Are they as good as "Now The Road of Knives?"

Goodbye Brain, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

Well, they're loud and that is good. But I have not heard Now the Road of Knives yet.

Well, NTROKnives is rather swooshy and warped with plenty of edits done into the studio to long stretches of improv avant rock. The drummer really just keeps going and going, often feeling like jazz, while distorto guitar wash fades around, spooks into the air, bends reality back unto itself (or something) and does a good job in general of just sounding other-dimensional. It also sounds like the whole thing is put through effects occassionally, as the cymbals sound warped and fluttery. Overall, peacefully unnerving, somewhat hellish but not in a bludgeoning powerchord kind of way. More like psychedelic flaming mischief intent on melting your mind.

I'm wondering if you got the "Edifier" one (close-up of guitar with blood on the pick guard). That was put out the same year as NTROKnives and is the drummer's opinion, it's their best album. It looks like this: http://www.simulated.net/ts/media/edifier120.jpg

If that is as layered and psychedelic, I must buy it immediately. Actually, I think I'll probably just get them all, but I wanted to see what you thought first. I had thought you were one of the guys who recommended 'Knives to me in the first place.

if i may be a pedant, edifier came out four years after NTROK, but it was recorded in 1997. it's more straightforward and "rock" in sound and is actually mellow in some places (cover of skip spence's "diana" springs to mind). still sounds like gravitar, but there are bits that might not get you kicked out of polite society.

Yay. I like NTROK.

I might have raved about Gravitar, but not that album in specific.

BUMP

I miss back when I could buy a copy of "Now the Road of Knives" out of the $2 bin like every month and evangelize someone with it. Such a great record. This band never got their props and most likely never will, and that sucks.

You sure slapped some meat in their eyes, Jimmy. (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 27 February 2011 04:24 (fifteen years ago)

I listened to Now the Road of Knives this morning in honor of this fact.

Whichever of them maintains their facebook page posts surprisingly often.

When I sold a bunch of CD's to Academy, the one (out of like 100) that impressed the dude was Now the Road of Knives. Maybe it's hard to find on CD? Made me feel flattered, but at the same time like a chump for selling the CDs so cheap (they just gave me a flat price for all of them, so I don't know what they priced the Gravatar CD at though). Great, great band in any case.

amazon has four used copies of NTROK from like $7-11, so I guess it's not super valuable or anything.
