Charles Fort (Grodd), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

well, Hawaiian guitar, etc was all the rage between the wars -- definitely some interesting stuff from their period.

Charles Fort (Grodd), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

andy iona - on a coconut island

definitely, i read it was the most popular music in america before the war (it was here in england in the 1930s, something not recognised at all, here)

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Without it, slide guitar wouldn't have entrenced itself in american popular music.

Charles Fort (Grodd), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

i uploaded this one before, stormy davis didnt see the point in it though, i think.

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

sol hoopii - hula girl

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

i haven't heard it, but there is a lot of chaffe in regards to Hawaiian 78s due to the widespread popularity during the time. there's a nice Hawaiian influenced song on Old Hat's comp Good For What Ails You: Music of the Medicine Shows, 1926-1937 entitled "Jimbo Jambo Land" done by Shorty Godwin.

Charles Fort (Grodd), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

al shaw & his hawaiian beachcombers - moon over manakoora

i have a better version of this somewhere

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

ha, a familiar story, twas ever thus

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

from what i understand the influence comes from mexican ranchers coming to Hawaii around the 1830s, which might suggest a link between the Hawaiian style and Tejano.

Charles Fort (Grodd), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

definitely would have to a northern mexican style since dats cattle country.

Charles Fort (Grodd), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

felix mendelsohn was interesting, reputedly(?) a great nephew of the composer, he was responsible for bringing a lot of players to england in the 30s, and was very succesful here, but after the music's popularity plumetted postwar, he died in poverty and obscurity.

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

woah, jason, i'd never seen that site before, looks like i didnt need to bother uploading all these, oh well!

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

i was going to do a noir soundtracks one, or a 20s jazz whiteman/specht

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

i'm not sure if the stuff i posted is the same kinda stuff you're posting gareth. from the few tracks you posted before, they were more in the country blues style

Mad SETI (jaxon), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

when was the guitar introduced to hawaii, was it by the portuguese?

i like the native drum and chanting music (i don't know what it's called, they play it at the polynesian cultural center).

Hawaiian music was really popular in parts of West Africa, too, and an influence on guitar-based highlife and such.

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 21 October 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

gareth, you should check out http://www.propermusic.com/

i bought two 4 cd box sets for $20 each. i got a bluegrass one and a gospel one (unfortunately it's almost all acapella jubilee groups - while good, kinda gets old after a while).

anyways, i'm pretty sure they have a western swing box
