500px.com - wants to be a more selective Flickr, without the weird fetish groups and family snapshots and millions of forgettable images. Seems interesting, a better viewing experience than Flickr, will depend heavily on how the community develops.

hmmmm
i actually just set up a separate flickr account precisely because i wanted to separate my "good stuff" (lol) from snaps/"i took some photos at a thing i went to".

That's kind of why I did, too. Flickr would be smart to let one user manage multiple accounts (even if it's a 'Pro' feature only or w/e).

notwithstanding the various criticisms levelled at it wherever we were talking about it recently - photos maybe too small, limitations of viewing images by thumbnails in general, etc - i think flickr is a v graceful & attractive way to present photos. this looks kinda cluttered, text impinges on images, there's a lot of like buttons and things. which is fine if the emphasis is the interaction & all, but idk if it's preferable as an image viewer

This is light on details, but suggests Flickr wants to be the new Flickr, kind ofhttp://www.betabeat.com/2012/02/21/flickr-is-getting-a-major-makeover/

500px's redesign is better, but I still don't like how it crops everything to square when you click on a user's profile page, it should be a jigsaw puzzle type setup like they have on the front page or the various tumblr themes

Only thing that concerns me is where my shots are safe on the net. Have been thinking about own website, but know using a "sharing" site helps with views. I doubt i'd have gotten the getty invitation if i wasn't on flickr.

I'm trying to use a mixture of flickr/tumblr and own site. I have a 500px but looking at it just there it appears I last updated it about 18mths ago.

Advantage of using my own site is that *in time* I'd like to have it displaying things exactly as I want, though I'm getting to that point only in small increments.
make yr own site imo gbx. i really like your photos, they're really interesting. none of this is based on practical considerations, like mobility or attracting views or anything like that. but just like how some guys in the olden days would make a book of their shots, edition of five, handmade, i feel like your photos ending up on a site is v proper & appropriate.
