make american college soccer desirable, the presence of foreign teams who regularly offer huge salaries to college age players will lure the best ones away

MY WEEDS STRONG BLUD.mp3 (nakhchivan), Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:10 (twelve years ago) link

if the NCAA soccer championships were televised and played in a biggish stadium, might that not attract interest in an "if you build it they will come" sorta way?

that may well happen....but it will exist as an entertainment rather than an avenue for elite player development

ncaa baseball world series are televised and for the most part people don't care. even people who like baseball!

iatee, Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:13 (twelve years ago) link

I think your argument hinges more on 'get people to care about college soccer' than anything else

― iatee, Friday, July 29, 2011 8:10 PM (7 minutes ago) Bookmark

well sure! and in caring more about college soccer, HS/youth programs will get better. and yeah, sure, our top top players will get spirited away to foreign clubs, if the project is Get America To Care About Soccer in the long-term, then bypassing college level ball altogether seems sorta foolish.

should be a period in there

g++ (gbx), Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:21 (twelve years ago) link

that's all very well but you seemed to be talking about Getting America Some Players Bettter Than Oguchi Onyewu

for raising the profile etc, sure

if in some counterfactual history europe had some equivalently popular NCAA, i'd imagine it would be good for football, maybe less so for universities

MY WEEDS STRONG BLUD.mp3 (nakhchivan), Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:26 (twelve years ago) link

i was iphonin it and sort of developing a thesis on the fly. scouting/training youngsters intensively might get us some better players in the short run, but raising the profile will be better for soccer in the long run.

i dunno---i guess i've heard a lot of ppl on the internet say that the one thing that soccer needs to be magicked into a real sport is a world cup win, but we win olympic medals all day long and it's not like anyone cares about fucking swimming

g++ (gbx), Saturday, 30 July 2011 01:31 (twelve years ago) link

This topic has been discussed to death and beyond on BigSoccer. Not saying we shouldn't talk about it here, just that it's been gone over and over and over by aspie US fans for years.

The NCAA game is part of the problem as it currently stands. I don't believe it can be made into a solution, either. For one thing, they play with f'd up rules like unlimited subs. Their season is also crazily short compared to a real club season. That's why so many of the players go play for PDL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USL_Premier_Development_League) teams when they're not in school. Scholarships for soccer encourage the "JUST WIN" mentality among kids and parents where raw athleticism is favored over technical ability. That's fine as long as you're gunning for a free ride to school, but beyond that the lack of skill becomes apparent really fast. Out of the current best 11 of USA nat'l team players right now I can only think of one (Dempsey, who has a pretty amazing personal backstory anyway) that came up through the college ranks. I don't think he was in for more than a year or two before going pro. Pretty sure most everyone else either went through the Bradenton academy or grew up overseas and learned there.

The real answer, imo, is an expansion of the Ajax and other euro-style academy systems, something that is happening but still in its infancy. Bradenton is US Soccer's attempt at fostering that kind of environment, but it needs a wider network of clubs running the things with the sole goal of finding and developing players to really pay dividends on the world stage.

the american 'at least you get to go to college if you flame out' system seems...less evil than the euro-style academies

iatee, Saturday, 30 July 2011 19:02 (twelve years ago) link

(I mean prob not w/r/t high profile ncaa football players, but that's another issue)

iatee, Saturday, 30 July 2011 19:03 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, i think it's pretty sad how many kids here are thrown on the scrapheap with nothing to show for it

MY WEEDS STRONG BLUD.mp3 (nakhchivan), Saturday, 30 July 2011 19:03 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah it's totally evil. One thing that has been a reason for optimism lately are NCAA eligibility rules regarding kids who play/develop in pro environments. Starting like last year they can still qualify for scholarships even if they've been playing w/ pros and I *think* even paid to play. Not sure on all the specifics but it's encouraging.

*changes to NCAA eligibility rules

keillor can folk anything. and he will, and has. (dan m), Saturday, 30 July 2011 19:04 (twelve years ago) link

But I mean if the discussion we're having is "how do we help kids who have good game get scholarships" than yeah, that's been happening. If it's "how do we develop cutting-edge players to go out and win big for 'Merica" then we're just kind of treading water.

keillor can folk anything. and he will, and has. (dan m), Saturday, 30 July 2011 19:06 (twelve years ago) link

did you read that long nyt piece on ajax' academy

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/06/magazine/06Soccer-t.html

can't fault their effectiveness but the treatment of the rejected kids is pretty cold iirc

MY WEEDS STRONG BLUD.mp3 (nakhchivan), Saturday, 30 July 2011 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

You can question the effectiveness of Bradenton / the USSF though, at least in getting the most promising kids. Rossi was maybe always headed back to Italy but it seems to me they could have had Subotić and Rogelio Funes Mori if not for various fuckups.

boxall, Saturday, 30 July 2011 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

what, shipping them abroad to train with foreigners, where they will prosper in total isolation from the people that will eventually be their "fans"?
I don't see why this is a problem. If they succeed and join top teams in England, Spain, Italy their matches will be televised and they won't be in isolation anymore.

boxall, Saturday, 30 July 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah Bradenton is far from perfect, it seems to me like it was some idea they ginned up in the 90s and it did pay some dividends. The fuckups leading to losing Subotic et al are systemic and a lot of people are hoping that will end now that various coaches (the u-20s in particular) have been fired. The thing that Klinsmann wanted all along was top-to-bottom control, perhaps they've given that to him now.

Oh and I have read that NYT Ajax article and I fully agree it's cold as shit, not something that I would want to subject my children to if I were a parent. On the other hand it seems like a pretty foolproof method for getting results. :/

Here's a recent example of youth players getting signed early

http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2011/07/chicago-fire-signing-gulley-as-homegrown-player.html

So basically it comes down to rights. The Fire have this kid on the roster, he makes a little bit of cash but he gets to train w/ pros in a pro environment and can play in reserve league matches w/o jeopardizing his college eligibility. If he makes it big, he can stay with the team and win games and eventually get sold if he's good enough. If not he can still go to school (and with some of the youth programs in MLS like Generation Adidas the league & sponsor will pay his way). It's a little less heartless than the Ajax model.

keillor can folk anything. and he will, and has. (dan m), Saturday, 30 July 2011 21:50 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, the loosening of the rules for who qualifies as an amateur in the NCAA's eyes seems like a great idea.

boxall, Saturday, 30 July 2011 21:58 (twelve years ago) link

Oh and after rereading part of the thread: The best hockey prospects play in major junior leagues and generally don't go to college. Only the real cream of the crop guys from college even get a sniff of the pros. It seems like a lot of goalies have been coming up through that route of late tho.

"Twice before, just the timing was not right. You know, I didn't feel right," said Klinsmann, who lives with his family in California. "And now it kind of came altogether and I felt, no, you know what, the comfort level is there. You know, the understanding of the job is there. I mean it needed maybe to grow in a relationship point of view a couple of years until I said, you know, this is OK. This is now kind of the mature moment for it."

I think creativity in the mid will come from Adu & Torres in the short term. Can't wait to see Holden back in the lineup eventually. Diskerud is in the middle of his season, right? Bet he'll get the call vs Belgium.

no it doesn't. you can switch once if you haven't appeared in a senior, competitive match

mizzell, Thursday, 4 August 2011 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

Our singlemost failing, imho, is a lack of attacking flair and i don't see that changing here. We concede goals not just because our defense is shakey but because other teams know that our counteres and ability to press our attack aren't great. Donovan's OK and Buddle shows promise but w/o more killer instinct and finishing ability, we're merely chancers, albeit w/heart.

I'll take Agudelo all day over Buddle, personally. Possibly just grasping at Jozyesque straws with the kid, but he has shown a real willingness to take defenders on and go for every chance he gets.

Cherundolo was better than decent at the weekend. In fact he was v good indeed. Excellent positioning, good concentration, effective simple use of the ball, and one bone crushing but fair challenge. He doesn't (or at least didn't in this game) get forward much to lend support to the right winger however.

Chievo was the dullest, least creative team I watched at least twice last season, maybe Bradley could become prolific again like he was for Heerenveen a long time ago.

fuck sake scotland, i was looking at a match report there thinking maybe they fielded a weakened team, and while there's some players missing it's a fairly "strong" (in relative terms) first XI.

zverotic discourse (jim in glasgow), Sunday, 27 May 2012 20:25 (eleven years ago) link

It's maybe the most depressing cold-hard-footy-truth I can remember. At least taking humpings from Portugal or Holland, you knew they were always secretly our betters, we just beat them sometimes. But Scotland and the US weren't ever in the same class when I was little, and they're certainly not now.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 27 May 2012 20:46 (eleven years ago) link

i have the good fortune of not caring all that much about the national team, but even vaguely following the team and feeling goodwill towards it has became painful.could easily see scotland not make a world cup in the next 20,30 years, and they used to be almost perennial participants.

mizzell, Thursday, 31 May 2012 00:00 (eleven years ago) link

Some positives to take from this I guess, except for the defending. Fabian Johnson a greater threat from left-back than most of the attackers. I like Bradley-Jones-Torres in midfield, don't see what Edu offers though.

Brazil no. 10 Oscar looks like a real talent.

boxall, Thursday, 31 May 2012 01:26 (eleven years ago) link

sucks so much that holden got injured and can't replace edu in this midfield, think if he could bring his 2010-2011 bolton form to the team they'd be really tough

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Thursday, 31 May 2012 21:37 (eleven years ago) link

the defense would still be a problem against solid competition, but yeah holden jones bradley would be great.

mizzell, Friday, 1 June 2012 01:59 (eleven years ago) link

most interesting thing about that game was canada's new shirts, oh and the bizarre goal called back

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Monday, 4 June 2012 03:05 (eleven years ago) link

here's an argument for what edu offers

Having deployed the 4-3-3 Jurgen Klinsmann long advocated to great effect against both Scotland and Brazil, moving the ball around with gusto and creating chances by the bushel, the U.S. went back to a 4-4-2 – or a 4-4-1-1, or whatever – against Canada.

This formation undermined the progress the U.S. has made. In the pre-Klinsmann dark ages, a 4-4-2 with two deep central midfielders perennially put the Yanks on the back foot, making them a counter-attacking team forced to absorb a great deal of pressure in hopes of being granted a chance or two to break away. In Klinsmann's 4-3-3, the U.S. can usurp much more possession, involve its full backs and free up two of three central midfielders to join the attack and orchestrate from the inside of the field. But by removing the Number 6, usually either Maurice Edu or Kyle Beckerman, a knock-on effect disturbed much of the team, negating the extra center forward it put on the field. Without a man to cover for them, central midfielders Jermaine Jones and Bradley were forced to hang back more, preventing them from crowding the opposing midfield in its own half and distributing. This, in turn, forced the deep striker, Clint Dempsey, to fall back and help out on defense, making him easy to mark out of the game. The advanced striker, Gomez, thus became isolated and the wingers, Jose Torres and Landon Donovan, were insufficiently involved and advanced, blocking the path of the wing backs to push forward.

By taking out the holding midfielder for a trequartista, in other words, Klinsmann made his side a much more defensive one than before. The effect was noticeable, as the U.S. mustered only the rare chance and had trouble commanding the midfield. LS

I'm reading a lot of talk on twitter etc where people are straight bashing some of the n00bs that got called up, saying they don't deserve to be there b/c it's Mexico, and nothing is more important than beating Mexico. WTF? What about finding new starting CBs that aren't 30+ years old? What about putting some real pressure on these kids in a game that doesn't _really_ count and seeing who steps up? The beating Mexico at all costs myopia is what partially got the team in the state it's in to begin with.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/soccer-dirty-tackle/jamaica-strategy-opponents-come-kingston-them-high-then-212052612--sow.html

The U.S. will play Jamaica in a World Cup qualifier at the National Stadium in Kingston on Friday -- a place known to opponents as The Office since "no one wants to go to the office." But as Tropigol.com explains, this isn't your typical office (unless you work at High Times magazine):

That atmosphere can be a bit intimidating and quite unique for international sports since there's the pungent scent of marijuana that has been known to permeate from the crowd. During the 2001 World Cup qualifiers, U.S. players said they could smell the drug as a cloud of smoke hovered over the crowd on a sunny Saturday June afternoon.

"They say when they come there, they smell marijuana," [Jamaican midfielder Dane] Richards said.

this is gonna sound corny as fuc but here goes: i've been getting high (outside) and going to sounders games by myself for about a year and i CANNOT believe how much more, tactically, i've gotten out of the games. off the ball movement, width, 1v1 matchups, tactical shifts, all are more clear. and yeah it could be that i'm going by myself (not concerned if gf/friend is bored), watching more in total, whatever, but man, i suggest it, one hitter quitter and sit and ~~watch~~.

when we went to the grand opening of red bull arena in 2010 there were some massive bluntz circulating in the stands. in retrospect I can't believe we didn't get thrown out/arrested.

didn't get a lot out of that tactical-insight-wise beyond "damn I wish we had joel lindpere" and "oh shit we are going to suck this year".

3. really impressive tifo. kinda funny they adapted ECS & TA chants, but better than U-S-A over and over.

5. a journalist i follow who has been to 35+ games in the c-link press box said that after jozy's goal was the first time the press box shook. i lost my voice screaming after it. that stadium holds in the sound like no place else.
6. WOOOOOOOOOOO

ok, i am getting in: gold cup portland ticket purchased, flight to cbus booked

anky, Saturday, 29 June 2013 18:04 (ten years ago) link

booked my place near the stadium, getting hotel carter vibes from the reviews:

Rooms ok. Stained linen. Tiny pillows.. broken floor tiles in bathroom. Only one ice machine for entire hotel.. and it caught on fire. So no ice.

I knew there was not too much to expect for this price. However, besides stained sheets and moldy smells, bad cable and poor wifi, I did not expect bloodstains on the floor in front of the night reception

This is a very shity place u have to walk to the office to get your towels they brought us pilows n told us to bring them back when we check out beds where too small toliets broken tub dirty

The next morning I was very itchy and had little bumps on me.

That second cr goal hurt a lot to watch.

D@v3 M. (dan m), Sunday, 8 September 2013 01:10 (ten years ago) link

i said this on the WCQ thread, but we looked pretty poor last night (i didn't see the first half), barely able to string passes together or keep possession for a significant amount of time. Michael Bradley is the most important player on this team, imo. good points were landon who showed a lot of fight and was able to deliver quality set pieces and Goodson who got his head on a lot of balls in the area and looked really solid. Beasley kept finding himself with lots of room, making long runs and then pissing away the ball in a most deflating manner. i love Zusi's beard.

anky: now you're getting it

his LIPS !!! (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 16:29 (ten years ago) link

I was happy for them but I kept feeling it was more that Mexico looked absolutely dire more than we looked good. Not terribly dangerous in attack and we got particularly lucky in the back. Any team in good form would have easily equalized against us given the amount of space we gave Mexico at times. We definitely miss Bradley...

Ma mère est habile Mais ma bile est amère (Michael White), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 16:54 (ten years ago) link

success in international football, or my perception of it, has really declined to now just being not as dire as the opposition

his LIPS !!! (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 16:55 (ten years ago) link

otm

Mexico were superior the majority of the first half but seemed to have completely given up in the second. No enthusiasm for getting forward. Bradley's absence was huge, but Mexico had some absences too (I don't think Ochoa would have played the ball as badly as Corona did on EJ's goal, for starters). A friend said, "Beating Mexico is sort of a national pride big deal, beating ~this Mexico~ isn't really that big of a sporting deal." And I stick to that.

Still, lol Mexico.

D@v3 M. (dan m), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:51 (ten years ago) link

What the hell has gone wrong with the Mexican national team? I thought big things were expected of them after the Gold Cup win in 2011 and the Olympics win last year.

Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:28 (ten years ago) link

Who the hell knows. Success going to their heads? Lack of self-confidence? Too much pressure? Sounds like they're bringing Víctor Manuel Vucetich in as the next coach (Tena only a caretaker?) so that might make for a change.

Lichaj back in the mix again is interesting, though pretty much everything I've read about him indicates he doesn't have what it takes. Luckily for him, though, none of the other pool fullbacks seem to have what it takes either.

dan m, Monday, 11 November 2013 15:34 (ten years ago) link

Lichaj always looked "sub-standard" edging towards "pretty bad" whenever I saw him playing for Villa fwiw. And competition in Villa's back four hasn't exactly been stiff these last three years or so

dan et al, could he offer something to the us?

mizzell, Thursday, 5 December 2013 17:38 (ten years ago) link

I think he might if given the chance. He's great at being in the right place at the right time to score, but he's not really the type to deke a defender on the dribble, to beat them 1-on-1. He's more of a give-and-go-and-bang-it-in type. Great team player, can also play on the left (where he was mostly at for LA w/ Keane, Becks, Lando). Plays with a bit of a chip on his shoulder, I think, for being overlooked for so long. Then again, he's never scored close to 20-some goals in a season before.

dan m, Thursday, 5 December 2013 19:33 (ten years ago) link

subaltern 8 (Michael B), Friday, 20 December 2013 23:22 (ten years ago) link

Ramos has stuck around to coach youth teams, I didn't see a lot of him while he was active but from all indications he was indeed the guiding light at that time.

I thought about Beasley, a lot of people suggested moving Donovan into Wynalda's place and slotting Beas in there.

I'm guessing it's due to the schedule of the Norwegian league, this must be their offseason. I can't imagine a club in a bigger league replacing a fired manager with Bradley at this point. Maybe this will just be a foot in the door for him, he has said for a while he wanted to coach in European top divisions.

FORWARDS (4): Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Eddie Johnson (D.C. United), Mike Magee (Chicago Fire), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)

The camp, which runs from Jan. 6-Feb. 1, will be conducted across two continents. After six days in California, a 23-player group will base in Sao Paulo from Jan. 13-25 to give the players and staff a dry run of this summer’s tournament in Brazil. The second half of that is basically what I've heard, he's getting squeezed out at Roma and that's not a good thing leading into the summer in Brazil. Seems like there's a lot of interest from clubs in Germany and elsewhere in Europe but he needs guaranteed playing time more than anything. xpost

Rushing back for the 2010 WC was a bad move. He wasn't fully healed and that has led to more injury. I always hated him for Houston but you're right, he would have been a contributor for the nats in a way that Jones/Klestjan/Edu/Williams haven't been.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 22 May 2014 21:39 (nine years ago) link

Initial reaction seems to be that Klinsi is already preparing for 2018, which is insane imo.

dan m, Thursday, 22 May 2014 21:48 (nine years ago) link

Landon prepared the way by stating he couldn't and wouldn't train every day, by going walkabout last year, and by being Landon. I don't think it's prep for 2018; I think Klinsmann sees a guy who can no longer bring it every day and knows Brazil is going to be a major physical challenge just to compete.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 22 May 2014 21:57 (nine years ago) link

Still surprising IMO. Also they just don't get on with each other supposedly. I'm kinda bummed have no problem taking a guy who has more World Cup goals than Messi Ronaldo and Van Persie combined.

Psyched that Wondolowski made it!

mizzell, Thursday, 22 May 2014 23:13 (nine years ago) link

It's been in the cards for month, but it's like the media couldn't believe what they were reporting.

Part of me wonders how much Donovan would have been a distraction in a "super sub" role. Obviously, the media would have fixated on it, and it might have had guys looking over the shoulders or resentful. We'll never know, but I think he could have had an impact in that position.

I'm happy Wondo gets a chance, too. He plays the poacher role really well.

cbs+howard fine not a lot to do but generally composed out the back against slowness. didn't see gonzales totally fucking up but i watched on a spotty connection and had to pee a lot
jozy frustrating but helpful? his game is too reliant on the ref. bad touch but good spacing maybe
wondow i just like where he gets to. my expectations of him are so low but he seems to show up.
yedlin i watch like a hawk and he had no out and out terrible moments. dude's quick
johnson was involved, bedoya and zusi looked sharp. set piece delivery in the first half was legit. beasley always looks like he's wheezing.

I didn't see beyond the first ten mins but yeah that has always seemed like an inevitability. That's basically why Beckerman is on the team as far as I've read, because he will stay home better than Jones. Jones has always seemed to me like he's surplus to requirements, especially paired with Bradley.

two good, long articles about jurgen (he says his name is jonathan when ordering at starbucks); nyt argues that he is struggling against americanness, while the wsj suggests he is attempting to form a style of play out of americanness.

favorite tidbit:
Decades later, Klinsmann has embraced even the most mundane parts of America. “I like that someone asks, ‘How are you?’ ” he said. “I always say, ‘I’m fantastic!’ ”

Are Ghana much better than they were in 2010? cos everyone was surprised that they were the African team to go furthest in that tournament. If they beat Ghana, I could see USA getting a draw with Portugal which might be enough to get them into the second round.

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Thursday, 5 June 2014 20:27 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, that's what everyone is saying. I read a quote from Klinsmann that they were approaching the Ghana game as "a final". I don't know a whole lot about Ghana beyond Asamoah, Essien, etc. Popular consensus seems to be that they play very narrow and have suspect defense. The US has some pretty good wide players but the defense is suspect as well. Midfields are probably pretty well-matched.

Nobody out yet, but it has to be coming. This was pretty spot on from Wahl: https://www.si.com/soccer/2017/10/11/us-soccer-sunil-gulati-president-usmnt-world-cup-qualifying-failure

The idea of Julie Foudy at the top of the organization is very interesting. Our women know how to win.

The next elections are in February, the position is unpaid, and he allegedly makes a shitton of money off his travel business (which, surprise, does most of USSF's bookings) and his position with the Revs.

The one good thing I've noticed is more and more of the top journalists covering the federation (Wahl, Goff, the Howler guys, etc) getting much more critical with their coverage of his roles.

Setting aside the fifth-most lucrative sport in the country stuff, would Americans find the European academy system of development palatable? Taking 8-year olds out of school for academy schooling and booting them if they don't improve enough, etc..

In youth baseball there's a movement to make it less of a year round sport - are soccer parents going to be okay with turning it INTO a 10-month sport?

louise ck (milo z), Friday, 13 October 2017 21:46 (six years ago) link

Serious soccer parents are already off the deep end imo, adding months to the season doesn’t seem like a tipping point for that crowd, at least not to me.

El Tomboto, Friday, 13 October 2017 21:54 (six years ago) link

those academies are kinda morally questionable, idk if 'maybe we just need to be throwing young kids into a machine so 1% come out good at soccer' is a great solution.

iatee, Saturday, 14 October 2017 00:45 (six years ago) link

AFAIK there are already Euro style academies here, the problem is they've only existed for a few years and they're competing with pay-to-play clubs and coaches who have been around a lot longer, and hence pull more weight. The goal for a lot of people is getting a college scholarship, not becoming a pro.

I want to change my display name (dan m), Saturday, 14 October 2017 01:00 (six years ago) link

I agree about the academies but I'm also not invested in the USMNT being particularly competitive - I'm happy enough supporting some other country I have a vague rooting interest in when the World Cup rolls around.

Just when you think USSF couldn't get any weirder: https://www.si.com/soccer/2018/12/06/us-soccer-foundation-federation-lawsuit-ussf

The U.S. Soccer Foundation, an independent charitable organization that has invested $125 million over the last 25 years to provide access to soccer, largely in minority and low-income communities, sued the U.S. Soccer Federation on Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Ed Foster-Simeon, the president and CEO of the U.S. Soccer Foundation, told SI.com he was stunned in August when U.S. Soccer requested a meeting in which it said it was ending the relationship between the two organizations—the federation president has always sat on the foundation’s board—and demanded that the foundation abandon the name “U.S. Soccer Foundation” and its logos.

There’s a water fountain at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, a Most Dependable Fountains model SD440 that lost its factory luster long ago. After two decades under the Carolina sun, the silvery sheen on this unassuming bubbler has dulled a bit, its age marked by patches of rust. You can push the button on its side, but don’t expect to be refreshed — the fountain now runs dry.

The SD440 may be forlorn, but it certainly isn’t forgotten. In the spring of 2002, at the very moment that a 20-year-old Landon Donovan leaned in to let its water ripple over his lips, the fountain took its part in perhaps the most memorable photograph ever taken in the history of U.S. men’s soccer. It’s a photograph — you know the one — that remains a running joke among U.S. soccer fans, part of a larger collection of photos that graced the New York Times Magazine in the run-up to the 2002 World Cup. The photos — highly-stylized fashion shots of Donovan, Pablo Mastroeni, Clint Mathis, Brian McBride, DaMarcus Beasley, Cobi Jones and Kasey Keller — remain notorious to this day. More often than not, they’re derided, reduced to an afterthought or a punchline, fodder for trash talk or parody. And yet they’re still referenced, kept alive in the public consciousness, blown up by fans and brought into stadiums around the country.

And now?

Soda Stereo Total (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 3 December 2022 22:31 (one year ago) link

Think this was about their level.

Very interested in who the next coach is. I was never a complete hater but even if you go with an American there are better options than Berhalter.

Also anticipating who steps up: Paxton Aaronson, Pepi, Tillman, Slonina, Busio, and more including names we don't know yet.

Goalkeeping seems sorted after some absurd (for the US) uncertainty. Between Turner, Horvath, and Steffen things are pretty solid there.

Also there's the what if factor. Several players who likely would have been on the roster were injured. Chris Richards in particular could have been starting at CB, where they weren't really hurting until the final game where Netherlands let them have the ball and then picked off passes for counterattacks.

Overall, Adams, Musah, McKennie could probably be the midfield for another 8 years. Pulisic and Weah are solid on the wings for another cycle, Reyna who knows (but hopeful), and Dest/Jedi are also very good.

Finishing? Who knows. Ferreira and Wright both were top 3-ish in their respective leagues and had only a fluke goal between them to show for it in Qatar. Sargent has been doing well for Norwich but didn't show much either.

I have gotten more into this stuff bc I have a close friend who works with the team in a non technical role. Between the Klinsmann, Arena II, Sarachan, and now Berhalter eras it's a lot to take in. I think they're as good now as ever, with some growth, experience at clubs, and development of other spots on the field, who knows what could happen in 26 on concacaf turf?

Gotta be killers in comparison to today, though.

obviously not excusing what Gregg did to his wife back in college, which even he has acknowledged happened, but it seems like it was a private matter that they handled between the two of them, and now it's become public record (quite possibly against her wishes) and purely for the purpose of being angry about a son's playing time.

that's gonna make it real easy to hire the next coach.

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 18:31 (one year ago) link

it would make berhalter or whoever the next coach is look just about as bad to retaliate against gio for the actions of his father (to say nothing of the nose-to-spite-the-face aspect of benching one of your best players when you have like... 5 good players). but i bet it will be awkward!

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 4 January 2023 18:32 (one year ago) link

I mean, it wouldn't be fair, necessarily, but I could see the next coach be reluctant to call him up altogether. easier to say "he didn't fit my current squad design" than to call him up and not play him and get accused of 'benching' Gio.

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 18:34 (one year ago) link

that may happen but it's not like when france excommunicated benzema and still is france. the US can't really afford to just be tossing one of its only world class players overboard, so i'm sure everyone will get over it

u-9 AYSO morelike imho, lmao

Gio Reyna is hardly world class tbh, he's very talented but also very young and potentially injury-prone. He did some stupid shit during the World Cup and that was dealt with—should have been the end of it. I imagine he will be back as soon as the next cycle starts in earnest, barring injury.

Honestly I see this as much more damaging to Claudio Reyna's career (currently sporting director with Austin FC, previously with NYCFC, etc). Like I said, the world of the USSF is small. Actions like this are relatively easy to track down and people have long memories. Eric Wynalda rocked the boat a lot and has basically been blacklisted; it has happened to others as well. (Not saying that is right, but it is reality.)

underminer of twenty years of excellent contribution to this borad (dan m), Wednesday, 4 January 2023 19:15 (one year ago) link

Also there's nothing saying they need to fill the manager position immediately. Dave Sarachan was the interim coach after Arena was fired and that lasted most of a year iirc.
