Conference goals yeah I got some of those.

So proud of former Spurs defender Dorian Dervite and has magnificent goal for Eastleigh yesterday.

Tasty game this. Amazing work from Wasilewski earlier, managing to take out two players with one tackle, including one Leicester player.

Matt DC, Sunday, 10 January 2016 16:26 (eight years ago) link

Gray looks good.

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Sunday, 10 January 2016 16:29 (eight years ago) link

He does. Great touch and pass from Onomah to set up the attack that led to the Spurs goal as well.

Matt DC, Sunday, 10 January 2016 16:34 (eight years ago) link

Yep. He looks really bright.

Watching this twenty minutes behind. Carroll and Dier much much wasteful in their passing than our central midfield has been, but really good stuff so far, allowing for soft setpiece concession.

Saoirse birther (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 January 2016 16:45 (eight years ago) link

The romance of these two amateur guys having the chance to commentate a big match like this, presume they're milkmen or something the rest of the time?

Oxford though.

Matt DC, Sunday, 10 January 2016 17:01 (eight years ago) link

Saoirse birther (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 January 2016 17:15 (eight years ago) link

Who exactly are we crossing to, not that I'm not enjoying us creating all these nice crossing opportunities?

Saoirse birther (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 January 2016 17:17 (eight years ago) link

Midweek will be fun.

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Sunday, 10 January 2016 17:46 (eight years ago) link

Towards the end I was starting to think that Alderweireld would make a pretty good deep lying playmaker or marauding winger.

Matt DC, Sunday, 10 January 2016 20:46 (eight years ago) link

intended to go to the Cardiff-Shrewsbury game but my mate decided he couldn't be arsed so we watched it on tv. it was bad to the point of being upsetting

2-2 in the Spurs game was fair just about

a moment on the streets, a lifetime in the sheets (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 10 January 2016 22:00 (eight years ago) link

I am on the train to Liverpool fully expecting a loss, but looking forward to it all the same. Apparently we've sold out an away allocation of 6000 which isn't bad for us on a January Wednesday.

Tim, Wednesday, 20 January 2016 10:20 (eight years ago) link

have a good time tim :) if you can force 5 corners that should be good for 3 goals at least.

pandemic, Wednesday, 20 January 2016 14:14 (eight years ago) link

Haha that goal against you at ours must've been the first time we scored from a corner in like 2 years.

Davies though...

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Wednesday, 20 January 2016 20:28 (eight years ago) link

Carroll at least picks a nice pass.

Davies with a nice cross or two but really hard to see what else is at epl level

Saoirse birther (darraghmac), Wednesday, 20 January 2016 20:31 (eight years ago) link

Jaysus tho our crossing is nice tonight.

The one game we don't play Kane but ah well

Saoirse birther (darraghmac), Wednesday, 20 January 2016 20:31 (eight years ago) link

I can't see Carroll improving the rest of his game enough to be a regular, though I said similar about Kane enough times,

Dier might grow into a DM but his passing and decision making are poor and slowing the team down. Davies makes too many mistakes.

i don't think I've seen the team play particularly well since West Ham in November but it would be churlish to complain too loudly about the general air of efficiency.

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Wednesday, 20 January 2016 20:38 (eight years ago) link

Think Spurs have been largely dece since I've been watching but Leicester not offering much tbh

"Spurs wasted an opportunity to put the tie to bed" aka go 2-0 up after 55 minutes

is it me or this shit getting more prevalent in commentary

Skaciety (pronounced the way you'd pronounce society) (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 20 January 2016 21:03 (eight years ago) link

Getting quite fatigued with playing Leicester by now but Okazaki's furious run is always entertaining to watch.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 20 January 2016 21:05 (eight years ago) link

Bolton Eastleigh looked like a proper humdinger though.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 20 January 2016 21:06 (eight years ago) link

Great pass.

On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Wednesday, 20 January 2016 21:10 (eight years ago) link

Jonathan Pierce is giving the most senile 90mins of commentary I've ever heard.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 20 January 2016 21:11 (eight years ago) link

xp to self then he was like "Leicester need to score here" when they were 2-0 down with 30 seconds of injury time left. wtf

Skaciety (pronounced the way you'd pronounce society) (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 20 January 2016 21:38 (eight years ago) link

benteke is so crap at one on ones in stoppage time

pandemic, Wednesday, 20 January 2016 21:50 (eight years ago) link

Son wasn't great but two moments of quality were prob always going to be enough in this one.

Pos: wimmer looked really solid at cb, vorm both solid and nice and vocal, which lloris lacks. Bentaleb clearly a good option squadwise. Walker had a good night and even below par we looked likely to react best to a bounce

Hey: we always seem below par and rely on a bounce. Seem extraordinarily willing to give the ball away, not even by positive intent just by shit or dangerous passing. Eriksen and lamela really poor. Entire midfield waving their feet at tackles. Nobody can perform the Kane role. Davies is solid in a really bad way.

And ranieri p much just admitted throwing it.

Saoirse birther (darraghmac), Wednesday, 20 January 2016 22:00 (eight years ago) link

Both teams played essentially a second string but Leicester could seriously have won the FA Cup, in fact it was pretty likely.

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 January 2016 09:06 (eight years ago) link

Going to Anfield for a bit of a sing was fun, and being in Liverpool (I haven't been here for something like 20 years) is too. The game was a bit underwhelming: we all knew we had no chance when David Noble wasn't in the squad, on top of the other injuries we have, but at least that meant we could get on with enjoying the occasion without being bothered by troublesome hope. Would have liked the home fans to be a bit more interested but can fully understand why they weren't.

Tim, Thursday, 21 January 2016 09:46 (eight years ago) link

Trying to remember when I last saw TWP score a goal that good.

Although due to in-law loyalties I'm all Derby tonight.

Matt DC, Friday, 29 January 2016 20:13 (eight years ago) link

The next 70mins or so of this are going to be dire though.

Matt DC, Friday, 29 January 2016 20:15 (eight years ago) link

was the goal a curler from just outside the left-hand side of the box into the top right corner? that's like the classic stereotypical good rooney goal that he scores every so often. in fact on one of the few occasions I saw him play in the flesh he scored that exact sort of goal.

Maybe it's because my formative experiences as an Evertonian were FA Cup runs with thrilling home wins in front of capacity crowds, followed by agonising exits ('77 & '80 semis, '81 quarters), I really really hate going out of the Cup. I think my dad was the same (never heard the last of the '53 semi). Maybe also because, by January, it's the only possible thing we can win.

Home defeats seem especially bad. I never saw a Gordon Lee side (Gordon Lee ffs) lose at home in the Cup. (We did, but I wasn't there).

No, not really. Actually being at Wembley to see us lose to a Frank Jr goal in 2009, 29 years after Frank Sr scored that stupid bobbling 119th min header for West Ham at the Elland Rd semi replay brought it all back. Football is awful.

in our admittedly feeble cup run defence btw this from lfw is also spot on. the worst thing about the 21 years is we were barely ever moved to give a fuck

While it’s typical football fan madness to complain about the outcome of a random draw, is there not a fucking bone in that velvet bag they could maybe throw us one year? [..] Three ties with Blackburn, four separate matches with Luton Town, three with Sheffield United, three with MK Dons, two with Nottingham Forest, two with Burnley, two with West Brom – it’s like watching the plates go round and round in a motorway service station café.

Re: QPR - reached the 4th round in 2012 and 2013, surely? Beat MK Dons and WBA after R3 replays, respectively. Doesn't make it much better, mind...

Davies is no loss at LB, Vertonghen is a very useful player and his passing range from the deep flank is going to be interesting. But Dier is not a strong CB.

Not like poch to shoehorn but clearly felt that he had to keep Son in while keeping the trio of Dembele, Wanyama, Dier in the team.

A great game. I wonder how Spuds would be doing if Danny Rose hadn't got injured. A rare defeat for Poch tactically but still a great performance. Gutted to lose when you've shown so much quality.

lilcraigyboi (Craigo Boingo), Saturday, 22 April 2017 18:47 (six years ago) link

Danny Rose is absolutely crucial to the tactical balance of the team. If he'd been fit the initial XI would have been completely different and moreover we wouldn't have been treated to the absurd spectacle of of two right backs on the pitch at once.

It seems fairly obvious that in a game like that you play as close to you first choice defence as possible. I see the tactical rationale behind playing Trippier but otherwise it made no sense.

Matt DC, Saturday, 22 April 2017 21:18 (six years ago) link

Essentially Poch needed Wanyama in the team and couldn't bring himself to drop one of Son or Dier. Both of whom have been excellent of late.

we wouldn't have been treated to the absurd spectacle of two right backs on the pitch at once

try being a Utd fan lol

Number None, Saturday, 22 April 2017 21:32 (six years ago) link

It's a very bad result, and I agree that Walker and Davies (in absence of Rose) should have started, and Son on bench.

The odd thing though is that we didn't really lose because of these bad tactical decisions. When Hazard scored on 75, Walker had replaced Son, Trippier was at left-back (and probably not doing much wrong) and we had been dominating the game for 75 minutes, having scored two sublime goals. At 2-2 we were camped in their half for long spells.

So ultimately the result seems to come down to the late turn of fortunes. Which has something to do with CFC's strength in depth - ie who they could bring off the bench, vs the total lack of game-changers on ours.

the pinefox, Sunday, 23 April 2017 08:33 (six years ago) link

* = we had been dominating the game for 30 minutes, from 45 to 75.

Good to hear about Kongolo; seems he's involved in some messy agent-swap affair, he's due for a tribunal the coming days iirc.

Town def needs a better game plan, to stay up also. We can't have Town going down and Wolves going up; it'd destroy the EFL thread proper.
