What

The first Girl Guide Cookies in Canada were baked and sold in Regina.

Who

Christina Riepsamen of Regina started baking cookies in her home to raise money for camping
equipment for her Girl Guide group. Those first cookies were sold in brown paper bags for ten cents a
dozen

When

The year was 1927, and the profits from the sale of the cookies helped pay the way for her Girl
Guides to go camping. The idea caught on quickly and in the next few years the sale of cookies
became the way that Girl Guides across Canada were able to get to camp. In 1929 Girl Guide
Cookies became an official national product.

In the 1930s the cookies were filled with spices, fruit and nuts. A few years later, the now popular
vanilla cookies were introduced, as well as other flavours such as maple cream and shortbread.

After trying and testing many varieties of cookies, the Girl Guides settled on their now-famous
Chocolate and Vanilla Sandwich Cookies – which are still sold today.

Where

Guiding is the largest organization for girls and women in Canada. It provides fun, active and
friendship-filled experiences for girls and young women, giving them opportunities to develop
self-confidence, show kindness and connect with the wider world.

To help support these activities, Girl Guide cookies are sold every spring and fall at cookie stands in
stores and malls, at local sporting events – and yes, they are still sold door to door as well.

Started in Regina as a source of extra cash for uniforms and camping equipment, the sale of Girl
Guide cookies today provides the single largest source of funding for the entire organization.

Thanks, Saskatchewan!

I need some s'mores. I would literally kill to have a box right now.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess, I kiss you!

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Allyzay, Monday, 19 January 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

BRING ME SOME NOW DAMMIT I WANNA EAT A CARTONFUL AND BECOME LIKE MR CREOSOTE

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Samoas are like god said, "Here, you've all been good today, have something on the house" and sent Samoas.

And for some reason God saw fit to charge $4 and only offer them twice a year. It's Old Testamenty if you ask me.

Allyzay, Monday, 19 January 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU DON'T WORK ANYMORE. BUY ME SOME AND BRING THEM TO NEW JERSEY.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

PEANUT BUTTER PATTIES

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

How could I have misspelled samoas when they are more precious and dear to me than anything?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it that time of the year already?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

THIN

FUCKING

MINTS

Frozen, of course.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, which ones are the samoas?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I could eat 4 boxes of samoas right now and probably 2 boxes of peanut butter patties.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god, someone plz stop me before i eat this whole box

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I honestly don't remember samoas that much. Were they the chewy ones?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I have an unexpected opportunity to order girl scout cookies from someone in the next 10 minutes, someone please tell me what samoas are and why I should eat them.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

if you want some help, take the train to NJ and drop some of those cookies off at my job!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll sue someone you hate as payment

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Samoas from their source. (Yes, they're the best w/ frozen Thin Mints in a close second.)

chules (chules), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh right, with coconut -- I never minded coconut but I think I get more of a rush out of crunch than chew on that point. Then again, I wonder what frozen samoas are like?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, *those*. I thought they were Caramel Delights or whatever.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I swear Samaos used to taste better 10-15 years ago.

oops (Oops), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm going to go for my beloved peanut butter patties and those new shortbread/chocolate ones where you eat the endangered animals, in the process learning a valuable lesson about life.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Can someone summarize this for me? Fuckin' PDF doesn't wanna load.

tweemu (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a winsome pictures of two Girl Scouts followed by this info:

Door to door sales ended yesterday.

Purchase cookies at the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York’s cookie cupboard on 23rd Street starting March 22. Please check our website in late February for cupboard days and times of operation.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

what the hell I haven't seen them out yet, where are those little cookie pushing wenches when you need them?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Once I bought a dozen boxes of thin mints and ate them all. Then the next time I bought a dozen boxes and froze most of them. Somehow having a huge supply around made me less likely to eat them all. Well, after the part where having a huge supply around made me incredibly likely to eat them all. Okay, I don't know what lesson I learned from all that after all.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, I just bought them from some girl scout's mom at work. Box of patties, box of thin mints, box of endangered cookies.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

no girlscouts come to my apartment, either. it sucks. i don't get any trick or treaters, either.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

They heard that song by the Frogs "(Children Beware) The Man with the Candy" and got afeared, Eisbär.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

petra jane (petra jane), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

tweemu (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

They don't mention the simultax, but I know it's in there.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

*scratches head, checks*

Hmm. That's some drug.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

simultax -- that's what michael murphey was smoking when he wrote "wildfire"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, I meant "simultacs".

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

but yer highness, these are carpet tax!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I just keep finding results on some drug that helps transplanted organs take to their new bodies -- I like the idea that sweet innocent little Girl Scout cookies are loaded with these!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Fudge-dipped shortbreaders + tub of peanut butter = nickalicious will be up to 200 lbs. again by the end of February.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Though I don't think I've ever had any Samoas, I get the idea from that picture and am now drooling.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Samoas have, like, 700 grams of fat per cookie. Course that's why they taste sooooo good.

Lee G (Lee G), Monday, 19 January 2004 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i went to sleep this afternoon and woke up and somehow MORE had materialized in the cupboards when i woke up...DEAR GOD SAVE ME

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 January 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

it would be excellent if we each bought strongo a box of cookies.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha why do you want me to be fat and (momentarily happy but generally) unhappy : (

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hey lady, wanna check out my shortbread?"

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

you could just stash a few thin mints in, say, a glass of baileys on the rocks. They're waterproof and all (and yum even if they weren't).

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't even like bailey's and suddenly that sounds like the best thing ever.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I was about to say, that does sound a bit tempting.

Jeanne, I would pay money to see you use that as a come-on line to someone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
MY SAMOAS ARE HERE HOORAY

teeny (teeny), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

My Thin Mints should be arriving in a couple of weeks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

SAMOA's mmmm, aren't they called tag-a-longs or something like that now.

Chris V (Chris V), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

they're caramel delights in some areas, tagalongs are the peanut butter chocolate cookie guys I think.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

also I have now had 56% of my saturated fat intake today!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I still have about six boxes from last year. I buy 'em but I never eat 'em. Are they still good? Anybody want them?

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I ordered four boxes, and I am waiting for them. Maybe next Wednesday??

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

my stomach kinda hurts.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Poor Teeny! You must ration your cookie love.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 February 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, else we'll be calling you "Tubby." Hahaha!! (okay, so that wasn't funny at all.)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 23 February 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I have yet to be approached by any girl scouts. :(

i like the peanut butter sandwich and the peanut butter/chocolate ones.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 23 February 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I was able to buy 4 boxes of cookies 2 weeks ago and all but one box are gone now.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The girl scout cookie fairy arrived this morning.

If I explode after a frenzy of Samoan delight before the end of the day, I love you all.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I got two boxes of Thin Mints. I MUST get home with them to put them in the freezer but they sit here taunting me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, just eat them.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The girl scout cookie fairy arrived this morning.

Send her down here, as I'm way overdue for some marshballow madness.

Oh, just eat them.

Diablo, try them frozen and you'll be converted. I'm serious.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, just eat them.

I had a few for dessert with lunch and that will tide me over.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Since mine came in the other day I've already eaten 2 boxes of samoans, 2 boxes of tagalongs, 1 box of the fudge-dipped square ones, and 2 boxes of the newby "pinatas". I have a box of them thurr fudge-dipped square ones open within arms reach as we speak (type).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I've eaten most of a roll of those do-si-do things in the last 15 minutes.

Further bulletins as events warrant.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 4 March 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Give me the number of that troop and by god AND LESBIANS, I'll buy up every goddamn box of Samoas they have, eat them, and then have sex with girls.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 4 March 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Parents were upset to learn that the local Girl Scout organization had given a "woman of distinction award" last year to a Planned Parenthood executive. And they were disturbed to find out that the Girl Scout organization has been giving its endorsement for years to a Planned Parenthood sex-ed program in which girls and boys are given literature on homosexuality, masturbation and condoms.

"It's not that we're a bunch of activists. We're just a bunch of moms who care about their kids," said Lisa Aguilar, who took her 10-year-old daughter out of her eight-member Girl Scout troop. "For us, it's the morality. Where is Girl Scouts going?"

Straight to the the "drop off points" at hospitals and (possibly) the abortion clinics without understanding and proper guidance. Idiots.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 4 March 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

And by 'girls', I meant 'of legal age and who are readily consenting', not girl scouts, oops, you pervert.

I have a specific in mind, and hey, if she wants to dress up as a girl scout, then so much the better.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 4 March 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Purchase cookies at the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York’s cookie cupboard on 23rd Street starting March 22.

awwwww yeah

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish we had these in Britain.

Still, the office kitchen has an entire boxful of Maryland cookies at the moment. They're like crack. I might have some now, in fact.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Objectionable Dude at Work: Hey, I see you've got some cookies there.
Me: Erm.

Dude (points to UNOPENED box of thin mints on my desk): Can I have some thin mints?

Me: No. Those are for my girlfriend.

Dude: What else ya got?

Me (eyeing precious peanut butter patties protectively): Um, I guess you can have one of these chocolate-covered shortbread ones.

Dude: Oh, those are big. I'll just take three here.

TAKES THREE COOKIES

GODDAMNIT

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

That happened to me yesterday with my boxes of Samoas! This new chick at work saw 'em on my desk and asked me if she could have some, since I had two boxes. I was all no way, cookieless bitch, these are my cookies, you ain't got none, better step the fuck off, Binky or someone's gonna get hurt.

And then I ate one in front of her.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Jordan, what a punk ass you work with! They're 3 bucks, he can get his own damn box. Bitch-ass trick.

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I have this great Girl Scouts sweatshirt, complete with lots of merit badges, that I got from Value Village, and I was wearing it at Real Chili last month and the guy behind the counter said, "You've got some great cookies!" and I'd forgotten I was wearing the sweatshirt and gave him a really nasty look. Then he said something about Thin Mints and asked me if I was a troop leader or something, and I realized what I was wearing and I felt bad.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Luna you're protective of your cookies. As all women should be.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

So OTM, Donna.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I made it home with all the rest of my Thin Mints intact, they went into the freezer, and I didn't even touch any the rest of the day!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Traitor.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I would tell someone to fuck off if they tried to scrounge girl scout cookies from me. They can buy their own!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 4 March 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

where the hell are these girls? I can't find them in SF. It is sunny out. They should be pedaling their wares NOW
