group 2 is the hardest, if there is such a thing

mattttt, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 02:01 (sixteen years ago) link

How many qualify from each group? Or is it more complicated than that?

caek, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 02:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Ah, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_(CONCACAF). One per group + a runner up gets a play off with South American runner up.

caek, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 02:10 (sixteen years ago) link

It's all kinds of complicated for what boils down to USA, Mexico, who-the-fuck-cares 1, who-the-fuck-cares 2(optional)

Surprised to see Jamaica ranked below Honduras and Panama. Have they got really shitty in the last few years?

caek, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 02:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I will be supporting Jamaica because of Sheffield United's Luton Shelton.

Depends on whether there's a stunning return to form for Paul Peschisolido.

You still got Craig Forrest in goal?

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 09:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Lol Paul Stalteri.

So, Mexico, USA, Costa Rica then.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 09:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Mexico and the USA really should play in the South American tier, then just send all the other CONCACAF nations over to play what's left of Oceania, winner gets beaten 7-1 over two legs by, I dunno, Iran or someone afterwards to stop them qualifying.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 09:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Matt DC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 09:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Is this the sort of gerrymandering that basically gives Australia a bye into the finals then?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 09:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Dear piss-poor Honduras FA,

I'm writing to tell you that you are now required to spend lots of money flying your players half way round the world to play frankly pointless qualifiers against the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea.

I know you can't afford this, but hey, it might stop the USA qualifying, which I'm sure you'd agree would be lolololol.

Yours,

Sepp Blatter

Matt DC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 09:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Honduras are ranked #46 in the world! They have recently beaten Mexico, and held Denmark to a draw.

The final line there should be "Haiti vs winner of Nicaragua v Netherlands Antilles", shouldn't it?

anatol_merklich, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 13:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes. And the final line of Group 2 should be simply "Canada v St Vincent and the Grenadines."

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 13:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Or, rather, every line should have "Winner of" in front of it just like the Canada line, since each of the three groups will consist of four teams when they get to the actual group stage.

(OK, that might be confusing without parentheses such as "Winner of Jamaica vs. (winner of Bahamas v British Virgin Islands)")

(Or have I misunderstood?)

The first half was great, the second had its moments. I'd say it was a fair draw in the end. USA's defense looked iffy a lot of the time. Altidore's goal (the second header) was a thing of beauty.

Laurel, Thursday, 7 February 2008 15:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Drew Moor = shit. Nice cross, but as far as I can tell his piss poor marking allowed two identical goals.

John Harkes kept talking about the youth and inexperience of the team, and for some reason gave Ramiro Corrales as an example. Hell, I watched Corrales lose his defenders eleven years ago when he started with the Metros, and he hasn't exactly gotten faster or smarter in the interim. As for his right foot: has anyone actually see that it's not, in fact, a prosthesis molded from cast iron? Once the Mexicans figured out he was exclusively left footed, they forced him to use his right foot to play the ball, and we got to see some very unusual trajectories.

Convey looked terrified most of the game. He doesn't have any idea how to figure out his passing options when counterattacking, which should be priority A for any USA midfielder.

Dempsey's non-goal was Bergkampesque. I guess he really was barely offside, but how did the ref not see the flag for fifteen seconds?

Totally undeserved 2-2 draw. Thank you Jozy and Tim Howard.

and they both came on as subs last night.

mizzell, Thursday, 7 February 2008 19:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Adu looked as scared against Mexico as he looks cocky at Estadio da Luz. The sight of Rafa Marquez hunting him down like a small, cute animal was, uh, memorable. That said, he ripped the right side of the Mexican defense a new one in the closing minute, and he hit a far nicer dead ball than Donovan, who seemed to take nearly every free kick or corner kick.

Edu: something about his obvious anxiety reminded me of the kind of basketball player known for alwaysmissing the front end of one-and-ones late in close games. Maybe that's what playing for Maurice Johnston will do to you.

Dickerson Pike, Thursday, 7 February 2008 19:22 (sixteen years ago) link

CONCACAF first round, first leg results:

Dominica 1 - 1 Barbados
Turks and Caicos 2 - 1 Saint Lucia
Bermuda 1 - 1 Cayman Islands
Aruba 0 - 3 Antigua and Barbuda
Belize 1 - 0 St Kitts and Nevis
El Salvador 12 - 0 Anguilla
Nicaragua 0 - 1 Dutch Antilles

1st legs still to be played:

Bahamas vs British Virgin Islands
Puerto Rico vs Dominican Republic
Grenada vs US Virgin Islands (one leg only - USVI does not meet CONCACAF's very low threshold for an acceptable ground - what is it, an all-guano pitch?)
Montserrat vs Surinam

I'm have a vague, forboding feeling about the two-leg USA vs winner of Dominica vs Barbados. If we (being the US) don't win, no group stage.

What makes me worry isn't that Barbados may recruit Harewood, Ifill, and Boyce , but that I just noticed Dominica's goal scorer yesterday, Havant & Waterlooville's Richard Pacquette.

US considering 6 sites for World Cup qualifying semifinals

jergïns, Friday, 8 February 2008 07:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Bridgeview, Ill.; Columbus, Ohio; Commerce City, Colo.; Frisco, Texas; Seattle; and Washington, D.C., U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati said Thursday.

If the U.S. advances, it would have home games Sept. 10 (most likely against Trinidad and Tobago), Oct. 11 (most likely Cuba) and Nov. 19 (most likely Guatemala).

I assume that a grass pitch would be laid down in Seattle over their "fieldturf" plastic field? Or will we have to put up with a repeat of that battle the Russian FA had to fight, just to watch an inferior game? It's a great stadium, though.

RFK Stadium: terrible for World Cup games. I went to both the Honduras (2001) and Jamaica (1997) games there, and the size of that place allowed away fans to grab about half the tickets. No surprise that those two games (a loss, the first US home qualifying loss since 1989, and a draw) were two of the worst home results we have had in the last twenty years. Now that one end of the lower bowl has been ripped out, the atmosphere will be even worse. Until DC United manages to build their own stadium, there's no way they should host anything but friendlies.

I'm much more in favor of playing those games at the smaller MLS parks in the first four places. Cuba in Columbus or Chicago, and Guatemala at "Dick's Sporting Goods Park" in Denver, sounds like six sure points to me.

The USSF loves money, though, and has no problems sacrificing the advantage of home support for more dollars.I expect at least one of those games to be at DC or Seattle, even though the big stadiums should be used only for friendlies.

one month passes...

TAMPA, Fla. -- The day after five members of Cuba's under-23 national soccer team left their hotel with the intention of defecting, two more players disappeared Wednesday night.

Yendry Diaz told ESPN International on the phone that he and Eder Roldan also had left the Cuban team.

Diaz and Roldan are with friends in Tampa, but intend to join their fellow defector teammates in Lake Worth, Fla., according to the Miami Herald.

The original five -- Jose Manuel Miranda, Erlys Garcia Baro, Yenier Bermudez, Yordany Alvarez and Loanni Prieto -- left Tuesday after a 1-1 draw against the United States in an Olympic qualifying tournament in Tampa.

The five already are in Lake Worth, a town north of Boca Raton, according to The Herald, which reached the players by phone Wednesday.

"'We're fine, calm, feeling hopeful about our new lives," Bermudez told The Herald. "Of course, we're nervous because we're young, have no family here, and we don't yet know the way of life here, but we hope the Cuban and American communities will help us get started."

Their first order of business when they got away from the hotel on Tuesday was to buy a cell phone, contact a lawyer -- and celebrate with a Cuban meal, according to The Herald.

"Of course, my heart will be in Cuba with my family, but I want to have the freedom to better my life, to play professional soccer, to be the best I can be, and for that we had to make this sacrifice," Bermudez said in The Herald. "The key now is to get the legal paperwork out of the way as quickly as possible so we can get on with our plans."

Luiz Muzzi, general manager of United Soccer League club Miami FC, told The Herald that he was planning on hosting a tryout for them next week, after he was contacted by a friend of the players'.

"I watched their game against the U.S. on TV, and I thought the Cuban team played very well," Muzzi said. "We were kind of scouting that game because anytime a Cuban team comes to the United States, there's a chance someone might defect."

Bermudez told The Herald that he has contacted Lester More and Osvaldo Alonso for advice; the two had defected in 2007 during the Gold Cup in Houston.

"They told us they're happy for us, and that we have to be patient, but little by little, everything will work out," Bermudez said in The Herald. "Even though we are a little nervous, we know there is a very large community of Cubans here in South Florida, and that makes us feel more at home. We hope to make them proud."

An on-the-field issue is whether the Cuban team will have enough players to compete in Thursday afternoon's game against Honduras at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

If the seven players do not return, Cuba would be left with an 11-man squad, but only 10 would be available to play, because Roberto Linares is automatically suspended one game for receiving a red card in Tuesday's game.

Cuban sports officials were stunned Thursday by the desertions. "We feel really badly," Antonio Garces of the Cuban Soccer Association told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "It's not known if the boys can continue in the tournament."

Raul Gonzalez, coach of the Cuban national team, confirmed to ESPN Deportes that there was no security plan in place around the Cuban team to avoid defections. The team was staying at the Doubletree Hotel Tampa Westshore Airport.

Zachary Mann, a spokesman for Customs and Border Protection, said it's unlikely the agency will learn the men's whereabouts until they come forward. The players likely would be granted political protection under the United States' "wet foot, dry foot" policy that allows Cubans who reach U.S. soil to obtain asylum.

Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said Wednesday the agency had not received any missing persons reports from the team, and officers were not called to the team's hotel to investigate the disappearances

I saw Canada and Jamaica last night in Toronto. It ended in a tie, although Canada really needed the win, and should have beat them. It was perhaps the liveliest crowd I've ever seen at a sporting event in this city. And that includes the SkyDome back when the Jays were winning World Series'. It was bedlam. http://www.concacaf.com/competitions/champsleague/index.aspx

I'm not sure who to support in this. I suppose one of the MLS teams, but New England and DC are definitely out, Houston probably too, so that leaves Chivas USA... On the other hand, MTL is second-division, so that's cool, and the Mexican sides are probably going to be the most fun to watch.

All of this is going to make for some pretty hilarious fixture congestion down the road. The team that can deal with that aspect will have the best shot.

I saw USA v. Trinidad & Tobago last night. Pretty sad that only 11,000 or so came out for the first home game of the qualifiers, but those that were there were decently loud. 3-0 is nice but not much to be proud of against such a small country. There was a decent amount of away support for the Trinis, which was cool to see.

If Brian Ching is still starting at lone striker in 2010 I am going to shoot myself.

Are you asking for bar predictions or game predictions? My bar prediction is that it will be weird but fun, because that has been my usual soccer pub experience.

As for the game... I don't like how overconfident a lot of the pro-USA internet writers and supporters have been. This is the first time there seems to be a consensus that we're favored against Mexico, and that makes me nervous. Still, it's likely going to be a hell of a game. I'm going to say USA 2-1 Mexico, but it'll be down to the wire.

kind of getting stoked for tonight

jergins, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 19:04 (fourteen years ago) link

UARRRGHGH I'm super stoked but the 10.30 start time is going to make it impossible for me to go out to a bar & watch, plus it'd take me an hour to get home after the game. So far, no one I know has admitted to staying home to watch it quietly.

But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel), Wednesday, 3 June 2009 19:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Laurel have you ever used espn360 to watch games? It might be an option.

Suggest this user to be danned. (dan m), Wednesday, 3 June 2009 19:13 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks, Dan, but the laptop belongs to my roommate and the wifi belongs to whichever neighboring network we're piggybacking on at that moment, and usually is only good in 40-second chunks before we have to switch networks.

Sorry to shoot down a good suggestion but I basically have no media/electronics options at home. I was fine with that until televised sports became A THING in my life.

But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel), Wednesday, 3 June 2009 19:15 (fourteen years ago) link

Ah, too bad.

Anyway, I'm interested to see who gets a start tonight. I'd really like to see Maurice Edu and Jose Torres get some time because of their recent club successes, but Edu's hurt and this game might be too important to mess around with inexperienced players too much.

dan are you going to the qualifier in chicago this weekend?

jergins, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 19:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Per Ives, half the starting XI for CR are going to be card-shy, which combined with really shitty old Astroturf makes me think this could be a hilarious(ly tragic) comedy of errors.

But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel), Wednesday, 3 June 2009 19:53 (fourteen years ago) link

A few bad calls on fouls, but the cards were legit. The US couldn't clear it out of their zone, never tried to build through the midfield, and played on their heals for basically 60 minutes. They reaped what they sowed.

howard's point blank stop when dos santos had all the mother fucking time in the world, that was a nice moment. holden with a good cross or two. onyewu big in the middle, heading stuff out. landon and davies had their speedy creating moments. other than that, fuuuuuck. for stretches it reminded me of the spain game, only w/o the shutdown and the counterattacking purpose.

the soccer bar's commentary was in spanish, which wasn't bad considering balboa. the place was packed, 2/3 US fans the rest mexico. everybody got along, unlike all that ugly bullshit on the field, trying to pick davies up and other assorted pettiness.

L'obamalâtrie obligatoire (Michael White), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I've seen a couple episodes, it's decent. They kind of changed the overall emphasis of the show when they brought him on, it got a bit more US-centric.

i am under no illusions that my opinions are even that interesting to me (dan m), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:45 (fourteen years ago) link

He is kind of awesome in that when the inevitable callers get on and trash MLS/US soccer players, he usually stands up to them instead of joining in like Steve Cohen did. Cohen always seemed like he was playing the role of the loudmouth, and Wynalda is and always has been a loudmouth.

i am under no illusions that my opinions are even that interesting to me (dan m), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:51 (fourteen years ago) link

I like him on the show. He's funny, relaxed and a little irreverent.

L'obamalâtrie obligatoire (Michael White), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah he is. I always preferred him over Harkes on the ESPN broadcasts.

About Beasley: there is a rumor that he's coming back to Chicago, since one of the Fire's long time midfielders has apparently switched away from his old number (7) that was DMBs during his time here. Other number 7s people are speculating about: Raul, Figo. If it's any of them, I'm hoping for Beas.

Champions League final first leg tomorrow night, Salt Lake vs. Rayados De Monterrey. Has the potential to be a great series: best team in MLS for the past couple years and the best team in the Primera for the past couple of years (and they have Humberto Suazo!)

yeah i couldn't believe that of these two teams, it's monterey that plays on an american football field.

mizzell, Thursday, 21 April 2011 12:09 (thirteen years ago) link

The field they play on belongs to the Tecnologico de Monterrey, huge university who has the best Mexican American football uni team. I think the rayados are looking to get a different stadium.

Jibe, Thursday, 21 April 2011 12:14 (thirteen years ago) link

That first sentence is very muddled. "which has the best American football university team in Mexico" is what it should say to be clearer.

Jibe, Thursday, 21 April 2011 12:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh I have a really silly question, but everytime I see Real Salt Lake written i can't help but wonder how people in the US pronounce it: Real (as in Real Madrid) or real (as in opposite of fake)? Or some other way maybe? Sorry if this sounds really stupid.
Also thanks for the highlights from last week. Loved seeing that stadium and team again.

Jibe, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 22:41 (twelve years ago) link

Good for them but their name irks me. What is there either Spanish or Royal about SLC?

Concatenated without abruption (Michael White), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 22:47 (twelve years ago) link

Mormons like gold? idk. Everyone I've ever heard says "Real" the Spanish way. I've seen blogs use it in the opposite of fake way, but in an ironic fashion. Everyone makes fun of it for being ridiculous and mis-placed, "Fake Salt Lake" is the standard dig.

I think they're gonna beat Monterrey tomorrow night tbh. They're pretty much impossible to beat at home. Both teams will missing key players, Beckerman for RSL and De Nigris for Monterrey, but Salt Lake is the deepest team in MLS and I don't think they'll have trouble adapting.

Frightening, but full of facts that are difficult to argue with. (dan m), Tuesday, 26 April 2011 23:18 (twelve years ago) link

i don't have a problem with the name, mainly cause RSL works as an acronym, plus there are plenty of teams all over the world named for famous football teams (there's an arsenal in argentina, an everton in chile, etc). what confuses me is why they took the real name and the colors of real's biggest rivals.

“I made some comments after the Gold Cup Final that have caused some controversy. I would like to clarify a few points about my comments," Howard said. " First, I would like to apologize for my language. I am the father of young children, and I certainly do not believe profanity is appropriate in public comments. I was caught up in the heat of the moment."

"I also want to stress that I have no problem whatsoever with the use of the Spanish language at international competitions held in the US," Howard said. "I have nothing but great respect for other cultures, and in this case for the Mexican national team and its supporters. On that night, they played a great game and deserved their win. I play in international matches all the time, and multiple languages are used at almost all of them.

"The point I made, which I stand by, is that it is inappropriate and disrespectful for the post-match ceremonies to take place primarily in the language of only one of the participating teams," Howard said. "In any important international match with post-game ceremonies, you would hope the tournament organizers would make sure that the primary language of each participating team is used so that the participants can understand what is being said. To fail to do this is, in my opinion, disrespectful to the players. When this occurs on your home soil, it is particularly insulting.
"We, as American players, were asked to participate in a post-game ceremony at a match in Los Angeles and we are standing there trying to show good sportsmanship and yet the ceremony is going on and we are just looking at one another struggling to understand a word," Howard said. "It was, to be honest, humiliating, and I firmly believe the tournament organizers should not have put us in that position.”

I tuned in for the second half last night and the FSC announcing team was apparently forced to keep broadcasting even though there wasn't a single fan left in the stadium.

http://www.hexagonalblog.com/2012/02/trinidad-and-tobago-federation-assets-seized.html

The long, long, long dispute between a group of players from Trinidad & Tobago's 2006 World Cup squad and their national football federation reached a new but not yet final phase today when many of the physical assets of the federation were seized by order of the Trinidadian High Court. Court-appointed personnel confiscated assets that were removable and thought to be valuable, such as furniture, match memorabilia and trophies, uniforms, computers, and appliances.

Crates containing unsold copies of Jack Warner's autobiography were left behind.

am kinda curious, as reading stuff this morning about rayados' victory i saw that this competition hsa been won 13/17 times by mexican clubs. i don't really watch the mls but i would have thought the level of its club would be somewhat similar to those of mexican ones. am i completely wrong and mexican clubs are far better? or do the mls teams not really care about this competition?

Jibe, Thursday, 26 April 2012 06:56 (eleven years ago) link

also btw thanks for posting as this reminds me to go check on the rayados

Jibe, Thursday, 26 April 2012 06:57 (eleven years ago) link

Over the past several years the starting 11 for the MLS clubs in the CCL can hang with the Mexican clubs for the most part, but the Mexican clubs are a lot deeper when it comes to quality of players and also have a ton more money to throw around. I mean Monterrey has Suazo and De Nigris who are damn good but also has Luis Perez w/ 80-some caps for Mexico, Walter Ayovi who played for Barca and many times for Ecuador, plus a bunch of other lesser-capped players in support. I think the way the seasons for each league are laid out has a lot to do with it, too. The way it works currently the knock-out rounds start just as MLS is coming into pre-season but the Mexican clubs are in the midst of their tournament.

On the whole though, really, they're just better. :)

Silky Slim (dan m), Thursday, 26 April 2012 15:08 (eleven years ago) link

I'd still like to go! But convincing them to go see their most hated team vs. the team that just knocked them out (and played like little bitches the whole time, too) is gonna be a hard sell, even if we already got the tickets - it's still about a 3 hour drive each way. And I admit that part of me is relieved that I won't have to go to a US/Mexico game.
