Bought tickets for all three group games on sight again and on the assumption we aren't getting out of the group it might actually be enjoyable this time round.

Except I'm on holiday and will miss the first one and it will inevitably turn out to be the Real game.

@Windsor, no player is unbuyable. He'll not sell as many shirts as Neymar, even though he arguably is better. But he's way duller, and I bet he voted for Brexit - or worse, didn't vote at all. 200m transfer to West Ham in 2021 is on the cards.

He'd be perfect for Real Madrid, replacing Benzema, as much as I hate to admit it.

Brexit thing seems a little bit ad hom? he comes off like a thoroughly cosmopolitan young gentleman whenever he's interviewed. also presumably unfazed by the idea of low-wage European labour coming over to undercut him and take his job after the way the Janssen thing went

anyway, i didn't actually say he was unbuyable, i said he was as close as you're gonna get in modern football. given the new paradigm ushered in by the Mbappe/Dembele deals (150m is about what it costs now to buy a player who might turn out to be the best in the world in 5 years, all being well), Harry Kane is easily worth a new transfer record (this'll be Levy's bargaining position at least) and unlike with the whole Neymar/Barca thing, there's nothing in his contract forcing Spurs to sell.

Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 26 September 2017 22:40 (six years ago) link

passé aggresif (darraghmac), Tuesday, 26 September 2017 22:44 (six years ago) link

No ad hom, merely ILF challops tbh. The lad's alright probably. I was being cocky.

On the transfer thing: the tendency seems to be that clubs - eager to sign the next hot star - splash out more for not nearly/unproven players like Mbappé or Dembele. The dream is always bigger than reality. Ie. the promise of "potentially the greatest player ever" seems to be worth more than great players who are still young yet have proven themselves (ie. Kane). Ofcourse Kane is worth more than Mbappé. Way more. But I wouldn't bet on it if it actually plays out that way.

Allis ceiling is below what he was rated at during our late season run last season imho

passé aggresif (darraghmac), Tuesday, 26 September 2017 23:01 (six years ago) link

Alli seems tricky. He's got the skills rough diamond like, but the flipping the finger and other shenanigans (stamping on someone's ankle, for one), idk. More talent than Kane obv, but maybe not boring and level-headed enough to make it in this world.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 26 September 2017 23:03 (six years ago) link

Not sure that it is necessarily obvious that alli is more talented than Kane? joke about kane's low-key demeanour all you like, his performance against Dortmund the other day was astonishing. Not seen the goals from tonight yet

Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 26 September 2017 23:07 (six years ago) link

Alli makes bad decisions and has had a few stinking games lately where his base level of technique was amateur

At his best he looks the type/level of player that Kane doesn't, highlights reel, creative, supernatural creative/imaginative stuff.

Not a complaint to bemoan his wide variance of performance within this range, his level of consistency and end product since his late teens has been staggering.

But I think Kane could stay at spurs his whole career and prove that the past three years are no blip. I'm getting a feeling that Alli could regress either in situ or after a huge transfer, and I don't think poch has him under control despite public approval of his bite or w/e

passé aggresif (darraghmac), Tuesday, 26 September 2017 23:18 (six years ago) link

dele is spiky and flash, all perma-frown & elbows, struggling to be perfect with his one good foot. kane has jettisoned his ego in the name of efficiency. the part of the brain normally used for charm has instead been dedicated to neatly side-footing the ball into the bottom corner. he's the perfect poch striker: inexorable rather than devastating; adapts to the game rather than bends it to his will; too steady & reliable to stop improving. he seems much more likely to stay for the long term than dele, and I'm not sure he's the rare english player that wants to play abroad. they work very well together in the league, and it'll be interested to see if they can do it in europe if spurs start to better control games.

don't see that at all. if someone bid 150m or 200m he'd be gone in a week.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 September 2017 09:01 (six years ago) link

Spurs won't keep him for long unless they change the wage structure. All the sentiment in the world won't matter if he is on £120k and the going rate for strikers of his calibre is three or four times that.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Wednesday, 27 September 2017 09:20 (six years ago) link

xp i'm not sure that's true, what use wld levy have for 150m right now? everything's going to plan, kane doesn't want away, and spurs have had the cautionary experience of the bale money

ogmor, Wednesday, 27 September 2017 09:23 (six years ago) link

they are building a massive new stadium and can't seem to afford to pay anyone v much. i'm sure levy considers the bale sale a success.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 September 2017 09:24 (six years ago) link

150m isn't 150m now

200m might

But

Like LFC and Coutinho, if we can assume that a 120m bid or whatever did come in during the summer there, it's.....idk....cash is shit atm. English teams don't use it well. English clubs very rarely have a setup where a player - whatever his cost, but usually in this geographic context inflated- can be reliably identified, obtained, assimilated. Southampton a notable exception.

So, sell Kane or player X for what seems like a bundle, lovely. Replace him with a worse player for only slightly less because everyone knows you have cash and must be seen to spend it and react to losing a star but you can't either afford not satisfy a player of the same level else player X would still be there.

Then on top of that, the risk of it not working out because of the obscure alchemy involved and ...... Arsenal otm?

passé aggresif (darraghmac), Wednesday, 27 September 2017 09:29 (six years ago) link

I can see him staying at Spurs tbh, he has a Shearer like quality, in so many ways.

The Doug Walters of Crime (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 September 2017 09:30 (six years ago) link

the wage issue won't be solved by a one-off injection of cash. the stadium & everything else is all budgeted for. the bale sale was inevitable and was managed well considering, but it shows what a risk the money can be. missing out on the CL would eat up a good chunk of that money and given how tight the top of the league is it seems like too big a risk to say that they'd definitely to the first big bidder

ogmor, Wednesday, 27 September 2017 09:32 (six years ago) link

I'm on the way back from the game with a definitive and literal answer to my often asked rhetorical question about whether Spurs fans would still whinge when 3-0 up against Real Madrid. Mostly aimed at Sissoko admittedly.

Goes without saying that's the best football watching experience of my life.

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 22:17 (six years ago) link

I was talking about the people in the stadium - I'd be disappointed in anything else from you!

Trippier turned into Roberto Carlos in that first half. Annoyed I missed Dele nutmegging Sergio Ramos though. Really took the shine off the night.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 22:23 (six years ago) link

If dele died now his first and last touches in a spurs shirt would be Madrid megs iirc

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 22:33 (six years ago) link

If poch can drill consistency into Trippier then I genuinely believe Walker won't last as England RB

And that would be fucking sweet.

Still feel like Dier hasn't gotten back to his general level of performance of two years ago but he is an absolute daddy in this group, the like we haven't seen since Sandro in our last CL run

And Rose, Dembele and Wanyama to come back into this first XI, probably.

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 22:36 (six years ago) link

Really enjoyed Spurs tonight.

I'd sort of classified Kane as a productive Big with Good Feet but there's so much more to his game and he is a genuine pleasure to watch.

Alli, on the other hand, I cannot fucking abide. Every game sees him falling/diving and throwing a Cronesque tantrum about not getting whatever fucking decisions he imagines he's owed. He's so strange to watch as he seems to genuinely believe his own lies.

You know how as a fan you shout for all kinds of crap when your own man goes down just because, well, it's your team and you're a wee tiny part of the Twelfth Man? It would stick in my craw if I was a Spurs fan and had to keep yelling for penalties for him.

Anyway, congrats to the ILF Spurs contingent - looking dangerously like a Big Club!

Chunky Backgammon (onimo), Thursday, 2 November 2017 01:03 (six years ago) link

Broadly otm on both imo

Kane for England is the former, maybe.

Dele is 70% annoying.

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Thursday, 2 November 2017 07:43 (six years ago) link

Oh Dele is one World Cup away from being one of the most hated players in the league, definitely.

Kane was some way below his best last night, which I'd attribute to the injury. He ran right through the Real defence on several occasions but fluffed it. One thing you really get from the top tier of Wembley is a sense of formation and shape and individual player movement and Kane's is excellent. It's just nebulous "knowing how to play football" and it means that his general lack of pace and power doesn't matter as much. He's definitely not a Big.

Matt DC, Thursday, 2 November 2017 08:49 (six years ago) link

FWIW I was doing some supremely nerdy Opta stat shit for our Fantasy League the other week and Alli *is* actually the most fouled player in the league at the moment. He also gets an absolute shitload in on other people as well.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 6 December 2017 10:35 (six years ago) link

Fans could choose 40 teams to support, so, if one of their teams only ever gets to play two games, in their brief existence, they have other teams to fall back on. Think of the revenue in replica jerseys.

i was thinking one leg games at a neutral ground

nxd, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 10:44 (six years ago) link

Even better. Obviously there would need to be some safeguards, we can't have a free-for-all, in the event of any EPL team or any of the leading teams in Europe being beaten the result would have to go to either a public vote or, better, a vote by a panel of experts.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 7 December 2017 00:15 (six years ago) link

feel like liverpool's problems earlier this season were due to the attack as well as the defence. firmino, mane, and coutinho were either absent or off-form. now those three and salah are flying, it's a formidable setup. okay the defence is still shit but plenty dropped points in CL and Prem were cos of failing to score, they're on fire in that regard at the moment, at a good time of the season to come into form.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 December 2017 00:45 (six years ago) link

I congratulate you and I enjoyed it thoroughly and I agree they are absolutely on fire. But:

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 7 December 2017 00:48 (six years ago) link

it will do, but the early season was like one goal leads and stuff. 2013/2014 the defence was prob as bad as it is now and the attack papered over it.

Spurs didn't play particularly well fwiw, especially in the second half, Apoel are just rubbish. It felt like exactly what it was, a dead rubber game with a handful of fringe players trying particularly hard to make an impact. Delighted with Llorente's goal though.

Rabiot is correct and, fair or not, the turning point is going to be seen as replacing Cav with Meunier. PSG can’t actively defend a lead and, in retrospect, there was probably more chance of it finishing 1-1 had they spent the last fifteen minutes trying to get a second away goal.

Baaderonixx, what's the reaction there to PSG failing like they did? I mean, what kind of team are they trying to be? Their attack is so frontloaded and yet they seem to retreat to some angsty defending and collapse under pressure. Same as last year against Barca.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 15 February 2018 13:56 (six years ago) link

Par for the course really. Common opinion is that while they have a great team (don’t underestimate the lesser known players), they just aren’t a great club (poorly run, lack of clear authority, rival factions between the Brazilians and the others). Then, for various “political” reasons, they spent all their budget on offensive players last summer on offensive players, while everyone knew that the greatest needs were in the middle and at the back.
Now tbh if the ref has made a couple of different calls last night, the perception today could have been very different so I wouldn’t overestimate all these issues

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 21 February 2018 12:36 (six years ago) link

Yeah I saw something similar - I was musing on whether the scarf was
(a) reflecting and responding to an actual Chelsea-fan useage, or
(b) a scarf-making fool being out-of-touch with fans but close enough that they can sell these things at or near the ground, or
(c) a result of the scarf-makers having been threatened by Chelsea lawyers / RBKC trading standards; "The Chels", not being trademarked or copyrighted or whatever so it's the closest thing to "Chelsea" they can get away with?

Needn't be an either/ or I suppose.

lefal junglist platton (wtev), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 21:16 (six years ago) link

Alli has been dawdling all night and the lack of protection to the overworked centre halves starts with him, with the two spurs full backs playing high (until that bloody second goal) the juve full backs have had easy passing triangles to progress alarmingly easy for the penalty in the first half and the soft goal in the second.

Dier off and although the it means less cover tbh it's next to no cover rly the way he treats defensive positioning.

Son and the delivery from wide may save us yet here but joking poch out aside he hasn't responded well to how juve set up tonight

things you looked shockingly old when you wore (darraghmac), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 21:21 (six years ago) link

Plus the system.tjat wants a fullback to deliver killer balls ten yards from the opposition line but also depends on them being the guy dealing with deep crosses has hurt us again.

Tldr juvevare good and we're also good but juve have seen how to hurt us and imo they'll get another.

things you looked shockingly old when you wore (darraghmac), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 23:46 (six years ago) link

it was a p good game really. can only wish ill on juve and their creaking, violent egotism but allegri moved the game faster than spurs could keep up with. idk what change I'd have made really. wanyama for dier after his knock, perhaps. lucas has looked so encouraging it's tempting to imagine him bursting on and causing problems but really this was still pretty close. can't help but think neither of the fullbacks are up to this level, trippier especially seemed clueless and ineffective in possession.

ogmor, Thursday, 8 March 2018 10:26 (six years ago) link

Massive credit to Klopp - the only manager this season who has gone up against Guardiola twice in succession, fearlessly played his own game, taken him on and beaten him - the second time more resoundingly than the first.

Given the interstellar level that City have been at or that everyone's agreed they've been at - it's an extraordinary achievement.

City, 2017-18 City, of all teams, didn't have a shot on target last night? That can't have happened before.

the pinefox, Thursday, 5 April 2018 09:31 (six years ago) link

I'm getting annoyed by all the online whinging saying City didn't turn up at all. Liverpool got an early goal, nullified their threat and did a solid defensive job imo

well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Thursday, 5 April 2018 11:33 (six years ago) link

ppl cannot grasp that opponents affect how teams can play, its always a case of losig teams just not trying hard enough to be present

ogmor, Thursday, 5 April 2018 11:34 (six years ago) link

Klopp has beaten Guardiola more than any other manager iirc. City have always been vulnerable at the back, it's just that most teams aren't able to get the ball off them for long enough to find out.

Matt DC, Thursday, 5 April 2018 12:15 (six years ago) link

it's just that most teams aren't able to get the ball off them for long enough to find out.

Was watching on a shitty stream but iirc at least 2 of the goals last night came from City losing possession cheaply

groovypanda, Thursday, 5 April 2018 12:38 (six years ago) link

klopp has the best record against guardiola, who has only beaten him 5 times. but yes, the more general point is that pressing makes your opponents look bad. i've seen a few ppl say how spurs' victory over real was diminished bc real were off the pace without considering what that really meant

“It was a tenth of a penalty,” Buffon told Mediaset Premium.

“I know the referee saw, it was certainly a dubious incident. And a dubious incident at the 93rd minute when we had a clear penalty denied in the first leg, you cannot award that at this point."

“The team gave its all, but a human being cannot destroy dreams like that at the end of an extraordinary comeback on a dubious situation."

“Clearly you cannot have a heart in your chest, but a garbage bin. On top of that, if you don’t have the character to walk on a pitch like this in a stadium like this, you can sit in the stands with your wife, your kids, drinking your Sprite and eating crisps."

“You cannot ruin the dreams of a team."

“Real Madrid deserved to go through over the two legs, I wish them the best and it has always been an honour for me to face this club, but objectively we at least deserved to go to extra time tonight."

honest q since i don't follow too closely outside the Prem and CL -- does RM often play against teams set up like liverpool? there really aren't any maniacal counter-pressing teams in la liga, right? feel like bayern might have been tougher simply because heynckes might be more accustomed to klopp's MO

there really aren't any maniacal counter-pressing teams in la liga, right?

There aren't, no. Not against RM/Barca/Atletico at least. And those three get along fine passing until they score. Atletico somewhat the odd one out, they'll play defensively and look for the counter. But they don't need to counter-press maniac style. The gap between those three and the rest is just too big.

Real Betis this season are playing beautiful attacking football and it got them a deserved fifth place, but any more is just not on the cards.

Roma effectively rendered Salah and Firmino useless. Madrid will take note, though I rate Roma's defense (I know I know 5-2 etc) higher than Madrid's defense, which is a shambles this season. I can see Liverpool nicking this somehow, if they've enough gusto.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 20:49 (five years ago) link

Roma left it all out there. Klopp made us believe we needed to win the game for just long enough

We rode our luck (TAA handball in particular) but both the penalties Roma were given were charity penalties – nonsense calls given to a team the ref knew was going to lose. Easy to start dishing out those penalties. Much harder when you're at the Bernabeu and there's a game riding on it.

Salah had a poor game and everyone looked gassed at the end. What a bunch of lads!

Madrid will dive their way to the title and Ronaldo takes his top off.

.b derf (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 May 2018 07:14 (five years ago) link

Trent one should (morally) be pen all day, hand stuck out to block, like Marcelo and Ramos yesterday. I've no interest in a count back. VAR kills football. We're in the final.

My point is the ref doesn't give handball penalties until the heel of the hunt when he knew he was going to blow the final whistle immediately after it, and I don't think (though it's a hypothetical) that the other ref would have given the Milner pen in the first leg had we not been 5-0 up in that game (5-1 at the time).

.b derf (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 May 2018 08:15 (five years ago) link

Spurs have also whipped Liverpool this season so whatever happens we can say we thrashed the Champions League winners this season.

Real's defence is not one one of the world's great units and they're going to struggle against that Liverpool front three but there was some really shambolic stuff from Karius yesterday and Alexander-Arnold in particular looked out of his depth (hardly surprising for a 20-year old playing in a CL semi-final in his first proper season).

Nine goals mininum.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 3 May 2018 08:59 (five years ago) link

I think the ref's job is even more difficult given the absolutely insane speed with which the ball was moved vertically up the pitch in both these games. There have literally not been football games this fast ever.

Liverpool rode their luck, sure. Roma were ahead for 0 minutes in the tie. They touched the ball 0 times when they got back within one goal at the end. It was close. Bayern were a lot closer, for me, Clive.

in twelve parts (lamonti), Thursday, 3 May 2018 09:45 (five years ago) link

ah look theres no doubt who the better team were at all tbf

roma only playing when all was lost is a fair accusation

its great to see a flawed team play unapologetically to its attacking strengths, and refreshing to see the onus put on individual creativity to make a system successful as opposed to the opposite- not something any of the other top 4 aspiring managers can truthfully claim

.b derf (darraghmac), Thursday, 3 May 2018 11:11 (five years ago) link

Liverpool were brilliantly entertaining in both matches but looked like they have some real finishing line issues - either mentally or more likely physically the way they play means they're done after 80 minutes.

I expect a Liverpool lead and a Real comeback. Winner depends on the size of the lead and the timing of the comeback.
