ANGEL OF THE MORNING IS NOT CORNY.

TheNewJMod (JMod), Saturday, 12 June 2004 15:38 (nineteen years ago) link

"Let love speak up itself" by The Beautiful South. It's just an awesome, awesome vocal. Love the guy's voice, hate his shit band.

"Goodbye" by the Spice Girls. As I've said many times, the b/vox on the chorus are utterly superb.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 12 June 2004 15:49 (nineteen years ago) link

not inclusive but definitely corny:

"Waiting for a girl like you" Foreigner
"Woman" John Lennon
"That's why they call it the blues" Elton John
"Nights in White Satin" Moody Blues
"Against All Odds" Phil Collins
"Message To My Girl" Spilt Enz

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - "The Power Of Love'

Bimble..., Monday, 3 January 2005 06:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Ooh, I'm glad someone said Against All Odds. I was at a funeral last week where that was played, and I bawled like a big kid all the way through it.

My own nomination? "The Living Years" - Mike & The Mechanics. Corny, designed to tug at your heartstrings, and actually does so, against all my better judgement.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 3 January 2005 12:32 (nineteen years ago) link

mr mister - broken wings. actually most "corny" songs move me cos i am lame and sentimental.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Milkcow Blues Boogie

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 3 January 2005 22:52 (nineteen years ago) link

could it be magic - barry manilow

deanster, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 01:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Against All Odds is a good one. My pick which always brings a tear to the eye is He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother - The Hollies version. Funny thing is I don't even have a brother. I MUST be corny to feel this way.

Piers, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 02:32 (nineteen years ago) link

"Everybody Hurts" REM
"I'm In Love With A Girl" Big Star
"Whenever You're Ready" The Zombies

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 05:05 (nineteen years ago) link

OK, here's my for real answer:
Nature Boy - any version from Nat King Cole on.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 05:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Daphne & Celeste - Hey Boy

(I'm not even sure if it's meant to be sad! The lyrics aren't really, it's just the way its sung, awwwww)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 06:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Another old chestnut:
Les feuilles mortes

and to take it further:
Garota de Ipanema

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 06:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Bonnie Tyler "Total Eclipse of the Heart" OWNS this thread. That and anyone, no matter who you are, can sing it.

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 14:51 (nineteen years ago) link

tina arena - sorrento moon

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 22:18 (nineteen years ago) link

A few as yet unmentioned:
Eagles, Best of My Love
Malvina Reynolds, Where Are You Going
Patsy Cline, Sweet Dreams

also, in addition to the Lauper/Hooters Time After Time, there is a totally different Whiffenpoofs Time After Time that totally chokes me up:
Now that our love can never be
More than a wistful memory
I try not to fall in love with you
Though time after time I do

Vornado (Vornado), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 22:37 (nineteen years ago) link

'lost without you' by Blink-182

cis (cis), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 22:42 (nineteen years ago) link

"The Living Years" - Mike & The Mechanics is a great pick. I despise that band but there's a genuineness of emotion in there which hits me every time. Probably because of the chorale backing.

And "Time After Time" is my Cyndi Lauper pick too. It hits that right note of knowing there has to be a change but wishing it wasn't so ... similar to Ween's "Birthday Boy."

Todd Rundgren's "I Saw The Light" is perhaps my favorite ebullient song about love.

Eric Carmen's "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" is a true heartbreaker.

Plus Dusty Springfield's version of "24 Hours To Tulsa" ... she lingers on the backstory while trying to muster up the courage to say goodbye, and you can hear the struggle in her voice.

Phil Collins-Against All Odds

fucking amazing record.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 22:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I mean seriously, it's not even corny, the lyrics have that directness, I think only a robot could not be moved by "Against All Odds".

I also find "Losing My Mind" by the Pet Shop Boys kind of moves me, just the absolute unabashed theatre of it.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 22:48 (nineteen years ago) link

When I was much younger, 'Cats in the Cradle'.

Sasha (sgh), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 02:18 (nineteen years ago) link

nine years pass...

I just heard the Tony B / Gaga version of "Nature Boy," which my dad used to sing spontaneously (and make himself cry) when i was a kid.

Who is this Nature Boy? A sprite, a deity?

katherine, Sunday, 19 October 2014 17:38 (nine years ago) link

out of cyndi's songs i think "true colors" would be my choice for corny-yet-moving quality

"The Angels Rejoiced in Heaven Last Night" by the Louvin Brothers.

pisceboy said so on the thread too

And as for fortune and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world
They were all I deserved
They are illusions
They're not the solutions
They promise to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Sunday, 19 October 2014 22:40 (nine years ago) link

although it's Sinead O'Connor's version that i love, really.

'Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town' - Kenny Rogers and the First Edition

Bloody Snail, Monday, 20 October 2014 08:31 (nine years ago) link

Corny as in sentimental, or corny as in full of melodic and lyrical cliches? I am a sucker for the former and cry pretty much on cue. Same with movies.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Monday, 20 October 2014 13:45 (nine years ago) link

i could easily see why someone might think dylan's "brownsville girl" is corny as fuck but i'm moved to tears most times i hear that song, it's so captivating, everything about it. the lyrics, the stories he tells in it, the background singers, the huge drums, the sax solo, i just think it's a complete masterpiece. i know i'm not alone in that though, it has tons of devotees.

marcos, Monday, 20 October 2014 14:31 (nine years ago) link

"Game of Love" - Santana and Michelle Branch. Love her voice on this.

calstars, Monday, 20 October 2014 15:15 (nine years ago) link

The answer is "landslide". I am a lost little bawling baby when I hear that song.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 20 October 2014 15:19 (nine years ago) link

Good one, calstars. There's a bunch of late '90s/early '00s minor key pop songs that I only ever heard in passing and over PA systems, like, at work and in student unions that always made me feel a little melancholy (e.g. "Barely Breathing"). They lost a little of their magic once I heard them over something other than tinny speakers playing in the distance.

Also, "Adia" kinda fucks me up. And "Anything For You" by Miami Sound Machine.

What Lies Behind The Beehive? (Old Lunch), Monday, 20 October 2014 15:28 (nine years ago) link

i don't think there is anything corny about landslide!!
