Hatred of Travis/Ocean Colour Scene/Stereophonics must bewilder non brits.

Come to think of it, it does. Travis and the Stereophonics both have at least one song I really like, and they're really not that different from the DMB...

Hatred of Travis/Ocean Colour Scene/Stereophonics must bewilder non brits.

I understand the hatred perfectly, its the same reason we hate DMB.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 16:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

In fact, I hate them a lot more. Definitely smugger than DMB.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't think I've heard an entire DMB song but this thread makes me want to love them.

I know CanCon requirements explain a lot, but how can you not have heard them from car radios or commercials or other involuntary exposure?

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Living in a French province probably made it easier.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

can anyone recommend anything by the DMB ?

kevin brady (groeuvre), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

I only heard him on the radio for a LOOOONG time before I knew who it was. I had heard the tern "Dave Matthews Band" but had no clue and wasn't that interested for some reason. When I found out that all the hubbub was about this guy who made these songs I heard on the radio, I was shocked.

I feel my opinion of his music is fairly sincere because I was literally unaware of who he was or what he looked like. I had heard his name in relation to Phish, so I assumed his music probably wasn't even on the radio.

His music always felt icky, like bad generic white guy music from the late 80s somehow mixed with Seal to make for an uncomfortable, displaced feeling of nostalgia and slow-motion blah.

Scaredy Cat, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Recommended DMB songs:

The verses of "The Space Between Us" (the chorus sucks ass)
The "I am no Superman" song
The "drink too much" song

Everything else is completely worthless and unnecessary.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

So this is what the world has come to? A hatred for probably the most talented band out there? Why? How could anyone deny the pure talent and ability of the DMB? Carter Beauford is the best commercialized drummer out there, Dave Matthews is genious in his ability to conjure unconventional rythms on guitar while singing legato over them, there's really nothing like it. Leroi, boyd, and Stefan are all incredible musicians that are perfect in creating an awesome eclectic sound with Dave and Carter.

Musicians know what I'm talking about. Sure, there are a million idiot teenage girls and shallow jocks who like Dave cause he sings love-type songs and the Space Between, but you've got to look past the stereotypes to see the real substance in their music.

I can't stand it when people say they don't like them because "crash into me talks about looking up girls skirts" when in reality it was put there because Dave improved it once and everyone laughed and it just kind of stuck, what's the big deal? It's nothing compared to any rap, rock, or hip hop group out there.

Dave matthews has an awesome voice, it's different, it's for people who like different things every now and then, don't you people ever get tired of all the singers that sound like either Britney Spears or Scott Stapp? Nobody sounds like Dave, that's why so many people love him.

Dave Matthews Band started out about 13 years, jamming in a bar. They grew so fast because of their awesome live shows and word-of-mouth. Dave is now obviously a millionaire, but he always states how much they owes every bit of their success to their fans. They release an album, whether it be live or a studio recording, every year, for their fans, they tour everywhere all the time for their fans, Dave dances, and the band's still together for their fans.

The DMB is the best band on earth right now, they're very, very talented, and they love their work and their fans. How could you deny the greatness of such a group of people?

naga_pampa, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

His music puts me to sleep, that's why.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Musicians know what I'm talking about.

I'm a professional singer and I think that DMB doesn't just the big hairy nutsack, they chew and gnaw at it until it tears, causing the testes to spill out in a heaping pile of epididymis and seminal vesicles.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't believe you mentioned joining Carcass as a lyricist, Dan.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

the proper response to naga_pampa is probably akin is to jess's quip in his piece on Our Band Could Be Your Life that when someone says something HAS to be IMPORTANT, it usually isn't.

I'm talking about instrumental musicians, you sick freak

naga_pampa, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Carter Beauford is the best commercialized drummer out there"
Bring it OOOONNNNNN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kevin brady (groeuvre), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

"the most talented band out there", "the pure talent and ability of the DMB", "the best commercialized drummer out there", "Dave Matthews is genious [sic]", "all incredible musicians that are perfect in creating an awesome eclectic sound" , "Dave matthews has an awesome voice" , "their awesome live shows" , "The DMB is the best band on earth right now, they're very, very talented"

jesus christ, what are you, their publicist? You sound positively zealous in your DMB fundamentalism. Here's a suggestion -- sweeping superlatives and purple prose will *NEVER* convince anyone of anything nor *EVER* win you an argument.

"Nobody sounds like Dave"

Hmm...well, John Mayer certainly does....and he's boring as fuck too!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am not denying that DMB doesn't have skill at writing songs, but those songs would be about 8,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times better if a different band was performing them, or at least if they had a decent singer.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Encouraging Jon Mayer is UNFORGIVABLE.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

hahahahhahahahaa, you guys are hilarious, John MAyer doesn't sound like him at all.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wish their were some real musicians in here so they'd know what I was talking about, by the way, the weather's fine how 'bout you, Alex?

naga_pampa, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

In what universe are singers not real musicians?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Are you an instrumentalist, naga? What do you play? What type of singers do you work with?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

...and how old are you?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm an 18 year old that plays guitar, bass, piano, baritone, trumpet, tenor and alto sax. I work mainly with jazz singers, and you?

naga_pampa, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

"don't you people ever get tired of all the singers that sound like either Britney Spears or Scott Stapp?"

This is funny for more reasons than I can count.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm a 30-year-old classical singer who is a member of a professional church choir, sings with the BSO choir and solos as part of a sacred music ensemble. I have played piano and tenor sax in the past but haven't kept up with either of them. I also write dance music and write and arrange a capella choral music.

Do the jazz singers you work with know that you don't consider them to be musicians?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

I meant instrumental, and they all play instruments anyway, so they know I consider them to be musicians

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

how many times do we have to go over this technical proficiency /= "good" music thing?

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

WHIP OUT YR DICKS, DUDEZ!

Nick A. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

I will bet you MONEY that if I polled the orchestra players I know, the vast majority of them would HATE DMB for being puerile.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

(God I am too old to be playing this game. Apologies to everyone.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

what type of fucking jazz "musician" calls the dave matthews band the most talented band out there? are you gonna tell me they're more talented than phish never mind nearly every other band out there? are they more talented than the vandermark five jazzbo?

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alright, I didn't mean to put the "most" talented, but they're high on my list

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

B-b-but their violin player studied at Juilliard!

(NOTE: I have often felt bad for the violin player, partly because I felt like he was wasting his talent by playing with DMB but mostly because he looks like the Predator.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

"I'm an 18 year old that.."

Ah, that explains it then.

Listen, your tiresome insistence that "real musicians know what" you're talking about it is a moot point. Musicians don't make music solely for other musicians. Boring music is boring music, whether your Philip Glass or Kato Kaelin. Technical proficiency on your instrument of choice is no guarantee of substantive *STYLE* (waaaay more important than skill). Sure, maybe you can play scales on your oboe using only your pinky,.....but that doesn't mean anyone really wants to listen to it. Technical proficiency merely makes you a musical 'craftsman,' STYLE makes you an artist....and even then, not necessarily a great one. DMB has style -- I'll admit it -- but they're still dead boring.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are more talented, as well as numerous jazz combos, I guess I meant most talented band you'd see on TV. I also think PHISH might be better, but they're just a different band, it's hard for me to say, oh and thank you Alex, for saying they are "craftsmen" that's pretty much what I was trying to say.

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

you're not saying bela fleck's jazz are you?

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

also, you realize glen ballard cowrote (uncredited) most of the songs and played most of the instruments on everday right? just like with jagged little pill?

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm a musician, and there are plenty of people out there like me who love th DMB. I like listenin to a lot of music that other eople don't like because I look for talent and style ("craftmanship") more than anything. To some it's boring, to me it's awesome.

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

"oh and thank you Alex, for saying they are 'craftsmen' that's pretty much what I was trying to say."

Well, no charge, but it seems to me that using terms like "most talented," "best commercialized", "genious [sic]", "incredible", "perfect", "awesome", "eclectic" and, of course "best band on earth right now" sort've overstates it. Calling the Dave Matthews Band "crafstmen" is by no means a compliment.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sting's a craftsman!

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Style doesn't equal craftsmanshp at all. Look at, say, Andy Gill of Gang of Four. The man probably couldn't play a proper scale if you put a gun to his head, but he has more **STYLE** than a quadrillion seasoned sessioneers altogether.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bela flek and THE FLECKTONES is a whole lot of jazz mixed with bluegrass and a lot of different things. Bela Fleck himself is mostly bluegrass and country-type music. And yes Glen Ballard did a lot of the Everyday stuff, but the music was performed by the the DMB, (he just wrote a lot of the songs) Most dmb fans, and I, dislike that album.

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't see what's so amazing about his music that is very different from anything else. I'd rate Old 97s and Wilco about 3x as good as far as musicianship goes (closest bands I could think of in that same sort of genre).
I hate Dave Matthew's voice and his lyrics suck, too.

I am no Superman for you, but I do know one thing, where you are is where I wanna be.

How many times does he repeat that in the fuckin' song? It's practically the whole song. I guess he thought that was really brilliant, huh?

Scaredy Cat, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

I admit, I did sopme over stating, but I haven't seen a more talented band on T.V. than the DMB in a long time. They're all qualified musicians on a number of levels, you can't take that away from them.
You guys got to listen to more of their stuff before ripping on one bad song they wrote.

Re: www.ilxor.com hate DMB
I just happen to find the DMB's music *DREADFULLY, PAINFULLY, UNBEARABLY DULLLLLL*. Couple that with a nation of tobacco-chewin', hackey-sack punting frat boys zealously espousing the band's dubious skills and you have a whole new reason to hate the DMB. Does this mean that I think that *EVERY*one who likes the DMB is a ...slack-jawed, monobrowed troglodyte? Not necessarily, but to those who are on the fence about them, I'd say this --- RAISE YOUR STANDARDS! There's more ****ing interesting music out there....seek it out before you settle for less.

The least this guy could do is get the Simpsons quote RIGHT if he's going to steal it...gotta love a guy who can't even plagiarize properly...

Interesting note about this "live band":

DMB + "U" = DUMB.

By themselves, in a vacuum, they are incomplete. But with an audience to listen, they've unleashed a whole lot of dumb.

Why are you looking to the T.V. to find decent music?
